  SPEAKER_01: He's yeah, he's down over here.

SPEAKER_02: He's trying to get unfrozen.

SPEAKER_01: That little box right there.
• 1:23
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, right there.
• 1:24
  SPEAKER_01: He's in there.
• 1:24
SPEAKER_01: Now he took the box out.
• 1:26
  SPEAKER_01: We scared him.
• 1:27
  SPEAKER_01: That's because I went like that.
• 1:28
SPEAKER_01: You were going like this?
• 1:29
SPEAKER_01: I was going like that over there.
• 1:31
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 1:32
  SPEAKER_01: It's like a voodoo.
• 1:34
  SPEAKER_01: It is.
• 1:34
SPEAKER_01: Uh, we always need more Jeff Zeke and Chief Engineer David Ainsley is sitting at home going, What in the heck?
• 1:40
  SPEAKER_01: I'm glad I'm not there.
• 1:42
  SPEAKER_01: Wait a minute, David.
• 1:43
SPEAKER_01: Thanks for not coming today.
• 1:45
SPEAKER_01: And uh I brought donuts and everything.
• 1:47
  SPEAKER_01: So let's let's start.
• 1:48
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you did.
• 1:49
SPEAKER_01: Um, let's start off with our story of the week.
• 1:52
SPEAKER_01: Um, I just thought that this was pretty interesting.
• 1:55
SPEAKER_01: For nearly a century, automobile dealerships and consumers alike thumbed through pages of physical booklets to check the market values of used cars.
• 2:04
SPEAKER_01: If you're a car guy, you have too.
• 2:06
SPEAKER_01: You know about Kelly Blue Book.
• 2:08
  SPEAKER_01: NADA.
• 2:08
  SPEAKER_01: NADA.
• 2:09
SPEAKER_01: I used to carry an NADA with me.
• 2:10
  SPEAKER_01: We all did.
• 2:11
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 2:11
SPEAKER_01: Uh Black Book, all that, all that stuff.
• 2:13
SPEAKER_01: Estimates for everything from a 41 Packard Clipper to a 65 Ford Country Squire to a 97 Pontiac Sunfire could be found in those print products.
• 2:22
SPEAKER_01: Do they make them anymore?
• 2:24
SPEAKER_01: Now, more than a hundred years after the National Automobile Dealers Association decided to formally track used vehicle values, those numbers are more likely found with the click of a mouse than a turn of a page.
• 2:36
SPEAKER_01: The first online vehicle classifieds appeared in the late 90s, and the decades that followed saw both the rise of digital shopping and the beginning of the end of the printed book.
• 2:47
SPEAKER_01: I got this story, by the way, from Automotive News.
• 2:50
SPEAKER_01: The last of its physical guides arrived in the fall of 2017, well after Kelly Blue Book's car values had been made available online.
• 3:01
SPEAKER_01: NADA started tracking vehicle values in 1922.
• 3:04
SPEAKER_01: I think it was the year you were born, right?
• 3:06
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 3:06
SPEAKER_01: Fresh off its own founding five years earlier, after the NADA started tracking vehicle values in 20 uh vehicle values back then, um, federal government approached the Trade Association about developing a way to track them to lend more transparency to the process.
• 3:24
SPEAKER_01: Auto dealerships weren't the only groups to use the guides to determine fair market value of vehicles.
• 3:30
  SPEAKER_01: Other entities did too.
• 3:33
SPEAKER_01: From consumers, insurance companies, and lenders to governments and even divorce courts.
• 3:39
  SPEAKER_01: Oh boy.
• 3:40
SPEAKER_01: States consulted NADA's used car guide when determining food assistance eligibility.
• 3:46
SPEAKER_01: I did not know that.
• 3:47
SPEAKER_01: For instance, after the Food Stamp Act of 1977 mandated they should consider the fair market value of a vehicle as a resource.
• 3:57
SPEAKER_01: Insurance companies use the book values to set total loss thresholds, and lenders routinely check the guides for loan origination purposes.
• 4:08
SPEAKER_01: NADA printed a consumer version of the NADA guide.
• 4:12
SPEAKER_01: Car buyers also consulted the Kelly family's blue books, which rose in circulation during the mid-century.
• 4:19
SPEAKER_01: The blue book also played a key role in car valuations during World War II.
• 4:24
  SPEAKER_01: I didn't know that.
• 4:25
SPEAKER_01: With materials and machinery redirected to support the U.S.
• 4:28
SPEAKER_01: war effort, very few consumer vehicles were produced.
• 4:31
SPEAKER_01: Demand for used vehicles soared.
• 4:35
SPEAKER_01: In 2015, NADA sold its used car guide to JD Power.
• 4:39
SPEAKER_01: It has become less efficient for dealers to consult a book now that they use software to run their retail operations.
• 4:46
SPEAKER_03: And that makes sense because all the products, all the materials they were using for the war did not go to the cars.
• 4:51
SPEAKER_03: They pulled it from the cars to make the war happen.
• 4:53
  SPEAKER_03: Right.
• 4:53
SPEAKER_03: So the use went up.
• 4:54
SPEAKER_03: So that I get that.
• 4:56
SPEAKER_01: Dealerships felt they could plan better with quick access to real-time vehicle values that can fluctuate based on color, location, mileage, condition, and various other factors.
• 5:10
SPEAKER_01: Blackbook in preceding years had dabbled in electronic delivery of wholesale car values by offering that data on floppy disks, remember those, and compact disks.
• 5:20
SPEAKER_01: Around the turn of the 21st century, it delivered data to handheld devices such as the Palm Pilot and Blackbook.
• 5:26
  SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
• 5:27
SPEAKER_01: Consumer-facing data providers evolved their offerings too.
• 5:30
SPEAKER_01: Traditional physical booklet publisher Edmonds began offering CD-ROMs with its used and new vehicle values in the 1990s.
• 5:39
SPEAKER_01: Now, as a digital first business, BlackBook is working to move users to its mobile applications where wholesale vehicle values are updated every day.
• 5:49
SPEAKER_01: So there was an interesting story because I do remember those.
• 5:52
SPEAKER_01: All the car guys used to carry those around, either in their glove box, and then you had to be outdated by three or four months, whatever.
• 5:59
SPEAKER_01: It gives you an idea.
• 6:00
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it would fit in your back pocket.
• 6:02
SPEAKER_02: It was small enough that you could carry it easy.
• 6:04
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 6:05
SPEAKER_03: And this, you know, we talk about all of the devices run like you talked about, all those the Palm Pilot and everything.
• 6:11
SPEAKER_03: This whole show is being run by a Commodore 86.
• 6:16
SPEAKER_01: And the operator is also one of the first uh inventors of the Commodore.
• 6:22
  SPEAKER_01: Mr.
• 6:22
SPEAKER_01: Marconi in the other city.
• 6:24
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, in the other city.
• 6:26
  unknown: Mr.
• 6:26
SPEAKER_01: Morris over there in Neederville.
• 6:28
SPEAKER_01: We're talking about you, sir.
• 6:30
  SPEAKER_02: I know, I know.
• 6:32
  SPEAKER_02: Uh-huh.
• 6:32
SPEAKER_02: It's better to be talked about.
• 6:35
SPEAKER_01: Talked about than frozen in time like you have been all morning long.
• 6:38
SPEAKER_02: Like I've been doing all day.
• 6:52

SPEAKER_01: The Supra has been built by Toyota in a collaboration with BMW, which includes a shared platform.
• 7:01
  SPEAKER_01: That's why.
• 7:03
  SPEAKER_01: Ford.
• 7:05
SPEAKER_01: I'm waiting on this one.
• 7:06

• 7:20
  SPEAKER_03: It's got a bit Martha.

  SPEAKER_02: Here you drive.
• 7:23
SPEAKER_02: Martha, here, here, you hold this.
• 7:25
SPEAKER_03: And you just talked about the center center line of the auto.
• 7:29
SPEAKER_01: Well, this one here got its own mind.
• 7:31
SPEAKER_01: Here, you want to drive, you drive.
• 7:33
SPEAKER_01: The issue can potentially lead to a loss of steering control.
• 7:36
  SPEAKER_01: You think?
• 7:38
SPEAKER_01: Affects vehicles from model years 2020 through 2021.
• 7:41
  SPEAKER_01: It includes the F-250, F-350, and F-450 vehicles.
• 7:47
SPEAKER_01: Dealers will inspect and repair or replace the faulty component free of charge.
• 7:51
  SPEAKER_01: Of course.
• 7:52
SPEAKER_01: If you can drive it in, we'll fix it.
• 7:56
SPEAKER_01: That may be the only one.
• 7:59
SPEAKER_03: Um I wonder if they would do they do uh Ford has that service where they do oil changes and tire repairs at your house.
• 8:06
SPEAKER_03: They've got a mobile thing through Ford.
• 8:07
SPEAKER_03: I don't know if that's for QuickLane or not.
• 8:09
SPEAKER_01: Well, I wonder if they could do recalls through their this is not one of those uh they're gonna update the software uh via the cloud.
• 8:17
  SPEAKER_01: That's not gonna happen.
• 8:19
SPEAKER_01: Other recalls, replacement fuel tank may leak during a rollover crash.
• 8:23
SPEAKER_01: Notice that I said replacement fuel tank.

• 8:58
SPEAKER_01: Loss of vehicle stability control from improperly tightened fasteners.
• 9:02
  SPEAKER_01: Oh.
• 9:03
SPEAKER_03: They don't say where the fasteners are, but well stability control is in the in the uh I don't know if it's a wheel housing or the axle area, because I've had mine go out on my Cadillac and they've had to replace them.
• 9:14

SPEAKER_01: Mars is doing the changing on all this, but I have nothing to do with it.
• 10:38
  SPEAKER_01: Looks a little rough.
• 10:40
  SPEAKER_01: But it's a uh roll bar.
• 10:41
  SPEAKER_01: Is that a 67?
• 10:43
  SPEAKER_01: I guess it is.
• 10:44
SPEAKER_02: It's kind of hard to tell 67 from eight from a shot like that.
• 10:47
  SPEAKER_02: I wouldn't know.
• 10:48
SPEAKER_01: Uh never was a Mustang.
• 10:51
  SPEAKER_01: Okay.

• 11:41
SPEAKER_01: I can't remember, but it was a live run-through of the used car department.
• 11:46
SPEAKER_01: And all of it, the drivers they'd drive through, and he'd stand on the hood of the car, whatever.
• 11:52
SPEAKER_01: And those that sell him, so's those that didn't run, he'd have guys push it through.
• 12:00
SPEAKER_01: They push him so that they can well, this is not because of Nickham, I can tell you that.
• 12:04
  SPEAKER_01: Anyway, good one, George.
• 12:06
  SPEAKER_01: Art Grindle Dodge.
• 12:08
SPEAKER_01: Okay, the next car up is in 1954, Chevrolet Corvette.
• 12:13
SPEAKER_01: Now, this is the first year for the Corvette 54, and they were all painted this color.
• 12:19
SPEAKER_01: Whites and they had the whole nine yards, what you see right there.
• 12:23
  SPEAKER_01: 72.
• 12:24
SPEAKER_01: 72 is what did they all have the red interior like that?
• 12:28
  SPEAKER_01: Yes.
• 12:29
  SPEAKER_01: Blood red.
• 12:29
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, white with blood red.
• 12:31
SPEAKER_01: And they had a beige top, and the windows were foldable part of the top.
• 12:38
  SPEAKER_01: They didn't have roll-down windows in the 54.
• 12:40
  unknown: 18.
• 12:41
  SPEAKER_01: Heinzman says 18.
• 12:43
  SPEAKER_01: 18?
• 12:44
  SPEAKER_03: 39 for 36.
• 12:45
  SPEAKER_01: George says 36.
• 12:47
  SPEAKER_01: It sold for$63,000.
• 12:49
  SPEAKER_01: Oh, wow.
• 12:51
SPEAKER_01: Because you know, every once in a while, I like to I like to look at some of these cars that uh are originals.
• 12:56
SPEAKER_01: All right, next up the 1969 Chevrolet Camaro.
• 13:01
  SPEAKER_01: Now that's yours, man.
• 13:02
SPEAKER_01: That is not a stock paint job on that car.
• 13:06
SPEAKER_01: But this yeah, though that's what I mean.
• 13:08
SPEAKER_01: The the black stripe things on the hood.
• 13:11
  SPEAKER_01: No, it's not.
• 13:12
  SPEAKER_01: So you think it's a real Z28?
• 13:14
  SPEAKER_01: I I don't I don't think so, but that's just my guessing.
• 13:18
  SPEAKER_01: A 1969 Chevrolet Camaro.
• 13:21
  SPEAKER_01: It looks like a Z28, but I think it's a 22.
• 13:25
  SPEAKER_01: 22.
• 13:26
SPEAKER_01: George, we're dependent on you.
• 13:28
  SPEAKER_01: Come on, Art.
• 13:29
  SPEAKER_01: Okay.
• 13:30
  SPEAKER_01: Jeff Heitzman says 21.
• 13:32
  SPEAKER_01: Okay, close, close.
• 13:34
  SPEAKER_01: What's art say?
• 13:35
  SPEAKER_01: Art Grindle.
• 13:37
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, art's a little some it's a little slow coming in off through Facebook.
• 13:42
SPEAKER_02: I'm not sure why, but well, anyway.
• 13:45
  SPEAKER_01: It's slow like us.
• 13:46
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's old like us.
• 13:48
  SPEAKER_01: Well, it's sold for$33,075.
• 13:53
SPEAKER_01: Because well, see, George is pretty close.
• 13:57
  SPEAKER_01: 23.
• 13:57
  SPEAKER_01: It sold for 33.
• 13:59
  SPEAKER_01: All right.
• 13:59
SPEAKER_01: Next up, this is a car for George.
• 14:04
SPEAKER_01: A 1932 Ford Roadster with the actual flames.
• 14:11
  SPEAKER_01: Look at that thing.
• 14:12
SPEAKER_01: That'd be a fun car to have, wouldn't it?
• 14:15
  SPEAKER_01: Oh.
• 14:16
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, with a flathead V8 in it.
• 14:18
  SPEAKER_01: You go, Richie Cunningham.
• 14:20
  SPEAKER_01: That's pretty much it.
• 14:21
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, 32 Ford Roadster.
• 14:23
SPEAKER_01: How much do you think that they got for that?
• 14:24
  SPEAKER_01: 19.
• 14:26
  SPEAKER_01: I'm almost gonna say 18.
• 14:27
SPEAKER_02: It's got a top on it and everything.
• 14:29
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 14:30
SPEAKER_03: It's like the Miada he drives.
• 14:31
SPEAKER_01: That would that would that would be so much fun to take on the uh hot rod?
• 14:35
SPEAKER_01: Hot Rod Tour of Texas.
• 14:36
SPEAKER_03: The flathead Ford in there?
• 14:38
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but look at the header pipe.
• 14:39
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 14:40
SPEAKER_03: Well, it's got the the zoomy underneath.
• 14:42
  SPEAKER_03: It does?
• 14:44
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it runs down to an exhaust, but you can undo three volts and you got it wide open.
• 14:48

• 21:54
SPEAKER_02: So this week in auto history, I'm going to run through this kind of quick because we are running a little behind, like you said.
• 22:00
SPEAKER_02: In 1893, the Durier Motor Wagon Company was founded.
• 22:03
SPEAKER_02: Now, this is important because they actually had the first gasoline power.
• 22:07
SPEAKER_01: I'd like to see you full screen there, Mr.
• 22:09
  SPEAKER_01: Mars.
• 22:09
  SPEAKER_01: Is that possible?
• 22:10
SPEAKER_01: Because we're just sitting here like lumps on the log.
• 22:13
SPEAKER_02: Well, because I was wanting to make sure you were good.
• 22:16
  SPEAKER_02: Oh God.
• 22:16
  SPEAKER_02: Now I can't see you.
• 22:18
  SPEAKER_02: No, I can't.
• 22:19
  SPEAKER_02: I'm messing with you.
• 22:20
SPEAKER_02: Anyway, this led to the foundation of the Dure Durier Motor Wagon Company.
• 22:27
SPEAKER_02: Now, this is the first automotive manufacturing business that was actually way ahead, a decade almost ahead of uh Henry Ford.
• 22:34
SPEAKER_02: The other thing that happened in 1904 this week, the Buick Motor Company moves to Flint, Michigan.
• 22:40
SPEAKER_02: Now, this is important because this set the stage for Buick to actually become General Motors in 1908.
• 22:47
SPEAKER_02: They kind of developed it, but it also created the powerhouse of Flint, Michigan in the automotive industry.
• 22:52
SPEAKER_02: That's when people started moving there and it really started taking off.
• 22:56
  SPEAKER_02: 1926, Route 66 was approved.
• 22:58
SPEAKER_02: 2,448 mile highway became the mother road from Chicago to Santa Monica.
• 23:04
  SPEAKER_02: Went through several states.
• 23:05
SPEAKER_02: We talked about it through Texas and uh several other states.
• 23:08
SPEAKER_02: 1967, the first episode of Speed Racer.
• 23:14
SPEAKER_02: Forgot to push the buttons.
• 23:19
SPEAKER_01: First episode, we're okay with all that.
• 23:21
SPEAKER_01: Just go give it a little bit on people.
• 23:23
SPEAKER_02: Speed Racer aired, and uh this is the great plan part one.
• 23:27
SPEAKER_02: Introduced Speed Racer and all his buddies.
• 23:30
SPEAKER_02: Now in 1968, the AMC Javelin went on sale.
• 23:34
SPEAKER_02: Now this was AMC's entry into the pony car wars against the Mustang and the Camaro.
• 23:39
SPEAKER_02: It was pretty stylish, it was pretty popular, but it just did not hang on and did not last very long.
• 23:45
SPEAKER_02: 1967, the Ford S Fire was produced.
• 23:49
SPEAKER_02: I mean it never rang a bell when I read this and started looking into it.
• 23:52
SPEAKER_02: Did you call it an A-S-P-I-R-E?
• 23:56
  SPEAKER_02: A S P I R E it's made by Taco Bell.
• 24:01
  SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
• 24:03
SPEAKER_02: It ended its brief US run in 1967.
• 24:06
SPEAKER_02: It was basically a world car, and they brought it in trying to be in the subcompact market, and it did not work very well.
• 24:12
SPEAKER_02: What did you call it?
• 24:13
  SPEAKER_02: A-S-P-I-R-E.
• 24:14
SPEAKER_01: No, no, what is how do you pronounce that spire?
• 24:17
  SPEAKER_02: I pronounce Aspire.
• 24:18
  SPEAKER_02: Aspire.
• 24:22
SPEAKER_01: I'm thinking of be called a spire.
• 24:24
SPEAKER_01: You aspire to be something other than what you are.
• 24:27
SPEAKER_03: I'm going down to our Greenleaves and buy an aspire.
• 24:34
  SPEAKER_02: Then on next week's 1964 1984.
• 24:39
  SPEAKER_02: Chrysler introduces the minivan.
• 24:41
SPEAKER_02: Now, this is something that it really has left, it's still producing minivans, and it really is a family vehicle, a people mover.
• 24:48
SPEAKER_02: A lot of people use it for like small buses, you know, a lot of events using the transport people, and it's really uh changed the world as we see, kind of leading into the SUV market that we're into now.
• 25:00
SPEAKER_02: 2004, Tata Motors actually rang the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange when there was anything coming.
• 25:11
SPEAKER_03: Welcome to the joint venture.
• 25:15
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so that's the Tata's right there.
• 25:18
SPEAKER_02: Then uh in 1920, the movie Death Racers was released, and it's a low-budget action field starring rap duo Insane Clown Posse was the starters of this, and they were forced to compete in a deadly cross-country race.
• 25:33
SPEAKER_02: Lots of violence, dark humor, and over the top.
• 25:37
SPEAKER_02: Kind of like this show.
• 25:40
  SPEAKER_01: Thank you, Michael.
• 25:41
  SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh.
• 25:44
  SPEAKER_01: All right.

• 26:01
SPEAKER_01: In less than 20 years, Tsutumo Tom Mutano died September 20th, just days before his 78th birthday, and he changed automotive history.
• 26:11
SPEAKER_01: In 83, after short stints at GMBMW, Matano joined Mazda and went on to design what would become the best-selling two-seat roadster in history, the Mazda MX5 Miata that we reviewed this hour.
• 26:23
SPEAKER_01: The lightweight two-seater debuted in 1989 at the Chicago Auto Show.
• 26:28
SPEAKER_01: Matano had a hand in shaping many cars and crossovers in his 28-year design career.
• 26:33
SPEAKER_01: That's uh Matano's waterfall grille on America's top-selling car in 76, the Oldsmobile Cutlass.
• 26:39
  SPEAKER_01: I bet you didn't know that.
• 26:41
SPEAKER_01: But in is the first two generations of the MX-5 that propelled Mitano to the top ranks of the industry's designers.
• 26:48
SPEAKER_01: Uh Mazda has sold more than 1.2 million MX-5 Miatas.
• 26:52
SPEAKER_01: Future versions are being considered, even though sales have slowed.
• 26:57
SPEAKER_01: So sorry to see you go.
