- 0:58Speaker 3: Today you got me and Denise and we are talking about supplements.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Yay, just so you know.
- 1:06Speaker 1: If you hear a dog in the background, it's my dog and I cannot silence her.
- 1:10Speaker 3: She's a hound, she's not being silenced well, honestly and I don't know if you guys can hear me I am fighting something off.
- 1:17Speaker 3: It's not a great, it's not a great sound, but we're here and we're doing it anyhow and I got my, my hot.
- 1:23Speaker 3: I'm not even gonna call it hot tea.
- 1:25Speaker 3: Um, it's called a fixer elixir and it's amazing, denise is making faces at me.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Um, fixer elixir, fixer elixir, it's fixing me up real good we need to start recording these with video, because we always say, oh Denise made the face at me, or this or that.
- 1:45Speaker 3: It would not be a pretty video right now.
- 1:46Speaker 3: Guys, we haven't showered Literally.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Well, I did brush my teeth and wash my face and did my skincare.
- 1:53Speaker 1: That's as far as I got.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Well, okay, so we wanted to talk supplements.
- 1:59Speaker 3: This is actually the perfect time, because I well, I'm taking supplements right now for fighting stuff off and I made some posts, and it's just something that I've noticed and I'm sure Denise has noticed a lot too is everybody turns to supplements.
- 2:14Speaker 3: It's like we're on this kick of like more is better.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Let me take this.
- 2:19Speaker 3: This is going to help me feel amazing and oh, so-and-so told me I should take this, and I read this thing on Instagram.
- 2:24Speaker 3: This influencer said I need to take that and we're a society that is overdoing supplements, right?
- 2:31Speaker 1: now I completely agree with you and I also believe and correct me if I'm wrong.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Don't you think also and we had talked about it in a previous episode about the Amazon priming your health?
- 2:43Speaker 1: Right, so supplements are faster, right, and then they just we want the results faster, and also, like you said, with the influencers, or all of the supplements that are coming out on the market?
- 2:59Speaker 1: There are just so many.
- 3:02Speaker 2: There are you take what do?
- 3:03Speaker 1: you, I mean, and there's just so many there are you take, what do you, I mean?
- 3:05Speaker 1: And there's just confusing sometimes, like what the heck am I gonna take, or which one is better for me?
- 3:11Speaker 1: Or you know, my friend is taking this and she feels great, but then I'm taking it, but I don't feel great, but why?
- 3:17Speaker 3: yeah, and that's the hard part is I mean there are so many different supplements out there now.
- 3:23Speaker 3: It's unbelievable.
- 3:24Speaker 3: I mean you can get on Pulse Script, amazon, go into a grocery store and then the quality varies, the type varies, the fillers like.
- 3:33Speaker 3: There's so much that goes into it and I feel like a lot of people are taking crappy quality supplements.
- 3:39Speaker 3: So I'm just going to say right now, if you're going to Walgreens, walmart, costco, there is a 99% chance you're taking a lot of fillers, a lot of junk.
- 3:49Speaker 3: It's not serving you.
- 3:50Speaker 3: So sorry, not sorry.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I know, I know you are absolutely right.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Well, the gas station sometimes I think they might have supplements.
- 4:01Speaker 1: I'm going to have to look at the 7-Eleven.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Seriously, I think they might have supplements.
- 4:03Speaker 1: I'm going to have to look at the 7-Eleven Seriously.
- 4:05Speaker 1: I think maybe they might have it.
- 4:07Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 4:07Speaker 1: They might have those caffeine pills, those are supplements?
- 4:10Speaker 3: Yeah, probably Right.
- 4:11Speaker 3: No-transcript, you can't.
- 4:14Speaker 3: One of our instructors always said you can't out supplement a bad diet, which is true, but, like, supplements also aren't healing.
- 4:24Speaker 3: You know what I mean.
- 4:25Speaker 3: They're supplemental and I think people are getting them confused with.
- 4:28Speaker 3: If I just take these things, I'm going to feel good, and I can't tell you how many clients like.
- 4:33Speaker 3: I sent Denise a message the other day, which is what inspired this episode.
- 4:37Speaker 3: But then, even talking to a client yesterday I'm sorry for calling you out, she won't know who she is, Um, but who was like well, what can I take for this?
- 4:44Speaker 3: No, but what?
- 4:45Speaker 3: Which supplement?
- 4:46Speaker 3: And I'm like, but it's not about the supplement.
- 4:48Speaker 3: Yes, there's a time and a place.
- 4:51Speaker 3: Right, I take magnesium every day.
- 4:53Speaker 3: I take a few things, but I know that it's there as supplemental because I'm not consuming enough.
- 4:58Speaker 3: But things, but I know that it's there as supplemental because I'm not consuming enough.
- 5:01Speaker 3: But we've got people who I'm going to call out, some other people I worked with who are on berberine supplements for months which they read online what's great for blood sugar yeah, not supposed to be on a long term, it's also an antimicrobial.
- 5:10Speaker 3: Or people taking oregano oil forever right.
- 5:14Speaker 3: Or high doses of vitamin d, which don't even get me started on that one.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Well, isn't it supposed to be a temp?
- 5:21Speaker 1: Just like the medication, right?
- 5:22Speaker 1: The medication also, it's a temporary fix or thing to help you, to support you.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Right, it's a temporary, but then people end up on the same medication for 25 years and that medication probably stops helping them.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Same thing with the supplements staying on it for so long.
- 5:40Speaker 1: It's not becoming a supplement anymore, it's just becoming part of your identity.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Let's say, right, yeah, and what is the difference?
- 5:49Speaker 1: Kira and this is something that maybe it's a reflection question If you're taking let's say if someone's taking 15 supplements, what is the difference between 15 supplements and 10 or five or six prescription medication?
- 6:02Speaker 1: You're doing the same thing, you are.
- 6:04Speaker 1: And I don't know if you remember when we were going through functional medicine training, our mentor would say you know, as practitioners, she would remind us don't substitute the prescription pad with the supplement link.
- 6:18Speaker 1: And that's what a lot of practitioners have been doing and I have worked with a practitioner.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Before I joined the functional medicine training, I did the health coaching through IIN and I healed myself from a lot of ailments that I had.
- 6:34Speaker 1: But I wanted to get more and I did work with a practitioner from the same school and I ended up.
- 6:39Speaker 1: She ended up giving me so many supplements to the point I couldn't even swallow them and I'm like I can't do this.
- 6:45Speaker 1: And then, when I took the course with um, with our mentor, and I was like wait a minute, this is what practitioners are doing.
- 6:52Speaker 1: They're just sending you the supplement link instead of you know the doctor writing the prescription.
- 6:59Speaker 1: But that's where, yeah, and we're not saying supplements are bad, but we're saying that why supplement something that you can actually, you know, do with nutrition or with emotions, resolving emotions, because sometimes you know, yes, it is deeper than just eating more or whatever.
- 7:20Speaker 3: Yeah, well, and that's the thing.
- 7:21Speaker 3: There's so many different types.
- 7:23Speaker 3: There's vitamins and minerals, you've got herbs, you've got everything in between, and again, there's a time and a place.
- 7:28Speaker 3: Right, our soil is depleted.
- 7:30Speaker 3: We could get into the food supply.
- 7:32Speaker 3: So there are times where people maybe they need a multivitamin, maybe they need magnesium or you know what I mean Something like that Some type of vitamin or mineral, omega-3s, because they don't eat fatty fish.
- 7:41Speaker 3: Okay, that's why it's called supplemental.
- 7:44Speaker 3: You're not consuming enough of that thing, so you're supplementing.
- 7:47Speaker 3: I understand that, especially if you're like well, I'm not going to eat fatty fish, like I can't touch it, okay then.
- 7:53Speaker 3: But then on the other side, we have people that don't understand that everything works together.
- 8:01Speaker 3: So, like, if you're taking I'm going to go back to vitamin D a high dose of vitamin D, because you're like, I read online, it's good for my immune system, and my doctor said my vitamin D is low.
- 8:09Speaker 3: Seriously, we could have a whole conversation on that.
- 8:11Speaker 3: But like, why is your vitamin D low?
- 8:14Speaker 3: Is it because you just are lacking a supplement, or are you not doing the right things?
- 8:21Speaker 3: Is it due to inflammation?
- 8:23Speaker 3: Is it due to glutathione?
- 8:23Speaker 3: Is it due to low magnesium?
- 8:24Speaker 3: Like there's cofactors and people don't get the intricacies of that, and so they take these high dosages of things, even magnesium, right, you and I love magnesium.
- 8:34Speaker 3: It's like a top thing.
- 8:35Speaker 3: But if you're just taking a shit ton of magnesium but you're not paying attention to how much calcium you're consuming, you're throwing stuff off.
- 8:42Speaker 3: And that's what people are doing all day long High dose over here are not paying attention to.
- 8:48Speaker 3: Oh my gosh.
- 8:49Speaker 3: Well, if I take this, it's going to now deplete that, so I've got to replenish that one with more food.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:55Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean it's, it's.
- 8:58Speaker 1: It's something to consider.
- 9:01Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean it's something to consider.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Look at your cabinet and see how many supplements you have.
- 9:06Speaker 1: What are the necessary ones?
- 9:08Speaker 1: Are you taking a lot?
- 9:10Speaker 1: Are you buying them from Costco?
- 9:14Speaker 2: Walmart, etc.
- 9:15Speaker 1: Are you buying high quality ones?
- 9:17Speaker 1: Because it does matter?
- 9:18Speaker 1: It does the quality does matter, you know?
- 9:20Speaker 1: Because if you are taking in the fillers and et cetera, then you're wasting your money.
- 9:25Speaker 1: Yeah, you're wasting your money Exactly because it's not helping you.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Maybe 5% of it is going into your body, but the rest is just like nothing.
- 9:33Speaker 1: So I mean for me, I would always like you say whatever you can get from food and whatever you need to supplement, then supplement.
- 9:52Speaker 1: But I also think that don't just randomly Google or chat GPT supplements, like don't you think like they need to be working with somebody in order to guide them to see which supplements are better for them, for their unique needs, for their unique biology composition, whatever, because we're literally all different?
- 10:12Speaker 3: Yeah, no, I do, because and that's what I'm saying is like there's people that think like, no, I'm making a great choice by supplementing with this, but you're throwing something else out of balance.
- 10:20Speaker 3: If you're supplementing, you should be routinely getting labs.
- 10:23Speaker 3: That's my belief.
- 10:25Speaker 3: You should be making sure that you're not throwing things out of whack.
- 10:28Speaker 3: And then on the amount again, like Denise said, look at what you're taking and know why you're taking it and what it's doing.
- 10:37Speaker 3: If something doesn't make you feel better, why are you taking it?
- 10:41Speaker 3: It's defeating the purpose.
- 10:42Speaker 3: It's one thing if a practitioner is like hey, take these three things, because I've got you on a gut protocol, You're going to be on these for six weeks.
- 10:49Speaker 3: It's another to be like well, I'm on these 15 things and I've been on them the last two years, but I don't feel any better.
- 10:55Speaker 1: Now you're overwhelming the liver, Now you're overwhelming and I remembered something, but I kind of forgot it.
- 11:08Speaker 1: What did Tracy used to say about?
- 11:11Speaker 1: I mean, supplements are still foreign to your body, so your body still has to go through detoxification when you take them, correct, did I remember that correctly?
- 11:21Speaker 3: It depends on what they are.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Yeah, but if you are taking a low quality supplement that has the fillers that have the toxins, right, isn't it just also adding on to the burden of the toxicity?
- 11:32Speaker 3: Well, yeah, let's.
- 11:33Speaker 3: I mean we won't get into how many supplements have heavy metals and whatnot.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Right.
- 11:40Speaker 1: So that's what I'm saying, Like the less supplements you're on, the better, because automatically you're on less toxins, and then I mean you got to see what you need.
- 11:49Speaker 1: Your experiences are different, you know, like we've talked about it, whether in health or in business or something, there's no use in comparing anything to anybody, because you're you are a completely different human being with a different body, different experiences that drove these nutrition to be, that drove whatever you're experiencing right now, you know.
- 12:10Speaker 1: So it's really important to target that as a unique experience, even the supplements, you know.
- 12:17Speaker 3: Yeah, 100%, and that's the thing I mean.
- 12:20Speaker 3: Takeaways today, I would say your big things are go into your supplement cabinet and see if you have a ton in there.
- 12:27Speaker 3: Start weeding through like what.
- 12:30Speaker 3: It's okay, I have a lot in mind too, but part of it is just like an arsenal.
- 12:35Speaker 3: You know what I mean.
- 12:35Speaker 3: Like I've got homeopathic remedies, I've got herbs, I've got tinctures, I've got things for when we don't feel good or different ailments.
- 12:43Speaker 1: Right, that's fine, but you're using them for that phase phase, right, so you have a backup for that phase.
- 12:48Speaker 1: If you're sick, you know, boom, this is what I'm gonna take one, two, three, four.
- 12:52Speaker 1: You know, if we're having this, this is what.
- 12:53Speaker 1: But again, you're going back to, you're taking it temporarily.
- 12:57Speaker 3: Yes, right right now people are gonna ask well, what are you taking when you're sick?
- 13:01Speaker 3: I can tell you, feeling like this, I have an insanely sore throat.
- 13:06Speaker 3: I'm so fatiguedued I'm taking a reginald oil.
- 13:08Speaker 3: Am I going to take these soft gels forever?
- 13:11Speaker 3: No, I'm probably going to take them for three or four days just because they're natural.
- 13:15Speaker 3: It's still an antibiotic.
- 13:18Speaker 1: You know what I mean.
- 13:18Speaker 1: People don't get that.
- 13:19Speaker 3: So I'm taking that.
- 13:21Speaker 3: I'm taking a little extra zinc, but I'm not going to take like COVID.
- 13:24Speaker 3: People took insane amounts of zinc for months on end.
- 13:27Speaker 3: Well, guess how many people have copper imbalance?
- 13:29Speaker 3: now I'm only going to do it for a few days.
- 13:31Speaker 3: So I've got a few things, I do them for a few days and that's it.
- 13:35Speaker 3: So look in your cabinet and see if you've got stuff for certain situations, totally fine.
- 13:40Speaker 3: But if you look in there and you're like, oh man, I'm taking like 13, 14 things every single day, Cut them all out and reintroduce them one by one and see does my body need this?
- 13:52Speaker 3: How do I feel when I take it?
- 13:54Speaker 3: If it's not doing anything for you, stop taking it.
- 13:58Speaker 3: Again.
- 13:59Speaker 3: We're not opposed to supplements.
- 14:00Speaker 3: I do.
- 14:01Speaker 3: I take a few myself every single day Same same yeah.
- 14:04Speaker 3: Yeah, but I know what they're doing and I notice a difference.
- 14:13Speaker 1: And I want to add whether you're working with somebody or you're not, or you're doing whatever, always, always, always, follow your intuition.
- 14:23Speaker 1: So when I was working with somebody, I knew my stuff and I was like, oh, she knows more than me, I'm going to follow.
- 14:26Speaker 1: But then my gut was telling me stop, stop, this is not helping you, this is not helping you, and I knows more than me, I'm going to follow.
- 14:28Speaker 1: But then my gut was telling me stop, stop.
- 14:29Speaker 2: Like this is not helping you.
- 14:30Speaker 1: This is not helping you, and I listened to my gut, I listened to my intuition.
- 14:33Speaker 1: So, even if the practitioner is recommending so many things and you're like wait a minute, but that's no question, you know, express it, advocate for yourself, even if you think, oh, they know more than you would.
- 14:48Speaker 1: To advocate for yourself, even if you think, oh, they know more than you would, I know they do.
- 14:52Speaker 1: However, you also know you more than anybody.
- 14:56Speaker 1: So, definitely, I tell everybody, even my students, when I'm talking to them, when we're doing speech, I always tell them follow your intuition, follow that voice inside.
- 15:01Speaker 1: It always leads you to the right path.
- 15:06Speaker 3: It's true, and I mean I could riff on that for a little bit, but there is an influx of practitioners right now, especially in the functional medicine space, that are doing that.
- 15:15Speaker 3: Like you said, they're just hey we're not writing prescriptions, but we're going to give you all these supplements and I'm like that's not true.
- 15:22Speaker 3: Functional medicine is digging into the root cause and absolutely.
- 15:26Speaker 3: Why not just saying hey, you're deficient in these things.
- 15:29Speaker 1: Based on a thousand dollars worth of testing, I ran here you go, here's your supplements yeah, and again, I mean, I don't want to analyze or anything, but I know that they, the practice practitioners, they want to get results for their clients.
- 15:40Speaker 1: However, um, results for your clients, just like I tell you, it depends on your clients because you're not a magician and you don't have a magic wand, and I feel sometimes they're overly giving the supplement so they can actually let them see the results, have them see the result, but at the end of the day that results only temporary, because you can't not sustain taking 15, 20 supplements every day forever.
- 16:04Speaker 1: And if you are doing that, please look, because there isn't a difference between taking, because I'm always looking at my grandma's little pouch and I'm like, oh my gosh, she carries her pharmacy with her.
- 16:15Speaker 1: But then again, when I, you know, look at the supplement, sometimes like what, like you know?
- 16:20Speaker 1: So don't confuse that and just follow your intuition.
- 16:23Speaker 1: And if you want to work with somebody, work with the right person, and that right person is in front of me.
- 16:30Speaker 3: Not always and I tell people like by all means, book a complimentary call with me, but like I work in such a collaborative way, because we are digging into emotions and stuff too, that it's got to be a right fit.
- 16:42Speaker 3: But I would definitely say, if you're someone that's not just taking like a multivitamin or a couple things that you're like, ah, it's pretty balanced.
- 16:50Speaker 3: If you're taking a bunch of different herbs, a bunch of different vitamins or minerals, you need to be working with someone, you need to be getting labs checked.
- 16:58Speaker 1: yeah, yeah, oh yeah, labs checked absolutely, yeah, yeah I know, I know that we didn't have like a lot of like tips, tips or actionable stuff, but it's a lot of like tips, tips or actionable stuff, but a lot of like reflection, I feel.
- 17:09Speaker 1: And it does tie in with the New Year resolution because right now I feel like you know people, in January they buy all the supplements in the world so they can feel the best Detoxes.
- 17:19Speaker 1: Detox cleanse.
- 17:20Speaker 1: I mean, we used to run them.
- 17:21Speaker 1: It's normal I get it.
- 17:22Speaker 1: But yeah, just a lot of reflection here.
- 17:25Speaker 1: Yeah, just a lot of reflection here, a lot of like digging deep and looking within and seeing.
- 17:30Speaker 1: Is this the life that I want to lead, taking that many supplements or Amazon Prime, my Health, or do I truly want to use them as a supplement, like you said to?
- 17:42Speaker 3: support something for a minute and then I'm done with that.
- 17:43Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I think that's what it is is reflection, because I bet a bunch of people listening to this episode are going to be like, ah crap, that's me.
- 17:50Speaker 3: So something to ponder.
- 17:53Speaker 3: And I mean, as always, guys, our DMs on Instagram are open, so come find us on Pill Yourself Podcast, ask us questions about supplements, share your feedback, let us know what episodes you want to hear, all the things.
