- 0:00SPEAKER_00: So welcome everyone who is here currently.
- 0:04Thank you so much for joining me today for the Sharp Marketing
- 0:08Mastermind for November 2025.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Today, we are going to be talking about 2026 marketing plans.
- 0:23And there's been a lot I've been thinking about over the last
- 0:27two months when it
- 0:28comes to marketing planning and what law firms should focus on
- 0:32in terms of how we
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: should be spending our money,
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: what we should be investing in,
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: what we need,
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: and what can we,
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: the marketers,
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: do to advance the law firm's goals.
- 0:45And I've been thinking a lot about this ping-ponging back and
- 0:49forth from different
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: projects,
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: different
- 0:53marketing emergency so to speak and i've had a few revelations
- 0:59and i'm not going to
- 1:00kind of go into the full story of all of those but i am going
- 1:03to kind of clue you
- 1:05in on how it's guided my thinking in terms of what we should be
- 1:08doing in 2026 to
- 1:12advance the marketing for the law firm overall and get more
- 1:16leads more clients more
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: cases
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: So some quick housekeeping just to start out with.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: So this recap and recording won't be up on Substack until next week.
- 1:28Daniela is my video editor and she's out for a short vacation
- 1:32and she's very dearly
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: missed,
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: trust me.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: So I have a bit of a content backlog.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: And so this is a priority, but it won't be going up until next week.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: So you're going to see this recording and all the resources and an email,
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: I believe by next Tuesday.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: Itched my nose a little bit.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: And after the Zoom meeting, there's no survey for this week.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Oh, no.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: You hear the puppy?
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: Oh, no.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: I was hoping you guys wouldn't.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: He's all the way in the basement.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Oh, my goodness.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the poor thing does not like to be crated, which as is.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: And I might even got my door closed.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: I'm going to have to be talking over this little guy.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: So we're going to have some resources to share.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: They'll be up by next Tuesday.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: No survey after this meeting.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: Survey results for last month were posted in Substack.
- 2:29And I'll probably send out a survey as a poll as part of the
- 2:33Substack article,
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: which is something I can do,
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: which is really cool.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: And let me just make sure chat is open so I can see what's going on.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: And have it appropriately sized in.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: Sorry, guys.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: Here we go.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: So let's get into 2026 marketing plans for law firms.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: So I started working on this way back in early October.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: And at the time or throughout October,
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: it's something I just kept coming back to,
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: but struggled to advance.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: And for me as part of Sharp Cookie and what I do as a fractional CMO,
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: For each of my clients every quarter, we create marketing plans.
- 3:29And these are,
- 3:30the way I describe it to law firms is these are modeled after
- 3:33EOS rocks.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: Think of them as one-time projects we do each quarter.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: And our goal is to complete three,
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: which for me is really realistic if you have,
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: a team of like more than one person on the marketing,
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: yourself and a vendor,
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: yourself and some freelancers.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: can probably accomplish three marketing plans each quarter.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: But as I kept coming back to this,
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: like creating marketing plans and trying to figure out like,
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: what do the attorneys want?
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: You know, what are they looking for?
- 4:06What will make them happy and feel like this is the marketing
- 4:10plan I was looking for?
- 4:12Because like many of you,
- 4:14I was in house marketer for a law firm for a long time.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: And a lot of ways still act as one.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: And so I get, you know, asked the question, like, what are the new ideas?
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: Where are the new things that we can do?
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: And so for me,
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: thinking about like marketing plans,
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: like I'm thinking of,
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: one,
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: what's going to work,
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: what's going to work to bring in the most cases,
- 4:36but also thinking about how do I package it and present it to
- 4:41the attorneys so the
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: attorneys will appreciate it for what it is.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: Because in my experience also,
- 4:49a lot of times lawyers have trouble buying into a marketing
- 4:52idea unless there's a
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: direct through line for how it's going to generate cases,
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: right?
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: And so for a lot of attorneys,
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: if the marketing plan doesn't give them like a clear through line,
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: that clear outcome of this gets us more cases,
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: they're really hesitant.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: Um,
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: and I know talking with some of you and just,
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: talking with marketers on LinkedIn and elsewhere,
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: this is,
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: this is an issue because you know,
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: there are only so many marketing ideas,
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: right.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: There are only so many ways to attract clients.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: We're limited by platform,
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: we're limited by medium,
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: and we're just simply limited by how people find attorneys.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: There are not infinite paths to generate a leader case for a law firm.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: And so, you know, we have to be practical.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: And I attended a few marketing conferences here in the last few months.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: And in 2026, one of my goals is to attend many more.
- 5:56And one of the things that I noticed,
- 6:00oh shoot,
- 6:00let me silence my phone guys.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: It's one of the things I should do for a meeting and just totally forgot.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: So at these conferences,
- 6:13I talked to a lot of marketing vendors and a lot of them are
- 6:17selling marketing
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: programs that in-house team could,
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: could do themselves.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: But we, we still outsource because it's convenient, but,
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: As a lot of you who's had law firms who buy into one of these programs,
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: I'm being vague because it could be anything.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: It could be social media related, SEO related, PPC.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: It could be anything.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: They just buy into like a marketing program or an idea from a vendor.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: a lot of us,
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: know and have the experience of the vendor just kind of falling through.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: Like the campaign didn't work.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: We didn't get a whole lot out of it.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: I shouldn't call it anyone specific,
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: but like I still think about the complete,
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: what was it,
- 7:00plague of crisp videos that so many attorneys filmed like in
- 7:05the early or the late
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: 2000s,
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: early 2000s.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: And,
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 7:10every lawyer I've talked to about the crisp videos who were
- 7:13really excited about
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: the,
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: yeah,
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: who were really excited about those videos,
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: who loved them.
- 7:20Honestly,
- 7:20they were pretty good videos like they were legitimately well
- 7:24produced videos.
- 7:26But every lawyer I talked to who spent all that money to get
- 7:29one bucked up against
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: the same issue,
- 7:31which is what the heck do we do with it like we have this video
- 7:34is on YouTube it's
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: on our website.
- 7:38We track how many people watch it on the website,
- 7:41quite a few,
- 7:41but not many.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: Should we get more people to watch it?
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: Does it help us?
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: So many questions about how to use this one asset that
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: let's be honest,
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: like many of us here could have,
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 7:56found a vendor and put together a production that would have
- 7:59yielded a crisp type
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: video,
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: right?
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: It wasn't revolutionary.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: It wasn't, but it was a good product, a package.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: I don't want to knock it too much, but we've all had that.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: A lot of us have had that experience with those types of videos.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: And so for me, thinking about these marketing plans, thinking about like,
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: what marketing people sell to lawyers.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 8:23it occurred to me that what we should be doing as in-house
- 8:27marketers isn't just
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: implementing a plan.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: Like, here's an idea, we'll implement it.
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: Here's an idea, we'll implement it.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: Because if we do do that,
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: because we can,
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: we kind of exhaust the list of ideas pretty quickly,
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: a list of good ideas,
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: really.
- 8:42And at a certain point,
- 8:44we just hit this roadblock where there's nothing new under the
- 8:47sun.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: There are only so many ways to generate leads for a law firm.
- 8:51How do we grow it from here without just reaching for that next
- 8:56new idea,
- 8:58so to speak?
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: And so for me,
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: and also keep in mind,
- 9:02a lot of the law firms I work for are more or less starting
- 9:06from ground zero.
- 9:07A lot of my new clients have some marketing that they're
- 9:11implementing,
- 9:11but
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: they maybe haven't had an in-house team for a while,
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: or they had somebody who's on their way out of the role.
- 9:22And they just are starting at a level that I feel like a lot of
- 9:27you have probably
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: built up your firms a little bit beyond,
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: right?
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: So keep in mind, like, that's who I'm starting with.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: A lot of firms who just don't have any systems in place.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: And so my primary goal is to help them create those systems.
- 9:43And really,
- 9:45when you think about it,
- 9:46it's the systems that are the most important.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: I was super bad at sports as a kid.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: Surprise, right?
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: The only sport I actually committed to and did was
