- 0:00Doing Marriage Well for May 6, 2026 Pastors, Lay Leaders, and Small Groups Help
- 0:06Within Your Church The second level of getting help is someone at your church.
- 0:10That could be your pastor or some other leader or individual who is recognized by the church.
- 0:15When I ask about getting marriage help on the TMB message boards,
- 0:19link in the show notes, several folks question the qualifications of pastors.
- 0:24Others do not feel comfortable sharing about their marriage and especially their
- 0:27sex life with their pastor.
- 0:30The first is a valid concern. Many pastors have received little or no training
- 0:34for counseling in general, much less marriage issues.
- 0:37Beyond that, statistically, pastors have far worse marriages and sex lives than
- 0:42the majority of their congregants.
- 0:43I know exceptions to that, but they are, sadly, exceptions.
- 0:48I can understand feeling uncomfortable listening to your pastor give a sermon
- 0:51when he knows all your dirty laundry, but pastors are generally very good at
- 0:55keeping things private.
- 0:57Still, if it will hinder you or your spouse, that makes it a no-go choice.
- 1:01Larger churches, and some medium-sized ones, have people in their church who
- 1:05have been vetted and possibly given some training.
- 1:07This can be an excellent option. You are sure what is said won't conflict with
- 1:11your faith, and it will probably be free or low cost.
- 1:15Privacy may feel like a concern, but if the church backs it,
- 1:18that should not be an issue.
- 1:20Some churches may expect some minor feedback from those doing marriage work
- 1:23with people, especially of those being coached or in leadership.
- 1:26This should be disclosed at your first meeting, and you can certainly ask.
- 1:30It's unlikely this kind of help will come with credentials or licensing.
- 1:34Don't let that stop you. Many couples have found great help from laypeople.
- 1:38There are issues that are beyond such help, but those situations are uncommon.
- 1:42One other form of church-based help is a small group focused on marriage.
- 1:47Often they work through a marriage book. I've seen some amazing things happen
- 1:50in such groups over time you grow to know and care about each other.
- 1:55Once I was in such a group where a wife said, I need to say something to my
- 1:58husband in front of all of you.
- 2:00They had a very difficult talk as we all sat and prayed.
- 2:03This resulted in a great breakthrough for them. Maybe she would have eventually
- 2:07been able to have the discussion without the group, and maybe it would have gone okay.
- 2:11But it happened sooner and worked out better because of the group.
- 2:15When we meet together in the name of Jesus, He is there and good things happen.
- 2:19This is Paul, and doing marriage well may require you going beyond the two of you.
