Transcript
- 0:02Well, hello everybody, and welcome to another episode of
- 0:05the Modern Yin podcast. I'm Kimberly Roberts of Soulful
- 0:08Yin, and I'm so glad you're here.
- 0:11So if you've watched the last few episodes, especially if you
- 0:14tend to watch video versus audio, you've probably noticed
- 0:17I'm in my pajamas. I don't know, maybe this is
- 0:20going to be a thing of like every time I record, it's going
- 0:23to be a podcast and I'm in my P JS.
- 0:25I don't know. But anyways, I'm rolling with it
- 0:28right now. So welcome to today's episode.
- 0:31I'm really excited about this topic.
- 0:33I want to talk about the survival brain versus the
- 0:36visionary brain, right? So this is something, and I'm
- 0:41going to laugh, I'm going to be totally honest with you here.
- 0:44This is something I wish I had had been explained to me years
- 0:47ago. But you know what?
- 0:49Better late than never, right? So there's a big difference
- 0:53between the survival brain and the visionary brain, right?
- 0:58Or I call it like safety brain versus like the creative brain,
- 1:01right? Because for a long time, I
- 1:04thought I had a strategy problem in my life.
- 1:08I thought I needed a better plan.
- 1:10I needed better discipline. I needed better productivity.
- 1:14But I'll tell you something. This is actually really like,
- 1:17the truth is so much simpler now.
- 1:20It was my nervous system. Yeah, my nervous system was
- 1:25still in survival mode after 25 years in an abusive relationship
- 1:32with an alcoholic that certainly did not, you know, like, leave
- 1:37me in a creative, visionary inspired vibe.
- 1:42Like I was literally, like, looking for danger, like, left,
- 1:45right and center all the time. And then here's the here's
- 1:49another part. When I moved here to this
- 1:51apartment, to this condo here 10 years ago, it's been like 10
- 1:55years since I've been living here.
- 1:58I thought back then, little old naive chicken nugget me thought,
- 2:03well, I'm not in survival mode anymore.
- 2:06I'm free, I have peace, I'm OK because I wasn't in that threat
- 2:13anymore in the relationship. But here's the thing, my nervous
- 2:18system was still very much in survival mode.
- 2:23And I'll tell you something like, I didn't know back then
- 2:26that your nervous system was something that you had to train.
- 2:30So I would tell myself over and over again, I'm safe, I'm OK.
- 2:34And you know what? Like to a certain extent that
- 2:36worked, but not really. And then, you know, I started to
- 2:42realize that I'm in survival brain.
- 2:46And that's so much different than visionary brain because
- 2:49they operate from 2 completely different places.
- 2:54So let's talk about the reality of the survival brain, OK?
- 3:01It's not dramatic. It's not always panic attacks or
- 3:05breakdowns. And I'll be honest with you, for
- 3:09a lot of women, especially women over 40 that are very high
- 3:13functioning, survival brain looks competent.
- 3:18Like just what I was. It was like, while I'm working,
- 3:22I'm showing up, I'm taking care of my clients, I'm taking care
- 3:26of my patients, I'm managing my responsibilities.
- 3:31So from the outside it looked like, well, I'm OK, I'm not in
- 3:36threat anymore. But internally, totally
- 3:41different story, Completely different vibe here.
- 3:47My body was bracing, my nervous system was constantly scanning
- 3:52for the next problem, and my mind was focused on managing
- 3:59risk, right, staying safe instead of imagining
- 4:06possibilities or opportunities. Like the survival brain is the
- 4:12one that's always asking, am I safe?
- 4:16Like that question is constantly running in the background of
- 4:19everything, Am I safe? Am I OK?
- 4:24And the survival brain can feel very much like little small
- 4:34signals that the body gives you, right?
- 4:37Because our body is always communicating with us like
- 4:40247365 S some of the like little you know signals that you're
- 4:46still in survival brain. Your jaw is tight most of the
- 4:51day your shoulders are like slightly lifted even when you're
- 4:57sitting still and your mind it's constantly jumping to problem
- 5:05solving even when nothing is wrong.
- 5:09That's the thing, I had that so often where it'd be like my mind
- 5:15would be scanning and looking for the danger.
- 5:17Oh, where is it? It's like, where's the imaginary
- 5:21bear in front of me always, like all the time, even though there
- 5:30wasn't one there. But I'm all, you know, I'm
- 5:33always preparing for it, preparing for that next e-mail
- 5:39that's just going to set me over the edge.
- 5:42The next bill that like, Oh my God, like am I going to have the
- 5:47money to pay for that the next responsibility or, you know,
- 5:52thing that's being put on my plate that it's like, can I
- 5:55handle it? The next thing that might go
- 5:58wrong, Here's the thing that might might go wrong, not that
- 6:03will go wrong that not that is going to go wrong.
- 6:07It's might because your brain is just always looking for danger.
- 6:14And The thing is, is when you're in that vibe and you're getting
- 6:17all these small little signals, you're actually bracing
- 6:20beautifully, like you are nailing it.
- 6:24And many women, very capable women, because this isn't about
- 6:30like it can't handle life. It's like you're capable, but
- 6:35many capable women are actually living in that state for years
- 6:40and years and decades. So just let that land for a
- 6:48second. Like think about your own life.
- 6:56Now here's the problem with building from a survival mode or
- 7:03survival brain, right? And this is the part that a lot
- 7:06of people miss, myself included, for sure.
- 7:11But when your nervous system is in survival mode and you're
- 7:15constantly bracing, your brain literally has no capacity for
- 7:22vision. No, not happening.
- 7:24You're not wired for creativity in that state.
- 7:28You are wired for production. Production is efficient, but
- 7:34it's not expansive. It's not creative.
- 7:38So you, you know, you might be asking yourself questions like,
- 7:41well, why can't I figure out what I want?
- 7:44Why do I feel so freaking stuck? Why is it that clarity is not
- 7:49landing? Like I used to ask those
- 7:52questions all the time? Like, why can't I make a
- 7:55decision? Like, I would sit in decision
- 7:59paralysis for like days, months, and I'd ask myself over and over
- 8:07again, why isn't this working? Why isn't what I want working?
- 8:12And then I realized, well, maybe the issue isn't strategy.
- 8:17You know, it might just be that my nervous system hasn't felt
- 8:21safe enough to expand. And here's the thing, like, your
- 8:26nervous system is something that you train.
- 8:29Like, think of your biceps, right?
- 8:31Like you look at a set of weights and you're like, you
- 8:35don't just look at them and say, yeah, I have defined biceps.
- 8:41You don't just pick up the weights once and go, yeah, I've
- 8:45got defined biceps exactly the way I want them to.
- 8:48You literally, you got to train them.
- 8:50So you got to pick up the weights again and again and
- 8:55again and again. Doesn't mean you have to pick
- 8:59them up for an hour every single day, but 5 minutes once a day,
- 9:08three times a week, that's training.
- 9:12Your nervous system feels the exact same way.
- 9:18And when your nervous system hasn't felt that safety, hasn't
- 9:21been trained to feel that safety, then it's not going to
- 9:24expand into, you know, like what is possible for me because the
- 9:30visionary brain only comes online when the body stops
- 9:35bracing and how the body stops bracing.
- 9:38We pause and we train the nervous system to feel safe, not
- 9:42by telling it, oh, calm down. Oh, you're safe because that
- 9:47doesn't work. I know.
- 9:49I tried it for years. I used to just tell myself I'm
- 9:52OK, I'm fine or I'm just fine. I'm calm down, I'm relaxed, but
- 10:00the nervous system had a totally different vibe there.
- 10:06So let's spin things around a little bit and let's talk about
- 10:09what the visionary brain actually feels like.
- 10:13OK, so you have some context. You know what the survival brain
- 10:16feels like, right? We're bracing, we can't relax.
- 10:20We're stressed. The visionary brain feels so
- 10:25different, like it's a whole other level, like your breath
- 10:31deepens naturally, You don't have to try and force it.
- 10:36Your thoughts, they slow down. Like instead of like you
- 10:40spiraling like a hamster on a wheel, you actually have time
- 10:44and distance between your thoughts.
- 10:48And here's a really big part. Your mind begins asking
- 10:52different questions instead of like, well, what the heck could
- 10:57go wrong? Or why am I so stuck?
- 11:00You start asking, oh, what's possible for me?
- 11:05Like your visionary brain is curious, it's creative, it's
- 11:11spontaneous, it's patient. Your survival brain is
- 11:17impatient, it's stagnant, and it's just looking to be safe.
- 11:25And when you're in the visionary brain, you can see patterns and
- 11:31possibilities that the survival brain can't.
- 11:35But here's the big thing. It requires something first, OK?
- 11:41Before the visionary brain can even like start to like show its
- 11:44face, it requires that you are safe.
- 11:50Safe in your nervous system. Not telling yourself I'm safe,
- 11:56but literally training your nervous system to feel safe.
- 12:04So the shift is regulate first, then strategize, not the other
- 12:10way around. But I'll tell you the the
- 12:12survival brain will often try and do it the other way.
- 12:16Well, let me just strategize this because if I strategize it,
- 12:19then guess what? Like things will work and then
- 12:21I'll be regulated. No, it doesn't work that way.
- 12:25And I know because I literally tried that for like decades.
- 12:29It just doesn't. This is why modern neon yoga, it
- 12:34focuses on regulation before expansion.
- 12:39It's the stillness that does the real work.
- 12:44Because when the body stops bracing, the brain recognizes
- 12:49and it reorganizes things. The clarity returns.
- 12:53It's like, you know, the light bulb moment over your head.
- 12:56You're like, Oh my God, why didn't I think of that before?
- 12:59That makes so much more sense. That comes from the visionary
- 13:03brain. Your energy stabilizes, right?
- 13:08Ideas start landing again, like. And sometimes it's like you're
- 13:12not even thinking about it. It's just all of a sudden the
- 13:14thought pops up and you're like, I didn't force that.
- 13:17It just happened. Yeah.
- 13:21When you're forcing it, you're in survival.
- 13:25When you're not, when things are just naturally coming up, you
- 13:28get that spark that hit that just lights you up and you're
- 13:31like, whoa, where did that come from?
- 13:34Right? And I know you know what I'm
- 13:36talking about. We've all had those moments
- 13:38where it's like, wow, that was a thought.
- 13:41Where did that come from? And you know what, I want you to
- 13:44notice any time that that happens, notice what you're
- 13:49doing. It's not something that you're
- 13:52doing that's stressing you out. You're not in the middle of a
- 13:55presentation to a marketing company where you know, like
- 13:59you're on the line for millions of dollars.
- 14:01It's usually when you're like, relaxed.
- 14:04Maybe you're out for a walk, maybe you're doing some
- 14:07meditation, some deep breathing, some yin yoga.
- 14:11Maybe you're moving your body right.
- 14:15But in those states, your system finally has the capacity to
- 14:19receive. But the safety has got to come
- 14:23first, then the clarity comes second, and then the momentum
- 14:28comes third. It's not the other way around.
- 14:31Safety, clarity, momentum. Put that on a posted note and
- 14:35put it somewhere where you can see it all the time, right?
- 14:39Safety arrow beside it. Clarity arrow beside it.
- 14:43Momentum. OK, so if this is all landing
- 14:48with you, if you have been feeling stuck, if you've been
- 14:51wondering why the heck aren't things moving forward, pause.
- 14:58Just pause for a minute and I want you to ask yourself this
- 15:02really important question. Am I trying to build vision
- 15:08while my body is still in survival mode?
- 15:10Am I still standing in front of the imaginary bear while I'm
- 15:15trying to think about what do I want for my life?
- 15:21Because I'll tell you something. Let's put this in context for a
- 15:24hot second. OK?
- 15:27Imagine for a minute you were standing in front of a bear, a
- 15:31big black grizzly bear. It's got its little baby Cubs
- 15:36beside it. So that's Mama bear.
- 15:38And she is not happy to see you. And she is feeling your threat
- 15:43even though you're not threatening her, but you are to
- 15:47her because she's got her baby Cubs there.
- 15:49And she's like, no, no, no, you are not going to do anything to
- 15:53me or my babies. So in that hot minute, while you
- 15:58were standing in front of the Mama bear and her babies, can
- 16:01you think about? I wonder what kind of business I
- 16:05want to create. I wonder how, you know, I want
- 16:11to launch a podcast. Oh, you know, I want to know,
- 16:15like, maybe I should start posting on social media.
- 16:20Like maybe I should start this business from my hobby.
- 16:23Are you kidding me? You're not thinking any of that.
- 16:26You are literally thinking how the F am I going to get out of
- 16:29here alive? Right?
- 16:34Yeah. Survival, not creation.
- 16:42So if you're asking yourself, am I trying to build vision while
- 16:46my body is still in survival mode?
- 16:48And the answer is yes. I don't want you to feel like
- 16:52you're behind because I'll tell you something.
- 16:54I felt like I was behind for a long time, and that didn't serve
- 16:58me at all. In fact, it just pulled me back.
- 17:03So I always say, because my dad used to say this to me all the
- 17:06time when I was a kid, and I never really understood what he
- 17:08meant back then, but I do now. He would say, you know what?
- 17:13You do the best that you can with the tools you have in the
- 17:16moment. And it's like, this is this is
- 17:19life, right? Like we do the best that we can
- 17:22with the tools that we have in the moment.
- 17:25So right now you're just building from the wrong nervous
- 17:29system state and tools. And here's the beautiful part.
- 17:34It's something that you can change gently, consistently
- 17:40through regulation. Consistent, and I do mean
- 17:44consistent. Like literally if someone says I
- 17:47don't have time, I'm like, you got 5 minutes a day, you've got
- 17:515 minutes a day, 5 minutes a day, 10 minutes a day, 15
- 17:55minutes a day is better than I'll carve out one hour once a
- 17:58week. So consistency through
- 18:04regulation will bring you safety.
- 18:07And that's the difference between survival brain and
- 18:11visionary brain. It's not discipline, it's
- 18:14safety. When your body feels safe, the
- 18:18vision becomes possible again. AKA the bear and her baby Cubs
- 18:23are no longer standing in front of you, right?
- 18:27That's the work of modern yen yoga.
- 18:31That's where stillness does the real work.
- 18:35And you know, if you're listening to this, you're
- 18:38watching this and you're like, Oh my God, like light bulb
- 18:40moments. This is like really landing for
- 18:42me. Then I'm guiding something so
- 18:45simple inside the Soulful Yin Yoga app starting March 10th.
- 18:49A 14 day unwind and calm March reset series.
- 18:54Nothing intense, there's no pressure, It's just daily
- 18:58practices designed to help you and your nervous system shift
- 19:03out of survival mode and into regulation.
- 19:07And what's really cool about this is that I'll be showing up
- 19:10live in a private community space each day and I'm going to
- 19:14be dropping you like little Nuggets of like, aside from the
- 19:19practices, little Nuggets of like, you know what, this can
- 19:23help you with anxiety today because that's the theme of
- 19:27today's practice. This can help you with, you
- 19:31know, like sleep. This can help you with
- 19:34relaxation. Like I'm actually like so
- 19:38excited for the live components because you know, they might be
- 19:41little audios, they could be like a quick post, it might be a
- 19:45little video that I put up. But every single day I'll be
- 19:49there supporting you. Because here's the thing, when
- 19:52you start doing this work, you're going to want some
- 19:55additional support. And that's what I'm here for.
- 19:59So if your body and your nervous system are like shouting at the
- 20:03rooftop in all the best ways for this kind of support, you're
- 20:07welcome to join us. So thank you so much for
- 20:12pressing play on today's episode.
- 20:14I'm pretty sure that the next one, you'll probably see me in
- 20:17pyjamas again. I don't know, maybe we'll make a
- 20:20trend of this. You can drop a comment if you
- 20:23like. If you'd like to see me post
- 20:24more video here in my PJS. So have a great day and I'll see
- 20:31you in the next episode.
