- 0:33Speaker 2: Let's get into it.
- 0:34Speaker 3: She's on the Money. She's on the Money.
- 0:57Speaker 4: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money, the podcast
- 1:00Speaker 4: that let's you be pervy about other people's money stories
- 1:02Speaker 4: for educational purposes, of course. Welcome back to another one
- 1:06Speaker 4: of our Money Diaries episodes where I get the absolute
- 1:08Speaker 4: privilege of sitting down and talking to one of our
- 1:10Speaker 4: beautiful She's on the Money community members all about their journey.
- 1:14Speaker 4: Let's jump straight into it, because this week I got
- 1:17Speaker 4: a message and it sounded exactly like this, Dear She's
- 1:20Speaker 4: on the Money. We grew up quite poor and it
- 1:23Speaker 4: was especially bad in high school. I remember Dad couldn't
- 1:27Speaker 4: afford our textbooks or my school fees. My parents each
- 1:30Speaker 4: worked two jobs and we'd go with mom and dad
- 1:33Speaker 4: every school night to their second job, cleaning offices. I've
- 1:36Speaker 4: been trying to overcome my scarcity mindset, and in the
- 1:39Speaker 4: last two years, thanks to She's on the money, I
- 1:41Speaker 4: have savings for the first time, I've invested for the
- 1:44Speaker 4: first time in shares, and I was able to help
- 1:46Speaker 4: my parents while they were overseas getting treatment for my
- 1:49Speaker 4: mum money diarists.
- 1:51Speaker 2: That was a fit emotional.
- 1:53Speaker 4: Oh my goodness. Yeah, I just feel like there's a
- 1:56Speaker 4: lot to unpack there, like not only are you a
- 2:00Speaker 4: super special person, but like mom and dad working two
- 2:04Speaker 4: jobs and like cleaning offices, Like what Queen and king
- 2:09Speaker 4: are they?
- 2:09Speaker 2: Like?
- 2:09Speaker 4: I just feel like they're the types of pearance that
- 2:11Speaker 4: you just know love the shit out of their kids.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, definitely.
- 2:16Speaker 4: Oh that's so special money doce. I want to ask
- 2:19Speaker 4: so many questions before we get there, though, What would
- 2:22Speaker 4: you grade your money habits if I asked you to
- 2:24Speaker 4: give them a grade from A through TOIR?
- 2:25Speaker 2: Okay, so I'm going to say a C, and I
- 2:28Speaker 2: only say that because the last like eighteen years of
- 2:33Speaker 2: my life have been like really bad scarcity mindset, kind
- 2:37Speaker 2: of like not really saving. It's something been in the
- 2:39Speaker 2: last two years, maybe last year, that I've been able
- 2:41Speaker 2: to turn it around. So I'm basing that grade like overall, Yeah.
- 2:45Speaker 4: I can already see why you have a scarcity mindset
- 2:49Speaker 4: and how challenging it would be to move on from that,
- 2:52Speaker 4: Like it's just so ingrained in everything that you do,
- 2:55Speaker 4: and even the fact that you want to talk about it,
- 2:57Speaker 4: like it's so special. So let's just dive in. Can
- 3:01Speaker 4: you tell me a little bit more about your money story.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Yeah, So we grew up family six. We lived in
- 3:07Speaker 2: a three bedroom house, nothing fancy. It was my older
- 3:11Speaker 2: sister in one room and then me and my two
- 3:13Speaker 2: other siblings in another. We had a bunk bed and
- 3:16Speaker 2: single bed kind of like side my side, and we'd
- 3:18Speaker 2: make little thoughts so.
- 3:19Speaker 4: Cute though and good memories.
- 3:22Speaker 2: I don't really remember much in terms of like childhood
- 3:27Speaker 2: distresses there. It was more when we got into high school,
- 3:31Speaker 2: Dad not being able to afford our textbooks, let us
- 3:33Speaker 2: be sent home about school fees being over due. Just
- 3:36Speaker 2: like this memory that sticks out in my head. And
- 3:37Speaker 2: every time I think about it, I get a bit
- 3:39Speaker 2: worked up. Because Dad couldn't afford the textbooks, and my
- 3:42Speaker 2: sister was two grades above us. We were re using
- 3:45Speaker 2: her Italian workbook and obviously she'd written in it, and
- 3:48Speaker 2: I decided to like liquid paper over it or like
- 3:50Speaker 2: rub out where she'd written it. And I was like
- 3:52Speaker 2: so embarrassed that I had this like secondhand workbook and
- 3:56Speaker 2: everybody had these like pristine white new work books. And
- 4:00Speaker 2: that was like really triggering for me.
- 4:02Speaker 4: I feel like that it's always the small things, right,
- 4:04Speaker 4: Like it's always the small things that you remember that
- 4:07Speaker 4: really had an impact. And that doesn't mean that we
- 4:09Speaker 4: need to do all the small things right as parents,
- 4:11Speaker 4: right because we honestly are doing our best. It's always
- 4:14Speaker 4: that sticking point, right, Like I even remember like way back,
- 4:18Speaker 4: you know, definitely not a similar situation, but a sticking
- 4:21Speaker 4: point for me. I desperately wanted the school bag, like
- 4:23Speaker 4: the one with the logo on it. I didn't just
- 4:25Speaker 4: want a Kmart school bag, which is what I had.
- 4:27Speaker 4: I wanted the school bag that every other kid had.
- 4:30Speaker 4: And one was like that is a waste of money,
- 4:31Speaker 4: Like absolutely not, We're not getting that, and I'm still like, oh,
- 4:35Speaker 4: I just wanted to feel like I had the same
- 4:37Speaker 4: school bag from my public primary school that everybody else had,
- 4:41Speaker 4: but I just had plainline. It was fine, and like
- 4:44Speaker 4: all of that worked, but it's always that that sticking
- 4:46Speaker 4: point that you think everybody is paying attention to, but
- 4:49Speaker 4: I can promise you they're not. But for you, that
- 4:51Speaker 4: was pivotal.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Even the embarrassment of like, oh, we have Ali snacks.
- 4:57Speaker 2: I don't want to shop at Aldi. That's so embarrassing.
- 4:59Speaker 2: And now I'm like freaking our I love a healthy.
- 5:01Speaker 4: Yeah, but it's all about mindset, right because as a
- 5:03Speaker 4: kids like you don't have a lot of markers of
- 5:05Speaker 4: what success looks like. You don't have the ability to
- 5:08Speaker 4: step up and be like okay, yeah, but like you're
- 5:10Speaker 4: just saying, and like I have in my head the
- 5:12Speaker 4: bi low packets of chips, like I remember those and
- 5:15Speaker 4: being oh, kind of have the Smiths one. They're like
- 5:17Speaker 4: completely printed and all pink, and like kind of have
- 5:20Speaker 4: that in my lunch box. It's the same thing. Like
- 5:22Speaker 4: you best believe my kids are also not getting their
- 5:24Speaker 4: name brand chips. It's just not happening, Like that's not
- 5:27Speaker 4: an option. So yeah, it's so interesting. So what happened
- 5:30Speaker 4: after that? Like how did life go?
- 5:32Speaker 2: So they really struggled. So they got to a point
- 5:35Speaker 2: I think we're in like ye eight Mas twenty and
- 5:37Speaker 2: I were in the eight you know, nine, were the
- 5:38Speaker 2: youngest of the four girls. They started having to pick
- 5:42Speaker 2: up a second job, and we would go with them
- 5:44Speaker 2: every night to do these like night jobs, and Mum
- 5:48Speaker 2: would say, if you just help us, we'll get it
- 5:50Speaker 2: done faster and we'll be able to get out of here.
- 5:52Speaker 2: But we were just these like young kids and all
- 5:54Speaker 2: like whatever, and we'd potter around and not really help.
- 5:57Speaker 2: And so like the second jobs will run until like
- 6:00Speaker 2: eleven pm midnight, they'd go home, sleep and be up
- 6:02Speaker 2: by like five am to get to their day jobs.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Mum would commute into the eastern subbs, which was like
- 6:07Speaker 2: an hour and a half two buses and a train
- 6:10Speaker 2: to clean and then come back. Dad worked in a factory. See,
- 6:14Speaker 2: it was really hard and I actually found out I
- 6:16Speaker 2: don't why.
- 6:16Speaker 4: I'm going to self that thank you for being so
- 6:18Speaker 4: vulnerable the toll of like the financial stresses.
- 6:23Speaker 2: Dad actually did have a mini stroke during that time
- 6:27Speaker 2: that we didn't find out about until just a couple
- 6:29Speaker 2: of years ago. But Dad, now he's like, of course
- 6:33Speaker 2: I was stressed about money, but I was doing it
- 6:35Speaker 2: for my future and for your future. It's now like okay,
- 6:39Speaker 2: but it doesn't hurt any less knowing that he was
- 6:41Speaker 2: under that much press that he would have a mini stroke.
- 6:45Speaker 4: That's a lot. That feels like a really heavy burden,
- 6:49Speaker 4: that feels like you are probably feeling really guilty. Yes,
- 6:53Speaker 4: there's no guilt there, Like I can promise if I
- 6:56Speaker 4: sat down your parents and said would you do it again?
- 6:58Speaker 4: They'd say, hands down, absolutely, Like I already know they'd
- 7:01Speaker 4: be like, oh my goodness, we love our kids so
- 7:04Speaker 4: much more than we could ever explain, and we are
- 7:07Speaker 4: so insanely proud of them. They probably look at you
- 7:09Speaker 4: and go, that's why we did what we did, Like
- 7:10Speaker 4: they don't regret it for a date. And I think
- 7:12Speaker 4: that by carrying guilt it does nothing like it literally,
- 7:18Speaker 4: like guilt is an emotion that you feel because you
- 7:21Speaker 4: feel like you should have done something different or changed,
- 7:24Speaker 4: but you've still got a beautiful relationship with your parents,
- 7:27Speaker 4: Like it's not as though you lost that. In fact,
- 7:30Speaker 4: I feel like they've instilled this beautiful work ethic into you.
- 7:33Speaker 4: That is so nice, and like, I know that it
- 7:37Speaker 4: feels heavy, but like, I'm just so grateful that you
- 7:40Speaker 4: still have your dad here, Like, oh, I'm sorry that
- 7:44Speaker 4: it is so heavy, but I'm just so grateful that
- 7:46Speaker 4: you've been so vulnerable and actually want to share this
- 7:49Speaker 4: because it's so so hard to talk about too, right
- 7:52Speaker 4: it is. Yeah, so obviously all of that happened. What
- 7:55Speaker 4: happened when you turned eighteen? Like, when did you get
- 7:57Speaker 4: your first job? Tell me all about that.
- 8:00Speaker 2: So, my first job was at the cinemas. I applied
- 8:05Speaker 2: when I was fifteen. That's a cool girl job, the
- 8:07Speaker 2: best job I've ever had, hands down. I tell my
- 8:11Speaker 2: little niece, she's thirteen, I say, go and work at
- 8:14Speaker 2: the cinema. It is so much fun. That was my
- 8:16Speaker 2: first job. It's actually where I met my now de
- 8:19Speaker 2: Fucto partner.
- 8:20Speaker 4: Oh my goodness, love.
- 8:22Speaker 2: But I wasn't very good at saving back then either.
- 8:25Speaker 2: So things haven't really turned around until I started listening
- 8:28Speaker 2: to She's on the money, But that's okay.
- 8:30Speaker 4: We were just on our own journey. Yeah, so talk
- 8:32Speaker 4: to me about that. So you got your first job
- 8:34Speaker 4: at the cinema and then you turned eighteen, did you
- 8:36Speaker 4: change jobs, Like, what does that career trajectory look like?
- 8:40Speaker 2: I didn't go to UNI just because I was like, oh,
- 8:43Speaker 2: I think i'd rather work. So I got a job
- 8:46Speaker 2: in a magazine company.
- 8:47Speaker 4: Very cool.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Then from there I went to the equivalent of like
- 8:51Speaker 2: a group on. Then we got bought out by Groupon.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Then I was made redundant.
- 8:57Speaker 4: Oh my god, that's so stressful.
- 8:59Speaker 2: Right, yeah, and now I'm in the job that I
- 9:03Speaker 2: was at after I was made redundant. I've been there
- 9:05Speaker 2: for years now.
- 9:06Speaker 4: And so tell me what do you do for work now?
- 9:08Speaker 4: And how much do you earn?
- 9:09Speaker 2: Yeah? So I'm a product manager for a tech company
- 9:12Speaker 2: in the food industry. I earn one hundred thousand a year,
- 9:16Speaker 2: and I just as on Monday, actually got a twenty
- 9:18Speaker 2: percent pay rise.
- 9:19Speaker 4: I'm sorry, what in this economy? I joined tom pay
- 9:22Speaker 4: rise iconic.
- 9:25Speaker 2: I hadn't had one in many, many years. I'd actually
- 9:28Speaker 2: transitioned from a role within the company into product management.
- 9:32Speaker 4: Yeah, okay, and they haven'tted up. So they've been a
- 9:34Speaker 4: little cheeky, very very grateful to get that, very privileged.
- 9:39Speaker 2: So now that takes me to one twenty.
- 9:41Speaker 4: Look at you go. Did you ever think you'd earn
- 9:44Speaker 4: over one hundred grand. Like that's pretty cool, right, No way.
- 9:49Speaker 2: I remember when we brought our house in two thousand
- 9:52Speaker 2: and eleven, I was earning. I would think I was
- 9:54Speaker 2: on like forty grand at the magazine company. I could
- 9:57Speaker 2: barely with my month's wages cover my repayment.
- 10:01Speaker 4: But you did it. Yeah, Just like look at your
- 10:03Speaker 4: money story. And we don't even know the half of
- 10:05Speaker 4: it yet, but like, look at your money story in
- 10:07Speaker 4: comparison to your parents, Like what a bloody privilege the
- 10:12Speaker 4: sacrifices they made meant that you got here. And I
- 10:15Speaker 4: am already convinced that your work ethic would be so high,
- 10:20Speaker 4: Like I already know the reason you're in that job
- 10:22Speaker 4: for the last eight years is because they're probably obsessed
- 10:25Speaker 4: with you and the fact that you go above and beyond.
- 10:28Speaker 4: And you know what, I already know you go above
- 10:29Speaker 4: and beyond because you haven't had a pay rise in
- 10:31Speaker 4: so long. And you're like, you know, that's fine, Like
- 10:33Speaker 4: it's all good. I've just got work to do. Absolutely not,
- 10:35Speaker 4: my queen, absolutely not. So I'm so excited, Like your
- 10:39Speaker 4: parents must just be like, look, it was worth it,
- 10:41Speaker 4: Like it was so worth it and it feels trashy
- 10:44Speaker 4: looking back, but like, I think that being grateful for
- 10:48Speaker 4: the journey and trying to change your mindset around that
- 10:52Speaker 4: is going to be really positive. Like, and it's so
- 10:54Speaker 4: hard to do, right, It's not something that's easy, And
- 10:57Speaker 4: you look back and you feel like really guilty, but
- 10:59Speaker 4: you're like, how do I changed this into gratitude? Like
- 11:02Speaker 4: obviously as a kid, you were like, I don't want
- 11:04Speaker 4: to be here cleaning offices. I'm gonna doord all around
- 11:07Speaker 4: And you're like, oh my god, I would have done
- 11:08Speaker 4: so much more had I known. Your parents didn't want
- 11:11Speaker 4: you to know, babe, your parents didn't want to put
- 11:13Speaker 4: that burden on a child, and they were just trying
- 11:15Speaker 4: to make it as easy and nice as possible. Like
- 11:18Speaker 4: we're all just out here doing the best that we can.
- 11:20Speaker 4: So I just think that that's something that maybe we
- 11:23Speaker 4: can work on together. So talk to me a little
- 11:27Speaker 4: bit more about big money goals. You said him twenty
- 11:30Speaker 4: and eleven, basically when you were still a baby, because
- 11:33Speaker 4: you're thirty six now.
- 11:34Speaker 2: I was twenty three when we bought our.
- 11:36Speaker 4: House, so first home at twenty three.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Yeah, but I'm like, was pretty resistant to it. I
- 11:42Speaker 2: was like, oh, it's so. It was three hundred and
- 11:44Speaker 2: twenty thousand, so nothing like what people are paying now.
- 11:47Speaker 2: So yes, very privileged. My now partner was like, you've
- 11:51Speaker 2: just got to see the vision. I was like, this
- 11:53Speaker 2: place is gross. Want it no, but obviously super grateful
- 11:58Speaker 2: that we did it when we did. But it was
- 12:00Speaker 2: a struggle at the start, like even trying to make repayments.
- 12:04Speaker 2: My half of the repayments was a struggle. But now
- 12:08Speaker 2: obviously things are way better.
- 12:09Speaker 4: So tell me about now, like what are we currently
- 12:12Speaker 4: working towards? What are your big money goals? Obviously having
- 12:14Speaker 4: purchased a home in twenty eleven, I wouldn't say set
- 12:17Speaker 4: you up for life, but like it would definitely set
- 12:19Speaker 4: you on the right path. Yes, we're definitely going to
- 12:22Speaker 4: talk about scarcity mindset, but like we're not completely behind
- 12:26Speaker 4: the eight ball here, So what are we currently working towards?
- 12:29Speaker 4: What are our big money goals?
- 12:31Speaker 2: So up until maybe like December January, it was saving
- 12:35Speaker 2: to be off work for a while. I have I
- 12:37Speaker 2: think they call it like spondylosis or something like that,
- 12:40Speaker 2: where the discs in like your L five S one
- 12:44Speaker 2: which is responsible like bending and twisting and that it's
- 12:48Speaker 2: degraded down to like fifteen percent.
- 12:49Speaker 4: Oh my goodness.
- 12:51Speaker 2: And so I need to have back surgery and it's
- 12:54Speaker 2: meant to be like quite a big recovery.
- 12:57Speaker 4: Yeah. Both my parents have had significant back surgery. There's
- 13:00Speaker 4: a lot of downtime and a lot of physio and
- 13:02Speaker 4: a lot of everything after.
- 13:03Speaker 2: Yeah, they need to insert like a cage into the
- 13:06Speaker 2: disk space to raise the hype back up. It's pretty gross.
- 13:08Speaker 4: Yep, like just fix it. I actually don't want to
- 13:10Speaker 4: hear anything about it. I understand it, whereas my mom's
- 13:14Speaker 4: the opposite. It's like, tell me all of that if
- 13:15Speaker 4: you've got pictures, like.
- 13:16Speaker 2: Oh mom, no, so one saving for that. But my
- 13:21Speaker 2: GP had put me on controversially weight loss injections to
- 13:25Speaker 2: help me prep for surgery. Apparently the lighter you are,
- 13:28Speaker 2: the easier it is to recover from the surgery, and
- 13:30Speaker 2: there's like less to move about coming in from the front.
- 13:33Speaker 2: But that seems to have helped with some of the
- 13:35Speaker 2: symptoms that I've been having. So I'm deferring the surgery.
- 13:38Speaker 4: Oh my god.
- 13:39Speaker 2: Really, yes, And they say don't have back surgery when
- 13:42Speaker 2: you're young, because it does make it harder when you get.
- 13:46Speaker 4: Older obviously if there's no other option, but like, how
- 13:49Speaker 4: good that you had access to this, And like I
- 13:52Speaker 4: know that you said controversially, I just feel like it's
- 13:55Speaker 4: actually none of my bloody business. We're talking about a
- 13:58Speaker 4: prescription medication here that you accessed from your doctor under
- 14:03Speaker 4: correct consultation, like full stop in a story. That's not
- 14:06Speaker 4: my business, like to have an opinion on a drug.
- 14:10Speaker 4: I'm not a doctor, I'm not a pharmacist. I'm an
- 14:12Speaker 4: ex financial advisor. It's not my place. Like, I just
- 14:15Speaker 4: see so much of it online, Like I'm real pervy,
- 14:18Speaker 4: so I do definitely watch the tiktoks and stuff about it,
- 14:20Speaker 4: but like, be for real, Like imagine having an opinion
- 14:24Speaker 4: on somebody else's health. Ill, David, I love shit script.
- 14:30Speaker 2: The weird thing is the injections aren't doing what they're
- 14:32Speaker 2: meant to do, so I'm not losing any weight, but
- 14:34Speaker 2: it's I guess helping the pain side of things. So
- 14:38Speaker 2: I'm like, if that stops me having to have back surgery,
- 14:41Speaker 2: I will do it.
- 14:42Speaker 4: Honestly, that's so good. I'm so excited for you that
- 14:46Speaker 4: you found maybe something a little bit different on one
- 14:48Speaker 4: because it's so expensive, but two like that is such
- 14:51Speaker 4: a significant surgery that does really impact life forever, Like,
- 14:56Speaker 4: oh my goodness, so you are saving for that? Are
- 14:59Speaker 4: they any other big money goals you're currently working towards.
- 15:02Speaker 2: Well, now I'm trying to like rethink what I want
- 15:05Speaker 2: to do. I definitely want to build up my eight shares.
- 15:08Speaker 2: And I think i'd like to travel because we've had
- 15:11Speaker 2: a house since we were quite young, We've not really
- 15:13Speaker 2: traveled at all. Yeah, and I would love to do
- 15:15Speaker 2: maybe like six months off and do like Europe and
- 15:19Speaker 2: a couple of other places, just to like tick that
- 15:21Speaker 2: off the list. We're dinks, double income.
- 15:23Speaker 4: No kids, And is that going to ever change?
- 15:25Speaker 2: I don't think so.
- 15:26Speaker 4: I love that. And is that something that when you're
- 15:28Speaker 4: talking about financial planning, you guys like, all right, so
- 15:31Speaker 4: we just don't think kids are on the cards. That's cool.
- 15:33Speaker 4: But does that mean that we're having conversations about like
- 15:35Speaker 4: traveling significantly or are we talking about retiring early? Like
- 15:40Speaker 4: what are those conversations? Like, I can't relate.
- 15:41Speaker 2: It's a one sided conversation, to be honest. Yeah, Okay,
- 15:45Speaker 2: I really want to travel. He's pretty easy going. He's like,
- 15:48Speaker 2: if you don't want kids, that's fine. Like we don't
- 15:50Speaker 2: have to have kids. If you want to travel, that's
- 15:52Speaker 2: fine too. Like, he's pretty easy going. I think he
- 15:55Speaker 2: would like to retire.
- 15:56Speaker 4: Early, but we need a plan for that, so so
- 15:58Speaker 4: we're going to have to start talking about it.
- 16:01Speaker 2: Luckily, we're in really privileged physicians to own a good
- 16:04Speaker 2: amount of money, so if we wanted to, we just
- 16:07Speaker 2: kind of hammer away it, you know, setting ourselves up
- 16:09Speaker 2: to retire early.
- 16:11Speaker 4: Yeah, that's very cool, So talk to me a little
- 16:13Speaker 4: bit more. We mentioned scarcity mindset and how over the
- 16:16Speaker 4: last eighteen years it's something that you've really struggled with
- 16:20Speaker 4: and you haven't until recent times, really felt like you've
- 16:23Speaker 4: been on top of it. How does that impact you
- 16:25Speaker 4: day to day Because like, let's be honest, and people
- 16:27Speaker 4: are going to think, oh my gosh, relatable. But then also,
- 16:29Speaker 4: you told us you have a house, and I'm not
- 16:32Speaker 4: saying that's a bad thing. It's a very good thing.
- 16:34Speaker 4: But like I know that scarcity mindset comes in many
- 16:38Speaker 4: different forms. How's that impacting you? What does that look like?
- 16:42Speaker 2: I guess this like compulsion to check my budget spreadsheet
- 16:48Speaker 2: every week, check my bank account all the time, even
- 16:51Speaker 2: though I know that we're okay, it's the what if
- 16:53Speaker 2: we were to lose everything tomorrow? And I think even
- 16:56Speaker 2: a bigger driver is with that scarcity mindset. It is
- 17:00Speaker 2: like helping my parents if they ever were to need
- 17:03Speaker 2: me and wanting to be able to support them. That's
- 17:06Speaker 2: a big thing, but it is that really big compulsion
- 17:08Speaker 2: to like check things, not really wanting to spend, Like
- 17:12Speaker 2: even though I could buy address for sixty dollars if
- 17:15Speaker 2: I wanted to, I'm like my better or not? Or
- 17:18Speaker 2: even though this face cream is in sale, do I
- 17:21Speaker 2: really need it? Probably not a better just save that
- 17:25Speaker 2: money that sort of stuff.
- 17:26Speaker 4: Yeah, And like that sounds positive at the same time,
- 17:29Speaker 4: as I know it can be absolutely crippling because you're like, well,
- 17:31Speaker 4: I still want to have fun and I still want
- 17:33Speaker 4: to enjoy my life. And you're probably watching people in
- 17:35Speaker 4: twenty twenty five on social media doing the same thing.
- 17:38Speaker 4: You're like, well, why can't I be more like that
- 17:40Speaker 4: or do more things? And it's very frustrating because then
- 17:45Speaker 4: you're just like, well, let's say we just bought the
- 17:47Speaker 4: face cream and yoll loaded, I'm sure you've done that before.
- 17:49Speaker 4: And then you go home and you're like riddled with guilt.
- 17:51Speaker 4: You're like, well I didn't need that, and is this
- 17:53Speaker 4: a slippery slope? Am I just going to go downhill
- 17:55Speaker 4: after this? I never going to get back on track,
- 17:57Speaker 4: and like it just wasn't worth it. Like I think
- 17:59Speaker 4: that they're as the need to zoom out and do
- 18:02Speaker 4: some bigger worker on mindset and that budgeting and cash
- 18:05Speaker 4: low system, because it sounds like whatever your system is,
- 18:08Speaker 4: you're not feeling as confident in it as you could be. Like,
- 18:11Speaker 4: don't get me wrong, I check my budget every week.
- 18:13Speaker 4: I know where things are going. Like, that's actually quite healthy.
- 18:16Speaker 4: It's not a bad thing. But if you're compulsively checking
- 18:19Speaker 4: because you're like I just need to make sure we
- 18:21Speaker 4: are okay, what other things can we put in place
- 18:24Speaker 4: that are going to make you feel supported? So the
- 18:26Speaker 4: next question I have, which is not usually a money
- 18:29Speaker 4: Day's episode, have you ever spoken to a financial advisor
- 18:31Speaker 4: about your insurances?
- 18:33Speaker 2: No? I think we should do that because the insurance
- 18:36Speaker 2: is in my super Like, I'm very aware of this.
- 18:38Speaker 2: I want to change super funds. I too, like you
- 18:42Speaker 2: are with that very well known retel YEP, thea super
- 18:45Speaker 2: fun and it hasn't been performing well. I went onto
- 18:49Speaker 2: the government your super tool.
- 18:52Speaker 4: Were you in my live last night by chance? Because
- 18:55Speaker 4: I was talking about this on a webinar literally last night.
- 18:58Speaker 2: No, but I joined the first Foundation's workshop.
- 19:01Speaker 4: You did, ah, girlfriend, I always go off track. So
- 19:05Speaker 4: all of them are different. Like, if you guys think
- 19:07Speaker 4: you're getting a consistent experience with my finance foundation, of
- 19:09Speaker 4: course wrong. You'll get the same slides. But oh yap
- 19:12Speaker 4: around them.
- 19:15Speaker 2: Yes, so I want to change super funds, but the
- 19:17Speaker 2: insurances that are in there now, we don't want to
- 19:21Speaker 2: give them up. No. Yeah, I don't want to move
- 19:22Speaker 2: everything across because then I lose those insurances and with
- 19:25Speaker 2: my back issue, it just kind of complicates things.
- 19:27Speaker 4: We need to talk to a financial advisor. I promise.
- 19:30Speaker 4: I'm just going to push you towards talking to somebody
- 19:33Speaker 4: and I can set you up after with the person
- 19:36Speaker 4: that's done my insurances. And the reason I want you
- 19:38Speaker 4: to do that is because they're going to look inside superannuation.
- 19:40Speaker 4: They're going to check if you have enough cover. They
- 19:42Speaker 4: might even bump up your insurances inside super and be
- 19:45Speaker 4: like okay, money dice, you not covered enough for this,
- 19:47Speaker 4: and that they're going to talk to you about all
- 19:49Speaker 4: four types of insurance. So obviously inside Superanuation, you probably
- 19:53Speaker 4: already have life insurance and you probably have a smaller
- 19:56Speaker 4: income protection policy.
- 19:58Speaker 2: Yeah, that one was I think two thousand le than
- 20:00Speaker 2: two hundred a month. I actually looked at on the weekend.
- 20:02Speaker 2: I was like, oh, that is.
- 20:04Speaker 4: That's probably not enough. And that's okay, because we could
- 20:07Speaker 4: increase the amount of cover you have inside superannuation on
- 20:10Speaker 4: your income protection or we could take out a separate policy.
- 20:14Speaker 4: You obviously have a pre existing condition of your back
- 20:16Speaker 4: which they would take into consideration when doing your things.
- 20:20Speaker 4: That doesn't mean you won't get cover. It just means
- 20:22Speaker 4: they might exclude those disks in your back. And then
- 20:26Speaker 4: they would talk to you about TPD, which is total
- 20:28Speaker 4: and Permanent disability insurance, which you may or may not
- 20:31Speaker 4: also hold in super And then they would talk to
- 20:33Speaker 4: you about trauma. And I'm telling you right now, if
- 20:36Speaker 4: you are feeling like you're worried about your parents, you're
- 20:38Speaker 4: worried what happens if something happens to me, This is
- 20:40Speaker 4: going to alleviate that. Like, if something happens to me,
- 20:44Speaker 4: my income is going to get paid. If something really
- 20:47Speaker 4: really bad happens to me, my de facto partner is
- 20:51Speaker 4: not going to be high and dry. They will be
- 20:53Speaker 4: left with more than enough cash to pay off the mortgage,
- 20:55Speaker 4: to live a comfortable life, to do all of those things.
- 20:59Speaker 4: Same with TPDA, you get totally impermanently disabled, there is
- 21:02Speaker 4: going to be a lump sum payment waiting so that
- 21:05Speaker 4: we can set the house up, we can make sure
- 21:07Speaker 4: you get the care that you deserve so that that
- 21:09Speaker 4: burden isn't on your family. And for me particularly, that
- 21:13Speaker 4: takes a lot of stress off me knowing, look, if
- 21:16Speaker 4: something ever happens, like the weight of the world won't
- 21:19Speaker 4: still be on my shoulders. And I think that that
- 21:21Speaker 4: has alleviated a lot. I use a company called sky Wealth.
- 21:24Speaker 4: I probably should give them, like a little shout out.
- 21:26Speaker 4: It's not paid obviously that I use sky Wealth. I'm
- 21:28Speaker 4: good friends with Phil Thompson, and a lot of my
- 21:30Speaker 4: clients when I stopped being a financial adviser went to
- 21:33Speaker 4: him because I sent them that way, or you know,
- 21:35Speaker 4: gave them to feel And the reason was because he
- 21:39Speaker 4: did mine and I trusted him so much, and I
- 21:41Speaker 4: just feel so much more secure. You know, you probably
- 21:44Speaker 4: have car insurance, and if you crush your car tomorrow,
- 21:47Speaker 4: what's going to replace that the insurance? Yes, but your
- 21:50Speaker 4: income you crush your body tomorrow you're not allowed to work. Well,
- 21:54Speaker 4: can't replace that, can't just earn a new body. So
- 21:57Speaker 4: I think that for me not having insurance obviously not great.
- 22:01Speaker 4: You've probably heard me talk about it if you listen
- 22:03Speaker 4: to the podcast. But on top of that, it's just
- 22:05Speaker 4: that mental load. You're like, there's some stuff in the
- 22:09Speaker 4: background that is going to work, and then if anything happened,
- 22:12Speaker 4: then you have the financial advisor there. And also, I mean,
- 22:14Speaker 4: I'm ranting about this, but I'm just wildly passionate about it.
- 22:17Speaker 4: It's not thousands of dollars like his fees are a
- 22:20Speaker 4: couple of hundred bucks, because all he's going to do
- 22:22Speaker 4: is look at your insurances. He's not going to give
- 22:24Speaker 4: you advice in any other area because if he was to,
- 22:27Speaker 4: it would become thousands. But this is like once off
- 22:30Speaker 4: one and done, I'll introduce you, he'll look after you.
- 22:33Speaker 4: I just feel like that's the right thing. All right,
- 22:35Speaker 4: we're going to get back on track. We're going to
- 22:37Speaker 4: or a really quick break on the flip side. I'm
- 22:39Speaker 4: going to ask you a little bit more about the
- 22:40Speaker 4: investments because you said you want to top up your shares,
- 22:43Speaker 4: going to talk about debt? How you feel about that?
- 22:45Speaker 4: I'm pretty sure you're also going to have some good
- 22:47Speaker 4: and some not so good money habits that I want
- 22:49Speaker 4: to share as well. So guys don't go anywhere. All right,
- 22:55Speaker 4: money Diarist, We are back, and this chat has been
- 22:59Speaker 4: I don't know, I'm really enjoying this. I feel like
- 23:00Speaker 4: our community is going to get so much out of
- 23:03Speaker 4: it because one you're sharing a lot, but two we're
- 23:06Speaker 4: talking about lots of different things that we don't often
- 23:08Speaker 4: talk about or money hieries. You mentioned before one of
- 23:11Speaker 4: your goals was bumping up your shares. Does that mean
- 23:14Speaker 4: you already have shares? Talk to me about your investments.
- 23:16Speaker 2: So I invest five hundred and fifty dollars a month,
- 23:19Speaker 2: I'm a goodness, do you know it's like a really
- 23:21Speaker 2: random amount. I did my first investment September twenty twenty four.
- 23:25Speaker 4: What so, she's new, she's new here.
- 23:28Speaker 2: I'm a movie. I kept hearing you say because I've
- 23:30Speaker 2: been listening to your podcasts and I never skip an episode.
- 23:33Speaker 2: I'm up to August twenty twenty three.
- 23:35Speaker 4: Oh my god, there's seven hundred plus episode.
- 23:38Speaker 2: Yes, so it's gonna take me a little while along
- 23:39Speaker 2: of it. That's okay. You say you can have a
- 23:41Speaker 2: time the market just jump in and I was like, okay,
- 23:43Speaker 2: we're going to do it. And then the next time
- 23:44Speaker 2: I was like, okay, this is okay, and I kind
- 23:47Speaker 2: of think about it, like I could easily spend five
- 23:50Speaker 2: hundred dollars on takeaway on the day, so I'm feeling
- 23:53Speaker 2: like extra blue sigoucy with my money. So that's what
- 23:56Speaker 2: I do.
- 23:57Speaker 4: But you're comfortable with that you picked, don't amount you're
- 23:58Speaker 4: comfortable with as opposed to putting our life savings or
- 24:01Speaker 4: something in and that would make me run for the hills.
- 24:03Speaker 2: That's right. I have three thousand, seven hundred in combank
- 24:06Speaker 2: who are you? And three point forty in Pocketbook. I
- 24:10Speaker 2: started with Pocketbook first because I was a little bit nervous.
- 24:14Speaker 4: No, I love this. So talk to me about how
- 24:16Speaker 4: you picked your platform. Like when you were like, oh,
- 24:18Speaker 4: I'm going to invest, you said that you're with comseck.
- 24:21Speaker 4: Why comseeck and what are you buying on comseck?
- 24:23Speaker 2: Okay, So I chose comsek because that's who I was
- 24:26Speaker 2: banking with before I moved to up Bank that also
- 24:29Speaker 2: on your recommendation.
- 24:30Speaker 4: So it's like a colt over here.
- 24:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I've got a couple of bank shares. So I've
- 24:35Speaker 2: got Bendigo Bank, Bank of Queensland. I have Sigma Health
- 24:41Speaker 2: I heard recently, so I was like, done, Dune done.
- 24:45Speaker 2: I've got Transurban, which is they'd do all the tolls
- 24:47Speaker 2: and stuff.
- 24:48Speaker 4: It sounds like you've gone with a portfolio of direct
- 24:50Speaker 4: shares that you're most comfortable with, which I kind of love.
- 24:54Speaker 4: Like obviously, lots of people would say that an ETF
- 24:57Speaker 4: is easier, but given your history and how you've been
- 25:01Speaker 4: feeling about it, I think you know, for example, Transurban,
- 25:04Speaker 4: you've probably justified this in your head and been Actually
- 25:07Speaker 4: people use toll roads every single day and they're relatively expensive,
- 25:10Speaker 4: so that feels like a not so bad investment. And banks.
- 25:13Speaker 4: You probably really like Bendigo Bank and you probably know
- 25:16Speaker 4: that they have an affiligation with up Bank, and you're like,
- 25:17Speaker 4: that looks like it's going somewhere.
- 25:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:19Speaker 4: I feel like I can see how your brain works.
- 25:23Speaker 2: That is exactly why they were my first comsect purchase. Yes,
- 25:28Speaker 2: I was like, okay, we're going to do our first
- 25:30Speaker 2: comsect one, and it has to be bend to going.
- 25:32Speaker 4: I adore that you use the comsect platform to buy
- 25:34Speaker 4: a different bank, So like the irony of that is
- 25:37Speaker 4: not lost any No, that's gorgeous and I kind of
- 25:41Speaker 4: love that you've gone nope and comfortable with this. So
- 25:43Speaker 4: what's the strategy look like moving forward?
- 25:45Speaker 2: Okay? So I have like a watch list and it's
- 25:48Speaker 2: generally only companies that I know about all that kind
- 25:53Speaker 2: of like align with and I do like an EENI
- 25:55Speaker 2: Meeni Mini mole on the month.
- 25:56Speaker 4: Cool love you know what, We've all got a strategy
- 25:59Speaker 4: and five good time in the market. My friend, I
- 26:01Speaker 4: would be a very rich woman, but I cannot.
- 26:03Speaker 2: I try not to worry too much about which one's
- 26:06Speaker 2: the lowest on my watch list. I just kind of like,
- 26:09Speaker 2: all right, we've done bank and I just kind of
- 26:11Speaker 2: cycling through. So I'm just trying to work it up.
- 26:13Speaker 2: My most recent purchase was a Vanguard ETF.
- 26:16Speaker 4: Oh she's into ETFs as well, just the line.
- 26:19Speaker 2: Yeah that's cool, but I was pretty proud of that one.
- 26:21Speaker 4: I can't wait to check in with you in like
- 26:23Speaker 4: twelve months and be like, where's that out? What's going on?
- 26:25Speaker 4: Like five fifty a month. That's big dog energy, Like,
- 26:27Speaker 4: I'm so excited for you. It's just going in the
- 26:31Speaker 4: right direction. Talk to me about debt. Are you in
- 26:34Speaker 4: any debt? What does that look like? And how do
- 26:36Speaker 4: you feel about debt?
- 26:38Speaker 2: Yeah? So I don't have a hex. I didn't do
- 26:40Speaker 2: any tertiary education. I don't have any personal loans, never
- 26:44Speaker 2: had Zippair after pay. I did, for the smallest time,
- 26:47Speaker 2: have a credit card with a three thousand dollar limit
- 26:50Speaker 2: on it. I last us that in December twenty twenty three.
- 26:53Speaker 2: So I signed up for upbank in jan twenty twenty three,
- 26:56Speaker 2: and by December I had stopped using it, and by
- 26:59Speaker 2: May twenty twenty five I had closed it off. I
- 27:01Speaker 2: was like, don't need it. I had set myself up
- 27:04Speaker 2: to scrawl away little amounts, so if something big came up,
- 27:07Speaker 2: I was mainly using it for like say, our yearly
- 27:10Speaker 2: insurance on the house, or my car. I found wanted
- 27:12Speaker 2: to go visit my sister in Brisbane, those sorts of things.
- 27:15Speaker 2: So in terms of debts, the only thing we have
- 27:17Speaker 2: is now home loan. I mentioned. We purchased that for
- 27:20Speaker 2: three hundred and twenty thousand back in two thousand and
- 27:22Speaker 2: eleven and we've got about seventy thousand owing on that.
- 27:25Speaker 4: Oh my god, less than six figures. How does that feel?
- 27:28Speaker 2: Really exciting? The bulk of it is sitting in our offset.
- 27:30Speaker 4: Oh she's got nice financial freedom. That's very sexy.
- 27:34Speaker 2: No, that's my part. I call him my husband, my
- 27:38Speaker 2: de facto or whatever.
- 27:38Speaker 4: The person that you cohabitate with. Yes, iconic, So that's exciting.
- 27:44Speaker 4: What's your property worth now? Obviously having purchased it in
- 27:47Speaker 4: twenty eleven for about three hundred and twenty grand, I
- 27:49Speaker 4: would assume it's increased a little bit, so you might
- 27:52Speaker 4: be sitting on a little bit of equity.
- 27:53Speaker 2: Yeah, probably around threefold.
- 27:55Speaker 4: Oh my god.
- 27:56Speaker 2: Really yeah, we're actually I don't mind giving this away.
- 28:00Speaker 2: You are in Sydney where the new airport is being built.
- 28:03Speaker 2: Yeah okay, so, and the property prices are just insane anyway,
- 28:07Speaker 2: but it has gone up quite significantly.
- 28:09Speaker 4: Yeah, so it's probably setting it around nine hundred two
- 28:12Speaker 4: a million.
- 28:12Speaker 2: Around the nine hundred male.
- 28:13Speaker 4: Yeah okay, And that is really cool, and that is
- 28:16Speaker 4: just how property works over that period of time, Like
- 28:18Speaker 4: that is not surprising. I genuinely was like, I hope
- 28:21Speaker 4: that she answers it this way because otherwise it's going
- 28:23Speaker 4: to be relatively awkward, because that's what I'm in taste
- 28:25Speaker 4: of hating. But what's the plan from here in terms
- 28:28Speaker 4: of creating financial freedom? Like you in your family home
- 28:32Speaker 4: that you're like, all right, well, this is you know
- 28:34Speaker 4: where we want to live forever. We're planning a move like,
- 28:37Speaker 4: talk to me about that.
- 28:38Speaker 2: So I am emotionally very tied to this house.
- 28:42Speaker 4: The one that you told your partner in twenty eleven
- 28:44Speaker 4: was gross.
- 28:44Speaker 2: Yep, that's the one.
- 28:45Speaker 4: Yep. Great.
- 28:46Speaker 2: We've just done a couple of improvements. We've painted some wolves,
- 28:50Speaker 2: We've replaced our kitchen, that sort of stuff. I'm quite
- 28:54Speaker 2: happy being here. It's just a tour of us and
- 28:55Speaker 2: our dog, and it's enough for us. But he would
- 28:57Speaker 2: like something nice I quote unquote nine a little bit
- 29:01Speaker 2: further away, which is fine. I am of a different opinion.
- 29:04Speaker 2: I was like, what do we need a big house
- 29:06Speaker 2: for if it's just the two of us activities. There's
- 29:09Speaker 2: so much room for activities you could get bug beds. Yeah.
- 29:14Speaker 2: If it was up to him, and I'm not totally
- 29:17Speaker 2: opposed to this, we would probably move out a little
- 29:19Speaker 2: bit further west, kind only where my parents are. There's
- 29:21Speaker 2: a lot happening out that way. Potentially lease this house out.
- 29:24Speaker 4: Have you ever sat down with the mortgage broker to
- 29:27Speaker 4: work out what that would look like so that you
- 29:28Speaker 4: feel a little bit more secure, like making decisions? No,
- 29:32Speaker 4: I feel like I've got so many things that I
- 29:33Speaker 4: could help you in this time. I'm like, Okay, can
- 29:36Speaker 4: I just set you down with a mortgage broker? It
- 29:38Speaker 4: doesn't like seeing a mortgage broker does not mean you
- 29:40Speaker 4: have to purchase a property or make a decision, but like,
- 29:42Speaker 4: let me sit you down with somebody who can go,
- 29:44Speaker 4: all right, with this amount of equity, you could purchase
- 29:47Speaker 4: this house. This is what repayments would look like on
- 29:49Speaker 4: a property like this, and this is what situation you've
- 29:51Speaker 4: been and here's what rental yield you'd get probably from
- 29:54Speaker 4: the previous property. So that we could make a little
- 29:56Speaker 4: plan and sit you down and be like, okay, well
- 29:58Speaker 4: that's what property would look like and you go, actually,
- 30:00Speaker 4: I'm not comfortable with that, and then you don't do it,
- 30:03Speaker 4: or you go, oh, I can see the opportunity there,
- 30:07Speaker 4: and now instead of having analysis paralysis, and I understand
- 30:11Speaker 4: that you're currently like going through scarcity mindset. The way
- 30:13Speaker 4: that we get over that is education. The way that
- 30:15Speaker 4: we get over that is giving yourself as much information
- 30:18Speaker 4: and as much power as possible so that making decisions
- 30:21Speaker 4: feels like a no brainer instead of are like, oh,
- 30:23Speaker 4: let me keep all of my dollars over here in
- 30:25Speaker 4: my offset because like right now I'm feeling super secure.
- 30:28Speaker 4: It's actually I'll sit down with a few people, let's
- 30:30Speaker 4: get a few opinions, remembering that you're the one in
- 30:32Speaker 4: the driver's seat. You don't want to do it. We
- 30:34Speaker 4: don't do it. Like nobody's going to force you into
- 30:37Speaker 4: signing a property contract and asking for a section thirty
- 30:40Speaker 4: two promise, Like, but I think that would be especially
- 30:43Speaker 4: in your relationship where one person maybe wants something Like
- 30:46Speaker 4: what happens if you sit down with a broker they
- 30:48Speaker 4: map it all out and say, for this house that
- 30:50Speaker 4: you guys, are you know considering, or even just this
- 30:53Speaker 4: price point. Your partner goes, ah, money dice, You're right,
- 30:56Speaker 4: I don't want to do this, Like I'm actually really happy,
- 30:59Speaker 4: Like you can be on the same page, so let
- 31:02Speaker 4: me set you up with that. But that's so exciting.
- 31:05Speaker 4: I genuinely I just feel like you've got so much
- 31:08Speaker 4: to a cheat. What else? What are the big plans
- 31:10Speaker 4: have you got? You told me about travel, what's that
- 31:13Speaker 4: going to look like in the next few years.
- 31:15Speaker 2: I actually have a countdown on for my fortieth birthday.
- 31:18Speaker 2: I figure, let's time it for that a good six
- 31:21Speaker 2: months off. I don't know what I would do with
- 31:23Speaker 2: my dog. I think that would be really great because
- 31:25Speaker 2: I we've not traveled at all, and I just think
- 31:27Speaker 2: that would be really amazing, especially because we don't plan
- 31:29Speaker 2: to have kids. I'd prefer to do it like now
- 31:32Speaker 2: while we can and able to while way back's okay, yep, absolutely,
- 31:36Speaker 2: But I think the scarcity mindset does stop me from
- 31:41Speaker 2: wanting to kind of like really struggle to part with
- 31:45Speaker 2: the money, even though I have some savings and stuff.
- 31:48Speaker 2: The idea of like even dropping a couple of thousand
- 31:51Speaker 2: dollars on a holiday, I'm like, oh, I don't know
- 31:54Speaker 2: about that, even though I really want to do it.
- 31:56Speaker 2: I was like, I wonder if I could just win
- 31:58Speaker 2: a holiday.
- 31:58Speaker 4: Yeah, okay, well, let's work to works that. I mean,
- 32:00Speaker 4: it's a good.
- 32:01Speaker 2: Plan manifesting that Way's Jessica reach you where we need her?
- 32:04Speaker 4: Yeah, I know, right, I actually just finished recording an
- 32:07Speaker 4: episode about how I think manifestation is bullshit, So that's
- 32:09Speaker 4: probably not going to sit well. But you've got ages.
- 32:11Speaker 4: What did you say you were up to, like twenty
- 32:13Speaker 4: twenty three or something on my podcast? It'll be a
- 32:14Speaker 4: while to get to that, because I genuinely think it's
- 32:17Speaker 4: actually about the hard work that you're doing, not manifesting it,
- 32:19Speaker 4: because if you're looking for it, are you not working
- 32:22Speaker 4: for it? So? Have you created a holiday plan like
- 32:26Speaker 4: or are we just not sure about spending thousands of
- 32:28Speaker 4: dollars on something?
- 32:29Speaker 1: Like?
- 32:29Speaker 4: Have we gone and looked at hotels and what we
- 32:31Speaker 4: do and like, made an aspirational trip.
- 32:34Speaker 2: I've not looked at anything yet. Just this seed planted
- 32:37Speaker 2: in my head that didn't like my fortieth birthday, How
- 32:41Speaker 2: cool would it be if we went and traveled for
- 32:42Speaker 2: six months?
- 32:43Speaker 4: Would be so cool?
- 32:44Speaker 2: It would be so cool. But my partner also doesn't
- 32:46Speaker 2: like to fly, So I figured my one chance is
- 32:48Speaker 2: get him over there once, do it all, and come back,
- 32:52Speaker 2: because if we do a little trip, there's a hard
- 32:54Speaker 2: chance that I'm getting him back on a flight again.
- 32:56Speaker 4: Just get him on the international flight. I like it
- 33:00Speaker 4: so so I wantn't know. I feel like over time
- 33:02Speaker 4: you've probably collected a few good money habits. What do
- 33:05Speaker 4: you think your best is?
- 33:06Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, so I have a couple so shot Back
- 33:09Speaker 2: didn't know about it until the podcast, Adore.
- 33:11Speaker 4: I like that I've I've actually had an impact here,
- 33:14Speaker 4: like this is stroking my ego, like you wouldn't believe.
- 33:16Speaker 4: Thank you for that.
- 33:18Speaker 2: So I I'm up to five hundred and sixty one
- 33:20Speaker 2: dollars in she like shot Back money since May twenty
- 33:22Speaker 2: twenty four isn't a while?
- 33:24Speaker 4: And this free?
- 33:24Speaker 2: Yes, And I don't buy anything that I'm not supposed
- 33:28Speaker 2: to in quotation, but it's mainly like dog food, love
- 33:32Speaker 2: doing the pizza hut.
- 33:33Speaker 4: Shot Back your genius.
- 33:35Speaker 2: I always buy my fuel voucher for seven to eleven
- 33:39Speaker 2: every month, so it's just been accumulating and I'm like
- 33:42Speaker 2: so surprised. Five hundred and sixty one dollars since May
- 33:44Speaker 2: not bad.
- 33:45Speaker 4: That's actually a good deal. And it's free money. And
- 33:48Speaker 4: if you just didn't have the app, you just wouldn't
- 33:49Speaker 4: have made it full stop.
- 33:50Speaker 2: In his story, I tell everyone about it as well.
- 33:53Speaker 4: Oh my gosh, so do I like? I actually feel
- 33:55Speaker 4: like people are like oh yeah, but she's sponsored by them.
- 33:57Speaker 4: I'm like, I'm not right now, I still tell you
- 34:01Speaker 4: it's incredible, Like I will jump up. Why do you
- 34:04Speaker 4: think I was sponsored by them? Because I couldn't stop
- 34:06Speaker 4: be apping about how good they were.
- 34:08Speaker 2: And then I think. My other good money habit is
- 34:11Speaker 2: how I manage my up and how I like tweak
- 34:13Speaker 2: my budget. So I have six everyday savers. It's like
- 34:16Speaker 2: groceries and eating out, transport and fuel, and I have
- 34:19Speaker 2: like my subscriptions internet and phone. I have my Lexi fund,
- 34:23Speaker 2: which is my dog health and medicine, that sort of stuff.
- 34:26Speaker 2: So I have six of those, and then fourteen extra savers.
- 34:29Speaker 4: Fourteen what are you doing?
- 34:31Speaker 2: Okay, it sounds a little bit crazy, but it's really not.
- 34:33Speaker 4: No, it's not crazy if it works.
- 34:35Speaker 2: I actually started doing so every pay I put in
- 34:39Speaker 2: a little bit like a third of what my anticipated
- 34:42Speaker 2: like utilities are going to be, so instead of in
- 34:44Speaker 2: that month's pay having a huge chunk come out, I've
- 34:46Speaker 2: been building on it for the last three months. I
- 34:49Speaker 2: have an emergency fund ticking away. I have the weekly saver.
- 34:53Speaker 2: I don't remember where I saw this, but it's like
- 34:55Speaker 2: week one a dollar Week two two dollars and then
- 34:57Speaker 2: by the end of the year, you've got one thousand
- 34:59Speaker 2: and three hundre from seventy eight. I have family and
- 35:02Speaker 2: gifts that I put one hundred dollars into that every
- 35:05Speaker 2: pay Christmas one hundred dollars of that every pay I
- 35:08Speaker 2: get paid monthly, and then obviously home and car insurance
- 35:11Speaker 2: and then like a discretion it.
- 35:13Speaker 4: Oh my god, I'm loving this. I was going to ask, like,
- 35:15Speaker 4: how did you do your budget? So is this then
- 35:18Speaker 4: on a spreadsheet? And then you've implemented this on up
- 35:20Speaker 4: bank or how have we done this?
- 35:21Speaker 2: Yes? Okay, So I have my beautiful spreadsheet, I have
- 35:25Speaker 2: it mapped out for the entire year, and I have
- 35:28Speaker 2: like all of my fixed expenses, and I tweak it.
- 35:30Speaker 2: The things that will change it is like if I'm
- 35:32Speaker 2: going to have my hair done, but now that I've
- 35:34Speaker 2: got my discretionary fund, it comes out of that. It's
- 35:37Speaker 2: the weekly savor that changes it mildly. So the week
- 35:41Speaker 2: one blah blah blah. And then I go into up
- 35:44Speaker 2: bank and they have a feature pay splitting, and I
- 35:47Speaker 2: go and I tweak that every month just before I
- 35:50Speaker 2: get paid, just tweak it if I need to like,
- 35:53Speaker 2: if I know I'm going to be going out extra
- 35:55Speaker 2: times to eat, I'll put a little bit more in
- 35:58Speaker 2: or that sort of stuff that feature I love so much.
- 36:01Speaker 4: That is so cool. I adore that for you and
- 36:04Speaker 4: that it's working and that you know you're like, hey, queen,
- 36:07Speaker 4: I've got six everyday accounts and then I have fourteen
- 36:09Speaker 4: extra savers. I'm like, sorry, sit down and you. Jesse
- 36:12Speaker 4: got to eat cheek because she does something really similar
- 36:14Speaker 4: al like she's planning for everything and then I've got
- 36:17Speaker 4: my little cash hub system and it works really well
- 36:19Speaker 4: for me. But it's so cool to learn what other
- 36:22Speaker 4: people are doing, because I think a lot of us
- 36:23Speaker 4: ask like, oh, like, what's the best way to budget,
- 36:25Speaker 4: and it's like, there isn't one. There's just one that
- 36:27Speaker 4: really works for you and resonates with you and makes
- 36:30Speaker 4: you feel in control. I'm obsessed. I'm going to give
- 36:33Speaker 4: you actually access to my money masterclass so that you
- 36:36Speaker 4: can have my budget and cash flow system because I
- 36:38Speaker 4: want to see how you go with that and whether
- 36:40Speaker 4: that helps relieve a little bit of anxiety. There's also
- 36:42Speaker 4: a whole heap of mindset videos that I think will
- 36:44Speaker 4: be really helpful, but flipping over. Tell me what's your
- 36:48Speaker 4: worst money habit. Surely you don't have one I do.
- 36:51Speaker 2: It's food.
- 36:52Speaker 4: Ah yeah, okay, what kind of food though.
- 36:54Speaker 2: There's kind of like no limit. I'm not even boushi.
- 36:56Speaker 2: I don't go out for fancy dinners. I am a
- 36:58Speaker 2: take me to McDonald's. The happiest person on this earth. Yeah,
- 37:02Speaker 2: like we love a nugget. We do, we do normally.
- 37:05Speaker 2: I'll call my husband when I'm leaving the city to
- 37:07Speaker 2: lend no I'm coming home and to kind of gauge
- 37:09Speaker 2: what we're going to have for dinner. And it kind
- 37:10Speaker 2: of doesn't even take it word coming out of my
- 37:12Speaker 2: mouth for him to know that I'm angling for takeaway.
- 37:14Speaker 4: Yeah, niconic, that's me. That's me.
- 37:18Speaker 2: So that's pretty bad my food spending.
- 37:21Speaker 4: But does that make you happy?
- 37:22Speaker 2: It doesn't make me really happy.
- 37:23Speaker 4: Okay, So, Le, should we really be changing something when
- 37:26Speaker 4: you just told me hod unless just do a really
- 37:27Speaker 4: quick breakup? Six everyday accounts, fourteen savers. You've started investing
- 37:31Speaker 4: relatively aggressively, like you are not only investing, you're doing
- 37:34Speaker 4: direct shares, and you've just dipped your toes in like
- 37:37Speaker 4: an ETF like Queen, I think that we can do
- 37:39Speaker 4: the food based on your budget.
- 37:41Speaker 2: I just would like to shop a little bit more mindfully,
- 37:44Speaker 2: like my twin sisters with Pole or opposite. She me
- 37:46Speaker 2: your plans every single Sunday and she snapchats her plan
- 37:50Speaker 2: for the week, and she really has takeout. Where of
- 37:53Speaker 2: the convenience life here at our house.
- 37:55Speaker 4: Is your sister by chance to have children?
- 37:56Speaker 2: Yes she does.
- 37:57Speaker 4: Yeah, there you go, there you go. We're living completely
- 38:00Speaker 4: different lives.
- 38:01Speaker 2: Yes, but she's like, doesn't really have takeout, makes everything
- 38:04Speaker 2: at home, and we're like the convenience life chows us.
- 38:07Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah, No, I am with you, like we
- 38:10Speaker 4: cook a lot at home because I organize Marley Spoon.
- 38:13Speaker 4: And I'm so grateful for that because otherwise I wouldn't
- 38:16Speaker 4: be trusted when my husband makes jokes at home, because
- 38:19Speaker 4: obviously if anyone follows me, they know that even with
- 38:22Speaker 4: Marley Spoon, I'm not the one cooking. It's usually my husband.
- 38:25Speaker 4: And if I am, that's novel, and it doesn't mean
- 38:27Speaker 4: I can't cook. It's just in our house that's a
- 38:29Speaker 4: blue job. My husband does the cooking full stop. End
- 38:32Speaker 4: of story. But if it's my night to cook, my
- 38:34Speaker 4: husband will be like, oh, you should cook, and we
- 38:36Speaker 4: both know that doesn't mean cook. We both know that
- 38:39Speaker 4: means using the Uber eatsapp to audit dinner. Like we
- 38:42Speaker 4: both know that he's like, Oh, it's your turn to cook.
- 38:43Speaker 4: What are we having? Like Indian, I'll be like, thank
- 38:46Speaker 4: you for getting me. I regret nothing.
- 38:50Speaker 2: The other bad money habit is I have like this
- 38:53Speaker 2: generosity streak.
- 38:54Speaker 4: Oh no, you're too kind.
- 38:56Speaker 2: I'm too kind, But I think more like wanting to
- 38:59Speaker 2: be like like feeling like I don't know. It's like
- 39:03Speaker 2: something in me that feels like if I buy you
- 39:06Speaker 2: something or I don't know. It's a really hard one
- 39:09Speaker 2: to explain. Yes, I'm really working on that one.
- 39:11Speaker 4: No, I get it. I so get it. And do
- 39:13Speaker 4: you know what. I've come to the conclusion that I
- 39:16Speaker 4: need to reflect on why I'm doing it, but it
- 39:18Speaker 4: doesn't mean it's a bad thing to do it, Like
- 39:20Speaker 4: I need to just make sure that I'm doing it
- 39:22Speaker 4: for the right reasons, like not because i want someone
- 39:24Speaker 4: to like me, but more because I want Like I'm
- 39:27Speaker 4: a gift giver inherently, like I just love giving people
- 39:30Speaker 4: a gift that they adore. Like if I found out
- 39:32Speaker 4: that you loved something and I was able to find
- 39:34Speaker 4: it for you. Oh my goodness, Like that's my favorite.
- 39:37Speaker 4: Like I don't want to just buy you something for
- 39:38Speaker 4: the fun of it, but like if I see something
- 39:40Speaker 4: and I think it's you, I'm going to get it
- 39:42Speaker 4: and that gives me probably more joy than it gives you.
- 39:45Speaker 4: But we just need to keep ourselves in check there
- 39:47Speaker 4: because obviously if it's people pleasing streak, that involves a
- 39:51Speaker 4: lot more conversation with ourselves.
- 39:53Speaker 2: That's what it is. That's the exact word, that's right.
- 39:55Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, Look, I am so impressed with you, Like
- 39:58Speaker 4: I am obsessed with the story we had, how vulnerable
- 40:01Speaker 4: you were, Like learning so much about you, you're investing
- 40:05Speaker 4: your house, like the fact that you're so clear on
- 40:08Speaker 4: what life looks like. You said you're a SI. Though,
- 40:11Speaker 4: talk to me about this person independently of you. You know,
- 40:16Speaker 4: she grew up in a situation where her parents were
- 40:20Speaker 4: so worried about you know, money, parents are working second
- 40:24Speaker 4: cleaning jobs till midnight, and she now earns one hundred
- 40:27Speaker 4: and twenty grand a year and she's killing life. Like
- 40:30Speaker 4: is she a sea?
- 40:31Speaker 2: Maybe more of a bee. There are some things that.
- 40:34Speaker 4: I we can always want to be better, but I
- 40:36Speaker 4: get that.
- 40:36Speaker 2: Yeah, Like a big one on my list is working
- 40:39Speaker 2: out my super, like I know that it's not really
- 40:41Speaker 2: performing at the moment. That's like one of my goals
- 40:44Speaker 2: for the you to move my super across. There's just
- 40:46Speaker 2: like little things that I want to achieve before I
- 40:49Speaker 2: can think that I'm anything more than it'd be.
- 40:50Speaker 4: All right, well, I'll leave you there. I'm not going
- 40:53Speaker 4: to bully you into a higher level, but get your
- 40:56Speaker 4: insurances sorted because then you can change your super without worry.
- 41:00Speaker 4: And right now that seems like a block because obviously
- 41:02Speaker 4: you don't want to lose the insurance inside that super.
- 41:04Speaker 4: And then you're like, well what do I do? Do
- 41:06Speaker 4: I transfer all of it or some of it? Like
- 41:07Speaker 4: what am I rolling over? And you can literally talk
- 41:10Speaker 4: to the fight. They won't be able to give you
- 41:11Speaker 4: super advice, but they'll be able to talk you through
- 41:13Speaker 4: like your decision making process, and that's really helpful. And
- 41:17Speaker 4: I think getting that in place is a really good idea.
- 41:19Speaker 4: And then I think you should be talking to a
- 41:20Speaker 4: broker just to get an idea of what property could
- 41:23Speaker 4: look like, so you and your partner could just be
- 41:24Speaker 4: on the same page about creating a plan or not
- 41:26Speaker 4: creating a plan. Yeah, I've adored this. This is so good.
- 41:29Speaker 4: Thank you for your vulnerability. Thank you for sharing your story.
- 41:31Speaker 4: I just know that the community is going to love
- 41:33Speaker 4: this as much as I have.
- 41:34Speaker 2: Thank you.
