- 0:21I was getting coffee this morning and walking
- 0:25the dogs because it's going to get fucking hot
- 0:27here soon. I was just like chatting with the
- 0:31woman about her lack of AC. And in the middle
- 0:35of the conversation, I'm like, shit, I'm supposed
- 0:37to be on a podcast. I got to go high priority
- 0:42shit. Which is how I'm going to now leave every
- 0:47conversation I don't want to be. Oh, shit. Oh,
- 0:50I'm supposed to be on a podcast right now. Bye.
- 0:53That's right. Actually, that's a pretty good
- 0:54exit line. Yeah. Unless you've used it numerous
- 0:59times and then people are just like, he's very
- 1:02unreliable. That's a very irresponsible person.
- 1:05Like, man, can't count on Sean. Start entering
- 1:10rooms. Is there somewhere you need to be? Yeah.
- 1:12Shouldn't you be on a podcast right now? Fucking
- 1:14generally, there's somewhere I need to be. And
- 1:16I always forget I'm trying to get better about
- 1:20putting stuff on my calendar. Hmm. Do you have
- 1:22a physical calendar? No, I should. Yeah, you
- 1:26might need that. That's like then I get fucking
- 1:28obstinate about it. I just keep writing things
- 1:31on the. It's just you're stuck in March and you
- 1:34just keep writing it on March 5th. Same difference.
- 1:37Yeah, it's March weather. Fives are fives. I
- 1:42fives are fives. I was supposed to put something
- 1:46in my calendar for next week, and then I got
- 1:49tripped up on how we still celebrate Flag Day
- 1:51and forgot what I was doing and then like went
- 1:54like, Oh, what was that thing I put in my calendar?
- 1:56That's right. You were thinking about Flag Day
- 1:58and forgot to write it down. It'd be cool if
- 2:00we could like just bring in some other flags
- 2:02like 2025 is the year of the. I don't know. Tiger
- 2:07flag. And it's just a flag with a tiger on it.
- 2:09And we celebrate that flag for the year. Yeah,
- 2:11it's like, hell yeah. Tiger flag. Tiger flag.
- 2:15And then next year, it's something else. It's
- 2:17like one of the flags from in front of a McDonald's
- 2:21just with the arches and everything. Yeah. Yeah.
- 2:24It's like, oh, cool. Your time to shine. That
- 2:28is a better symbol of American capitalism and
- 2:30American, like, superiority than the current
- 2:32flag. Also, it's unfortunate that Flag Day falls
- 2:35on Trump's birthday, too. So does it? Yeah, no.
- 2:40Yeah, what a bitch. I got to fucking see dogma
- 2:43in the theater last night. Oh, yeah. I haven't
- 2:46seen them in a really long time, but I remember
- 2:49liking it. It's been well, it's been out of print
- 2:52for like over a decade because of fucking Harvey
- 2:55Weinstein. Mm hmm. I think. They finally got
- 2:59the I think the rights finally got like turned
- 3:01over or he let him go because he was holding
- 3:04on to them out of spite for like him and Kevin
- 3:07Smith had a falling out long before all the Weinstein
- 3:10stuff came out. So Weinstein was holding on to
- 3:14it out of spite. It holds up better than I thought
- 3:16it would. I forget how terrible the acting is
- 3:21in a. Yeah, it's not good. You look in any Kevin
- 3:25Smith film. Yeah. Not a priority, but shit golems.
- 3:30Hell yeah. I feel like Clark gets a pass because
- 3:32it's his first film. But it really does set the
- 3:35template of like no one acts. Yeah. But like
- 3:40this is a movie of really good actors and well,
- 3:44I say that it's fucking Chris Rock and Selma
- 3:47Hayek. Those are the really good actors. Those
- 3:49are the two you're pulling out. No, I was going
- 3:52to say it has really good actors thinking of
- 3:53Alan Rickman. Then I thought about the rest of
- 3:55the cast. I'm like, never mind. The movie has
- 3:56Alan Rickman. Those are the only movies with
- 3:58only scenes with chemistry. Yeah. Yeah. I kind
- 4:01of like the Alanis Morissette as God, though.
- 4:04Yeah. She's sort of a charming doofus. Yeah.
- 4:06She doesn't say anything. Yeah, it's perfect.
- 4:09She does say boop. She does say boop. I do appreciate
- 4:13this is now a dogma podcast. That's my last thought
- 4:16on it. I do appreciate the Chekhov's gun of Alan
- 4:19Rickman saying to hear the voice of God, your
- 4:21brain would melt and your heart would explode
- 4:23out of your chest. And that's exactly what happens
- 4:25to Bartleby at the end of the film. Yeah. What
- 4:30I'm saying, it was cool to see on the big screen
- 4:32and holds up better than I thought. That's cool.
- 4:34I think he was considering a sequel to it from
- 4:39something I saw online. After I think they resubmitted
- 4:44this for can or something like that. I don't
- 4:45know. Interesting. I saw headlines didn't read
- 4:50story. I same. Yeah, I have not seen clerks three.
- 4:53I enjoyed clerks two for what it is. I just like
- 4:55those characters. And I was always a fan of the
- 4:57cartoon show. So I'm like, you can do more with
- 4:59these two. But I don't need a heartwarming movie
- 5:02about how Randall has a heart attack and is dying.
- 5:04That's not what I want Randall for. Yeah, not
- 5:07at all. So. Welcome back to cage match. I have
- 5:13not figured out a new intro for whatever the
- 5:15fuck we're doing now. Today, we're discussing
- 5:17fast times at Ridgemont High, and I feel like
- 5:20we should discuss this movie just as much as
- 5:22Nick Cage is in it. So let's keep talking about
- 5:25dogma. It's worth talking about. Yeah. But yeah,
- 5:30it is. It's remarkable how little he's in this.
- 5:32But yeah, we introduce yourselves. Oh, I'm Sean.
- 5:35I'm Nick. And I'm producer Peter. Welcome back,
- 5:39everybody. Season three, baby. Three. OK. Yeah.
- 5:42Four. Three. When? I don't know. Ten. Well, you
- 5:46know, I keep thinking about Daryl on his Defoe
- 5:49podcast. They like break it down in such a strange
- 5:51way. They're on like season 12 and it's like
- 5:55and we're in 2005 for Willem Defoe. It's like,
- 5:58what the fuck? Well, to be fair, that's fucking.
- 6:04British UK style. Yeah. Like they have a different
- 6:07numbering system like they have like their seasons
- 6:09are eight episodes long. Yeah. Fives are still
- 6:11fives, though. So. But yeah, obviously, fast
- 6:15times at Ridgemont High. Yeah. I thought I had
- 6:20not seen this movie before. And then as soon
- 6:22as we started it, I was like, oh, I've seen this
- 6:25entire movie. I know what I'm doing now. And
- 6:29that was a relief. I really like Spicoli. Spicoli
- 6:32makes me laugh. Yeah, his interactions with Mr.
- 6:35Hand. Crack me up. That is absolutely the best,
- 6:39like two part buddy. Yeah, they're the greatest
- 6:42duo. Yeah. So because everything else is sort
- 6:45of just like weird vignette characters that have
- 6:48no arcs for the most part. Sean and we're talking
- 6:50about that. It's like, who is this movie actually
- 6:52about? Yeah, I would assume it's about the girl
- 6:56who? Yeah, Stacey. Yeah. Judge Reinhold's sister.
- 6:59Who just wants to bang. Mm hmm. Played by Jennifer
- 7:03Jason Lee. Mm hmm. Mm hmm. This is one of those
- 7:06movies I missed when I was like the appropriate
- 7:09age to like like this, like I enjoyed the performances.
- 7:13I thought the stories were fine. I didn't dislike
- 7:16the movie. I enjoyed watching it. But the relatability,
- 7:19I feel at 40 completely out the window. Oh, yeah.
- 7:22It's definitely a movie for teenagers. Yeah.
- 7:25So something about a fucking. Teenage sex romp
- 7:31hits different at 40, especially when the primary
- 7:34character is supposed to be 15. Mm hmm. And there
- 7:39is grout. There is like full frontal nudity of
- 7:43an actress who is 19 at the time. And I'm like,
- 7:45this is early uncomfortable. I do not like any
- 7:49of this. Did I sleep through Bush? Like, no.
- 7:52Yeah. OK. So just boobs. Yeah. Full boobal nudity.
- 7:57Yeah, Phoebe Cates and Jennifer Jason Lee boobs.
- 8:00Yeah. Yeah. I'll see you got the names. I yeah,
- 8:04I never get the names. That's just like sweet.
- 8:06There's Stacey and Linda with our character names.
- 8:08Nice. Yeah, I was realizing too that like I had
- 8:11never seen this movie and most of my reference
- 8:14was just the Reinhold clip of like his fantasy,
- 8:18but mostly from The Man Show, which I don't know
- 8:22if you ever saw that episode where they did it.
- 8:24They lampoon it, but it's like. That maybe it's
- 8:27Jimmy Kimmel coming out of the pool, taking off
- 8:29his top and having Corolla's in the bathroom,
- 8:31eating a corndog while watching. Awesome. Yeah.
- 8:35That's about all I remember from the show. Oh,
- 8:38I want to talk about trampolines. There was that
- 8:41there was the guy who could drink beer fast.
- 8:43Yeah, he's dead now. Well, yeah, he probably
- 8:46has esophageal cancer that got him. Well, that's
- 8:50upsetting and a downer. Yeah. I was going to
- 8:53talk about how Judge Reinholdt was whacking up
- 8:55in the toilet, like on his knees in front of
- 8:58it, just whacking one into it. Yeah, good old
- 9:01Judge. Fucking knock. And he wasn't even so put
- 9:06out by it either. Yeah, right. How do we want
- 9:10to break down this movie since it is mostly the
- 9:12yes. Do we each want to take like a character's
- 9:14arc and just like do a quick like run through?
- 9:17No. Are we just giving up the pretense of like
- 9:22discussing what the movies actually happens in
- 9:24the movie? Oh, we could give it a try. Give a
- 9:27quick summary. So it's the final year of some
- 9:31some of these students high school careers. Judge
- 9:36Reinholdt is a senior. He and his girlfriend
- 9:39break up because she just has, you know, so much
- 9:43more life to live, which was a relief to him.
- 9:47Well, he wants to break up with her because she
- 9:49won't put out. Yeah. Which is reasonable. Yeah.
- 9:54Yeah. It's a high schooler movie. Yeah. Yeah.
- 9:59So it's just the story of like the last year.
- 10:02There's one girl who works at OK. So most of
- 10:05these people work at the mall in some form of
- 10:08food or another. One of the servers at the pizza
- 10:12place. Hooks up with an older guy and they bang
- 10:18in the dugout At the point. Yeah, they call it
- 10:22the point weird She just kind of become like
- 10:26that's her association with dating now is just
- 10:29banging. So she becomes a banger a people banger
- 10:33then who else is miss their spicoli he's a Like
- 10:38a stoner surfer kid played by Sean Penn Yeah,
- 10:42he's the best. I love when they enter the restaurant
- 10:45and just take their shirts off and it's like,
- 10:47hey, what's the sign say? No shirt, no shoes,
- 10:53no dice. Oh, that's right. Shirts on boys. I
- 10:58do like I do like it's like I know you had shirts
- 11:00on when you came in here. Yeah. That was fun.
- 11:06So, yeah, he's kind of a dingus and he's. Most
- 11:11of his story is centered around this one class
- 11:14with his history class with Mr. Hand, who's just
- 11:17a very strict kind of guy, which doesn't work
- 11:21with somebody like Spicoli. Judge Reinholdt is
- 11:25going through a series of jobs. Yeah, he gets
- 11:28fired a lot. Yeah. Oh, did you guys look at the
- 11:32IMDb of his boss? His boss, Dennis Taylor, the
- 11:36one who fires him for, you know. Call him the
- 11:39customer piece of shit or whatever. His IMDb
- 11:42profile picture is awesome. Oh, I didn't see
- 11:45it. Oh, perfect. Wow. I believe that's probably
- 11:50from Voyage of the Rock Aliens. That that has
- 11:54big voyage of the Rock Aliens energy. It is weird
- 11:59to see. Oh, my God. That's amazing. Pretty good,
- 12:03right? Is strange to see because this movie.
- 12:07What year did this movie come out? 82. So it
- 12:11is like weird to see there are actors in this
- 12:14film who I'm like, I know that person. It isn't
- 12:17till the credits. I'm like, it's like, holy shit,
- 12:19that's that's a very young Forrest Whitaker.
- 12:21He looks like a fucking giant dude in this. I
- 12:24mean, Forrest Whitaker is is pretty big. He's
- 12:26like 6 '2", but he looks massive by comparison
- 12:29to like, yeah, demone or rat or something like
- 12:33that. Demones a piece of shit. Yeah. Yeah. OK.
- 12:37He's a he's a little snake. But, you know, he
- 12:41did it for the right reasons. No, he didn't.
- 12:46And then immediately. So, yeah, there's the other
- 12:50story of what is it? Mark Rat Ratner and Mike
- 12:54DeMone. Mark works at the mall and has a crush
- 12:58on Stacey and gets all of his advice from his
- 13:04cooler friend, Mark. who everyone fucking knows
- 13:06is a skis bag. Yeah. And like we're introduced
- 13:10to Forest Whitaker's character because Mark's
- 13:12like, hey, man, like just trying to like be like,
- 13:14I'm friends with this guy and guys like, don't
- 13:16fuck with my car. I like how they handled Spicoli
- 13:21fucking up his car. That was clever. Yeah, because
- 13:24they have like the big game against the rival
- 13:26school, Lincoln, which also assassinate Lincoln
- 13:29stickers. Yeah, pretty good. I don't think high
- 13:33school ever lived up to the movies about high
- 13:36school. Which is probably for the best, considering
- 13:40the amount of statutory rape that's in these
- 13:42films. Yeah, that's true. God, you're such a
- 13:45downer. Just let the kids fuck. Like I said,
- 13:50like these movies hit differently at 40. I suppose.
- 13:55Especially when I don't have like, oh, this was
- 13:57a fun movie I used to like. Yeah. I could go
- 13:59back and watch Revenge of the Nerds. It's not
- 14:01cool. Yeah, that one doesn't does not age well.
- 14:04No, those ones are very much in the. We're going
- 14:09to have very questionable. Yeah. Material, but
- 14:12it's lots of boobs and then porkies has a hand
- 14:16job. Oh, yeah. I do like the take on this, like
- 14:20female director. So I do like the like we're
- 14:23going to do the reverse porkies where it's the
- 14:24girls who are like the sex obsessed ones and
- 14:27all the guys are kind of like. Just don't touch
- 14:30my no area. Dorky boys in high school, right?
- 14:34Yeah. Even, you know, Damone is this like slick,
- 14:37cool guy, but he busts a nut in 20 seconds, you
- 14:40know. I love that. It's like, I think I came.
- 14:44Didn't you feel it? I think so. Sure. I think
- 14:48I felt something. Yeah. And then this fun, like
- 14:54awkward teenage comedy comes to a screeching
- 14:56halt when she's like, I'm pregnant. I need an
- 14:59abortion. Yeah. Hey, that's life, baby. But then
- 15:02we get that sweet moment with her and Judge Reinhold
- 15:04and they like bond. Yeah. Get your older brother
- 15:09to drive you to the bowling alley across from
- 15:12the abortion. It's kind of interesting that Amy
- 15:15hasn't really done anything else. You know, I
- 15:17mean, since sorry, she did like clueless, you
- 15:21know, is a notable one. But then there was. Not
- 15:25much else a couple more called loser vamps And
- 15:30that's it Interesting. Is she still alive? She
- 15:33is alive. We should write a letter to her Hey,
- 15:36why aren't you doing she has an upcoming credit
- 15:38for clueless, which you know, I don't know what
- 15:41that actually means Stage revival she did. She
- 15:46was a writer. I'm look who's talking. Oh, there
- 15:48you go. Yeah But not look who's talking to Now,
- 15:53let's find out. That's important right now. All
- 15:58the hot hits. But I thought this was a fun little
- 16:02film. If you, you know. Aren't a prude like one.
- 16:06I just set aside the few scenes with. Yeah, if
- 16:08you're not a prude, if you set those scenes aside
- 16:11and watch the movie without those, it holds up
- 16:14just as well. If you have joy in your heart.
- 16:17Yeah, she did. Right. Look, who's talking to.
- 16:20Okay. Good. But I really like just the the slice
- 16:25of life action. I love the. Sorry, I'm just really
- 16:30into this Judge Reinhold character, too. Yeah,
- 16:32he's a Brad's a lot of fun and all of his jobs
- 16:36just suck. Yeah, he's getting through it. I'm
- 16:40glad nothing ever happened to his car because
- 16:42it starts out and he's like I only got four payments
- 16:44left on this bad boy Yeah, and I was like don't
- 16:50fuck up the car I like when he got fired and
- 16:52then he bangs on the bathroom door and he's like
- 16:54I hope you had a good piss Because he had to
- 16:56replace the guy at the register. Yeah Reinhold
- 16:58has some pretty good lines In terms of a structural
- 17:02arc, he has the best one in the film. I feel
- 17:05like the movie starts off with him on top of
- 17:07the world flipping burgers. He's got a good job
- 17:10on top of the world flipping burgers. He's like
- 17:13a junior manager. Yeah. I mean, that's how he
- 17:16sells it. Right. Yeah. He's like, I got a good
- 17:20job. It's my senior year of high school. You
- 17:23know, I'm going to like, so my wild oats. Mm
- 17:26hmm. And then immediately, he gets fired and
- 17:29he gets fired because a shitty customer like
- 17:32starts fucking yelling at him, calling him names,
- 17:34and he like gets frustrated, stands up for himself,
- 17:37goes through a slew of fucking shitty jobs, including
- 17:40having to dress like a pirate. As a waiter. And
- 17:45at the end of the. Which is also his masturbation
- 17:46outfit later. At the end of the film, he's like,
- 17:51it's his first day being, you know, the night
- 17:54shift at a gas station like. Quick Mart and gets
- 17:59held up. Another rude customer is like yelling
- 18:03at him and stressing him out. And he's, you know,
- 18:06throws coffee on the guy and like saves the day
- 18:09and makes assistant manager. Yeah, I know. When
- 18:13when I got to that point, Rachel had just gotten
- 18:15home and she was like, how much of this movie's
- 18:17left? I was like, I don't know. I think the credits
- 18:18are about to roll. And then it was like, and
- 18:19now Brad has a new job. Like, what the fuck?
- 18:21How much more is in this movie? I was like, oh,
- 18:23still nothing. But yeah. Well, that was the thing.
- 18:26It's like I'm I'm not a huge fan of like the
- 18:29vignette style of film, completely disjointed,
- 18:34like a ray of scenes like the characters were
- 18:38likable, but they're not being a through line,
- 18:41you know, kind of, you know, made it hard for
- 18:43me to maintain interest. And it covers like an
- 18:48entire year, too. So like the time frame isn't
- 18:52like, oh, here's three weeks. It's. Here's an
- 18:55entire school year. Yeah. A little less to connect
- 18:58to things too. Yeah. That way. Unless you're
- 19:01Stacy, then you're connecting all over the place.
- 19:03All over the place. And in the end, she learns
- 19:06that she just wants love and a boyfriend. And
- 19:09she gets with the little theater usher kid. The
- 19:14one who's had a crush on her the whole time.
- 19:16He seems like a nice boy. Yeah, they seemed fine
- 19:19for each other. I did like that he did like the
- 19:21classic, put up your dukes kind of fighting style
- 19:24when he was trying to beat up Mike DeMone. Yeah,
- 19:26his fisticuffs skills were undoubtedly top notch.
- 19:30Yeah. What was your favorite Spicoli bet? I like
- 19:34when he ordered the pizza to the class. Yeah,
- 19:37ordering the pizza in the class was pretty good.
- 19:40That could be that that's probably the best one.
- 19:43I like when he's having that dream also. His
- 19:47little like sex dream. Yeah. Yeah. He was just
- 19:51like a bad ass surfer. And there were like women
- 19:54just throwing themselves at him. It was great.
- 19:57You had a sweet trophy. Yeah. I kind of liked
- 19:59his relationship with his little brother. Yeah.
- 20:02Just like so contentious. I will say I do find
- 20:06it interesting how who got like Sean Penn gets
- 20:10top billing in this film for having a character
- 20:13who has. Practically no association with any
- 20:16other character in the film, except he meets
- 20:18up with Judge Reinhold twice, but they don't
- 20:20really have like an arc or like aren't friends.
- 20:24Like Reinhold comes. Intersect. Yeah. Comes in
- 20:27second. Jennifer Jason Lee, Phoebe Cates after
- 20:29that. But yeah. And like Jennifer Jason Lee is
- 20:34again, arguably who this movie is about. So I
- 20:36just I find it interesting. Like the like the
- 20:38way they broke it down. And then Nicholas Coppola.
- 20:43Yeah. Yeah. I mean, let's talk about that. He's
- 20:47in the background twice. Oh, he's in it four
- 20:51times. Four times. So some of them are just really
- 20:54fast. So like, I think I think I spotted him
- 20:56at the dance. Yeah, he was at the dance. I missed
- 20:58the dance one, but he was at the burger joint
- 21:02or something. Flipping burgers. That's that's
- 21:04the most acting he does like a close up on him
- 21:06for a second. Right. So he's cracking eggs in
- 21:09that that breakfast scene. And then there's the
- 21:13one moment where the customer is being a shit
- 21:15and it shows Brad's bud, Nick Cage and whoever
- 21:19the other guy is. And they're both standing in
- 21:21the window and then they kind of just duck down.
- 21:23That's the acting. Then there's at the football
- 21:27game, too. Yeah. He's cheering in the crowd once.
- 21:30And he's we're first introduced to him when he's
- 21:33at when Judd Reinhold pulls up in the car and
- 21:36there's a line about like four more payments.
- 21:39He's right there as well. Oh, I didn't catch
- 21:41him there. They were all gathered around the
- 21:44parking space. So he makes a woo sound. He makes
- 21:47like five, five times on screen, baby. Something
- 21:51like that. Yeah. But it's cool. I mean, it's
- 21:53interesting that this was where you really made
- 21:55the switch from using his true family name. You
- 21:59know, it's like coasting along on that wasn't
- 22:01working. So switch it up. Appreciate that power
- 22:04man. Power man. But yeah, I mean, like for what
- 22:09it is, I think he did a fine job. Like it's face
- 22:14acting mostly. Yeah, that's right. Have I told
- 22:16the White Power Man story on this podcast? The
- 22:19White Power Man. Yeah. I don't believe you've
- 22:23told the White Power Man story. So Nick Cage
- 22:28character, Nick Cage, Nick Cage's screen name
- 22:31comes from Luke Cage Power Man. Back in my. convention
- 22:35working days. There was this like big fat white
- 22:39guy dressed as like classic like yellow blouse
- 22:42tiara like Luke Cage. Mm hmm. And just from across
- 22:47the room, you hear me yell, look, guys, it's
- 22:49the white power man. And the guy stops in the
- 22:55middle of the convention floor, looks down and
- 22:57is like, just like mortified. What have I done?
- 23:02I have made a critical error. That's incredible.
- 23:06That's the white power man story. Nailed it.
- 23:09Short and sweet. Love it. Just like Nick Cage's
- 23:12performance. Yeah, he never, never milks it or
- 23:16goes too long. Not in this film. No, not a lot
- 23:20of opportunity for him to do much in this. Yeah.
- 23:23Of all the Nicolas Cage films, this was not one
- 23:26of the worst. It's true. Yeah. Which is says
- 23:30a lot. I do kind of appreciate is like the two
- 23:33the two major movies we saw where Nicolas Cage
- 23:36plays second banana was Racing with the Moon
- 23:38and Zandily, which was Sean Penn and. Judge right.
- 23:42Yeah, that's actually kind of funny. I know it's
- 23:45weird. We were reading that Nick Cage book and
- 23:48they were talking about sort of the falling out
- 23:50of Sean Penn and Nick Cage. And I don't know
- 23:52what happened. Yeah. Couldn't sanction his buffoonery.
- 23:57What about falling out of Nick Cage and Judge
- 23:59Reinhold? Yeah. Well, I mean, he did shoot him
- 24:02or whatever. No, he let him drown. Isn't that
- 24:05what happened? Didn't Judge Reinhold drown? In
- 24:08Zonda Lee, I got to need to remember. We watched
- 24:12that. I'm pretty sure he just let himself drown.
- 24:14Yeah, probably. What? God, I always like I go
- 24:18back and watch something from the 80s and it's
- 24:20like starring Judge Reinhold. Mike, really? And
- 24:23you're like, hell, yeah, this is going to be
- 24:24a good movie. Yeah. Handsome, great years. Yeah.
- 24:27But it's one of those things where I'm like,
- 24:29oh, yeah, I forgot Judge Reinhold was a thing.
- 24:31Yeah, he really had a moment. Yeah. And they
- 24:35were all bangers. Except for. Oh, what was it
- 24:39that we looked up? There's some like. No, I think
- 24:41we decided that there were no, no mistakes. Okay.
- 24:44Mistakes that we were not going to look up anything
- 24:45else. Perfect. Another way clerks the animated
- 24:49series before the curve is they did the judge
- 24:54judge Reinhold joke before Arrested Development.
- 24:59Art and media peaked at clerks the animated series.
- 25:04Tell me I'm wrong. He's been in a lot of stuff,
- 25:07but we are just going to stick with the statement
- 25:09that Judge Reinhold has never done a bad movie
- 25:11or piece of media. Yeah, yeah, yeah. He's rocking.
- 25:15He's crushing it. Prove us wrong. Is that our
- 25:18next podcast judging Reinhold? Oh, no. Not a
- 25:22chance. You don't want to watch all of Judge
- 25:25Reinhold's films. I mean, I would watch all of
- 25:28the Beverly Hills cop films. I would watch Zanderle
- 25:32again. Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Fast times again
- 25:37gremlins gremlins or whichever one he's not in
- 25:40gremlins to gremlins Whichever one he's in the
- 25:44first just in gremlins. Yeah, and I know this
- 25:47because of clerks the animated series mm -hmm
- 25:50when Randall is trying to get his $7 back for
- 25:53every bad movie He's went to and he gets Spielberg
- 25:56in there and he's like might I remind the judge
- 25:58he's never been in a Spielberg movie It's like
- 26:00I was in gremlins, but gremlins to I'll allow
- 26:03it Gremlins 2 seems like more of a Judge Reinhold
- 26:08kind of vehicle. You would expect him in there.
- 26:11Yeah. Oh, Gremlins also had Phoebe Cates. I forgot
- 26:14about that. Well, yeah, I don't know what else
- 26:17we had to have to say about this one. I mean,
- 26:19as far as Nick Cage movies go, he was present.
- 26:23He was available in some scenes. Yeah. Yeah,
- 26:26it's great. It's where it all started. When we
- 26:29first when we first were starting this process
- 26:32and we were just coming up with like what it
- 26:34was going to look like. I was talking to Andy
- 26:35about it and he's like, fast times are reaching
- 26:37my best Nick Cage movie. I'm like, it's not the
- 26:40star of that film. I hadn't seen it yet, but
- 26:42I knew he wasn't the star. I knew he's just like
- 26:43a bit player. And now that like in retrospect,
- 26:47I'm like. Has he seen it in the movie? I mean,
- 26:54unless it's like Andy's favorite movie and Nick
- 26:56Cage is also in it. So he's just like, that's
- 26:58the best Nick Cage movie. That's not the only
- 27:01way you could go about it, though. Yeah, I don't
- 27:04know. I think overall, it was, you know, it's
- 27:06a nice weird walk down memory lane for how movies
- 27:09used to be. Yeah. It gave me like big Valley
- 27:13Girl vibes. For sure. I will say this movie is
- 27:17cut. Really? Well, it is a it's like it's the
- 27:21editing is really quick. It doesn't like it doesn't
- 27:23have that thing of like 80s early film where
- 27:26it's like much longer shots and much longer like
- 27:30dead time between scenes. It cuts like a modern
- 27:33film. Yeah, the scenes don't linger for sure.
- 27:36Yeah. I wanted more Mr. Hand, though could have
- 27:39always used more hand more hand job. OK, I really
- 27:45enjoyed last thing I'm going to say, I think
- 27:48when Mr. Hand came to tutor Spicoli in his room
- 27:53and he just like looks around and it's just all
- 27:56the nudie magazine stuff taped up on this wall.
- 28:00And he's just so disappointed. All right. Any
- 28:05final thoughts on fast times at Ridgemont High?
- 28:08If you're watching this movie for Nick Cage,
- 28:10don't. Yeah. But if you're watching it for Judge
- 28:14Reinhold, cool. Yeah. And Spicoli. Yeah. Yeah.
- 28:18Sean Penn and Judge Reinhold crushing it. Yeah.
- 28:23I don't know that we I don't know if the trailer
- 28:25dropped between episodes or between like we'd
- 28:30wrapped up the original run like season two,
- 28:34but I don't know that we've ever discussed the
- 28:36Spider -Man noir trailer. No, we haven't talked
- 28:40about that. I don't think so. I am so excited
- 28:45for how terrible this thing is going to be. I
- 28:47have no hope that this is going to be good. Man,
- 28:49I hope Judge Reinhold plays a Nazi in it. That'd
- 28:52be so good. Or a Nazi sympathizer and then Spider
- 28:57-Man can beat him up. It's going to be a thing.
- 29:01Yeah, I mean, it will exist. I don't know if
- 29:04I have hugely high hopes for. No, I don't. I
- 29:07think it's going to be bad, but I'm here for
- 29:09it. And I'm looking forward. We need to keep
- 29:11this whatever this stick is going to turn into
- 29:14with the cage. We need to keep it going long
- 29:16enough so we can get to and review Spider -Man
- 29:19Noir episodes of noir. Yeah, that's fine. In
- 29:23the realm of like all the Sony Spider -Man movies
- 29:30like. the the new things like the Madame webs
- 29:34and the vampire boy. I don't know why I'm blanking
- 29:38on all of this right now. Yeah. Morbius and Craven
- 29:40and things like that. How do you think it's going
- 29:43to hold up? Like, are you expecting like a venom
- 29:46level bad where it's like bad but enjoyable?
- 29:50Or are you looking for Madame Webb where it's
- 29:53just like unwatchably bad? I never did you watch
- 29:56it? Oh, yeah, I watched it. I waited till It
- 30:00was like on Max or something. But yeah, it is
- 30:03not good. I have not watched any of outside of
- 30:07the Spider -Verse films. I've watched no Sony
- 30:09output for any Spider -Man media. Oh, it sounds
- 30:12like you need. You haven't even watched like
- 30:13the Venom movies. Oh, those ones are actually
- 30:16all right. Yeah, they look fine. I like Tom Hardy,
- 30:19but I'm just like, yeah, I don't care about this
- 30:21character outside of his association with Spider
- 30:24-Man. Yeah. So Madame Webb was just. Terrible.
- 30:29Like the acting was awful. The story was bad.
- 30:33The characters were bad. And it it's just such
- 30:38a train wreck. Definitely worth watching. Sometimes
- 30:42shitty things are worth watching. Yeah. Morbius
- 30:45was bad in a way that's not like hyper entertaining.
- 30:51It's just a bad film and it stars Jared Leto
- 30:55and that's. also bad. I mean, the best thing
- 30:58to come out of Morbius is the Internet trolling
- 31:01Sony to get them to do a second theatrical release.
- 31:04Yeah, it's more been time. Is Craven even out
- 31:09or is that like? I have no clue. I mean, yeah,
- 31:12it came out. It was bad. OK. I mean, I assumed
- 31:16it was bad. That was with the three name guy
- 31:18from fucking kickass, wasn't it? Aaron Taylor
- 31:21Johnson. That's the one. Those are the three.
- 31:24I need to watch Craven and then I'll let you
- 31:27know where I feel it sits. Yeah. I agree. I think
- 31:31Spider Noir is going to be pretty fucking terrible.
- 31:35One second. I saw this article the other day.
- 31:36I didn't read it because I didn't care. But because
- 31:39we're talking about it, Dakota Johnson opens
- 31:40up about the Madam Webmas. Quote, it wasn't my
- 31:43fault. Yeah. Yeah. I would point fingers elsewhere,
- 31:48too, if I were part of that. Yeah. She also like.
- 31:53kind of just shrugged off the, oh, it's a flop.
- 31:57It fucking happens. Like, what am I supposed
- 31:59to do about that? Sometimes shit, shit. Yeah.
- 32:02Sometimes it's shit from a butt, you know. Is
- 32:05that shit from a butt? That is one of my favorite
- 32:09subreddits is that shit from a butt and it's
- 32:11just pictures of food that looks like shit. I
- 32:18love the Internet. Yeah, thank you all for listening.
- 32:20If you are interested in supporting us on Patreon,
- 32:22which seems insane to say at this point, but
- 32:25thank you. Apparently we're going to keep going.
- 32:28Yeah, we're doing this shit. We're going to run
- 32:29through the back catalog. Are we just going in
- 32:30chronological order now? I think so. We're going
- 32:32to figure it out. There are a couple of movies
- 32:33that are like very short performances like this
- 32:36where we have to just sort of decide if we're
- 32:38going to do a few at the same time or if we're
- 32:40going to do movie reviews of movies that he's
- 32:43barely in, you know, so we'll figure it all out.
- 32:47What would be next if we were just going chronologically?
- 32:50Maybe Rumblefish. Yeah, I think we should do
- 32:52that one. That's a that's a Francis Ford Coppola,
- 32:54right? Sure. Yeah. Yeah. Yes, that is. Yeah.
- 32:57Cool. Yeah, we'll do that one. I think and we'll
- 33:00probably try and have a guest for that, too.
- 33:02That's a 7 .1 stars on IMDb. Yeah, I think he's
- 33:06like a medium character in it. So we'll find
- 33:11out. Thank you to our Sparkle buddies, Josh.
- 33:17Wait, it's different. Josh, Josie, Rico, Matt,
- 33:20Adam, Bill and Stewart. And to our cage dancers,
- 33:23Ira, John Freeman, Lance, Nathan and Cameron.
- 33:27Nice. Oh, my God. In a few weeks, we'll get to
- 33:30finally watch the boy in blue. Yeah. Greasy bottom
- 33:33boys. Greasy bottom boys. All right. Good enough.
- 33:44It's our new sign off. Good. Fucking nailed it,
- 33:50boys. Good enough.
