Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: How I Finally Started Strength Training — Regularly
Transcript
- 0:19Speaker 1: Hey, everybody, Emily Abadi here coming to you from the
- 0:23Speaker 1: AG studio. You are listening to another installment of five
- 0:27Speaker 1: minutes Friday from Hurdle. I feel like it's been a
- 0:30Speaker 1: moment since I've sat down and candidly talked to you all.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Do you miss me? I hope your year is off
- 0:38Speaker 1: to a good start. I said this to a friend yesterday.
- 0:41Speaker 1: I feel like I have been holed up like in
- 0:43Speaker 1: my apartment, partly a little just anxious about all of
- 0:47Speaker 1: the things gestures loosely with COVID, and then partly because
- 0:51Speaker 1: I'm just working really hard to set a stellar foundation
- 0:55Speaker 1: for what it is I hope to build this year.
- 0:59Speaker 1: On that note of setting a stellar foundation, today I
- 1:02Speaker 1: want to talk to you about something that I haven't
- 1:05Speaker 1: been committed to. I would say arguably. I mean, with
- 1:09Speaker 1: the caveat of physical therapy, I haven't been committed to
- 1:14Speaker 1: this to this level since maybe like twenty sixteen. And that,
- 1:24Speaker 1: my dear hurdlers, is strength training. You know, it's so funny,
- 1:28Speaker 1: right identify as a runner and you'll hear runners say
- 1:31Speaker 1: all the time, like I am going to strength train
- 1:34Speaker 1: if I strength train and do single leg stuff and
- 1:37Speaker 1: think about balance, then I will be a better runner.
- 1:39Speaker 1: And because I have all of these lofty running goals
- 1:42Speaker 1: and I'm going to make it a priority. But like,
- 1:44Speaker 1: how many times have you or at least I mean,
- 1:46Speaker 1: I won't okay, I won't project on you, But how
- 1:48Speaker 1: many times have I told myself I am going to
- 1:51Speaker 1: do that, I'm going to make this priority, and yet
- 1:54Speaker 1: I do the bare minimum just so I can get by.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Well.
- 1:59Speaker 1: I finally, just after navigating injury this marathon season, that
- 2:02Speaker 1: I was going to commit to string training and to
- 2:05Speaker 1: act on that goal and make it something that really happened.
- 2:09Speaker 1: I took it to the next level and decided to
- 2:13Speaker 1: start working with a trainer, not one on one in
- 2:15Speaker 1: a physical setting here in New York, like inside of
- 2:18Speaker 1: an equinox, but rather via the Future app. I wrote
- 2:21Speaker 1: an article all about my experience. To read about it,
- 2:23Speaker 1: you can click on over to the show notes and
- 2:26Speaker 1: check out the link on GQ. But all this to say,
- 2:29Speaker 1: I decided to commit to working with a personal trainer
- 2:32Speaker 1: on an app that gives them to you on demand
- 2:35Speaker 1: for one hundred and fifty dollars a month, and by
- 2:37Speaker 1: doing that I put more skin in the game. Is
- 2:41Speaker 1: that the right saying here, I decided, okay, you want
- 2:44Speaker 1: to take this seriously. When you've tried to quote unquote
- 2:47Speaker 1: take this seriously in the past, it hasn't worked. So
- 2:49Speaker 1: what can you do differently right now? And that act
- 2:54Speaker 1: right me telling myself that first and foremost, that's the
- 2:59Speaker 1: first step. Whether we're talking about strength training or we're
- 3:03Speaker 1: talking about drinking more water. When you want to make
- 3:07Speaker 1: a change, the first thing you need to do to
- 3:09Speaker 1: make that change is admit what your current circumstance is.
- 3:13Speaker 1: And that can be really challenging, right It can be
- 3:15Speaker 1: really challenging and tough to admit to yourself when you
- 3:18Speaker 1: maybe haven't done something as well as you had hoped
- 3:22Speaker 1: in the past. It's all about removing that judgment. If
- 3:26Speaker 1: you sit there and you get frustrated with yourself, that's
- 3:29Speaker 1: really not going to do you any good period end sentence,
- 3:34Speaker 1: exclamation point. So I want you to ask yourself, is
- 3:38Speaker 1: there something that you want to do right now that
- 3:41Speaker 1: you need to have a little bit more grace with
- 3:45Speaker 1: yourself over something that you need to give yourself a
- 3:50Speaker 1: little extra love to go in the direction that you
- 3:53Speaker 1: know that you want to go in. I'm about a
- 3:56Speaker 1: month maybe six weeks into the strength training journey, and
- 3:59Speaker 1: if I had stopped myself before I started, right, if
- 4:03Speaker 1: I had gotten frustrated with myself about my lack of
- 4:06Speaker 1: dedication in the past and just believed that I was
- 4:10Speaker 1: never gonna be quote unquote good at this, then hey,
- 4:14Speaker 1: that wasn't going to do me any good. Six weeks in,
- 4:18Speaker 1: I'm really enjoying this, and I'm really proud of myself
- 4:21Speaker 1: for dedicating this time to a new skill, to a
- 4:25Speaker 1: new thing and seeing, you know what happens from here.
- 4:29Speaker 1: My prompt for you this week where in your life
- 4:33Speaker 1: do you need to get out of your own way?
- 4:35Speaker 2: What do you want? Where in your life do you
- 4:39Speaker 2: need to get out of your own way? And what
- 4:43Speaker 2: do you want? And now a listener question.
- 4:48Speaker 3: Hi, Emily, my name is Joey, and I've been listening
- 4:51Speaker 3: to Hurdle pretty much religiously since your Kirsty Godso episode
- 4:56Speaker 3: like over a year ago. And my question is, after
- 5:00Speaker 3: you have gone through a hurdle and you learn you
- 5:04Speaker 3: know some kind of lesson or something to keep you going,
- 5:07Speaker 3: what is your best advice on keeping that lesson and
- 5:10Speaker 3: keeping that hurdle in the forefront of your mind? So
- 5:13Speaker 3: that it's not just a one and done lesson, but
- 5:16Speaker 3: something that is really advising how you continue going through life,
- 5:19Speaker 3: so you don't really find yourself going through the same
- 5:22Speaker 3: problem or the same hurdle. Again, would love to hear
- 5:26Speaker 3: your insight. Thank you.
- 5:28Speaker 1: I love the name Joey for a girl. Just on
- 5:31Speaker 1: the record, Hi Joey, thanks for your question. So I'll
- 5:35Speaker 1: say this, just because you've been through one tough moment
- 5:38Speaker 1: doesn't necessarily mean that it makes the rest of the
- 5:41Speaker 1: difficult moments as you go on through your life less difficult.
- 5:45Speaker 1: What it does mean is that by getting through one
- 5:50Speaker 1: hurdle and living to tell the tale, as we all do,
- 5:54Speaker 1: we then have the opportunities, as you kind of reiterated
- 5:57Speaker 1: in your question, to implement what we learned from that
- 6:01Speaker 1: tough time going forward. Now when it comes to remembering
- 6:05Speaker 1: the lessons, I cannot reiterate this enough. It is so
- 6:10Speaker 1: so important to reflect on what's going on, even when
- 6:14Speaker 1: it's hard to reflect on, even when it hurts and
- 6:18Speaker 1: it's scary and it makes your stomach turn. Right when
- 6:21Speaker 1: you are going through a tough moment, a tool like
- 6:24Speaker 1: journaling can be absolutely critical to help you process everything
- 6:31Speaker 1: that's happening all around you. And maybe if you're not
- 6:35Speaker 1: the kind of person that loves to write things down
- 6:36Speaker 1: in a notebook, do something a little bit different. Then
- 6:39Speaker 1: maybe it's voice notes for yourself, Maybe it's you talking
- 6:43Speaker 1: to your phone just for you. Maybe it's writing in
- 6:46Speaker 1: a private online blog, whatever way you can get out
- 6:49Speaker 1: some of your feelings. It's going to be so helpful
- 6:52Speaker 1: for you to be able to look back on these
- 6:54Speaker 1: moments when maybe your perspective was shifted, all felt completely lost,
- 6:59Speaker 1: and know, being a little bit removed, that you have
- 7:03Speaker 1: the tools now to get through your deepest, darkest times.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Ask yourself during these moments and as you go forward,
- 7:12Speaker 1: what was it during that time that I was proud
- 7:14Speaker 1: of myself for doing?
- 7:16Speaker 2: What is one thing or two things, or maybe who
- 7:18Speaker 2: knows a handful of things that you would have done differently,
- 7:22Speaker 2: And don't approach that question with a lot of judgment,
- 7:24Speaker 2: And then how can you harness these skills going forward
- 7:30Speaker 2: to better show up to challenges as they continue to arise,
- 7:33Speaker 2: And trust me, they will hurdle moments. They happen for
- 7:38Speaker 2: all of us, but is up to us to show
- 7:41Speaker 2: up as they come, knowing that you can make it
- 7:45Speaker 2: to the other side. Also, one last thing to throw
- 7:48Speaker 2: into the mix here, remember that even when you feel alone,
- 7:52Speaker 2: you aren't alone. There's always going to be someone that
- 7:55Speaker 2: you can talk to about what is going on in
- 7:56Speaker 2: your life, whether it's a dear friend, a family member,
- 7:59Speaker 2: a therapy. Pissed, so chin up and keep pushing.
- 8:03Speaker 1: You've got this. That's it for this week. Make sure
- 8:06Speaker 1: you're following Hurdle Over at Hurdle podcast. I'm over at
- 8:08Speaker 1: Emily and Vadi another hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next time.
