- 0:00Speaker 1: She's on the Money. She's on the Money.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money, the podcast
- 0:26Speaker 2: for millennials who want financial freedom. Christmas is just a
- 0:30Speaker 2: few days away, and while we're sure you're sordied when
- 0:33Speaker 2: it comes to the big day itself, today we're going
- 0:35Speaker 2: to reveal our top tips for tackling the Boxing day
- 0:38Speaker 2: sales so you can shop strategically without sabotaging your savings
- 0:42Speaker 2: or mindlessly consuming just for the sake of it. Yes,
- 0:45Speaker 2: I did need to read that intro twice because there
- 0:47Speaker 2: were so many tongue twisters in there, but that's okay.
- 0:49Speaker 3: Because the power of good editing means you've only heard
- 0:52Speaker 3: it once precisely.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Now, my name is Georgia King, and joining me as
- 0:57Speaker 2: she does every single Wednesday, is, of course, financial adviser
- 1:00Speaker 2: Victoria Divine fee Let's chat Boxing Day Sales. It is,
- 1:04Speaker 2: of course the theme of today's episode. How many Boxing
- 1:07Speaker 2: Day sales have you been to in your time? Oh?
- 1:09Speaker 3: My gosh, so many? Honestly, George, I feel like fifteen twenty.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Oh I'm so old. But I remember when I was young.
- 1:19Speaker 3: They used to be like golden, like I could not wait,
- 1:23Speaker 3: like I lived on the Peninsula when I was maybe
- 1:25Speaker 3: twelve thirteen, and I remember Mum going, look, if you're good,
- 1:29Speaker 3: we'll drive up on Boxing Day to Southland. And do
- 1:33Speaker 3: you remember Southwest That used to be like the place
- 1:36Speaker 3: to be anyway, would drive up to Southland and go
- 1:39Speaker 3: to the sales and everything was so cheap, like it
- 1:42Speaker 3: was not even comprehensible. I just don't feel like they're
- 1:45Speaker 3: the same anymore. I feel like they are different, especially
- 1:48Speaker 3: because online shopping is so massive now. Yeah, but they
- 1:51Speaker 3: used to be big. But at the same time, I
- 1:54Speaker 3: was so impulsive.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Well that's the thing.
- 1:56Speaker 3: How many Boxing Day sales have you been to?
- 1:59Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 1:59Speaker 2: A similar It was a similar tale. For g King,
- 2:03Speaker 2: I would trek up.
- 2:04Speaker 3: You grew up on the Ninch as well.
- 2:05Speaker 2: I grew up on the n Inch. So Southland and
- 2:07Speaker 2: Chatty were like, you know, the beacons. They were the
- 2:10Speaker 2: places to be.
- 2:11Speaker 3: So Chatty was just that bit too far, so that
- 2:14Speaker 3: was like the oracle would go there, but like Southland
- 2:17Speaker 3: that was closer because east Link didn't exist then, and
- 2:19Speaker 3: everybody who's not in Melbourne's going to be like, what
- 2:22Speaker 3: is this segment about. So we'll move away from location
- 2:25Speaker 3: based content in a very hot minute, we will, we will.
- 2:29Speaker 2: But no, I would grab the girls and we'd all
- 2:30Speaker 2: go together and we would we just buy mindlessly. We'd
- 2:33Speaker 2: nab all of the bargains. And I just feel like
- 2:36Speaker 2: that is not a way that I shop anymore. I
- 2:38Speaker 2: don't think I'm ever just like gals, I'll be at
- 2:40Speaker 2: the shops on Saturday, just like browsing and buying. Like,
- 2:43Speaker 2: that's just not the way that I shop now at all.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Do you ever do that?
- 2:47Speaker 3: Yeah, these days browsing and buying, I've tried. I've really tried.
- 2:51Speaker 3: In fact, after having so many months in COVID lockdown,
- 2:55Speaker 3: I feel like I tried. A couple of weeks ago.
- 2:58Speaker 3: I went to Chadston on a weekday, by the way,
- 3:00Speaker 3: because I'm still too anxious to go on a weekend
- 3:03Speaker 3: like that gives me mad anxiety at the best of
- 3:05Speaker 3: times in the lead up to Christmas, like chad Stenny's
- 3:08Speaker 3: bonkers at the best of times. But I just I
- 3:12Speaker 3: didn't like it. I just I want to browse online.
- 3:15Speaker 3: I want to have all of my options in front
- 3:17Speaker 3: of me. I want to open fifty tabs. I want
- 3:20Speaker 3: to then play a process of elimination, closing all the tabs.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Then I want to look at that particular dress that
- 3:25Speaker 3: I like. Then I want to go look at that
- 3:27Speaker 3: brand on Instagram and see other girls wearing that dress,
- 3:30Speaker 3: and then maybe I'll potentially buy it. Like That's how
- 3:32Speaker 3: it works for me, and you just don't have that
- 3:35Speaker 3: with an in store experience, Jake.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Well, that's so true. I feel like we've become so
- 3:38Speaker 2: used to like the multi faceted journey of online shopping,
- 3:42Speaker 2: where we like, we browse, we place the order, we
- 3:46Speaker 2: wait for the order, the order comes, we unpack the order,
- 3:49Speaker 2: like there's so many steps to it, whereas if you're
- 3:51Speaker 2: just shopping in store, it's like over like that.
- 3:53Speaker 3: Yeah, and I feel like I get online and then like,
- 3:55Speaker 3: well does the iconic have the best deal? How much
- 3:58Speaker 3: cash back? Am I going to get? On shop? All right,
- 4:00Speaker 3: maybe I'll have a look at Meyer's website. I think
- 4:02Speaker 3: Maya does that Brown, Like, I look around for the
- 4:05Speaker 3: best deal and then try and get a better deal,
- 4:07Speaker 3: and then it comes in the mail and I'm excited
- 4:09Speaker 3: because I'm like, oh presents. Yeah, you just don't get
- 4:11Speaker 3: that with shopping in store.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 4:13Speaker 3: I kind of missed the shopping in store experience.
- 4:16Speaker 2: I do a little bit. But you know what I
- 4:17Speaker 2: don't miss is the shop attendance at General Pants hustling me.
- 4:22Speaker 3: No straight in they've been with you.
- 4:23Speaker 4: Guys.
- 4:23Speaker 3: If you work at General Pants, obviously you're one of
- 4:26Speaker 3: the good ones because you're listening to this podcast.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Correct.
- 4:29Speaker 3: But to everybody else who is a not cheese on
- 4:32Speaker 3: the money listener that works at General Pants, you need
- 4:34Speaker 3: a lesson in etiquette.
- 4:36Speaker 2: You just need to relax and please stop talking to me.
- 4:39Speaker 2: I'm just trying to try on these pants.
- 4:41Speaker 3: So were they general enough to it?
- 4:43Speaker 2: A good one? A good one?
- 4:44Speaker 3: Thank you? Thank you?
- 4:45Speaker 2: How big are these sales? Like? Are they still as
- 4:48Speaker 2: big as they once were? Look?
- 4:50Speaker 3: Gee, this is an absolutely enormous day in the shopping calendar.
- 4:54Speaker 3: Last year, Australians actually spent close to three billion dollars
- 4:57Speaker 3: on these sales. Like, g we spent, as Australians, get this,
- 5:03Speaker 3: three billion dollars the day after we're supposedly meant to
- 5:06Speaker 3: be grateful for the things we already have.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a strange.
- 5:12Speaker 3: It's just a very strange reality that we live in.
- 5:15Speaker 3: So obviously it's a massive day of consumption, and I
- 5:18Speaker 3: just don't think it should be. I just ah, We've
- 5:20Speaker 3: just gone from celebrating our family and.
- 5:23Speaker 4: Being grateful for everything that we have to try to
- 5:26Speaker 4: get the cheapest deal on something that five minutes before
- 5:28Speaker 4: we saw we didn't even know we need it.
- 5:30Speaker 3: Like it just it doesn't sit well with the values
- 5:33Speaker 3: that I now hold in saying that. Historically I always
- 5:36Speaker 3: bought into it and I was really excited about it.
- 5:38Speaker 3: And I love a good shop and I love a
- 5:39Speaker 3: good bargain, and like my mum, Queen of bargains, she's
- 5:43Speaker 3: exactly the same. But I think as a part of
- 5:45Speaker 3: my money story and my personal growth, I've really grown
- 5:48Speaker 3: from being quite impulsive with my spending to being quite
- 5:52Speaker 3: pragmatic about it. And I really do enjoy the process
- 5:55Speaker 3: of buying something because I feel like I put lots
- 5:58Speaker 3: of time and energy and effe into that process so
- 6:01Speaker 3: that I know, Okay, well I've got this new dress,
- 6:04Speaker 3: I have thought a fair bit about what it's going
- 6:06Speaker 3: to go with. Like I bought a new dress the
- 6:08Speaker 3: other week, actually je Lovely, coincidentally from the Iconic, which
- 6:12Speaker 3: I think I got like a good twenty percent or
- 6:14Speaker 3: something cash, but it was a very good deal. But
- 6:17Speaker 3: I remember having it up and then googling similar dresses
- 6:21Speaker 3: and like, it's like this beige knit dress, really like it.
- 6:24Speaker 3: But I was googling, like styling beige knit dress and
- 6:27Speaker 3: like just seeing what other outfits I could make with it,
- 6:29Speaker 3: and that's just yeah past me. She'd be like, what
- 6:32Speaker 3: are you doing? Why are you doing that? Whereas currently
- 6:34Speaker 3: I'm like, oh, I didn't even think about it. That
- 6:36Speaker 3: would look chic with a blazer over it, Like I've
- 6:38Speaker 3: got a blazer, Like I don't know. I really like
- 6:40Speaker 3: this idea of bringing things into my wardrobe or bringing
- 6:44Speaker 3: things into my life with purpose, and I just feel
- 6:47Speaker 3: like I have a different level of appreciation for them
- 6:50Speaker 3: than just impulse purchasing. I'm absolutely not saying everybody needs that.
- 6:54Speaker 3: I'm just saying, this is my money story at the moment.
- 6:56Speaker 3: This is how this is working for me, and this
- 6:58Speaker 3: is how my purchasing journey goes. But oh, I used
- 7:01Speaker 3: to be quite impulsive, and I just feel like I'm
- 7:03Speaker 3: not anymore. But this is why we're having this episode
- 7:06Speaker 3: because I think there are a lot of people out
- 7:07Speaker 3: there who are like, oh, I wish I wasn't as
- 7:09Speaker 3: impulsive during sales.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Definitely, the this could maybe be a bit of a
- 7:14Speaker 2: difficult question, but hey, if I'm going to ask it
- 7:16Speaker 2: of anyone, you are the lady to ask it of. Oh,
- 7:20Speaker 2: what percentage do you think of that almost three billion
- 7:24Speaker 2: would be impulse purchases?
- 7:26Speaker 3: I think a lot of it because not many people
- 7:29Speaker 3: are going to plan for three billion dollars worth of spending.
- 7:34Speaker 3: And if I look at what I was doing when
- 7:36Speaker 3: I was spending on Boxing Day, it was quite impulsive,
- 7:39Speaker 3: and from my own personal experience, like I don't really
- 7:44Speaker 3: think that lots of people go, you know what, We're
- 7:46Speaker 3: just going to go out, We'll go to Chatty, we'll
- 7:48Speaker 3: go to you know, Pacific Fair or wherever you're going,
- 7:51Speaker 3: and we're going to go shopping. Like in saying that,
- 7:55Speaker 3: I think that there is a really good piece of
- 7:57Speaker 3: power in this as well, because if it's on sale
- 8:00Speaker 3: and you needed to buy it, that is a brilliant
- 8:02Speaker 3: time to pick it up. And it's actually something that
- 8:04Speaker 3: my partner and I, even though I just said I
- 8:07Speaker 3: don't really go impulse boxing day shopping, we have gone
- 8:10Speaker 3: planned boxing day shopping. And as a lot of you know,
- 8:14Speaker 3: we are currently in the process of redoing our backyard.
- 8:17Speaker 3: We will be purchasing an outdoor setting with the Boxing
- 8:20Speaker 3: Day sales because I know that the company that I
- 8:22Speaker 3: really want my outdoor setting to come from is going
- 8:25Speaker 3: to be on sale after Christmas, and it's like the
- 8:27Speaker 3: Christmas present to ourselves. But we're happy to wait till
- 8:31Speaker 3: after Christmas because I'd prefer a discount than having the
- 8:33Speaker 3: item on the day. So for me, I feel like
- 8:36Speaker 3: that works, and I mean that could also be a
- 8:37Speaker 3: savor money win. Yeah, if you've missed all of the
- 8:40Speaker 3: Black Friday sales, in the Cyber Monday sales, just be like, hey,
- 8:44Speaker 3: g your presence coming on Boxing.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Day, Well that's it. You don't see that many people
- 8:48Speaker 2: on Christmas Day itself, you know, like you might see
- 8:51Speaker 2: part of your family and then you might see the
- 8:53Speaker 2: others the next day, so you don't be strategic about it.
- 8:56Speaker 3: That's a really good money tip as well. Ge, try
- 8:58Speaker 3: and push Christmas out. Aw, we just convince your kids
- 9:02Speaker 3: do it.
- 9:02Speaker 2: Honestly, I thought it was.
- 9:04Speaker 3: On the thirtieth. What do you mean It's not on
- 9:05Speaker 3: the same day as news.
- 9:07Speaker 2: So weird, brilliant Okay, Now I'm curious to hear your
- 9:11Speaker 2: thoughts be on the pros and cons of shopping online.
- 9:15Speaker 2: Versus in store when it comes to this very special
- 9:18Speaker 2: day of figure. Obviously, you know, if you're in store,
- 9:21Speaker 2: you've got the general pants people hussling you. But beyond that,
- 9:24Speaker 2: what are the other benefits and cons I guess of
- 9:28Speaker 2: shopping online? Oh, that was a poorly phrase to hear
- 9:30Speaker 2: what I'm saying.
- 9:31Speaker 3: You know what I get it like, this is an
- 9:32Speaker 3: introverts dream, George. All right, So there are a lot
- 9:36Speaker 3: of pros to shopping online. You don't have to deal
- 9:38Speaker 3: with people, you don't have to deal with crowds. That
- 9:40Speaker 3: is brilliant. You don't have to struggle in lines, you
- 9:43Speaker 3: don't have to line up for parking. We've all done it.
- 9:46Speaker 3: We've gone to the boxing day sales at some point
- 9:49Speaker 3: in our lives, and we have driven around in that
- 9:51Speaker 3: car parck for at least twenty minutes to find a
- 9:53Speaker 3: park twenty minutes. It's probably being really lean as well.
- 9:57Speaker 3: I find this works for me, but I'm not sure
- 9:59Speaker 3: if it works for everybody else. But I'm not as
- 10:01Speaker 3: tempted to buy things I don't need because they're not
- 10:03Speaker 3: in front of me with a big red sales sticker
- 10:06Speaker 3: on them. I'm often usually quite directed, like I'm not
- 10:09Speaker 3: walking past a shop and accidentally go in. I literally
- 10:12Speaker 3: go to the Iconic or go to the David Jones
- 10:14Speaker 3: website and I know what I'm looking for. I'm not
- 10:17Speaker 3: saying that mindless browsing and stuff doesn't happen, but it
- 10:20Speaker 3: is harder to quote walk by a shop and be like, oh,
- 10:23Speaker 3: we'll just pop in here as well. There aren't any
- 10:25Speaker 3: salespeople in your ear trying to convince you to buy
- 10:29Speaker 3: or not convince you to buy. If you're in one
- 10:31Speaker 3: of the big Australian department stores where it's very hard
- 10:34Speaker 3: to find a staff member to begin with.
- 10:36Speaker 2: They need to hire more people. Yeah, but if you're
- 10:39Speaker 2: listening Mayer and David Chair.
- 10:40Speaker 4: Just attack them as well with coming for you. You're easily
- 10:45Speaker 4: able to compare prices online, which I obviously love, but
- 10:49Speaker 4: money Win, David Jones, Maya, all of them.
- 10:52Speaker 3: They actually do price matching Georgia, do they? Yes? And
- 10:56Speaker 3: I did this the other day, much to the dismay
- 10:59Speaker 3: of the woman in the lingerie section at David Jones.
- 11:02Speaker 3: So I was in David Jones because I didn't want
- 11:04Speaker 3: to go into Maya because Maya was hectic, because Maya
- 11:07Speaker 3: had a sale on and David Jones did not, and
- 11:09Speaker 3: I wanted This is probably TMI, but that's okay. There's
- 11:12Speaker 3: only a million or so people listening to this podcast.
- 11:14Speaker 3: I wanted the pink Calvin Klein like matching set, like
- 11:20Speaker 3: you know, the like standard real basic, like pink crop
- 11:23Speaker 3: top and pink undie bottom. Yes, I really wanted those tortures,
- 11:27Speaker 3: but there's no way I was spending full price on them.
- 11:29Speaker 3: They worth thirty percent off at Maya, and so I
- 11:33Speaker 3: got picked them up at David Jones and went up
- 11:35Speaker 3: to the count and I was like, hey, do price
- 11:36Speaker 3: match and she was like, oh, I don't know. She
- 11:38Speaker 3: was really cagy about it. G I was like, well, sus,
- 11:41Speaker 3: I know you do, and she was like, well where
- 11:43Speaker 3: am I price matching? And I was like, here's the
- 11:45Speaker 3: ad for Maya. She was real cagy, but the girl
- 11:48Speaker 3: beside her was like, yeah, we price match. See, yeah,
- 11:50Speaker 3: this is how you do it, and showed her anyway.
- 11:52Speaker 3: I got the discount. I wasn't a GRESSI bubble sent rude.
- 11:55Speaker 3: I promise she probably didn't like me. I mean, if
- 11:57Speaker 3: I worked in retail, i'd also be a bit like this.
- 12:00Speaker 2: But I got the.
- 12:02Speaker 3: Discount so price matching. I don't know if it works
- 12:05Speaker 3: for like boxing day sales, where everything is like sale
- 12:08Speaker 3: price is final and it's super discounted. But if you're
- 12:11Speaker 3: in David Jones or a different department store and you
- 12:14Speaker 3: find yourself with a product that you want to purchase,
- 12:17Speaker 3: google it. Google the podcast, same thing. They care not
- 12:20Speaker 3: gonna like us. They'll probably never get a sponsorus for
- 12:23Speaker 3: this reason. George JB Hi Fi do the same thing. Okay,
- 12:26Speaker 3: So if you're in JB and you're like, I'm gonna
- 12:28Speaker 3: buy this iPod. Wait, do you still buy iPods still
- 12:31Speaker 3: for sale?
- 12:32Speaker 2: iPhone like you could iPhone?
- 12:35Speaker 3: Yeah, maybe laptops, whatever you're buying. You could be buying
- 12:39Speaker 3: a podcast, microphone, Google it and see what the cheapest
- 12:42Speaker 3: price is and then show the guy in the store
- 12:44Speaker 3: and say, hey, it's one hundred and seventy dollars in store,
- 12:46Speaker 3: but it was two hundred and forty on your shelves,
- 12:49Speaker 3: and they'll say, no problem o. Georgia King one hundred
- 12:52Speaker 3: and seventy bucks for you, which is a money wind.
- 12:55Speaker 3: So if you're shopping in store, okay, just google it.
- 12:58Speaker 3: I just feel like that's a good money tick. You're welcome,
- 13:00Speaker 3: We're done here.
- 13:01Speaker 2: We're done here. So that was a benefit to shopping
- 13:04Speaker 2: in store. Then I guess what are the other benefits
- 13:06Speaker 2: to shopping install? You can try stuff on. That's a bonus.
- 13:10Speaker 3: Oh, you can try stuff on. Yeah, that's a massive bonus.
- 13:13Speaker 3: Because I hate measuring myself and like doing the measure charts.
- 13:17Speaker 3: So most of the time if I'm buying online, I'll
- 13:19Speaker 3: just buy my standard size and hope it works, and
- 13:23Speaker 3: sometimes it doesn't, sometimes it does. It's a bit hit
- 13:26Speaker 3: or miss, and you don't have to wait for the product, which,
- 13:29Speaker 3: to be honest, I actually like waiting for the product.
- 13:32Speaker 3: I mean, if I need it immediately, not great, But
- 13:34Speaker 3: I do usually like waiting for it because I lack anticipation,
- 13:37Speaker 3: and then I genuinely feel like it's a present for me.
- 13:40Speaker 3: And you best believe if it's free gift wrapping, I
- 13:42Speaker 3: have hit that it's a gift button. I have done
- 13:45Speaker 3: that because it is a gift for me. And also
- 13:48Speaker 3: you don't have to pay for shipping, which most of
- 13:50Speaker 3: the time you do if you are shopping online and
- 13:53Speaker 3: haven't met that like, oh, if you spend more than
- 13:55Speaker 3: one hundred dollars, it's free shipping amount.
- 13:57Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, there's a few perks both ways.
- 14:01Speaker 3: Oh, I mean the other perk, George, is it's fun,
- 14:03Speaker 3: Like going shopping is fun. Like we're not throwing it
- 14:06Speaker 3: under the bus because it's the worst thing ever, Like
- 14:08Speaker 3: I do like going shopping.
- 14:10Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, no, no, no, no, you're right, it is fun.
- 14:15Speaker 2: But I feel like we've just all become so accustomed
- 14:18Speaker 2: to shopping from the comfort of our couches at any
- 14:22Speaker 2: time of day or night, and to actually physically go
- 14:25Speaker 2: to the stores, like I honestly would not consider going
- 14:28Speaker 2: to the boxing day sales. I honestly didn't really think
- 14:31Speaker 2: it was a thing anymore.
- 14:32Speaker 3: But no, it's definitely still a thing. That's why we
- 14:34Speaker 3: have this entire podcast on it.
- 14:36Speaker 2: Well, and that's what I learned in researching it today. Okay,
- 14:42Speaker 2: let's move on to our big top tips for making
- 14:45Speaker 2: the most of the sales. Obviously, at Cheese on the Money,
- 14:48Speaker 2: we don't endorse sales as a marketing technique when it
- 14:51Speaker 2: comes to encouraging us to buy things that we don't
- 14:55Speaker 2: need for reduced prices just because a gal loves a bargain.
- 15:01Speaker 2: How can we use these strategically without just throwing our
- 15:04Speaker 2: money away and sabotaging our savings.
- 15:07Speaker 3: Well, as I said before, only purchasing things you're planning for.
- 15:10Speaker 3: And I think that that's where the notes app in
- 15:12Speaker 3: your phone is really going to play into this and
- 15:15Speaker 3: be quite helpful. Keep a note, work out what you
- 15:17Speaker 3: want to purchase. If you've got birthdays coming up in January, February, March,
- 15:21Speaker 3: maybe this is a really good opportunity to purchase some
- 15:24Speaker 3: of those gifts so that you can get ahead of
- 15:26Speaker 3: the game and get a discount on the way, Like,
- 15:29Speaker 3: if there is a sale coming up, I don't think
- 15:31Speaker 3: it should necessarily be oh my gosh, I wonder if
- 15:34Speaker 3: I can buy anything cheap. I think it should actually
- 15:36Speaker 3: be a little bit more along the lines of like, ooh,
- 15:39Speaker 3: a sale. Do I need to utilize this opportunity, Like
- 15:43Speaker 3: is there something that I'm going to need to buy
- 15:45Speaker 3: in the future that I could get at a discounted
- 15:47Speaker 3: price because someone's on sale. And I think that that's
- 15:50Speaker 3: not the way that we mentally usually look at sales. Mentally,
- 15:54Speaker 3: we go, oh, we can get cheap stuff for ourselves,
- 15:57Speaker 3: when in reality, like I've got my dad's birthday in January,
- 16:01Speaker 3: it would be very smart of me to buy his
- 16:03Speaker 3: present on Boxing Day because that means I could potentially
- 16:07Speaker 3: get a discount on whatever it is, But it means
- 16:10Speaker 3: that we need to be planned. So being planned, I
- 16:13Speaker 3: guess is the biggest tip here and working out what
- 16:16Speaker 3: expenses have I got coming up? What do I need
- 16:18Speaker 3: to purchase or is there something I've had my eye on,
- 16:21Speaker 3: and what is my proposed budget for that item, like
- 16:25Speaker 3: not just going or what should I buy?
- 16:28Speaker 2: More.
- 16:29Speaker 3: Oh, I want to buy my dad a birthday present.
- 16:31Speaker 3: My budget's fifty dollars. That might mean I could get
- 16:34Speaker 3: him a better birthday present while still staying within my
- 16:36Speaker 3: own budget.
- 16:37Speaker 2: Smart. Smart. I think it's also a good time be
- 16:42Speaker 2: it to kind of tick those boring big household items
- 16:46Speaker 2: that you may need to purchase off your list. So
- 16:48Speaker 2: whether that's like a washing machine or you know, white
- 16:52Speaker 2: goods that are boring but essential, I mean you can
- 16:55Speaker 2: also get them off marketplace. So actually abandon abandon this
- 16:59Speaker 2: unless you're rich, use this sale, but if you're not,
- 17:02Speaker 2: marketplaces where it's at. That was a helpful tip from me.
- 17:06Speaker 4: Yeah, So Georgia's tips are don't go to the Boxing
- 17:09Speaker 4: day sales, go to Vinie's.
- 17:11Speaker 3: And also jump on Marketplace. It's genius, it's very She's
- 17:15Speaker 3: on the money of you. Thank you.
- 17:17Speaker 2: Our next tip, HEV, is to of course do your research,
- 17:21Speaker 2: talk us through it.
- 17:22Speaker 3: Go figure. Victoria wants you to do your research. Literally.
- 17:26Speaker 3: There are so many sites now that colate colate. Who
- 17:30Speaker 3: am I collate? Colate? Is that how you say it?
- 17:33Speaker 3: Colgate coldgate? They culgate the best sales that they actually like,
- 17:38Speaker 3: pull all the best sales together and then they categorize
- 17:41Speaker 3: them really well so that you can see where to
- 17:43Speaker 3: find the best deal, which is super helpful. So do
- 17:45Speaker 3: your research. Find a site like that. I really like
- 17:48Speaker 3: jumping online and seeing what is up. I'm also really
- 17:51Speaker 3: good at using Pinterest to save things that I want
- 17:54Speaker 3: to purchase later, so I know where to go to
- 17:56Speaker 3: and it's super helpful. So when you head out, you've
- 17:59Speaker 3: got your shopping list all together.
- 18:01Speaker 2: What's the deal with Pinterest? Do you need like an account?
- 18:04Speaker 3: This is not what this episode is about, but yes,
- 18:07Speaker 3: you do need an Pinterest account to use it. But
- 18:09Speaker 3: it's free and it's essentially like online pin boards. Like
- 18:13Speaker 3: it's like a pinboard and you add all the things
- 18:15Speaker 3: that you want to add to your pin board and
- 18:17Speaker 3: you can have as many pin boards as you like
- 18:18Speaker 3: and quite active on Pinterest. Actually okay, not publicly all
- 18:22Speaker 3: of my things in private, they're just random boards of
- 18:25Speaker 3: things that I seek inspiration. Is that a thing that
- 18:28Speaker 3: people want to see? Should we make like a cheese
- 18:30Speaker 3: on the money? Pinterest's awesome that puzzle?
- 18:33Speaker 2: Would it be?
- 18:34Speaker 3: I wonder you've never been on pinterest heavy?
- 18:37Speaker 2: And let's go to a break back after this victoria divine.
- 18:42Speaker 2: Our next tip here is to stay calm, keep calm,
- 18:46Speaker 2: carry on, yes as they as they say, How does
- 18:49Speaker 2: this help us out when it comes to the sales?
- 18:51Speaker 3: I just feel like in store there's like this wild
- 18:54Speaker 3: vibe about the experience where frenzied shopping and spending is
- 18:58Speaker 3: totally encouraged, and I just feel like it becomes kind
- 19:01Speaker 3: of like a competition to get the best deal and
- 19:03Speaker 3: buy the most and I just, yeah, I really don't
- 19:06Speaker 3: like that. Like it's there's nothing sexy about going to
- 19:09Speaker 3: the shops and being the one that's carrying the most
- 19:12Speaker 3: bags at the end of the day, like unless you
- 19:14Speaker 3: were planning on purchasing a whole heap of cookwar and
- 19:17Speaker 3: they had to give you multiple bags to carry it.
- 19:20Speaker 3: Home in I just genuinely feel like there's nothing that
- 19:23Speaker 3: sexy about buying the most and getting the best deals,
- 19:26Speaker 3: and like, yes, there is something incredibly sexy about getting
- 19:30Speaker 3: a discount and getting the best deal on an item
- 19:32Speaker 3: you already needed, but going, oh my god, gee, these
- 19:35Speaker 3: shoes they were one hundred dollars originally and I got
- 19:38Speaker 3: them for fifteen bucks. It's like, great, but did you
- 19:41Speaker 3: need the shoes? Gee? Because like, that's just fifteen dollars
- 19:44Speaker 3: you spent that wasn't in line with your values. So
- 19:47Speaker 3: for me, I think we're trying to really reframe what
- 19:50Speaker 3: spending and saving actually means because I think too many
- 19:53Speaker 3: times people get so hooked on the sale price because
- 19:57Speaker 3: they're like, but it's a massive discount. It's like, but
- 20:00Speaker 3: if you didn't need it, that's actually a waste of money.
- 20:02Speaker 2: Yeah, correct, Yeah, So I think.
- 20:04Speaker 3: That's one of my comments. And then the last bit
- 20:07Speaker 3: on that g is remember that you're only saving money
- 20:09Speaker 3: if you're using their sale items and they're actually things
- 20:12Speaker 3: that you actually need and it was a planned purchase,
- 20:14Speaker 3: Like it's not. Yeah, Anyway, I won't go on about
- 20:17Speaker 3: that because you guys have heard it all from me before.
- 20:20Speaker 2: In terms of staying calme, though, v that's hard to
- 20:24Speaker 2: do when you're at the shops and it's like sensory overload.
- 20:27Speaker 2: The music is pumping, there's like lights flashing everywhere, there's
- 20:31Speaker 2: people wanting to get in your ear and tell you
- 20:33Speaker 2: all about the hottest deals. Like, what are our tips
- 20:36Speaker 2: for shutting that out? Should we shop with earphones sunglasses on?
- 20:39Speaker 2: I'm not sure what are we thinking?
- 20:42Speaker 3: I don't know. I'm not gonna give tips on that,
- 20:45Speaker 3: but I just feel like that's not your vibe.
- 20:48Speaker 2: Just don't go, okay, is that bad?
- 20:51Speaker 3: I don't know. Just don't go like that would give
- 20:54Speaker 3: me mad anxiety. I would not like that situation at all.
- 20:58Speaker 3: And yeah, I will see you guys later. Have fun.
- 21:00Speaker 3: I'll catch up with you for a coffee after.
- 21:02Speaker 2: Yeah, wholesome. I think you should just pop in some
- 21:04Speaker 2: like Bonaver and walk the chaotic holes of Chadstone and
- 21:09Speaker 2: just make a day of it, you reckon. I think
- 21:10Speaker 2: it could be calm. I think so. I think it
- 21:12Speaker 2: would be better than listening to like Olivia Rodrigo blasted it.
- 21:17Speaker 2: You know that was a young reference from George. I'm
- 21:20Speaker 2: pretty fancy.
- 21:21Speaker 3: I was about to say it thank you.
- 21:23Speaker 2: I know it felt weird coming out of my mouth.
- 21:25Speaker 3: This episode is actually relatively manic for us. I'm enjoying it,
- 21:30Speaker 3: enjoying it, but can you tell we're both just super
- 21:33Speaker 3: excited for a bit of a break and super excited
- 21:35Speaker 3: for Christmas. We're talking about sales and we're like, guys,
- 21:38Speaker 3: live within your values. I hope you've enjoyed this episode.
- 21:41Speaker 3: Is that I don't know. Maybe they'll love it, maybe
- 21:43Speaker 3: they won't love it.
- 21:44Speaker 2: Yeah, time will tell. Okay. Our next tip B is
- 21:48Speaker 2: to avoid temptation and to not shop mindlessly. This is
- 21:53Speaker 2: why I think shopping online is a smarter idea than
- 21:56Speaker 2: shopping in store, because it does help you avoid being suck.
- 22:00Speaker 3: In to those spontaneous purchases that we don't need absolutely,
- 22:03Speaker 3: and I think that that is a very good tip.
- 22:04Speaker 3: At the end of the day, Boxing Day was not
- 22:08Speaker 3: invented to save you money personally. It was designed to
- 22:12Speaker 3: help retailers make money. So I think we all need
- 22:15Speaker 3: to remind ourselves of that throughout the day. If you're
- 22:18Speaker 3: tempted for an item that you don't really need.
- 22:20Speaker 2: Yeah, one hundred percent. Our last tip here VD is
- 22:24Speaker 2: to remember that Boxing Day it's not really just a day.
- 22:27Speaker 2: It's more like a day that extends onto week, and
- 22:30Speaker 2: then weeks and then even into January.
- 22:32Speaker 3: You know, I remember when Boxing Day was literally a day.
- 22:34Speaker 3: It is not like that anymore. So do remember that
- 22:38Speaker 3: there's no rush. You don't need to buy everything on
- 22:41Speaker 3: that day. But if you are planning on purchasing something,
- 22:43Speaker 3: I would genuinely jump on early, get it done, get
- 22:46Speaker 3: it out of mind, and not think about it again.
- 22:49Speaker 2: Love it before we head off. V You always encourage
- 22:53Speaker 2: us to put twenty four hours between ourselves and our purchases,
- 22:56Speaker 2: to kind of move away from that instant gratification and
- 22:59Speaker 2: you know, take away the emotion from it. I guess
- 23:01Speaker 2: how does that rule apply when it comes to events
- 23:04Speaker 2: sales like this?
- 23:05Speaker 3: So I think you should already have been planning this. So,
- 23:07Speaker 3: for example, next year, I'm going to one of my
- 23:09Speaker 3: best friend's weddings and I need a silver pair of
- 23:12Speaker 3: strappy shoes to wear for the wedding. So I've already
- 23:15Speaker 3: been looking online. I kind of know what I want,
- 23:17Speaker 3: and I'm making the plans, but I'll probably pick them
- 23:20Speaker 3: up on Boxing Day sale when I'm picking up my
- 23:22Speaker 3: outdoor setting because I need those things. But I've been
- 23:25Speaker 3: thinking about that for way more than twenty four hours,
- 23:27Speaker 3: because that's a planned purchase. When we say put twenty
- 23:31Speaker 3: four hours between you and you're spending, it's not for
- 23:33Speaker 3: planned purchases. It's for those impulse purchases that you really
- 23:37Speaker 3: want to make in the moment. And that's when i'd say,
- 23:40Speaker 3: either put twenty four hours between you and your spending,
- 23:42Speaker 3: or if you're like, hey, this discount is just too good,
- 23:44Speaker 3: have a look at what the returns policy is. Because
- 23:47Speaker 3: the returns policy, if you can return it, great, that
- 23:50Speaker 3: might be a really good option for you. But more
- 23:53Speaker 3: often than not, when sales happens, there's no refunds or
- 23:57Speaker 3: no returns on sale items, and often when you realize that,
- 24:00Speaker 3: you'll be like, hold on, maybe I don't want this
- 24:02Speaker 3: as much as I can because that opportunity is being
- 24:05Speaker 3: taken away from me and I don't feel as certain
- 24:07Speaker 3: in that purchases as I did before. So again, just
- 24:11Speaker 3: making sure that you're making purchases that are in line
- 24:13Speaker 3: with your values. Another thing that I have found really
- 24:16Speaker 3: helpful when I really want something but I know it's
- 24:18Speaker 3: in the moment, is I take a quick picture of it,
- 24:21Speaker 3: so it's on my phone, so I can't forget it,
- 24:23Speaker 3: and then I can go back to it, look at
- 24:25Speaker 3: it and be like do I really want that? And
- 24:26Speaker 3: I might just go back before I finish the final
- 24:29Speaker 3: shop or something. But in a perfect world, we put
- 24:31Speaker 3: a minimum of twenty four hours between us and our spending.
- 24:35Speaker 2: Stunning, all right, So to wrap up today, we need
- 24:38Speaker 2: to write our lists and check them twice. We need
- 24:41Speaker 2: to do our research. We need to stay come and
- 24:43Speaker 2: get the bon avert on the playlist while we're shopping around.
- 24:46Speaker 2: We need to avoid spontaneous purchases, and we need to
- 24:50Speaker 2: remember that the sales will likely go on for longer
- 24:52Speaker 2: than just December twenty sixth, So let's not be frenzied
- 24:55Speaker 2: about it. Let's not feel the pressure to buy. Bye
- 24:57Speaker 2: bye fee lord. I think that is all we have.
- 24:59Speaker 3: Time, it is, and I think the last thing I
- 25:02Speaker 3: want to leave you guys with is there's always going
- 25:05Speaker 3: to be another opportunity. There will always be another sale.
- 25:08Speaker 3: There will always be another opportunity for you to purchase something.
- 25:11Speaker 3: It doesn't have to happen on that sale day. So
- 25:13Speaker 3: I think we need to step out of that frenzied
- 25:16Speaker 3: feeling of like, oh my gosh, I need to get
- 25:17Speaker 3: it now though it's on sale, like there will always
- 25:20Speaker 3: be another opportunity. I promise you that, my friends. But
- 25:23Speaker 3: with that g I think that's all we have time
- 25:25Speaker 3: for today. So just before we head off, we'd like
- 25:28Speaker 3: to acknowledge and pay respect to Australia's Aboriginal and Torrestraight
- 25:32Speaker 3: Islander peoples. They're the traditional custodians of the lands, the
- 25:35Speaker 3: waterways and the skies all across Australia. We thank you
- 25:39Speaker 3: for sharing and for caring for the land on which
- 25:41Speaker 3: we are able to learn. We pay respects to elders
- 25:44Speaker 3: past and present, and we share our friendship and our kindness.
- 25:47Speaker 2: And to remember, guys, that the advice shared on She's
- 25:49Speaker 2: on the Money is general in nature and does not
- 25:52Speaker 2: consider your individual circumstances. She's on the Money exists purely
- 25:56Speaker 2: for educational purposes and should not be relied upon to
- 25:59Speaker 2: make it investment or a financial decision, and we promise.
