- 0:00Oh, God. Oh, my God.
- 0:12Anyway, I keep going.
- 0:16More rap. More rap.
- 0:17Okay, hold on.
- 0:19Yeah, I guess I guess we're just right back where we were a minute ago.
- 0:22Yeah. Me, me, me, me, me, me, me.
- 0:24Just I'll tell you, I'm doing something to the knob. OK.
- 0:27Yeah, OK. Yeah, I did it.
- 0:29Perfect. Yeah, I felt it.
- 0:30Yeah. You did it to the knob.
- 0:32Yeah. We know from knobs.
- 0:38Speaking of knobs, there's that moment in between worlds.
- 0:43This is the way we introduce the.
- 0:44Oh, look at that.
- 0:45Did you see that, Sean?
- 0:46That was a fucking segue.
- 0:48That's how you do it. God damn segue.
- 0:51Welcome. Welcome back to Cage Match, everybody.
- 0:54Cage Magic, colon a roundabout way of meeting Nicolas Cage.
- 0:57I'm your host, Sean, with my cohost, Nick and our producer, Peter.
- 1:02Hello. And this week we have two guests.
- 1:05Why don't you guys introduce yourselves?
- 1:06My name's Roxanne and I am the wife of.
- 1:12I'm going by Gary.
- 1:14Yeah, we're going to go by Gary on the pod.
- 1:16And we're here to talk to Cage and real hyped about it.
- 1:19Thanks for having us. Love listening to you guys.
- 1:21And it feels like a real privilege to be here.
- 1:24Really excited for it. I think something good on this one.
- 1:26This is going to be great.
- 1:27So Roxanne, you were saying about Nick Cage's genitals.
- 1:32Yeah. Way to go, Rox.
- 1:34The word knob elicited a certain memory in me from yesterday
- 1:39when Gary and I were watching between worlds for the first time.
- 1:44Only time. Hopefully not the last.
- 1:48We get an annual tradition.
- 1:51Well, there was this one scene,
- 1:54but of all the scenes in the movie, I looked over at you and I like
- 2:00I did not know what my eyeballs were seeing.
- 2:02And that is this part when Nick Cage's character was his name.
- 2:07Joe is having sex with Billy slash his dead wife, Mary.
- 2:14And Billy's mom comes home.
- 2:17So Billy jumps up. Nick Cage gets out of bed.
- 2:21He has undies on apparently.
- 2:24And he's wearing a T-shirt and we think he's Donald Ducking it for a minute.
- 2:27But you can see something sticking out the bottom of the shirt.
- 2:32I looked around and I just said, what is going on with this guy's penis?
- 2:37This was the second week in a row where we thought we might have seen
- 2:40Nick Cage's dog for the first time.
- 2:42Yeah. Y'all are still waiting for that moment.
- 2:46Yeah. Fingers crossed.
- 2:47How are you going to find your penis double?
- 2:50Yeah, sure. You got to have your dick twin. Dick twin.
- 2:52Right. That was that.
- 2:54Penis double sounds like a stump person.
- 2:57Dick twin is like just a life affirming moment.
- 3:00Yeah. Makes you feel right with everything.
- 3:04And also probably a person's name.
- 3:05I bet there is a dick twin out there selling used cars.
- 3:08I did. I went over to a friend's house once.
- 3:12I'd never been there before.
- 3:13It was in a gated community.
- 3:15And I had to know her dad's name to get in,
- 3:19which I didn't know.
- 3:21I texted her and she told me, just tell them that, you know, rich friend.
- 3:26And I was like, no, I need to know your dad's name.
- 3:29And that was her dad's name.
- 3:33Got me in.
- 3:34Oh, we're in the weeds now.
- 3:35How do we get back to Nick Cage?
- 3:36Yeah, we know.
- 3:38This is what I guess.
- 3:40So this week, we are talking about
- 3:43Vampire's Kiss from 1988
- 3:46and Between Worlds from 2018.
- 3:49Two movies where something supernatural might be happening.
- 3:54Yeah, that's a good way to put it.
- 3:56Backtracking a little bit.
- 3:57This is Cage Match, where we take 64 Nicolas Cage movies
- 4:00and pick them up head to head bracket style
- 4:04to determine the best Cagiest movie of all time until he makes more.
- 4:09And we have to do extra content on Patreon.
- 4:12Sign up for our Patreon.
- 4:13It's the only way you find out.
- 4:15Find out what?
- 4:16I don't know. The truth.
- 4:17Yeah.
- 4:18You know, I actually want to ask about Peter is making
- 4:22best and Cagiest.
- 4:23You say that like the same thing.
- 4:25Have you all wrapped about whether or not that's different?
- 4:28Is the Cagiest film also going to be the best?
- 4:30No, we have to make this distinction because in like week two,
- 4:34I eliminated adaptation for Army of One, which was the wrong decision.
- 4:38I'm still mad about it.
- 4:39It's the best decision.
- 4:41It is the most Cagiest film.
- 4:42One of the most Cagiest films we've watched thus far.
- 4:44Yeah. I mean, where else are you going to see Nick Cage
- 4:46hang gliding to Afghanistan with a with a katana, a katana
- 4:51and a boombox on a red, white and blue hang glider?
- 4:53That's true.
- 4:54I do think there's an argument to be made, though, that between worlds
- 4:57is in the running for that.
- 4:58He literally breaks a fourth wall at one point in the film.
- 5:01No, it's a cagey ass film.
- 5:02I have things to say about it.
- 5:03So all right.
- 5:04Who wants to give me the general one paragraph synopsis of this movie?
- 5:10I can do you one better. I can do it in one sentence.
- 5:12Are you ready?
- 5:14A ghost is taking over Billy's body.
- 5:16Like some sort of hermit crab.
- 5:20So Nicholas Cage plays Trucker Joe.
- 5:23Trucker Joe.
- 5:24Joe Majors.
- 5:25Non-union as far as we can tell.
- 5:27And no one else you've ever heard of is in this stuff.
- 5:29That's not true.
- 5:30Franka Potente is in here and she was run Lola Run.
- 5:33Oh, you're right.
- 5:35Otherwise, nobody else is in it.
- 5:36Yeah. Nobody.
- 5:37Nobody matters.
- 5:38And L.A.B. Mitchell is Billy.
- 5:40That's the cast.
- 5:40Oh, well, you forgot about Hopper Penn.
- 5:43Sean Penn's kid.
- 5:44That's Sean Penn's kid.
- 5:45Yep, I did not know that.
- 5:46Well, the tree would have known that if we could have seen his wiener.
- 5:49That's true. You can always tell by the balls.
- 5:52The family resemblance would have been the family jewels.
- 5:54That's why they're called the family jewels.
- 5:56Yeah, that's why I'm at Hopper Penn and Dick twin.
- 5:59So you start together.
- 6:02So so Joe was a truck driver.
- 6:05Seems to be down on his luck.
- 6:06Oh, so oh, some money on things.
- 6:08Unclear.
- 6:09Well, you had a mortgage and he had a truck payment.
- 6:11Does he still have a mortgage?
- 6:12Well, I mean, he had a mortgage.
- 6:14I mean, he technically still has that property.
- 6:17Right.
- 6:18I mean, it seems fairly abandoned.
- 6:20He's finds himself in a truck stop where he decides to yuck some woman's yum.
- 6:27She's correct.
- 6:29You know, fucking she's got an asshole there.
- 6:31Yeah.
- 6:32So the woman's getting what's her name?
- 6:35Well, that's a really good question.
- 6:36Choked out in a bathroom stall.
- 6:38Do you ask for consent before you stop a choking?
- 6:44Oh, damn.
- 6:45That's deep.
- 6:47I think if you're I think if you're in public space.
- 6:51Yeah.
- 6:51You let it fly.
- 6:53No, I think if you're in public space doing that kind of act,
- 6:56you're unconsensually having people witness it, you know,
- 6:59so you're already kind of breaking that.
- 7:01And so if you butt in, it's like, well, you started it.
- 7:05You you butted into my shit.
- 7:07Now I'm button into yours.
- 7:08And then if they say, yo, you're yucking my yums,
- 7:11you know, see yourself out the door.
- 7:12But that's my take on it.
- 7:15It doesn't have to be the final word.
- 7:16It doesn't really give them time to explain their behavior.
- 7:18He just kind of kicks that guy's ass.
- 7:19Right. Truly.
- 7:20What if somebody busts in and it turns into like a Mexican choke off
- 7:23where everybody's choking everybody and like everybody's having a good time?
- 7:29That's best case scenario.
- 7:31What's your safe word, Nick?
- 7:32My safe word?
- 7:33Parallelogram.
- 7:35That's a good one.
- 7:36It is a good one.
- 7:37Peter and I like one weekend randomly found out we had the same safe word.
- 7:41It wasn't for sexy reasons.
- 7:43Don't ruin the mystery, Peter.
- 7:47What was it?
- 7:49Rutabaga.
- 7:51Oh, that's a good one.
- 7:52Very lyrical.
- 7:53So it turns out Julie can travel between worlds by drowning
- 8:01and or being choked in truck stop bathrooms.
- 8:03Peter, it looked like you were about to say something.
- 8:05I was going to say she can also get choked out in other places, Sean.
- 8:08Oh, that's true.
- 8:09I mean, up to this point, we only know one place she can do this.
- 8:12It's an NDE.
- 8:13She has to have an NDE, basically.
- 8:15It doesn't necessarily matter how.
- 8:16That's the sense I got from it.
- 8:18Near-death experience for the lay people.
- 8:21Thank you.
- 8:22Us enlightened folk over here.
- 8:23We're in on it.
- 8:24All of us people who are like down with all these choking terms.
- 8:28I was going to say, I don't know that sex.
- 8:30That's a good point, though, Rob.
- 8:32Stick with me after the pod, I'll show you.
- 8:34I'm curious if you could choose your own NDE experience to have to bring back people from
- 8:40the dead.
- 8:41What would you want it to be?
- 8:42Oh, damn.
- 8:43Drowning is really like in the ice water.
- 8:45That was a really killer one.
- 8:46I really enjoyed that from an aesthetic level.
- 8:49Looking at someone drowning under a sheet of ice was very pleasing to watch.
- 8:54So I really like that one on like a visual level.
- 8:57You're probably too distracted by the cringe worthy David Lynch homage that permeated the
- 9:03intro and the whole film.
- 9:04It was the same composer.
- 9:05Yeah, Battle of the Menti.
- 9:06Right.
- 9:07Yeah, I just found that whole thread really hard to watch.
- 9:11Cringe worthy is the word I'll use.
- 9:13I really enjoyed some of the stuff that David Lynch has done and I think making an homage
- 9:18to Twin Peaks specifically is kind of a cool thing to do, but I just thought it didn't
- 9:22come off very well.
- 9:24The piece of like Coast Salish art that was above the fireplace and they're in Louisiana.
- 9:28I was like, give me a break.
- 9:31At least try.
- 9:33So Billy crashes, so Nick Cage chokes Julie out and then something comes back.
- 9:41With consent.
- 9:42And something comes back.
- 9:43And we briefly see Julie between worlds.
- 9:47So they take Billy back home.
- 9:49Joe loses his truck.
- 9:51Billy has been, what's the word?
- 9:54Got him out of the brains again.
- 9:57Higacked.
- 9:58Possessed.
- 9:59Thank you.
- 10:00Possessed by Joe's ex-wife.
- 10:01They get into a sexual relationship with Billy's mom and things get weird involving him just
- 10:06getting a handy jay under a blanket while Billy's mom's in the kitchen.
- 10:11Holding a whole meat.
- 10:13Yeah, from his wife, but from her daughter.
- 10:16Yeah.
- 10:17So is it really wrong?
- 10:18I mean, he tries to explain it away when the mom catches them going at it later.
- 10:25It's like, it's my wife.
- 10:26It's like, that's my daughter.
- 10:27Can't they just be the same thing?
- 10:30So there's a lot of action involving ghosts.
- 10:33This is a horny ass ghost movie.
- 10:35Oh, I love a good horny ghost movie though.
- 10:37It's hornier than Ghost.
- 10:38Hornier or less horny than Drive Angry.
- 10:41Two horny ghost movies.
- 10:43Oh shit, right.
- 10:45This one had more boning down, but Drive Angry had more tit.
- 10:49Oh yeah, Drive Angry was a solid movie.
- 10:52This was a great movie too.
- 10:53I loved this film.
- 10:54This film was awesome.
- 10:55Yeah, I could definitely watch it right now.
- 10:58You guys are wrong.
- 10:59Well it's a good thing you don't get a vote, Peter.
- 11:04The only votes that ever count are mine and Sean's, but first mine.
- 11:08Well you know, I'll join you in that.
- 11:11I loved it as well, but not in the way it wanted me to love it.
- 11:14No, that's fair.
- 11:15I genuinely enjoyed it.
- 11:16This movie is bad and I love that about it.
- 11:20Oh, 100%.
- 11:21Yeah, for sure.
- 11:22I mean, yeah, the twin peaks homage, him having sex in two timelines and reading from his
- 11:26journal, they just hit you over the head with it.
- 11:29Over.
- 11:30The black nurse who has psychic powers.
- 11:32It was so in your face from front to back the whole time.
- 11:36They kept on it.
- 11:37I do have a question about the nurse.
- 11:38You can't tell me they wrote more and then didn't get around to using it.
- 11:42She says things like, leave that to us.
- 11:45Who's us?
- 11:46What are you?
- 11:47It's our business.
- 11:48Don Cheadle can give people glimpses.
- 11:51Yeah, he's a magical black man.
- 11:53Maybe she's a magical black woman.
- 11:55There were some good jams in this film.
- 11:57Yeah, there was a couple of black flag songs and that song at the end.
- 12:01What was that one?
- 12:02Leader of the pack.
- 12:03Yeah, I really didn't understand that choice.
- 12:07I mean, if I'm going to choose anything from the movie to not understand, I don't know
- 12:11why I'm saying that one.
- 12:13But the wall of sound, like the Phil Spector vibe somehow made sense to me aesthetically
- 12:17with the house burning down.
- 12:19I don't know if it's because of what we know about Phil Spector or I don't know.
- 12:22It just for me, it made some sort of harmony together.
- 12:26But you're right.
- 12:27I can't quite decode exactly why that song Phil Spector ghost name ghost movie and all
- 12:33tracks.
- 12:34There are levels to this movie.
- 12:35I didn't even realize we're there.
- 12:36I know.
- 12:37All right.
- 12:38We're going to call it now.
- 12:39This movie wins.
- 12:40We're done.
- 12:41So let's discuss the sex in two timelines because it's been brought up a few times and
- 12:49there's no description for people who.
- 12:51In that situation, Nicolas Cage is having sex with the daughter of the chick that he's
- 12:57been hooking up with who sees dead people.
- 12:59Billy Mary with our Billy Mary because it's Mary, his wife's name and Billy, the daughter's
- 13:05name.
- 13:06He's having sex with the DM.
- 13:10Nick just pounded away on a BM.
- 13:13This is terrible.
- 13:16This is our content.
- 13:17So he's pounding away on a BM and he's having like flashbacks to like banging away on his
- 13:25wife in the before times.
- 13:27It was in his truck cab.
- 13:28I mean, I don't really know what happens in these movies.
- 13:32Or in truck cabs.
- 13:33Oh, I know what happens in truck cabs.
- 13:35We've seen two movies now where we see things happen in truck cabs.
- 13:38So he's banging away on her and having visions of it being his wife.
- 13:45What's creepy is then he pulls out his own journal and starts reading from it.
- 13:49Well, yeah.
- 13:50OK, so yeah.
- 13:51That cop smacked me.
- 13:52Like what in the world is going on?
- 13:54She's from memories.
- 13:55Mary's like, just read to me from memories.
- 13:58And he does.
- 14:01Memories by Nicolas Cage.
- 14:03Yeah.
- 14:04Which if you'd like to know my favorite quote, it is just Mary says, read to me from memories,
- 14:11Joe.
- 14:12And Joe says again.
- 14:15All sexing.
- 14:16And this is everything that he reads.
- 14:18And this is like a memoir or some kind of story written by Nicolas Cage that for some
- 14:24reason he just has a manuscript of.
- 14:27And it gives a little like, I enjoyed the art to try out.
- 14:31You rode your hat penis and she straddled my mouth.
- 14:37Your tongue's mingled above me.
- 14:39Your peach juice cascaded over and upon my golden cock.
- 14:44And I knew that we were a family, a tribe, our heat melting the snow beneath us on top
- 14:51of the mountain as the Inuit applauded.
- 14:56Just brutal.
- 14:57I totally brutal.
- 14:58And I could give or take most of that until he got down to and the Inuit applauded.
- 15:04How could you take most of that?
- 15:06I was like, yeah, that's happened to you in your life.
- 15:09You can handle that.
- 15:11I'm pretty callous.
- 15:12I don't know, but having Nicholas Cage describe a freeway.
- 15:17Fair.
- 15:18That's fine.
- 15:19But now you've got Eskimos watching in the background, golf clapping.
- 15:25And it's like, this is good.
- 15:27This is exactly what I want.
- 15:30Nicholas Cage to write in his memoir.
- 15:33Oh, very cagey.
- 15:34He truly did write that.
- 15:36Also, I read that he wrote that poem specifically for this movie.
- 15:41Amazing.
- 15:42I don't remember.
- 15:43I was doing some research.
- 15:44It'd be weird if he wrote it for anything else, though.
- 15:46That's a good point.
- 15:47I found the through line of these two films.
- 15:52Weird shit Nick Cage is into.
- 15:53I have something for that for Vampire's Kiss.
- 15:56This movie is kind of all over the place.
- 15:59I don't really know how to explain it.
- 16:00I genuinely enjoyed Nick Cage's performance for the most part.
- 16:03It's weird that we've seen, we're halfway through this now, we've seen 38 Nick Cage
- 16:10films, 32 Nick Cage films.
- 16:14I went to art school.
- 16:15That's why I do a Nick Cage podcast.
- 16:18We've seen 30, we've seen the cage and 32 roles right now.
- 16:21And every time we see him, for the most part, I don't see Nick Cage doing a bit.
- 16:25He's a good actor.
- 16:27I believe to his Joe.
- 16:29Yeah, he played super just drunk, trashy, traumatized trucker.
- 16:35Realistically, it met all my expectations of drunk, trashy, traumatized truckers.
- 16:43We've definitely seen him act drunk poorly and be not believable.
- 16:47We've seen him do it really well.
- 16:48We've seen him do it really well as well.
- 16:49He's very inconsistent in his drunk.
- 16:52I was going to say my favorite moment of acting in this film was the first scene where he's
- 16:57wandering through the truck stop and looking at all the chips and soda and he's drinking
- 17:03a bit gulp or whatever.
- 17:05I really felt like I was in that truck stop.
- 17:08It elicited the feeling of being in a space like that with the big, bright lights at early
- 17:14o'clock in the morning and hearing some lady getting choked out in the bathroom.
- 17:19Classic truck stop.
- 17:20Classic home in there.
- 17:21You know.
- 17:22And you gotta put your ho-ho down.
- 17:23Yeah, he turns down the hostess, drinks at the counter, which I don't understand.
- 17:30I do love...
- 17:31You mean the dessert bar?
- 17:32But yeah, he was good being down and out.
- 17:34I found it far less believable when he was frolicking in the hose.
- 17:39Oh yeah.
- 17:40Okay, so there's a few times in this film where we see something that might be a dream
- 17:46sequence.
- 17:47Like when he gets to Julie's house the first time, she invites him in and then it just
- 17:52cuts to them like rutting on the couch.
- 17:55Then they go inside.
- 17:56Is that the word you want to use?
- 17:57Who says just rutting?
- 17:58It's a common term for getting down.
- 18:03Gross.
- 18:04Like deer.
- 18:05I know a lot of Australian podcasts.
- 18:09This is about a truck driver.
- 18:12Nothing he does is nice.
- 18:14He's not making love.
- 18:16He's rutting.
- 18:17He was prone boning.
- 18:18But he has a vision of fucking this woman on the couch before he goes in the house,
- 18:23which is just sloppy editing.
- 18:24I now realize.
- 18:25But is he maybe psychic?
- 18:27Or you know, he's just goal oriented.
- 18:30Also, alright, you find out that the soul of your dead wife is in Billy.
- 18:36Play it cool dude.
- 18:39Why are you just waiting for her to run down to the store real quick to have an affair?
- 18:44Cool it.
- 18:45I don't think his ex-wife's ghost is all that good at coolin'.
- 18:49I mean, so they do establish that she had been at the funny farm for a while.
- 18:56I glazed over that.
- 18:57Yeah.
- 18:58I didn't catch that.
- 18:59I didn't catch that she was in the nuthouse.
- 19:01She wasn't doing so good.
- 19:02She doesn't do good on her own.
- 19:03I mean, crazy is sexy.
- 19:05And it turns out the way her and their daughter died was he went on a three day run and her
- 19:13cigarette lit the house on fire.
- 19:14Well, she killed him.
- 19:15You go ahead.
- 19:16You say it.
- 19:17That's what he believes is what I'm saying.
- 19:19And then we later learn the truth.
- 19:22Which is that she killed her daughter and herself.
- 19:25In a plea for attention.
- 19:27Which is wild.
- 19:28I've definitely known some people who would do something like this.
- 19:33Like, not to that extreme.
- 19:36But like, I don't think anybody's gonna like...
- 19:40No, it's just like I've dated some chicks who've done and said some shit.
- 19:44Or it's like, no, your thinking's not right there.
- 19:48You cheated on me.
- 19:49It's not my fault.
- 19:50But she was just trying to be like, oh, he'll...
- 19:53She kept saying, I thought you'd show up before.
- 19:55It's like, okay.
- 19:56She's not good at making a safe experiment of killing the child though.
- 20:02That's one of those safe experiments.
- 20:04I don't know any good way of like...
- 20:07He's not gonna show up if there's a stopper on the knife.
- 20:11Do knives have stoppers?
- 20:12Most of them do, yeah, for sure.
- 20:16So it's gotta be a real knife with no safety on it.
- 20:20And you put that in the baby and then your husband will show up before the baby dies.
- 20:24It's good.
- 20:25So welcome to cage match.
- 20:28So when they get back to their old house, which is only half burnt out, because he says
- 20:33like they died in a fire, but the living room wasn't burnt out.
- 20:39The baby's bedroom wasn't burnt out, although there was a burnt jack in the box in it.
- 20:44If you watch the trailer, you're expecting this very jumpy horror film with burned jack
- 20:49in the boxes and like, you should see how bad I am with a knife.
- 20:53Like comments like that.
- 20:54But then you watch the film and it isn't jumpy like that at all.
- 20:57Even when they do the dream sequences, it feels like the tone, like psychologically,
- 21:02doesn't really shift all that much.
- 21:04Yeah, is he psychic?
- 21:05Is this a vision?
- 21:06Like, it's really hard to tell what the hell the mood is in these different worlds and
- 21:11to patch it all together.
- 21:12I thought it was a little manic in that regard.
- 21:14Written by the director also.
- 21:16Yeah.
- 21:17And then we get to see Nick Cage in a banana hammock.
- 21:19Man, and it's awesome.
- 21:21It's just what I pictured, which is a lot of like my body with Nicolas Cage's face.
- 21:28I make this happen all the time.
- 21:31You make it the opposite direction where it's Nicolas Cage's body and my face.
- 21:35I just want this to be shared for anyone who's not on Reddit.
- 21:38Peter, please describe how I was described in the last City of Angels poster.
- 21:43Oh, fuck.
- 21:44What was what was the exact the exact quote was?
- 21:46We need to just give a shout out to whatever user it was.
- 21:49Hang on.
- 21:50Yeah, we'll find it.
- 21:51And also, Nick, this is where the comments are, apparently.
- 21:53Yeah, Reddit is where the comments are.
- 21:55I was going to ask how do fans reach out to you?
- 21:58Yeah.
- 21:59So Reddit would be the primary way that people could interact with us.
- 22:02And it's just a cage match pod.
- 22:04We also do try and make our Patreon have some interesting shit on there.
- 22:08I try and throw little clips and goofs and previews into that.
- 22:14And that's patreon.com slash cage match.
- 22:18So on Reddit, we had posted about our previous episode, which was City of Angels against
- 22:24Kiss of Death.
- 22:25So I ended up doing a Photoshop job of City of Angels, which is like a really hokey.
- 22:29Oh, it's so good.
- 22:30It's like holding and kissing.
- 22:32It's very, very sweet and precious.
- 22:35One of my ex wife's favorite films.
- 22:37Oh, interesting.
- 22:38Yeah.
- 22:39It's why you're not married anymore because this is our favorite film.
- 22:44So in this particular Photoshop job, Nick ended up as Nick Cage and Sean ended up as
- 22:48Meg Ryan and Reddit user heartsplayer721 commented, makes Meg Ryan look like a blonde Robert Downey
- 22:57Jr.
- 22:58I'll take it.
- 22:59That is going on my dating profile.
- 23:03You look charming in this picture.
- 23:05I look charming everywhere motherfucker.
- 23:07It's only when I open my mouth that things kind of get sketchy.
- 23:11We now know that you look good with tits and blonde hair though.
- 23:13All right.
- 23:14Oh, what were we talking about?
- 23:15Oh yeah, this movie.
- 23:16It ends weird.
- 23:17Nick Cage loses his shit.
- 23:18Julie shows up with Billy's boyfriend.
- 23:21Julie gets shot, has a tussle with Mary's spirit.
- 23:24Billy comes back.
- 23:26They leave.
- 23:27Everyone else dies.
- 23:28Yup.
- 23:29They're just desperate to do a David Lynch homage at the end with Wally's sound and
- 23:32tragedy and it's just clunky as hell.
- 23:36Like his death.
- 23:37Can we just talk about that a little bit?
- 23:38Like what the fuck?
- 23:39Oh, that's right.
- 23:40He lights himself on fire.
- 23:41And smokes a cigarette.
- 23:42And then puts a cigarette on himself.
- 23:43I'm pretty sure if I lit myself on fire, even if I was really resolved to do that, I'm almost
- 23:51positive that the second I was on fire I would be screaming my fucking ass off.
- 23:56He might have been suffering from some real like disassociative stuff at that point because
- 24:01he was pretty fucking ganked out.
- 24:03Yeah, he was pretty weird in that scene.
- 24:05I just, I like you.
- 24:06He was half in the... he was between worlds himself.
- 24:10I do like... that's when he should have cracked his sparkle letter.
- 24:16I do like the whole sequence of picks up gas can, pours it on himself, lights cigarette,
- 24:25is on fire, takes one drag, then puts the cigarette on himself.
- 24:30As if he just needs to hurt that little bit more.
- 24:32And you could see the flame.
- 24:34You could see the cigarette going.
- 24:35It wasn't it wasn't in any way overshadowed by the giant flames engulfing his body from
- 24:41the gasoline.
- 24:42You could see the little cigarette burn going into his heart.
- 24:44It was a new unique flame.
- 24:48And then there is this second ending.
- 24:51That's right.
- 24:52You saw that coming.
- 24:53Where, yeah, where a young Joe takes a shotgun while his dad is yelling at his mom and points
- 25:01the gun at his dad and his dad's like, finally stand up for yourself and then credits.
- 25:07It seems weird to add that at the very end.
- 25:09It's like, okay, the movie's over.
- 25:11It's exactly right for this film.
- 25:14It made no sense.
- 25:15It didn't fit at all.
- 25:16It's perfect for this movie.
- 25:17Yeah.
- 25:18For this one, there was there were no fun facts I could find by like Google, but I
- 25:20did find the most amazing user reviews.
- 25:23And I want to read just a couple to you.
- 25:26One of those rare Nicolas Cage movies, when he comes to play, what makes watching him
- 25:29feel like work?
- 25:31If you saw Mandy and wished more Nicolas Cage movies were dark, weird, and personal, watch
- 25:36Between Worlds and be careful what you wish for.
- 25:39Cage makes four of these a year and usually two of them are good, so Between Worlds isn't
- 25:44one of the good ones.
- 25:48So my quote is when he first meets Julie and she asks him to be as a family, he pulls out
- 25:55a picture of his wife and daughter and he goes, wife and daughter, you like whoops,
- 26:02they're dead.
- 26:04You know, I don't have a quote.
- 26:05I just have the image of Joe getting sprayed by a garden hose while he's doing the Captain
- 26:12Morgan leg step in the air.
- 26:16So profound.
- 26:17Yeah, all over a motorcycle like washing a motorcycle.
- 26:22Like everybody has to be on top of it to do it.
- 26:24I just want to shout out that I think a lot of the sex scenes were really inspired by
- 26:29showgirls.
- 26:31The way that Billy is throwing herself around on Nick Cage's lap feels very reminiscent
- 26:36of the pool sex scene and showgirls.
- 26:41You know, and that might be a subtle David Lynch homage.
- 26:44That's true.
- 26:45Yeah.
- 26:46I'm wondering if Nick Cage has like a contract bump like a significant contract bump for
- 26:52sex scenes where he's fully disrobed because in his more recent movies that we've seen
- 26:57him have sex scenes in now, there's always and I'm really just referring to Drive Angry
- 27:02in this, there's clothing like he had the banana hammock on or in Drive Angry he still
- 27:09had pants on.
- 27:10I don't think he's willing to take his pants off and do the old bump and grind.
- 27:15No, I don't think he's willing to take his pants off in general.
- 27:18I mean, he took his pants off for this and we saw the banana hammock.
- 27:22And two of you angels.
- 27:23Now, again, stunt dick.
- 27:24Stunt butt too.
- 27:25A butt and a dick are different.
- 27:26A butt and a dick are different.
- 27:27I understand that.
- 27:28Wait, what?
- 27:29How?
- 27:30A butt is not a dick twin.
- 27:31Alright, I do have a quote for this.
- 27:32Oh, okay.
- 27:33Sorry, Peter.
- 27:34So at one point, Julie comes in and is like, so do you want a beer?
- 27:47And his response was, does the tin man have a sheet metal cock?
- 27:50That's right, I forgot about that one.
- 27:53Classic.
- 27:54Gary.
- 27:55Earlier you talked about the whole film being manic and disjointed.
- 28:02Also shout out mental illness.
- 28:03Shout out mental illness.
- 28:04That's right.
- 28:05If you've got mental health problems.
- 28:07That's the other connection of these two films.
- 28:09Just find yourself a lady who talks to ghosts.
- 28:11Now you have to have interdimensional sex.
- 28:15But I think both of these films, at first I had no idea why these two films were put
- 28:20together in this.
- 28:23Random chance.
- 28:24Okay, well, let's pretend you made an intentional choice.
- 28:27We will pretend that we did.
- 28:29Because I do feel that both films have this in common.
- 28:32Maybe as a complete Nicolas Cage amateur, maybe this is a broader theme here.
- 28:37But the movies as a whole, both of them, I think really embodied this thing about Nicolas
- 28:43Cage of there being this question of is he doing something that's just trash or is he
- 28:50creating something that's really interesting, meaningful, interesting art?
- 28:56And his acting style is pretty wild out there, manic, disjointed, however you want to call
- 29:02it.
- 29:03Both of these films are that as well.
- 29:06I think the difference is that Between Worlds doesn't do it very successfully, I would argue.
- 29:12And I think Vampire's Kiss nails it.
- 29:14I think that the way that Vampire's Kiss is fucking crazy is really genius.
- 29:21Well this was something I actually wanted to talk about this week and start doing is
- 29:24where do we put this on the bad actor, bad movie, good actor, good movie spectrum for
- 29:31Nick Cage?
- 29:32Is this good acting in a bad movie?
- 29:33Is it bad acting in a bad movie?
- 29:35Where would you put this?
- 29:36You've seen the Venn diagram of this, right?
- 29:38Yeah.
- 29:39I think, you know, I thought he was alright in this up until the end.
- 29:43I wouldn't say his performance was bad.
- 29:46He put the work in.
- 29:47I wouldn't say it's like a top 50% for him.
- 29:51I think he said, of course not.
- 29:54Honestly I disliked the story so much, the film from like a director and writing standpoint
- 30:00so much that I would say it's great acting on his part because he actually made it a
- 30:05little bit watchable for me, honestly.
- 30:07Because I just thought the whole thing was horrendous and aesthetically speaking, what
- 30:11you were saying Roxanne, I think the 30 years that separate these films from 88 to 2018,
- 30:18just the general aesthetic of the two was so stark.
- 30:21I think all the warmth and the color, the texture, watching Vampire's Kiss to me visually
- 30:27is so interesting and this was grotesque.
- 30:30I just loved the aesthetic of Vampire's Kiss so much more.
- 30:34I was trying to do a lot of the watching for these around a trip to Las Vegas and so some
- 30:42of it happened to be just like I was watching movies on airplanes.
- 30:46Oh, that's perfect for this film.
- 30:47I had watched Between Worlds beforehand and I was like, oh okay, I shouldn't watch Between
- 30:51Worlds again on the flight.
- 30:53You should not watch that movie in a public place.
- 30:55I know there's going to be a lot of boobs and stuff like that and I don't want to have
- 30:59to absurd as funny.
- 31:00Actually surprisingly few boobs.
- 31:01They're usually covered up.
- 31:02There's a lot of side notes.
- 31:03There's very little nipple but there's a lot of boobs.
- 31:07I think that's breaking the fifth wall because then you're watching that scene where they're
- 31:10doing the unconsensual kinky sex act on a plane, unconsensually showing that act to
- 31:16your seat mates.
- 31:18That's gangster.
- 31:19Which is double negative so totally consensual.
- 31:23I grew up in San Francisco.
- 31:24That's how this works.
- 31:25Yes.
- 31:26Well, I ended up watching Vampire's Kiss and then the flight attendant showed up as
- 31:31soon as the first top came off so I had that experience.
- 31:35I don't like try to cover my laptop.
- 31:37I'm embarrassed for myself now.
- 31:38Did you really put your hands in front of it?
- 31:39Oh, that's perfect.
- 31:40I was just like, don't look at it.
- 31:41Don't look at my shing.
- 31:42I closed it with the volume switched from my headphones to the computer.
- 31:43You know the only thing that would make that story better?
- 31:44I just want a sparkling water please.
- 31:45The only thing that would make that story better, flight attendant walked up behind you with
- 31:46Hayden and just stood there for a while.
- 31:47I was like, I'm sorry.
- 31:48I'm sorry.
- 31:49I'm sorry.
- 31:50I'm sorry.
- 31:51I'm sorry.
- 31:52I'm sorry.
- 31:53I'm sorry.
- 31:54I'm sorry.
- 31:55I'm sorry.
- 31:56I'm sorry.
- 31:57I'm sorry.
- 31:58The only thing that would make that story better, flight attendant walked up behind you with
- 32:01Hayden and just stood there for a while.
- 32:02No, that would've been fine.
- 32:03I would have turned the volume up then.
- 32:04I did get a guy as soon as I shut it and she left, the guy across the aisle for me was
- 32:10like, hey man, I really like that you're watching that movie.
- 32:14That's one of my favorite movies.
- 32:15Was it Nicholas Cage?
- 32:18No.
- 32:19No.
- 32:20He's a guy from Portland.
- 32:21Shout out to guy from Portland who works for Seattle Lighting.
- 32:25Did you tell him about our podcast?
- 32:26I did.
- 32:27Check it out. So if you listen, thanks, buddy.
- 32:30Cool. Vampires kiss.
- 32:33Nailed it.
- 32:35That's the best one today.
- 32:36I always do the landing.
- 32:39All right.
- 32:39So this is why you guys wanted to be on this podcast.
- 32:41So why don't you sell us vampires kiss real quick?
- 32:44What's this film about?
- 32:47What isn't this film about, really?
- 32:50I agree. It's mythic in proportion.
- 32:52So, OK, we talked about a second ending for Between Worlds.
- 32:55I thought the second ending of this film was also extremely meaningful and poignant.
- 33:00Straight to the ending.
- 33:01Well, this is what I like.
- 33:03Well, it's actually it's the beginning.
- 33:05The beginning of the ending, they form a circle because we're talking about vampires and eternity.
- 33:08It's all there. It's really beautiful.
- 33:10I thought this film was really powerful.
- 33:12Really stoked to be talking about it.
- 33:14Yeah, I think it's about New York City.
- 33:16I think it's about U.S. America.
- 33:17I think it's about capitalism.
- 33:19It's about race. It's about so many different things.
- 33:21I think that the the monster motif is so it's such a powerful container and you can put so much into it.
- 33:28I think that's why we're just going to see for as long as we live monster movies.
- 33:32You're going to see the zombies and the ghosts and the vampires are never going away
- 33:36because they point in almost any direction you want them to go.
- 33:40And I thought this film in particular, they used the vampire just exquisitely,
- 33:46like really, really well done.
- 33:47Yeah, I agree.
- 33:49So for context, Gary and I came to this film in the month of October
- 33:53when the Criterion Channel was running a series of vampire movies.
- 33:59And so we watched a bunch of vampire films all in a row.
- 34:03I'm sure maybe some of the people listening to this are much better acquainted with vampire stuff than me.
- 34:09And me too.
- 34:10I was not me.
- 34:14We're vampire noobs.
- 34:16Haven't seen Twilight.
- 34:17But we geeked out, we watched a bunch.
- 34:19We went hard on vampires for a minute.
- 34:22So if somebody wants to make a sex joke, feel free.
- 34:25And something I learned as we did this was that there's roughly two categories of vampire films.
- 34:31There's vampires who are out to feed or vampires who are ready to lay down their eternal burden and die.
- 34:38And this movie is kind of neither, which really makes it stand out in the vampire canon.
- 34:45And I think, yeah, so some really interesting things.
- 34:49Basically, Nick Cage's character in this film starts out as a normal human who is kind of hoity toity.
- 34:56He works at a... what are you laughing at?
- 34:57Well, normal if you call a sadistic capitalist normal, yes.
- 35:02Well, which it is.
- 35:04Just if I can interject real quick.
- 35:06Nicolas Cage plays Peter Lowe.
- 35:08Maria Conchita Alonso plays Alva.
- 35:11Jennifer Beals is Rachel.
- 35:12Elizabeth Ashley is Dr. Glaser.
- 35:14So Nicolas Cage's character is a... works at a fancy literary, like a publishing agency in New York City.
- 35:23He's desperately, it seems, searching for love, connection, sex, something.
- 35:30We don't really exactly know, but he's after women in bars and looking to fill something in his life.
- 35:38And meaning. He's in Jungian analysis.
- 35:41Yeah, he has a therapist and...
- 35:43An analyst.
- 35:45That's correct. An analyst.
- 35:47Up in a high tower in Manhattan.
- 35:49So he's not in a happy place.
- 35:53And one of the women that he takes home turns out to be a vampire who bites him and continues to feed on him.
- 36:00With the lamest pickup line of all time.
- 36:03He leans over his shoulder and says, I like your earrings.
- 36:07It always works.
- 36:11Yeah, juxtaposed against his pickup line later in the movie.
- 36:16He just gives her that solid look.
- 36:20Takes a chomp.
- 36:24We'll talk about those teeth later.
- 36:25More physical jokes for all the people out there on our audio podcast.
- 36:29Yeah, that's Nick's new thing.
- 36:31Really big on this.
- 36:33It's very avant-garde, Dick. I love it.
- 36:35I think Nick Cage will be proud of it.
- 36:37I just discovered visual comedy recently and I'm trying to share it with people.
- 36:41I think it's going to be a big craze.
- 36:44So Rachel, the vampire who he meets and bites him.
- 36:49Does she?
- 36:51I mean, this is really what this movie comes down to me.
- 36:54Does he think he's becoming a vampire?
- 36:56Or is this just a guy in the city who becomes the raving lunatic on the corner?
- 37:01Oh, you know, if she doesn't bite him and he actually is just becoming more and more himself
- 37:08as the picture of like an unhinged white male American hero capitalist publishing Wall Street guy.
- 37:16I mean, that's even more terrifying than a vampire.
- 37:19I mean, that's what this movie is about.
- 37:22After his first night with Rachel, he goes to shave and he's like humming to himself in the morning
- 37:26and he cuts himself shaving.
- 37:28That's when he first see the bandaid after she bit him.
- 37:32And then he goes into his bedroom with the coffee and he hands it to him and he just starts shaking.
- 37:37Right, because there's nobody there.
- 37:39That's a brilliant insight because they break one of the rules of vampire films.
- 37:43If he is a vampire, which is that she keeps feeding on him after he thinks he's a vampire,
- 37:48which that's no, that's a no-go.
- 37:50You can't, vampires don't feed on each other.
- 37:52There's all sorts of levels for how to turn somebody.
- 37:56Usually in my experience, there's an exchange where it would be like the vampire feeds, drains,
- 38:02and then replenishes with their own tainted blood, which we never see.
- 38:07So like a lot of times, like the familiar or whatever the thrall of the vampire would be used just for feeding
- 38:15and then they would get like they wouldn't be drained and then replenished,
- 38:19but they would get like a taste of it.
- 38:20And that's how like Renfield and whatnot would have his powers.
- 38:24It's a boon given through the blood, usually to turn somebody in my experience of vampires.
- 38:35Turning people.
- 38:36Yeah.
- 38:37Peter, have you ever seen Nick in daylight?
- 38:40Not once.
- 38:42Interesting.
- 38:43I do always wait for you to invite me into the house, too.
- 38:46Fuck he does!
- 38:47Yeah.
- 38:48Shit.
- 38:49It's not the locked door at all.
- 38:52What I'm thinking about right now is like I feel like I invited myself onto this podcast to sound smart.
- 38:57Now I feel very dumb because I feel like I missed the whole point.
- 38:59But also that's wonderful because you know, it's right there in the title, Vampire's Kiss.
- 39:04Like he maybe he doesn't get bitten.
- 39:06He gets just the kiss and everything is just in his mind.
- 39:10Let's break these things down.
- 39:11It certainly tracks when he runs into her later, too.
- 39:14Yeah.
- 39:14No, like let's break this down because so he meets Rachel at a bar, takes her home.
- 39:18Also hang on.
- 39:19I got to talk.
- 39:19Did you notice that it was David Hyde Pierce at the bar?
- 39:22Yes.
- 39:23I'm Josie.
- 39:23Call that right away.
- 39:25She was like, yeah, David Hyde Pierce and Ben Stiller's sister are having a chat at the bar before he goes and hits on.
- 39:31I did not catch Ben Stiller's sister, but I didn't dig into the credits on that one.
- 39:36I would have recognized her.
- 39:38So the movie starts with him in therapy talking about how he brought this woman home.
- 39:43He was like really into her.
- 39:45But immediately was just the next day was like, get out.
- 39:48Meets Rachel.
- 39:50They go home.
- 39:50She gets she gets the chompin.
- 39:52But then like the very next scene is him giving her coffee in the morning, but she's not there.
- 39:56And that's when he starts to get a little weird.
- 39:58And then she starts appearing in his office, like in his bedroom when he's supposed to go meet the woman he's dating at the beginning of the film, but he doesn't leave his apartment because Rachel doesn't want him to.
- 40:09We you know, we keep seeing Rachel over and over again and she has the fangs.
- 40:13And then at the end of the film, she's got the good thing.
- 40:15And at the end of the film when he's after he's done a bitey murder, he sees Rachel again and she's mocking him because you know, they're nothing alike.
- 40:23And his imaginary vampire girlfriend has an imaginary boyfriend and then he goes and confronts her on the dance floor.
- 40:31Also, shout out all the vampire movies have industrial clubs, industrial dance clubs, goes and grabs her on the dance floor.
- 40:40And he's like, remember me?
- 40:41And she's like, oh, yeah, you're Rob Lowe.
- 40:44No, Peter Lowe.
- 40:46Peter Lowe.
- 40:47It's like, oh, you're Peter, right?
- 40:49Yeah, we met.
- 40:50And he's like, you break up with me.
- 40:52And like she has no idea who he is.
- 40:54Like this has all been like an affectation of his mind.
- 40:57Like I grew up in San Francisco.
- 41:00There are weird people in San Francisco.
- 41:01And you always wonder how someone gets to like screaming on the street corner.
- 41:05And this whole second second half of this movie for me was just that's where that guy started.
- 41:10The first act of this film.
- 41:12I'm like, this needs to stop.
- 41:13I did not enjoy it.
- 41:14As soon as that idea clicked from him, like, oh, this is this is heart wrenching.
- 41:20This is this is this is amazing.
- 41:22Yeah, truly.
- 41:23And I think something that's important, too, is the way that it shows not only how the guy ends up like that on the street corner,
- 41:29but it connects that lunatic on the street corner to the guy in the office who's harassing his workers, who's tormenting his secretary, all that.
- 41:40His most vampiric act in the whole film is what he does with all the I mean, when he hangs up late, when he hangs up the phone with the guy who's like, oh, it's totally chill.
- 41:50Don't worry about it.
- 41:51I don't even need that.
- 41:52It's it's a memento.
- 41:53Yeah, that's what I was looking for is a meaningless memento.
- 41:56And then she's desperate to be relieved of this responsibility.
- 42:00And he goes berserk on her.
- 42:02It was so brutal.
- 42:03I love the dynamic of Peter as a boss in quotes in this situation.
- 42:09To me, he comes across as such a low level executive in this movie.
- 42:17I think the stress leads him to over project a lot and kind of make these power plays in like a mental capacity against his secretary,
- 42:30because she's the only one that he really has any control or any power.
- 42:34That's like the limit of his control, even when he's talking to the other executives after he confronts Alva in the restroom.
- 42:44Yeah, when he chases her in the bathroom.
- 42:45To that point, one of the things I read about this film is the affectation of his voice that very mid Atlantic.
- 42:53So British.
- 42:54I read that he was sort of modeling himself after his father and the styling of Americans who want to sound fancier than they are.
- 43:01Okay, yeah, I like the drum right and run for president about it.
- 43:05That is called the transatlantic accent that came about in the late 1800s, 1900s.
- 43:12And it was a way of people in the East Coast, specifically kind of affecting a semi British, semi American completely its own thing.
- 43:23Yeah, we're back to being a history podcast.
- 43:25Fuck yeah.
- 43:26The whole dialect podcast.
- 43:28The whole aspect is that of Peter's it's not Nicholas Cage's performance.
- 43:33The character of Peter wants people to think he's a bit of an aristocrat and smarter than he actually is.
- 43:38So he puts on that performance and it goes in and out.
- 43:42Yeah, his accent so inconsistent.
- 43:45Maybe that works well in totally.
- 43:48It further is the point that he's he's a phony.
- 43:51I mean, to the to the point you were making Nick about his power over Alva.
- 43:55It like it almost makes a fool of him like, oh, look who he has power over in this society.
- 44:01Someone who has very, very little power and one dress.
- 44:06One one tablecloth.
- 44:08She lives with her mother and her brother and they live in the birds.
- 44:14Yeah, exactly.
- 44:15Right. And that's his kingdom.
- 44:17My boss chased me into the bathroom the other day.
- 44:21I think my boss is going to like hurt me or rape me and everyone's just like get to fucking work.
- 44:26Well, you know, you got to work.
- 44:28That's the capitalism side of it all.
- 44:30Which is going back to your old thing about this being like the true vampire.
- 44:34Yeah, I think so.
- 44:35That's exactly what what he says.
- 44:38What Joe says.
- 44:39Tucker Joe, you got to work.
- 44:42It all comes together.
- 44:44Truly. I thought the opening scene was really.
- 44:46We're now bootstraps podcast.
- 44:50Grab them. Let's go.
- 44:53But I really liked the opening scene that the first visual that you get is of a long canyon of New York City streets.
- 45:00And all of the brake lights are on and all the lights are red.
- 45:04And so you're seeing like the red arterial veins of the city and they've got the blood in them.
- 45:10I thought that was really deft and comparing that to the heavy handedness of between worlds.
- 45:15It's like they just show it to you for a second and then they're like into the story.
- 45:19And there's so much of that.
- 45:20Like, yeah, even just missing that point that he never really does get bit.
- 45:24Like there's there's just so much to sort through in this film.
- 45:27Because I think we only see his neck one time as big.
- 45:29And that's when he imagines Rachel is going to bite him.
- 45:33Yeah. When he takes it off her Rachel to bite him again.
- 45:35One point, I thought the bandage changed sides.
- 45:37Well, there's a lot of mirrors. There's a lot of mirrors.
- 45:40He's like and to the mirror stuff, he starts not being able to see his own reflection that we can.
- 45:45And that's right. An issue. Where am I?
- 45:49Where am I? You're in the bathroom.
- 45:51Trying to take a dump.
- 45:53This movie at the hour mark gets to be one of his best movies ever.
- 45:59The movie is good from the opening shot.
- 46:02What Gary's talking about with those establishing shots in the beginning.
- 46:07I loved the score of this movie.
- 46:10The score of this was so well done.
- 46:13Truly. But then when you add that to these opening shots,
- 46:17like it's all like dawn or dusk.
- 46:20There's a tension built into the way it's shot that I think really carries into the movie.
- 46:27And it adds a lot of uneasiness.
- 46:30I mean, certainly on a subsequent watching, you can look out for all these little things.
- 46:36But my initial journey through this film was there is not a through line here
- 46:42until there is and it's a hard shift, but it's so good.
- 46:46When was that moment for you?
- 46:48It's at the very specific line.
- 46:50Tell him I'm in a meeting.
- 46:52Well, what if I'm in a meeting?
- 46:56No, it's when Alba finally finds the contract.
- 46:59She comes into his office and he loses it.
- 47:04Like Rachel's sucking on his neck and he opens the door.
- 47:07She's like, I found it. He's like, it's too late, Alpha.
- 47:10But no, it's not too late.
- 47:12Too late, too late.
- 47:14He starts chasing her down the stairs through the building, like in the sub basement.
- 47:19It is such a good American Psycho chase.
- 47:21Yeah, absolutely.
- 47:22There's a lot of parallels to be drawn from that.
- 47:25But he chases her down in the basement.
- 47:27She has a gun.
- 47:28It's got blanks in it that she got from her brother and he's confronting her there.
- 47:33And at this point, he's just like he's convinced he's a vampire.
- 47:35He can't see his reflection anymore.
- 47:37And he's telling her to shoot him and she keeps shooting him on the floor
- 47:40because she can't shoot him.
- 47:41It's like, no, shoot me, shoot me.
- 47:44And he attacks her and there's a sexual assault.
- 47:48I mean, the ultimate vampiric act.
- 47:51And then they read it large.
- 47:52Usually it's just alluded to the sucking on the neck is alluding to rape.
- 47:56It's alluding to sexual assault and Peter Lowe does it all to your point.
- 48:00And it's like he's a vampire as just a regular ass dude.
- 48:04So like, you know, that's when the whole plot with him losing his mind
- 48:09and the whole out him just being a dick.
- 48:10All about all things like kind of coalesce and goes directly into him
- 48:16running down the street going, I'm a vampire.
- 48:18I'm a vampire. I'm a vampire.
- 48:21And that's when the movie clicked for me because I'm like, I grew up in a big city.
- 48:23Like, I've definitely seen someone running down the street,
- 48:26street screaming something that insane took you that long to get into that.
- 48:31They did. I mean, that's OK.
- 48:32I mean, as I'm just watching the first hour of the film, like,
- 48:35what is this movie trying to be?
- 48:37And it wasn't until then that I realized, oh, this is a dissection of how capitalism,
- 48:42the big city and just all that weighing pressure leads to a mental breakdown.
- 48:48Wants to be seen as this big executive.
- 48:51He has a shitty apartment.
- 48:53That was one thing I noticed about everything he presents himself as.
- 48:56And then like from the very beginning, you see how terrible his apartment is.
- 49:00Like he's got a really small, really narrow kitchen.
- 49:03He with gross ass stove roaches.
- 49:07Speaking of the kitchen, when he comes out of it with the coffee,
- 49:09he hums a Stravinsky tune, correct, Roxanne?
- 49:12And isn't that when Nick Cage cost the film like ten thousand dollars?
- 49:15Correct. Yeah.
- 49:17Oh, my God. I did not.
- 49:18I ran out of money by the end of the film.
- 49:20That's amazing.
- 49:21Well, let's talk about some PETA stuff now, then, right?
- 49:25Oh, yeah, he got in trouble for the.
- 49:27Let's talk about that. He ate a bug. He ate a roach.
- 49:30Water bug. Water bug.
- 49:31But yes, he ate two.
- 49:32He actually takes some of the panache out of it
- 49:35because a cockroach would be way gross.
- 49:37No, no. Water bugs are bigger.
- 49:38Yeah. But the cockroach has the meaty insides.
- 49:41Water bugs. They're they're spongy.
- 49:43They're just made of water. I've eaten both. Trust me.
- 49:46Either way, this was water bugs.
- 49:47If you're watching your calories.
- 49:49Exactly. The caloric density.
- 49:51Yeah. This wasn't in the script.
- 49:53He thought this would be a good thing because it harkened back to Dracula.
- 49:57And he's like, oh, this is what, you know, someone would do.
- 49:59So it was his idea. He immediately regretted it.
- 50:02And what I read is they took three takes to get it done.
- 50:05And he said everything inside of him was telling him not to do it as he was doing.
- 50:09You could tell, like in his face when he's chewing it,
- 50:11because they give you such a direct shot.
- 50:15It's like he's counting dollar bills.
- 50:17As if he like chooses, oh, OK, they're going to seven, eight, ten million dollars.
- 50:23There's no way he made $10 million for this.
- 50:25No, but in his own head, he probably could have hoped for that.
- 50:28That said, from what I read, it seemed like he really, really wanted this part
- 50:34and really, really loved this part and really, really loves this part.
- 50:37He said as recently as a few years ago that this was his favorite movie.
- 50:41Yeah, 2018. He said this was his favorite performance.
- 50:44While he was shooting between, no, while Between Worlds was out.
- 50:47He was digging this one.
- 50:48This was like a GQ interview.
- 50:50When he smashes up his apartment, that was all done in one shot
- 50:53because it was all like real furniture.
- 50:55None of it was stage furniture.
- 50:56Yeah, there's a lot of cameras and let him go to town.
- 50:59I always get excited at a good smash.
- 51:02Yeah, because I want to do that someday.
- 51:06I want to just like be able to go into a room and be like,
- 51:09I'm going to destroy everything and I'm going to destroy that in the weirdest way.
- 51:13Does that not exist?
- 51:14Like, what's with this escape room bullshit?
- 51:16I don't need a problem.
- 51:17I want something to destroy.
- 51:19There are smash rooms.
- 51:20There are smash. Oh, good.
- 51:21I'm glad this problem has been solved.
- 51:23Going back to him being a non-union trucker in the first film,
- 51:28this was a non-union film.
- 51:29That opening scene where he's trying to hail a cab with his date.
- 51:34Apparently, they had to re-film that scene a lot because they were
- 51:37union film workers with bullhorns and like airhorns just ruining the shot.
- 51:42That's really apropos too, because it's almost a film commenting on itself.
- 51:47This whole piece about capitalism.
- 51:49Yeah, and then being a non-union crew or production.
- 51:53Totally. So they could push all their workers to the brink.
- 51:56And if they're going to exploit the imagery of truckers in the movie as they do,
- 52:01then it's the least they could do to acknowledge the fact that the full history
- 52:05of union busting within the trucking industry is a really devastating one
- 52:09and one that has meant that truckers can know most truckers no longer
- 52:13are able to make a living and support a family the way they were used to be.
- 52:17Eat shit, Bezos.
- 52:19That's right.
- 52:19And truck driver used to be at least in this the Northwest,
- 52:24one of the most prolific jobs.
- 52:26Like there were more truck drivers in the state of Oregon than any other job.
- 52:32Now let's talk about yogurt.
- 52:35Fuck you, Nick. I'm great at segues.
- 52:38So who else is turned on by hot yogurt on the feet?
- 52:42Who amongst us isn't?
- 52:45So I like to have yogurt on the feet.
- 52:48According to an associate producer and casting director,
- 52:51Nick Cage requested hot yogurt be poured on his toes to get aroused
- 52:55for the sex scene with Jennifer Beals.
- 52:57Was it necessary for him to be aroused?
- 53:00Yes, because he didn't like her.
- 53:03Apparently he thought she was not interesting.
- 53:06He hated that she was casted for the part.
- 53:08Yeah, he wanted his girlfriend, Patricia Arquette, to be the role.
- 53:11Interesting.
- 53:12OK, here's just the both of the women, Rachel and Jackie,
- 53:17the two chicks that he like picks up at bars, both African-American.
- 53:21Nick, I think that plays into the broader commentary that's happening.
- 53:26Yes, it could be part of a bigger theme.
- 53:28Absolutely, because Alva is also a person of color.
- 53:32So he's expressing all of this libidinal energy, all of this like really intense exchange.
- 53:40Well, all of this predatory nature and stuff, like even just picking up chicks.
- 53:43Except for the one the woman he kills,
- 53:45the woman who's painted as the sort of true victim, as a white woman, blonde woman.
- 53:49Yeah, the prize. The damsel in distress is the white woman.
- 53:52Well, she's the classic, like, victim.
- 53:55Right, exactly.
- 53:56But these other women who play these more sort of complicated roles and.
- 54:01They're prey, they're not victims.
- 54:02We should feel sad for the unsuspecting victim.
- 54:06But like Alva is, you know, she should quit.
- 54:08Right.
- 54:09All of us would be remiss if we didn't just briefly point out the whole
- 54:14theory that Nic Cage is actually a vampire because of that photo from the 1800s.
- 54:18I don't know about it.
- 54:19Have you not heard this?
- 54:20No.
- 54:21Go on.
- 54:21It's the same thing with like Hiao Kian who's like a Highlander.
- 54:25They both have serious Dorian Gray shit.
- 54:27Yeah, no, there's a photo.
- 54:29Someone found a photo in like 2011 from the 1800s that looks shockingly similar to Nicolas Cage.
- 54:37I mean, I feel like we're all just on repeat at some point.
- 54:40Take a picture and we put it up in the future.
- 54:43There's going to be another guy that looks like it.
- 54:45I mean, there's more of a stalker who has a whole thing about like repeating faces.
- 54:48I'm just a skipping record.
- 54:50Like literally every five years, I find somebody who looks exactly like me.
- 54:55I want that photo montage.
- 54:58The only other fun fact I have about this film is apparently at one point Travolta and
- 55:02Stallone were considered for those roles.
- 55:05And Dennis Quaid was cast in it, actually.
- 55:07I missed that.
- 55:08Before there was a whole drama about casting.
- 55:11Right.
- 55:12Yeah, because Cage had wanted it and then backed out and then it was Quaid and then
- 55:17Cage really wanted it back.
- 55:19Wow, that's wild.
- 55:20That almost makes me think like all of the epic and really like artful storytelling that
- 55:25I'm projecting onto this film is totally accidental.
- 55:28Like if they were really thinking of Travolta and Stallone for this, they must not have
- 55:31been trying to do something very highbrow.
- 55:33And I'm over here with my pinky in the air about this film.
- 55:37This is 100% Cage.
- 55:38Like Cage brought the gravitas to this film.
- 55:40For me, there was such a weird experience watching this breakdown that Peter Lowe goes
- 55:47through because the second time I watched the movie, I started to feel some empathy.
- 55:51But I really, it was really hard for me to get to feeling actually any sort of compassion
- 55:57for this person.
- 55:58I think the reason for that was because you're not only watching a mental breakdown, which
- 56:03is something that is this painful experience of suffering and that's very worthy of compassion,
- 56:09but you're also watching him do it in a very particular context of corporate, patriarchal,
- 56:16white supremacist America, where as he is spiraling out and starting to behave more
- 56:25and more aggressively, violently in public, the people around him don't give a shit because
- 56:35his behaviors are so normalized.
- 56:37Right, like the boardroom.
- 56:39Oh, that scene was chilling.
- 56:42She asked for a raise after you assaulted her.
- 56:45What a crazy bitch.
- 56:46Take it out of Attila's paycheck.
- 56:49Fuck you.
- 56:50Well, to that point, also at the end of the film, when he's fully gone, he hallucinates
- 56:56being in the therapist's office saying this whole time he's just looking for love.
- 57:01So the imaginary therapist sets him up with one of her patients and they're perfect for
- 57:05each other for 10 minutes.
- 57:07And then he goes, he just and as he's about to leave the imaginary therapist office, like,
- 57:12oh, by the way, I sexually assaulted a woman.
- 57:15She's like, totally fine.
- 57:16Just a little in release.
- 57:17And I did.
- 57:18That's right.
- 57:19People are murdered in New York every day.
- 57:20But I killed him.
- 57:21I was like, no one's even called the police yet.
- 57:22What are you worried about?
- 57:23And he completely just disassociates from everything he does, imagines the person who's in charge
- 57:34of his mental health telling him it's all fine.
- 57:37Yeah, it's quite prescient of Trump in a way.
- 57:40This whole like, that's right.
- 57:41You just break the law in public and you you brag about it.
- 57:46And then everyone's like, oh, no big deal.
- 57:48It's just a little bit of treason with the Russians.
- 57:50Right.
- 57:51One thing that really stood out to me and I really appreciated from kind of a filmmaking
- 57:56perspective is just how much this like cribs and tributes like classic monster movies.
- 58:02This is one of the most like quotable and memeable Nick Cage movies of all time, like
- 58:07any other like crazy faces.
- 58:08It's either from this or from Wicker Man or Face Off.
- 58:13So much of that is sort of inspired by like old dark German style.
- 58:18Oh, yeah.
- 58:19Like everything has to be these exaggerated monster moves and claws creeping across a
- 58:24bed.
- 58:25All that kind of stuff.
- 58:26Bulging eyes.
- 58:27When he was at the club, it was just straight Nosferatu movements and like bodies.
- 58:32Osture.
- 58:33So I watched this great interview with Nicolas Cage talking about just this because he grew
- 58:38up and loved silent films.
- 58:41And this was a large experiment.
- 58:43And he's like, how can I be a silent film monster in a modern film?
- 58:46Like how can I bring that physical acting to cinema now?
- 58:50When he's dragging the piece of the palette through the street and he just screams out
- 58:55loud, that was my quote to be this point.
- 59:03This is a very quotable movie.
- 59:04So why don't we just round robin this and just until we run out, I can't say it with
- 59:09the right intonation, but I just love the part where he literally says boo.
- 59:12Yeah, that's so ridiculous.
- 59:14So it's after he has assaulted Alva and then has shot himself in the head with her gun
- 59:21that shoots blanks and then he just.
- 59:30He recites the alphabet.
- 59:31Brilliant.
- 59:32So there's a another Nick Cage podcast with this guy who's the host, Nick Darrell Edge,
- 59:41and he's actually going to be a guest on our show in July.
- 59:44And his intro uses the alphabet to spell out cage rage, which is the definition.
- 59:50I'll just jump in with another one.
- 59:53I never miss anything.
- 59:54Not once, not one time.
- 59:55With tons of gestures to his body work in this is incredible.
- 1:00:04I like how he's patching up his patch.
- 1:00:07I was in mortal combat with a fucking bat.
- 1:00:10Give me a break.
- 1:00:11That's a good one.
- 1:00:13One that it was I think when he was in therapy, he says, we're on the bed and suddenly this
- 1:00:19bat swoops down out of nowhere.
- 1:00:21And she says, a bat?
- 1:00:22And he goes, holy shit.
- 1:00:23I can't remember where this one's from, but I just loved it.
- 1:00:28Yeah, well, fuck you too, sister.
- 1:00:33It was also with the therapist.
- 1:00:34And he says, she's asking me about something.
- 1:00:37However, he was dealing with something in the night and he goes, oh, yes, OK, I know.
- 1:00:42I guess I was pretty horny, pretty, pretty keyed up from being with the girl the night
- 1:00:46before.
- 1:00:47I was drunk too.
- 1:00:48That was it.
- 1:00:49I had a little to drink.
- 1:00:51I was a little drunk.
- 1:00:52Plus, I was horny.
- 1:00:53And point of order, she's an analyst.
- 1:00:54A of all.
- 1:00:55B of all, she's a cougar, right?
- 1:00:56She was looking up at the high.
- 1:00:57That's right.
- 1:00:58We saw him.
- 1:00:59And C of all.
- 1:01:00She was also fucking thirsty as shit.
- 1:01:01He mentioned getting like turned on by the bat.
- 1:01:02He's like, let's circle back to that.
- 1:01:03And C of all, she's a cougar.
- 1:01:04She's a cougar.
- 1:01:05She's a cougar.
- 1:01:06She's a cougar.
- 1:01:07She's a cougar.
- 1:01:08She's a cougar.
- 1:01:09She's a cougar.
- 1:01:10She's a cougar.
- 1:01:11She's a cougar.
- 1:01:12She's a cougar.
- 1:01:18She's a cougar.
- 1:01:29introduced through their mutual analytics.
- 1:01:32Oh, that is problematic.
- 1:01:34Oh, but to be fair, she didn't.
- 1:01:36It was all in his head.
- 1:01:37I do love when he's gone full vampire,
- 1:01:42and he's running around the city asking people to stake him.
- 1:01:44And he's yelling he's a vampire,
- 1:01:47and people going into church on Sunday morning.
- 1:01:49And the bells are going off, and he goes,
- 1:01:53Christ! The torches of the dam!
- 1:01:55Wait, I got one more that we can do.
- 1:02:00It's when he's, like Peter alluded to earlier,
- 1:02:03he's in this perfect relationship with a maddening woman for 10 minutes,
- 1:02:06and he gets home, and he's like,
- 1:02:08Oh, he's just saying,
- 1:02:09Why did you become a vampire? Why can't you be normal?
- 1:02:12Does this mean we can't have kids?
- 1:02:16Okay, so my favorite quote, just a little context.
- 1:02:18Nick Cage is berating Alma for not having found this contract.
- 1:02:25He calls out to one of the other secretaries to see what Alma's up to.
- 1:02:31The secretary's like,
- 1:02:32Oh, she's just getting ready to go.
- 1:02:34And he's like, Oh, well, send her in.
- 1:02:36So he has her come in, and he's all like,
- 1:02:38Oh, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:02:39They talk for a second.
- 1:02:40It's like, Oh, why do you have your coat on?
- 1:02:42And she's like, Oh, I was about to leave.
- 1:02:44So Peter just says,
- 1:02:46Oh, there is no one else in this entire office that I could possibly ask to share such a horrible job.
- 1:02:52You're the lowest on the totem pole here, Alma.
- 1:02:55The lowest.
- 1:02:56Do you realize that every other secretary who's been here has been here longer than you,
- 1:03:02Alma.
- 1:03:03Everyone.
- 1:03:04And even if there was someone here who had been here just one day longer than you,
- 1:03:09I still wouldn't ask that person to partake in such a miserable job.
- 1:03:14as long as you were around. That's right Alva, it's a horrible horrible job
- 1:03:21sifting through old contract after old contract. I couldn't think of a more
- 1:03:26horrible job if I wanted to and you have to do it. You have to or I'll fire you. Do
- 1:03:33you understand? Do you? Good. Then there's no problem then. Is there? And it's like I
- 1:03:42fucking love that little monologue which is like I've had terrible bosses, I've
- 1:03:47had terrible jobs, and I've had people try to fucking strong-arm me in said job
- 1:03:52with shit like that. And it's like God and it's just insane the way he straight
- 1:03:59up says to her face I'm making your life miserable only because I can. Yeah.
- 1:04:05That was the hottest part of the film. It was really good. Those white eyes. I don't want to throw shade at
- 1:04:11publishers because I'm sure they do something. I'm sure Peter Lowe's the job
- 1:04:16that he has. I'm sure that person does something. So I almost feel like that role
- 1:04:20that he's playing is also vampiric. Oh absolutely. You publish somebody else's
- 1:04:25work, you take credit for it, you suck the lifeblood out of it. Like what the fuck
- 1:04:29does a publisher even do? No offense publishers. No for real though. What's
- 1:04:32ironic though because you read the the Ringer article as well is that one of
- 1:04:36the producers of this because this movie was so weirdly panned none of them could
- 1:04:40get work after it and she ended up starting her own publishing house. That's
- 1:04:44right. Yeah the X of the screen right here. Interesting. So this got negative
- 1:04:48feedback huh? Oh yeah this was this was not a movie that was well received. It
- 1:04:53actually like really fucked up the director's career, the producers that
- 1:04:56were involved. The only one who kind of came away unscathed was Nick Cage because
- 1:04:59his performance was so unusual. But then it really got like a cult following and
- 1:05:05that's when it really kind of got new life. But it didn't it didn't make any
- 1:05:09money, it didn't really impact anybody in a positive way in terms of reviews. It
- 1:05:14was sort of a dead movie. Yeah 88 wasn't the time for a myth like this. I feel
- 1:05:19like 88 was such a time of optimism in US America and that level of like real
- 1:05:26like deep self-inquiry was just like taboo you know it's like we are doing it.
- 1:05:31This is the shit like everything about this is awesome. On the spectrum, good Cage,
- 1:05:38bad movie, bad Cage, good movie, good Cage, good movie. I mean in my opinion good Cage,
- 1:05:44good movie. I mean it's fucking wacky performance. Yes. I mean it's absolutely insane. Can we talk for just a
- 1:05:54minute about the scene where he gets his teeth? When you say like you had a hard
- 1:05:57time feeling bad for him, this is the scene where I really felt bad for him. Yes that's exactly what I was gonna say. This is the part
- 1:06:02where like I felt my heart open to Peter Lowe because he walks into some kind of
- 1:06:08esoteric shop and he does not. Standard corner occult store. Yep. And he asks the shopkeeper for teeth, he sees some nice teeth that are kind of
- 1:06:21realistic and he cannot afford them. He no longer has the cash in his wallet.
- 1:06:25They're $20. But he can't afford these teeth and so he has to buy the cheapies. Which he keeps putting it in like in different directions because sometimes like the underbite, overbite change in every scene.
- 1:06:39Didn't notice that part. But you know the poor guy sits on a park bench and rips into this package. But then like my empathy disappears because he puts them in and kind of like counts real quick and then he crawls away from the bench.
- 1:06:53He's a cat. He's a sexy cat. But with those teeth in, he does tally one kill which I'm with you, I don't think that he becomes a vampire but that does problematize a little bit that he's able to bite someone with that.
- 1:07:11He doesn't with the teeth though because you see right after he kills her. Does he take them out? Well you don't see him take them out. But after you see him kill her, like he turns around and just pops them back in.
- 1:07:20He does have a kill with the teeth.
- 1:07:24Which also, are pigeons that easy to catch? Holy fuck!
- 1:07:27Okay, there's a story behind this. The pigeon he did grab was droved but he wasn't told that they'd drug a pigeon. They just told him to grab and catch a pigeon. But they drugged one to make it so he would catch one eventually.
- 1:07:37So he would believe it. Oh, that's brilliant.
- 1:07:40Y'all want to drug some pigeons?
- 1:07:43Let's talk a little bit about how he gets himself killed.
- 1:07:46Yes.
- 1:07:47What did y'all make of that scene?
- 1:07:49Well I was just, I was excited for a good old fashioned tire ironing.
- 1:07:52So yeah, Alva tells her brother what happened so her brother breaks into Peter's home and is going to tire iron him to death and Peter's there with that hunk of wood he kicked out from a pallet earlier.
- 1:08:06And as soon as the daylight's on he puts the piece of wood to his chest and the brother's like, alright, shove.
- 1:08:14Yeah, well he's been asking people to stake him for like the last like one or so scenes for him. It would have been sad if they didn't.
- 1:08:24And, you know, they went right for it. The pallet wood is oriented the wrong direction to go through his ribs.
- 1:08:31Yeah.
- 1:08:32But I still enjoyed it. I think it was the appropriate death for him.
- 1:08:36This is going back a little bit to, I guess it relates to what some of you were talking about earlier with the opening shots of New York City skyline and just really love the way that they use the city as a backdrop throughout the whole movie, and there's so many
- 1:08:51interesting moments, I guess, both outside in the city, on the streets, and also inside. I thought they just did a really good job of creating this environment that, like the music it creates this feeling of dread and doom which really counters the
- 1:09:08sense of absurdity and comedy that's also happening and it makes it very, I think the first time I watched it. Yeah, I got this feeling I was just totally confused what like what the hell is this second time around though, I really, whether or not it was intentional
- 1:09:22I thought that it had a great effect that juxtaposition just made me think about vampires as extensions of their environment, like all monsters are kind of representative of some larger background I guess and, you know, like zombies sort of belong in this post apocalyptic
- 1:09:40setting. Vampires are creatures of the night, and this embodied being that represents something in the beer of shadow and of the things that are in the shadows in a society and in culture so things like lust and violence and all this stuff that gets to be written off
- 1:10:07when it's performed by white guys. The original vampire story like Dracula is about aristocrats literally eating the poor, it was literature for a lower class to comment on and point out the problem in their society of the rich flight guy literally eating them.
- 1:10:29You know I think to that point about the things that live in the shadows. The fact that the subway really doesn't play a big part in this film, I think is really like, again, a very subtle move that you would think that if you're going to shoot a vampire movie and it's
- 1:10:44going to be set in New York City that vampires going to make some hay in the subway like that's where you go to do your thing you know what I mean you're in the dark and the shadows you can sneak up on people you can get away quickly, but the only time we see the subway
- 1:10:56make an appearance is when Alva gives an arm to the homeless man who's singing Beautiful Dreamer. And so there is kind of this commentary about the goodness of the poor and the working class who actually are forced to live in the shadows in the society while
- 1:11:12meanwhile I think that that is actually happening while Peter Lowe is going apeshit on his apartment. All of these levels are happening at once which is why the film is so interesting to me but you know you can read into it all these different social
- 1:11:27commentaries cultural commentaries and at the same time the screenwriter who wrote this thing. He was in a terrible relationship with one of the producers actually who encouraged him to write the script as a way to like get him out of the house I think, but he, yeah he was
- 1:11:43in such shape and that's real you know and no matter who you are and no matter your, your power and privilege in society of course people still feel pain and suffering and so that's a part of it to is like this story of feeling, you know like you're in a shitty
- 1:11:58relationship and you're feeling isolated and you're longing for things that you don't have and yeah it's all it's all happening at once. So it's a confusing mess, but it's also kind of awesome.
- 1:12:10I'm going to pitch it to you guys first, your vote actually doesn't count. But what between these two movies would you pick to continue on?
- 1:12:18This is why I asked you the question earlier about best and cagiest are the same thing I would say between worlds is so cagy, but the vampire's kiss to me just as a work of art as a film, absolutely the best of the two.
- 1:12:31The vampire's kiss or the win. I think even the most absurd parts of between worlds can't compare to the bulging eyes and alphabet reciting antics of Nicolas Cage in this movie.
- 1:12:45Well that's unfortunate Nick and I discussed this earlier.
- 1:12:49We specifically decided because we know how much Peter hated it that we were going to hear the fucking monster.
- 1:12:54Look at that. You are the vampire.
- 1:13:01It's clearly vampire's kiss. Yeah, vampire's kiss was incredible. It's such a good movie and like I said I had a hard time getting into it but once I realized what I was actually seeing and went back and rewatched it completely sold an amazing film.
- 1:13:14I just want to take a step back here and say I cannot fucking wait for Renfield watching him continue this role playing straight up fucking Dracula is going to be incredible.
- 1:13:27This movie looks so good.
- 1:13:29So this is Cage adjacent. The sequel to Left Behind, Rise of the Antichrist is coming out starring Kevin Sorbo and in a recent interview Kevin Sorbo was, I'm not going to do the quote right so please forgive me because I didn't want Google to
- 1:13:43have me think I was Googling Kevin Sorbo Christian quotes, but he said something along the lines of, you know, the first one came out, and it did really well, but all my fan, but everyone was just like, why isn't Kevin Sorbo the lead in this film why is it Nick Cage, everyone wanted me to do it.
- 1:13:58So I, Kevin Sorbo, who will undoubtedly one day be found in a truck stop bathroom sucking Dean Cain's dick, allegedly, should have been in this film the whole time.
- 1:14:07Direct quote. I don't think there's anything missed.
- 1:14:14Yeah, that was my in this week and Kevin Sorbo thinks is a better actor than Nick Cage.
- 1:14:20So yeah, thank you guys for being here. It was a you elevated this podcast a little bit more than we're probably used to. And that's appreciated.
- 1:14:27If we can we'll link this podcast to an online thesaurus just for our listeners.
- 1:14:34Yeah, now that we're an educated podcast people exactly. I just want to give a quick shout out to the the ringer article, I got a lot of my information from the article called truly batshit the secret history of vampires kiss the craziest Nicholas Cage movie of all time
- 1:14:51by Zach Schoenfeld highly recommend it for a read it was really well done, really, really fascinating.
- 1:14:58So a couple shout outs, we got into the criteria on channel during the lockdown, and that's how we found vampires kiss and that's how most of the films that populate our imaginations, we find them on there.
- 1:15:11Really fantastically curated so big ups to the people who sort and organize the way they organize the films is just so nice. And then also wanted to shout out bell hooks, the will to change.

- 1:17:10I thought I was supposed to wait for a poignant moment like after I say pounding on the beat.
- 1:17:15I thought you were cleansing the space.
- 1:17:18That was the point. No, I'm just dumb.
