- 0:01Speaker 1: I'm sitting here in Nice at the seventy point three world championships, and I've been doing a lot of thinking since getting here about high performance and specifically how people reach a goal through high performance that once seemed impossible. You see, I've been a coach in triathlon now for over four years, and I've noticed patterns of working with enough athletes that separates the people who get to a goal they once believed was impossible and those who actually don't make it. What And I wanna do on this podcast is talk about the habits that drive high performance and how anyone can get to where they want to be or where they would like to be once we break through some limiting beliefs. You see, it's easy to think that it's just swim, bike, and run. That needs to be improved, and then we can get better results.
- 0:47But a lot of time, it's actually stuff outside of that. And this is what we're going to be looking into as well. So a lot of people think that the difference between six hour seventy point three and a five hour seventy point three is the perfect interval session or the perfect threshold below to the race. But it's actually what happens around the other twenty two hours of the day. See, what we can tend to do is forget about the other things that need to happen.
- 1:14For example, when you finish your training session, how long do you leave it before you refuel? Do you already have the nutrition laid out when you go home? Do you know what you're gonna eat when you're finished your trio ride? Is your kit already laid out? Do you know what's on tomorrow's training session?
- 1:33The difference is is that when we can organize things and be intentional around our time, that's when we will see a lot of these results. Because we are all very busy individuals. We all have high performing jobs that require us to use a lot of energy. So work, family commitments, everything else going on. And then on top of that, we need to get our training sessions in.
- 1:58This is a very difficult thing to do, especially in the early days of trying to fit everything in, and it can definitely feel very pressuring. But high performers remove a friction before it has a chance to even become an excuse. Let me say it again. High performers remove friction before it even has a chance to become an excuse. Be super intentional with your time, plan what you're going to do, and you will be able to do more and achieve better results.
- 2:28I wanna give an example now and talk about one of my clients, Ria. Ria has been one of my one to one clients for over two years. What we have achieved in them two years is absolutely incredible. And the perfect example of this is because of how Ria has structured and went about her time. The Ria is a full time lawyer.
- 2:48Her work is extremely busy and extremely stressful. She's also moving house recently and life is super busy. But whenever I open China peaks, I will 99% of the time see everything green. It's not that Rhea is more motivated than everyone else. Okay?
- 3:08But Rhea doesn't wake up in the morning magically being motivated. She's just incredibly intentional about what she's going to do. She protects her time. She plans in advance. She communicates when something needs to be moved, and training isn't something that she just squeezes in whenever she has the time left to do it.
- 3:28And I think what allows this to happen is number one, standards. Being able to hold yourself to a high standard to know that you can move things around or you can sacrifice something else or you can not stay up late doing god knows what, playing Xbox, watching Netflix, watching your latest soaps. Rhea is in bed getting her eight hours of sleep so that she has enough energy the next morning to not only get her session done, but to also go about her demanding day and her job that she needs to do. Number two is her attitude. If we can remain remain positive in difficult situations and actually just smile, you would not believe how much of a difference that can make.
- 4:12If like, me give you this example. If you are constantly annoyed, just frustrated, carrying out your mood and energy to other people in work, that's gonna have a negative impact on on your energy, on your day to day, and everything else that goes on. But carrying a positive attitude will help you day to day as well. It will help you through them tough patches. Just say, you know what?
- 4:36Everything's gonna be okay. When you wake up in the morning, do five minutes of journaling and say how good your day is gonna be, And this can make a transition to how you're feeling and ultimately make your day better before it even begins. Number three is which ultimately fits into number one, being intentional with your time. But having structure, having your Google Calendar all laid out is just gonna set you up for success. Ever since I started using Google Calendar and stopped writing notes down, it has transformed my entire life.
- 5:05It has allowed me to get more work done in one day than I used to do in three days. So Rhea follows this approach as well and being intentional with her time allows her to get more done. I genuinely believe that high performance bleeds into everything. So as I mentioned, performance and work. The person who consistently prepares properly for training isn't suddenly becoming a different person when they walk into work.
- 5:29The trade transfers, so organization, reliability, preparation, doing what you said you were going to do and being proactive rather than reactive. And, looking at Ironman and seventy point three, these transfer over because high high performance isn't something you can just switch on when you put your running shows on. The clients I work with who have busy jobs are always on the go, whether that be paramedics, that be nurses, whether that be CEOs. They carry themselves work with the same attitude that carry himself in in training. They bring they go to attitude.
- 6:09They're intentional of what they want to do. They're not leaving everything last minute, whether that be meetings in work, preparation when it comes to being on time. It's just done. There's no questions asked about it. So if we can get into a habit of doing this, it's going to massively change your actual and have a look on what you're doing as well.
- 6:30Probably my favorite part of this episode or this podcast and the last few days, and that is that your environment changes your standards. So let's say, for example, your standards haven't been where they wanted to be. Look at your environment. Look at who you surround yourself with. What they're doing?
- 6:50Are they doing the same things that you're doing? Because if people think you're crazy for getting up at 5AM to go for a swim, it will feel like you are going crazy eventually. Well, if people around you are doing the same thing, it's just gonna feel normal. Being over here at the world championships in Nice, I'm looking at people and how they carry themselves and their routines and their preparations. And you can just tell that they are setting high standards.
- 7:17Well, they'd have to be to qualify for the watch. Have you just? Of course. But I know that by looking at them, they are doing well in life. And that might be a crazy statement to say, but their attitude, their aura, their energy, it just goes to show that when you carry yourself with this for long enough, it will shape you and shape your identity too.
- 7:39So if you have got a goal at the minute that feels a million miles away, whether it is your first Ironman, breaking sub five for 70.3, breaking sub 12 for an Ironman, maybe the question isn't, am I fit enough to do Look at the person who's capable of achieving that goal. How do they organize their week? Who do they surround themselves with? How do they fuel? How do they recover?
- 8:05What do they do when when work and life gets busy, and what standards do they hold themselves to? Then ask yourself, how many of those am I already doing? Because I'll tell you one thing. From four years of coaching, that's probably the biggest thing I've noticed. The best aren't doing one thing massively different.
- 8:25They just build a life where they're doing the right things consistently. Now it's just felt normal. Being a niece this week, surrounding myself with some of the best age group athletes in the world has probably reminded me of that more than anything. And this is actually a very interesting point as well and very reliable. But back as so my partner's dad came to spectate us at the half marathon that we've done.
- 8:55This half marathon is 7,000 participants. It's one of the biggest in Ireland or Northern Ireland as well. And ever since that, which was three weeks ago, he has been on the biggest fitness buzz of his life. He is training every day. Don't forget, Becca's dad is over 70.
- 9:13He's training every day. He is eating well. And that wasn't because he just got a sudden spark of motivation. His environment that day was full of high performers. It was full of people his age and above out doing a half marathon that he just thought was absolutely incredible.
- 9:31And since then, he has found the energy and the motivation and the will to do the same things. And he's actually on a flight over to meet us in Nice. So it's only gonna further from here being in the environment, seeing everyone else push themselves, and ultimately doing the same thing. So if this has hit home a little bit, maybe you've been feeling like you needed to raise your standards, or maybe you feel like you needed to give yourself a little bit more, don't worry because you're definitely not alone. And I've been there multiple times before I got a ride too.
- 10:03Just know that get the structure, get the accountability, and get the right people around you who are chasing the same things. That's exactly what we do inside Explosive Endurance. We want to be able to work with people who want to change things around, who want to achieve a goal that once seemed impossible and work towards that higher in their standards and become a high performer. So if this is something that you would like help with, drop me a message and let's have a chat about where you're at and where you would like to go.
