- 0:00What's up everyone? Welcome to the same Philly
- 0:02sports history for July 29th, 2023.
- 0:06I'm your host Jim Montgomery coming at July from rainy
- 0:10Pittsburgh. So that sound you hear in the
- 0:12background is the rain. But good good win for the Phils
- 0:20Trey Turner. Just I I don't know.
- 0:22I I think he's in his own head and I don't know whether the the
- 0:26best thing to do is just keep playing him to let him get out
- 0:30of it or give him a few days off.
- 0:32But man like he's just just not there.
- 0:36Chris Wheeler was dealing before the rain came and then it was
- 0:40actually funny. I don't know what you were able
- 0:42to see on the Philly stations but out here they the ground
- 0:47screw completely bungled the pulling the tarp out which was
- 0:51kind of funny. There was just like that big
- 0:54thing right outside of home played the big puddle of which I
- 0:57saw a couple guys once they came back but they move on.
- 1:01They play this afternoon will be on my way to Cleveland in a few
- 1:05hours for the family reunion but overall good win for the Phils
- 1:10will take it get the win move on.
- 1:13I'm fully fully expecting a deal to happen this weekend with some
- 1:17of the dominoes that have been falling.
- 1:18So as that those details come out, we will have more on that.
- 1:24And I do want to say there's a ton of Philly fans here.
- 1:27We stopped at one of the rest stops on the Turnpike on the way
- 1:30out and there was just people with Philly's jerseys
- 1:33everywhere. So decent crowd last night.
- 1:37Even the the people from out here were saying that they were
- 1:39just like oh wow that that's a big crowd for for a day.
- 1:43So Philly fans were definitely traveling well, beautiful park
- 1:47one day I'll get out there but good win for the Phils.
- 1:50They play again this afternoon. If you want more Phillies
- 1:54coverage, check out our friends at 2008 Phil's.

- 2:41autographs, that type of thing. And it's just $2.00 a month or
- 2:44$20.00 for the year. Definitely worth it.
- 2:46Go check it out for a limited time.
- 2:49I am going to be giving away probably at some point next
- 2:52week, probably Tuesday. I'll do it for August 1st.
- 2:55I have three free one month subscriptions to give out.
- 2:58All you have to do is like subscribe and leave a comment
- 3:01wherever you're listening to this and I will give them out
- 3:04next week, but definitely check it out.
- 3:07Worth worth the 20 bucks for the year and it's follow the
- 3:11specific link in the description wherever you're getting this
- 3:16Eagles news. Derek Barnett restructured his
- 3:20contract and I kind of like it. It's a good it's good for the
- 3:23team as well as him kind of a prove it deal.
- 3:26Saves the Eagles some money. He's been injury prone.
- 3:30I always have a special spot in my heart because he was the one
- 3:33that was responsible for recovering the fumble when
- 3:37Brandon Graham strip sacked creating the Super Bowl, but he
- 3:40hasn't really done much else since then.
- 3:43As we get into August, we're going to be looking at questions
- 3:46for the Eagles season coming up and Derek Marnett is definitely
- 3:49one of the things we will cover. But I always liked him.
- 3:53I just wish he didn't get hurt as much.
- 3:55So hopefully this will be a good motivator and something that'll
- 3:58get him going this year. Just some things, news and notes
- 4:03from what I'm seeing. And apparently Nolan Smith has
- 4:06been looking incredible at camp. He's been getting a ton of
- 4:10playing time with the ones due to Hassan Reddick having a sore
- 4:15groin, which I mean, if you can get that kind of production out
- 4:18of your first round pick to kind of keep Hassan Reddick fresh,
- 4:24man, look out. There was a interview with Sean
- 4:30to say on the way out we were listening to.
- 4:32You didn't really say much, but I I like his energy.
- 4:35It seems like he has way more of a personality than Gannon did.
- 4:38So I'm thinking that's going to translate onto the field.
- 4:43And he's very, he seems like he's very motivated and wants to
- 4:46get the most out of these guys and put them in the best
- 4:48position. So if you got a guy like Nolan
- 4:50Smith showing you something when he's getting the opportunity,
- 4:55definitely I think is going to be good news for that defense,
- 4:58which comes in we. I talked about the questions
- 5:00that we're going to be covering in August.
- 5:03Defense is definitely one of those those areas due to all the
- 5:06people that left A J Brown by all accounts seems like they've
- 5:11everybody's been saying he's been dominating a lot of days of
- 5:14Kayus looks good in the slot is the #3.
- 5:17That's a battle I'm interested in watching is that battle for
- 5:22the third receiver, that slot receiver between Zedes and Quiz
- 5:25Watkins. And I haven't heard much about
- 5:28quiz yet, but I have heard things about the case.
- 5:32So hopefully that just leads to both of them.
- 5:35And we're in a good spot because both of them are can be good and
- 5:39have the potential. And Siriani, I mentioned it
- 5:42yesterday, apparently he laid into them really hard today or
- 5:47yesterday at practice. And I think that's good because
- 5:50what he's trying to do is keep them from being complacent and
- 5:53they're saying the right things, but to actually do it is
- 5:55another. So he's definitely trying to
- 6:00keep them motivated and do what he needs to do.
- 6:02So I'm hoping he keeps up with that as well as the Harden
- 6:07turns. Not really much about Harden.
- 6:11This is more about the Clippers today the so a couple news
- 6:14outlets reporting that the Clippers really aren't that
- 6:17serious about what they want to give up.
- 6:21They're hoping that as training camp comes and this plays out
- 6:26that the Sixers are going to grow tired of his BS and just
- 6:29kind of trade him for nothing, which I hope is the opposite
- 6:33because you got to get something for him.
- 6:36So we'll see. I mean it's like I said, I mean
- 6:40until training camp starts or one of these trades happens,
- 6:44this is what we're going to be dealing with.
- 6:47All right. Today we're going to go back to
- 6:481984 and on this day, July 29th, 1984, Phillies beat the Expos 6
- 6:55to 4 when Ken Matuzak hit a two run, pinch hit home run in the
- 6:59bottom of the ninth. However, Juan Samuel led off the
- 7:04game on the first pitch, hitting a home run.
- 7:06Von Hayes followed that up with a Homer of his own and it
- 7:11became, and this is surprising in the the 100 years at that
- 7:15point or 101 years, they were. This was the first time in
- 7:19Philly's team history that they let off a game with back-to-back
- 7:22home runs. It has happened four times since
- 7:2686. Gary Reedus and Juan Samwell did
- 7:28it 96 Lenny Dykstra and Mickey Morandini, 04.
- 7:32J. Roll and Placido Polanco and
- 7:352014 J. Roll and Will Nieves.
- 7:39But on this day, it was the first time the Phillies had ever
- 7:42let off a game with back-to-back home runs.
- 7:44Juan Samwell took the first pitch, Von Hayes followed that
- 7:47up with a Homer of his own. And then this.
- 7:51Phillies actually beat the Expos on a walk off 6:00 to 4:00 when
- 7:55Len Matuzik hit a two out pinch hit or two run, pinch hit, home
- 8:00run to win the game for the Phils.
- 8:03You know who else is going to walk it off for you?
- 8:06Philly. Go go check them out.
- 8:07It's back to school. The Eagles are coming out with
- 8:09the Kelly Green. Hugh Douglas has been wearing a
- 8:11few of their shirts I've seen on his Twitter account.
- 8:14Just go check them out. Anything you want, whether it's
- 8:18Philly Sixers, Flyers Union, Philly culture, Philly Pride,
- 8:24you name it, they have it. Kids, sizes, hats, sweatshirts.
- 8:27It's going to get cold. Believe it or not, trust me when
- 8:29I say it's going to get cold at some point.
- 8:31Go get a hoodie, Check them out phillygoat.com.
- 8:35Make sure it has the authentic goat on the sleeve and then use
- 8:37the promo code Jim Montgomery for 10% off of your order.
- 8:43All right, the final four is set.
- 8:47Philly Sports Most Lovable Loser tournament, The Sixers bracket
- 8:52or the Sixers Regional was decided last night as the 2000
- 8:562001 Sixers One over the 8182 Sixers with 89% of the vote.
- 9:03They will take on the 2022 Phillies tomorrow, but today
- 9:09it's our first Final Four matchup.
- 9:11It's the 2022 Eagles taking on the 9697 Flyers we all know
- 9:17about the 2022 Eagles, that magical run to the Super Bowl
- 9:20last year disappointing and in the Super Bowl against the
- 9:24Chiefs that has a set up with high hopes and expectations for
- 9:28this year. Jamin Hertz broke out and came
- 9:32into his own. The defense was dominant.
- 9:34Siriani got his shit together. So a very, very good team, very
- 9:39disappointing team. And that was the whole goal of
- 9:43this. This tournament was teams that
- 9:44disappointed us. Taking on the 96 Seven 9697
- 9:48Flyers who were equally disappointing, finally turned it
- 9:52around, got to the promised land with Eric Lindros.
- 9:56After giving up so much, they had that fame Legion of Doom
- 9:59line with Leclair and Renberg and just couldn't get it done.
- 10:05They rolled through the playoffs that year and then forgot how to
- 10:08score in the Stanley Cup against the Red Wings, who were becoming
- 10:12a dynasty of their own. Sort of the high point of
- 10:17Unfortunately, the Eric Lindross era never got any better for him
- 10:21in Philadelphia at that point. So now it's your turn.
- 10:25Who wins? Who's Philly's most sport?
- 10:27Who's Who gets a spot in Philly Sports Most Lovable Losers
- 10:30Tournament final? Will it be the 2022 Eagles or
- 10:34the 9697 Flyers? Let me know however you want.
- 10:37Text message. It's raining out here.
- 10:40I'm sure it's coming that way to Philly.
- 10:42Don't send a smoke, signal the fire.
- 10:43Get put out, but leave a comment however you got to.
- 10:47Let's get this let's figure out who is going to be in the finals
- 10:52on this day. Back in 1984, Juan Samuel and
- 10:55Von Hayes let off the game with back-to-back home runs for the
- 10:59first time in Phillies club history as the Phillies beat the
- 11:03Expo six to four in dramatic fashion.
