- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Hello and welcome to the Aligned Actor Podcast.
- 0:03I'm Amy Schloerb,
- 0:03your friendly fellow actor and mindfulness and mindset coach.
- 0:07And this is the podcast where I share practical mindfulness
- 0:10tools and mindset
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: shifts to help us all thrive in our full actor lives.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: Because as we all know, actor life can be a real son of a B.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: It's full of ups and downs.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: It's got twists,
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: it's got turns,
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: they're sometimes full on loop-de-loops,
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: just like life,
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: yet more stressful even,
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: I would say.
- 0:32And the only way that we will survive long term in this
- 0:36profession I'm going to
- 0:37turn up my brightness all the way on my screen so I look even
- 0:41better Anyway,
- 0:42the only way that we will survive long term in this profession
- 0:47is if we are taking
- 0:48care of ourselves and finding effective ways to handle all of
- 0:52the stress that the
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: entertainment industry can throw our way
- 0:57We're doing a deep dive series on the podcast right now on
- 1:00mindfulness because
- 1:00mindfulness can really act as a balm for all of the trials and
- 1:05tribulations of
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: actor life.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: In this episode,
- 1:09we are going to really break down what's happening in a formal
- 1:13mindfulness session
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: so that you can find out and just see how simple the process actually is.
- 1:21And hopefully this helps to demystify mindfulness meditation
- 1:24for you and make it
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: feel even more accessible.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: So in the simplest terms, mindfulness is about focusing and noticing.
- 1:35We practice formal mindfulness meditation by focusing on the
- 1:39sensation of our breath.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: And then with our breath as our anchor,
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: we notice whatever is happening in our present moment,
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: both internally and externally.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: And we do all of this with a general attitude of kind curiosity.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: So internally, you might notice thoughts, thoughts about the future,
- 2:04I wonder how much traffic there's going to be today Thoughts
- 2:08about the past I can't
- 2:10believe I messed up that one line on that audition Thoughts
- 2:14about the present I
- 2:16really wish that that leaf blower would stop You might notice
- 2:21moods or emotions and
- 2:23perhaps those might be associated with the thoughts that you're
- 2:26thinking You might
- 2:27be experiencing dread about the traffic or worrying that you
- 2:30might be late for an
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: audition or for work
- 2:35You might be experiencing and feeling shame or self-doubt about
- 2:39that audition and
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: whatever happened in it.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: You might be feeling a lot of irritation at that leaf blower.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: And you might also internally notice body sensations.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: So you might notice tension in your neck and shoulders.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Or you might notice an itch on your elbow.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: Or maybe you notice your tummy is rumbling because you skipped breakfast.
- 3:03And externally,
- 3:04you might notice pretty much anything that your five senses can
- 3:07perceive.
- 3:08So you might notice the sound of an airplane going overhead or
- 3:11the sight of a
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: candle if you're choosing to use that as a focus object.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: Or if you have your eyes closed,
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: you might just notice changes in light and shadow as you're practicing.
- 3:23You might notice the feel of your clothing on your skin or the
- 3:28smell of the lotion
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: that you put on your hands or the smell of the room around you.
- 3:34And you might notice the leftover taste of coffee or lunch that
- 3:39you just had All of
- 3:42those things that your five senses are picking up on So as
- 3:47we're focusing on our
- 3:48breath in mindfulness meditation There's potentially a lot of
- 3:52things trying to get
- 3:54and keep our attention And that's fine That's just what's
- 3:59present for us in that
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: moment
- 4:02And the trick though with mindfulness meditation is to notice
- 4:06whatever is present
- 4:07in that moment without allowing anything to completely take
- 4:12over our mind and cause
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: our focus to completely drop from our breath.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: And when that happens,
- 4:22it's as if a thought or a mood or a sensation or a sense
- 4:25perception has claimed
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: center stage of our mind
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: It's hogging the microphone and it is not sharing the spotlight.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: And this is going to happen.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: It happens to all of us.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: It happens to me.
- 4:39And I've been practicing mindfulness meditation for a pretty
- 4:42long time now.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: And it's no big deal.
- 4:46There will be times during a mindfulness session when a thought
- 4:50or a sensation or
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: whatever will completely hijack our attention.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: Our mind wanders completely away from the present moment.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: And when we notice that,
- 5:02all we have to do is gently guide our focus back to our
- 5:08experience of breathing.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: And the key word there is gently.
- 5:20So I want you to think of your wandering mind like an excited
- 5:24actor who's just won an award.
- 5:27So they're caught up in the moment and they're so eager to
- 5:30thank everyone that
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: they've ever met.
- 5:33But if we let them stay up on that stage for too long and say
- 5:37everything they've
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: ever wanted to say and thank everybody that they can possibly think of,
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: we're going to be here all night long.
- 5:48They've had their moment of acknowledgement and it's time to
- 5:51get the show back on track.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: But
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: In all those award shows,
- 5:57have you ever seen two burly security guards come out and grab
- 6:02an actor roughly and
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: haul them off stage?
- 6:05Does the crowd berate them if they've gone on just like a
- 6:08little bit too long?
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: Do they start yelling like, get off the stage!
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: I didn't really like your picture anyway!
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: You're ruining the show!
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: Nope.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: None of that.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: Of course that doesn't happen.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: What does happen is very gently the orchestra begins to play
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: Alerting the actor to wrap it up.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: And if the actor continues much longer,
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: eventually their mic volume just fades out and the MC continues the show.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: It's simple, it's gentle, and it's very effective.
- 6:44And that's the level of gentleness that I want you to use with
- 6:49your wandering mind
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: in mindfulness meditation.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: So at various times throughout your mindfulness session,
- 6:57your mind is going to get caught up in thoughts or emotions or
- 7:01sensations.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: It's gonna go to the past or it's gonna go to the future.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: It's just gonna happen.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: And when that happens, there is absolutely no need to beat yourself up.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: You can just gently fade the mic on that distraction,
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: whatever it is,
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: and gently bring up the mic on your breath.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: So even if your mind is chaotic AF and it wanders a lot.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: Oh, what if I take that audition?
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: I'm so worried.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: Maybe I should call my agent and see if maybe I can get another shot.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: Oh, I'm having thoughts about that audition, but that's in the past.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: Let me come back to my breath.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: Oh, I'm so tense.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: I just can't relax.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: I want to meditate, but I can't relax.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: Oh, I'm really struggling with this tension.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: Let me just come back to my breath.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: Oh, that leaf blower is just so annoying.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: I wish they would go away.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: I am hearing a sound that I perceive as unpleasant, to say the least.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: But let me come back to my experience of breathing.
- 8:26Rinse and repeat over and over and over and over throughout the
- 8:34session a thousand
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: times if needed.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: And that is exactly what we are going to practice in the next episode.
- 8:45So thank you so much for joining me today I hope that you found
- 8:48this content
- 8:49helpful and inspiring wherever you found it if you found it on

- 9:10about mindfulness and
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: learn how valuable it is and how much it can help
- 9:15soothe and fortify our actor nervous system so that we can
- 9:18handle whatever the
- 9:19entertainment industry throws our way so I would love it if you
- 9:23could share it with
- 9:23as many actors as you can and also if you could check out my
