Transcript
- 0:00Have you ever met someone who seems to want love, but runs the
- 0:05moment it gets real? Or maybe you've been that
- 0:08person, drawn to someone deeply, only to pull away when things
- 0:12get serious? This isn't just cold feet.
- 0:15This is the avoidant attachment style in action.
- 0:18And today we're going deep into why avoidance rarely end up with
- 0:23the person they truly desire and how they unknowingly sabotage
- 0:29the love they crave. Hi, this is Lucia, but the art

- 1:12OK, so avoidance. Don't marry or commit long term
- 1:16to the person they're most attracted to.
- 1:20Instead, they choose people who feel safe, people they like but
- 1:26aren't in love with. And why is that?
- 1:29Because intense emotions trigger their core fear, loss of
- 1:34independence and engulfment. Love feels unsafe.
- 1:38Vulnerability feels like a threat.
- 1:40So they end up in relationships that are comfortable but
- 1:43unfulfilling and often unfair to their partners.
- 1:47So they unconsciously pick someone who gives a lot
- 1:51emotionally but doesn't demand much in return, won't push for
- 1:55deep vulnerability or future plans, allows them to maintain
- 1:59emotional distance without conflict.
- 2:01This feels secure to them, but it's a fragile kind of security,
- 2:06one that avoids true intimacy avoidance.
- 2:09Confuse safety or security with emotional availability.
- 2:14They're drawn to givers, people who are emotionally generous,
- 2:19patient, and undemanding. Why?
- 2:24Because avoidance want to receive love without the
- 2:27pressure to give it. Equally, they feel secure with
- 2:31someone who asks little of them. No deep emotional conversations,
- 2:36no expectations for future planning, no demands for more
- 2:39time or intimacy. But here's the catch.
- 2:43This security is an illusion. The avoidant isn't choosing a
- 2:47partner they adore. They're choosing someone who
- 2:50won't trigger their fear of engulfment.
- 2:53The relationship stays surface level.
- 2:56Minimum physical intimacy. Minimum emotional sharing.
- 3:00It's a partnership. Partnership built on
- 3:03convenience, not passion. The relationship might seem fine
- 3:09until you ask for more. More time, more commitment.
- 3:14More emotional openness. And that's when the avoidance
- 3:18defenses kick in. Their brain screams danger.
- 3:22This is getting too close and their instinct is to retreat.
- 3:27But instead of communicating, they often engage in micro
- 3:32cheating or emotional exit strategies.
- 3:37And this can be something like flirting with someone else,
- 3:40keeping a backup person on standby, pulling away
- 3:45emotionally while staying physically present, withdrawing,
- 3:48being distant, vague, noncommittal, start to talk to
- 3:52someone else, or revisiting an ex.
- 3:56They convince themselves that they're really not that into
- 3:58you, even if days before they were.
- 4:02And this isn't always conscious. It's a self protection
- 4:07mechanism, their way of regaining control when love
- 4:10feels too risky. It's about self preservation.
- 4:14The backup person makes the avoidant feel safe, like they
- 4:17have an escape route if the relationship gets too close.
- 4:22But this behavior drains their primary partner, leaving them
- 4:26feeling neglected and insecure. To an avoidant, secure love
- 4:31doesn't mean deep connection, it means control.
- 4:35Their ideal dynamic looks like this.
- 4:39A partner who doesn't trigger their fear of engulfment.
- 4:42Someone they like but aren't obsessed with.
- 4:45Someone who tolerates their emotional unavailability or even
- 4:48their micro cheating. A dynamic where they receive
- 4:52love but don't have to fully give it.
- 4:56But here's the problem. This is A1 sided relationship.
- 5:00This isn't security, it's stagnation.
- 5:03The avoidant feel safe because they're in control, but over
- 5:07time their partner grows resentful.
- 5:10The lack of true intimacy, emotional, physical and
- 5:12spiritual, drains the relationship until it collapses.
- 5:18The relationship fails because it's unbalanced.
- 5:21The avoidant takes, the giver burns out.
- 5:24The avoidance stays comfortable but lonely, wondering why they
- 5:27never feel truly loved. And the cruel irony is that the
- 5:32best partner for an avoidant is often the one who scares them
- 5:37the most. Someone who triggers their
- 5:40deepest fears of vulnerability, makes them want to open up even
- 5:46if it's uncomfortable, challenges their avoidant
- 5:49patterns. Someone who they feel intensely
- 5:53about, which terrifies them. Someone they want to open up to
- 5:58but don't know how. And someone who they're tempted
- 6:01to love and not to give love to, but not just receive.
- 6:06But instead of choosing this person, they often run towards
- 6:10someone easier. Not because they don't want deep
- 6:14love, but because the nervous system associates passion with
- 6:17danger. Vulnerability feels like losing
- 6:21control. So they self sabotage,
- 6:24retreating to the safe partner who demands nothing but also
- 6:29guarantees no real fulfillment. Now the good news is that
- 6:33avoidance can have healthy, fulfilling relationships.
- 6:37So if you're listening to this and you're an avoidant,
- 6:40recognize that safety isn't to the absence of love, it's the
- 6:44presence of trust. Therapy can help you tolerate
- 6:50intimacy. Lean into discomfort.
- 6:53The person who scares you the most might be the one you need.
- 6:57And if you're dating an avoidant, you can't love them in
- 7:01interchanging. They have to do the work
- 7:04themselves. Setting boundaries is key
- 7:06because you deserve a love that's mutual and not one sided.
- 7:10Love shouldn't feel like you're always waiting for them to show
- 7:13up, so don't confuse potential for reality.
- 7:18They have to choose growth. Set boundaries.
- 7:22You deserve reciprocity and ask yourself, am I giving up my
- 7:26needs to make them comfortable? If you're an avoidant to
- 7:29understand that your desire for love is real, your fear is
- 7:34understandable, but the love you truly want is on the other side
- 7:37of that fear. And if you love an avoidant,
- 7:41remember, you can't fill a cup that refuses to open.
- 7:45Sometimes the most loving thing you can do is walk away.
- 7:49Not to punish them, but to honor yourself.
- 7:52So if this resonated with you, let me know in the comments.
