- 0:00It was thirty years of having difficulty orgasming.
- 0:03After seeing fourth best sex therapist over thirty years, found out about cannabis, and I
- 0:09wanted to try it.
- 0:10Oh my gosh.
- 0:11It was shocking.
- 0:12It changed my life.
- 0:19People will tell me, like, she goes, oh yeah, like as soon as I take that gummy, like I can
- 0:23feel arousal.
- 0:24That has been in the research since the seventies.
- 0:27This is not new new information.
- 0:30What's new is actually turning it into policy, making it law.
- 0:35There's research that shows that the THC in cannabis reduces the activity in the amygdala,
- 0:43the part of the brain that stores trauma.
- 0:45Women, for example, who have had trauma, sexual trauma, childhood sexual abuse, which by the
- 0:51way, the number one sexual complaint of women who have had childhood sexual abuse is orgasm
- 0:57difficulty.
- 0:58So so tell
- 0:59us about, like, the research itself.
- 1:00387 validated surveys of women who were using cannabis.
- 1:05They were using it, before sex or not.
- 1:08They but they were using it.
- 1:10Fifty three percent or two hundred and two of them had reported that they had orgasm
- 1:15difficulty before partnered sex.
- 1:18One of the most interesting things in the study, the frequency of use is
- 1:30Hey, everybody.
- 1:31Doctor Diane here.
- 1:32Welcome back to the lounge.
- 1:34I'm so thrilled about the conversation we're gonna have today.
- 1:38I have the best guest, a new friend of mine.
- 1:42We're gonna talk about the research she's been doing, and these studies are blowing my mind,
- 1:46which she sent over to me to take a look at around orgasm and female orgasm difficulty,
- 1:52which is a real legitimate problem.
- 1:54Right?
- 1:54I've seen and I'll be interested as I bring on this next guest to ask her about what she's
- 1:59seeing with the stats because I've personally seen anything as as aggressive as only fifteen
- 2:05percent of women can orgasm by, you know, by penetration alone.
- 2:10And then we have other stats around twenty percent or so of women that have never orgasm.
- 2:15And I've seen stats all over the board, so I'm gonna ask our next guest about what she's seen.
- 2:19But the point here is this is a real big, big issue, and it's a common thing that nobody is
- 2:25talking about.
- 2:26And people are suffering and thinking there's something wrong with them where it's nothing
- 2:30wrong.
- 2:30We just don't have all the tools together.
- 2:33And the research that this guest is going to share with us around cannabis and around the
- 2:39use of cannabis for solving this problem and really helping women have better orgasms or
- 2:45their first orgasm finally after, you know, a lifetime of struggle here, it's just absolutely
- 2:52phenomenal.
- 2:53So doctor Suzanne, thank you so much for coming with me coming here today with me.
- 2:57We're gonna have a great time today.
- 2:59Thank you, doctor Diane.
- 3:00I'm thank you for inviting me on.
- 3:02It's it's really a pleasure.
- 3:03And I would love because we're gonna go into the research and, you know, give people
- 3:07supportive ideas and tools and really hoping help open up people's minds around this, but
- 3:13it's such a unique place.
- 3:15Right?
- 3:15It's such a unique way of solving this problem, meaning, you know, so much talk in the world is
- 3:20around testosterone and HRT and all these things.
- 3:23So I'm really curious, like, what initially, like, inspired you really to go down very, very
- 3:29strongly in this world of research and exploration around cannabis and fee female
- 3:34orgasm disorder?
- 3:36Well, it was thirty years of having difficulty orgasming and, dealing with the shame of that
- 3:43and the feelings of inadequacy, the feelings of isolation, the the having no place to really at
- 3:51that time, I mean, in the eighties, there was we didn't have the Internet.
- 3:55You know?
- 3:55We didn't have Reddit where there's a thread with becoming orgasmic with 30,000, you know,
- 4:00people talking about their orgasm.
- 4:03So, after seeing fourth sex sex therapists over thirty years, I stumbled on or somewhere I
- 4:11found out about cannabis, and I wanted to try it.
- 4:15And, it wasn't even a part of a plan.
- 4:18Like, okay.
- 4:18Let's try it and see if I can, you know, orgasm.
- 4:22It just kind of I had had a I had to learn how to use it, first of all, but we can get into
- 4:28all that.
- 4:28Like, I'm Yes.
- 4:29Pretty much.
- 4:30I'm not want to to surrender, you know, or go into, like, a different state of consciousness.
- 4:36But, anyway, I ended up, you know, orgasming, with a partner to my own surprise.
- 4:43And, I was like, could that have been that?
- 4:46The cannabis?
- 4:47It was it was, like, two and a half hours previous.
- 4:50So we ended up trying and, you know, over time, I could orgasm with or without the cannabis in
- 4:57different ways, and, it changed my life.
- 5:01I mean, I sold my company in 2020.
- 5:04I went back for my PhD.
- 5:07I in 2020, I graduated, last year, did a dissertation.
- 5:12And, anyway, I'll stop there, but that it it definitely, it was life changing, and I know I
- 5:18wanted to see if other women had were suffering from this orgasm difficulty and also finding
- 5:25cannabis beneficial.
- 5:27It's so important.
- 5:28And what I love about your story is is what you said around, hey.
- 5:32Even using this and actually starting down the road of bringing cannabis in, it sounds like
- 5:36you actually found then that sometimes you could after the the induction of Canada
- 5:42cannabis into your play, then afterwards, you're saying that you could sometimes use
- 5:47cannabis or not use cannabis.
- 5:49And either way, you would have an orgasm.
- 5:51So it just kinda opened that world up.
- 5:54And that and that that has been in the research since the seventies.
- 5:58This is this is not new information.
- 6:01What's new is actually turning it into policy, you know, making it law that, for example, the
- 6:09states of Colorado and the states of Illinois have added or female orgasm difficulty as a
- 6:14condition of treatment for medical cannabis.
- 6:17So we've taken the research and actually put it into society, into policy.
- 6:23Yeah.
- 6:23So it it and and why does it you know, why can a woman what they said even in the seventies.
- 6:29You know?
- 6:30It was a book called The Sexual Power of Marijuana by Barbara Lewis who talked about
- 6:35women who once they learned how to orgasm with cannabis, they didn't always need it.
- 6:41Yeah.
- 6:41So I love it.
- 6:43And we have neuroplasticity theory.
- 6:45Yeah.
- 6:45You know, to we have now we know that the human brain, the the adult brain continues to grow
- 6:50and change.
- 6:51We didn't used to think that years ago, but I know that to be true.
- 6:55So it's this new learned behavior.
- 6:59And women in my study, when I, you know, I interviewed them, they they say said similar
- 7:03things, but we can go into that more detail and more in in a little bit as well.
- 7:09Yeah.
- 7:09I definitely want to.
- 7:10And and I'm as you are talking about, you know, kind of the high level of the mechanism of
- 7:16what's happening, I know, like, some of what you found in research is this almost resetting
- 7:22of the amygdala.
- 7:23Right?
- 7:23And you mentioned in your own, you know, in your own story that you felt shame around this
- 7:28not being able to orgasm, which I think is a really common experience.
- 7:32Like, that was my experience before I figured out how to orgasm around, like, what's wrong
- 7:36with me, you know, my broken, you know, that thing of wanting to show up as a woman and feel
- 7:43into your sexual body, but also knowing that it helps partners feel like they're they're able
- 7:50to provide pleasure, and partners wanna do that.
- 7:52And so then there's the shame of letting somebody down and all of that messiness.
- 7:56Yeah.
- 7:56It's a big package.
- 7:58It's a big package.
- 7:59It really is.
- 8:00It's a complicated thing for sure.
- 8:02So so what have you then found?
- 8:04Like like, it's helping the amygdala, like, process trauma better, or it's just kinda
- 8:08settling down those neurological waves?
- 8:10Or what do you think is happening there from, like, the that brain standpoint on them?
- 8:14Great question, Diane.
- 8:15Doctor Diane.
- 8:16That's a great question.
- 8:18So there is, there's research that shows that the THC in cannabis reduces the activity in the
- 8:26amygdala, the part of the brain that stores trauma.
- 8:30And, that research has led to what I call the amygdala reduction theory that was published
- 8:39that basically says that women, for example, who have had trauma, sexual trauma, childhood
- 8:45sexual abuse, which, by the way, the number one sexual complaint of women who have had
- 8:50childhood sexual abuse is orgasm difficulty.
- 8:54So, you know, if we can quiet that part of the mind that is hypervigilant, and it's trying to
- 9:00help us.
- 9:01I mean, it's definitely trying to help us to say, we're not gonna let that ever happen to
- 9:06you again.
- 9:07The the challenge with that in learning how to surrender into orgasm is that as one woman who
- 9:13I interviewed shared, she says, you know, her brain would tell her, you know, you're getting
- 9:18ready to orgasm.
- 9:19I'm noticing that you're going to be orgasming soon.
- 9:21And she would be telling her brain, thank you, but I I I'm really would prefer you know, thank
- 9:26you for that information.
- 9:27And if we could put that aside for now, because that's like spectatoring.
- 9:32You know, that's not being in the body.
- 9:34That's stepping out and saying, okay.
- 9:36Warning.
- 9:37That's not gonna help.
- 9:38And she.
- 9:39So long story short is the the the cannabis, the THC reduces the activity, and that science
- 9:46has shown that in the part of the brain that stores the trauma, which can allow women to to
- 9:53relax the hypervigilance and be in their body.
- 9:56Yeah.
- 9:56And what a great thing for the rest of our day to day life, right, to relax that
- 10:02hypervigilance and all that.
- 10:03It's such a gift in so many ways.
- 10:06It's really, Go ahead.
- 10:08I mean, who you know, it's like I could sigh, you know, just like for the women, for example,
- 10:14in my study, we found who had women with or without orgasm difficulty who had a sexual
- 10:20abuse history, had a more positive statistically significant, more positive orgasm
- 10:26response using cannabis before sex.
- 10:28So it's it's been it's scientifically and this is there's consistency in the research over
- 10:35fifty years, including anecdotal research.
- 10:38So it's exciting to finally, like, be talking about this and
- 10:42Yeah.
- 10:42It really is.
- 10:43Ready for it.
- 10:44And like you said, this this stuff is like it's not new from a standpoint of there's, you know,
- 10:49there's information that is decades old, but being able to have more research and and newer
- 10:55research and being able to get it into policy, it just brings this awareness.
- 10:59And I think for for me as, like, a fundamental scientist, which is what I feel like I am as a
- 11:03doctor, Like, what I've seen in in working with patients is if I can show them the study and
- 11:09the research, then the belief and the ability to to say take that step to try it is so much
- 11:15easier.
- 11:16And so that's a huge part of, I think, what the offering is here too.
- 11:20I'm curious about then so so tell us about, like, the research itself.
- 11:24Like, what I'm curious about is, you know, who is all coming into your study?
- 11:28Because it sounds like some people with trauma.
- 11:30Like, are you working with people that have never had orgasms, that have had orgasms just
- 11:35sometimes or they're not very strong or they can only have orgasm through masturbation and
- 11:40not a partner?
- 11:40Like, what have you seen kind of in all these different areas?
- 11:43Have you worked with these different types of Well,
- 11:45I'll focus on the the research I did for my dissertation that got published in sexual
- 11:50medicine online last year.
- 11:52It's called the assessment.
- 11:54I can send you a link.
- 11:55I have a assessment of the use of cannabis, before partnered sex on women with and without
- 11:59orgasm difficulty.
- 12:01So over a thousand women, replied to the survey, and, we ended up using 387 validated
- 12:09surveys of women who were using cannabis.
- 12:12They were using it, before sex or not.
- 12:15They they were using it.
- 12:17And fifty three percent or two hundred and two of them had orgas had reported that they had
- 12:24orgasm difficulty before partnered sex.
- 12:27So one of the most interesting things in the study were there were there were a number of
- 12:35things, but, you know, realizing that there were some women who thought they had an orgasm
- 12:41problem.
- 12:42But when we looked objectivity objectively at their responses, we've found out that they
- 12:49really didn't.
- 12:50We they got moved to the category where they didn't.
- 12:53Because if they were able to orgasm sometimes or most times without cannabis, they aligned
- 13:01with the women who didn't have an orgasm problem.
- 13:03The women who had an orgasm problem, almost all the largest group of them almost never orgasmed
- 13:09without cannabis.
- 13:11And to my surprise, that same group of women almost always orgasmed with it.
- 13:18So it was it was shocking in to see it.
- 13:21Like, when I had organized the data and realized, like, oh my gosh.
- 13:26Like, this is really, really helping women.
- 13:31And they learned it on their own.
- 13:33Like, there there hasn't really been, a training.
- 13:36Like so, anyway, that's, those were it improved orgasm frequency, orgasm ease, and orgasm
- 13:44satisfaction for women with and without orgasm difficulty.
- 13:48Like, by seventy seven percent of the women for orgasm frequency for women with orgasm
- 13:53difficulty.
- 13:53I think it was seven over seventy percent for improving orgasm satisfaction and sixty seven
- 13:59so over like, somewhere in there.
- 14:01I'm getting my numbers mixed up.
- 14:03But Yeah.
- 14:03It's phenomenal results.
- 14:04It's it's the majority.
- 14:07You know?
- 14:08We're able to, yeah, improve orgasm frequency, ease, and satisfaction.
- 14:12Which is phenomenal.
- 14:13I mean, that just is, like, life changing to so many people.
- 14:16Did you, by any chance
- 14:17I'm curious.
- 14:18Like, did you, by any chance, do anything, like, compare that with, like, masturbation
- 14:22versus partnered sex?
- 14:23Was that, like, a criteria in there that you looked at all?
- 14:26So we only evaluated we we specifically looked at the line of just before partnered sex,
- 14:33because if it was overlapped with masturbation, we'd put number first of all, it was just the
- 14:39number of questions.
- 14:40You know, how many questions were women willing to answer?
- 14:43And, we look specifically at the orgasm subscale questions, frequency ease and
- 14:48satisfaction with and without cannabis before partnered sex.
- 14:51Okay.
- 14:52That was the Because that's the largest group of women.
- 14:55It's called situational.
- 14:57They call it by the diagnostic is just, you know, the the DSM five.
- 15:03It's called situational FOD, situational female orgasm difficulty.
- 15:07Yeah.
- 15:08Which means they can have it in I call it partnered sex difficulty.
- 15:11You know?
- 15:12But it's a difficult situation.
- 15:13More accurate
- 15:14in, like, the reality of what it actually is.
- 15:16And you know what I learned too is is that women who don't have an orgasm problem, they
- 15:21don't orgasm in all ways.
- 15:23Yeah.
- 15:24It's not like, you know, I and that because I think we're we're misled into thinking that,
- 15:29oh, well, she has to orgasm through partner you know, through oral sex, through vaginal
- 15:35intercourse, through clitoral stimulation.
- 15:37You know, like, across the board, she has to orgasm all these different ways in order to
- 15:42count as not having an orgasm.
- 15:45No.
- 15:45Yeah.
- 15:46Yeah.
- 15:46It's really silly.
- 15:47It's really silly, especially when we look at studies that are showing that women and their
- 15:52neurological systems are, you know, are wired differently.
- 15:55And some woman I women I've seen in studies where it's like even the g spot, which we're
- 16:00now calling more the g zone, is almost, like, hardened where there's not as much nervous
- 16:05tissue that goes there.
- 16:06So there's, like, idea of, like, oh, you know, every woman needs to have this g spot orgasm.
- 16:11Well, if their body is anatomically not wired that way, that might be part of part of the
- 16:17issue there.
- 16:18You know?
- 16:18And, I mean, I interviewed a woman, and, actually, she's gone public.
- 16:21She with her with her story, she is the, her name is Rebecca Anderson, and she is the the
- 16:28petitioner for the state of Oregon for adding female orgasm difficulty as a condition of
- 16:33treatment with medical cannabis in that state.
- 16:35Oh, great.
- 16:36And she talked about having had a radical hysterectomy following cervical cancer, whereas
- 16:43her cervix was removed and the upper part of her vagina and other additional reproductive
- 16:48organs.
- 16:49But that you know, from from an orgasm perspective, she lost that's how she orgasmed.
- 16:54And so she then had what they called acquired FOD, which means that she used to be able to
- 17:01orgasm, but she can't any longer.
- 17:02Like, she lost.
- 17:04So we always think of women using having orgasm with clitoral stimulation.
- 17:08Yeah.
- 17:08That's not always the case for every woman.
- 17:11Exactly right.
- 17:11But the but the point was that she started dabbling in cannabis using making cannabis
- 17:17suppositories, and trying different ways to use cannabis and found new ways to orgasm through
- 17:24the use of cannabis.
- 17:26And, so anyway, I found that to be, not just a fascinating story, but a a study had just come
- 17:33out last month out of The UK on women with gynecological cancers who were using cannabis
- 17:40suppositories, just coincidentally.
- 17:41I mean, here was the research.
- 17:43And if they used it with mindfulness, there was a more positive orgasm response.
- 17:48That makes sense to us today.
- 17:49Right?
- 17:50You know, using it with mindfulness.
- 17:52Exactly.
- 17:52Because using it by itself, they said it didn't really work, but using it with, like, they
- 17:56called it mindful compassion.
- 17:57But having mindfulness, intention, I would say.
- 18:02You know?
- 18:03So Well,
- 18:04I think that's what cannabis can do.
- 18:05Right?
- 18:05It can help drop into the body and being more present and stopping those stories, which is
- 18:11part of, like, a large part of mindfulness.
- 18:13And and, you know, the crux of mindfulness is just being present.
- 18:16And and so I see that with cannabis.
- 18:18It's like that's what it's like.
- 18:19You do have to be present.
- 18:20You can't be, like, running around and cleaning your house and think that, you know, you're
- 18:23gonna orgasm most likely.
- 18:25But, you know, from a standpoint of just being in your body, that that makes a lot of sense.
- 18:30Now what about because I know some of the studies are are linking pelvic pain to you
- 18:35know, and helping with pelvic pain.
- 18:36So can we talk about some of those studies?
- 18:38Because I know that's a huge problem for
- 18:40a lot of women.
- 18:41Research now that women who have pelvic pain, chronic pelvic pain, there was a study
- 18:48published in the last few years.
- 18:49I can send you I think we I might have sent you the link to that one in particular.
- 18:54Yeah.
- 18:54Whereas the the the ability to relax the pain and that also goes for vaginismus.
- 19:00I mean, I don't know.
- 19:00I haven't seen a actual study on vaginismus in cannabis use, but just from talking to women
- 19:07that it is it it it's the general real it's the ability to relax.
- 19:13Yeah.
- 19:14But one must also be able in the right in the right mindset, have the right dosage, be with a
- 19:21partner who they feel safe with.
- 19:24Mhmm.
- 19:25You know, and they're in a in an environment that's also safe, meaning their kids aren't
- 19:29gonna get up or come in the room, that they can they can they can relax.
- 19:34So creating the environment, for relaxation so that the pain can dissipate.
- 19:42Let the letting the the medicine do its magic.
- 19:46You know?
- 19:47Like, creating an environment for the medicine to work.
- 19:51So then have you seen in those studies, have you seen that when it comes to pelvic pain,
- 19:55it's really all about, say, that that acute use that people use use the cannabis acutely, and
- 20:01then in that moment, they're less, you know, less in pain and they can enjoy intimacy?
- 20:07Or have you seen that, hey.
- 20:09Like, using regularly over time, we can actually lead to a more, like, permanent
- 20:15reduction in pelvic pain.
- 20:16Have you noted the difference?
- 20:18Great great point.
- 20:19So I'm I can I can share from the sexual dysfunction side versus the pelvic pain side?
- 20:25Sure.
- 20:26But on the CASM, there was a study done in 2020 evaluating the female sexual function index,
- 20:32which is, the five domains of sexual function.
- 20:36You know, arousal, desire, orgasm, pain, and lubrication.
- 20:39And what they found was that women who were using cannabis more frequently were twice as
- 20:48likely to report, like, a reduction in, sexual dysfunction, like, twenty one percent reduction
- 20:57in sexual dysfunction.
- 20:59So the frequency of use is definitely correlated for women to improved sexual
- 21:06functioning.
- 21:08And doctor Becky Lin, she did a study also.
- 21:10She's out of St.
- 21:11Louis.
- 21:11She's one of the few doctors in the entire country, OBGYN, who recommends cannabis, and I
- 21:18think she prescribes it as well for various female sexual issues.
