- 0:00Hey there and welcome back. I'm Dr. Hard Tongue
- 0:03and you're listening to the Family Chiropractic
- 0:05Center podcast coming to you from right here
- 0:07in Robinson Township. Today, I want to talk about
- 0:10something that affects just about every single
- 0:13one of us. And honestly, it's something most
- 0:16people don't think twice about until the pain
- 0:18starts. We're talking about sitting. Specifically,
- 0:22why sitting too much is really hard on your body
- 0:25and what you can do about it. Now, here's the
- 0:28thing. We live in a world that's designed for
- 0:31sitting. We sit in the car on the way to work.
- 0:34We sit at a desk for eight hours. We come home
- 0:36and sit on the couch. And then, we do it all
- 0:39again the next day. It doesn't feel dangerous.
- 0:42It feels normal. But over time, all that sitting
- 0:46adds up, and your body starts to feel it. Let
- 0:48me break this down for you. When you sit for
- 0:51long periods of time, your hip flexors, those
- 0:54muscles at the front of your hips, they get tight.
- 0:56They shorten up. And when those muscles are tight,
- 0:59they pull on your lower back. That pulling creates
- 1:02stress on the joints in your lumbar spine. So
- 1:06that aching low back pain you feel at the end
- 1:08of the day? A lot of the time, it starts right
- 1:10there. Here's what's interesting. Your spine
- 1:13is designed to move. It loves movement. The discs
- 1:17between your vertebrae actually get their nutrition
- 1:20through movement. When you're sitting still for
- 1:22hours, those discs aren't getting what they need.
- 1:25Over time, that can lead to stiffness, soreness,
- 1:29and a lot of wear and tear that just didn't have
- 1:31to happen. And it's not just your lower back.
- 1:34Sitting with your head forward staring at a screen
- 1:37puts enormous strain on your neck and upper back.
- 1:40Think about it this way. Your head weighs roughly
- 1:4310 to 12 pounds when it's sitting directly over
- 1:45your shoulders. But when you lean your head forward,
- 1:48even just a few inches, the effective weight
- 1:51your neck has to support multiplies significantly.
- 1:54We're talking several times that amount. That's
- 1:57a lot of stress for your neck muscles and joints
- 1:59to handle day after day. You know what I hear
- 2:02a lot? People say, I don't do anything strenuous.
- 2:05I just sit at a desk all day. I don't know why
- 2:07I'm in so much pain. And I get it. It doesn't
- 2:10feel like sitting should hurt you. But the absence
- 2:13of movement is its own kind of stress on the
- 2:15body. So what can you start doing today? The
- 2:18simplest thing is to break up your sitting. Set
- 2:21a timer on your phone for every 30 to 45 minutes.
- 2:24When it goes off, stand up. Walk to the kitchen.
- 2:27Do a few shoulder rolls. Take a short walk around
- 2:30the office. You don't need a full workout. You
- 2:33just need to interrupt the pattern. That little
- 2:36reset makes a real difference. Also, pay attention
- 2:39to your posture when you are sitting. Your feet
- 2:42should be flat on the floor, your hips and knees
- 2:44should be at roughly a 90 degree angle, and try
- 2:47to keep your screen at eye level so your head
- 2:50isn't constantly dropping forward. These small
- 2:52adjustments really do add up over time. Now,
- 2:55if you've already got pain, stiffness, or tension
- 2:58that's been hanging around, that's a great reason
- 3:00to come in and get evaluated. At Family Chiropractic
- 3:03Center, we look at how your spine is moving,
- 3:06where the restrictions are, and what's contributing
- 3:08to your discomfort. A lot of times, people are
- 3:11surprised at how much better they feel after
- 3:13just a few adjustments combined with some simple
- 3:16movement habits. You don't have to just live
- 3:18with the aches and pains of a desk job or a long
- 3:21commute. There are real, practical things we
- 3:24can do together to help your body feel better
- 3:26and function the way it's supposed to. So thank
- 3:29you so much for tuning in today. I hope this
- 3:31gave you something useful to think about and
- 3:34maybe something to act on. If you have questions
