- 0:00SPEAKER_01: We live in a world, it's like nine to five, this is how we've always done it.
- 0:04SPEAKER_01: And we grew up with that.
- 0:05SPEAKER_01: And now we're like, this doesn't work.
- 0:08SPEAKER_01: I'm frustrated.
- 0:09SPEAKER_01: I have stress.
- 0:10SPEAKER_01: And if we just look at, well, why don't I do this different?
- 0:13SPEAKER_01: Why don't I think about this different?
- 0:15SPEAKER_01: Why don't I have a better attitude about this?
- 0:17SPEAKER_01: ADHD mompletely changes everything.
- 0:26SPEAKER_01: Well, hey, welcome to Quick Wins for ADHD moms.
- 0:28SPEAKER_01: My name is Jessica Lynn Lewis.
- 0:30SPEAKER_01: Today we have Kaylee Buller on our show.
- 0:33SPEAKER_01: We're so excited to have her again.
- 0:35SPEAKER_01: Thank you for being with us, Kaylee.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: Before we have you share your quick win, um, tell us a little bit, remind us about who you are and what you do in normal life.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Yes, absolutely.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: So for those of you who don't know me, um I'm Dr.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: Kaylee Buller.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: So I am a physician, I'm a family doctor, but I only do emergency medicine and labor and delivery.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: Um I'm also a mom of two, and I have ADHD, and I was diagnosed relatively late in life.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: So I have the experience of being a child with ADHD untreated and going through the diagnosis as a physician, actually.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Um, and being able to have patients who have ADHD back when I did have a family practice, I've really gained a lot of valuable insight, I think, into what ADHD looks like, what it is, and how to manage it, which I think has really benefited me both as a physician and a mom.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: I think I'm a better physician because of it, and I think I'm a better mom because of it.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: So I think you because you're more aware of it and how it presents itself and how it's so different in everybody, but I'm sure you can recognize like looking back.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: It's like the hindsight's always 20-20.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: When you look back, you're like, okay, I can see it.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's so obvious in retrospect, but it is easier to see in in some patients as well.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: And and I think a lot of people when they think about ADHD, they think about distractability and attention.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: And it's so much more than that, right?
- 1:54SPEAKER_01: And I'm sure your listeners know that because abundance, we're saying it's an abundance of attention and it's it's hard to focus because we see everything.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Absolutely, yes.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: And then there's other tasks that go along with or are related to attention that don't even seem like attention on the outside, right?
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: When you talk about those executive domains about um flexibility or stress or um time blindness, like a lot of that has some relation to attention, but it doesn't always come across as.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: And I think we've talked about it before, a lot of women are misdiagnosed as anxiety because it seems like we're stressed out when really we just have a hard time filtering all the information.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: And we're stressed out because of the executive dysfunction.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: So you have a wonderful quick win for today.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: Can you share that with us?
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: So the quick win for today um is if you're anything like me and have trouble with stressing out when things don't go to plan, um, I think that's a big one.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Is having some built-in contingencies in your life.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: And they could be big or small.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Um, and you certainly don't have to have them for everything, but there are certain things that we know aren't going to go well, um, like getting your kids out the door in the morning.
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: Oh, you have problems with that?
- 3:13unknown: Right.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: And um Yeah.
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: No, we're fine here.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: No, absolutely.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: So we know that that's not always gonna go to plan.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: And so having, you know, a little bit of built-in extra time, right?
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: That could be your contingency for that example.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: Um, and my favorite one is I know at some point this week dinner's not gonna happen the way that I thought it was going to.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: Like, I'm not gonna have time to cook a meal.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: We're late, we don't have time.
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: So I always have- And you don't know until you're like, oh crap.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: Like the oh crap moment that happens a lot in my life.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: I don't know about you guys, but it does.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: No.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: And and you know, then you're rifling through the fridge in the freezer thinking, what am I gonna feed my family tonight?
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: Um, so one of my contingencies is we just always have emergency meals.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: I mean, they're not really emergency meals, but emergency meals in the freezer.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: So, and we use them regularly, right?
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: So my emergency meal I use every week.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: Yes, exactly.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: And I restock every week.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: But you never know, I never know what day I'm gonna need it.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: And I just so I just have it.
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: You're right, because there's so much ebbs and flows with our schedule, and we just need to be flexible with having a really healthy meal.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: You know what?
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: Chicken nuggets might have to be okay for tonight.
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: It's not forever, it's just once-a-week meals.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: And so there's so many ways to do it.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: And that's why I it makes it a little bit more difficult to explain because a contingency might just be packing extra snacks.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: Um but there's gonna be a scenario.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: And actually, I we're very recently, you just came home from Florida too, actually, didn't you?
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: Yes, yeah.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: We both we just missed each other in Florida.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: So coming home from Florida, there was a huge winter storm um in Toronto where we were flying into, and our evening flight was canceled and rebooked for the morning, and then our morning flight was canceled for mechanical issues.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: And so we were on the phone for three hours from like 4 30 till 7 30 in the morning.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: And now, are you in the Orlando airport?
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: This was Tampa.
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: So you were in T.
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: You flew into Tampa.
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: And that's much smaller.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: Much smaller, yeah.
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: So not as much to do.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: We were on well, exactly.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: So we were all we were still at home because they had canceled the flight at 4 30.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: We hadn't left for the airport yet.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: So we were on the phone with them.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: And then at seven in the morning, they said, Okay, there's a flight that can get you to Miami from a different airline at 8 30.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: And if you get to Miami, then we can get you to Toronto later.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: So we literally, like it was 7 a.m., we're an hour from the airport, and the flight left at 8:30.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: So we threw our luggage into my mother-in-law's closet.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: Like, we're not, we can't check it out.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: International flight.
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: Let's just say that too.
- 5:53SPEAKER_01: Because that's like you're supposed to be there two hours earlier, unless it's an international flight.
- 5:57SPEAKER_01: And then it's like more.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: So we know we could, like, we're not gonna check a bag.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: So I got toiletries and one outfit.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: I was like, in case we don't make it home, this is my contingency plan.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: In case we don't make it home, there's one outfit and toiletries, we throw it in a duffel bag.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: That's what we're taking.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: That's all we're taking.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: We threw the kids in the car and off we went.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: Um, we got there 20 minutes before the plane left.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: It was crazy.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: Got through security.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: I don't know how we did it.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: I don't know how we did it.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: Got into the flight, the flight.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: And then our connection, we were supposed to have an hour and a half to make it to our connecting flight.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: But there was another plane waiting at our gate when we landed, and we were stuck on the tarmac for an hour.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: So then we only had 30 minutes to get out of the plane through security again.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: Two small kids.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: Do you strollers?
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: Well, actually, we're hoofing it.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: So my six-year-old's piggybacking on me, and I'm carrying two bags.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: I got a backpack on my front, and my husband's got our three-year-old on his shoulders, and he's carrying bags, and we're running.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: And Miami airport is huge.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: I didn't realize.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: It's like a mile to get around, like a full mile from where we were.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: So we cut through the parking lot.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: It's, you know, we're sweating.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: It's just yeah, it's hot.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: It's coming from Canada, and it's like winter storm.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: Just like again, just make it before they close the doors.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: So, in all this time, we had no opportunity to get any food.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: So we had a three and a six-year-old for five hours, five and a half hours, no food.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: But I'm a pack snack, like I'm a pack, I'm a packer of snacks.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: You're a pack snacks.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: I am a packer snacker.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: A packer snacker.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: So the night before we left, because I knew I wasn't gonna want to pack snacks in the morning.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: The night before we left, thankfully, I packed goldfish pretzels, cashews, pouches, whatever.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: And my my backpack, my personal item was all snacks.
- 7:38SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna carry on a personal item of all snacks because I have two small kids.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: And that's but that's what I do.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: Like on a long flight, snacks are sometimes the best way to keep them distracted and happy.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: Oh, for sure.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: And I always pack a variety of things because who knows what they're gonna decide they'd like that day.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: So thank God I had this contingency plan.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: I wasn't expecting to not be able to get them any other food, but I had like they basically had goldfish and pretzels for breakfast and lunch.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: Um And that's I mean, that works.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: That's all you had.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: But if I hadn't done that, I would have been so stressed out.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: Like my kids would be hangry and having to figure out how am I gonna feed my kids, my kids, and like that breaks your heart a little bit.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: Like they're starving, they're rushed, you're stressed.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: That would have been a completely different scenario.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: But in this scenario, all I had to do was focus on getting to the plane.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: You have a contingency plan.
- 8:26SPEAKER_01: Because you thought ahead, you visualized what is this gonna look like if things if things don't go to plan, right?
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: And I feel like with an ADHD brain, I don't know about you, uh, really good at visualizing things.
- 8:38SPEAKER_01: Maybe everybody's different, but visualizing.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: Well, some, yeah, it looks like some plane.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: Better at visualizing, my husband not so much.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: Um and I think he does have he'll often joke about like normal.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, no, you have ADHD as well, but it's just a different brand of ADHD.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: But um, but even with you know, my son, for example, so he's also ADHD.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: And um, you know, he was concerned too.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: Like, what's gonna happen, Mom, if we don't make our flight?
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: Like you, but you said this is what it looks like.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: You said this is what and now it's not, and now he's got anxiety.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: He's got anxiety because it's not going to plan.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: And that's a really hard thing for ADHD brains.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: And we do better when we already have an escape route, right?
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: When we already have that alternate path.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: Um, and we do, I think, uh a pretty good job with our kids of just sort of as a general rule, like there's not a problem that we won't be able to solve, right?
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: So they they know that I think they're pretty confident in.
- 9:32SPEAKER_01: I want to point that out.
- 9:32SPEAKER_01: I want to pause right there because I know we have talked before, and you're so good at phrasing things with your kids, phrasing things and positioning things as hey, yes, it's a problem, but we can figure this out instead of like, oh my gosh, I don't know.
- 9:49SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: Well, then it's me sometimes is like, what are we gonna do?
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: You know, and they're looking at me like, I don't know.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: Well, and that's one of the biggest things I think as a parent is it being calm, right?
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: Approaching things from a place of calm, which is hard to do and it takes practice, obviously, but that's the best way to help your kids, I think.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: That's where acting comes in.
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: Yes, yeah.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: We act like everything is calm.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: Yes, and I mean I'm very fortunate because I work in a high stress environment, so I really don't freak out.
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: Right, right.
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: You're like, okay, we got this.
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: You're well trained and not freak out.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: And if something happens, we'll figure it out.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: Um, but even for him, right, explaining, okay, if we don't make this flight, which I think we will, but if we don't make it, no problem.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: We're just we'll go back to grandma's and we'll get another flight.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: And then when we are in Miami and we're running, and he goes, Well, what happens if we miss this flight?
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, you know what, buddy?
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: If we miss this flight, we'll find something fun to do for the rest of the day and we'll catch a later flight, no problem, right?
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: Because he needed to know that there was a plan B.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: Contingency.
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: Come up with a contingency plan.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: And it's hard because I think we know that, but to practice it is different.
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: And I think it's something that you, it's like a muscle.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: You just practice and you get better at, okay, here's our contingency plan, here's here's where we can be flexible.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: And not everything needs a plan B, but there are gonna be moments in your life, especially if you're the type of person who has a routine.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: And I I don't, and I've I've very envious of people who do.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: But if you know that every morning you're getting the kids up, you're getting them to school, and then you're going to work, and there's steps in that process that always take more time or they don't always go right, then you build in a little bit of extra time.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: So this is another thing I think we've talked about before is I have a school day clock for my kids.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: And so there's yeah, so I've got the clock and I painted the clock.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: And when it's pink, that's getting up and having breakfast.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: And then when it's yellow, that's we call it tactical pee.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: You do your tactical pee, you brush your teeth, and you get dressed.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: And then there's 10 minutes, there's a buffer in there.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: If everything's done, you can play or watch TV before it's time to go.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: And if they're not done, then we have an extra 10 minutes to get those things done.
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: And then, of course, our getting out the door, which is purple, is 15 minutes long, right?
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: That's when we go to get our shoes on.
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: It doesn't take 15 minutes usually to put on shoes and get in the car, but some days sometimes it does take 15 minutes to find the shoes and then we try to put them on.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: Or you get in the car and realize you've forgotten something, and so you have to run back inside and grab it.
- 12:19SPEAKER_00: So building in that extra time is is really helpful.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: Um, and there's another quick win that hopefully we'll talk about later.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: But um, when you're trying to plan things out, instead of planning for time, plan for tasks, which I think can be helpful too.
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: But we can talk about that another time.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: Well, yeah, we'll dive into that for sure.
- 12:37SPEAKER_01: Um, but I think even just getting our heads wrapped around that idea, oh, okay, what could that look like?
- 12:44SPEAKER_01: Because a lot of it is just shifting our thinking.
- 12:46SPEAKER_01: Like we live in a world, it's like nine to five, this is how we've always done it, right?
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: And we grew up with that.
- 12:53SPEAKER_01: And now we're like, this doesn't work.
- 12:56SPEAKER_01: I'm frustrated, I have stress.
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: And if we just look at, well, why don't I do this different?
- 13:02SPEAKER_01: Why don't I think about this different?
- 13:03SPEAKER_01: Why don't I have a better attitude about this?
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: Completely changes everything.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: And and being raised in a certain way, right?
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: Or being raised by parents who don't understand ADHD.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: Or parents who do have ADHD.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: And maybe didn't have the best coping techniques, whatever the case may be.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: So there might be things that we think we're supposed to do, but a lot of those, a lot of the things that we think we're supposed to do, we're supposed to fold the laundry in a certain way.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: Like laundry's not done until it's been through the wash and then the dryer and then folded.
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: But theoretically, that's just a construct that we've made up, right?
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: Technically, if the laundry is dry and clean, it's done.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: Like technically, it's done.
- 13:43SPEAKER_00: You don't have to fold it.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: You could, you could live out of a laundry hamper.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:48SPEAKER_01: But we we do a lot, actually.
- 13:51SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 13:51SPEAKER_01: So there's a lot there's a lot of things.
- 13:52SPEAKER_01: Throw it out on the bed.
- 13:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:53SPEAKER_01: I throw it on the bed, get your stuff, and then I'm like, I'm gonna fold this later because I have to, because it's all laid out on the bed.
- 14:00SPEAKER_01: And then I come back later and I'm just like push it all back into the laundry basket for bed.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: And that's my and that might be a system that and that might be a system that works for you.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: And there's nothing wrong with that.
- 14:11SPEAKER_00: So just because society tells us that we're supposed to have our laundry put away nicely in the closet doesn't mean that you actually have to have your laundry put away nicely in the closet.
- 14:19SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: So we can s we can still have a wonderful day without our folded laundry.
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: So sometimes it is really just a bit of a mind mindset shift.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: But I do I do think that the big ones are having emergency food in the freezer.
- 14:36SPEAKER_01: I think that's yeah, emergency food in the freezer.
- 14:39SPEAKER_01: All right, well, hey, let's dive into that.
- 14:40SPEAKER_01: We have a couple minutes left.
- 14:41SPEAKER_01: Let's dive into some ideas to get people to start thinking about okay, what could I have in my freezer?
- 14:47SPEAKER_01: Oh, absolutely.
- 14:48SPEAKER_01: We always have a frozen pizza.
- 14:49SPEAKER_01: We have frozen pizza stamps clubs, whether they have like three, three pizzas and like one 12 bucks or whatever.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: Frozen pizzas are great.
- 14:57SPEAKER_00: Chicken nuggets, obviously, are great.
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: Um we often will freeze leftovers so that we can just pull it out, you know, whenever we need it.
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: Um the problem with that, of course, is it takes a little bit of foresight to know that it needs defrosting to pull it out and defrost it.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 15:13SPEAKER_00: But um those are those are sort of our big ones.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: Frozen ribs is actually because they only take like the pre-cooked ribs, frozen, like they only take like 10 minutes on the barbecue.
- 15:21SPEAKER_00: They're actually a really quick meal, surprisingly.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: So we do that a lot.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: Um I love the like the chicken breast, um, like little pieces.
- 15:30SPEAKER_01: You can get breaded chicken, but if you're trying to live a healthier life, they have non-breaded breaded chicken.
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: Um, just frozen chicken breast, frozen chicken strips.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like the frozen fish that I need you to throw in the oven for 15 minutes or whatever and they're done.
- 15:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:45SPEAKER_01: Um I do a lot of canned canned chicken that you like.
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: It's kind of like tuna, but it's like canned chicken.
- 15:53SPEAKER_01: And then I'll throw it in like a can of like a corma sauce or something.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: I get it Aldi, and it's in a thing of peas, and it takes maybe five minutes.
- 16:02SPEAKER_01: Oh, that sounds amazing.
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: And it's it's so yummy.
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: And then just over rice.
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: You can get little packets of rice you put in the microwave for like 90 seconds.
- 16:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:12SPEAKER_01: We actually use those a lot more than I had hoped.
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: I'm thinking these are expensive, but at the same time, they're eating better food than stopping by McDonald's or something.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: Well, and what's interesting too is we we often just have like those little mini nan breads as well.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: So if we need to round out a meal, like, okay, all we have is chicken nuggets.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: Well, I guess not chicken nuggets, but like all we have is this frozen leftover chili um and a couple of nan breads.
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: Great, good.
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: Perfect.
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: It it does.
- 16:41SPEAKER_01: I like how you've rounded it out.
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: Instead of just like, oh, we're just having a bowl of chili, like that's it.
- 16:47SPEAKER_01: It's like, no.
- 16:47SPEAKER_01: Yes, yeah.
- 16:48SPEAKER_01: No, we're adding nanbread.
- 16:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it makes it totally different.
- 16:51SPEAKER_01: Or having nanbread and hummus.
- 16:54SPEAKER_01: You know?
- 16:55SPEAKER_01: I love keeping hummus in the fridge um and then just carrot like carrot sticks.
- 16:59SPEAKER_01: Yes, we do the same thing.
- 17:00SPEAKER_01: Quick and easy.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, hummus and tsatsiki, we always have.
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: Oh, I love tsatseky too.
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:05SPEAKER_00: Because again, it's super quick and easy.
- 17:06SPEAKER_00: And then uh honestly, yeah, I feel like strucuterie boards are really underrated.
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: Totally underrated.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: I love and it's a full meal.
- 17:13SPEAKER_00: It's a full meal.
- 17:13SPEAKER_00: You grab some fruit, some crackers, some cheese, boom, fancy meal, and it's done in It's so fun.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: And we all we have this little kitchen island, we all stand around it and we just eat, and like that's dinner, and we're and it's so fun.
- 17:25SPEAKER_01: It's perfect.
- 17:26SPEAKER_01: Of course, they eat, it's our first dinner.
- 17:28SPEAKER_01: I have two boys, and so there's like second dinner and then third dinner and then snack.
- 17:31SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: Well, then you definitely need some easy meal ideas if you're gonna be doing it.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: So we're constantly eating, but yeah.
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: You probably are.
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: We actually, when we bought um our place where we're living now, I specifically was like, we need room for a full upright freezer and a full upright fridge because our kids are young, they will be growing, they're gonna be eating all the time.
- 17:50SPEAKER_00: So I need lots of space.
- 17:52SPEAKER_01: This is true.
- 17:52SPEAKER_01: Yes, we have um a fridge in the basement, so we keep all the extra stuff down there.
- 17:57SPEAKER_01: Although the one thing though about that is that I forget what we have down in the basement.
- 18:03SPEAKER_01: So I have whiteboards up in my cupboard.
- 18:05SPEAKER_01: Like I open the cupboard and I have a whiteboard in the cupboard and I write down here's what's in the basement fridge.
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: We do something very similar and we have whiteboards in our pantry for we've run out of this, so it goes on the grocery list, or this is what we have.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: So with like our meal planning, I'll write down what's available in the freezer for that week in in our meal plan.
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: Yes, that's great.
- 18:25SPEAKER_01: The whiteboard, I'm finding many uses for whiteboards.
- 18:27SPEAKER_01: And I like to keep things clean and minimal.
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: So I like that the whiteboard is on the inside of the cabinet.
- 18:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:32SPEAKER_01: Instead of like sticking on the fridge or something.
- 18:34SPEAKER_01: So then the kids erase stuff and draw pictures.
- 18:39SPEAKER_01: I'm like, that's cute, but where'd my stuff go?
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: I don't remember.
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: I specifically downloaded it onto the whiteboard so I didn't have to keep it in my brain.
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:47SPEAKER_01: Whiteboard in the back of the cupboard just kind of hides it.
- 18:50SPEAKER_01: So yeah.
- 18:50SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: Um, so fun talking to you.
- 18:53SPEAKER_01: It's always fun.
- 18:54SPEAKER_01: I love your ideas.
- 18:55SPEAKER_01: Can you just recap the quick win today just because just because I need an I need another reminder.
- 19:01SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: So the quick win really is about flexibility and not so much rigid thinking, but what you do when things don't go to plan because that happens.
- 19:09SPEAKER_00: And a lot of the time in ADHD brains, the ability to figure out all the downstream effects of this didn't happen the way I wanted it to, is it's a lot.
- 19:18SPEAKER_00: It's overwhelming and it can be quite stressful.
- 19:20SPEAKER_00: So if you already have an escape hatch, if you already have an alternate path to take, it just becomes so easy.
- 19:26SPEAKER_00: So the quick win is just to build in some contingency plans into the, you know, not everything, but into some of those more commonly, this is gonna not go well today.
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: Morning routines, finding shoes, airplane rides.
- 19:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:42SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: So whether that be adding a little extra time every morning just as a default, or always having snacks in the car or always having snacks.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 19:58SPEAKER_00: So it can look different for everyone, but yeah.
- 20:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, find out what works for you.
- 20:02SPEAKER_01: But I love hearing what other people do because I'm like, ooh, I never thought about that.
- 20:05SPEAKER_01: That's a good idea.
- 20:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:07SPEAKER_01: Sweet.
- 20:08SPEAKER_01: Well, thank you, Kaylee.
- 20:08SPEAKER_01: I appreciate it.
- 20:09SPEAKER_01: And we'll have you on again soon, very soon.
- 20:11SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 20:11SPEAKER_00: Sounds great.
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: I look forward to it.
- 20:14SPEAKER_01: Well, do you have a quick meal plan that works for you or your family?
