- 2:34SPEAKER_00: Hey Daniel, welcome to the show.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: I'm super excited to have you here to talk about email marketing.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: But before we jump into that, uh first I'd like to get to know you a little better so our audience knows exactly who we're talking to and the level of expertise you have in this area.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: So, what are some of the experiences or influence that shaped your perspective on retention marketing?
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: And how did you draw how did that drive you to become a thought leader in the e-commerce space?
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, thank you, Will.
- 3:03SPEAKER_01: And I'm really excited to be here and talk about these really great topics today.
- 3:08SPEAKER_01: So I started my uh journey in marketing and and first of all, copywriting back around 2017, 2018.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: And believe it or not, I used to be a geologist before.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: So my uh past was really different.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: Um so I started as a copywriter and then uh and then email marketer, and then uh, you know, we just became more strategic.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: So nowadays we rather call it retention marketing.
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: So we manage SMS marketing as well, we manage loyalty programs, um, so all the nine yards.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: And uh in the past two years, AI I think really revolutionized how we do things, and uh I have to tell you that I think the the human aspect is still crucial, so it doesn't change the human psychology AI.
- 4:02SPEAKER_01: However, the implementation has changed a lot, and uh yeah, we we are gonna talk about it today, but um, yeah, I think in the past two years, AI was one of those things that really shaped not just email marketing, but online marketing and marketing in general and how we how we work as humans.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: Creed.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, how we work as humans for sure, and just like uh creativity almost, and a lot of that is all uh it's amazing the progress AI has made in such a short period of time.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: It's gonna be crazy what the next couple of years look like.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: But you were a geologist, so uh what prompted the transition from geology to to marketing?
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: That seems like uh a pretty drastic change in career.
- 4:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:47SPEAKER_01: So I wasn't uh a geologist for a long time.
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: So I finished my university studies around 20, uh 2016, and then uh I wanted to work in the oil industry, and actually that industry has ups and downs, and uh, you know, back then the oil prices were down, and I couldn't find a job, so I just looked around the internet.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: Okay, what could I do?
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: And I found this platform called Upwork, and I just started taking small gigs, and uh, you know, over time I just got bigger and bigger gigs, and then I just okay, what if I just become an entrepreneur?
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: Um, so you know it was step by step, yeah.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: And uh I didn't have big dreams about traveling to different continents, or actually, this summer we had uh 11 people visiting my country, so more than half of our team, and they came from four different continents.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: Wow, and uh we had crazy fun for four days, so you know, obviously I didn't dream about these things back then.
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: So so yeah, I I I'm really grateful that uh for marketing and that we can work online.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, the freedom of working online that's amazing.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: Uh Upwork Cowboy to agency owner, it's a it's uh it's quite the journey and very rewarding.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: Uh um Belovics uh is my agency, and it's uh it's a very rewarding period uh experience being able to not only service the brands that we service, but also to build a team around our ideology and our values.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: And I think that is something that isn't talked about a lot in entrepreneurship.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: So that is really cool.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: And before we dive in, so what what key insights have you gained from working with a wide range of e-commerce brands?
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: And how have these how have these insights shaped your leadership and vision for the future of Bidai, uh Bidai Media?
- 6:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, great question.
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: So in the past six years, we worked with actually this year we we hit 200 clients and we generated more than 100 million dollars mostly with email marketing.
- 7:01SPEAKER_01: And uh we really worked across all kinds of different industries you can think of.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: So most of them they are in fashion, beauty, skincare, home decor, but some of them are really exotic niches, like we saw 3D printers.
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: Now we have a client selling luxury saunas for$20,000.
- 7:21SPEAKER_01: So it's and we sell it with SMS marketing, so it's just it's just so exotic, you know.
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: Um, it's crazy.
- 7:29SPEAKER_01: And it really tells me that email marketing, sms marketing, it works, it works for almost all industries, so probably the most universal marketing uh channel because meta-ads, you cannot use it for everything, or or Google Ads.
- 7:44SPEAKER_01: I I think the same.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: So I think email marketing is is something that works for for really most uh industries.
- 7:52SPEAKER_01: Um, and the team is now around 20 people.
- 7:56SPEAKER_01: Actually, partly because of AI, we became a smaller team.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: So our largest size, biggest size was 31 people two years ago, and now we are 20.
- 8:08SPEAKER_01: So we became more efficient, and uh, you know, there are less junior people in the team, actually.
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: AI can really change that as well.
- 8:18SPEAKER_01: And um I, you know, I see my notes in front of me, and I really like this sentence everyone becomes a manager, and I think that's that's the number one about AI, that uh you you have this tool and you have to become a manager to some level, because you have this tool, you can use it, and everyone will use it, your competition will use it.
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: So you have to learn how to make uh prompts, how to filter uh filter information, um, how to do research using AI, all of that.
- 8:54SPEAKER_01: You want to know what's your objective, you but you must be really clear about it, you have to have clarity, otherwise, AI will just scale up shit, as I say.
- 9:05SPEAKER_01: So yeah, you just get a huge volume of worthless things, and yeah, AI can also do that.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: Well said, I love that insight too.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: Uh, everyone is a manager now, and that is uh I've actually never heard that before, Daniel.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: That is truly insightful, and it's absolutely true.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: And it actually gets me more excited to jump into our main topic: maximizing e-commerce growth with AI, boost revenue and retention.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: So, on that note, let's dive into the main topic.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: I don't think I can hold on anymore.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: So, to start things off, can you give a give us a basic overview of how AI is transforming email marketing?
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: Specifically, how does it impact key metrics like customer retention, lifetime value, and overall sales for e-commerce brands?
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so let's dive into this.
- 9:52SPEAKER_01: So uh, as I said, I think the human psychology is still the same, and it's been the same for millions of years or you know, for a long time.
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: So AI doesn't change that.
- 10:03SPEAKER_01: I think we still need smart humans to come up with the strategy.
- 10:07SPEAKER_01: That being said, it really helps us with implementation.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: And I like uh splitting this topic up to two categories.
- 10:17SPEAKER_01: One is the creative, how we can come up with better creatives, and the other one is data and pattern recognition, how we can use it to interpret data smarter and more efficiently.
- 10:29SPEAKER_01: So when it comes to creatives, uh we use it for copywriting.
- 10:34SPEAKER_01: And I think tools, even like ChatGPT, um, the most popular AI tool, it really revolutionized uh copywriting in the past two years.
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: And just to telling, you know, just one stat.
- 10:49SPEAKER_01: So our copywriter team is uh it's half the size as it was two years ago.
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: So it really changed the industry and and people they have to adapt to it.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: Um, how we use Chat GPT for uh copywriting, um, research.
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: So actually, most uh the most amount of work in copywriting is not the writing part but research, and uh that's the most important part of a good copy, I think the research part.
- 11:21SPEAKER_01: You you do your homework, you do very deep research about your audience and and their pains and and their headaches.
- 11:29SPEAKER_01: And chat GPT can help you a lot.
- 11:32SPEAKER_01: Um, actually, now I talk to ChatGPT every day, like a half an hour, about different topics.
- 11:40SPEAKER_01: Like today, I when I was having my lunch, I talked to GPT about uh the most relevant uh wine grapes.
- 11:49SPEAKER_01: Uh so and and it's just crazy, you don't have to Google things, and uh, I can see young people now they rather talk to GPT on their phones instead of using Google.
- 12:01SPEAKER_01: So um, and then summarizing content, it's really good to summarize content.
- 12:07SPEAKER_01: One example I really like, so you can upload your customer reviews and uh you can ask GPT to build a customer avatar based on those reviews.
- 12:19SPEAKER_01: Wow, so we we use it for most of our clients now, and you can come up with different avatars as well, and you can ask GPT to make it more real.
- 12:30SPEAKER_01: So let's create an image about this person, let's give a real name, what's her dog's name, or you know, it's it's very realistic.
- 12:40SPEAKER_01: Um, you can come up with fake personalities, and what I mean by that, um so let's say you want to mimic the copywriting style of someone, let's say let's say a founder, e-commerce founder, and you are a ghostwriter, so you can just feed GPT with uh his or her previous writings, can upload it, and you can ask GPT to mimic that style, and it does a really good job.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: So that's just let me actually break that down.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: That's pretty interesting because it's important, obviously, that your creative resonates with your ideal customer profile.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: So, what you're saying, like a way that you're able to use AI through for creative specifically, the research takes the most time.
- 13:31SPEAKER_00: And what you're able to do essentially is kind of say, Hey, ChatGPT, this is my avatar.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: Maybe here's a couple LinkedIn profiles, here's some more information about my avatar.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: Uh, load that, and then you're able to kind of talk to it to be like, hey, help me write copy for an email that's gonna resonate with my avatar and their major concerns about selling product in the beauty space or or$20,000 saunas, and it's gonna actually spit back out copy that you'd be like, Oh, it's pretty good, or like, I guess what does the results look like?
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: And then how do you mold those results so you get something that will resonate with your customer, but also you could be proud of as an agency?
- 14:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so in general, the more information you provide, the better it becomes.
- 14:19SPEAKER_01: So, you know, if you go to ChatGPT, you ask to fake uh Elon Musk style, it will be really good.
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: Or uh, I I one of my friends did uh Andrew Tate, and he has a very distinctive style, yeah, how he speaks.
- 14:34SPEAKER_01: But uh most people they don't have that, so you have to give enough information to feed it, and it won't be perfect.
- 14:41SPEAKER_01: So I think that's why we still need humans to check the quality.
- 14:45SPEAKER_01: Um, but um many times you will be surprised by the results.
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: Um, so that's how we use it um for them.
- 14:55unknown: Yeah.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: Do you do any?
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: So you said creative and data summary are kind of the two verticals that you guys place your uh how you're using AI at the moment.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: Uh on the data side, how how are you doing that?
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: Like, what do you mean by it summarizes data, yes?
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: But how are you doing it as it relates to informing maybe your email campaigns or how well some of your AI creatives work?
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: Like, how does this work together and where does the data summarizing come in?
- 15:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 15:21SPEAKER_01: So actually, uh the most common email tool we use is called Clavio, that's very popular for e-commerce businesses.
- 15:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and uh there are a ton of inbuilt ways to use AI and Clavio.
- 15:37SPEAKER_01: Just a couple examples.
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: So, for example, you can see what's the best sending time of your emails, and uh, I think not Clavio, but there are email tools where it can be different for everyone, so everyone has their preferred sending time.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: Like I read my emails at 9 a.m., other people 6 p.m.
- 15:58SPEAKER_01: maybe.
- 15:58SPEAKER_01: So we receive the emails at different times, and uh clavio and these tools it they recognize that these patterns, and it would be it would be impossible to do it manually for 100,000 people.
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, impossible.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: Wow, so Clavio is smart enough that if if I'm in its database and it it knows my behaviors, it will automatically detect the best time to send me your email and it'll send it out.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, that is amazing.
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, or my other favorite is called predictive analytics, and it can predict uh different things.
- 16:35SPEAKER_01: Uh, one very simple one, it can predict your gender, and uh it's very useful for uh for fashion brands because you know there are different items for kids, female, male, and then how can you get that information?
- 16:51SPEAKER_01: You ask people, but it creates extra friction, and many people they will just not reply, most people.
- 16:58SPEAKER_01: So actually, AI is it's very uh very smart.
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: I think it's nine more than 99% accurate, and uh, based on your email address and your name, it will know your gender, and uh that's it.
- 17:13SPEAKER_01: So you can address people based on that, and uh, there are other predictive analytics, it can also predict when you will buy next time.
- 17:23SPEAKER_01: What what's the most likely date that you will buy again, and it can launch an automation on that date, so it will know that okay, this is your purchase history.
- 17:36SPEAKER_01: First of all, you need some data for this, so of course you have to buy at least two, three times.
- 17:42SPEAKER_01: Um, ideally, even more.
- 17:44SPEAKER_01: But once you do, then uh clearly will send you an email flow.
- 17:49SPEAKER_01: It it knows that you are most likely to buy on the 3rd of October.
- 17:54SPEAKER_01: Maybe you get your salary on that day, or I don't know.
- 17:57SPEAKER_01: Uh and uh it sends you an email flow and it sends you the right products that you checked before on the site.
- 18:05SPEAKER_01: So these are all automated and uh pattern recognition and really smart.
- 18:10SPEAKER_01: That's because it all increases the conversion, right?
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, as I say, that's crazy smart.
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: And what a great way to build lifetime value and even retention to some degree.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: Because, like to your point, as long as I've made a couple purchases, the system's smart enough to know at this point.
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: We're in, I mean, in the not too distant past, you had to actually track that or just put everybody in a bucket and just hope you know, spray and pray, that kind of thing.
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: And now with AI and its ability to recognize patterns, it's able to suggest put audiences in a silo essentially, and then uh pepper them with ads with the most likelihood of getting conversion.
- 18:49SPEAKER_00: That is amazing.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: So, on that note, so I understand how the creative side works, and I understand how we're using some of the data and functionality.
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: If we can, let's tie this to the main topic.
- 19:00SPEAKER_00: So, what how does what we're doing impact uh retention and lifetime value?
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: Like, what are some so what specifically for you?
- 19:09SPEAKER_00: If I'm an e-commerce brand in the beauty space, how would we work together?
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: Like, what KPIs would I be looking at in terms of retention versus lifetime value?
- 19:20SPEAKER_00: And then how do we we strategize around that?
- 19:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, sure.
- 19:24SPEAKER_01: So there are uh I always say there are channel specific metrics and more like business higher level metrics, you know.
- 19:32SPEAKER_01: So for email or SMS marketing, open rates, click-through rate, all of these engagement metrics, unsubscribe rate, bounce rate.
- 19:41SPEAKER_01: And if you send the right message to the right people at the right time, and AI can help you with that, then all of these metrics will get better.
- 19:49SPEAKER_01: And then over time, these all affect your business level metrics, which is uh lifetime value and returning customer rate, your average order value, so these higher level numbers, and it takes time to get those uh get those uh higher.
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: Um but we use tools where we can see that.
- 20:09SPEAKER_01: So, for example, triple L or Nordbeam or even GA4 can help you to a certain extent.
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: Uh, but these tools it will tell you what was the lifetime value in the past six months, past 30 days, past one year, and ideally, you want to see an increase um in lifetime value, but also average order value, all of those basically.
- 20:33SPEAKER_00: That's pretty interesting.
- 20:34SPEAKER_00: From a timeline perspective, let's just say uh I start working with an agency.
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: Like, generally, how long could somebody expect before they start to see improvements?
- 20:43SPEAKER_00: Do you guys have like a 90-day wind-up window?
- 20:46SPEAKER_00: Is it does it vary based on the maturity of the company?
- 20:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: You mentioned 90 days, and actually we have that.
- 20:53SPEAKER_01: So I just had a call with a potential client before this uh podcast, and uh I told her 90 days, and and especially now in Q4, it's basically one quarter of the year.
- 21:06SPEAKER_01: So it it totally makes sense.
- 21:08SPEAKER_01: And of course, if you don't have any email marketing setup, then it takes a few weeks to see results because you have nothing.
- 21:16SPEAKER_01: But uh, if you are a more mature company, like most of our clients, you know, eight-figure clients, then uh then 90 days, I think it's a good uh good start, and uh and many times you don't see the lifetime value increase yet because it's a mature company with a lot of customers.
- 21:36SPEAKER_01: But we see the engagement metrics, the click rate is better because the email creatives are better, we do more uh segmentation.
- 21:44SPEAKER_01: So, first, you know, open rate is better, click rate is better, there is less spam, and then over time it uh really elevates your lifetime value, average order value, all of that.
- 21:57SPEAKER_01: It takes more time.
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: Beautiful.
- 21:59SPEAKER_00: That makes sense.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: On that note too, so when you're building these email lists, like if I'm a new brand, do you suggest that they buy email lists, do cold email marketing?
- 22:09SPEAKER_00: I know with the larger companies they have they have a database, so it may not be as necessary.
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: I guess when you work with a brand, do you do both?
- 22:17SPEAKER_00: Like, what does email marketing actually look like?
- 22:19SPEAKER_00: Is it cold and warm or is it a mix of both?
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, great question.
- 22:24SPEAKER_01: And uh it's important to clarify.
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: So I never uh suggest that you should buy a list because in the past we had clients where uh you know they did that and uh it never worked out.
- 22:39SPEAKER_01: Actually, I just got a message by someone that he has a list of 400,000 customers, and none of them are subscribed, none of them are subscribed to email, and he really wanted to email them because that's a huge asset.
- 22:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's a huge.
- 22:53SPEAKER_01: And then I told him don't do it because uh you know it's just risky, especially in Europe.
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: So so in the end, he he he will not do that, and I know it it's really a bad feeling, it's a huge list.
- 23:07SPEAKER_01: You he collected it for years, but uh yeah, they must be subscribers, and and I don't recommend buying lists.
- 23:15SPEAKER_01: Uh also it's it's simply just not legal uh for for most countries, in most countries, but uh even if it is, then I just I don't see good results because it's very different when they subscribe and they give you their consent, they give you their email or even phone number, and uh and they recognize your uh your name or your brand's name in their inbox.
- 23:40SPEAKER_01: It's it's really different.
- 23:41SPEAKER_00: What's the uh this is really interesting and be all transparent, like Belavx doesn't do any cold email marketing, so I'm just unfamiliar with it.
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: What are the ramifications if I get caught doing cold emails?
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: Like if I bought a list and I used it, would my domain get blacklisted?
- 23:57SPEAKER_00: Would would I actually get arrested if I was in Europe?
- 23:59SPEAKER_00: Like what uh what what's the drawback?
- 24:02SPEAKER_00: What's the burn touch the fire?
- 24:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 24:05SPEAKER_01: So actually, I also send cold emails, but B2B cold emailing is legal in most countries in Europe.
- 24:13SPEAKER_01: I think in Canada and Australia it's not, but I uh these rules change all the time.
- 24:19SPEAKER_01: But in most countries, B2B is all right, B2C is not, so that's the big difference, yeah.
- 24:25SPEAKER_01: So if you are in B2B, you can do that in most countries, and uh yeah, but if you are B2C and you just email all kinds of regular people with your product, then um I don't know the fines.
- 24:42SPEAKER_01: I know for SMS it's just huge in the US, like thousands of dollars per recipient.
- 24:48SPEAKER_01: Wow, crazy.
- 24:50SPEAKER_01: That is if you send out 10,000, then you know it's just yeah, that's it.
- 24:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 24:56SPEAKER_01: I I don't know about email, but uh it's just not worth it.
- 25:00SPEAKER_01: Also, side note I know there are lawyers, attorneys who actively look for these companies.
- 25:07SPEAKER_01: They subscribe or or you know, they they look for ways to find these companies and then they just sue these companies.
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: Wow, yeah, get some of that blood, I get you.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: Boy, leave it to lawyers, man.
- 25:18SPEAKER_00: That is pretty interesting and great insights too.
- 25:21SPEAKER_00: So if you're a D2C brand, make sure that all the emails you get they have subscribed and said, Hey, it's okay for you to email me, and that's really important.
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: So, on that note, let's jump into the next question.
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: What are some of the best ways to leverage AI for copywriting and email marketing?
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: And how does it enhance personalization?
- 25:42SPEAKER_01: Wow, that's a great question.
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, we as I said, AI is good at pattern recognition, you know, finding uh yeah, patterns in the data.
- 25:53SPEAKER_01: And uh I I think we all remember those old days when the personalization was first name.
- 26:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 26:00SPEAKER_01: And uh and you know, the software knew your name, and it was a big thing.
- 26:04SPEAKER_01: And actually, we measured it now, it decreases the conversion rate because it just overused and and yeah, I don't think it adds too much to the content nowadays.
- 26:16SPEAKER_01: But one example I like so it can recognize your uh history and uh what products you visited on the website and purchase before, and uh when we send out 100,000 emails, every recipient will see different product recommendations.
- 26:33SPEAKER_01: So that that's based on AI and uh it knows your history.
- 26:38SPEAKER_01: Wow, and uh the more history you have, the more precise it will be.
- 26:43SPEAKER_01: So if you buy a supplement from a brand and you you know you are a you are a buyer for two years, it will be really precise to know what you need and when.
- 26:54SPEAKER_01: Um so that's just one example, and then uh I also mentioned earlier that uh it knows when you will buy, most likely, and you will get emails at that time and it's fully automated.
- 27:06SPEAKER_01: So I I don't push any button.
- 27:09SPEAKER_01: Um so yeah, these are just a few examples how it can uh personally.
- 27:14SPEAKER_00: That's amazing.
- 27:15SPEAKER_00: It sounds like the predictive analytics is really the advantage of using some of these AI systems.
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I guess if I was um if I was a supplement brand, we'll keep on your example, and I'm considering using AI.
- 27:27SPEAKER_00: I guess what does the AI do differently that uh that that we're not doing as humans outside of the predictive analytics with like the actual copy?
- 27:36SPEAKER_00: Is it is it super long?
- 27:38SPEAKER_00: Is it you mentioned the first name may it reduce it?
- 27:41SPEAKER_00: Um, does it change the closing?
- 27:44SPEAKER_00: Like, I guess what tell me a bit more about how it generates the copy and how it's different than like how a human would do it.
- 27:51SPEAKER_00: If if it's even different at all.
- 27:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 27:54SPEAKER_01: I think uh let's say product recommendations are different.
- 27:58SPEAKER_01: I I think the biggest thing that moves the needle is uh um, you know, like 20 years ago, there were no email automations.
- 28:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, only manually you hit the button, it went out, it was a blast campaign.
- 28:12SPEAKER_01: And then we started having automations.
- 28:15SPEAKER_01: I don't know when because I I wasn't around back then, like probably 15 years ago or 10 years ago, but it was a big uh big change because automations are behavior-based.
- 28:27SPEAKER_01: So nobody has to be there and click a button to send the email, but the email goes out when somebody takes an action.
- 28:35SPEAKER_01: And if it happens at 2 a.m.
- 28:37SPEAKER_01: because you are in the US and I'm in Europe, you will still get the email at 2 a.m.
- 28:42SPEAKER_01: And then we can see these automations, they generate more revenue per email than campaigns.
- 28:48SPEAKER_01: And then now we have AI, which it takes this whole thing to the next level that you don't have to push any buttons, the products will be personalized, the copy is more personalized, the design is more personalized.
- 29:01SPEAKER_01: So simply AI automates things and you don't have to put in the work.
- 29:08SPEAKER_01: Um you could, but it's just not worth it because human labor is expensive compared to AI.
- 29:14SPEAKER_01: But now AI can do all of these, and uh yeah, that changes everything.
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: Um, if you don't mind, I want to share something um that we tested.
- 29:26SPEAKER_01: Actually, we tested AI written copy against human copywriters.
- 29:31SPEAKER_01: Oh, cool.
- 29:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we had 15 tests, A B test, and uh five times the human human copywriters one and 10 times AI one.
- 29:42SPEAKER_01: And uh these are senior copywriters, our best copywriters.
- 29:47SPEAKER_01: So there's just something interesting.
- 29:50SPEAKER_01: And another test for design, and this is my favorite.
- 29:55SPEAKER_01: So we started working with a startup, it's called boost.ai.
- 30:00SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 30:01SPEAKER_01: Um unfortunately now they are out of business.
- 30:04SPEAKER_01: Uh so yeah, but we used to work with them, and uh what so what they do or or did so they can uh generate uh human models using AI, and uh you can uh use your products and and put your uh your t-shirt on them, or or you know, these models sit on your uh on your couch that you sell, or or chairs, whatever.
- 30:30SPEAKER_01: And uh we A B tested those AI generated models with the products against real models and and you know the brand did a photo shooting, and we tested two.
- 30:42SPEAKER_01: And uh we sent out two campaigns and the AI generated uh models, they uh won each each time.
- 30:51SPEAKER_01: They got 30-40 percent higher click rates, wow, and uh, and one of them generated more revenue as well.
- 30:59SPEAKER_01: So that's just super interesting, and super interesting to see that people they uh they just buy more if they see a not real human, but you know, an AI generated human in the email.
- 31:12SPEAKER_00: So I'm gonna say most people probably can't even tell.
- 31:14SPEAKER_00: We've been playing with some software that build videos off AI, uh AI, and you know, some outside of the mouth not always lining up.
- 31:24SPEAKER_00: I mean, I I personally have trouble telling the difference.
- 31:27SPEAKER_00: I think we're yeah not too far away before you know nobody can tell if it's a human or AI.
- 31:32SPEAKER_00: So yeah, really amazing.
- 31:34SPEAKER_00: And if I understand correctly, so the AI-powered email campaigns versus traditional, like human generated, yeah, had better open rates, had better click-through rates, and had better conversion rates across the board, across all your tests.
- 31:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and uh I it's in front of me and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven clients, seven different industries.
- 31:55SPEAKER_01: So it doesn't depend on the industry or the country.
- 31:59SPEAKER_01: Most of them they are in the US.
- 32:01SPEAKER_01: Wow, um, but especially the click-through rate was higher.
- 32:06SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, it's just super interesting.
- 32:10SPEAKER_00: It is super interesting, and maybe and actually, I'm not surprised, like what we know about marketing at the super high level, like personalization, intent-based marketing, like to your point, what you mentioned earlier in the show, it's like catching the people at the right time with the right messaging is gonna lead to a sale.
- 32:26SPEAKER_00: And it's no, it's almost not so crazy to believe like AI can recognize intent because of pattern recognition, and it can also personalize the messaging because it knows you, it knows your shopper, knows your avatar, it knows the business.
- 32:40SPEAKER_00: So uh I'm actually not as surprised.
- 32:43SPEAKER_00: And I guess my next question for you would be like, how should a brand consider leveraging this technology?
- 32:49SPEAKER_00: Should everybody just sign up for Clavio and throw all their products on there?
- 32:53SPEAKER_00: Is there uh there's obviously more to this, but what advice would you give to an e-commerce brand that is like, hey, we're not really doing email marketing, or I've grown my list of 500 subscribers?
- 33:05SPEAKER_00: Like, how should I start peppering them with ads or sorry with email campaigns?
- 33:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, sure.
- 33:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so I uh I don't recommend an email tool just because of AI, but of course it adds a lot to that.
- 33:16SPEAKER_01: And uh I've been working with Clavio since 2017, and back then uh I went to their conference in Boston and it was roughly 100 people back then, and now it's a huge company.
- 33:30SPEAKER_01: They they their evaluation is 10 billion dollars now, so that their growth has been huge, like the the largest in the Shopify ecosystem out of any kind of apps.
- 33:42SPEAKER_01: And uh I recommend Clavio to e-commerce business owners because it uh connects very well with most tools, uh especially Shopify.
- 33:53SPEAKER_01: Shopify invested into this company, so it's everyone's interest to have very strong integrations, and then uh even before AI, Clavio was really strong on the data side, so they are in Boston next to Harvard and MIT.
- 34:08SPEAKER_00: Oh, there you go.
- 34:09SPEAKER_01: So you know, I just trust these guys, and uh they never let me down in the past uh seven years.
- 34:16SPEAKER_01: Wow, and uh now they have some competition because uh they started raising prices, sure.
- 34:24SPEAKER_01: Um, but still it's it's number one, and uh they just launched their data platform uh a couple months ago, so that's also something you can try if you have at least 100,000 subscribers, so more for bigger businesses, but they are really strong on the data side from day one, and uh I think the competition is still not there where Clavio is.
- 34:48SPEAKER_00: So beautiful.
- 34:49SPEAKER_01: That's how I see it.
- 34:51SPEAKER_00: That's amazing.
- 34:53SPEAKER_00: So uh, should everybody be doing email marketing?
- 34:56SPEAKER_00: Is this like a no-brainer across the board?
- 35:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, honestly, I'm I'm yet to find a company who shouldn't do it.
- 35:04SPEAKER_01: I mean, I yeah, I mean, there are companies who shouldn't do it.
- 35:08SPEAKER_01: Uh sometimes I find those, but like 95%, 99, like almost everyone really should do email marketing.
- 35:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, beautiful.
- 35:19SPEAKER_00: What are some of the basics?
- 35:21SPEAKER_00: So if I'm getting started, what's like the most basic type of email campaign?
- 35:25SPEAKER_00: I would set up, let's say I'm using a tool like Clavia.
- 35:28SPEAKER_00: Like if we were gonna work together, what's like the first thing we do?
- 35:31SPEAKER_00: And let's just say I don't have a large database, I'm a relatively small business.
- 35:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I would start with automations actually.
- 35:39SPEAKER_01: So just like as I said, uh they work 24-7, and uh you set them up only once and they will work forever.
- 35:49SPEAKER_01: Actually, we have case studies where uh we had a client, a small business, like they make 500k a year, and uh they didn't have the budget for an ongoing uh email management.
- 36:02SPEAKER_01: So I just told him, okay, let's just uh set up your automations, we leave them there, and you will see the results in a couple months.
- 36:11SPEAKER_01: So we set up three automations, we set up the sign-up forms and pop-ups so his email list uh could grow faster.
- 36:21SPEAKER_01: Not just the customer subscribe, but visitors as well, they could, and then we attach the vacuum flow to that.
- 36:28SPEAKER_01: So we educated these subscribers, and then we set up an abandon card flow, and the third was I think uh post-purchase flow for customers, and we want them to buy again.
- 36:40SPEAKER_01: So these three, and then it was a small project, we set this up, it was a fashion brand, and uh actually we let these uh automations work for one year, and it added a hundred K in revenue to this small business, so like 20 revenue 20 increase, that's amazing, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 37:03SPEAKER_01: And uh after one year, he came back and he became an ongoing client.
- 37:08SPEAKER_01: So I was see the value.
- 37:11SPEAKER_00: That's amazing, that's amazing, and I that's really interesting, too.
- 37:15SPEAKER_00: You hit a lot of points.
- 37:16SPEAKER_00: So building and growing your list, uh, having pop-ups on your website to not only capture email addresses for people who visited your site but didn't make a purchase.
- 37:26SPEAKER_00: You had an educational drip campaign going on that's like why buy our product, unique selling proposition.
- 37:32SPEAKER_00: Uh, you had a post-purchase email sequence to build that average order value or uh increase lifetime value.
- 37:39SPEAKER_00: And then I'm what was the third one that you built out?
- 37:43SPEAKER_01: Uh, I think it was the post-purchase flow, the vaccine flow, the educational, and then the abandoned card and abandoned card.
- 37:51SPEAKER_01: That was uh abandoned card, yeah.
- 37:52SPEAKER_00: That was the one card.
- 37:54SPEAKER_00: Very cool.
- 37:54SPEAKER_00: So if uh if nothing else, if I'm getting started, we would want to do the abandoned cart, we'd want to do an educational series with pop-ups to capture email addresses, and then a post-purchase email sequence.
- 38:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, in your opinion, what makes an effective post-purchase email sequence?
- 38:09SPEAKER_00: Like, how how do you solicit these shoppers to buy again?
- 38:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's a great question.
- 38:17SPEAKER_01: And actually, this is the automation where it's it's it's good to know your audience and your products, and I will tell you why.
- 38:25SPEAKER_01: So if you sell products that uh you know they sell quickly, like supplements or or or even fast fashion, let's say, then uh somebody buys, and it's completely fine to send an email and tell them buy this another product.
- 38:43SPEAKER_01: You can add this to your previous purchase.
- 38:46SPEAKER_01: But if they buy a I don't know, 500 or$1,000 mattress, you don't want to do that.
- 38:52SPEAKER_01: They will not buy the mattress the next another mattress next day.
- 38:56SPEAKER_01: So you rather you want to nurture them and you want to educate them further, or maybe you want to upsell the pillows or or do different things, as for a referral, for example.
- 39:08SPEAKER_01: So it really matters what you sell.
- 39:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's really smart too.
- 39:13SPEAKER_00: I never thought about that.
- 39:14SPEAKER_00: So if you're like a one-time purchase type company, like a mattress, you know, once every time, yeah, furniture is another great one.
- 39:22SPEAKER_00: You're gonna your methodology is gonna be hey, here's a complimentary product, like the pillows, which is a great suggestion, or you're gonna say, Hey, refer a friend, and we'll we'll kick you back 50 bucks or something like that.
- 39:32SPEAKER_00: And those be the most effective incentives.
- 39:36SPEAKER_00: That's interesting.
- 39:38SPEAKER_00: Very cool, awesome.
- 39:39SPEAKER_00: Well, this was super helpful.
- 39:40SPEAKER_00: I've learned a whole bunch about email marketing today.
- 39:43SPEAKER_00: So, Daniel, thanks for sharing all that.
- 39:45SPEAKER_00: I want to talk a little bit about Badaye Media.
- 39:47SPEAKER_00: So, like, if one of our listeners who's an e-commerce brand, this is really resonating, they're like, Yeah, I need to get AI on my Shopify website so that I could get some of these automations in place.
- 39:58SPEAKER_00: Um, could you first tell us like what's your unique approach to retention marketing and how do you integrate AI across these different channels, like SMS and your loyalty programs and email marketing?
- 40:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 40:13SPEAKER_01: So, first of all, we have a ton of experience, as I said.
- 40:16SPEAKER_01: So uh more than 200 clients up to date, and uh more than 90% of them, they achieve the goal that we set at the beginning of the 90 days.
- 40:27SPEAKER_01: We always set a goal with our new clients.
- 40:30SPEAKER_01: So we have a very high success rate, and uh I think it's because of uh two reasons.
- 40:36SPEAKER_01: One, we have as many team members as clients, so client-team member ratio is one to one.
- 40:42SPEAKER_01: I think that's right in the agency space, and uh also we are really strong on the process and data side, so we measure everything, we keep our staff accountable for that, and we keep clients accountable as well.
- 40:57SPEAKER_01: So I think that's the key of um of our success.
- 41:01SPEAKER_01: And um, sorry, what was your other question?
- 41:05SPEAKER_00: Oh no, this was great.
- 41:06SPEAKER_00: So that was the key to success.
- 41:08SPEAKER_00: Um what so you mentioned being process oriented and you hold your team accountable, which is you, Janine C World.
- 41:15SPEAKER_00: You're only as good as your work.
- 41:17SPEAKER_00: Um, what does the first like 90 days look like if we decided to work together?
- 41:21SPEAKER_00: So let's go with the beauty brand.
- 41:22SPEAKER_00: I love beauty brands, and I I sign a contract.
- 41:26SPEAKER_00: Like, what how how does what does the first 90 days look like together?
- 41:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 41:31SPEAKER_01: Typically, we start with an audit even before signing the contract.
- 41:36SPEAKER_01: So we make an audit and uh we come up with the suggestions, you know, what to work on first.
- 41:43SPEAKER_01: And if you don't have your email flow set up properly yet, then we start with those email flows or automations because as I said, they generate the most uh revenue and uh they work 24-7.
- 41:56SPEAKER_01: So they need a one-time setup.
- 41:59SPEAKER_01: That's where we start, and uh it can take a couple of weeks to set those up.
- 42:04SPEAKER_01: And once we have those, we continue with the campaigns.
- 42:08SPEAKER_01: So um, yeah, we continue the campaigns, we we check uh your spam rate, how many emails going to spam.
- 42:16SPEAKER_01: If too many, we adjust your strategy, we come up with a segmentation strategy, uh, also a plan what to A B test.
- 42:26SPEAKER_01: We always work one, two months in advance, so we don't like last-minute changes.
- 42:33SPEAKER_01: We try to prepare, you know, always months, one, two months um in advance, and uh and just really have a plan about everything.
- 42:43SPEAKER_00: Beautiful.
- 42:44SPEAKER_00: Sounds like very well thought out.
- 42:46SPEAKER_00: Uh, your team when you work with a brand, is it do I have an account manager, copywriter, data guy?
- 42:52SPEAKER_00: Like what's the makeup?
- 42:53SPEAKER_01: What's your team makeup with the service side?
- 42:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 42:56SPEAKER_01: So on each account, we have four people working on, and uh, we have an account manager who is basically a strategist, and this person connects the our team with the client's team.
- 43:10SPEAKER_01: And uh, we have a copywriter, we have an email designer, and we have someone who manages the software.
- 43:16SPEAKER_01: So these four people work together, and uh also we give access to the client to all of these people, so not just they can talk not to the not only to the account manager, but the whole team if they want.
- 43:29SPEAKER_00: Wow, very cool.
- 43:31SPEAKER_00: I like the process, I like the team you have servicing.
- 43:34SPEAKER_00: It's great to have multiple members with different functions, which is great.
- 43:39SPEAKER_00: Um, cool.
- 43:40SPEAKER_00: On that note, before we jump into the future of e-commerce, which is a tradition here, I got one more question for you.
- 43:45SPEAKER_00: Could you share like a case study that you're most proud of?
- 43:49SPEAKER_00: A brand the 20% is pretty impressive with the the company you shared earlier.
- 43:53SPEAKER_00: Um, but do you have another vertical or another story that you're very proud of that you could share with our audience?
- 43:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, sure.
- 43:59SPEAKER_01: So So we have this Canadian uh home decor uh brand and they sell uh worldwide, but mostly in North America, they sell high-ticket lamps, that's their niche, and uh they are in the eight-figure revenue range.
- 44:15SPEAKER_01: Nice, and I really like these case studies when there is a more mature brand and they come to us, they already have solid revenue numbers, and we can take them even further.
- 44:27SPEAKER_01: So those are my favorite, and also it's just very it's just not easy, it's hard, yeah.
- 44:33SPEAKER_01: You know, because with with new brands, it's just easier.
- 44:36SPEAKER_01: You set up the basics and it usually works, but here it's it's different.
- 44:41SPEAKER_01: So when they came to us, they already had almost 40% of revenue from email marketing.
- 44:46SPEAKER_01: Wow, and that's significant if it's an eight-figure business, yeah, yeah, and then they uh didn't know how to get to the next level, or even that is a next level after this, and uh we could achieve 55% during Q4, and uh after six months of work, and we added SMS marketing, and we added push notifications, we launched the loyalty program, and uh also we changed their uh email creatives, so we came up with better design, better copywriting, and uh that's that's the most time-consuming part the creatives.
- 45:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you need very good designers and copywriters, and we help them uh with that as well.
- 45:33SPEAKER_01: So that's how we could hit uh these numbers.
- 45:37SPEAKER_01: And I would just highlight that uh it's not just about email marketing, you want to add these additional channels, SMS, loyalty program, push notifications, and these will all add up by time.
- 45:50SPEAKER_01: You don't want to start with these as a small business, but once you are there at the seven, eight-figure level, you want to add these as well.
- 45:58SPEAKER_00: Beautiful.
- 45:59SPEAKER_00: So if you're your small business and you're listening, start getting those phone numbers now.
- 46:03SPEAKER_00: Just because you can't use them doesn't mean there's not a future where you won't be using them.
- 46:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, beautiful.
- 46:09SPEAKER_00: That was all eight figures, too.
- 46:10SPEAKER_00: That's amazing.
- 46:11SPEAKER_00: And lamps, there's a lot, uh, a lot of really successful furniture companies that uh are not very big brands that people don't know about, but they do really well.
- 46:20SPEAKER_00: Um, awesome, Daniel.
- 46:22SPEAKER_00: Thanks for sharing all this information.
- 46:24SPEAKER_00: Really great.
- 46:25SPEAKER_00: I got some new perspective on email marketing, and I hope all our listeners enjoyed and they took away um some key strategies that they can implement in terms of whether they're using Clavio or how they should think of AI in terms of email.
- 46:38SPEAKER_00: But we also did talk a little bit about SMS and loyalty.
- 46:41SPEAKER_00: Here on the show, we have our tradition, the future of e-commerce.
- 46:44SPEAKER_00: And I like to ask all our thought leaders and experts who come on the show to pull out their crystal balls and tell me what they think the future of e-commerce and technology will be.
- 46:54SPEAKER_00: So, on that note, as technology continues to evolve, how do you see AI shaping the future of e-commerce, retention marketing over the next two to three years?
- 47:05SPEAKER_01: That's a really tough question.
- 47:07SPEAKER_00: I could do the next one if you want.
- 47:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so um, how it will I I think the we mentioned creatives, we talked a lot about creatives, copy and design.
- 47:18SPEAKER_01: I think the next one will be videos.
- 47:21SPEAKER_01: So these three areas.
- 47:23SPEAKER_01: I think copy has changed the most, design is in the middle, and video is you still need an editor and and all of that, but I think that will be the next thing that will be changed.
- 47:35SPEAKER_01: And uh, I'm really curious to see how it will change at creatives and uh you know, because you can use it for design, you don't need a photo shoot anymore, um, or or not as you know frequently.
- 47:51SPEAKER_01: Maybe in a couple of years we will not need editors.
- 47:54SPEAKER_01: So um I I I can share an interesting story or or talk that I had with someone from um Spotify.
- 48:04SPEAKER_01: Oh he doesn't work for Spotify, but he consulted with uh the Swedish Spotify, you know where Spotify is from.
- 48:12SPEAKER_01: And he told me that in a couple of years we will not have podcasts because everything will be uploaded into the cloud, and uh you send me a request that you want to generate an interview with me, and it will be generated by AI using the the cloud, basically, what's in the cloud, and that's it.
- 48:33SPEAKER_01: So we don't have to meet, we don't have to spend time together, it will be automatically generated, and you just buy the you just pay the royalty fee or you know the rights, copyrights, and and that's it.
- 48:46SPEAKER_01: So let's see.
- 48:48SPEAKER_01: That just let's see for sure.
- 48:51SPEAKER_00: That's gonna be sad.
- 48:52SPEAKER_00: I love the podcast.
- 48:53SPEAKER_00: I think to meet interesting people like you.
- 48:55SPEAKER_00: Would it be sad if I just send a royalty check and I get the interview?
- 48:58SPEAKER_00: But it would be very efficient, so I could see that.
- 49:02SPEAKER_00: And uh well, I'm gonna take your earlier comment where uh the creatives will learn to manage uh technology.
- 49:08SPEAKER_00: And I think uh right now we have a couple managers at our agency, like similar to yours.
- 49:12SPEAKER_00: You either manage people or you manage processes.
- 49:15SPEAKER_00: And what I'm seeing with AI, and similar to what you mentioned, we're gonna be managing technology as like the third level of management.
- 49:21SPEAKER_00: So that was a really interesting take.
- 49:24SPEAKER_00: And uh, if it does happen in the next two to three years, you heard it here first.
- 49:27SPEAKER_00: Thanks very much, Daniel.
