- 0:00Speaker 1: She's on the Money. She's on the Money.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money, the podcast
- 0:12Speaker 2: Millennials Who Want Financial Freedom.
- 0:14Speaker 3: My name is Georgia King.
- 0:15Speaker 2: I'm a copywriter and journalism student, and I'm joined as
- 0:18Speaker 2: always by the Queen of Cash, millennial money expert Victoria
- 0:22Speaker 2: to Buying.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Hello, be Hello, not be hold on? Hello, Hello George?
- 0:27Speaker 1: Am I hold I hold on? Hold on, Hello Georgia.
- 0:32Speaker 1: How are you? Yeah, I'm really good. How are you?
- 0:35Speaker 1: I'm pretty all right, Let's move on.
- 0:36Speaker 3: I'm happy to hear that, all right.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Now, today's show is all about online shopping and specifically
- 0:42Speaker 2: how you can make megasale days like Black Friday and
- 0:45Speaker 2: Cyber Monday at work for you, instead of getting sucked
- 0:47Speaker 2: into buying things like three pairs of shoes you don't
- 0:50Speaker 2: like or want because they were a hot deal and
- 0:52Speaker 2: a bargain's a.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Barg I feel attacked, but okay, carry on.
- 0:55Speaker 2: If you are a sucker for an online shop like
- 0:58Speaker 2: Victoria is, and go week at the side of a sale,
- 1:00Speaker 2: than this is the episode to you. Of course, we
- 1:03Speaker 2: will also be bringing you a money diarist who is
- 1:06Speaker 2: finally crushing her debt, and we'll be helping answer a
- 1:09Speaker 2: Christmas ey question about gift buying without breaking the bank.
- 1:12Speaker 2: A lot to get to today, Victoria, and before we
- 1:15Speaker 2: jump into money wins and confessions, more exciting things have
- 1:18Speaker 2: been happening. What happens over the weekend?
- 1:20Speaker 1: Ah, this just a little something something Georgia King. We
- 1:23Speaker 1: were oh, I don't even know how to announce this.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Over the weekend we found out that we were top
- 1:29Speaker 1: five finalists in two podcast categories for the Australian Podcasting Awards,
- 1:34Speaker 1: which is insane and so crazy because we've only existed
- 1:38Speaker 1: for what is it like a year and a half now,
- 1:40Speaker 1: and to think that we are getting nominated for actual
- 1:42Speaker 1: podcasting awards feels like we're really legit and grown up,
- 1:45Speaker 1: like a wee big kids now. I don't know, I'm
- 1:47Speaker 1: just so excited. So we've made it as finalists in Georgia.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Get this kind of a joke, but okay, the smartest
- 1:53Speaker 1: podcast I know. I loved that, and the best Business Podcast,
- 1:58Speaker 1: which is actually legit and very very exciting. So honestly, guys,
- 2:03Speaker 1: we could not have gotten anywhere without our listeners and
- 2:06Speaker 1: our community. So this was you. This wasn't us, Like, yeah,
- 2:09Speaker 1: we make a podcast, but like if it was falling
- 2:12Speaker 1: on deafears, we definitely would have never made it to
- 2:15Speaker 1: being finalists in any type of podcasting award. So honestly
- 2:18Speaker 1: forever grateful for you guys. But in saying that now
- 2:22Speaker 1: I've kind of butted you all up to be my
- 2:23Speaker 1: best friends, we want to let you know that there
- 2:26Speaker 1: is actually a Listener's Choice award where you actually get
- 2:30Speaker 1: to vote for us. So we'll be putting a link
- 2:33Speaker 1: in our show notes for you, and we would so
- 2:35Speaker 1: love your support. If you can go and chuck us
- 2:37Speaker 1: a vote, that would be absolutely fantastic because arguably, as
- 2:41Speaker 1: much as it's so nice to be finalists in these
- 2:43Speaker 1: two other podcast categories, what actually matters to us is
- 2:47Speaker 1: our listeners and our community. And yeah, that's kind of
- 2:50Speaker 1: where we're at when it comes to these types of awards.
- 2:53Speaker 2: One love that, please vote. That actually just made me think,
- 2:57Speaker 2: fee you know that phrase when a tree falls in
- 3:01Speaker 2: a forest and no one is there to hear it,
- 3:03Speaker 2: did it make a sound? That's kind of like what
- 3:06Speaker 2: podcasts are. If you make a podcast and no one
- 3:09Speaker 2: hears it? Did you really make a podcast like you
- 3:11Speaker 2: kind of did? But does it count? Do you know
- 3:13Speaker 2: what I mean anyway, I.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Don't know what you mean, But do you know what
- 3:16Speaker 1: I would like? I'd like the money wins and commersions
- 3:18Speaker 1: from you, Dalai Lama?
- 3:21Speaker 3: You go first, what's your wakay.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Dalai Lama. So this week I have like a money
- 3:27Speaker 1: win and a confession. I'm not sure if it's a
- 3:29Speaker 1: win or a confession, but you're totally going to know
- 3:31Speaker 1: what I'm talking about once I admit to this. So
- 3:33Speaker 1: this week my money win slash confession is that I
- 3:37Speaker 1: ordered a Dison vacuum online. I did order it through
- 3:41Speaker 1: the sponsors of today's show, actually because I got a
- 3:44Speaker 1: little bit educated on their platform and liked the idea
- 3:47Speaker 1: of it. So I used my EVA plus membership to
- 3:50Speaker 1: order a dice in vacuum, which Georgia, I've been talking
- 3:53Speaker 1: about for a really long time. I ordered it from
- 3:56Speaker 1: the Bingley store on eBay, and I'm honestly so proud
- 3:59Speaker 1: of my self for holding out on these purchase for
- 4:02Speaker 1: so long.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Oh was at the end of your story?
- 4:06Speaker 1: Are you joking? Pull your head in.
- 4:07Speaker 3: So it is great, It's great.
- 4:08Speaker 2: You have been talking about this vacuum since.
- 4:11Speaker 3: It feels like the start of the year.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Honestly a long year. Honestly, I do have an old
- 4:15Speaker 1: Dicon and it lasts approximately ten minutes before it needs
- 4:19Speaker 1: another charge, and then it takes approximately eight hours to
- 4:22Speaker 1: charge because the battery is dead. I've tried a heap
- 4:25Speaker 1: of times to order a new battery online, but I
- 4:27Speaker 1: can never find one in stock, and so I've kind
- 4:30Speaker 1: of just given up. And now a new vacuum is
- 4:32Speaker 1: what I felt like I needed, and I've you know,
- 4:35Speaker 1: I don't know, I'm that girl who watches YouTube videos
- 4:38Speaker 1: of vacuums. That's just where I am in my life. Friends.
- 4:41Speaker 1: I'm not sure if you know I'm just a bit
- 4:44Speaker 1: diluted today while we're recording or not. But yeah, I'm
- 4:47Speaker 1: admitting to that on a public forum. No, I love
- 4:49Speaker 1: that love that You're welcome, and I mean, I'm gonna
- 4:52Speaker 1: test them all out. I've been posting on Instagram about
- 4:55Speaker 1: it already. I haven't even got it yet. I'm just
- 4:57Speaker 1: truly excited. So if anybody wants to tune into Victoria
- 5:00Speaker 1: review of the vacuum, please ex give me a follow.
- 5:03Speaker 1: You're welcome.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Yeah, do a little YouTube video of that may I'll
- 5:05Speaker 2: be watching. Are you interested in my money?
- 5:08Speaker 1: Win not really a good share it with the community anyway.
- 5:11Speaker 2: We do it every week anyway. So Melbourne has opened up, guys.
- 5:15Speaker 2: You can feel the energy has changed shifted. We are
- 5:18Speaker 2: free kind of and it's pretty good.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Anyway.
- 5:21Speaker 2: I went to the shops on the weekend they were open,
- 5:24Speaker 2: went into stores, did some browsing.
- 5:25Speaker 1: How weird is it? It's so weird.
- 5:28Speaker 2: It is so novel and I don't know if you
- 5:30Speaker 2: feel the same beat, but I just have this urge
- 5:32Speaker 2: to spend because it's been so long since I've done
- 5:34Speaker 2: that in Stare.
- 5:35Speaker 1: I'm not gonna lie. I've got that as well, even
- 5:38Speaker 1: though I've been online shopping recently. I just feel like
- 5:42Speaker 1: it's novel. But it's also really is it bad to
- 5:45Speaker 1: say it's making me slightly anxious like going out in public.
- 5:48Speaker 1: I literally seem to have a level of social anxiety,
- 5:51Speaker 1: which is fine and I'm sure that I'll work all
- 5:54Speaker 1: of that out, but I'm also getting exhausted really easy.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Is that a thing like I went to the shops
- 5:59Speaker 1: and then I need a nap?
- 6:00Speaker 2: No, that is the thing. Oh, it's a thing for
- 6:02Speaker 2: me for sure. So I'd be interested to hear how
- 6:04Speaker 2: the Melbourny and sotomers are going with that as well.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Maybe we'll start a thrill like do y'all need a nap, Let's.
- 6:11Speaker 3: Let's sleep together. Ma, that's weird.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Wow, Anyway, I liked your money win a confession though,
- 6:16Speaker 1: like you didn't buy anything at all.
- 6:18Speaker 3: I didn't buy anything.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I resisted the urge because I would have just
- 6:21Speaker 2: done it for the sake of it. And yeah, so
- 6:23Speaker 2: you know that's my Wira.
- 6:24Speaker 1: She's on the money. Post to girl Georgia King, thank you.
- 6:27Speaker 2: I try to be Facebook group.
- 6:29Speaker 3: Let's chat about it.
- 6:30Speaker 2: One hundred thousand people in their Victorias are fine.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Oh my habish. I even took a photo of one
- 6:36Speaker 1: hundred thousand with those balloons and I felt like a
- 6:39Speaker 1: real influencer.
- 6:40Speaker 4: Georgia.
- 6:41Speaker 1: It was so fun. But I cannot believe that there
- 6:43Speaker 1: are one hundred thousand of you. This is actually wild.
- 6:47Speaker 1: I'm so proud of this community. Imagine how much money
- 6:50Speaker 1: with collectively saved, Like, can I make a little form
- 6:54Speaker 1: that we can all fill out and say, in the
- 6:55Speaker 1: last year since joining she's on the money, I've saved
- 6:58Speaker 1: like one hundred dollars or one thousand dollars and then
- 6:59Speaker 1: we can talk about how much she's on the money
- 7:02Speaker 1: community has saved the.
- 7:03Speaker 2: CAP's a color, dude, that would be cool.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Kind of weird, but I'm here for it. I'm always
- 7:07Speaker 1: here for weird stats. But speaking of the community, I
- 7:11Speaker 1: actually have a money win, like from the community. I
- 7:14Speaker 1: don't know if it's a money win or just a
- 7:15Speaker 1: life win. Our friend Hannah has posted and she said
- 7:19Speaker 1: side hustle alert. I started making polymer clay earrings a
- 7:23Speaker 1: month ago for fun, but I ended up falling in
- 7:25Speaker 1: love and soon I had these earrings with nowhere to
- 7:28Speaker 1: put them, so she started selling them online. It's been
- 7:31Speaker 1: three weeks since opening her shop and she's shocked but
- 7:34Speaker 1: incredibly proud to say that she's turned over seven hundred
- 7:37Speaker 1: and twenty two dollars. After many failed businesses over the
- 7:41Speaker 1: years that she's had, she is so grateful that this
- 7:44Speaker 1: one is working out for her. Can you believe it?
- 7:46Speaker 1: They are so cute and I'm so excited that. Yeah,
- 7:49Speaker 1: the people within our in our community are just like
- 7:51Speaker 1: making these small businesses, and I think that that's something
- 7:55Speaker 1: that I want to do this year for Christmas as well. Georgia,
- 7:57Speaker 1: let's do a thread in the Facebook group for like
- 8:00Speaker 1: shout out to She's on the money small businesses so
- 8:03Speaker 1: that we can buy from each other for Christmas. Like,
- 8:05Speaker 1: how cute would that be.
- 8:06Speaker 2: That's a great idea because there are so many clever
- 8:09Speaker 2: people in that group, and I mean with the newsletter,
- 8:11Speaker 2: a lot of people send through their small businesses because
- 8:14Speaker 2: we do do a shout out in there as well,
- 8:16Speaker 2: and it's amazing seeing what everyone is up to. So
- 8:18Speaker 2: that is a good idea.
- 8:19Speaker 1: My friend, Oh my gosh, I love it. One, I'm
- 8:21Speaker 1: going to order some gingerbread earrings from Hannah because they're
- 8:24Speaker 1: really cute. But two, if you don't actually subscribe to
- 8:27Speaker 1: our newsletter, there is some juicy, juicy information in there
- 8:31Speaker 1: each week from Georgia King, and every single week we
- 8:34Speaker 1: feature a small business because we know that you guys
- 8:37Speaker 1: don't have the platform often that you deserve, so we
- 8:40Speaker 1: hope to share ours with you. So if you have
- 8:42Speaker 1: a small business, go and pop your small business in
- 8:45Speaker 1: an email and shoot it through to Georgia and you
- 8:47Speaker 1: might be featured in the newsletter, which I think is
- 8:49Speaker 1: super fun. Love it, Love it, Georgia King. That wasn't
- 8:53Speaker 1: the only money win from our community that we liked, though,
- 8:56Speaker 1: you pick one every week, So what did you pick
- 8:58Speaker 1: this week to shout.
- 8:59Speaker 3: Out on the Okay?
- 9:00Speaker 2: So mine is from the lovely Kira, who has a
- 9:03Speaker 2: small money when she says, if you need a new wardrobe,
- 9:06Speaker 2: how about swapping your clothes with friends?
- 9:08Speaker 1: Genius.
- 9:09Speaker 2: My friends and I have all different sizes, go through
- 9:11Speaker 2: our wardrobes once in a blue moon, pick out what
- 9:13Speaker 2: we don't want, and then swap them between each other.
- 9:15Speaker 2: Half of the items she received had never been worn,
- 9:19Speaker 2: and she gave a big thanks to Hillary for the
- 9:20Speaker 2: skirt and Olivia for the top, which is pictured below.
- 9:25Speaker 2: And it's just a gorgeous idea. I think it's such
- 9:27Speaker 2: a good idea to get your girls, your guy friends
- 9:30Speaker 2: around have a little swap. We're allowed to do that
- 9:33Speaker 2: now in Victoria, So yeah, I just love that idea.
- 9:36Speaker 1: I actually really like that idea because my friends are
- 9:38Speaker 1: much more fashionable than I am often, so I just
- 9:42Speaker 1: feel like stealing their wardrobe is a fantastic idea own
- 9:44Speaker 1: money when that is coming my way hopefully soon, if
- 9:46Speaker 1: I could convince them love that.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Should we get to the main chat of today's show.
- 9:50Speaker 1: Be yes, because I'm actually really excited about these episode,
- 9:53Speaker 1: So let's jump straight.
- 9:54Speaker 2: All right, So today's show, guys, is all about how
- 9:56Speaker 2: to make those big events sales work for you. Now.
- 10:00Speaker 2: I think we've probably all been guilty of it. We're
- 10:02Speaker 2: coasting on in life cruis and checking our emails, scrolling
- 10:05Speaker 2: the gram, and then we see it a sale is
- 10:07Speaker 2: on and we immediately click through to the website to
- 10:09Speaker 2: trowl for bargains, even though before we saw that shiny
- 10:12Speaker 2: ad we didn't actually want or need the thing that
- 10:15Speaker 2: we were now coverting. Now it will come as a
- 10:17Speaker 2: surprise to you, absolutely no one that online shopping in
- 10:20Speaker 2: Australia is a very big deal. In twenty nineteen, Australians
- 10:24Speaker 2: spend twenty eight point six billion on online shopping, and
- 10:28Speaker 2: contributing to that sum is, of course, those megasale days
- 10:31Speaker 2: like fog Flashion Nights, Cyber Monday and Black Friday, which
- 10:34Speaker 2: is relatively new in Australia as it's very American and
- 10:37Speaker 2: of course revolves around Thanksgiving and it also marks the
- 10:41Speaker 2: first official day of the Christmas shopping season. But it
- 10:44Speaker 2: was actually eBay's biggest shopping day for the year in
- 10:47Speaker 2: twenty nineteen, which really shows that this is officially a
- 10:50Speaker 2: thing in Australia. Now, there is of course a merit
- 10:53Speaker 2: to these sales. If you use them to your favor,
- 10:56Speaker 2: you can save yourself some serious coin. And that's what
- 10:58Speaker 2: we want to chat about today. Can make the most
- 11:01Speaker 2: of these sales while simultaneously refusing the pull of the
- 11:04Speaker 2: clever marketing that sees us draining our bank accounts for
- 11:06Speaker 2: stuff we just don't need. Victoria, I find this topic
- 11:10Speaker 2: so interesting and it's obviously a very fine balancing act
- 11:13Speaker 2: to make these sales work for you and not tip
- 11:15Speaker 2: over into the territory of just being a marketer's dream.
- 11:19Speaker 2: So to start us off, let's talk about what we
- 11:21Speaker 2: mean by making sales work for you and how we
- 11:23Speaker 2: can actually do that.
- 11:24Speaker 3: Kick us off.
- 11:25Speaker 1: So, what you're referring to their g in terms of
- 11:27Speaker 1: making the sales work for you is refusing to get
- 11:29Speaker 1: sucked into the sales and buying things just because they
- 11:32Speaker 1: are cheap, and instead planning ahead for these sales to
- 11:35Speaker 1: happen so that you can jump on purchases that you
- 11:38Speaker 1: already intended on making and scoring them when you do
- 11:41Speaker 1: actually have a reduced price point. It's all about planning,
- 11:44Speaker 1: and I think it is so important to talk about
- 11:46Speaker 1: this topic, especially because Christmas is literally around the corner.
- 11:50Speaker 1: It's also very likely that you have in mind a
- 11:52Speaker 1: few of the gifts that you're going to be giving
- 11:54Speaker 1: this year, and buying those items on sale can be
- 11:56Speaker 1: a really good idea to bring down the overall cost
- 11:59Speaker 1: of what is you usually an incredibly expensive time of year.
- 12:02Speaker 1: So what I want to do this year is actually
- 12:05Speaker 1: challenge our community a little bit. This is just from me,
- 12:08Speaker 1: but let's start planning our Christmas so that none of
- 12:12Speaker 1: us in our community are doing last minute Christmas Eve shopping.
- 12:15Speaker 1: I think it's a stressful thing. I've done it a
- 12:17Speaker 1: million times. I mean probably like twenty nine times, like
- 12:21Speaker 1: not even twenty nine times, however long I've been buying
- 12:23Speaker 1: presents that my mum didn't fund. But it's one of
- 12:27Speaker 1: those things that we all do. We leave stuff for
- 12:29Speaker 1: the last minute. What I want you guys to do
- 12:31Speaker 1: is actually just write down a plan, organize what you
- 12:34Speaker 1: want to purchase, and put a plan in place to
- 12:36Speaker 1: get those things earlier than you think is necessary. Like
- 12:39Speaker 1: if Black Friday is around the corner, it's at the
- 12:41Speaker 1: end of November. Just FYI, friends, I think that we
- 12:44Speaker 1: should be using this to our advantage and planning to
- 12:47Speaker 1: actually purchase all our gifts a month early if we
- 12:49Speaker 1: are in a position to do so, reducing the stress
- 12:52Speaker 1: and the outlay of Christmas as a whole when it
- 12:55Speaker 1: comes to actually Christmas Day. So I think that that
- 12:58Speaker 1: is a challenge that I'm going to get a George King,
- 13:00Speaker 1: are you going to join me?
- 13:01Speaker 2: I think I will this year. I'm ready, I'm ready
- 13:04Speaker 2: for the challenge.
- 13:05Speaker 1: I'm very glad. I'm very very glad. Challenge accepted, my friend.
- 13:09Speaker 2: So, when it comes to making these sales work for us,
- 13:13Speaker 2: how do we actually make it happen?
- 13:15Speaker 1: So again, obviously take my challenge on board, but plan ahead. Now.
- 13:20Speaker 1: This episode is honestly, I'm obviously quite biased, but it
- 13:22Speaker 1: is the perfect launch pad for making the most of
- 13:25Speaker 1: these sales and actually planning ahead. Like, now is the time.
- 13:28Speaker 1: If you were waiting for a sign, this is your sign,
- 13:30Speaker 1: my friend. I want you guys to have a think
- 13:32Speaker 1: about Christmas and the gifts that you are planning on
- 13:34Speaker 1: purchasing and write them down in anticipation for these sales. Also,
- 13:38Speaker 1: note what you're currently in the market for, Like you're moving,
- 13:41Speaker 1: how soon do you need a new vacuum because yours
- 13:43Speaker 1: only last ten minutes. Do you need a new couch, George,
- 13:45Speaker 1: or are you moving how soon, Georgia. Maybe your runners
- 13:48Speaker 1: have seen better days and you actually need a new pair.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Write this stuff down ahead of time so you won't
- 13:53Speaker 1: be as blustered when the sales do come around and
- 13:55Speaker 1: then you end up forgetting what you needed and instead
- 13:58Speaker 1: you buy things that you weren't gonna buy in the place,
- 14:00Speaker 1: because you're in a panic to not miss out. I
- 14:02Speaker 1: just think it's so important to keep a wish list
- 14:05Speaker 1: and create a plan that you can refer back to
- 14:08Speaker 1: when it comes to these things, because we all want
- 14:10Speaker 1: that hit of dopamine regardless. Let's be honest. If we
- 14:13Speaker 1: are shoppers, we know what that feels like, and if
- 14:17Speaker 1: we plan for it, then at least we aren't you
- 14:19Speaker 1: wasting it in a way. Another thing is to tune out, Georgia.
- 14:23Speaker 1: When it comes to sales season and you've either bought
- 14:25Speaker 1: what you already intended or if you're refraining from purchasing
- 14:29Speaker 1: anything completely, I need you, guys to start making a
- 14:32Speaker 1: really conscious effort to tune out the marketing that is
- 14:35Speaker 1: going to be I promise it's going to be hammered
- 14:37Speaker 1: your way from every store that you've looked at online
- 14:40Speaker 1: targeted ads are incredibly clever and also super super annoying.
- 14:45Speaker 1: But if you're conscious of these ads that are following
- 14:48Speaker 1: you around the internet, it does make it a little
- 14:50Speaker 1: bit easier from refraining to click on them mindlessly and
- 14:53Speaker 1: then buying that product where you can just spend time
- 14:56Speaker 1: online doing what you intended to do instead of getting distracted,
- 15:00Speaker 1: which is exactly what these ads are designed to do
- 15:03Speaker 1: to you.
- 15:03Speaker 2: Georgia question, do you believe that Facebook ads are listening
- 15:08Speaker 2: to you? Because one time I walked past a trampoline
- 15:11Speaker 2: and I was like, look, it's a trampoline to my
- 15:13Speaker 2: boyfriend and he was like cool. Chat Anyway, later on
- 15:16Speaker 2: that night, what was sent my way trampoline ads? I
- 15:20Speaker 2: didn't buy one. They didn't get me.
- 15:22Speaker 1: I feel like our phones are listening, because like, I
- 15:26Speaker 1: don't know if Facebook's listening, but our phones are definitely listening.
- 15:29Speaker 1: I don't know if that a conspiracy. If we got
- 15:31Speaker 1: she's maybe conspiracy going on. If you guys know anything
- 15:34Speaker 1: about this, please share it with me, because the amount
- 15:37Speaker 1: of times that I've been like, oh, I really need
- 15:39Speaker 1: to purchase a new nail polish and then next minute
- 15:41Speaker 1: now polish is being served to me. I'm also finding
- 15:44Speaker 1: the same on TikTok, but it's getting creepy right, So
- 15:47Speaker 1: like off topic, guys, I had a saw knee last
- 15:50Speaker 1: week because I've decided to start running again. Terrible idea anyway,
- 15:54Speaker 1: how to really saw knee? And then I'm scrolling through TikTok.
- 15:57Speaker 1: The third TikTok was literally like, oh, I have you
- 15:59Speaker 1: got to saw? He has had to strap it up properly,
- 16:01Speaker 1: and I was like, oh, I hadn't even spoken about this.
- 16:04Speaker 1: Are you in my brain?
- 16:06Speaker 2: Those ads are just bizarre, so just be mindful. Be
- 16:09Speaker 2: mindful that they are targeting you for a reason, so
- 16:11Speaker 2: they are bizarre.
- 16:12Speaker 1: But also if you don't want to be as targeted online,
- 16:15Speaker 1: I'm not sure how much this helps. These days, you
- 16:17Speaker 1: can also go incognito and do like private browsing while
- 16:20Speaker 1: doing your shopping so you're not automatically targeted later, which
- 16:23Speaker 1: could be an idea. Another thing, when we are talking
- 16:26Speaker 1: about online unsubscribed from things that end up in your
- 16:30Speaker 1: mailbox Georgia, Honestly, it is one of those things that
- 16:34Speaker 1: often gets me clicking and distracted during work, and you
- 16:38Speaker 1: know during the day when I'm going through my emails
- 16:40Speaker 1: and a really nice promo comes up, I just think,
- 16:43Speaker 1: if you're not in the market for something, you don't
- 16:45Speaker 1: need the marketing emails, and if you do find yourself
- 16:48Speaker 1: in the market for something, you can actually go find
- 16:50Speaker 1: a promotion relatively easy. It's twenty twenty. So I think
- 16:53Speaker 1: if you're in the market for a new pair of
- 16:55Speaker 1: shoes and you're actively looking for it and you want
- 16:57Speaker 1: a twenty percent discount code, I'm sure you'll be able
- 17:00Speaker 1: to find one. You don't need to always be in
- 17:02Speaker 1: the loop on someone's DM to do that. Often the
- 17:05Speaker 1: edms force you into buying things you didn't need. Another point,
- 17:08Speaker 1: which I've made on this podcast before, but he's really
- 17:11Speaker 1: relevant to remind you of Georgia is use your saved
- 17:14Speaker 1: money wisely. So I love the idea of deliberately putting
- 17:17Speaker 1: the money that you've saved from any purchase you make
- 17:20Speaker 1: into a savings account that you don't touch, or into
- 17:23Speaker 1: your micro investing platform, or popping it towards your holiday fund,
- 17:26Speaker 1: instead of having that money saved there to essentially be
- 17:29Speaker 1: spent on something else. So put it to work for you.
- 17:32Speaker 1: And actually get bang for your buck. And this happens
- 17:35Speaker 1: like when people say, oh, like I've stopped having coffees
- 17:38Speaker 1: out and I'm having them home, Like, I still want
- 17:41Speaker 1: you to take that four dollars fifty and put it
- 17:42Speaker 1: into savings so it becomes genuine savings instead of just
- 17:46Speaker 1: sitting in your cash floor account where you spend it
- 17:48Speaker 1: on other things. So that would be my top tips
- 17:51Speaker 1: for today, Georgia. Love it.
- 17:52Speaker 2: And then when it comes to traps we can avoid.
- 17:55Speaker 2: Are there any tips you have there?
- 17:56Speaker 1: I think when it comes to stuff like sporadic shopping
- 17:59Speaker 1: and in pol buying, the key thing is that I
- 18:02Speaker 1: want our listeners to avoid these things. So you only
- 18:05Speaker 1: save money on sales when you're actually planning on purchasing
- 18:08Speaker 1: the product, and then you saved on that product. Impulse buying,
- 18:12Speaker 1: especially at a time when everything seems really shiny and
- 18:15Speaker 1: too good to be true. We're talking about this before, Georgia.
- 18:18Speaker 1: It can actually be quite disastrous on our bank accounts.
- 18:21Speaker 1: So I really want you guys to understand the difference
- 18:24Speaker 1: between saving on sales and actually being manipulated by sales,
- 18:27Speaker 1: which is a legitimate thing as well.
- 18:29Speaker 2: Before we move on to our listener question today. V.
- 18:32Speaker 2: I know you obviously have a bit of a background
- 18:35Speaker 2: in psychology, which is quite handy, and that also lends
- 18:38Speaker 2: itself to an understanding of consumer behavior. So what is
- 18:42Speaker 2: it about a sale that humans just find so hard
- 18:45Speaker 2: to resist?
- 18:45Speaker 1: Dopamine? Full stop, end of story. We just love a
- 18:49Speaker 1: good dopamine hit, and it's not uncommon. But also fomo
- 18:53Speaker 1: it's a massive part of online marketing and the psychology
- 18:57Speaker 1: of sales as a whole. There's just this idea out
- 18:59Speaker 1: there that sales temporary and we need to get in
- 19:02Speaker 1: now before the sale ends or before they run out
- 19:04Speaker 1: of that product. So beware of terms that are like
- 19:07Speaker 1: for a limited time only, or like selling fast, or
- 19:10Speaker 1: this won't last long, or this is the biggest sale
- 19:13Speaker 1: we've ever had, because these are just marketing tools that
- 19:16Speaker 1: make you feel more pressured to purchase something in the moment.
- 19:20Speaker 1: There's always going to be a better option, There's always
- 19:22Speaker 1: going to be another opportunity at some point. So I
- 19:25Speaker 1: think that if we have this mentality of like, oh
- 19:27Speaker 1: my gosh, it's never gonna happen again, we're actually taking
- 19:30Speaker 1: our sales two steps backwards. So I think you need
- 19:32Speaker 1: to see these for what they are, and that's just
- 19:35Speaker 1: as marketing tactics. I also think that sales morph you're
- 19:39Speaker 1: thinking into what we are saving instead of what we
- 19:41Speaker 1: are spending. Like how many times have we, you know,
- 19:43Speaker 1: bought something that we weren't meant to buy and been like, ah, Georgia,
- 19:47Speaker 1: but I saved X amount? It's like, well, were you
- 19:50Speaker 1: really planning on purchasing that? In reality, sales shoppers often
- 19:55Speaker 1: spend more than non sales shoppers, so keep that in mind,
- 19:58Speaker 1: because if you think you're getting a bus, often you
- 20:00Speaker 1: might be on ourverage spending more than someone who doesn't
- 20:04Speaker 1: buy anything on sale, and that's that's kind of depressing
- 20:06Speaker 1: if I'm being honest. But while we're speaking about research,
- 20:11Speaker 1: research also tells us that when it comes to the
- 20:13Speaker 1: price perception, the first digit is the one we paid
- 20:16Speaker 1: the most attention to, which you're probably not surprised about.
- 20:19Speaker 1: You've probably heard before. But we would much prefer to
- 20:22Speaker 1: pay forty nine ninety nine for something rather than a
- 20:25Speaker 1: full fifty dollars. Sounds simple, but these are marketing tricks
- 20:28Speaker 1: that honestly play with our minds, and it is just
- 20:31Speaker 1: so important to be aware of and remind yourself of
- 20:34Speaker 1: these things because George, how many times have we bought
- 20:36Speaker 1: something that is forty nine ninety five and then when
- 20:40Speaker 1: someone said, oh, how much was that, you say forty dollars?
- 20:43Speaker 1: Like it is so easy to round down, and we
- 20:45Speaker 1: really need to stop doing that and see prices for
- 20:48Speaker 1: exactly what they are. Fifty dollars, full stop, end of story.
- 20:51Speaker 1: Always round up.
- 20:53Speaker 2: It's so interesting because all of these points just really
- 20:56Speaker 2: sound like common sense things, but it's crazy how we
- 21:00Speaker 2: do get sucked into marketing so easily, Like these are experts.
- 21:04Speaker 2: Manipulating is a strong and I feel like quite a
- 21:06Speaker 2: loaded word, but at the end of the day, these
- 21:08Speaker 2: businesses their purpose is to make sales, so it makes
- 21:11Speaker 2: sense that their marketing is strong and where we are
- 21:14Speaker 2: manipulated by it, so.
- 21:15Speaker 1: It's it's a legit thing as well, Like we need
- 21:18Speaker 1: to remember that these companies spend money on advertising, they
- 21:21Speaker 1: spend money or marketing. They spend money having researchers work
- 21:25Speaker 1: out what a consumer's activities actually look like and how
- 21:29Speaker 1: that works and how to best get them to purchase
- 21:32Speaker 1: more Like it's a multi billion dollar business. We're not
- 21:36Speaker 1: saying completely avoid it. It can actually be quite helpful
- 21:39Speaker 1: in some circumstances. But what I want you guys to
- 21:41Speaker 1: be is aware of these things, like these things have
- 21:44Speaker 1: billions of dollars invested in them for good reason, because
- 21:47Speaker 1: it provides good returns to those companies. So I think
- 21:50Speaker 1: we need to remember that there's a reason there's still
- 21:53Speaker 1: money being poured into marketing each and every single year,
- 21:57Speaker 1: and that we are essentially just the consumers. So let's
- 21:59Speaker 1: just be super aware consumers together.
- 22:01Speaker 3: Yep, love it.
- 22:02Speaker 1: Be mindful.
- 22:03Speaker 2: The last little thing I wanted to note as well
- 22:05Speaker 2: with this topic is that obviously both me and I
- 22:08Speaker 2: are big advocates for sustainability where possible, and fast fashion
- 22:13Speaker 2: is obviously a huge issue when it comes to the
- 22:15Speaker 2: whole ethics and question of sustainability. So if you have
- 22:20Speaker 2: a problem with shopping, if you are a bit of
- 22:21Speaker 2: a shopaholic, and you want to understand a little bit
- 22:24Speaker 2: more about the impacts of fashion and consumerism, then do
- 22:28Speaker 2: go back and listen to our episode we did at
- 22:31Speaker 2: the start of season three it was eight years ago now,
- 22:33Speaker 2: which I think is literally called the Real Price of
- 22:36Speaker 2: Fast Fashion or something like that. It's very obvious in
- 22:38Speaker 2: the title, So do go back and have a listen
- 22:41Speaker 2: to that one, but for now, I think it's off
- 22:43Speaker 2: to the listener question.
- 22:45Speaker 4: Hey, guys, So I'm really worry this year that my
- 22:49Speaker 4: Christmas shopping is going to impact my financial goals. I
- 22:53Speaker 4: really want to buy nice things for my friends and family,
- 22:55Speaker 4: but it's going to be really hard to build those
- 22:58Speaker 4: savings up again. And I've worked really hard to get
- 23:00Speaker 4: to this point. So am I a bad person? Now?
- 23:04Speaker 4: I want to know how everyone is managing their cash
- 23:07Speaker 4: flow this season. Please help me?
- 23:10Speaker 2: Alrighty, Victoria, I feel like this is a question that's
- 23:12Speaker 2: probably rattling around in a lot of our listeners' heads.
- 23:16Speaker 2: What would be your answer to this one?
- 23:18Speaker 1: I feel like so many of us can relate to this,
- 23:20Speaker 1: especially at this time of the year. This is going
- 23:22Speaker 1: to be such a strange Christmas, if I'm being honest, like,
- 23:25Speaker 1: we will hopefully all be surrounded by friends and family
- 23:28Speaker 1: and have a really nice time, But it's undeniable that
- 23:31Speaker 1: so many of us have gone through essentially incredibly challenging
- 23:35Speaker 1: financial situations this year, and I think that our expectations
- 23:39Speaker 1: when it comes to Christmas spending should be reflective of that,
- 23:42Speaker 1: and you shouldn't just be like, oh, well, I spent
- 23:44Speaker 1: X amount last year, it's really reasonable to have to
- 23:47Speaker 1: do that again this year. Like I don't think that
- 23:49Speaker 1: should be reasonable any year. Like gift giving is really
- 23:52Speaker 1: nice to have, it is not essential, and I think
- 23:55Speaker 1: that's something we really need to remember. But given the episode,
- 23:58Speaker 1: I would recommend using sales like Black Friday sales on
- 24:02Speaker 1: Ebays and sticking to your goals through planning and actually
- 24:05Speaker 1: understanding your money values and then trying to reduce your
- 24:08Speaker 1: delivery costs everywhere and all of the additional fees like
- 24:11Speaker 1: making one big order Georgia instead of multiple through a
- 24:14Speaker 1: number of different weeks. So I think it's all about planning.
- 24:17Speaker 1: But the number one thing that I would do here
- 24:19Speaker 1: is actually sit down and work out what you can
- 24:22Speaker 1: logically afford and work backwards. Like when it comes to money,
- 24:25Speaker 1: I often like to work backwards best because it gives
- 24:28Speaker 1: us the clearest outcomes. So if you're planning on organizing
- 24:33Speaker 1: Christmas this year, and you just sit down and you go,
- 24:36Speaker 1: you know what, overall, I really only want to spend
- 24:39Speaker 1: five hundred dollars this Christmas, and I have five people
- 24:42Speaker 1: to buy for. Take five hundred dollars and divide it
- 24:45Speaker 1: by five, and you'll find that about one hundred dollars
- 24:48Speaker 1: a gift is something that would be relevant for you
- 24:51Speaker 1: if you still have that five hundred dollars that you
- 24:53Speaker 1: want to spend and you actually have nine people that
- 24:55Speaker 1: you need to buy for. Your new budget is fifty
- 24:58Speaker 1: five dollars per pose. So I think it's really important
- 25:01Speaker 1: to start talking about budgeting, and I'm sure we'll do
- 25:03Speaker 1: another episode on this before Christmas, Georgia, because I just
- 25:06Speaker 1: think it's so important to talk about budgeting and cash
- 25:09Speaker 1: flow and really understanding these things, but work backwards and
- 25:13Speaker 1: work out what you can afford and set an overall
- 25:15Speaker 1: budget and then break it down from there. So for me,
- 25:19Speaker 1: I would just make sure that you remember that Christmas
- 25:21Speaker 1: is about spending time with people. It's not about the
- 25:24Speaker 1: product that you purchase someone. Obviously, nice gifts are beautiful,
- 25:28Speaker 1: but I think we can all agree that ninety nine
- 25:30Speaker 1: point ninety five percent of us would prefer a thoughtful
- 25:33Speaker 1: gift over an expensive one. So I think sit down,
- 25:37Speaker 1: have a bit of a brainstorm about gifts that could
- 25:39Speaker 1: essentially mean something more than just something you've bought at
- 25:42Speaker 1: the store.
- 25:42Speaker 2: The only thing I would say is that she's definitely
- 25:44Speaker 2: not a bad person, which was a part of her question. Yeah,
- 25:47Speaker 2: absolutely not, Yeah, no way. But in terms of managing
- 25:51Speaker 2: her cash flow and how you can do that, what
- 25:54Speaker 2: would you say beyond setting a number that you can
- 25:57Speaker 2: afford and then breaking that up, is there anything else
- 25:59Speaker 2: you can do?
- 26:00Speaker 1: It's a bit late for this advice right now because
- 26:02Speaker 1: it is November, friends, but I would be managing cash
- 26:05Speaker 1: flow as a whole, not managing cash flow just for
- 26:08Speaker 1: the silly season. So if you manage your cash flow
- 26:11Speaker 1: as a whole, you will already be prepared for Christmas.
- 26:14Speaker 1: You'll have that in the budget, You'll have that set aside,
- 26:17Speaker 1: so it never feels financially constrictive. And I think that's
- 26:21Speaker 1: something that I would really recommend for everybody. Organize your budget,
- 26:24Speaker 1: organize your cash flow. Once you have those things in place,
- 26:27Speaker 1: they are like the foundations of your financial success. Honestly,
- 26:31Speaker 1: if you've got your budget together, you know what's coming
- 26:33Speaker 1: in and what's going out, and you have a cash
- 26:36Speaker 1: flow system in place, every single dollar that you make
- 26:39Speaker 1: ends up working for you, as opposed to you scrambling
- 26:41Speaker 1: when a bill comes in, and you feel like you
- 26:44Speaker 1: are consistently in this loop of living payday to payday.
- 26:47Speaker 1: So I think it's just about actually managing cashlow as
- 26:50Speaker 1: a whole. Obviously I'm biased because we do have our
- 26:53Speaker 1: cash flow course and we do talk about budgeting and
- 26:55Speaker 1: cashlow a lot on this podcast, but seriously, getting control
- 26:59Speaker 1: of that and you'll no longer feel as much financial stress.
- 27:03Speaker 1: But I think it also goes back Georgia to taking
- 27:06Speaker 1: stress off yourself, Like if you want to buy nice
- 27:08Speaker 1: things for the ones that you love, like that's so
- 27:11Speaker 1: so kind, but have I think about things that are
- 27:14Speaker 1: a little bit left field that might mean a little
- 27:16Speaker 1: bit more to them. Like I remember a couple of
- 27:18Speaker 1: Christmases ago, I got a gift voucher from my partner
- 27:22Speaker 1: that was like a homemade gift voucher for a thing
- 27:24Speaker 1: that I really wanted to do, and it was just
- 27:26Speaker 1: really sweet and really thoughtful, and honestly it didn't end
- 27:29Speaker 1: up costing him anything except lunch on the day. And
- 27:32Speaker 1: I just think that, you know, that ended up meaning
- 27:34Speaker 1: a lot more to me than you know, an item
- 27:37Speaker 1: that I would have forgotten by now, whereas I remember
- 27:39Speaker 1: that really fondly. So maybe experiences this year over actual gifts.
- 27:44Speaker 2: Love that homemade is the way to go as well.
- 27:46Speaker 3: I love that idea.
- 27:51Speaker 5: I am twenty four and previously journey but learning how
- 27:54Speaker 5: to float, and this is my money diary.
- 27:57Speaker 2: Now let's take a sneak peek into the financial life
- 28:00Speaker 2: the Perfect Strangers. It's time for money diaries.
- 28:03Speaker 5: Financially, twelve months ago I was drowning. Was in about
- 28:07Speaker 5: forty thousand dollars worth of debt. I had quick loans,
- 28:11Speaker 5: I had every type of buying hour pay later service
- 28:14Speaker 5: you can imagine, ones you probably haven't even heard of.
- 28:17Speaker 5: I was struggling to pay any of my bills. I
- 28:21Speaker 5: had to borrow money from one of my sisters to
- 28:23Speaker 5: keep afloat. I knew exactly how much I had to
- 28:25Speaker 5: get paid every single week to be able to pay
- 28:28Speaker 5: my bills, but I definitely struggled to reach out amount
- 28:31Speaker 5: because it was quite high, and that didn't take into
- 28:33Speaker 5: account any sort of discretionary spending or anything like that.
- 28:37Speaker 5: So now I am about half of that. I found
- 28:43Speaker 5: the podcast once my friend put me onto it. I
- 28:45Speaker 5: did withdraw a little bit of my super during COVID,
- 28:49Speaker 5: so that definitely went to pay off some of my
- 28:52Speaker 5: three credit cards, personal loan, quick loans, all of the above,
- 28:57Speaker 5: and I have savings for the first time in my life.
- 29:00Speaker 3: What does she do for work? How much does she
- 29:01Speaker 3: earn and how much does she have sitting in her
- 29:03Speaker 3: bank account.
- 29:04Speaker 5: I am a store manager at a BOOSTOS. I've only
- 29:08Speaker 5: just taken that role. That I should be earning around
- 29:11Speaker 5: sixty thousand a year, and I have roughly three thousand
- 29:15Speaker 5: in my bank account at the moment, which is incredible
- 29:18Speaker 5: because I've never had more than three hundred dollars in
- 29:21Speaker 5: my bank account.
- 29:22Speaker 3: And what happens to her money? Wants it arrives in
- 29:24Speaker 3: her account.
- 29:24Speaker 5: So as soon as I get paid, I pay my
- 29:29Speaker 5: one hundred and fifty dollars for my board. I then
- 29:31Speaker 5: have a direct debit come out to a savings account
- 29:34Speaker 5: that I can't see, so fifty dollars automatically disappears. I've
- 29:37Speaker 5: also got my direct debit for my race set up
- 29:39Speaker 5: from that account as well, so I leave that money
- 29:41Speaker 5: in there. I transfer everything else to my up, and
- 29:44Speaker 5: then I transfer across my savers accounts, and I usually
- 29:48Speaker 5: leave myself about one hundred, one hundred and fifty dollars
- 29:50Speaker 5: for the rest of the week.
- 29:51Speaker 3: What are her investment plans, what are her general attitudes
- 29:54Speaker 3: towards investing.
- 29:56Speaker 5: So for a while I had no knowledge about investing.
- 30:01Speaker 5: I didn't really think that it was something that just
- 30:03Speaker 5: anyone and everyone did until I started listening to the podcast.
- 30:07Speaker 5: So I decided to jump on rais as about five
- 30:11Speaker 5: hundred dollars in there at the moment, I just directed
- 30:14Speaker 5: it ten dollars a week, and then I've got round ups,
- 30:17Speaker 5: so it usually ended up being about twenty dollars a week.
- 30:20Speaker 5: Once I've cleared my debt, I really want to delve
- 30:24Speaker 5: deeper into the stock market and figuring out where I
- 30:27Speaker 5: want to go and where I want to invest, because
- 30:30Speaker 5: I think it is an awesome thing to get done
- 30:33Speaker 5: now to set myself up for later.
- 30:36Speaker 3: So actually have any debts.
- 30:37Speaker 5: So I have just only sixteen thousand dollars on a
- 30:41Speaker 5: personal loan, just over four and a half on a
- 30:45Speaker 5: credit card debt, but I've actually canceled the credit card,
- 30:48Speaker 5: so I can't use that account at all. I'm just
- 30:51Speaker 5: paying off the debt and the interest. But I find
- 30:53Speaker 5: that really works because you can't spend any more money.
- 30:57Speaker 5: And I had no idea that was even a thing
- 30:59Speaker 5: until someone who posts about it in the.
- 31:01Speaker 3: Group what is her best money habit.
- 31:03Speaker 5: Probably be that I always pay my bills. I always
- 31:07Speaker 5: make sure that I'm never getting late fees and all
- 31:11Speaker 5: that sort of stuff because I'm not paying my bills
- 31:13Speaker 5: on time. I've always made sure that I pay them,
- 31:16Speaker 5: especially my loans, because I don't want to mess up
- 31:19Speaker 5: anything for in the future. And I feel like I
- 31:22Speaker 5: split my money quite well, like I have maybe fifteen
- 31:24Speaker 5: different savers on my up account, because I find that
- 31:28Speaker 5: allocating money to a specific thing really helps when I
- 31:33Speaker 5: need to dip back into my savings because I can
- 31:35Speaker 5: see that I'm taking it away from something else. So
- 31:37Speaker 5: I don't tend to dip into those accounts anywhere there
- 31:40Speaker 5: as much as I previously have.
- 31:42Speaker 3: What is her worst money.
- 31:43Speaker 5: Habit probably has always been that I like to have
- 31:46Speaker 5: multiple of everything. If I find a jacket that I like,
- 31:50Speaker 5: I buy it in every single color it comes in.
- 31:53Speaker 5: I find a blanket, and all of a sudden, I
- 31:55Speaker 5: have six because it had six colors. I also spend
- 31:59Speaker 5: an incredible amount of money on makeup for someone that
- 32:02Speaker 5: doesn't wear makeup very often. But I just have this
- 32:04Speaker 5: mentality that I have to have the whole collection. So
- 32:07Speaker 5: as soon as another Pellette comes out, I have to
- 32:09Speaker 5: have it because I have all the other ones, but
- 32:11Speaker 5: I don't actually use them.
- 32:13Speaker 3: And what is her big money goal.
- 32:15Speaker 5: Well, I definitely want to get myself completely out of debt,
- 32:19Speaker 5: and I want to set myself up with an emergency
- 32:22Speaker 5: fund and a rainy day fund and all of the
- 32:25Speaker 5: above so that when I have a major car service
- 32:30Speaker 5: or something like that, I'm not freaking out because I
- 32:32Speaker 5: don't know how to pay it, Like I need that
- 32:35Speaker 5: stability there before I can do anything else. And then
- 32:39Speaker 5: I think my next step would be getting serious about investing.
- 32:44Speaker 2: What grade would our learning how to float money diarists
- 32:46Speaker 2: give her money habits.
- 32:48Speaker 5: I would probably give myself a C minus it previously
- 32:53Speaker 5: would have been like a D or even an F.
- 32:57Speaker 5: But yeah, I still have a long way to go,
- 33:00Speaker 5: but I've definitely come quite far. One of the main
- 33:03Speaker 5: things I wanted to even do this is because there
- 33:07Speaker 5: are people that have been in my situation that just
- 33:09Speaker 5: think that there's no way out, Like they just think
- 33:11Speaker 5: I'm too far in. There's no way I can do this,
- 33:15Speaker 5: There's no way I can save because I have that
- 33:17Speaker 5: exact same mentality until like my amazing friend put me
- 33:21Speaker 5: onto this podcast in the group. You can always go further.
- 33:24Speaker 5: You can always do it. You've just got to have
- 33:27Speaker 5: the people and the support behind you.
- 33:29Speaker 2: Alrighty V, what did you make of twenty four? Previously
- 33:32Speaker 2: drowning and now staying afloat? I think that was her name?
- 33:35Speaker 2: What did you think?
- 33:35Speaker 1: That was probably the longest name we've had, but I
- 33:37Speaker 1: challenge to other people to make longer and more confusing names.
- 33:40Speaker 1: But I really liked it. I just felt like this
- 33:43Speaker 1: was such an empowering story that a lot of people
- 33:46Speaker 1: in our community can probably relate to forty thousand dollars
- 33:49Speaker 1: worth of debt. I think her name sums it up.
- 33:51Speaker 1: She felt like she was drowning, and I know so
- 33:53Speaker 1: many people in this situation who that's exactly how they feel.
- 33:58Speaker 1: I'm also incredibly proud of her for doing this, because
- 34:01Speaker 1: it takes a lot to actually pull your head out
- 34:03Speaker 1: of the sand and say that you need to change.
- 34:05Speaker 1: And I know she mentioned and it was very sweet
- 34:07Speaker 1: of her to do so the podcast. But as much
- 34:10Speaker 1: as you and I can talk about these things, I
- 34:12Speaker 1: think you actually have to be open to the feedback
- 34:14Speaker 1: and you have to be open to taking these things
- 34:16Speaker 1: on because there are so many people out there that
- 34:19Speaker 1: you know, maybe have been recommended to get some help,
- 34:21Speaker 1: or you know someone suggested listening to a podcast and
- 34:24Speaker 1: they just say no, no, no, like at the end
- 34:26Speaker 1: of the day, like you are the reason for change.
- 34:29Speaker 1: It's also just such a nice story of someone actively
- 34:32Speaker 1: working towards changing their money story, and like, how cool
- 34:35Speaker 1: is that?
- 34:36Speaker 3: Extremely cool?
- 34:37Speaker 2: And I love that she credits UV and the listening
- 34:40Speaker 2: to this podcast to kind of get her started on
- 34:43Speaker 2: this new journey. And it is amazing, like to be
- 34:45Speaker 2: in forty grand worth of debt and to work yourself
- 34:49Speaker 2: out of that. I think she said half of it
- 34:51Speaker 2: is now gone, which is amazing.
- 34:53Speaker 1: Yeah, she said half of it was gone, and like
- 34:55Speaker 1: that feels just crazy.
- 34:56Speaker 2: Oh it does. But imagine I can imagine being in
- 34:59Speaker 2: that situation and just feeling like, well, there's no use
- 35:01Speaker 2: to me even trying. I don't want to listen to
- 35:02Speaker 2: a money podcast, like that makes me depressed. It's better,
- 35:05Speaker 2: like I'm better off just not acknowledging it and I'll
- 35:07Speaker 2: just sit here head in the sand, as you say.
- 35:10Speaker 2: But she's spoken against that, and I think it's really inspiring.
- 35:14Speaker 1: It's so inspiring and knowing that in twelve months, she's
- 35:17Speaker 1: gone from forty thousand dollars worth of debt to saying
- 35:21Speaker 1: that she was you know, I think she said she
- 35:22Speaker 1: was halfway out. And she has three thousand dollars in
- 35:25Speaker 1: savings when she's never had more than three hundred dollars. Like,
- 35:29Speaker 1: I'm so proud of her, Like I want to give
- 35:31Speaker 1: her a hug and congratulate her, and I want to
- 35:33Speaker 1: do that to everyone in our community all the time.
- 35:35Speaker 1: But I just feel like that's so inspiring as well
- 35:39Speaker 1: and so relatable for our community because it's not as
- 35:42Speaker 1: though she's making hundreds of thousands of dollars and obviously
- 35:45Speaker 1: it wouldn't be as challenging to get out of debt.
- 35:47Speaker 1: Like she's earning sixty grand a year and she's got
- 35:50Speaker 1: forty thousand dollars worth of debt, like that was going
- 35:52Speaker 1: to take a very long time to get out of.
- 35:55Speaker 1: But it sounds like she's making that a priority for her,
- 35:58Speaker 1: and like that's just really cool.
- 36:00Speaker 2: Yeah, And she's also really interested in investing, which I
- 36:03Speaker 2: know will make you happy. V.
- 36:04Speaker 1: Everybody being interested in investing always makes me super happy.
- 36:08Speaker 1: But not to be a debbie downer, I do want
- 36:11Speaker 1: to talk about the end of her money time.
- 36:13Speaker 2: This is what I was going to ask you about.
- 36:14Speaker 2: So she made sure she buys something that she loves
- 36:19Speaker 2: and then she buys ten of it in different colors
- 36:21Speaker 2: because she loves it. And she does the same thing
- 36:24Speaker 2: with makeup, so she has the whole collection even though
- 36:26Speaker 2: she doesn't really wear makeup. So what's going on there?
- 36:29Speaker 3: Ving your opinion?
- 36:30Speaker 1: So I obviously never have an opinion on someone else's
- 36:34Speaker 1: values because that is absolutely not my place, nor is
- 36:36Speaker 1: there anybody else's place to have an opinion on someone
- 36:39Speaker 1: else's values and choices that they make, because we've never
- 36:41Speaker 1: walked a mile in their shoes. But she literally said
- 36:44Speaker 1: that she doesn't use them and she doesn't really know why.
- 36:47Speaker 1: So I think that for me, if I was in
- 36:49Speaker 1: that situation, I would want to do a little bit
- 36:52Speaker 1: of self reflection and like write down what types of
- 36:55Speaker 1: feelings I get when I do those things. Is it
- 36:57Speaker 1: security that you're looking for when you buy lots of things?
- 37:00Speaker 1: Is that like a feeling of fomo that you love
- 37:01Speaker 1: this item and you never want it to run out,
- 37:03Speaker 1: therefore you get multiple of them, Like I definitely can
- 37:07Speaker 1: relate to purchasing multiple of things. Like if I love
- 37:11Speaker 1: a pair of work shoes that are super comfortable, like
- 37:14Speaker 1: you best believe I'll gone by them in neod as well,
- 37:16Speaker 1: So I get the feeling. But I also think that
- 37:20Speaker 1: having a bit of a sit down and understanding your
- 37:22Speaker 1: own mindset when it comes to stuff like that, and
- 37:25Speaker 1: maybe taking a bit of a leaf out of that
- 37:27Speaker 1: minimalism kind of lifestyle and working out like do I
- 37:30Speaker 1: actually need these things? Like why am I purchasing them?
- 37:33Speaker 1: And then maybe writing a list of things that you
- 37:35Speaker 1: could have purchased instead, or things that you could have
- 37:38Speaker 1: achieved instead that you can keep handy next time you want.
- 37:41Speaker 4: To do that.
- 37:42Speaker 1: And I think that that could be a way that
- 37:44Speaker 1: you could combat it. But at the end of the day,
- 37:46Speaker 1: like if that's what makes it super happy, like who
- 37:48Speaker 1: am I to judge? But at the same time, it's
- 37:50Speaker 1: obviously not financially productive, exactly right.
- 37:54Speaker 2: Last question for you, V was her grade. I think
- 37:57Speaker 2: it was a C minus. Did you have any thought
- 38:00Speaker 2: on that?
- 38:00Speaker 1: I think that's epic progress, especially given twelve months ago
- 38:04Speaker 1: she said she would have given herself an f like
- 38:06Speaker 1: look where she's going to be in another twelve months,
- 38:08Speaker 1: And I think that that's what we should always be doing.
- 38:10Speaker 1: We should always be looking forward and looking towards what
- 38:13Speaker 1: future us can actually achieve. And I just think that
- 38:15Speaker 1: it's honestly so inspiring. I cannot wait to hear that
- 38:18Speaker 1: she's gotten out of debt and she's started investing and
- 38:21Speaker 1: doing all of these other things. But what I really
- 38:24Speaker 1: loved about this story is that she has three thousand
- 38:26Speaker 1: dollars in saving and I think that that's really important
- 38:29Speaker 1: if you're in debt as well, Like having an emergency
- 38:32Speaker 1: fund is going to help you feel super empowered while
- 38:35Speaker 1: you're getting out of debt, so you don't just feel
- 38:37Speaker 1: like you're always stuck in a rut. So for me,
- 38:40Speaker 1: I really liked this story purely because it's so inspirational.
- 38:43Speaker 1: But there's obviously things that all of us could.
- 38:45Speaker 3: Fix exactly right they I reckon.
- 38:48Speaker 1: That's the end of the show, me too. But just
- 38:51Speaker 1: before we head off, we'd like to acknowledge and pay
