- 0:04Speaker 1: the Order Kerni Whoalbury and a waddery woman. And before
- 0:08Speaker 1: we get started on She's on the Money podcast, I
- 0:11Speaker 1: would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land
- 0:14Speaker 1: of which this podcast is recorded on a wondery country,
- 0:18Speaker 1: acknowledging the elders, the ancestors and the next generation coming
- 0:22Speaker 1: through as this podcast is about connecting, empowering, knowledge sharing
- 0:27Speaker 1: and the storytelling of you to make a difference for
- 0:30Speaker 1: today and lasting impact for tomorrow.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Let's get into it.
- 0:34Speaker 3: She's on the Money, She's on the Money.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money, the podcast
- 1:00Speaker 2: Millennials who Want Financial Freedom. Today, my friends, is Friday,
- 1:04Speaker 2: which means it is time to get our little team together,
- 1:07Speaker 2: and by little, I mean it's just jess and I today, Jessica,
- 1:11Speaker 2: Miss Beck. We're going to be talking today about our
- 1:13Speaker 2: incredible She's on the Money community. We're also going to
- 1:16Speaker 2: be sharing our favorite money wins. We're going to be
- 1:18Speaker 2: helping to answer do you see money dilemma, which this
- 1:20Speaker 2: week is all about explaining salary packaging. And we're going
- 1:24Speaker 2: to be unpacking something that you slid into our DMS
- 1:26Speaker 2: about and this week we're talking about taking a step
- 1:29Speaker 2: back in your career to support your partner's goals. It's
- 1:33Speaker 2: just GRICI. How has your week been?
- 1:35Speaker 4: It's been good. I feel like I'm just kind of
- 1:38Speaker 4: plodding along. Nothing super exciting. What did I do? I
- 1:41Speaker 4: went to Pilate's Oh Big Doganaje queen us. Apart from that,
- 1:47Speaker 4: I don't think I did anything exciting at all. Really,
- 1:50Speaker 4: how about you own to Bali? Yeah, yeah, bolthers that.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I went to Bali and then I came back
- 1:53Speaker 2: from Bali and now we're here. I didn't get Bali belly.
- 1:57Speaker 4: That's a win for you.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Honestly surprising given my ability to eat anything that's put
- 2:03Speaker 2: in front of me, Like you know, when they're like, oh,
- 2:05Speaker 2: don't eat this and don't eat that. If you're in Bali,
- 2:07Speaker 2: I'm like, it looks good though, probably gonna give it.
- 2:09Speaker 2: He a crack. So we did that. That's actually really
- 2:12Speaker 2: fun because it was for my best friend's wedding. We
- 2:15Speaker 2: had her wedding and also her hands party. I obviously
- 2:18Speaker 2: haven't uploaded any wedding pictures yet. Because she hasn't uploaded
- 2:21Speaker 2: any wedding pictures yet. Yeah, I feel like those are
- 2:24Speaker 2: the rules, Like you're not allowed to post pictures of
- 2:26Speaker 2: the bride and groom until the bride and groom have
- 2:27Speaker 2: posted pictures.
- 2:28Speaker 4: I see like it goes without saying it's just.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Seen pictures of her on the internet already. Am I
- 2:33Speaker 2: allowed to be salty about that or not. I'm not
- 2:35Speaker 2: my wedding, but like.
- 2:37Speaker 4: I wouldn't do it. But that's just me and we
- 2:39Speaker 4: all we all know how much I love to be
- 2:42Speaker 4: posting on my Instagram. True, I feel like the line
- 2:46Speaker 4: in the sand and the hands was Barbie theed it
- 2:48Speaker 4: makes Barbie week.
- 2:49Speaker 2: It is Barbie Week. We haven't even seen Barbie yet
- 2:52Speaker 2: because we haven't had time, but we're going as a
- 2:54Speaker 2: team very soon and I'm very excited about that.
- 2:57Speaker 4: You love to say it smashing all the records as
- 2:59Speaker 4: well well, like the highest grossing female directed movie. I
- 3:03Speaker 4: feel like it's the highest grossing so far this year.
- 3:06Speaker 4: Wasn't it absolutely wild?
- 3:07Speaker 2: But I think my favorite thing coming out of the
- 3:09Speaker 2: Barbie movie, having not seen it yet, is it's being
- 3:12Speaker 2: slammed by a lot of American journalists and someone did
- 3:16Speaker 2: a little montage of pictures of those American journalists, and
- 3:20Speaker 2: all of them are beautiful blonde women, and I'm like,
- 3:23Speaker 2: the irony is not lost, Like you're slamming Barbie, yet
- 3:27Speaker 2: here you are.
- 3:27Speaker 4: Yeah, I feel like the people who are slamming Barbie
- 3:30Speaker 4: from what I've seen, not having seen the film yet,
- 3:33Speaker 4: it seems to be people who are taking it at
- 3:36Speaker 4: surface level and not really looking into how it relates
- 3:39Speaker 4: to the plight of women. And I've heard that it's
- 3:42Speaker 4: very clever, the way that they put it together and
- 3:44Speaker 4: the themes that they touch on and the way that
- 3:46Speaker 4: they explore them. And so I think my opinion, again
- 3:50Speaker 4: having not seen it, is.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Having not seen the movie, wait until we see it,
- 3:54Speaker 2: we're going to be so opinionated.
- 3:55Speaker 4: Come back next week with a full review for you.
- 3:57Speaker 4: But a lot of people that have seen complaining are
- 3:59Speaker 4: men or people who maybe you don't have a significant
- 4:02Speaker 4: amount of experience as a female in the world where
- 4:05Speaker 4: it's real bad patriarchy. So I'm very excited to see
- 4:07Speaker 4: how they pull it apart while keeping it kid friendly
- 4:09Speaker 4: as well.
- 4:10Speaker 2: I've seen this meme. I don't know if it's a meme.
- 4:12Speaker 2: It's just like a screenshot from Twitter, I believe, and
- 4:15Speaker 2: it's from someone called technically Ron and they said, I
- 4:18Speaker 2: took one star reviews from Barbie from furious men on letterbox,
- 4:23Speaker 2: which I'm assuming is just like a social media platform
- 4:25Speaker 2: in the US, and I put them on the Barbie
- 4:28Speaker 2: poster because it makes the film seem even cooler. You're
- 4:31Speaker 2: ready to hear some of their comments. Absolutely an alienating,
- 4:34Speaker 2: dangerous and perversive film that is a lot I want
- 4:38Speaker 2: to see it.
- 4:39Speaker 4: It was signed off on by a children's toy company.
- 4:41Speaker 4: How bad can it be?
- 4:43Speaker 2: I don't know. This one says the feminist agenda will
- 4:45Speaker 2: kill us all.
- 4:46Speaker 4: My god.
- 4:48Speaker 2: The next one, are you ready? Yeah, they won't be
- 4:50Speaker 2: happy until we're all gay.
- 4:53Speaker 4: It's the people just see this is the thing that
- 4:55Speaker 4: makes me really mad.
- 4:57Speaker 2: And my favorite, are you ready? It's a pink acid
- 5:00Speaker 2: trip that feels a lot like being slapped by lots
- 5:02Speaker 2: of confusingly attractive people.
- 5:05Speaker 4: I gotta love that.
- 5:06Speaker 2: I just want to see the movie even more now.
- 5:08Speaker 2: But that's apparently what some mediocre, middle aged white men
- 5:10Speaker 2: had to say about the Barbie film. And you know
- 5:12Speaker 2: what you're selling it to me, guys, You are absolutely
- 5:15Speaker 2: selling it to me.
- 5:16Speaker 4: I didn't need that one hundred and forty five million dollars.
- 5:18Speaker 4: I don't need it because you're doing it on the
- 5:19Speaker 4: internet for free, exactly.
- 5:21Speaker 2: And I just love how people are just not having it.
- 5:24Speaker 2: You know how sometimes people slam a movie and you're like, oh,
- 5:27Speaker 2: I don't know if I'll see that now everyone's going
- 5:30Speaker 2: on every negative review, I'm like, I needed to see
- 5:32Speaker 2: it more every positive review, I'm like, yes, queen, get it.
- 5:36Speaker 4: There's no looking.
- 5:36Speaker 2: You can't tell me that I don't want to see
- 5:38Speaker 2: this movie.
- 5:39Speaker 4: You can't stay tuned for she's on the movie review.
- 5:42Speaker 4: We'll come back to you next week.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Yeah, and we might have a real opinion about the
- 5:45Speaker 2: Barbie movie. You might have noticed that we are lacking
- 5:48Speaker 2: a beck today, Dad. She has hurt her neck coincidentally
- 5:52Speaker 2: on her birthday. I don't know. We'll have to call
- 5:55Speaker 2: her out next week.
- 5:56Speaker 4: Bad calma ah, sad, A little bit of a didn't
- 6:00Speaker 4: stick to work either way.
- 6:02Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 6:03Speaker 4: We missed you back. Hope you feel better soon.
- 6:05Speaker 2: We brought you or Jess brought you in flowers.
- 6:08Speaker 4: We brought you flowers.
- 6:09Speaker 2: I mean I probably paid for them, but you remember
- 6:11Speaker 2: to pick them up Yeah, that's how this relationship works.
- 6:13Speaker 4: Let's fail over it.
- 6:14Speaker 2: I really appreciate it. But Beck is in here, and
- 6:17Speaker 2: to be honest, Jess and I could not do her
- 6:19Speaker 2: broke tips justice. So how might we dive straight into
- 6:22Speaker 2: your community wins? What have you pulled out this week?
- 6:25Speaker 2: My friend?
- 6:25Speaker 4: My first money when this week comes from Louise, who
- 6:28Speaker 4: said I wanted a book that Amazon was going to
- 6:30Speaker 4: charge me a lot of money in postage, so I
- 6:33Speaker 4: checked out the local secondhand bookstore and save myself ten dollars.
- 6:37Speaker 4: I forgot that second hand bookstores existed.
- 6:40Speaker 2: I did too it Salvos. No, Like, there are whole.
- 6:47Speaker 4: Entire stores that are just dedicated secondand bookstores. There's one
- 6:50Speaker 4: quite close to our studio. Really yeah, and they literally
- 6:53Speaker 4: un just.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Full of She's on the Money books. Do you remember
- 6:57Speaker 2: the time someone sent us a picture of one of
- 6:59Speaker 2: our she on the Money tote bags?
- 7:01Speaker 4: Those sto bags are so good.
- 7:03Speaker 2: They sent us a picture of a tote bag from
- 7:05Speaker 2: She's on the Money in Salvos, and you know what
- 7:07Speaker 2: I was like, that's what I paid for it.
- 7:09Speaker 4: Yep, money win for someone out there. It's an excellent
- 7:12Speaker 4: tote bag. But yeah, good reminder to anyone who wants
- 7:14Speaker 4: to read a book secondhand bookstores. So good. My next
- 7:17Speaker 4: money win is from Amy, who said I finished the
- 7:19Speaker 4: investing shoes in the Money podcast episodes and have started investing.
- 7:23Speaker 4: Has cleared fifty dollars a week and other irregular payments
- 7:27Speaker 4: heaps as or when I can not much to start with,
- 7:30Speaker 4: but as a now single mum of five who took
- 7:33Speaker 4: a long time off work to look after my babies
- 7:35Speaker 4: when I was partnered, I'm excited to start investing for
- 7:38Speaker 4: my retirement.
- 7:39Speaker 2: What single mum of five investing fifty bucks a week huge?
- 7:44Speaker 2: I can't.
- 7:45Speaker 4: Amy, You're totally wrong. That's a huge amount.
- 7:46Speaker 2: I want to hear everybody else's excuses. Jessica, We're very
- 7:50Speaker 2: proud of you. I love this.
- 7:51Speaker 4: Next, I've got a money win from Melinda, who said
- 7:54Speaker 4: I wanted to buy new inserts for my ugs, and
- 7:57Speaker 4: a friend had some sheep skin and cut them for
- 7:59Speaker 4: me for free. And I included this so niche, and.
- 8:02Speaker 2: It's so niche. I didn't even know you could buy
- 8:04Speaker 2: inserts for us.
- 8:05Speaker 4: I was just gonna say it picked that one because
- 8:07Speaker 4: it has literally never occurred to me that you could
- 8:10Speaker 4: replace the inside of fluffy, because you know, fluffy slippers
- 8:12Speaker 4: ugs get a bit feral. They get real nasty after
- 8:16Speaker 4: a while, and then you go, oh, well, am I
- 8:18Speaker 4: going to throw them out because my feet?
- 8:20Speaker 2: No, I'm going to continue to wear them for the
- 8:22Speaker 2: next ten years.
- 8:23Speaker 4: Well no telling them no. So Melinda's Melinda's on the money,
- 8:28Speaker 4: Melinda place the lining.
- 8:30Speaker 2: Yes that I have questions. My little ADHD brain's like, well,
- 8:33Speaker 2: how did that come up in conversation with your friend?
- 8:35Speaker 2: Were you like, oh, what are you doing after this
- 8:37Speaker 2: coffee that we're having? Oh, I'm going shopping for ug inserts,
- 8:40Speaker 2: Oh babe, don't worry. I happen to have a supply
- 8:42Speaker 2: of sheepskin in my wardrobe. Like where did that come from?
- 8:45Speaker 4: I mean, if it works, it works right.
- 8:47Speaker 2: I don't want no one's arguing that one away for later?
- 8:49Speaker 4: What else have you got next? I have money win
- 8:51Speaker 4: from Kendall simple, but I kind of love it. Money
- 8:54Speaker 4: win my coals Click and collect substituted six hundred grams
- 8:57Speaker 4: of chicken breasts, which is what I ordered for one
- 8:59Speaker 4: point four killer of chicken instead got a lot of chicken.
- 9:04Speaker 4: Do you tick substitute? Do you know how there's a
- 9:06Speaker 4: button with do you just it's such a gamble because
- 9:09Speaker 4: sometimes it's like this and you get pretty much what
- 9:11Speaker 4: you wanted, but maybe a little better. And I remember
- 9:14Speaker 4: once I ordered Pepsi Max because Max curly. Do you
- 9:18Speaker 4: know what they gave me sprite?
- 9:20Speaker 2: Absolutely absolutely not. We had that the other day actually,
- 9:25Speaker 2: So one of my favorite ice creams is this like
- 9:28Speaker 2: coconut based vanilla ice cream, and there's not a lot
- 9:31Speaker 2: of substitute, but on my app it automatically ticks substitute.
- 9:35Speaker 2: And the plan was to have it with apple crumble because,
- 9:38Speaker 2: as you guys know, apple crumble is the og dessert.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Won't hear about it from anywhere else. So want my
- 9:44Speaker 2: vanilla ice cream with apple crumble? And they guess what
- 9:47Speaker 2: they did? They substituted it same brand, technically still plant based,
- 9:52Speaker 2: but choc mint ice cream is not good with a crumble.
- 9:56Speaker 2: So thanks for thinking of me and not giving me
- 10:00Speaker 2: an ice cream I won't eat. But also I did
- 10:02Speaker 2: have to take myself to the shops.
- 10:04Speaker 4: It's so funny because sometimes they're bang on it and
- 10:07Speaker 4: sometimes you're like, where's your brain? Not even close, where's
- 10:10Speaker 4: your brain?
- 10:10Speaker 2: She wanted vanilla and you gave her shock mint a.
- 10:13Speaker 4: Bit of a fun gamble.
- 10:15Speaker 2: Why not.
- 10:16Speaker 4: My next money men comes from Christy who said I
- 10:18Speaker 4: got my weekly Marley Spoon box and they have given
- 10:20Speaker 4: me not one, but two freebies.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Yes they do that all the time.
- 10:24Speaker 4: One ready made sticky date pudding and one black rice
- 10:27Speaker 4: ready mix.
- 10:28Speaker 2: Who doesn't have a free.
- 10:29Speaker 4: To that it absolute me.
- 10:31Speaker 2: I did not get massive complaint to Marley Spoon. I
- 10:35Speaker 2: didn't get free sticky date puddy. Oh and I work
- 10:37Speaker 2: for you. You're not the favorite. I see how it is,
- 10:41Speaker 2: but we will pop Victoria's code in the Marley Spoons
- 10:45Speaker 2: literally the best thing in the entire world. And I
- 10:47Speaker 2: am working with them at the moment as like Amali ambassador,
- 10:50Speaker 2: which is like my favorite job ever. But it's funny
- 10:53Speaker 2: because people are like, oh, do you just eat their
- 10:55Speaker 2: food because you know they're working with you. Mike Sis,
- 10:58Speaker 2: I've been posting on Instagram about Mars Spoons is like
- 11:00Speaker 2: twenty fifteen. I think they owe it to me now
- 11:03Speaker 2: at this point, like I've worked for this ambassadorship.
- 11:06Speaker 4: Well, like just put the girl on the rostashsh she's getting.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Really annoying, like she thinks she works here. You know
- 11:13Speaker 2: that person that's so obsessed with one brand. They're like,
- 11:16Speaker 2: only wear that brand. That's me with.
- 11:17Speaker 4: Food amazing Maley. We love it. We love Maley. Big
- 11:21Speaker 4: fans here. And then lastly, I have moneyment from Julia,
- 11:24Speaker 4: who said, although I needed the money from my freshly
- 11:27Speaker 4: opened emergency fund for a small food shop and it's
- 11:29Speaker 4: now back down to zero dollars, it was such a
- 11:32Speaker 4: relief to have that money. I needed a side, and
- 11:34Speaker 4: I'm so proud that it was taken for an essential
- 11:37Speaker 4: and not a want.
- 11:38Speaker 2: I love it. I love it, Julia. That's such a
- 11:41Speaker 2: good habit, such a good habit, and it's just going
- 11:44Speaker 2: to grow from here on in because in another couple
- 11:46Speaker 2: of weeks you'll put that money back and then you
- 11:48Speaker 2: won't need it in the same way that you needed
- 11:50Speaker 2: it this time.
- 11:51Speaker 4: And I'm just built up.
- 11:52Speaker 2: I love it so much. All right, Jess, let's go
- 11:53Speaker 2: to a really quick break, because on the flip side,
- 11:55Speaker 2: I think we're going to get into the juicy conversation
- 11:58Speaker 2: of what's salary packaging actually means, And we're also going
- 12:01Speaker 2: to be unpacking a question that you slid into our
- 12:03Speaker 2: DMS about and we're going to be talking about whether
- 12:05Speaker 2: it's okay, or not to take a step back in
- 12:07Speaker 2: your career to support your partner's goals. So don't go anywhere.
- 12:16Speaker 4: Welcome back, everybody. Let's take a listen to this week's
- 12:19Speaker 4: money dilemma.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Hi, there, have you got a money dilemma you just
- 12:24Speaker 2: can't solve that. She's on the Money Team is here
- 12:26Speaker 2: to help. Every week we tackle your dilemmas, both big
- 12:30Speaker 2: and small, to answer your most burning money, career and
- 12:32Speaker 2: life questions. To get involved, simply head to our website
- 12:36Speaker 2: and leave us a short voice recording and you might
- 12:38Speaker 2: just find yourself on the show. Now, let's take a
- 12:40Speaker 2: listen to this week's money dilemma.
- 12:45Speaker 5: Hey, She's on the Money Team. Over the last few years,
- 12:48Speaker 5: I've been working in a role that was casual, and
- 12:50Speaker 5: now I've just been employed in a full time role
- 12:53Speaker 5: that pays an eighty five thousand dollars salary plus super
- 12:56Speaker 5: plus a work vehicle. I hear my coworkers talk a
- 12:59Speaker 5: lot about sal packaging, and I've got no idea what
- 13:01Speaker 5: this means. Can you break it down and explain what
- 13:04Speaker 5: it means and how it benefits employees? Love the show
- 13:07Speaker 5: and thanks for answering.
- 13:08Speaker 4: Hello. My name is Victoria Devine and I'm gonna say,
- 13:11Speaker 4: go listen to the episode that we did on salary Packaging.
- 13:14Speaker 4: I just want to I'm not obviously victory to fine
- 13:16Speaker 4: Case candelp. It's Jess. Yeah. Hello, I would just like
- 13:18Speaker 4: to plug our archive because this podcast has been around
- 13:22Speaker 4: for five years now. She's been around a while. She's
- 13:26Speaker 4: been around the block once or twice. Remember when we
- 13:27Speaker 4: thought we were all young, I mean we're still fresh,
- 13:30Speaker 4: baby faced.
- 13:31Speaker 2: However, that's my botox.
- 13:32Speaker 4: We've covered many a episode on this podcast. And did
- 13:36Speaker 4: you know you can go on Apple Podcasts or Spotify
- 13:38Speaker 4: or wherever you like to get your podcasts from. And
- 13:42Speaker 4: if you go to the page if She's on the Money,
- 13:44Speaker 4: you can actually search keywords.
- 13:46Speaker 2: Yeah, like you can type in salary packaging and then
- 13:48Speaker 2: what would happen, Jess?
- 13:49Speaker 4: You would see an episode from the seventh of April
- 13:51Speaker 4: twenty twenty one. What's it called nice in brackets? Salary package?
- 13:57Speaker 2: Ay? I feel like you might have had something to
- 13:59Speaker 2: do with.
- 13:59Speaker 4: That excellent name. But do you want to give us
- 14:02Speaker 4: a little quick, cheeky rundown just to make it easy
- 14:05Speaker 4: for everyone?
- 14:05Speaker 2: Lit? I do, and I think it's a really important
- 14:07Speaker 2: thing to talk about, especially when you start to get
- 14:10Speaker 2: to those higher salary bands where you're like, oh, like
- 14:13Speaker 2: tax is starting to bite me in the bottom a
- 14:16Speaker 2: little bit, because tax is a lot, and salary packaging
- 14:20Speaker 2: is essentially a way that you can sort of bring
- 14:23Speaker 2: down your taxable income in a way. So salary packaging
- 14:27Speaker 2: is when your employer packages your salary into income and benefits.
- 14:32Speaker 2: And that's what salary packaging is known as. And you
- 14:35Speaker 2: can do heaps of different things here. So essentially, salary
- 14:38Speaker 2: packaging is when you were arranged to receive less income tax.
- 14:41Speaker 2: So let's just use you as an example, Jess, I
- 14:44Speaker 2: would pay you less, but you would get a benefit
- 14:47Speaker 2: that is paid for by my company. So instead of
- 14:52Speaker 2: the tax rate applying to you, which you know would
- 14:56Speaker 2: probably be thirty two point five cents in, every single
- 14:59Speaker 2: dollar gets packaged up and the benefit comes out of
- 15:02Speaker 2: your pre tax salary, which is kind of sexy because
- 15:05Speaker 2: you're thirty two point five percent better off in this
- 15:07Speaker 2: particular circumstance. So you could package up things like a car,
- 15:12Speaker 2: or you could do your mobile phone, or you could
- 15:14Speaker 2: do you know, a heap of different things that are
- 15:17Speaker 2: related to your job or are something that might benefit you.
- 15:21Speaker 2: So I know that in a lot of circumstances, people
- 15:25Speaker 2: want a salary package they rent, which is possible. That's
- 15:28Speaker 2: kind of sexy, thirty two point five percent better off.
- 15:31Speaker 2: I'm going to try that. People might want a salary
- 15:34Speaker 2: sacrifice childcare, or you might actually want to do this
- 15:37Speaker 2: for supranuation. Obviously, the superannuation system is a little bit different,
- 15:41Speaker 2: but it's still salary packaging. So the important thing is
- 15:44Speaker 2: that most employers will offer salary sacrifice to super, but
- 15:49Speaker 2: most will actually restrict the benefits of salary packaging in
- 15:53Speaker 2: general because it is a lot of admin like it's
- 15:56Speaker 2: quite hard to keep track of as a small business,
- 15:58Speaker 2: so it's not in their best in try to do that.
- 16:00Speaker 2: So salary packaging can fall into three different categories. So
- 16:04Speaker 2: we've got fringe benefits, we've got exempt benefits, and supranuation.
- 16:08Speaker 2: So we discussed supranuation already. That's where you sacrifice some
- 16:11Speaker 2: of your pre tax income to supranuation to put it
- 16:15Speaker 2: away for your future retirement. There is a different tax
- 16:18Speaker 2: system inside super which is going to tax that contribution
- 16:22Speaker 2: at fifteen cents in the dollar. But when you are
- 16:26Speaker 2: at a normal salary band, like thirty two point five
- 16:29Speaker 2: cents in every dollar. You're clearly more than fifteen percent
- 16:32Speaker 2: better off. So that's kind of sexy, right, love it.
- 16:35Speaker 2: The other one is fringe benefits. So fringe benefits can
- 16:39Speaker 2: include things like salary sacrificing for a car, could be
- 16:42Speaker 2: health insurance, it could be loans usually for a car,
- 16:46Speaker 2: school fees, childcare fees, or other personal expenses, and your
- 16:50Speaker 2: employer is going to pay what's called FBT or fringe
- 16:54Speaker 2: benefit tax on these benefits. That is a completely different
- 16:58Speaker 2: set of benefits compared to exempt benefits. So an exempt
- 17:02Speaker 2: benefit to go through that really quickly is things like
- 17:05Speaker 2: portable electronic devices like phones and laptops, computer software, protective clothing,
- 17:10Speaker 2: tools of the trade, and your employer doesn't have to
- 17:13Speaker 2: pay fringe benefit tax on that. And that's because it's
- 17:16Speaker 2: usually related to your employment. And so there's lots of
- 17:20Speaker 2: different ways of doing this, and I mean, I'm getting
- 17:22Speaker 2: pretty into it. Go listen to the episode. We cover
- 17:25Speaker 2: all of it. And as much as it was done
- 17:27Speaker 2: a couple of years ago, FBT and salary packaging hasn't
- 17:30Speaker 2: changed significantly. I just think the most important thing to
- 17:33Speaker 2: think about is it's not free money. I know that
- 17:37Speaker 2: it sounds really sexy, and if you're going to get
- 17:39Speaker 2: a car, of course, if salary packaging is available, that's
- 17:43Speaker 2: something you should consider. However, I do think a lot
- 17:46Speaker 2: of people use their salary packaging kind of just as
- 17:49Speaker 2: as an excuse to overspend in areas that they wouldn't
- 17:53Speaker 2: have if the money was in their bank account. So like,
- 17:55Speaker 2: if you're salary packaging food and entertainment, that food and
- 17:59Speaker 2: entertain allowance actually can't be spent on groceries. It actually
- 18:03Speaker 2: has to be spent on dining out. Yeah, and therefore
- 18:06Speaker 2: you're maybe dining out a lot more than what you
- 18:08Speaker 2: would have dined out had that money been in your
- 18:10Speaker 2: account and been allocated to another goal or expense. So
- 18:14Speaker 2: I think it's just so important to think about, well,
- 18:16Speaker 2: how is this going to serve me? Because I mean,
- 18:18Speaker 2: if you are needing to buy a new family car,
- 18:21Speaker 2: well then maybe that is a good idea to save
- 18:24Speaker 2: some tax and you know, put yourself in the best
- 18:26Speaker 2: possible position. However, we've got to make sure that we're
- 18:29Speaker 2: not then overspending on the car just because you go,
- 18:32Speaker 2: oh but it's much cheaper now.
- 18:34Speaker 4: Yeah, you feel like you've got all this extra money
- 18:36Speaker 4: when it's still money that.
- 18:37Speaker 2: No, we should be making the most of it. And
- 18:39Speaker 2: I think the other thing when it comes to salary
- 18:42Speaker 2: packaging is how committed you are to your employer. I
- 18:45Speaker 2: know that sounds really negative, but like Jess, if you
- 18:48Speaker 2: weren't planning on sticking around, that's a really big I
- 18:51Speaker 2: guess salary responsibility that you have with me that you
- 18:55Speaker 2: know a new employer might not immediately pick up on
- 18:59Speaker 2: and needs to be taken into consideration. So if you're
- 19:01Speaker 2: doing something like an ovated lease, which again is different
- 19:04Speaker 2: but often falls into the same conversation bucket, that might
- 19:08Speaker 2: mean that you have to get rid of your car
- 19:09Speaker 2: when you get a new job, and if you're not
- 19:11Speaker 2: planning on staying with that employee long term, or maybe
- 19:14Speaker 2: let's rethink how that might work structurally. So I think
- 19:17Speaker 2: there's a lot to consider. But essentially, salary packaging is
- 19:20Speaker 2: where you sacrifice part of your salary to reduce your
- 19:24Speaker 2: tax and that kind of sounds sexy if used in
- 19:28Speaker 2: the best possible way, But as I said, a lot
- 19:31Speaker 2: of people use it in a way that kind of
- 19:34Speaker 2: gives them permission to overspend in a way that they
- 19:36Speaker 2: wouldn't have if I had put that cash in front
- 19:38Speaker 2: of you, Jess, we.
- 19:39Speaker 4: Do not support that here.
- 19:40Speaker 2: No, I think it's about making the most of it. Like,
- 19:42Speaker 2: if you've got access to salary packaging, my friend, get
- 19:45Speaker 2: it quan exciting, especially if that is in your budget.
- 19:48Speaker 2: Like if you've gone and done your ses on the
- 19:50Speaker 2: money budget and casually plan and you know that each
- 19:52Speaker 2: and every single month you spend X on dining out, well,
- 19:56Speaker 2: why not pull that budget straight into salary packaging so
- 19:59Speaker 2: it can make sense if you can do the same
- 20:01Speaker 2: for rent, talk to your employer about it. These are
- 20:04Speaker 2: things that could potentially put you in a better financial position.
- 20:08Speaker 2: I just don't want to see the system not abused.
- 20:10Speaker 2: But you know what I mean, I just don't want
- 20:12Speaker 2: people taking it and going, oh, it's free money because
- 20:15Speaker 2: it's tax free. I feel like the second you say
- 20:17Speaker 2: tax free or tax refund, people assume that they didn't
- 20:20Speaker 2: work for that money, and that's not the case.
- 20:22Speaker 4: Oh that's super interesting. And definitely go back and listen
- 20:24Speaker 4: to that episode that you guys did a little while ago,
- 20:26Speaker 4: because I feel like it got into the nitty gritty
- 20:29Speaker 4: of it, because there is a lot to unpack there,
- 20:31Speaker 4: but not to scooch it along.
- 20:33Speaker 2: I'm wanting to scooch it along because if anyone loves
- 20:36Speaker 2: the drummer, it's msscrich absolutely.
- 20:38Speaker 4: And I feel like this week's question is such a
- 20:39Speaker 4: good one.
- 20:40Speaker 2: All right, all right, so this week's community dilemma, let's go.
- 20:43Speaker 2: This week, we got a message and it went like this,
- 20:46Speaker 2: Hey girl, is a bit of a sticky one. My
- 20:48Speaker 2: partner has been offered a really amazing opportunity to partly
- 20:52Speaker 2: own a business into state, which would really set us
- 20:55Speaker 2: up financially. But it's in a remote town. I currently
- 20:58Speaker 2: work as a makeup artist and I have a really
- 21:00Speaker 2: good client base where I am, so I'm having a
- 21:02Speaker 2: hard time taking steps back in my career for him,
- 21:06Speaker 2: even though it would be a great financial opportunity. I'm
- 21:10Speaker 2: just not sure how should I approach this.
- 21:13Speaker 4: I feel people are going to have very different opinions
- 21:16Speaker 4: on this, and it's really hard because I think you
- 21:20Speaker 4: look at it and you go, Okay, when you're in
- 21:22Speaker 4: a partnership with somebody, you obviously hope for their success,
- 21:25Speaker 4: You want them to do well, you want them to thrive.
- 21:27Speaker 4: You want to do whatever you can to support that.
- 21:29Speaker 4: But it's a big ask of anybody to pick up
- 21:33Speaker 4: their life and move. And I would say the same
- 21:35Speaker 4: if it was the other way around, if she had
- 21:37Speaker 4: the opportunity and she was asking a partner to move.
- 21:39Speaker 4: I think, regardless, it's a lot to leave behind. Firstly,
- 21:43Speaker 4: her career. It sounds like her existing client base, all
- 21:46Speaker 4: of the work that she's done to maybe build up
- 21:47Speaker 4: her personal brand in the area, and the connections that
- 21:50Speaker 4: she's got. If she's moving somewhere remote, I'm imagining perhaps
- 21:54Speaker 4: there may not be as many opportunities to do that
- 21:56Speaker 4: kind of work, depending on just how big or small
- 21:59Speaker 4: the town is. And then you're also moving away from
- 22:01Speaker 4: your support network, your friends, your family, your favorite coffee shop.
- 22:05Speaker 2: That's important.
- 22:06Speaker 4: It's very important. And I just feel like it's I
- 22:10Speaker 4: can understand why she's a little bit unsure, but then
- 22:15Speaker 4: I can also understand how that might make her feel
- 22:17Speaker 4: guilty because she feels like, oh, well, I'm not supporting
- 22:20Speaker 4: them in the way that I'm short or in the
- 22:22Speaker 4: way that I would want to be supported. So it
- 22:23Speaker 4: is it is really a sticky one, isn't it.
- 22:25Speaker 2: I find it really hard because I think in theory,
- 22:29Speaker 2: you go, oh, my gosh, let's support our partner and
- 22:33Speaker 2: if Steve needed to do anything for his career, I
- 22:36Speaker 2: would try my hardest to make sure that he was
- 22:38Speaker 2: as well supported as possible. However, it's well, what does
- 22:43Speaker 2: day to day look like? You're moving to a remote location.
- 22:47Speaker 2: What's the expectation of you? So are you just staying
- 22:51Speaker 2: at home while he goes and makes heaps of money
- 22:53Speaker 2: And that's really good, But you don't have a social life,
- 22:56Speaker 2: you don't have a job that's probably going to lead
- 22:59Speaker 2: to you you feeling pretty flat. Are you expected to
- 23:02Speaker 2: go and get a completely different career because unfortunately, you know,
- 23:06Speaker 2: let's pretend you're moving to KARTHA makeup artist is probably
- 23:10Speaker 2: not needed up near the mines, right, It's not something
- 23:13Speaker 2: that there is a lot of demand for. And that's
- 23:15Speaker 2: so fine, But would there be the expectation that you
- 23:18Speaker 2: get a job, you know, at the local shops. If so,
- 23:22Speaker 2: how is that going to nor issue? Are you going
- 23:24Speaker 2: to feel empowered and engaged in the same way that
- 23:26Speaker 2: you are feeling that way in your current job? And
- 23:29Speaker 2: I think that there's just a lot to take into consideration.
- 23:32Speaker 2: And I think the tone of this message really beautiful,
- 23:36Speaker 2: Like I love that you want to support your partner.
- 23:39Speaker 2: I really really do. But when we talk about you know,
- 23:42Speaker 2: there's this opportunity to partly own a business interstate stunning,
- 23:47Speaker 2: but it was the financial driver, Like, is there the
- 23:50Speaker 2: opportunity for him to maybe start a bit earlier on,
- 23:53Speaker 2: maybe not step into a pre established business, but if
- 23:56Speaker 2: he's super passionate about that, could he do that somewhere else.
- 24:00Speaker 2: As much as this is a money podcast, money isn't
- 24:03Speaker 2: absolutely everything. We need to find that balance of well,
- 24:06Speaker 2: what's going to work for us? Like if you took
- 24:09Speaker 2: me out of the city, I wouldn't have a purpose.
- 24:12Speaker 2: I'd be very upset, not at my partner. I just
- 24:15Speaker 2: wouldn't have a lot to do. So I feel like
- 24:18Speaker 2: it's really important to think about, well, what does your
- 24:20Speaker 2: current lifestyle look like? You're right, Jess, what if your
- 24:23Speaker 2: lifestyle involves getting up every single morning going for coffee
- 24:27Speaker 2: and you know, maybe you and your partner have worked
- 24:28Speaker 2: out that that's okay to have that level of compromise,
- 24:32Speaker 2: But what level of compromise are you willing to take
- 24:34Speaker 2: on in order for them to thrive? And if that's
- 24:39Speaker 2: the case, do you both need to go Yeah, Like
- 24:42Speaker 2: I am a very big believer in, you know, just
- 24:46Speaker 2: making things work and not everything is super easy always.
- 24:49Speaker 2: But maybe you kind of do a five FO thing
- 24:51Speaker 2: where you are a makeup artist and you only have
- 24:54Speaker 2: set days that you might work and you go and
- 24:57Speaker 2: do the remote stuff with your partner for a week
- 24:59Speaker 2: on and off. Like, I don't know how that could work, Yeah,
- 25:02Speaker 2: but there might be a way of still keeping a
- 25:04Speaker 2: foot in the door and staying engaged in your current
- 25:07Speaker 2: career while still supporting your partner to maybe do this
- 25:11Speaker 2: because who knows if it's going to work out. What
- 25:13Speaker 2: if he gets there and he's like, this is the
- 25:15Speaker 2: worst thing I've ever done.
- 25:16Speaker 4: Yeah, and it's kind of how do you feel about them?
- 25:21Speaker 4: Like outside of his opportunity, would you be excited about
- 25:24Speaker 4: the move? I feel like that's how I would look
- 25:26Speaker 4: at it. Is if he wasn't going to get heaps
- 25:27Speaker 4: of money from this new job in this new state
- 25:30Speaker 4: and he said, hey, why don't we move to Karfa
- 25:33Speaker 4: or wherever it is.
- 25:34Speaker 2: I fix like somewhere that I knew were super remote.
- 25:37Speaker 4: I literally never heard of it. So well done, You're.
- 25:38Speaker 2: Welco there you go. It's not in Perth, it's in
- 25:42Speaker 2: Western Australia. You know, would you be excited about the
- 25:45Speaker 2: opportunity to move there?
- 25:46Speaker 4: Would you feel like you have different options or plans
- 25:49Speaker 4: or routes that you could take if you're there? And
- 25:52Speaker 4: if not, then, as you said, like what compromises can
- 25:55Speaker 4: you make around that? It's a real pickle because I
- 25:59Speaker 4: think you know, you want to do everything you can
- 26:01Speaker 4: for the person that you love, and I totally understand
- 26:03Speaker 4: and respect that. But at this on the flip side
- 26:06Speaker 4: of that, I guess if he loves and respects you,
- 26:07Speaker 4: he also maybe he.
- 26:09Speaker 2: Should take that into consideration too, a way, the pros
- 26:12Speaker 2: and the concept.
- 26:13Speaker 4: Yeah, see it sounds like you have to have a
- 26:14Speaker 4: big conversation. Obviously, we don't have a huge amount of
- 26:17Speaker 4: information in this little note that we got telling us
- 26:20Speaker 4: all of the context. But I kind of say, both sides,
- 26:23Speaker 4: I don't I don't fully know where I sit.
- 26:25Speaker 2: Have you ever had this hypothetical conversation with your partner,
- 26:29Speaker 2: like what if you wanted to move to London?
- 26:31Speaker 4: Or is that just me?
- 26:32Speaker 2: Nah who just like makes up really random situations in
- 26:36Speaker 2: my head? Still love me? If I'm an egg.
- 26:40Speaker 4: If I was a worm, would you treat me the same,
- 26:42Speaker 4: would you still think I'm pretty that's me?
- 26:44Speaker 2: But have you not spoken to your partner about like
- 26:47Speaker 2: moving overseas? Not really really nice?
- 26:50Speaker 4: But for us, it's not really something that's on either
- 26:52Speaker 4: of our radars. I think we're both really comfortable in
- 26:54Speaker 4: our careers how they're progressing right now where we are. Yeah,
- 26:58Speaker 4: maybe that's on us. Maybe that's a conversation we should
- 27:00Speaker 4: have had and we haven't.
- 27:01Speaker 2: Ah, So I have had that conversation and it was
- 27:04Speaker 2: instigated by getting pets.
- 27:06Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 27:06Speaker 2: So, like I already had a cat, and I am
- 27:08Speaker 2: definitely a homebody. Like I have lived overseas for a
- 27:12Speaker 2: short period of time but didn't love it because I'm
- 27:16Speaker 2: such a homebody. Wanted to be in my own space
- 27:18Speaker 2: and like I need to be close to my friends
- 27:20Speaker 2: and my family, Like I just I'm gonna be boring Jess. So,
- 27:24Speaker 2: I remember when my partner and I were talking about
- 27:26Speaker 2: getting another cat. I was like, do you want to
- 27:28Speaker 2: move to London? He was like wait what? I was like,
- 27:30Speaker 2: do you want to move to London?
- 27:31Speaker 4: Like?
- 27:32Speaker 2: And he was like, no, where do you put London from?
- 27:35Speaker 2: I don't know. I think everybody who moves overseas is
- 27:40Speaker 2: going to live in London.
- 27:41Speaker 4: You know what now that you say that, a lot
- 27:42Speaker 4: of people have I.
- 27:43Speaker 2: Feel like, if you're going to go work overseas, like
- 27:46Speaker 2: you're not going on a holiday, it's easy londyar And yeah,
- 27:49Speaker 2: I feel like anyway, that's me stereotyping. But I remember
- 27:53Speaker 2: going would you ever move to London? And he was
- 27:55Speaker 2: like no? And I was like, would you move to Singapore?
- 27:57Speaker 4: No?
- 27:58Speaker 2: Would you move to Sydney? And he's like, only if
- 28:01Speaker 2: there was a really good career opportunity or you got
- 28:03Speaker 2: a really good career opportunity.
- 28:04Speaker 4: And I was like who, No good answer.
- 28:07Speaker 2: So I think it was a good conversation to have
- 28:10Speaker 2: because you know, obviously pets came into it, and I
- 28:13Speaker 2: can't like I'm not the type of person that's like,
- 28:15Speaker 2: oh well, if the opportunity came up, I'd get rid
- 28:17Speaker 2: of my pets.
- 28:18Speaker 4: I'd say bring it back around. What was the pet thing?
- 28:20Speaker 1: Is that?
- 28:20Speaker 4: Oh, if we move to London, what do we do
- 28:21Speaker 4: with the end? Yeah?
- 28:22Speaker 2: Because like I had Bailey, so I had my own
- 28:25Speaker 2: cat and I am a lot in a relationship. But
- 28:29Speaker 2: when we moved in together, I said, Bailey is my cat.
- 28:32Speaker 2: I've had him for five years or whatever it is.
- 28:34Speaker 2: Before we got together. If we break up for any reason,
- 28:37Speaker 2: that's my cat. That's not your responsibility, like one hundred
- 28:40Speaker 2: percent mine. But when we got pets together, we got Henry,
- 28:44Speaker 2: our other cat. I was like, hold up, whose responsibility
- 28:47Speaker 2: is this? Yeah, like, I'm I think just a financial
- 28:51Speaker 2: ex financial planner at heart. So I was like, well,
- 28:54Speaker 2: who's financial responsibility will this speak? Are you going to
- 28:57Speaker 2: take the cat? Am I going to take the cat?
- 28:59Speaker 2: And like, we both people, So he was like, well
- 29:01Speaker 2: you don't get both of them. I was like, yes,
- 29:03Speaker 2: but are you going to separate them?
- 29:04Speaker 4: Cruel?
- 29:05Speaker 2: I know right anyway, So we had all of this
- 29:07Speaker 2: conversation and there was that discussion of would you move
- 29:11Speaker 2: for an amazing opportunity and we both kind of said, look,
- 29:15Speaker 2: it would have to be a life changing opportunity to
- 29:18Speaker 2: even consider it, because I feel like getting pets and
- 29:21Speaker 2: talking about home ownership is really putting roots down in
- 29:24Speaker 2: a way that we hadn't before. But I think if
- 29:27Speaker 2: we had been twenty two and didn't have pets, maybe
- 29:31Speaker 2: we would have jumped at it. So I think it's
- 29:33Speaker 2: just such a sticky situation because it's going to be
- 29:35Speaker 2: different for absolutely everybody.
- 29:37Speaker 4: I completely agree. What did everybody else kind of think?
- 29:39Speaker 4: Because we're both fence sitting right now, which is very
- 29:41Speaker 4: unlike us.
- 29:42Speaker 2: I feel like I want to know way more about
- 29:44Speaker 2: your relationship. And I feel a little bit apprehensive because
- 29:47Speaker 2: you've said remote location and you've said you're a makeup artist,
- 29:50Speaker 2: which I feel like is something that is in lower
- 29:53Speaker 2: demand in remote locations. And I just go, if re
- 29:56Speaker 2: makeup artists, I know, super passionate son, you imagine taking
- 30:00Speaker 2: like our friend Hillary out of the makeup world, no
- 30:04Speaker 2: right at all. She'd just be so flat, like that's
- 30:07Speaker 2: her entire So I just feel like you're so passionate
- 30:10Speaker 2: about what you do that maybe you need the passion anyway.
- 30:13Speaker 2: So someone said, my husband has just taken a step
- 30:15Speaker 2: back to help my career, soor I would do the
- 30:17Speaker 2: same thing for him. Someone said, you really need to
- 30:20Speaker 2: elaborate on the word partner for example, boyfriend or husband.
- 30:24Speaker 2: I don't think so.
- 30:25Speaker 4: I think it's a bit old school.
- 30:27Speaker 2: I agree, what if.
- 30:28Speaker 4: They don't get married, my sister in law, why do
- 30:30Speaker 4: you have to get married together forever? They have two kids,
- 30:32Speaker 4: they're not married, they have no plans to be married.
- 30:34Speaker 2: Yeah, amen. I don't think that it matters how you
- 30:36Speaker 2: define it. I think it matters whether you define your
- 30:39Speaker 2: relationship as ongoing or not.
- 30:41Speaker 1: Though.
- 30:42Speaker 2: Yeah, so like, is this just like? I think the
- 30:44Speaker 2: question maybe is is this just like a boyfriend thing,
- 30:47Speaker 2: like someone you're just seeing versus like a potential life Yeah,
- 30:50Speaker 2: but I'm also cut and dry. Don't live with someone
- 30:52Speaker 2: you don't plan on marrying, or like not marrying, but
- 30:55Speaker 2: don't plan on staying with Yeah, Like, otherwise you're wasting
- 30:57Speaker 2: your time and you're wasting theirs by AHD White, Black
- 31:01Speaker 2: and White. Someone else said, what are your current goals
- 31:04Speaker 2: and values? Would this move support this?
- 31:06Speaker 4: Great classic VD answer?
- 31:08Speaker 2: Someone said, you need to talk to your partner about it,
- 31:10Speaker 2: thanks rastus. Someone else said, trial long distance for a
- 31:14Speaker 2: little bit and see if he actually likes it. If
- 31:16Speaker 2: he does, then revisit the conversation.
- 31:18Speaker 4: That's a good idea. I like that.
- 31:20Speaker 2: Someone said, oh man, this one needs a million percent
- 31:23Speaker 2: more information.
- 31:24Speaker 4: Agreed.
- 31:24Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 31:25Speaker 2: Someone else said, does he have to move to run
- 31:28Speaker 2: the business? Can you live apart for one year to
- 31:30Speaker 2: set yourselves up? Someone else said, Northern Territory resident here,
- 31:34Speaker 2: you also need to think about all the hidden costs
- 31:37Speaker 2: of living remote and not just getting financial benefit, which
- 31:41Speaker 2: is true. Everything's more expensive living remote.
- 31:43Speaker 4: No, so might eat away at the potential larger benefits.
- 31:46Speaker 2: Yeah, someone else is on the same page as me,
- 31:48Speaker 2: and they said, could she split her weeks between the
- 31:51Speaker 2: different locations.
- 31:53Speaker 4: It's a big thing for someone to take on as
- 31:54Speaker 4: well though, like just even the mental load, but also financially.
- 31:59Speaker 2: What now you have two houses?
- 32:00Speaker 4: Yeah, flights every couple weeks or every month.
- 32:04Speaker 2: Someone said, can't you work out a way to do both?
- 32:07Speaker 2: Could you maybe do a fly and fly out type
- 32:09Speaker 2: of thing. So I think everyone's trying to just make
- 32:11Speaker 2: everything happen all at one time. Yeah, I get it.
- 32:13Speaker 2: Someone said, consider your happiness and career in this decision.
- 32:17Speaker 2: You worked really hard to build your current business. You
- 32:20Speaker 2: don't necessarily need to put his first. And I think
- 32:23Speaker 2: that's good. Someone else said, I'd go for it. She
- 32:26Speaker 2: could set up in the next big town over if
- 32:29Speaker 2: there is one.
- 32:30Speaker 4: And that's a good point, like you don't have to
- 32:32Speaker 4: work immediately close to home if there's if Maybe that
- 32:34Speaker 4: is a good compromise. Maybe, Oh, I'm happy to drive
- 32:37Speaker 4: an hour or half an hour because that would be
- 32:39Speaker 4: a commute for me normally if you can find somewhere
- 32:42Speaker 4: close by.
- 32:42Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 32:43Speaker 2: Someone also said I recently did it. The savings are
- 32:45Speaker 2: actually epic. Remote people love welcoming new people with skills.
- 32:50Speaker 4: That isn't clearly the opposite of I just that's why
- 32:54Speaker 4: this conversation is so hard, Yes, because it's like I
- 32:57Speaker 4: think the where and the house?
- 32:58Speaker 2: Yeah, And I think at the crack of this conversation,
- 33:01Speaker 2: what I would love to think is, regardless of what
- 33:04Speaker 2: our opinion is, my opinion now think about all of
- 33:07Speaker 2: this is I hope that you both have been able
- 33:11Speaker 2: to sit down and look at the pros and cons
- 33:13Speaker 2: for each person and have a very empathetic conversation where
- 33:17Speaker 2: your partner can put themselves in your shoes and vice versa,
- 33:21Speaker 2: because I think that sometimes in these conversations, one party
- 33:25Speaker 2: gets this epic opportunity and it's the best thing ever,
- 33:28Speaker 2: and they look at their partner and go, butes, why
- 33:30Speaker 2: don't you letting me do this? Like this is going
- 33:32Speaker 2: to change our lives without seeing that maybe there's compromise,
- 33:37Speaker 2: and every relationship has compromise in it, Like it's not
- 33:40Speaker 2: one hundred percent you and it's not one hundred percent them.
- 33:43Speaker 2: So you need to come to a resolution that works
- 33:45Speaker 2: for both of you. But the best way to do
- 33:47Speaker 2: that is to have a conversation that not necessarily looks
- 33:50Speaker 2: at what their perfect outcome is, but well, what is
- 33:53Speaker 2: the opportunity on the table? How do we look at
- 33:55Speaker 2: this pragmatically and go all right, well, what is the
- 33:58Speaker 2: benefit of doing this? What is the benefit of staying here?
- 34:00Speaker 2: What would our lives look like if we went down
- 34:02Speaker 2: this pathway versus that pathway? And I think that you
- 34:05Speaker 2: need to have that holistic conversation and try and take
- 34:09Speaker 2: your personal opinions out of it. While you have that
- 34:12Speaker 2: to then go all right, well, now, personal opinions, what
- 34:15Speaker 2: do you want to do? What are you most drawn to?
- 34:18Speaker 2: Because I would be most upset if I knew that
- 34:21Speaker 2: they were just driving it because they really wanted to
- 34:23Speaker 2: do it, but hadn't really thought about your happiness.
- 34:25Speaker 4: Yeah, approaching with empathy and kindness and a little bit
- 34:29Speaker 4: of practicality.
- 34:30Speaker 2: I agree, I agreed. I think that's all we have
- 34:32Speaker 2: time for today, is just gricci.
- 34:34Speaker 4: I think so too. We'll be back next.
- 34:36Speaker 2: Week with Beck, but until then, have the best weekend
- 34:38Speaker 2: and we'll see you a Monday for a Money Diary.
