Transcript
- 0:08Hey, guys, welcome back. I'm your host, Lex.
- 0:11This is Mom Gone mild. And today is officially the 10th
- 0:16episode. So that means that if you want
- 0:19go back, catch up, binge watch episode one through 9.
- 0:24You know where it's at. And yeah, so we have covered a
- 0:29lot of partying on this podcast, the wild years, the chaos, the
- 0:33stories, postpartum anxiety, depression.
- 0:38But today is a little bit different.
- 0:40Today is another part of me. I really don't talk about this
- 0:45part of me whatsoever. So I don't even talk about this
- 0:50really to my close friends, to be honest.
- 0:52Yeah, but I just want to get untoxic because over and here,
- 0:58like we know we're planning ahead, we're moving forward.
- 1:00We're in this whole era of like soft girl era.
- 1:04And with March coming around, I thought it'd be the best time to
- 1:07start 75 hard and just a Wellness journey.
- 1:11I can't step into this without being honest and telling you
- 1:15guys where I've been. So before you get into this
- 1:19episode, I do want to give a gentle reminder that this
- 1:22episode we'll be talking about eating disorders, addiction and
- 1:25mental health, and postpartum body image.
- 1:28If those topics feel sensitive for you right now, please take
- 1:32care of yourselves and skip this episode if needed.
- 1:35I promise I won't get mad. So let's just get into it.
- 1:40Today I'm sharing my history with bulimia, addiction and a
- 1:43relationship with my body. So all right, let's get into it.
- 1:49I remember being 10 years old in a Weight Watchers meeting.
- 1:53Yeah, 10 years old. I was literally sitting there.
- 1:58I remember we would do like weekly weigh insurance and just
- 2:01like, kind of like give updates throughout, like, you know what
- 2:05we were going through that week. And I remember sitting there and
- 2:08being like, I just feel like this is so off for like a 10
- 2:11year old. I feel like I should be out
- 2:14having fun. I should be out with my friends.
- 2:16But no, I was already so focused on my weight, my body image.
- 2:22And yeah, if you are, if you grew up in the early 2000s, you
- 2:27know that that era was freaking brutal.
- 2:30Skinny was everything. I mean, what was in like low
- 2:35rise jeans, flat stomachs, you know, belly button piercings,
- 2:40basically tabloids that would zoom into celebrities Cellulite.
- 2:43I just remember like skinny was in and if you were anything
- 2:47basically above like 6-8, you were considered fat.
- 2:52Yeah, I know it was definitely that era has.
- 2:56It's just like so different from like what we're in now.
- 3:00It's like everything's about body, like, you know, positivity
- 3:03and just, it's so crazy because coming from the other, you know,
- 3:08time, we didn't have that and we didn't have like this whole
- 3:13basically people accepting how you look and just seeing past,
- 3:17you know, your weight. And yeah, it was hard.
- 3:23It got even harder when I was older.
- 3:25I feel like because I would surround myself with a lot of
- 3:28like, tall, gorgeous girls that were super skinny and was I fat
- 3:33back then? No, I was literally like, I'm
- 3:36going to be honest, I was like a size 8.
- 3:38And but the mess up thing is that back then that was
- 3:42considered fat. So yeah, bulimia became a part
- 3:47of me. It became a way of me kind of
- 3:50taking control back. It's because I can control the
- 3:54amount of food that I would intake and then everything that
- 3:57I would, you know, output. So yeah, if I couldn't control
- 4:01life, I could control food, which was huge to me.
- 4:06That's just the kind of relationship I had.
- 4:09I feel like my family never put like any kind of like, pressure
- 4:15on me. I put it on myself.
- 4:18So let's be clear with that. No one really pressured me.
- 4:20They just, like, always were there for me.
- 4:22And I just remember, like, when I was younger, I was like,
- 4:26counting calories. I was drinking slim fasts and,
- 4:29like, replacing meals. And this was like, sorry to go
- 4:33back and forth, but this was like, roughly, like around 12
- 4:36years old. So I was already doing that back
- 4:39then. And yeah, so as you can probably
- 4:41imagine, it got even worse for me as I became an adult.
- 4:47So I was in cosmetology school back then, Literally, my meals
- 4:51were Coke, iced coffee and cigarettes all the time.
- 4:56I rarely ate. And when I did, it was like a
- 4:59salad, no dressing. And I counted every calorie I
- 5:02put in my body. It was a very toxic
- 5:05relationship. It was lot of back and forth.
- 5:10There was a lot of roller coaster.
- 5:12It just felt like I was always up, always down.
- 5:14Eventually coke became way too expensive, so I ended up, you
- 5:20know, doing worse things, cheaper things.
- 5:23And that's kind of where I started feeling good because I
- 5:31started feeling like, OK, the weights literally coming off
- 5:34because I wasn't eating anything like at all.
- 5:36Like I would have to force myself because I would get like
- 5:39so nauseous and dizzy. And then I started getting a lot
- 5:44of compliments, like you look amazing.
- 5:46You lost so much weight. How did you do it?
- 5:49And I just remember I that how did you do it always scared me
- 5:54because I'm like, I'm not really going to sit here and tell
- 5:57people how I did it. So I would make up this complete
- 5:59crazy lie counting calories, which I did.
- 6:02But it was like staying like, you know, just like on this path
- 6:07of like working out things like that.
- 6:09And yeah, I would go to the gym, but that was more like kind of
- 6:12just to cover up what I was really doing.
- 6:15And yeah, I was really sick. You know, it wasn't discipline,
- 6:18it wasn't confidence. It was absolute self destruction
- 6:23and honestly the hardest part wasn't even the weight loss or
- 6:26like my body image. It was honestly hiding things,
- 6:30hiding things from my loved ones.
- 6:32I was so secretive. You know, addiction makes you
- 6:36lie even when you don't even know you're lying, to be honest.
- 6:42I it makes you disappear emotionally before you
- 6:45physically disappear. I broke a lot of relationships
- 6:48during that time, friends. I had a boyfriend that it really
- 6:53messed with. And then, you know, my husband
- 6:55now, he found out and that was like a whole different thing and
- 7:00it was terrible. But people who genuinely love
- 7:04me, I basically broke all those relationships because I didn't
- 7:10know how to be close to them without telling them the truth
- 7:15about my day-to-day, to be honest.
- 7:17So I kind of pushed them away. And when you're hiding
- 7:20something, you are not present. So it's basically like you are
- 7:25on just automatic on cruise control.
- 7:31I wasn't real. I was performing normal, I was
- 7:35smiling, showing up, working harder than ever.
- 7:38And which is really crazy because I was high functioning.
- 7:42When I say high functioning, it's not like I would show up to
- 7:45work. I'd do myself.
- 7:46No, like I was honors in school. I went above and beyond when I
- 7:51was working and I just like homeless a lot of things.
- 7:55So I think that that was like kind of the worst part because
- 7:59that's why I got away with it for so long, because I wasn't
- 8:03just out partying. I was, you know, taking it
- 8:06literally just to lose weight. So it wasn't like a party drug
- 8:09to me. But yeah, so people never
- 8:12questioned it really. Like I, I think I remember some
- 8:15people like being like, you know, you lost weight pretty
- 8:19quick. But then like, they would see
- 8:21how I'm doing in life and they wouldn't really question it.
- 8:23They were just kind of like, OK, maybe she's stressed or stuff
- 8:26like that, but that's super dangerous because I was obsessed
- 8:32with my next fix. When am I going to get it?
- 8:34How am I going to get it? I went to sketchy places to get
- 8:37it, to pick it up from the sketchiest people.
- 8:40I literally would meet people at hotels.
- 8:44It was just like really bad. I mean, I'm just really glad
- 8:48that like that is done with because it was so scary.
- 8:51Like, you know, you're in this like kind of mentality of like
- 8:55you will do whatever it takes to get that next fix and you don't
- 8:58care. You don't give a shit where you
- 9:01are to get it. Like you can be meeting a
- 9:05straight up serial killer and you're like, ah, you got it.
- 9:07OK, cool. Like I really don't care.
- 9:09Like, that was really scary to me.
- 9:11I like I said, my mind was all over the place, You know, I was
- 9:16constantly calculating, constantly covering my ass, like
- 9:20pretending, just living a double life.
- 9:22And it was so lonely. I wasn't thriving.
- 9:25I was falling apart quietly. I felt like it was like slowly
- 9:31because since I was so highly functional, I wasn't like
- 9:38physically like or like showing people how destructive I was
- 9:41being. But like in my head, I can
- 9:44definitely feel like there was nights where of course I took so
- 9:47much that I would literally be up the entire night and then,
- 9:51you know, I would take stuff Downers to fall asleep And it
- 9:54was just like a endless cycle, endless, endless.
- 9:57So eventually I hit a point where my now husband, he found
- 10:02out and he told me basically that the ultimatum is, you know,
- 10:06you stop, you get help, but yeah, you know, or you continue
- 10:13going, but we're no longer together.
- 10:15And was he my, like, reason to stop?
- 10:19No. But he was a huge part of it.
- 10:22Because I personally feel like recovery shouldn't be based on
- 10:26one person because you never know what's going to happen.
- 10:29And I thought it was. He was a huge part of why I
- 10:33wanted to quit. But definitely I wanted to quit
- 10:37just so I can stop hiding. It was literally like a second
- 10:42job just hiding and lying. And gosh, it was awful.
- 10:48And yeah, so since I got help, I was off everything.
- 10:53And yeah, so my body once again shot up to, like, gaining
- 10:58weight. And this time it was like the
- 11:00heaviest I've ever been. I felt like I hadn't eaten for
- 11:05obviously I hadn't eaten for years.
- 11:06So it just felt like it was catching up to me.
- 11:10And because I didn't just lose the drugs, I lost the identity
- 11:14of being the skinny one. And yeah, I tried so many
- 11:17shortcuts after that. I tried weight loss pills.
- 11:20I tried Ozempic which I've talked about in the past but I
- 11:23have hit a plateau with Ozempic so I'm off of it.
- 11:26I basically tried to do any kind of quick fixes, the cabbage diet
- 11:30and a bunch of just weight loss pills and pills that made you go
- 11:35to the bathroom, pills, just every kind of diet you can think
- 11:38of. I tried, I tried eating, yes, I
- 11:41did try eating healthy. I did try obviously working out.
- 11:45I have gone that route. But with me, it's like I didn't
- 11:48get that instant gratification. So it was really hard for me to
- 11:51continue because I felt like if I wasn't instantly gratified,
- 11:55then I was failing. So my addiction now actually
- 12:01moved from drugs to now food. So it's just like, I feel like
- 12:07it's always like a battle During pregnancy.
- 12:10I didn't feel that at all. Like, during pregnancy, I was
- 12:13fully focused on just being pregnant.
- 12:15I ate healthy. I had my cheat meals.
- 12:17But it wasn't like, I wasn't kind of like, so into, you know,
- 12:24my body image. I was trying to just be as
- 12:27healthy as possible being pregnant.
- 12:29But yeah, postpartum now I feel like postpartum has affected me
- 12:35so much. I never thought I would be like
- 12:39this. I knew that I would have
- 12:40probably some issues because I've already dealt with mental
- 12:43health in the past. I've had issues.
- 12:46So I thought, OK, maybe it'll just be like how it normally is.
- 12:50But honestly, postpartum has hit me so differently.
- 12:55But also, you know, I'm very grateful for this body.
- 12:58It gave me Axel. It gave a safe space for him to
- 13:02grow. It built him, it carried him.
- 13:04It gave me the biggest blessing of my life.
- 13:07I'm super grateful. But it's like I have like a love
- 13:11hate relationship because now even though, OK, so it's like an
- 13:16up and down because after I gave birth, I quickly lost the way, I
- 13:21mean like I like lost 50 lbs right away.
- 13:24And I was like, OK, Dang, I feel good.
- 13:26I feel skinny. But yeah, now six months into
- 13:30it, you know, I'm starting to get that kind of unhealthy
- 13:37relationship with food again. You know, every time I get
- 13:41anxious or things don't go my way, I start eating and yeah, my
- 13:46body is softer, my hormones are all over the place, and my
- 13:52clothes fit differently, which sucks because I actually bought
- 13:54a lot of clothes postpartum because I had lost like 50 lbs.
- 13:57So those clothes don't fit me. And so my confidence is probably
- 14:03at an all time low, but A, we're working on it.
- 14:08And I read somewhere, I don't know if this is true or not, but
- 14:11I feel like it could be. I mean, five years does sound
- 14:14like a lot, but I, I heard that you don't fully regulate until
- 14:18five years after pregnancy. Five years.
- 14:21I think to myself, I'm like, great, I'm only into this six
- 14:23months, but we are literally expected to bounce back in
- 14:29months. And it's like guys in my DM
- 14:31saying that A that my postpartum depression is made-up be that
- 14:38their wives have bounced back from that, which is great
- 14:43applause to you guys, but that's not me.
- 14:45And also, you know that I should be feeling a certain type of
- 14:50way. And I'm going to be honest, I
- 14:53really don't appreciate it. So if anyone in your life is
- 14:56telling you that you should be a certain way, just know that
- 15:00wherever you are in life is fine.
- 15:03You know, if you're trying to better yourself, that's great.
- 15:06But if you're content with where you're at, that's fine too.
- 15:09But yeah, so that's pretty crazy.
- 15:12But, you know, blocked. And I guess, like, now you guys
- 15:18are wondering, like, why am I starting my Wellness journey
- 15:21now? So I'm starting it now because I
- 15:24feel like I'm finally ready to, you know, move forward because I
- 15:29don't want to start something and, you know, know that I can't
- 15:32finish it or I don't have realistic expectations because I
- 15:37know myself, I'll be even more depressed.
- 15:39I'll be even worse than I was before.
- 15:43So we're starting this Wellness journey in March.
- 15:46This is not about getting skinny.
- 15:48This is not about punishing my postpartum body because I love
- 15:52it. This is about discipline without
- 15:55destruction. This is about choosing mental
- 15:57health over self sabotage, which we do a lot.
- 16:01It's about healing my relationship with food, which
- 16:04has been a long time coming. I feel like it's just about
- 16:08healing basically my body. I'm trying to get back that
- 16:12control that I feel like I have lost.
- 16:15And is it going to be a struggle?
- 16:17Absolutely, because I've been struggling with this for so
- 16:20long. But yeah, so if any of this part
- 16:25resonates with you, if you struggle with weight loss
- 16:28throughout your life, whether it's when you were young, when
- 16:32you were an adult, postpartum, anything that has basically
- 16:36changed, depression, things like that, just know that you're not
- 16:40alone. You're not weak, you're not
- 16:42crazy, you are not your body size.
- 16:46Healing is harder than starving, to be honest.
- 16:49Recovery is harder than hiding, but it's worth it.
- 16:54And I feel like I have a lot now, more to live for, like
- 16:58being a Good Wife, being a good mom.
- 17:01So I feel like now I'm ready to kind of tackle all these things
- 17:06that I put behind me. Yeah.
- 17:09So recovery, again, it's hard. It's a struggle.
- 17:12And if you are struggling with it right now, please reach out,
- 17:16get help. You deserve support.
- 17:18You deserve love. You deserve all of it.
- 17:21So March is our reset. We're vlogging the journey.
- 17:26We're starting new classes. I may fail.
- 17:29Actually, most likely I will fail.
- 17:31I have my first Pilates class next week.
- 17:35And yeah, I will probably fall on my ass.
- 17:39But yeah, if you want to have a good laugh, if you want, I don't
- 17:42know, just kind of some motivation.
- 17:44If you want, you know, some accountability, we can hold
- 17:48ourselves to that. So stick around.
- 17:50We're doing daily check insurance, we're building mental
- 17:53strength and we are here for each other because we're going
- 17:57to be doing this together and Mom Got Mild is doing its very
- 18:02first giveaway. Guys, I know it's going to be a
- 18:05good one. I swear these prizes, I have
