- 1:06Speaker 2: a volleyball player in the world and a person of personage.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Yeah, with three tournaments, her.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Personhood is it's on the line. Yeah, I just have
- 1:14Speaker 2: to do a comedy show and get out.
- 1:16Speaker 1: I'm raising a human yeah, and yours. I'm not doing that.
- 1:19Speaker 1: You'ren't even raising yourself, you know what I'm saying.
- 1:21Speaker 2: No, I've decided not to grow up. That's why i
- 1:23Speaker 2: chose this job.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Yeah, that must be nice.
- 1:26Speaker 2: It's pretty good.
- 1:27Speaker 4: You basically have the life that everybody wants, and I
- 1:30Speaker 4: hope you were aware.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Well, let's be careful. So let's be careful what we
- 1:33Speaker 1: wish for a.
- 1:34Speaker 4: Lot of confusion maybe that people have about what your
- 1:37Speaker 4: life is about, because I know the real Johnny you
- 1:40Speaker 4: do on the inside.
- 1:41Speaker 1: I know there's a big crying baby just right now.
- 1:45Speaker 2: I do. Mean it's I don't know it is, but no,
- 1:48Speaker 2: there's challenges, but it's fun and uh and I don't
- 1:50Speaker 2: have to play volleyball. That's my favorite part.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Well, we drove to Atlanta, which you know is a
- 1:54Speaker 1: lovely drive.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Oh it's beautiful. Yeah, we got to go over Mon Eagle.
- 1:58Speaker 2: I want to go over the The truckers try to
- 2:00Speaker 2: pass each other going I want to go two miles
- 2:02Speaker 2: faster than you. I'm going to stay and block this lane.
- 2:05Speaker 4: Forts that I'm pretty certain. But they did, they did
- 2:09Speaker 4: pretty well.
- 2:10Speaker 2: There's laws against you going as fast as you want
- 2:12Speaker 2: to go to though, John if we're honest, how fast
- 2:14Speaker 2: do you want to go?
- 2:15Speaker 1: We're not talking about that.
- 2:16Speaker 2: You need one of those What's cool about money Egill
- 2:18Speaker 2: is they have those runaway ramps. You ever want to
- 2:19Speaker 2: do one of those just for fun, just go into
- 2:21Speaker 2: one of the big sand yeah mountains, just to be
- 2:24Speaker 2: able to destroy your car.
- 2:25Speaker 1: And would you think it would I would say it
- 2:27Speaker 1: would hurt.
- 2:27Speaker 4: Yeah, maybe not if I had that old lecture.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Go with a rental, get that extra five dollars of insurance.
- 2:33Speaker 2: What my brakes sort of going out? Wh's wrong with
- 2:35Speaker 2: you people? What was I to do?
- 2:39Speaker 1: So we because you can't drive through Chattanooga anymore.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Without said horse and buggy.
- 2:49Speaker 4: No, So we drove through Chattanoga pretty quickly. And then,
- 2:52Speaker 4: which is crazy, hasn't happened in like five years. But
- 2:54Speaker 4: got to say that you draft Chatoo without what I'm saying.
- 2:57Speaker 4: There's a lot of traffic there.
- 2:59Speaker 1: We can't get through. Had a new game without.
- 3:03Speaker 4: Other people are trying to stop you by getting in
- 3:05Speaker 4: your way. I don't know if they know this, but
- 3:07Speaker 4: I'm the one trying to go somewhere and the rest.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Of it anyway, I've got important stuff to do.
- 3:11Speaker 4: And then we got to Atlanta, and she so she
- 3:16Speaker 4: had a prospect camp in North Carolina near Charlotte. But
- 3:21Speaker 4: this was a makeup tournament because of the ice storm,
- 3:25Speaker 4: meaning that all the kids get to wear the parents.
- 3:29Speaker 4: Doesn't it run when they get sweaty.
- 3:30Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 3:31Speaker 4: I couldn't believe. I looks in mascara. It was like
- 3:34Speaker 4: the Dadliner. Anyway, so we the coaches were like, yeah,
- 3:39Speaker 4: you gotta go, you gotte.
- 3:40Speaker 1: She got invited to this prospect camp.
- 3:42Speaker 4: It was a beach camp, okay, And so literally then
- 3:44Speaker 4: we played one game. They're playing three, but we only
- 3:47Speaker 4: got to play one. By the way, she had three
- 3:49Speaker 4: kills on seven hits. No air she did, agreed, and
- 3:51Speaker 4: then me and her literally went over in the convention
- 3:53Speaker 4: Citter got on a train that takes you straight to
- 3:55Speaker 4: the airport, and me and her.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Marda flew no.
- 3:59Speaker 1: No, they have a train specifically at the Commission Center
- 4:01Speaker 1: that takes.
- 4:01Speaker 2: You run above the ground.
- 4:02Speaker 4: Because this is the Georgia International it's connected to the airport. Yeah,
- 4:06Speaker 4: basically yeah, And so then we got on a train
- 4:09Speaker 4: and flew to Charlotte, got and then she went out
- 4:11Speaker 4: in the cold and did a beach camp. The next
- 4:13Speaker 4: day and then we flew home to Nashville while my
- 4:16Speaker 4: wife drove home from Atlanta and basically all day travel
- 4:21Speaker 4: and all day stuff. Like by the time we got there,
- 4:22Speaker 4: she just drove straight to the airport it circled for
- 4:24Speaker 4: and it was crazy.
- 4:25Speaker 1: It was a crazy time.
- 4:26Speaker 2: No, you win. I had my own journey, but yeah,
- 4:29Speaker 2: you win. You I won't even tell my story.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Hey, I will tell you this.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:33Speaker 4: I had the most like mid forties dad moment in
- 4:36Speaker 4: the airport. So we didn't check. We just carried on everything. Yeah,
- 4:41Speaker 4: and they were like, We're going to check this suitcase.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Now I'm gonna tell his little secret.
- 4:45Speaker 4: I have a pocket knife that I've now gone through
- 4:47Speaker 4: like four airport.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Pull it on somebody. If they decided to check your bag,
- 4:50Speaker 2: you go, how about now.
- 4:53Speaker 4: It's in there the air and they never they never
- 4:56Speaker 4: find it, Like I just fly with this pocket knife.
- 4:59Speaker 4: And so I thought they found the pocket knife. He
- 5:01Speaker 4: was like, usually there's a pair of needlenose pliers in here.
- 5:05Speaker 4: I was like, yeah, I keep those. Is that not allowed?
- 5:07Speaker 2: Because this is how this is how you know, that's
- 5:10Speaker 2: how I pulled ticks off midflight.
- 5:12Speaker 1: I keep needlenosed.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Vice ice cripts around because when you go to hotels,
- 5:17Speaker 2: you never know, you never know, Like all the time.
- 5:19Speaker 1: I need to I need to take something apart. I
- 5:21Speaker 1: need to fix something.
- 5:22Speaker 2: What are you fix it in a hotel? Dude? Where
- 5:24Speaker 2: hotels are you staying in? You know you got to
- 5:27Speaker 2: replace a new washer on the faucet because it's leaking
- 5:31Speaker 2: these days, ends aren't what they used to be.
- 5:33Speaker 1: I don't know, man, Like you know you need.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Sometimes you gotta get needles and kill a bedbug too.
- 5:36Speaker 2: You gotta nip them. You gotta nip those things. Why
- 5:39Speaker 2: do you need needlenose? You you just like having you
- 5:43Speaker 2: need them?
- 5:44Speaker 4: So the guy take them out. I've never once needed
- 5:46Speaker 4: parent need those players, like it depends on how big
- 5:49Speaker 4: they are. So he opens up the bag, takes me out.
- 5:51Speaker 4: He's like these are great, These are fine, and I
- 5:53Speaker 4: was like, dude, that's the best tool. Iver's like, no,
- 5:54Speaker 4: these are awesome. Everyone needs one of these. When we
- 5:56Speaker 4: had this whole conversation, I was like this really, this
- 5:59Speaker 4: gave me energy.
- 6:00Speaker 2: And then he but he missed your knife. Yeah, but
- 6:04Speaker 2: don't they run it through the scanner. They don't see
- 6:06Speaker 2: it in the scam.
- 6:07Speaker 1: They see Apparently, I feel like I'm given listen. If
- 6:09Speaker 1: you're listening and you have what do.
- 6:11Speaker 2: You have some kind of sheath that covers the X rays?
- 6:14Speaker 1: It's just a pocket knife.
- 6:15Speaker 4: But if you're listening and it's not in good faith
- 6:17Speaker 4: right now, please, I'm not giving you any ideas.
- 6:19Speaker 2: What are you? Are you hiding this thing?
- 6:21Speaker 1: I just it's like right there in my little toiletry thing.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Uh huh, yeah, just a pocket knife.
- 6:27Speaker 4: It's folded, it's closed. I've never done anything nefarious with it.
- 6:31Speaker 4: I just need to cut things sometimes.
- 6:33Speaker 2: And needle nose things.
- 6:35Speaker 4: Say they put these wristbands on when you go in
- 6:37Speaker 4: for the day.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Yeah, that's charm.
- 6:39Speaker 1: By the way, you know that when we go, you know.
- 6:40Speaker 2: What takes those wristbands off for a while? That knife
- 6:43Speaker 2: or a needle nose. That's right when you just pull
- 6:46Speaker 2: it off because it's a stretchy.
- 6:47Speaker 4: You're already paying thousands of dollars for the for the fees,
- 6:50Speaker 4: you're rather paying thousands off for the hotel, and then
- 6:52Speaker 4: when you go they also charge you as parents to
- 6:53Speaker 4: get in.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Isn't kids sports a scam? I mean, will you admit
- 6:56Speaker 2: it to me even though you're in it? Isn't it
- 6:58Speaker 2: a scam one hundred.
- 6:59Speaker 4: Well, I will not say it's a scam, but it
- 7:01Speaker 4: is a money making endeavor.
- 7:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:04Speaker 4: Now, I'm not saying that the clubs are all making
- 7:05Speaker 4: all the money because most of those guys, those coaches
- 7:07Speaker 4: are getting paid next to nothing.
- 7:08Speaker 1: And it's tough the club fees.
- 7:10Speaker 2: I get somebody's making money.
- 7:11Speaker 4: But the tournaments when twenty five thousand people come and
- 7:14Speaker 4: the kids paid, the club paid the registration for the team,
- 7:17Speaker 4: right then. The hotels have these state of play contracts,
- 7:21Speaker 4: so they're getting giving these things and then you pay.
- 7:25Speaker 1: Sometimes sometimes we'll pay fifty bucks.
- 7:26Speaker 4: To get in for the weekend ooof And you're like, yeah,
- 7:29Speaker 4: and everyone you see paid fifty bucks. Johnny, that's a
- 7:31Speaker 4: lot of fifty bucks. That is a lot of don't
- 7:33Speaker 4: do math, per se.
- 7:34Speaker 2: I did Sue Falls South Dakota went up there to do.
- 7:38Speaker 2: My buddy Tom Henderson does the thing up there called
- 7:41Speaker 2: Restoration Generation. It's a big men's ministry thing, and he
- 7:46Speaker 2: does this event called Resident Men's Summit every year.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Imblody's shortened it.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Yeah, Resident, So I've done it. This is my third time.
- 7:54Speaker 2: It was their tenth year. And he goes through the
- 7:56Speaker 2: tenth year, we're moving it to the arena. It's grown
- 7:58Speaker 2: every year. Wow. So there's an arena there and he goes,
- 8:01Speaker 2: we think we're going to have about five thousand men.
- 8:03Speaker 2: I go, oh man. So he was very excited. Tom
- 8:05Speaker 2: is such a great guy. And I go, all right,
- 8:08Speaker 2: I'll come vicecripts. It is one hundred percent. Yeah, no
- 8:13Speaker 2: metal detectors at the building. They were So here was
- 8:16Speaker 2: the poster, me, John Maxwell, Tim Tebow. Wow. And then
- 8:21Speaker 2: my buddy Sammy out of Bay who is out of Toledo, Ohio,
- 8:24Speaker 2: was a pastor there. I mean it was a killer
- 8:27Speaker 2: just I felt like a little bit of like a
- 8:30Speaker 2: fish out of water. What am I doing there? Yeah?
- 8:32Speaker 4: Oh man, you're hey, listen on you except two championships.
- 8:38Speaker 2: So he got there late. So all that said, my brother,
- 8:40Speaker 2: my brother went with me, and of course the whole
- 8:41Speaker 2: day he was just like, I want to get a
- 8:42Speaker 2: photo of Tebow. Dude. I don't want to be the
- 8:44Speaker 2: weird pushy get a photo of Tebow guy. If he's
- 8:47Speaker 2: like got a body man and a whole thing, and
- 8:49Speaker 2: you know it's going to be a whole thing, right,
- 8:50Speaker 2: I go, we will try. I'll promise you we'll try
- 8:53Speaker 2: I'm not gonna be weird, and then Tebow walks by
- 8:56Speaker 2: us to go on stage. He was the last session
- 8:58Speaker 2: I had done my thing in the morning, and then
- 9:00Speaker 2: he bo gets there. He walked by, and my buddy
- 9:03Speaker 2: Marty Simpson was there just happenstance. He had a show
- 9:06Speaker 2: nearby and he was on our same flight going into
- 9:08Speaker 2: Zoux Falls. So we ended up hanging out. He came
- 9:10Speaker 2: to the event to hang out, and then we're standing
- 9:13Speaker 2: there and Tebow walks by and we're like, John, he's
- 9:17Speaker 2: so handsome, like it's shocking. It is shocking to see
- 9:22Speaker 2: another man that handsome, that up. I mean, and he's tall.
- 9:26Speaker 2: You know, you see a little steel jack oh ye, yeah, yeah,
- 9:29Speaker 2: you see Hollywood guy. But he's lean. He's probably got
- 9:31Speaker 2: twenty eight inch waist, but he's just got the But
- 9:33Speaker 2: I'm telling you, like, he's the chest, he's doing the
- 9:35Speaker 2: he's a V shape. He's a V shaped guy. But
- 9:37Speaker 2: I'm telling you, man, you go like you see Hollywood guys. Yeah,
- 9:41Speaker 2: and they're handsome, but they're like five foot two. You
- 9:43Speaker 2: put them right in your pocket. Yeah, you know, Tom
- 9:45Speaker 2: Cruise is little, right, Tim Tebow is handsome and he's
- 9:48Speaker 2: as tall as me. Yeah, so you're like, this is
- 9:51Speaker 2: what's possible. It's not for you though, No, No, it's
- 9:54Speaker 2: not possible. It's what.
- 9:55Speaker 1: No, he was blessed with things that you can't.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Well, and he can speak, and he's doing all this
- 10:00Speaker 2: good in the world.
- 10:01Speaker 1: Like God, I'm sick of it. We get it.
- 10:05Speaker 2: No, my wife really wanted to go on this one.
- 10:06Speaker 2: She stayed back.
- 10:07Speaker 1: Oh, I'm sure she did.
- 10:08Speaker 2: She wanted to. She wanted to well, because he's done
- 10:11Speaker 2: so much for a special needs community and she was
- 10:12Speaker 2: a caregiver and the Night to Shine prom and all that.
- 10:15Speaker 1: I'm sorry I made that joke that I was.
- 10:17Speaker 2: That she wanted to meet t Bow because she's going
- 10:18Speaker 2: to hit on him.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Well, you talk about how handsome he was. What do
- 10:21Speaker 1: you think she thinks.
- 10:21Speaker 2: Oh, no, thinks he's handsome too. I mean it's just
- 10:24Speaker 2: some people. It's just subject you know how men try
- 10:25Speaker 2: to do that thing of like I don't see handsome.
- 10:28Speaker 2: That's how straight I am. No, you do, stop acting
- 10:31Speaker 2: like you don't you know a handsome man when you
- 10:33Speaker 2: see one. Quit it. Quit BacT like it means anything
- 10:38Speaker 2: to notice it doesn't beauty in another person yeah, you know. Yeah,
- 10:42Speaker 2: it's like the cardinal that the Red Cardinals, the prettiest one.
- 10:45Speaker 4: Oh, I thought you met like the Catholic priest. No,
- 10:49Speaker 4: I don't even know who the current cardinal is.
- 10:51Speaker 2: But I don't either, but he's got that fun hat. Gosh. Anyway,
- 10:55Speaker 2: t Bow was very nice. He did take a photo
- 10:58Speaker 2: with us. I'll I'll have Adam put the clip right
- 11:01Speaker 2: here in the clip if we you know, you can
- 11:03Speaker 2: share the photo if this turns into a clip, or
- 11:05Speaker 2: I'll share it in the notes or something. You can
- 11:07Speaker 2: see my photo with TBO. He was very kind and.
- 11:11Speaker 1: Maybe he wanted a picture with you. You know, you're on
- 11:14Speaker 1: the docket.
- 11:14Speaker 2: That's true. The docket sounds like it's court Tom the docket. Yeah,
- 11:22Speaker 2: but no, that was a fun one. In Jimmy Maxwell
- 11:25Speaker 2: met Joe Maxwell. He was very kind too. I saw
- 11:28Speaker 2: him speak a couple of times. He spoke at this
- 11:30Speaker 2: donor's dinner. That was the other thing is I got
- 11:31Speaker 2: there the day before because they wanted me to do
- 11:33Speaker 2: the prison. Tom goes, come in, we'll do the jail.
- 11:36Speaker 2: That's cool, and then we'll go to the donors dinner.
- 11:39Speaker 2: And I spoke I did twenty minutes of comedy, and
- 11:41Speaker 2: John Maxwell did about thirty minutes of like Q and
- 11:43Speaker 2: A and then like an interview with Tom and then
- 11:47Speaker 2: the next day was there, then it was morning.
- 11:48Speaker 4: It was like a when I was a youth pastor
- 11:51Speaker 4: early so you and I were in the band. Like, well,
- 11:55Speaker 4: I got my first job a good friend of ours
- 11:59Speaker 4: name Terry Allen, which is Dane's dad.
- 12:01Speaker 2: Great, yeah, Terry's the best.
- 12:02Speaker 4: And like, I didn't really have anybody mentoring me back then,
- 12:05Speaker 4: you know, besides my own dad, and he was in Nashville.
- 12:07Speaker 4: But Terry really took took me under his wing and
- 12:11Speaker 4: like introduced me to leadership books.
- 12:13Speaker 2: Oh, Jo, thought you were gonna say. I found out
- 12:15Speaker 2: everything he was telling me was just straight out of
- 12:17Speaker 2: a John Maxwell book and he was acting pawning it
- 12:20Speaker 2: off on his own.
- 12:21Speaker 1: Well, no, no, he was like, dude, you need to
- 12:22Speaker 1: read you know.
- 12:23Speaker 4: Yeah, I think I read twenty one Irrefutable Laws of
- 12:25Speaker 4: Leader and you know, back so I remember, like I
- 12:28Speaker 4: just that's a big one.
- 12:29Speaker 1: I took to it.
- 12:30Speaker 2: You know, I sold a few copies.
- 12:32Speaker 4: That's as a writer. Though, now I go, that's a
- 12:34Speaker 4: lot of laws. I mean, Jesus, the.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Guy only gave ten.
- 12:37Speaker 4: You know, I'm saying in the Coming off of the Mountain,
- 12:40Speaker 4: that is a lot of laws. I mean, there's six hundred.
- 12:41Speaker 2: He was talking on stage about how many books he's written.
- 12:43Speaker 2: I think he turns seventeen. I'm going to go a
- 12:46Speaker 2: weekend that we were out, he turned seventy nine, so
- 12:49Speaker 2: he was it was he was literally speaking on his birthday.
- 12:51Speaker 4: I'm going to guess he's written forty higher, higher, sixty
- 12:55Speaker 4: five higher.
- 12:56Speaker 2: One hundred higher, No, ninety two, ninety two original, he's
- 13:00Speaker 2: written ninety two books.
- 13:01Speaker 1: See, I've written thirty five.
- 13:03Speaker 2: Yeah, but but you could get there. You're only come
- 13:05Speaker 2: on seventy nine.
- 13:07Speaker 4: Like three of those are in my voice in some way,
- 13:11Speaker 4: either as a co author or author.
- 13:12Speaker 1: Right, So, well, that's not true. I've written other.
- 13:15Speaker 2: John here, John, Here's a lot of voices.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Guys, you don't even want to know in my head
- 13:20Speaker 1: right now.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Speaking of other voices on the podcast, John, let's take
- 13:23Speaker 2: a minute and hear from a few of our fine sponsors.
- 13:36Speaker 4: If you had, say, five irrefutable laws, I mean to me,
- 13:43Speaker 4: it's it's a daunting task.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Tony Yellow snow, Yeah, don't swim. Thirty minutes after is
- 13:50Speaker 2: it thirty minutes after eating? Then they say that's that's not.
- 13:53Speaker 1: It's a myth. Now they say, jump right in the swims.
- 13:56Speaker 2: The best thing you can do. You need to start
- 13:58Speaker 2: getting the get the digestion. You don't at that spare tire.
- 14:01Speaker 2: You gotta start. You know.
- 14:02Speaker 1: It's funny.
- 14:03Speaker 4: I have been talking to my daughter about like things
- 14:06Speaker 4: in life. Because we had a bunch of girls in
- 14:08Speaker 4: the car. We took them all out for these loaded teas.
- 14:10Speaker 4: You know, they all get these loaded tea's. Now, which
- 14:12Speaker 4: are these caffeinated iced tea? Either get the tea's or
- 14:16Speaker 4: they get like these.
- 14:17Speaker 2: I thought it was like some kind of I don't know,
- 14:19Speaker 2: a hormone supplement, Like I got a load tea. I
- 14:22Speaker 2: gotta get loaded tea. My doctor, My doctor gave me
- 14:25Speaker 2: an injection.
- 14:26Speaker 1: But the kids all writing is really funny because you
- 14:28Speaker 1: hear what all they what is a loaded tea? It's
- 14:31Speaker 1: like this high.
- 14:31Speaker 2: It's like it's like a dirty soda. They put creamer
- 14:33Speaker 2: intoor something. What do they do?
- 14:34Speaker 1: We get those two the dirty one of those last night?
- 14:37Speaker 2: But which, by the way, what's like Mormon thing? You know?
- 14:39Speaker 4: Yeah, because they all watched The Lives of Mormon wives.
- 14:43Speaker 4: They all got inig. This swig is like, guys, all
- 14:46Speaker 4: you gotta do is go find a soda from the
- 14:48Speaker 4: gas station, get some creamer in it, throw a couple
- 14:50Speaker 4: of flavors in it, and go sell it for ten dollars.
- 14:53Speaker 4: And me and you were in the wrong businesses. But anyway,
- 14:55Speaker 4: I was like, hey, let's talk about all the kids talking.
- 14:58Speaker 4: I want to give you a list. This is not
- 15:00Speaker 4: twenty one irrefutable list, but here are things you should
- 15:04Speaker 4: never joke about. And I started making like, you know,
- 15:07Speaker 4: never joke about someone else's appearance. Never joke about politics, yeah,
- 15:11Speaker 4: never joke about religion, Never joke about disability, never joke
- 15:15Speaker 4: about Who are you telling this to to my daughter?
- 15:17Speaker 4: Like after the fact, because you're listening to teenagers talk.
- 15:20Speaker 2: She'd been drinking her tea and she was hopped up
- 15:21Speaker 2: on it and she was just letting the slurs fly.
- 15:23Speaker 2: What was going on, not her, I'm just talk about this.
- 15:26Speaker 4: I'm just listening to all the teenagers talking. Yeah, I'm
- 15:28Speaker 4: just saying, hey, I'm just noticing things right.
- 15:30Speaker 2: Their filters a little bit down right.
- 15:32Speaker 4: So what you're saying, well, in this generation, you know, oh,
- 15:35Speaker 4: I think they're more careful.
- 15:36Speaker 2: That's what people act like. Oh, it's just correct. Now
- 15:39Speaker 2: you can't say anything.
- 15:40Speaker 4: Part of the deal is is their emotional age is
- 15:43Speaker 4: pretty far behind their chronological age in terms of I know,
- 15:47Speaker 4: you can't say every single person or whatever, but especially
- 15:49Speaker 4: if they're neurodivergent or anything.
- 15:50Speaker 1: But it could be up to five years.
- 15:52Speaker 4: So seventeen eighteen year olds maybe talking about things that
- 15:55Speaker 4: you and I in our generation the nineties were talked.
- 15:57Speaker 1: About at like twelve or thirteen.
- 15:59Speaker 4: So to figure out because most of the interaction is online,
- 16:02Speaker 4: so when they're together, they're they're.
- 16:05Speaker 2: Oh, I get that online thing. Yeah, because you're more
- 16:07Speaker 2: likely to be inappropriate if you feel like there's this wall, right,
- 16:09Speaker 2: it's keyboard, keyboard.
- 16:11Speaker 4: Now you're figuring out how it works with real people
- 16:13Speaker 4: in real life and so and then you only get
- 16:14Speaker 4: that through practice, and you're still practicing Johnny someday, head.
- 16:17Speaker 2: Buddy, I'm gonna get it.
- 16:18Speaker 1: Give it some time one days.
- 16:20Speaker 2: Fully compartmentalized.
- 16:21Speaker 4: So your generation, for you in particular, it's like you're
- 16:23Speaker 4: thirty years behind your chronological age.
- 16:25Speaker 2: And so yeah, you're doing okay. I feel like I
- 16:28Speaker 2: would not need twenty one that's pretty good.
- 16:32Speaker 1: So you know, there's a song.
- 16:33Speaker 4: There's an artist she listens to you named Tate mcray.
- 16:35Speaker 2: I've heard of Tate McCray.
- 16:36Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I'm not endorsing everything Tate mcray oh sings about.
- 16:40Speaker 2: I don't know enough to know about her.
- 16:42Speaker 1: But it's funny.
- 16:42Speaker 4: She had a song we listened to yesterday and it
- 16:44Speaker 4: was about I wish I'd have met you in the nineties.
- 16:47Speaker 1: So that whole generation a right for this for her
- 16:51Speaker 1: predigital Yeah, say it says all the time, I wish
- 16:53Speaker 1: I just would have been born in the nineties.
- 16:54Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think that is going to be a thing. Yeah,
- 16:56Speaker 2: being an analog kid becomes like something you long for,
- 17:00Speaker 2: You did you don't You missed out on this thing.
- 17:02Speaker 2: Then innocence probably.
- 17:03Speaker 4: Pre nine eleven pre yeah, right, less worry or digital
- 17:07Speaker 4: you're not worried about walking to a school and getting shot.
- 17:09Speaker 4: I mean, I can say, and I don't mean to
- 17:12Speaker 4: she wouldn't have be sharing this, but I mean remember
- 17:14Speaker 4: they locked down and said he's school or her freshman
- 17:16Speaker 4: year one time. Yeah, you know, and she was sending
- 17:18Speaker 4: us texts and stuff like right as if, hey, if
- 17:20Speaker 4: something happens and you're like, it was so heartbreaking and
- 17:22Speaker 4: it wasn't anything.
- 17:23Speaker 1: Everything was okay, But kids have to worry about that now.
- 17:25Speaker 4: Or if they go into a movie theater and someone
- 17:27Speaker 4: just comes and stands at the bottom, you can see
- 17:29Speaker 4: the kids tense up because they're paying attention to what's
- 17:32Speaker 4: you know out there in our in nineties.
- 17:34Speaker 2: I never, no, I didn't think that.
- 17:35Speaker 1: I mean there was danger, but I don't think you
- 17:37Speaker 1: ever thought about it.
- 17:38Speaker 2: Mom would drop us off at them all and just
- 17:39Speaker 2: be like, I'll pick you up at six or whatever
- 17:41Speaker 2: and you just.
- 17:42Speaker 1: Take a skateboard and go outside. Or yeah, they would
- 17:44Speaker 1: drop us off at Ipperland, USA.
- 17:46Speaker 2: Skateboar would have been dangerous for me.
- 17:47Speaker 1: Well, it was probably dangerous for me too.
- 17:49Speaker 2: I fell lost straight to the er.
- 17:51Speaker 1: But yeah, hey, John, I think it's about that.
- 17:53Speaker 2: Okay, let's do it.
- 17:54Speaker 1: It's my segment. We call. They talked about that Bridget
- 18:11Speaker 1: of Sweden.
- 18:13Speaker 2: She just gets to be Bridget of Sweden, no last name,
- 18:16Speaker 2: thirteen o three to thirteen seventy three. Okay, that's why
- 18:19Speaker 2: there wasn't bringing in Bridgetes then I.
- 18:20Speaker 4: Would imagine not a Swedish mystic saint and founder of
- 18:23Speaker 4: the Brigittine religious order.
- 18:25Speaker 2: Well that makes sense.
- 18:26Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean that's that. I like something that the bridge,
- 18:30Speaker 4: it's called what it is, you know what I'm saying now.
- 18:31Speaker 2: To be confused with Bridgerton, that's a.
- 18:33Speaker 4: I think it's so old that this is attributed to
- 18:37Speaker 4: her and her writings called revelations.
- 18:40Speaker 2: The Bridgetine Revelations.
- 18:42Speaker 1: Right, But I mean again, there's a chance.
- 18:44Speaker 4: I always want to say that there's a chance if
- 18:45Speaker 4: you're a scholar out there, maybe you know a better
- 18:48Speaker 4: original source of this. But this is pretty widely attributed
- 18:50Speaker 4: to her. To write well and speak well is mere
- 18:54Speaker 4: vanity if one does not live.
- 18:56Speaker 2: Well, oh well, that's almost like first Qrientian's thirteen. It says,
- 19:00Speaker 2: if I, you know, sound like an angel, if I
- 19:02Speaker 2: sing like an angel, or if I can reveal all
- 19:05Speaker 2: mysteries but have not love, I'm nothing.
- 19:07Speaker 4: Yeah No, And it it gets me because I think
- 19:10Speaker 4: of my twenties, and I think about or even my
- 19:14Speaker 4: late teens when I first started songwriting and stuff, and
- 19:18Speaker 4: you just don't you just can't know what you haven't experienced.
- 19:23Speaker 4: And then, like I was thinking about, I mentioned it today,
- 19:26Speaker 4: there was a I wrote these three books. It was
- 19:29Speaker 4: really one book, and my first agent said, hey, bringing
- 19:33Speaker 4: you the thing that's on your heart. And I had
- 19:36Speaker 4: this thing called No Rivals and that's the name of
- 19:38Speaker 4: my company. By the way, is no rival to LC
- 19:40Speaker 4: that I write under. And it was this whole like basically,
- 19:46Speaker 4: I mean, it's more, way more than this. But how
- 19:48Speaker 4: like quantification robs us of the process. So if you
- 19:51Speaker 4: stop and everything's account, everything's about how much you make
- 19:54Speaker 4: or how many people you had or whatever.
- 19:56Speaker 2: Right or feeling like you're behind chronologically, Well, my friends
- 20:01Speaker 2: were eighteen when they had this experience, and I'm not
- 20:03Speaker 2: there yet. So now I feel like I've missed out right.
- 20:05Speaker 4: You haven't arrived and everyone else has. And it's a
- 20:09Speaker 4: great thing for your twenties. You begin to realize. I
- 20:11Speaker 4: was begin to realize, Oh, I think that if Johnny
- 20:13Speaker 4: and I got a record deal, then I'll be complete. Yeah, right,
- 20:18Speaker 4: and then you have enough things happened to you, whether
- 20:19Speaker 4: it's marriage, and I used to want to speak on it.
- 20:21Speaker 4: I would have like, Okay, I want to name a
- 20:23Speaker 4: few ages. You tell me the big thing that happens
- 20:27Speaker 4: at that age. Okay, you're born, Now what happens at five?
- 20:31Speaker 4: You're gonna go to kindergarten. What happens at twelve or
- 20:33Speaker 4: so where you're a teenager, you're gonna start middle school?
- 20:35Speaker 4: What happens at eighteen and they can always name it,
- 20:37Speaker 4: you're gonna graduate? What happens at twenty one? Oh, I
- 20:39Speaker 4: can drink now, I can do this. What happens? And
- 20:41Speaker 4: eventually then what happens in your thirties, your twenties, you
- 20:44Speaker 4: get married, your thirties, you striving kids or whatever. It's
- 20:46Speaker 4: like we can sum our lives up in like ten
- 20:50Speaker 4: or twelve things, and we've moved so fast through them,
- 20:53Speaker 4: trying to get.
- 20:54Speaker 1: To the next arrival point is what i'd call it.
- 20:56Speaker 4: That eventually you're like trying to slow those things down
- 20:58Speaker 4: because you're getting closer now to their a point of death,
- 21:01Speaker 4: so like you don't really live, you know, in that process.
- 21:04Speaker 4: And so anyway, I wrote it all and thought this
- 21:07Speaker 4: was I mean, for me, it was very it was
- 21:09Speaker 4: a proving ground of content that I really needed to
- 21:11Speaker 4: try to seek contentment and other things. Gave it to
- 21:13Speaker 4: the guy. It was so big, it was one hundred
- 21:16Speaker 4: and fifty thousand words. Yeah, and he was like, I
- 21:18Speaker 4: don't get it. You're dropped and like dropped me. He said,
- 21:24Speaker 4: good luck to you in the future. That's pretty close
- 21:28Speaker 4: and I.
- 21:28Speaker 2: Have dropped you.
- 21:29Speaker 4: Yeah you aren't. Yeah, and so but I remember thinking
- 21:33Speaker 4: this is to me. The writing was supposed to be
- 21:37Speaker 4: published like it was supposed to I wanted to write
- 21:39Speaker 4: well and speak well. I wanted to be these things
- 21:41Speaker 4: that I kind of had a little bit of talent
- 21:43Speaker 4: to do or a calling to do. And then as
- 21:46Speaker 4: life went on, which I never did publish that, so
- 21:48Speaker 4: I turned it into three books, and I think I
- 21:51Speaker 4: had almost had a deal with a denominational publisher. And
- 21:55Speaker 4: then the day basically I was getting the contract, a kid,
- 21:57Speaker 4: you not, was the day they shut down all of
- 21:59Speaker 4: their brick and mortar stores. Oh right, and they was like, hey,
- 22:04Speaker 4: all of our contracts are going to be put on hold.
- 22:05Speaker 4: So it never got made. And I look back now
- 22:08Speaker 4: and I'm kind of grateful because it's like, I don't
- 22:12Speaker 4: know if I knew how to live well, you know
- 22:13Speaker 4: what I'm saying. Like there was some good there were
- 22:15Speaker 4: some really cool things I wrote in there, but I
- 22:17Speaker 4: mean you look at it and go, what is a
- 22:19Speaker 4: twenty five year old really gonna teach me about living? Well,
- 22:22Speaker 4: because you can't until you've had some time. I'm still
- 22:24Speaker 4: not sure. Now I'm more I'm less.
- 22:26Speaker 1: Likely to think I could teach on that.
- 22:27Speaker 4: But I just think it's really telling that there's so
- 22:31Speaker 4: many things I don't even think about.
- 22:32Speaker 1: What you do.
- 22:34Speaker 4: You go back and listen to old jokes and stuff.
- 22:36Speaker 4: Now you've always had the talent for funny, but you're
- 22:39Speaker 4: so much more sharpened now to know exactly what how
- 22:42Speaker 4: you want your version of this to happen and what
- 22:45Speaker 4: you don't want to happen.
- 22:46Speaker 2: Yeah, sometimes you go back and I'll find like an
- 22:48Speaker 2: old joke that didn't really work, but I'll be like, well,
- 22:51Speaker 2: I'm a better comedian now, let me go look at
- 22:53Speaker 2: it again and see it hopefully through new eyes or whatever.
- 22:56Speaker 2: Sometimes you still can't get to work because it was
- 22:58Speaker 2: never a good idea, But every now and again you'll
- 22:59Speaker 2: be like, oh, there's something there, and now with more
- 23:02Speaker 2: confidence or more finesse, maybe I can do something with it.
- 23:06Speaker 2: If sometimes you can, Yeah, there's there's definitely a proving
- 23:10Speaker 2: ground on that stuff. But yeah, I mean, yeah, you
- 23:13Speaker 2: don't know what you don't know, And like everybody has
- 23:14Speaker 2: that whole analogy of like in church world, do we
- 23:17Speaker 2: have the couple that gets married six months later, they're
- 23:19Speaker 2: doing a marriage seminar. They're doing a book and a
- 23:21Speaker 2: fifty two week devotional on marriage. God's way, dude. They're like,
- 23:26Speaker 2: all right, dude, calm down.
- 23:27Speaker 1: Not one of my fighter moments that I can remember.
- 23:29Speaker 1: We had a I think it was Allison.
- 23:33Speaker 4: Who's been on the podcast before, was interning at Thomas
- 23:35Speaker 4: Nelson and she came to church one night and she
- 23:39Speaker 4: had the pre release version of The Bachelor.
- 23:42Speaker 1: One of the Bachelor guys got.
- 23:44Speaker 4: A book deal at the biggest Christian publisher in the world. Okay,
- 23:47Speaker 4: and I, of course I was doing a lot of
- 23:49Speaker 4: premratal counseling and stuff for a lot of young couples.
- 23:52Speaker 1: Then I was so mad and jealous.
- 23:54Speaker 2: Right because just because the platform, the fifteen minutes of fame,
- 23:56Speaker 2: now he gets a book deal.
- 23:57Speaker 4: I was like one in the world, like he is
- 24:00Speaker 4: not been married yet. Really, he's just now in this
- 24:03Speaker 4: and through a horrible process. In my opinion, that's you know,
- 24:06Speaker 4: I'm not saying you can't watch The Bachelor.
- 24:08Speaker 1: I'm just saying, do you.
- 24:09Speaker 4: It's not a traditional way, and he probably now in retrospect,
- 24:12Speaker 4: he probably had a writer writing great things in there
- 24:14Speaker 4: as well and taking his concepts and making them more grounded.
- 24:17Speaker 4: And that's a great publisher and they do great work,
- 24:18Speaker 4: you know. But I just I remember that feeling of
- 24:21Speaker 4: you haven't had a chance to live this, you know, Andrew,
- 24:24Speaker 4: we just had lunch with, you know, my pastor and
- 24:26Speaker 4: one of our dear friends, my boss. Like that dude,
- 24:30Speaker 4: the older he's gotten, he lives, he lives better. Yeah,
- 24:33Speaker 4: And that's kind of like I look at him and go,
- 24:35Speaker 4: he he's more honest, not more closed off.
- 24:39Speaker 1: He's more likely to help others, not less.
- 24:42Speaker 2: It's more vulnerable, yeah, more likely to laugh, more likely
- 24:45Speaker 2: to cry. Yeah, he's he's not closed off. Some people
- 24:48Speaker 2: get really closed off and bitter. And it's not like
- 24:51Speaker 2: he hasn't anything happened to him. He's definitely got reasons.
- 24:54Speaker 2: Everybody's got a reason to be better. Yeah, you're right,
- 24:57Speaker 2: that's where you want to go. Yeah. I see people.
- 24:59Speaker 2: There's older people in my life that I've met and
- 25:01Speaker 2: I been mentored by a little bit on along the way.
- 25:03Speaker 2: And some people I don't know like have to do
- 25:04Speaker 2: relationship with. But I see him and you just go like,
- 25:07Speaker 2: there's one guy that was like an early Christian pioneer
- 25:12Speaker 2: of like comedy. He was in a group called Isaac
- 25:14Speaker 2: Airfred in California and they would do sketch comedy. They
- 25:16Speaker 2: were kind of like a Monty pythonish And anyway, he
- 25:22Speaker 2: went on to produce like David Letterman shows, and he
- 25:25Speaker 2: produced The Prices Right for a while, and he did
- 25:26Speaker 2: all these other things. But when I would see him
- 25:29Speaker 2: speak at like Christian Comedy Association, he would speak to
- 25:31Speaker 2: the group and he just did not have a tinge
- 25:34Speaker 2: of because he could have easily been like that, you
- 25:35Speaker 2: guys are all here because I started this thing and
- 25:37Speaker 2: made fifty bucks a night, and there was just none
- 25:40Speaker 2: of that. He still loved God, he still loved his wife,
- 25:43Speaker 2: he still loved the church. He was happy that everybody
- 25:46Speaker 2: was like benefiting from what he had laid the groundwork for.
- 25:50Speaker 2: I was like, I want to thirty years from now
- 25:52Speaker 2: when I'm ready to walk away. I hope I'm more
- 25:54Speaker 2: like that than I am, you know now.
- 25:58Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely I don't want too. And I think it.
- 26:01Speaker 1: I see the old curmudgeon temptation.
- 26:05Speaker 2: Sure, I see it's just easy yeah.
- 26:08Speaker 1: To like, okay, to see through everything right.
- 26:10Speaker 2: And it's like shorting the stock You ever see people
- 26:13Speaker 2: who like because now it's a big thing in the
- 26:14Speaker 2: stock market. You go, you bet on a company to fail. Yeah,
- 26:17Speaker 2: you're rooting for it to fail.
- 26:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 26:20Speaker 2: And so it's like we have a whole generation of
- 26:23Speaker 2: people who are like betting against their own relationships because
- 26:26Speaker 2: they're like, I'll prove myself right, Yeah, But meanwhile, you're
- 26:29Speaker 2: sabotaging the relationship by betting against it with your attitude
- 26:32Speaker 2: every day. Yeah, you're doubling down on this short and
- 26:35Speaker 2: then when your marriage in you go, I knew it. Yeah,
- 26:38Speaker 2: she must have not been the one. You're like, dude,
- 26:40Speaker 2: you've been shorting this for twenty years.
- 26:41Speaker 4: No, you're right, I mean, and I'd say it all
- 26:44Speaker 4: the time in my house, Like, you know, you will
- 26:47Speaker 4: find what you spend your time looking for to some extent.
- 26:50Speaker 4: And if you're always looking for the negative or you're
- 26:52Speaker 4: always looking for something like, you will self fulfill We
- 26:57Speaker 4: all will, you know.
- 26:58Speaker 1: And I think the hard part life is.
- 27:02Speaker 4: My definition of hope, right, And Reggie and I are
- 27:04Speaker 4: starting to write on some of this, just that it's
- 27:07Speaker 4: looking for the good, always looking for the good that
- 27:09Speaker 4: is to come. I mean, whenever I'm in can I
- 27:12Speaker 4: one by faith is believing that good exists even though
- 27:15Speaker 4: I can't see it. Hope is actively moving my attitude
- 27:20Speaker 4: towards a place of expectancy of I'm going to keep
- 27:22Speaker 4: looking for it in wonder how long it takes believing
- 27:25Speaker 4: that good is ahead. And then I think maturity in
- 27:29Speaker 4: Christ is learning to allow God to define that good
- 27:35Speaker 4: and not just your expectations of the current circumstance. And
- 27:38Speaker 4: that's the hard part, right, learning to look for the
- 27:41Speaker 4: good in God, his nearness or the little things that
- 27:46Speaker 4: He does in the middle of a crisis to still
- 27:49Speaker 4: bring a moment of relief. I mean, you know, I
- 27:51Speaker 4: think you begin to hopefully look beyond just the big
- 27:55Speaker 4: outcome and see the sustaining moments of it. Listened to
- 28:00Speaker 4: asalng twenty three song by Shane and Shane and some
- 28:03Speaker 4: of my favorites, and just really hit me that surely goodness,
- 28:07Speaker 4: surely mercy ride beside me all my days, and like
- 28:11Speaker 4: just that idea that there's an expectancy in David's words
- 28:14Speaker 4: about there is a goodness inherently because I'm following the
- 28:18Speaker 4: shepherd that's there even though I'm walking through a valley
- 28:23Speaker 4: that's full of death. And even though the enemies surround me,
- 28:27Speaker 4: and there's a shepherd wrote a book about that they
- 28:30Speaker 4: would call the table was this elevated part of where
- 28:34Speaker 4: the land was. So if the sheep in the valley
- 28:37Speaker 4: that you know, you go to the you'd be at
- 28:40Speaker 4: the table. If it pairs a table before me could
- 28:43Speaker 4: mean something for the shepherd and the sheep, not just
- 28:45Speaker 4: for an actual table, meaning like where that table was,
- 28:48Speaker 4: where they would be would be lower and elevated around them.
- 28:52Speaker 4: The predators could be watching them as they ate or whatever,
- 28:55Speaker 4: but they would eat in peace because they knew.
- 28:58Speaker 1: The shepherd knew that the predators were there. He was
- 29:00Speaker 1: watching more than the predators were.
- 29:02Speaker 4: And so so you're not just pray like, you're also protected.
- 29:05Speaker 1: And I just think looking for that goods hard to do,
- 29:09Speaker 1: you know, and.
- 29:11Speaker 4: I don't do it well every day, but you will
- 29:14Speaker 4: find to some extent what it is you look for.
- 29:17Speaker 1: So yeah, Bridget of Sweden.
- 29:20Speaker 2: Bridget, she knew what she was talking about.
- 29:22Speaker 4: I want to say her name is also written says
- 29:26Speaker 4: Saint Burgita of Sweden. Okay, so that's the Swedish spelling. No,
- 29:32Speaker 4: I don't speak Swedish per se.
- 29:34Speaker 2: No, I mean the Swedish chef, right, come on, yeah,
- 29:40Speaker 2: let me be the one that gets the emails. John,
- 29:42Speaker 2: Where would you send an email for the show?

- 30:01Speaker 2: We love our patron. John. Let's do my segments. Let's
- 30:04Speaker 2: start with old jokes. We call a joke about that John.
- 30:12Speaker 2: A guy walks into a bar with a sad look
- 30:14Speaker 2: on his face. The regular sees him and says, hey,
- 30:17Speaker 2: you're doing all right? I'm doing terrible, says the guy.
- 30:19Speaker 2: I'm having money troubles. The only option I got left
- 30:22Speaker 2: is to sell my beloved dog. So I'm just traveling
- 30:24Speaker 2: around town asking anyone that wants to buy him off me.
- 30:27Speaker 2: He's in the car now. I'm sorry to hear that,
- 30:29Speaker 2: says the regular. What are you asking for him? Five
- 30:31Speaker 2: hundred dollars? The man says, well, that's a lot of
- 30:33Speaker 2: money for a dog. Well, it's like a dog is
- 30:37Speaker 2: like a part of my family. He's the gentalist, sweetest
- 30:39Speaker 2: dog you've ever seen. He never barks unless there's an intruder,
- 30:41Speaker 2: in which case he turns into the meanest mutt that
- 30:44Speaker 2: ever lived. And when he needs to go, he just
- 30:46Speaker 2: nudgs your leg once or twice, and then he'll sit
- 30:48Speaker 2: by the door and wait till you're ready to let
- 30:50Speaker 2: him out. My kids and wife love him and are
- 30:51Speaker 2: gonna hate me for selling him, but I just don't
- 30:53Speaker 2: have any other options. At this point, the regular says, well, geez,
- 30:56Speaker 2: if the dog is that in it, I'll take him.
- 30:58Speaker 2: I'd be happy to help you out. A year later,
- 30:59Speaker 2: the walks into the bar again. This time the regular's
- 31:02Speaker 2: there again, but he screams, you you sold me that
- 31:05Speaker 2: good for nothing dog. He does everything. He poops all
- 31:08Speaker 2: over the house, he barks constantly. He tries to bite
- 31:12Speaker 2: my wife and kids every chance he gets. I swear
- 31:15Speaker 2: the day I bought that dog was the last good
- 31:17Speaker 2: day I've had. The man looks at the regular, smile
- 31:19Speaker 2: and says, mister, you're never ever going to sell that dog.
- 31:22Speaker 2: If you keep talking about him like that.
- 31:27Speaker 1: Nice.
- 31:27Speaker 2: It's a joke about lying really if you think about it. Finally,
- 31:31Speaker 2: I wanted to do a joke from our friend Taylor Wimson.
- 31:33Speaker 2: Taylor Williamson is a great comic out of LA. I
- 31:35Speaker 2: met him when I was filling my second dry bar.
- 31:38Speaker 2: He was doing his dry bar that night, and he's
- 31:41Speaker 2: so great. He won, well, he came in second on AGT.
- 31:44Speaker 2: I think he won because the team that beat him
- 31:46Speaker 2: was a Japanese dog act on America's Got Talent, which
- 31:51Speaker 2: he does talk about in his shops. Yeah, but that
- 31:53Speaker 2: happens a lot. You know, they don't ever realize a
- 31:56Speaker 2: comedian fully win. They'll make you a finalist. But anyway,
- 31:58Speaker 2: Taylor's so good and he has one He has one
- 32:01Speaker 2: great joke. This was his opener on the drive Bar.
- 32:03Speaker 2: He said, you know, you really go to shoot for
- 32:05Speaker 2: your dreams. You got to just stay positive. It's all
- 32:07Speaker 2: about perspective. When I started doing comedy ten years ago,
- 32:10Speaker 2: I had nothing. I had no prospects. I was really
- 32:12Speaker 2: struggling to pay my rent. And now just ten years later,
- 32:15Speaker 2: I'm a more respected comedian than Bill Cosby. So that's Taylor.
- 32:22Speaker 2: So this is a joke that Taylor wrote, and we'll
- 32:24Speaker 2: wrap up a joke about that with this one. He said,
- 32:27Speaker 2: I drove by a guy with a sign that said hungry,
- 32:30Speaker 2: so I gave him my sandwich. I felt really good
- 32:32Speaker 2: about myself until I got home and I remember why
- 32:35Speaker 2: I bought my sandwich. I'm not proud of this, but
- 32:38Speaker 2: I drove back to the guy and I said, listen,
- 32:41Speaker 2: I'm really sorry, but I'm gonna need that sign. I
- 32:46Speaker 2: just think that's such a funny. I think that's great.
- 32:48Speaker 2: Taylor's great. You follow him on follow him on Instagram
- 32:51Speaker 2: at at Taylor Comedy at Taylor Comedy. John. Let's wrap
- 32:56Speaker 2: it up with this week in history. We call it
- 32:57Speaker 2: talk about then do do dom John? Pope Clement the
- 33:07Speaker 2: eighth was born this week fifteen thirty six, and the
- 33:12Speaker 2: reason he makes the list is because he popularized quote
- 33:15Speaker 2: Satan's drink. Do you want to guess what Satan's drink is?
- 33:18Speaker 1: Coffee?
- 33:19Speaker 2: Yes? Italian religious leader two hundred and thirty first Pope
- 33:23Speaker 2: from fifteen ninety two to sixteen oh five. He declared,
- 33:26Speaker 2: did Pope Clement, this Satan's drink is so delicious that
- 33:31Speaker 2: it would be a pity to let the infidels have
- 33:33Speaker 2: exclusive use of it. That's almost like who was the
- 33:36Speaker 2: guy that said, why should the devil have all the
- 33:38Speaker 2: good music? Because now we started making our own rock
- 33:40Speaker 2: and roll music in Christian culture, And that was the
- 33:43Speaker 2: sentiment being, why should the devil have all the good music?
- 33:46Speaker 2: You know, God made all music. Why are we letting
- 33:48Speaker 2: them have all the electric guitars? So here was Pope
- 33:50Speaker 2: Clement saying, hey, these infidels are having some fun with
- 33:53Speaker 2: this coffee.
- 33:54Speaker 1: Let's get a hawk up ourselves.
- 33:56Speaker 2: Come on, man, what's better than a revitalized flock?
- 34:01Speaker 1: Uh?
- 34:02Speaker 2: You like that? He uh? He's responsible for the popularity
- 34:07Speaker 2: of coffee use among Catholics. Coffee was used previously, or
- 34:12Speaker 2: coffee use was previously discouraged because it was believed to
- 34:14Speaker 2: be the quote bitter invention of Satan due to its
- 34:17Speaker 2: use among Muslims. I didn't know that, so they thought
- 34:20Speaker 2: of it as a Muslim drink. And then these Catholics
- 34:22Speaker 2: were like, they got something over here. Yeah, they're streaming
- 34:25Speaker 2: hot water through veins and it's pretty good. Have a
- 34:29Speaker 2: sipp and well, let me know what you think. It's
- 34:31Speaker 2: just like, yeah, crusades, that's my that's my pope cleming impression.
- 34:36Speaker 2: And I defy you, I defy you to find a
- 34:39Speaker 2: better pope cleming impression than that one.
- 34:42Speaker 1: It's everybody has a pope clem impression yours.
- 34:45Speaker 2: I like to think that people when they do a
- 34:47Speaker 2: pope clement, they're just doing my pope claim.
- 34:49Speaker 1: Well, right, They're just like, there's only one really, Yeah.
- 34:52Speaker 2: It's a little Dennis Miller chip chip chip chip pip
- 34:55Speaker 2: okay John this week, UH February twenty, eighteen thirty seven.
- 35:01Speaker 2: The first practical electric motor is patented by Thomas Davenport.
- 35:06Speaker 2: This was the first US patent for an electric machine
- 35:09Speaker 2: eighteen thirty seven, Patent number one thirty two. That's when
- 35:12Speaker 2: you know it's an old when it's patent number one
- 35:14Speaker 2: thirty two.
- 35:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 35:16Speaker 2: He used silk from his wife's wedding dress for insulation
- 35:19Speaker 2: for the wiring. Davenport was unable, however, to capitalize on
- 35:23Speaker 2: his inmension and died broke. There's a lot of those guys.
- 35:25Speaker 2: That's why he makes the list because it's kind of sad.
- 35:27Speaker 2: It's one of those like you make this thing that's
- 35:29Speaker 2: gonna end up changing the world, but you don't quite
- 35:32Speaker 2: ever get to see it.
- 35:33Speaker 1: Yeah, and maybe that's like our podcast.
- 35:36Speaker 2: Yeah. I think when we're gone, they're gonna be like
- 35:38Speaker 2: those guys really were on they got it.
- 35:40Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 35:40Speaker 2: They probably made about three hundred too many, like we
- 35:44Speaker 2: get it after one hundred, but man uh And I
- 35:48Speaker 2: also use silk from my wife's wedding dress for this
- 35:50Speaker 2: podcast's no yeah, for insulation. It's in my it's inside
- 35:55Speaker 2: my hoodie right now in a weird way. John This
- 35:58Speaker 2: Week nineteen eighty one, a nine year old bank robber
- 36:04Speaker 2: robbed a New York bank at gunpoint. Okay, he got
- 36:07Speaker 2: away with one hundred and eighteen dollars, but later surrendered
- 36:10Speaker 2: to the FBI. This made me look up this story
- 36:11Speaker 2: because that's all it had, So I looked it up
- 36:13Speaker 2: to see what happened and what's the story. Nineteen eighty one,
- 36:17Speaker 2: nine year old boy named Robert. Doesn't say his full
- 36:19Speaker 2: name because it's probably sealed. He surrendered after using a
- 36:23Speaker 2: toy gun to rob a Manhattan bank. Quotes on rob
- 36:27Speaker 2: a case his lawyer argued was influenced by television crime shows.
- 36:32Speaker 2: The New York Times reported the child was charged with
- 36:34Speaker 2: armed robbery and weapon possession in family court, the boy,
- 36:38Speaker 2: described as four foot five inches tall, walked into New
- 36:41Speaker 2: York bank and demanded money. The weapon used was a
- 36:46Speaker 2: toy gun. His lawyer, mel A Sachs, argued that the
- 36:50Speaker 2: child did not have true criminal intent, but instead was
- 36:53Speaker 2: imitating behavior you saw on television shows like Adam twelve
- 36:55Speaker 2: in The Rockford Files. The case was handling and family
- 36:58Speaker 2: court were Penalties for such acts typically involved probation or
- 37:01Speaker 2: an extreme cases, confinement and a juvenile treatment facility. It
- 37:04Speaker 2: does not say what happened to the boy. That's what
- 37:06Speaker 2: I was really looking for, is like what did he get?
- 37:08Speaker 2: I think it all got sealed and maybe it was
- 37:10Speaker 2: just like one of those like all right, he was
- 37:12Speaker 2: just being a knucklehead and no harm, no foul. He
- 37:14Speaker 2: could never really hurt anybody, was a toy gun, right,
- 37:17Speaker 2: So what do you think about that? What if Sadie
- 37:19Speaker 2: had done something like that when she was nine? Would
- 37:20Speaker 2: you be like, I'll be a little upset. Yeah, it's embarrassing,
- 37:26Speaker 2: you know, to make the paper. You're like, what kind
- 37:29Speaker 2: where are the parents?
- 37:31Speaker 1: Like I'm right here? Yeah, yeah, I mean I don't know.
- 37:34Speaker 2: It was my idea, I said one hundred and eighteen dollars?
- 37:36Speaker 2: Are you kidding me? If they didn't even pay the mortgage.
- 37:40Speaker 1: I wonder why they only gave him one hundred and
- 37:42Speaker 1: eighteen dollars.
- 37:43Speaker 2: I don't know, but this was did they know day one?
- 37:46Speaker 2: So yeah, I mean this is.
- 37:47Speaker 1: I think I would have been like, but why give
- 37:49Speaker 1: him anything at all?
- 37:51Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 37:52Speaker 1: Yeah, maybe maybe maybe it was like that. Maybe it
- 37:55Speaker 1: was like one of those pellet guns that looks kind
- 37:56Speaker 1: of real.
- 37:57Speaker 2: You know, this is before they started putting the orange,
- 37:59Speaker 2: so it probably did look really really.
- 38:00Speaker 1: You know, this is before that you ever had that
- 38:01Speaker 1: pelagun that looked like a magnum p.
- 38:03Speaker 2: I my mom would let me have guns. We were
- 38:06Speaker 2: my mom was terrified of guns. Yeah yeah, we never
- 38:09Speaker 2: had BB guns. We were in a very nerve household.
- 38:11Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, I had BB guns and we have.
- 38:15Speaker 2: Were very you'll put your eye out kind of household.
- 38:18Speaker 1: Yeah. Probably almost did out a few times. I think
- 38:20Speaker 1: I got hit right here in the cheek mo one
- 38:22Speaker 1: time with a pelican with a BB gun. Yeah, would
- 38:25Speaker 1: have been bad.
- 38:25Speaker 2: But yeah when I yeah, man, there's.
- 38:29Speaker 1: Also bottle rockets explode up on my face too.
- 38:31Speaker 2: What we didn't so my mom was right is what
- 38:34Speaker 2: we're saying.
- 38:34Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I lived through it, and a.
- 38:37Speaker 2: Lot of people don't. Did the people around you, did
- 38:40Speaker 2: they have a John Driver story?
- 38:42Speaker 1: How like in Roman candle wars and stuff.
- 38:44Speaker 2: You shot Roman candles at other people?
- 38:46Speaker 4: They we did stuff and I was there fireballs John
- 38:50Speaker 4: they are and yeah.
- 38:52Speaker 2: Just like from ancient Rome, if you remember, that's how
- 38:56Speaker 2: they fought the wars the Roman. Where did they come
- 39:00Speaker 2: up with that? The Roman candle?
- 39:02Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 39:03Speaker 2: It is interesting.
- 39:03Speaker 4: I wonder it maybe it was actually made in Rome,
- 39:05Speaker 4: not like I don't know. They had fireworks in ancient times.
- 39:09Speaker 2: Yeah, Chinese, ancient Chinese fireworks as possible gunpowder was all.
- 39:12Speaker 1: There's no way to know.
- 39:13Speaker 2: So, yeah, because we used that's the thing was that
- 39:15Speaker 2: was gunpowder used for fireworks before it became a weapon weaponized.
- 39:18Speaker 2: I think it was.
- 39:19Speaker 1: I think it was like they probably didn't call it that.
- 39:21Speaker 2: Yeah, somebody figured out, oh, we can use this to
- 39:23Speaker 2: dominate other civilizations and win wars, kill people really more efficiently.
- 39:28Speaker 1: Yeah, it was a great equalizers.
- 39:29Speaker 2: They were just celebrating with them, look at all the
- 39:31Speaker 2: fire in the sky, and then they're like, hold on,
- 39:33Speaker 2: I got an idea we should wipe out people.
- 39:35Speaker 4: Yeah, there was a time when the size and skill
- 39:39Speaker 4: of the fighter mattered more and then all of a sudden,
- 39:42Speaker 4: anybody with a gun could win a fight.
- 39:46Speaker 1: So and guys, isn't that just like our lives?
- 39:48Speaker 2: Yeah? Somehow I don't like it. I don't like it
- 39:51Speaker 2: one bit. John. Finally, this week in seventeen fifty one,
- 39:55Speaker 2: the first performing monkey in the US. That's right, John,
- 40:00Speaker 2: in New York City. Man charged a shilling to watch
- 40:05Speaker 2: a two foot tall monkey walk a tightrope and dance.
- 40:08Speaker 2: Have you ever seen What do you think about animal shows?
- 40:10Speaker 2: Because some people like they frowned. You know, it's like,
- 40:11Speaker 2: now we know more about them. Elephants aren't really in
- 40:14Speaker 2: the circus anymore. Necessarily, there's a lot of Is it
- 40:17Speaker 2: a big deal for a monkey to walk a tight rope?
- 40:20Speaker 2: Was he being starved? Was he being coerced walked tight rope?
- 40:23Speaker 2: Was the wire electrified? We don't know what's going on.
- 40:26Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 40:26Speaker 1: I need more information.
- 40:27Speaker 4: I don't think it's a very impressive trick, and you
- 40:29Speaker 4: should get your shilling back.
- 40:30Speaker 1: Number one.
- 40:30Speaker 2: But number two, how much was a shilling?
- 40:32Speaker 1: Was that worth a halfpence?
- 40:38Speaker 2: But it reminded me. I was in Gallenburg one time
- 40:41Speaker 2: and I think I told you this and you didn't
- 40:42Speaker 2: believe me. And I literally found a photo of it today,
- 40:44Speaker 2: so it's real. We'll put it on the we'll put
- 40:46Speaker 2: it on the video, okay. But I was in Gallenburg
- 40:48Speaker 2: walking around downtown. You know Callmburg's just a haven for weird's. Yeah,
- 40:52Speaker 2: you know, there's sweet shops and there's the saltwater Taffic
- 40:56Speaker 2: and then you go to some weird tourist trap thing
- 40:58Speaker 2: and there's the Ripleys. Believe it or not, you don't
- 41:00Speaker 2: know what you're there street performers every now and again. Yeah,
- 41:02Speaker 2: and it was just random starving people. And that's what
- 41:04Speaker 2: this was. It was a guy, he had a cup,
- 41:06Speaker 2: he was begging for money, but he had a dog.
- 41:10Speaker 2: On the dog's back was a cat, and on the
- 41:13Speaker 2: cat's back was a rat. They were stacked up. It's
- 41:19Speaker 2: they were just dottack and they were just coming down
- 41:23Speaker 2: the street. And I thought, nobody's gonna believe this story.
- 41:26Speaker 2: And I've carried that memory with me and it's a
- 41:28Speaker 2: core memory picture. And so today I didn't have a camp.
- 41:31Speaker 2: This was pre phone cameras. It was like the eighties,
- 41:33Speaker 2: but I looked it up. There's a whole Reddit thread
- 41:35Speaker 2: about it. The old dog cat They said, what's sad is?
- 41:38Speaker 2: They said that he sedates the cat and the rat.
- 41:42Speaker 2: But the dog was normal. The dogs just like, sure,
- 41:45Speaker 2: right on my back, fine, let's do it. But the cat.
- 41:49Speaker 1: How would they have the information to know that.
- 41:50Speaker 2: I think that somebody said, we've talked to him, you know,
- 41:53Speaker 2: back in the day. Oh, I have to drug the
- 41:58Speaker 2: other animals. But the dog's cool.
- 42:00Speaker 1: Maybe the dog, maybe the cat in rats life is better?
- 42:04Speaker 2: Well, I think drug. The idea of it's the idea
- 42:07Speaker 2: of it sounds so cool. And we love those nature
- 42:08Speaker 2: videos where it's like a duck and a horse are
- 42:10Speaker 2: best friends, so like we're really primed for that whole height.
- 42:12Speaker 2: There's a symbiosis in nature and humans have come in
- 42:15Speaker 2: and messed it all up, but really animals want to
- 42:17Speaker 2: be friends. So it makes you believe in that weird
- 42:20Speaker 2: utopia of like there's a rat riding on a cat
- 42:24Speaker 2: riding on a dog, Are you kidding me? That means
- 42:26Speaker 2: we can all get along. And what it means is
- 42:29Speaker 2: there's a heavy we all drunk each other. We can
- 42:33Speaker 2: ride on each other's back freedom.
- 42:35Speaker 1: I don't know, it's right there.
- 42:37Speaker 2: We can all live in a utopia. Yeah, I'm sorry
- 42:40Speaker 2: about that, but it's real. I was not imagining it
- 42:43Speaker 2: because there's photos of it. But did you think you
- 42:45Speaker 2: were drugged for a while like that? I thought maybe. Yeah, Well,
- 42:48Speaker 2: it's just one of those things you try to tell
- 42:49Speaker 2: people and they go, sure.
- 42:50Speaker 1: You look over and there's a rat on your back.
- 42:52Speaker 2: Yeah, like on top of it.
- 42:54Speaker 1: Yeah, where did I get this?
