- 0:05Welcome to The Hypnotist, the show that gives you inside
- 0:09access to cutting edge hypnosis with real clients facing
- 0:12genuine. Issues.
- 0:13Brought to you by The Hypnotherapist, demanded by
- 0:16celebrities, CEOs and even royalty, Adam Cox.
- 0:20These recordings took place live from Evans Clinic in London's
- 0:24world famous Harley Street. So get yourself comfortable and
- 0:31enjoy today's episode of The Hypnotist.
- 0:39Hi, it's Adam here and you're about to listen to a hypnosis
- 0:43session all about having the resilience and the emotional
- 0:48resources to cope with either a toxic boss or someone that is
- 0:54bullying or micromanaging in nature.
- 0:58And I was working with a client. That was very.
- 1:00Very successful. They'd climbed the career
- 1:03ladder, got themselves in a very, very high position, but
- 1:06they happened to have a new line manager that they were directly
- 1:12reporting to that would take the credit for the work that they
- 1:16did. Play them out of position, they
- 1:20would undermine them and ask them questions in a quite an
- 1:22aggressive interrogative type of way.
- 1:26They would give them more and more things to do outside of
- 1:29their core responsibilities and be quite passive aggressive and
- 1:35almost kind of see if they can get under their skin.
- 1:39Now that's not a healthy environment to be and in the
- 1:41long term is a lose lose situation.
- 1:44Sometimes you get managers that are quite insecure and they like
- 1:48to belittle and make other people feel small.
- 1:51But nobody can survive in a toxic environment for too long.
- 1:55Either they quit, you know, or they just find something else to
- 2:00do or situations change wherever they're in.
- 2:04And what this client originally felt as they felt quite helpless
- 2:08and they felt quite frustrated and they were getting burnt out
- 2:11because they were working way beyond their contracted hours
- 2:15and they were not really getting the benefit of that.
- 2:19So they felt between a rock and a hard place.
- 2:21So what this session does is it makes them feel that whatever
- 2:24happens, things are going to change.
- 2:27Either the dynamics where they're working are going to
- 2:29change, or they're going to find somewhere else to work and that
- 2:32will be the change. But in the meantime, we wanted
- 2:35them to feel resourceful as possible to handle it.
- 2:40And there's two key things. 1 is a metaphor of a force field, and
- 2:45most people have seen at least one cartoon, TV show or movie
- 2:49that has this representation of a force field.
- 2:53And normally it's some kind of energy sphere that kind of goes
- 2:57around the hero. It means they're immune to kind
- 3:01of laser beams or any kind of destructive things like bullets.
- 3:07It's a force field. It protects them.
- 3:09So that's the connotation of a force field.
- 3:12And then the second is this kind of spirit of composure.
- 3:16And actually, one of the techniques that particularly
- 3:20toxic bosses will use is they thrive with ambiguity.
- 3:26They'll say, right, just get it done without defining what it
- 3:29means, or you can do better than that without defining actually
- 3:34what success looks like. So when dealing with people like
- 3:38that, it's a really good idea to feel composed and curious and
- 3:42say, OK, what would it take to be successful in this situation?
- 3:47Or I've got so many things that I need to do if I have to
- 3:50prioritize one, which is more important than the other.
- 3:54And the moment you start having this mirror back in terms of
- 3:58accountability and responsibility, a lot of their
- 4:02power goes away. Now, quite often when these kind
- 4:06of toxic bosses start feeling like they're losing power, their
- 4:11reaction is to try and be more aggressive or pushy.
- 4:15So that's why the force field alongside these kind of
- 4:18communication strategies is quite necessary and useful.
- 4:23And one of my favorite belief systems is that you get what you
- 4:27tolerate, not what you deserve. And unfortunately, if someone's
- 4:31mean to you, rude to you, disrespectful to you, and by
- 4:36being rude, mean or disrespectful, they get more
- 4:39productivity or they get more results or they get more credit
- 4:44that they're taking from the work that you do.
- 4:47Actually, you're enabling that. You are encouraging and
- 4:50positively, positively reinforcing the very behaviour
- 4:54that you don't want. And a boundary is a boundary.
- 4:58A boundary is what you are willing or not willing to do,
- 5:02and you have the right to do this.
- 5:04Now, a lot of time fear is used and that stops people because a
- 5:09lot of individuals will go inside their head and
- 5:11catastrophize and say, but I need this job and I can't pay
- 5:14the rent or the mortgage without this job and maybe I'll get a
- 5:17bad reference. And all of these things are used
- 5:21as a weapon, as a stick to threaten and coerce people into
- 5:25doing what the toxic boss wants them to do.
- 5:30But if you feel liberated in the sense that no, I have.
- 5:33These boundaries, I'm going to stick to these boundaries.
- 5:35I'm willing to work a little bit extra, but I'm not willing to
- 5:37work weekends. And they become your boundary.
- 5:39What you tend to find is that it forces the other person to
- 5:44respond accordingly. And do you really want to stay
- 5:48in a place where you're not being appreciated or respected
- 5:51anyway? So I would encourage you to
- 5:53think of your specific environments and then tap into
- 5:57this idea of a force field. And what would managing this
- 6:01relationship and managing that future look like for you?
- 6:04And if you like the idea of a bespoke session working with me
- 6:07directly, I would say a great thing to do in the first
- 6:10instance is either to take a suggestibility test, a
- 6:13suitability test, or watch a webinar that I've created.
- 6:17Both of those things are in the description of this episode, so
- 6:20check that out. Click on them and you'll be able
- 6:23to go through the information there.
- 6:25For now, though, find a quiet, comfortable place where you
- 6:28won't be distracted or disturbed.
- 6:30Relax. And enjoy the session.
- 6:40Take a deep breath in, and as you breathe in, breathe in that
- 6:50resourceful feeling of calm and relaxation and every exhale,
- 6:59consider it a release valve, allowing any emotions that have
- 7:07been building up you feel like you've been suppressing or just
- 7:12bubbling under the surface. Just allow them to be released
- 7:18gradually and incrementally every time you breathe out.
- 7:28And when you breathe in, breathe in for longer, not just from
- 7:35your chest, but down from your diaphragm.
- 7:39That's it. And as you exhale, allow it to
- 7:46keep on exhaling. The deeper you breathe, the more
- 7:53relaxed you feel. And the more relaxed you feel
- 7:59the deeper you breathe. Scan your body for any clues of
- 8:05stress, worry or tension. Sometimes it's there in the
- 8:10forehead or the jaw or the neck or the shoulders.
- 8:17Hands in and really feel a sense of release.
- 8:26As your body relaxes, your imagination awakens, and I
- 8:33wonder if you could imagine what it would feel like to breathe in
- 8:38a color of pure relaxation. Maybe it's yellow or orange or
- 8:49something else you just imagine. It's soothing your nervous
- 8:54system, and as you exhale, imagine something dark, shadowy
- 9:00grey. Imagine releasing tension,
- 9:06stress or worry. The body's been working very
- 9:13hard, carrying more than one person's emotional weight.
- 9:23It's been managing the professional and the personal
- 9:26and the physical all simultaneously.
- 9:31And it deserves, right now, the complete permission to release
- 9:37and just put all of that down. As you exhale, allow the
- 9:44shoulders to release, allow the jaw to soften, the hands to
- 9:50open, the tiny space between the eyebrows to just smooth and
- 9:57release. And maybe you notice that as you
- 10:03release these physical holdings, something else begins to shift
- 10:08to the quality of the internal space.
- 10:18A little more room, a little more quiet, a little more of the
- 10:23sense that you are, right now, entirely safe and entirely
- 10:32allowed to rest. You've been the most regulated
- 10:40person in a dysregulated system for a while.
- 10:47Not just exhausting, but draining in a specific way the
- 10:58exhaustion of someone who's been carrying their own resources and
- 11:03someone else's chaos simultaneously.
- 11:08And right here, right now, is the place where you release the
- 11:14chaos and nurture those internal resources.
- 11:24I want you to imagine as I count down from 5 to 1, drifting to a
- 11:30haven within, perhaps a memory, perhaps a place that you've
- 11:38always felt safe, calm and relaxed.
- 11:43As I countdown from 5 to 1, just imagine floating to that place.
- 11:51Five, drifting, floating, 4 just feeling the weight lifting off
- 11:57your shoulders, and three perhaps accessing a thought, a
- 12:04memory of feeling. 2 Arms and legs feeling limp, loose and
- 12:10relaxed as you sink into that space of pure relaxation. 1
- 12:20Arriving perhaps here at the very center of yourself when no
- 12:29one else has any influence over you.
- 12:34Not work related. No deadlines, no conditions,
- 12:41facial expressions of disappointment or passive
- 12:45aggression. It doesn't exist here in this
- 12:47place. And when the nervous system has
- 12:53been running at this elevated level for a while, something
- 12:59happens that's worth understanding.
- 13:03All of that cortisol, adrenaline, stress, obsessive
- 13:08thoughts starts to feel normal. The tension in the shoulders or
- 13:13the jaw becomes background noise rather than signal.
- 13:20That low grade alertness stops feeling like stress and starts
- 13:26feeling like this is how things are.
- 13:31Vigilance becomes normality when you remind yourself of a time of
- 13:39pure relaxation and rest, internal harmony and calm.
- 13:46The contrast becomes clear as the body finds its way to
- 13:52genuine relaxation and stillness.
- 13:57The difference between that elevated state and how you're
- 14:02feeling now is unmistakable. Notice what you notice when you
- 14:11feel more relaxed. Maybe breathing slower, head
- 14:17lighter, That tension in your neck or your jaw just seems
- 14:21loose and relaxed. Maybe you can even scan your
- 14:27body and notice your heart rate starting to slow, muscles
- 14:34releasing. Maybe you're at your baseline or
- 14:40close to it, the state your body is designed to inhabit as the
- 14:46default. It's not been your default
- 14:50recently. You've been on high alert.
- 14:57You've been playing the game someone else wants you to play,
- 15:02but your body remembers, and the nervous system always remembers
- 15:09what rest feels like, even if it's been a long time.
- 15:21The body in genuine rest is doing some of its most important
- 15:24work, processing, integrating, clearing the accumulated
- 15:32chemical residue of sustained stress, restoring the
- 15:38neurochemical balance that sustained alertness depletes.
- 15:46Your nervous system knows how to rest, and you're giving it full
- 15:50permission to do so now. And every time you sleep, and
- 15:58every time you consciously choose to step back from all
- 16:03those burdens and demands that are not yours to carry.
- 16:10And you've seen movies and read books where a character has a
- 16:16force field. Maybe a superhero or science
- 16:22fiction book. An empath needs a force field.
- 16:31The empath needs boundaries. A wall shuts things out, but it
- 16:41also shuts things in. But a force field is different
- 16:47from a wall. Imagine a force field or
- 16:52something permeable in both directions.
- 16:55By deliberate choice, you allow what comes through and what
- 17:02leaves, but anything you choose not to is prevented.
- 17:10You can extend your attention and your empathy and your
- 17:15considerable professional intelligence through it fully
- 17:21when you choose to, and you can withdraw them just as
- 17:26completely. What comes toward you from
- 17:31outside passes through a membrane that you and only you
- 17:37control. You already have this
- 17:43capability. Sometimes people have it in a
- 17:48relationship or a friendship. Someone that used to be able to
- 17:54trigger them, they just make a decision and say no more.
- 18:00The words no longer sting. The power, the hold no longer
- 18:07has the same impact. And I want you to imagine a
- 18:14force field in relation to one specific person.
- 18:24Just imagine seeing yourself, maybe on a meeting, maybe face
- 18:31to face or over a call. But imagine that version of you
- 18:38in your future, with a field of energy surrounding you.
- 18:45It's not armour, not heavy and rigid.
- 18:50Something more like a quality of light just at the edge of your
- 18:54personal space, A glowing membrane that is entirely yours.
- 19:03Maybe it's a color that represents resilience,
- 19:09detachment. Imagine that version of you
- 19:15surrounded by that force field. A force field you created and
- 19:21only you control. Notice the brightness, the
- 19:28colour, the intensity of it. If it has a texture, maybe a
- 19:35texture like glass, like glowing light, maybe it has a
- 19:44temperature, a Halo, luminescence.
- 19:52Just observe and then see that characteristic energy, you know,
- 20:00the tonality, the facial expressions, abruptness.
- 20:09Maybe it's interrogative questions in rapid succession,
- 20:18stopping you talking mid sentence, a sigh.
- 20:24Facial expression. Allow them to be exactly who
- 20:29they are and have shown themselves to be.
- 20:33But within your force field, something's different.
- 20:39Her energy does not permeate the force field.
- 20:47Maybe 1% of that energy is able to get through.
- 20:57You've had times where you've been out in the sun and you've
- 21:03had some some protection, some lotion, and you know that only a
- 21:10tiny percent of the sun's damage can get through, and therefore
- 21:18you can be out in the sun for longer, safe.
- 21:23So imagine that version of you with this force field, perhaps
- 21:31listening but not triggered, perhaps more calm, composed.
- 21:43There'll be clues in your facial expression, your breathing,
- 21:50unflustered, calm, professional. See the version of you entirely
- 22:02intact inside. And then take a first person
- 22:09perspective. Imagine she dials up her energy
- 22:17but you feel calm and relaxed inside the force field.
- 22:30Because you feel different, you can behave different.
- 22:36Can respond to a question with a question.
- 22:40What specifically do you mean by that?
- 22:44You've given me 5 things, which is the most important.
- 22:52If you were me, what would you prioritize first?
- 22:57And if you're met with sarcasm, abruptness, still feel that
- 23:05composure, calmness. Unflappable.
- 23:12This is not you being cold or detached.
- 23:15This is not the shutdown of your empathy, it's the professional
- 23:20deployment of it. Your empathy is being used to
- 23:26understand what is happening, not to absorb what is happening.
- 23:36Some people figure out what buttons to press in.
- 23:40Other people, if they press those buttons and they get more
- 23:46of what they desire, they'll keep pressing those buttons
- 23:54until those buttons don't work anymore.
- 23:59And I want you to imagine this force field enables you to be
- 24:04professional, competent, but now unwilling to play a 0 sum game
- 24:16where someone else benefits and you lose.
- 24:23Take a breath now inside the force field and breathe in pure
- 24:28resourcefulness. And as you exhale, feel the
- 24:32force fields settling into place around you.
- 24:37See the collar, feel the energy, the intensity, and just imagine.
- 24:47Imagine connecting without feeling a feeling that you have
- 24:58resources within the force field and anything that has been
- 25:03sapping those resources can no longer get through.
- 25:12And reach a point of acceptance. You can accept that people are
- 25:19different. Different backgrounds, different
- 25:25beliefs, different narratives. Perhaps they were rewarded by
- 25:34being this way, maybe they have no incentive to change.
- 25:44But that does not require you to change to accommodate them.
- 25:59I want you to get a sense that here you feel empowered.
- 26:08You've decided this whole game only works if you care about
- 26:16losing something that is already proven to be no longer desirable
- 26:23for you. When you reject the premise,
- 26:28you're free from any connotations of it.
- 26:37You don't need to meet that interrogation energy with
- 26:41defensiveness. You can be open upfront and if
- 26:54they amplify or escalate, that's on them, not you.
- 27:05I need to get a growing sense that her behaviour is
- 27:08predictable, may be linked to insecurity narratives of
- 27:17justification. I want you to get a sense that
- 27:22it is not personal, that if someone else was doing your
- 27:30exact role, they would probably experience a very similar energy
- 27:37and style of management. Let's play a game.
- 27:49Let's imagine that the more intense, the more like them that
- 27:58they are, the more comfortable and detached you feel.
- 28:12Consider yourself in reconnaissance, gathering
- 28:15information, soaking it all up. If you're asked a question, you
- 28:23can pause before a response. Good saying, let me think about
- 28:30that and I'll get back to you. Allow yourself to feel that you
- 28:39have options. You can play your game, and I
- 28:49want you to go back to who you were before she was there.
- 28:55Compliments you've received, successes, achievements.
- 29:03Your value, your competency is not diminished simply because
- 29:11someone else is in the role that they're in.
- 29:16All that's happened is that someone has an agenda, is
- 29:21playing a game, and for now, up to this point, your good
- 29:29intentions, you seeing the best in others, has meant that you've
- 29:38been playing their game. But it reaches a point where
- 29:43enough is enough. And if you've been punished for
- 29:48playing that game, why would you continue to play it?
- 30:01Feel required of that state within the force field.
- 30:05Notice how you breathe when you feel relaxed in the force field.
- 30:12How you breathe, You're in a dialogue.
- 30:16Your posture is exactly what harnesses this feeling.
- 30:27Your professional value was built before they arrived and
- 30:32will be intact long after this odd dynamic ends.
- 30:40It is yours and it cannot be taken.
- 30:50I want you to get a sense sense of feeling.
- 30:55Then when they won't change, the onus is on you to change.
- 31:10I want you to think of just two or three boundaries, rules,
- 31:22conditions, non negotiables that you now need to protect you in
- 31:32response. I want you to think of two
- 31:36countries, two countries side by side that used to be friendly
- 31:42neighbors until one of them becomes an aggressor.
- 31:48And if that friendly neighbor continues to be friendly, they
- 31:56will be exploited by the more aggressive.
- 32:03And I wonder what boundaries you need to protect.
- 32:09What is valuable. Time is a boundary.
- 32:19Maybe you choose to protect certain time and refuse to do
- 32:26certain things in that time. Or maybe it's time you take to
- 32:29respond. Another boundary might be what
- 32:39you're willing to tolerate. Bad things happen to good
- 32:46people. You get what you tolerate, not
- 32:52what you deserve. And when you refuse to tolerate,
- 32:59the status quo is no longer viable.
- 33:10Another boundary is your words, your actions.
- 33:21You don't have to decide them now.
- 33:22Just allow your mind to consider what boundaries would keep you
- 33:28safe, would stop the encroachment, stop the erosion.
- 33:39And I want you to get a sense that there is no requirement for
- 33:51you to tolerate a role or you're not valued.
- 34:01If the circumstances won't change, you can choose to change
- 34:06the environment and if your unconscious feels empowered to
- 34:13no longer tolerate. What doesn't serve?
- 34:15You let me know I'm pointing your head.
- 34:20That's it. And take that feeling back as
- 34:25you float from where you are into the present, as you take a
- 34:30deep breath in through your nose and out through your nose.
- 34:36Wiggle your fingers, wiggle your toes.
- 34:39Connect and calibrate into the here and the now as I now count
- 34:44from 1:00 to 10:00 to awaken you.
- 34:48Starting to count 123 waking up 456 more alert 7-8.
- 34:56Open your eyes. Open your eyes 910.
- 35:00Wide awake. Wide awake.
