- 0:00Hello everybody, welcome back to Unlocking the Paradigm Portal.
- 0:03My name is Sarah. So this is the companion episode
- 0:07to The Body as the Map of the Ordinary World, the episode I
- 0:11released last week. And in that episode we talked
- 0:14about the ordinary world and what it is and what it feels
- 0:17like from the inside. So today we're going to do some
- 0:20somatic practices and we're going to feel it directly in the
- 0:23body where it actually lives. So you can do this seated or
- 0:27lying down, whatever your body wants right now.
- 0:29You can stand and move around if you want, though most of it is
- 0:33with your eyes closed. So just be careful you aren't
- 0:35going to bump into anything and definitely don't do this while
- 0:38you're driving. And before we get into this, I
- 0:41want to say I am not a medical professional.
- 0:43I am a somatic practitioner. So I do work with the body and I
- 0:48am a licensed massage therapist and a somatic breathwork
- 0:51practitioner. However, if you are having any
- 0:55physical symptoms that are concerning or pervasive or
- 0:59continuous for a long time, it doesn't hurt to go get it
- 1:02checked out. In fact, it's a good idea just
- 1:04to make sure that there's nothing underlying.
- 1:05OK, so today, there's no wrong way to do this.
- 1:10You don't need to do anything or fix anything or get anything
- 1:13right. Today is just a practice of
- 1:16witnessing, not performing. So get yourself settled wherever
- 1:20you are. You ready now as you're
- 1:23settling? And before we drop into the
- 1:25body, I want to explain why we're doing this.
- 1:28Because understanding why changes how deeply you'll be
- 1:30able to receive it. So the mind is a brilliant
- 1:34negotiator, and it can rationalize almost anything.
- 1:38It can tell you a life is fine when it isn't, and it can talk
- 1:42you out of a feeling in under a second.
- 1:44I know you know what I'm talking about.
- 1:47So the mind has learned over years how to manage and minimize
- 1:51and explain away. The body, however, cannot do
- 1:54that. The body keeps an honest record,
- 1:57all of your experiences and your perceptions and the trauma
- 2:00you've been through that is stored in the brain, but the
- 2:02body is the one that's showing you and giving you signals that
- 2:06it's stored there. And you weren't going to be able
- 2:08to make the connection until you learn to feel into your body.
- 2:12So let's give a few examples of what that record actually looks
- 2:16like, because I want you to be able to recognize it in
- 2:18yourself, not just hear about it in abstract concepts.
- 2:23So think about the person who is, on paper, doing everything
- 2:27right. They have a great job or a good
- 2:29job, they have a good relationship, they have a good
- 2:31life, and yet their shoulders live up in their ears.
- 2:36Does this sound like you? I know it's me at times too.
- 2:39And it's not because anything is actively wrong in the moment,
- 2:43but it's because some part of that person has been bracing for
- 2:46years, anticipating the next thing they'll need to manage.
- 2:49And the shoulders never got the message that it's safe to put
- 2:52that down or think about your breathing.
- 2:56Most people don't think about it because we just do it.
- 2:59And most people who are living inside a life that's become too
- 3:02small are breathing into the top third of their chest.
- 3:06They're taking shallow, quick breaths that are barely moving.
- 3:10And it's not because they're in danger right now.
- 3:12It's because their body learned a long time ago that staying
- 3:15small and contained felt safer than taking up the full space
- 3:18that a deep breath requires. Or think about your jaw.
- 3:23I know this is a big one for me. I clench my jaw all the time.
- 3:27It's like an unconscious clenching.
- 3:30And I check in with that when I go to bed at night, and it's
- 3:32always doing that. And most often, it's not about
- 3:36anything that's being said, it's about everything that's not
- 3:39being said. The words that get held back or
- 3:43the opinions that get softened or needs that get minimized
- 3:46until the body just starts holding the tension where the
- 3:49words would have been. Or even simpler, tiredness.
- 3:54A tiredness that is so deep it doesn't make sense because you
- 3:57sleep enough and you're still tired.
- 4:00Now that's not always a medical mystery, however, there are
- 4:04physical symptoms and issues that can present that way.
- 4:07So please go to your doctor if you ever have concerns or
- 4:11questions. Go to your doctor if you feel
- 4:12like your doctor is minimizing or dismissing you.
- 4:15Push harder. I am a huge advocate of self
- 4:18advocacy. Do not back down if you know or
- 4:23feel that something is not OK. So when it's not a medical
- 4:28mystery, it can be the cost of years spent performing a version
- 4:32of OK that the body never really believed.
- 4:35And none of these are problems to fix.
- 4:36Their clues, their guideposts. They are the body's record of
- 4:40the ordinary world, the physical cost of a life lived at less
- 4:44than full capacity, even a good life, even a life that you love.
- 4:50The ordinary world isn't always bad, but it does have a cost,
- 4:55and the body is where that cost gets stored.
- 4:57So today we're going to read that record together.
- 5:00Not to fix it or judge it, just to see it clearly, honestly,
- 5:05with compassion because that witnessing of yourself, that's
- 5:10the work. So now that you've settled in,
- 5:14we're going to begin. So go ahead and close your eyes
- 5:18or soften your gaze downward if that feels better.
- 5:21But I would prefer, if you're able to, to close your eyes
- 5:24fully. That way you're staying with
- 5:26your body completely. Now, if you've struggled with
- 5:29your body for any reason, whether it's trauma, body
- 5:32issues, eating disorders, whatever it may be, it might
- 5:36feel very, very difficult to be in your own body.
- 5:39And if that's the case, just like I said, soften your gaze,
- 5:43look downward, just pick a point to stare at and try to start to
- 5:48bridge that gap of feeling into your body.
- 5:50And remember, whatever you feel, it's just sensations.
- 5:54And just like waves at the ocean, it may come up.
- 5:58And if you allow yourself to breathe and sit with it, it will
- 6:01recede back. Most people, when things start
- 6:04to come up, they get scared because it feels scary and they
- 6:08immediately shrink their breathing and they try to
- 6:11distract themselves with something else.
- 6:14So take a slow breath in, in, through your nose, out through
- 6:17your mouth and let it go. And now do that again.
- 6:26Breathe in and release. Now do one more in and out.
- 6:40And now these don't have to be big deep breaths.
- 6:43You can just breathe normally and notice too.
- 6:46If breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth
- 6:48is uncomfortable, try it in and out through your mouth.
- 6:51That's good data too, because there's nowhere else that you
- 6:55need to be right now, and nothing else that you need to do
- 6:58just this. Just arrive in yourself through
- 7:02some gentle breathing and just notice.
- 7:07And if you're feeling any of those feelings come up, or if
- 7:09you're feeling uncomfortable, just let your body know it's
- 7:13safe to actually be here without bracing for what's next.
- 7:18And if taking the deep breaths is uncomfortable, whether it's
- 7:22physically or emotionally, then just breathe normally.
- 7:26There's no, like I said, there's no right or wrong way to do
- 7:28this. So I want you to bring your
- 7:31attention to your shoulders. So just keep breathing in and
- 7:36out and notice where they are. Are they up near your ears even
- 7:40slightly? Are they holding up there like
- 7:45bracing for something? And you don't need to change it
- 7:49yet, just notice it. This is information, not a
- 7:51problem. So keep breathing in and out
- 7:57while you check in with your shoulders.
- 8:01And now bring your attention to your chest.
- 8:05Does it feel open? Does it feel maybe a little bit
- 8:09collapse, like your shoulders are rounded forward?
- 8:14Does it feel tight, like it's hard to get it to expand?
- 8:19Or does it feel spacious, like it just expands easily with
- 8:22every inhale? So just keep breathing and
- 8:28notice all of these sensations. You're just tuning in to what
- 8:32your body is doing right now. Now as you keep breathing, check
- 8:40in with your breath. Where does it live right now?
- 8:47Is it shallow? Is it staying high up in your
- 8:49chest like it's easier to breathe up higher?
- 8:54Or does it have room to move into the belly?
- 8:59There's no right answer. Just notice where it actually
- 9:02is. And if you're laying down, it
- 9:06may be easier to breathe into your belly.
- 9:08If you're sitting, it might be a little bit more difficult.
- 9:13And if you've spent your life holding your core in really
- 9:17tight, This is especially something that happens with
- 9:19women. We hold our bellies in.
- 9:22It can feel really weird to try to expand your belly out with
- 9:26your breath, and you don't need to change that, just notice it.
- 9:34So keep breathing in through your nose, out through your
- 9:36mouth, or if that's not comfortable, in and out through
- 9:40your mouth. And now tune into your jaw for a
- 9:46minute. Do you feel any tension there?
- 9:52Maybe there's a little bit of a clench, even one that you
- 9:54weren't aware of a few minutes ago.
- 9:58Are your teeth pressed together? Where is your tongue in your
- 10:04mouth? Is it pushed up against the roof
- 10:07of your mouth, or maybe pressed up against the back of your
- 10:11teeth? Or is it laying softly in your
- 10:15mouth? All of these are just data
- 10:19points to collect and notice. So keep breathing and now just
- 10:27take a moment to notice your whole body at once.
- 10:32Where are you holding tight? And it may be none of those
- 10:37areas. Maybe your hands are in fists,
- 10:40maybe your toes curled over. Maybe you have what I refer to
- 10:46my clients as butt clench. When you tighten your glute
- 10:49muscles, that's a bracing movement.
- 10:53It's similar to clenching your jaw, hiking your shoulders up.
- 10:56It's almost like preparing to run or preparing to for
- 11:01something to come that you need to be ready for.
- 11:06So where are you bracing in your body?
- 11:13And as you keep breathing, just notice where is there tightness
- 11:17that's been there so long it stopped registering as tightness
- 11:20at all and it kind of just became normal.
- 11:28Check in with your face, your forehead, are your eyes
- 11:32scrunched really tight? Are your eyebrows pulled
- 11:37together? Just keep breathing and just
- 11:43notice. Your body works so hard for you.
- 11:47It deserves a few moments to have you just pay attention to
- 11:51it. So all of these sensations and
- 11:58areas of tension and areas of ease that you have found, this
- 12:03is the body's record of the ordinary world.
- 12:07This is what it has cost you to manage and to hold it together
- 12:11and to keep going. And you don't have to do
- 12:15anything with this yet. Just witness it.
- 12:17That's enough. So now we're going to work with
- 12:24the breath directly, because the breath is one of the fastest
- 12:28ways to speak to your nervous system in a language that it
- 12:32actually understands. So we're going to do something
- 12:36simple, an extended exhale. So the exhale is what tells your
- 12:41nervous system it's safe to release.
- 12:45So we're going to make the exhale longer than the inhale.
- 12:50All right. So breathe in through your nose
- 12:52for a count of four, and then exhale through the mouth for a
- 12:59count of 6, and work at your own pace.
- 13:10Everyone's ability to inhale and exhale is totally dependent on
- 13:14your body. So if you need to go through the
- 13:17numbers a little faster, that's a place to start.
- 13:20That's OK. If you've been doing this for a
- 13:22while and you can breathe slower, that's beautiful.
- 13:26Whatever your body wants. So now let's do that again.
- 13:31In through the nose for four counts and then out through the
- 13:37mouth for six counts. And now one more time in and
- 13:52then out, slow, long releasing. And as you keep breathing this
- 14:04way, let your belly soften. Notice if you're holding your
- 14:08abdominal muscles tight, and just try seeing if you can let
- 14:13them soften, let them actually move with the breath instead of
- 14:18staying braced. And if it helps, you can place a
- 14:24hand over your belly and let it rise and fall under your palm.
- 14:31Now keep breathing at your own pace now in through the nose,
- 14:34longer out through the mouth, and let each exhale be a small
- 14:41permission slip. It's safe to let go of a little
- 14:45bit more. And with every exhale, you're
- 14:51releasing carbon dioxide. That's toxins that have built up
- 14:55in your system, and you're literally purging them out.
- 14:59You're purging the worries out, the anxieties, the fears.
- 15:04And just in this moment, it's just you letting all of that go.
- 15:11There's nothing to force. Just let the body find its own
- 15:14rhythm of release. So as you continue breathing, I
- 15:23want to leave you with one question.
- 15:25You don't have to answer it out loud.
- 15:27Just let it land. What has become too small, Not
- 15:32what should change and not what you should want.
- 15:35Just think about this. What has quietly, honestly
- 15:40become too small? Let the question sit in the
- 15:45body, not just in the mind. And if something tightens when
- 15:49you ask it, notice it. And if something softens, notice
- 15:55that too. The body usually knows before
- 15:58the mind catches up. So what has become too small?
- 16:09Now take one more breath in and then on the release, long and
- 16:15slow. Now let your breathing go back
- 16:22to its normal rhythm and then slowly, in your own time, let
- 16:29your eyes open if they were closed, and take a moment before
- 16:34you rush back into the rest of your day.
- 16:38Notice if anything feels different in your body right now
- 16:41compared to when we began, even just something little and
- 16:44subtle. And remember, the ordinary world
- 16:50is not the enemy. It is necessary.
- 16:54But your body has been keeping the truth this whole time, even
- 16:59when your mind couldn't quite find the words.
- 17:05So keep breathing, keep letting yourself come back into the
- 17:08room, back into your body even more.
- 17:11But now you're back with more of an awareness and every week
- 17:17we're going to do another stage of the hero's journey and I'm
- 17:21going to do an add on of the somatic breathing connected to
- 17:24that stage. And my goal is to release it
- 17:28sooner than this because my week was a little crazy.
- 17:33So thank you for showing up for yourself today and I will see
- 17:37you in the next one when we tackle stage 2, the call to
- 17:41adventure. Have a wonderful day.
