Latest / Doctor Turned Health Coach / 3 Beliefs That Are Holding Your Health Back
Transcript
- 0:23In today's episode, I wanted to take a look back at some of my patients and,
- 0:30share with you guys some of the most important beliefs that are holding people
- 0:34back from actually improving their health.
- 0:39As a family medicine physician and health coach, I've coached a lot of people
- 0:45now, and I've certainly taken care of tens of thousands of patients over these past two decades.
- 0:53So the top three things are the thoughts and beliefs that I've seen come up over and over.
- 1:02And what's really interesting about it is once people understand that this was
- 1:09a flawed way of thinking, once they actually achieve their ideal health goals,
- 1:15they then come to realize like,
- 1:18oh my gosh, I had no idea that this way of thinking was flawed.
- 1:22If I only knew back then, how much easier would my journey have been so without further ado,
- 1:31the first one is that they believe they can't be strong they can't be fast,
- 1:39they can't be skinny they can't be pain-free any version of this that maybe
- 1:46applies to you think about the one health,
- 1:51goal that you have the one thing that you're really after, the one thing that
- 1:55if you had it or achieved it would make you believe that you're finally there, that you've succeeded.
- 2:03For people who are trying to lose weight or look more fit or be stronger,
- 2:11they often just think that it's really not possible with my body type.
- 2:17It's really not possible given my genetics or there is just no way.
- 2:22I am too busy. I have too many things going on.
- 2:26I get injured when I try to lift. I get really hungry when I try to fast.
- 2:31These are what we call limiting beliefs. A limited belief is a belief that is
- 2:38holding you back and you tend to double down on.
- 2:42So even if an expert comes along and says, well, you could try this and you
- 2:47could try that, you probably will still hold on to that belief.
- 2:52Even worse, you might hold on to it subconsciously.
- 2:56And on the outside, tell yourself that you really are doing all the things necessary.
- 3:03Now, I'm not saying at all that this is about harder work.
- 3:07If anything, the biggest mistake that my health coaching clients make is they
- 3:13try too hard, which actually takes us to point number two, to the second most common thing that I see.
- 3:21This is the belief that they have to make drastic changes, major sacrifices,
- 3:29or else they won't get the results they're after.
- 3:32They believe that only with drastic health changes, only drastic lifestyle changes,
- 3:40will they see the results that they're after.
- 3:44And this is always false because drastic changes almost never are sustainable.
- 3:52These are the habits that you will often give up on very quickly.
- 3:59Over these past two decades, I've learned that the small, tiny habits are the
- 4:06ones that are most likely to stick, that are most likely to be successful,
- 4:12and are the habits that are the easiest to adopt.
- 4:15So while you might think that I have to go vegan, that's the only way,
- 4:20I have to cut my calories by 50%, that's the only way, I have to run for an
- 4:26hour every single day if I want the kind of health,
- 4:31or physical body that I'm after.
- 4:33These beliefs are holding you back because these are drastic changes.
- 4:39When in reality, all you need to do is probably set your alarm to get up every
- 4:46one hour and just walk a little bit.
- 4:49Maybe when you plan your meal for the day,
- 4:53you add in a little bit more vegetables you don't change anything else you just
- 4:58add in a little bit more vegetables or more beans and there you go,
- 5:04you will already see drastic improvements great results without having,
- 5:10had to sacrifice a lot.
- 5:13This takes us to point number three.
- 5:16Many believe that there is some secret out there that they haven't yet discovered.
- 5:24They jump from expert to expert, from specialist to doctor to nutritionist to
- 5:32chiropractor to naturopath.
- 5:35They do test after test after test, hoping that somehow they'll discover that one secret.
- 5:43I think the source of this probably comes from the biohacking community where
- 5:48people experiment on themselves and eventually they discover that one thing,
- 5:54that was a game changer for them.
- 5:56And I actually do believe that if you search enough, you will find something
- 6:02that's going to work better for you.
- 6:04But the searching is not the important part.
- 6:07It's the trial and error. It's testing and reiterating.
- 6:12That's the part that a lot of my clients miss.
- 6:16They're searching for an answer, but they've never really attempted all the
- 6:21ways in which they need to fail before they find that one thing that really works for them.
- 6:29I've not discovered that one secret. It even hasn't been these GLP-1 medications,
- 6:37because they have side effects.
- 6:40They are expensive. And when you do lose weight, you also lose muscle mass.
- 6:45And when you do curb your appetite, you're also changing the way you feel and your heart rate goes up.
- 6:53But that doesn't make these medications less effective.
- 6:57It's just that there is no secret. These medications give you a result at a cost.
- 7:06Maybe the cost for some people is financial and for somebody else.
- 7:11They realize that they have to take this medication forever.
- 7:15Whatever it might be for you, I hope that these three things,
- 7:20believing that you can never achieve your health goal, number one,
- 7:24number two, that you need to be really drastic with your changes, or number three,
- 7:30that it's a secret that's out there, not your trial and error that's going to
- 7:34help you achieve your health goal.
- 7:37If you can internalize these three things now, You will save yourself so much
- 7:43headache, so much money, so much cost,
- 7:46so much frustration down the line, because you will achieve your ideal health
- 7:51goals and do it much easier than anybody else.
