- 0:50SPEAKER_01: I'm Comedy Wood, and I am thrilled that you've decided to spend a few minutes of your day with me today.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: I wanted to take us on a little journey over the next few episodes on the concept of cultivating happiness.
- 1:03SPEAKER_01: This has been a common theme in several of my client calls over the last, I'd say the last several weeks, and even people reaching out to me of just really feeling like they they want to get to that happy place.
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: They want happiness in their life, but they just feel like it's it's still eluding them for some reason.
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: So, you know, really what causes happiness?
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: It's a feeling of pleasure that is tangled with our thoughts and experiences.
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: It's brought on by significant life events as well as simple daily pleasures.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: Truthfully, our happiness depends on uh, you know, our experiences, the places we go, the people we meet.
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: True happiness, though, really starts with yourself.
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: To cultivate true, authentic happiness, we really need to turn to ourself, really need to turn to that relationship with self in order to create simple happy habits, in order to cultivate happiness.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: Because the truth of the matter is when we continue to look for happiness external to where we are or who we are, it's constantly a moving target.
- 2:07SPEAKER_01: We are dependent upon something that could be here today but gone tomorrow.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: So, how do we cultivate happiness from that intrinsic place, from that internal place?
- 2:17SPEAKER_01: So today I'm gonna talk about the very first one, which is being present.
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: You know, oftentimes we get stuck in um replaying something from our past, replaying something that has already happened, and we're really trying to unpack it and to figure out why that happened and what we should have done differently.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: And there's a lot of judgment, and we're we're stuck in that place of regret almost of what's already happened.
- 2:44SPEAKER_01: The truth of the matter is we can't undo the past.
- 2:47SPEAKER_01: We can learn from it, we can be compassionate to ourselves, but we can't undo what has been done.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: The other thing that happens is we tend to future trip.
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: Many times we spend time in our day, time and energy worrying about things that have that have not happened yet.
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: You know, there's one thing to come up with this concept of, well, you know, I have a plan B.
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: I totally get it.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: That is who I am as well.
- 3:13SPEAKER_01: It's, you know, I'm planning on this, but here's my plan B just in case.
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: But what happens is we let our monkey mind take over and we start living in the future.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: We start solving problems that don't exist, and then we create other problems on top of those problems.
- 3:26SPEAKER_01: So if we're really trying to cultivate happiness, we have to learn to be present.
- 3:31SPEAKER_01: We have to start being in our here and now.
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: How do we do this?
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: Well, you know, and I talk about this a lot, and I've talked about it on the podcast.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: I talk about it on podcasts that I guest on, as well as just even with my clients.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: It's about being mindful, really having a mindfulness practice.
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: It when we're when we're in the here and now, we actually become more self-aware of those automatic negative thoughts or the negative uh self-talk that we have.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: We're able to hear that inner critic pop up.
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: And from that place of awareness, we can then accept and acknowledge that we're we might be having those negative thoughts, or we might be having that inner critic's voice pop up in our head.
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: But then we can make aligned action.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: We can make a commitment to ourselves of how we're going to move forward in this moment.
- 4:18SPEAKER_01: So when we are practicing mindfulness, it's about being in a state of the current-present moment, not living in the past and not jumping into the future, but being in the here and now.
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: And we play pay careful attention to what we are experiencing.
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: The best way that I have talked about this with people, uh, one of the best tools that I know of in order to create a sense of mindfulness is to uh really dial into what your five senses are experiencing.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: Really allow for your five senses to um to recognize what they're experiencing.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: You know, what am I hearing in this moment?
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: What do I see?
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: What can I smell?
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: What can I taste?
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: What can I touch around me?
- 5:04SPEAKER_01: When we allow our senses to fully experience what's happening in the here and now, it brings us into this place of awareness, it brings us into the present moment, and it is a way to be mindful.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: Other practices include, you know, taking that conscious pause, really paying attention to our breath, really paying attention to what our body is feeling, scanning our body and really paying attention to where tension might be in our bodies and what it might be telling us.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: That again is a way to cultivate present moment awareness.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: So I hope that this was helpful today.
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: Uh, tomorrow we're going to continue on this journey of how to cultivate happiness.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: But for today, I encourage you to practice a little more mindfulness.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: See if you can take those pauses during your day and really get present in the moment that is happening here and now.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: Until next time, I'm Comedy Wood, and I look forward to speaking with you soon.
