- 0:16Speaker 2: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money, the podcast
- 0:19Speaker 2: for millennials who want financial freedom. My name is Tony Lodge,
- 0:23Speaker 2: and joining me for another Money Diary is miss Victoria Devine.
- 0:27Speaker 3: Tony Lodge. How are you good? How are you?
- 0:30Speaker 2: I am in such a good mood today, I say,
- 0:33Speaker 2: you know how some days you wake up on the
- 0:34Speaker 2: wrong side of the bed. I have woken up on
- 0:37Speaker 2: the right side of the bed. I mean a great mood.
- 0:39Speaker 2: It's terrible weather outside, but we've both got a cup
- 0:41Speaker 2: of tea and we're ready to go. And I'm just
- 0:43Speaker 2: really really excited about calling our money Diary.
- 0:46Speaker 3: I am too. And you've been hyping this up. You're like,
- 0:48Speaker 3: this is going to be a good one. You're going
- 0:49Speaker 3: to love it. So I want to hear about it.
- 0:51Speaker 3: Read me the email. Let's get straight into it.
- 0:53Speaker 4: Here we go.
- 0:54Speaker 2: I started a business at twenty two. It took off
- 0:57Speaker 2: in under two weeks, and I was so uneducated, naive,
- 1:00Speaker 2: broke and loving the influx of all the money I
- 1:03Speaker 2: was making that technically wasn't mine. You know, taks get
- 1:06Speaker 2: pyg Nope, I didn't know about any of that. I
- 1:10Speaker 2: mean you should, but I was just spending it as
- 1:12Speaker 2: it came in, mostly back into the business, but also
- 1:14Speaker 2: to get myself out of the twenty K debt of
- 1:16Speaker 2: a car Loan, credit cards, holiday debt, crazy ex boyfriend
- 1:20Speaker 2: accounts that got left in my name, and I had
- 1:23Speaker 2: that I had to pay for. In my first year
- 1:25Speaker 2: of trade, I made ninety eight two hundred and fifty
- 1:29Speaker 2: six dollars and seventeen cents on the books, but I
- 1:32Speaker 2: took a lot of it as cash.
- 1:33Speaker 3: Oh my god.
- 1:34Speaker 2: My second year was around seventy thousand something. I wasn't
- 1:38Speaker 2: paying any super or anything. Three years later, after loving
- 1:41Speaker 2: my business and loving the freedom, I thought it best
- 1:43Speaker 2: to see an accountant.
- 1:44Speaker 3: Yeah, good idea.
- 1:46Speaker 2: I owed eighteen thousand dollars to the ATO.
- 1:48Speaker 3: Oh, I mean, that's not as bad as I thought
- 1:50Speaker 3: it could.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Be with literally one thousand dollars in my bank.
- 1:54Speaker 3: Yeah, that's actually as bad as I thought it could be.
- 1:56Speaker 2: I burst into tears and he was amazing. I continued
- 1:59Speaker 2: to trade for another two Two years after seeing him,
- 2:01Speaker 2: I still lived week to week and now I owe
- 2:04Speaker 2: over twenty k to the eighty OO have shut my
- 2:06Speaker 2: business moved into state whilst putting current debts on hold,
- 2:09Speaker 2: paying four hundred and ninety dollars a week rent in
- 2:11Speaker 2: two different states. And I'm writing this now with literally
- 2:13Speaker 2: fifty dollars in my account. Here, I am twenty seven
- 2:17Speaker 2: zero savings, zero investments, and fifty dollars. But I'm not
- 2:21Speaker 2: scared because better things must be coming.
- 2:23Speaker 3: They must be. Let's get her on the phone. I
- 2:25Speaker 3: want to have a chat. Well here already, we've already
- 2:27Speaker 3: been talking about it, this money.
- 2:28Speaker 4: Direst to I. We're a vibe together.
- 2:31Speaker 3: We both love dogs. Yep, she has a two hour
- 2:34Speaker 3: if a Buck's in the background. I'm forgive us. I'm
- 2:37Speaker 3: probably not going to get you to edit it out
- 2:39Speaker 3: because it's a vibe.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Well, thank you so much for joining us Money Diros.
- 2:43Speaker 2: It's lovely to have you.
- 2:45Speaker 5: I'm so gxcited to be here. Thank you.
- 2:47Speaker 3: Honestly, I'm so impressed that you've got this story and
- 2:50Speaker 3: it's not you know, obviously it's not a super positive one,
- 2:53Speaker 3: but more often than not, on She's on the money,
- 2:55Speaker 3: we you know, kind of get the stories after people
- 2:58Speaker 3: have refound their feet, right, Yeah, and.
- 3:01Speaker 2: That's why I kind of really when I read the
- 3:04Speaker 2: email from our money diarist. I thought, I like the
- 3:07Speaker 2: idea of giving someone the opportunity to share their story
- 3:11Speaker 2: when it's not the best part yet, and you know
- 3:15Speaker 2: there's going to be a lot of people. We were
- 3:17Speaker 2: actually talking in the office yesterday about a posts in
- 3:21Speaker 2: our Facebook group, someone saying, you know.
- 3:24Speaker 4: There's a lot of people in this group really.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Killing it and doing a great job, but is anybody struggling?
- 3:29Speaker 2: And it has so many comments and so much interaction
- 3:32Speaker 2: because often, and it's the same with social media and everything,
- 3:35Speaker 2: people share the best parts of their lives and you
- 3:38Speaker 2: don't actually see.
- 3:38Speaker 4: The the you know, the crappy parts.
- 3:41Speaker 3: So I thought this would be a.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Great opportunity to share a story of someone that's just
- 3:45Speaker 2: like at the beginning of their journey.
- 3:47Speaker 3: You're on the road to success. Though you're on a journey,
- 3:50Speaker 3: you've been there before and there's no reason why you
- 3:53Speaker 3: can't get back there again. So I have so many questions.
- 3:56Speaker 3: I want to have a good job, but as always,
- 3:59Speaker 3: we have the structured questions at the start. Are you
- 4:02Speaker 3: ready for them?
- 4:04Speaker 5: Yes?
- 4:05Speaker 3: All right? First question is what is your attitude towards money?
- 4:10Speaker 5: I think my attitude's pretty it's really bad. I feel
- 4:13Speaker 5: like it's really influenced by who I'm around or what
- 4:16Speaker 5: I'm currently doing. It's weird. I haven't actually really found
- 4:21Speaker 5: a positive kind of attitude or outlook on it. I
- 4:25Speaker 5: feel like I'm getting there now. But I always kind
- 4:28Speaker 5: of had this attitude like, oh, don't worry, it can
- 4:31Speaker 5: be remade, or money will always find me, which it
- 4:34Speaker 5: generally always does. Sometimes it all ends up working out
- 4:39Speaker 5: for me. So I've always just kind of gone with that.
- 4:41Speaker 5: But yeah, I think it's time to change that attitude
- 4:44Speaker 5: because I don't think it's very sustainable.
- 4:47Speaker 3: I don't feel like it's serving you anymore.
- 4:50Speaker 5: No, definitely not like especially when you stop having like
- 4:55Speaker 5: an influx of money, but like literally now, like I
- 4:57Speaker 5: can't find any. So we're just going to show that
- 5:00Speaker 5: it can't always be remade. And I would always tell myself, oh,
- 5:03Speaker 5: don't worry, I'll just make it again, or I'll get
- 5:07Speaker 5: a job, or like because I freelances while I do
- 5:10Speaker 5: a lot of photography and videography, like I'll just book
- 5:12Speaker 5: some clients and get some money. It'll all be fine.
- 5:17Speaker 5: So yeah, I'm going to say that it's pretty influenced
- 5:20Speaker 5: by what I'm doing, and I feel like it's I
- 5:22Speaker 5: feel like I'm really alone with that. And I felt
- 5:25Speaker 5: like it was why I kind of wanted to get
- 5:27Speaker 5: on here and talk about it, because yeah, every time
- 5:31Speaker 5: I would be stressed about it, people wouldn't. I felt
- 5:33Speaker 5: like people weren't really taking it seriously because they were like, Oh,
- 5:36Speaker 5: I don't worry, just do some savings or whatever. But like, no,
- 5:39Speaker 5: I was so weak to weak. It was really bad.
- 5:43Speaker 3: And that sounds like a really stressful position to be
- 5:46Speaker 3: in because I'm assuming from the outside looking in, you
- 5:49Speaker 3: probably looked like a really successful business owner who had
- 5:52Speaker 3: theseus was killing it, and so they assumed that, all right, well,
- 5:55Speaker 3: she'll have pockets of cash somewhere.
- 5:57Speaker 5: Right exactly exactly, And to talk about not doing good
- 6:01Speaker 5: to your clients or on your socials was like so
- 6:05Speaker 5: taboo or it was kind of like nobody really wanted
- 6:09Speaker 5: to hear it. And I actually wrote a blog about
- 6:12Speaker 5: like the ins and outs of my business because when
- 6:14Speaker 5: people didn't lock up or people just canceled last minute,
- 6:17Speaker 5: like it affected me so much. But yeah, like in
- 6:20Speaker 5: that case, because my business was service based, I just
- 6:24Speaker 5: work an extra few hours to make the money that
- 6:27Speaker 5: I needed or something like that. So I think I'm
- 6:30Speaker 5: learning a good attitude towards money.
- 6:33Speaker 3: I love that as much as it's not serving you
- 6:35Speaker 3: right now. I really genuinely love that you've got that
- 6:38Speaker 3: level of reflection and you're like, look, that's actually not
- 6:41Speaker 3: serving me anymore. I need to change this. But yeah,
- 6:44Speaker 3: it also sounds a bit like you're not sure what
- 6:46Speaker 3: the next step to actually facilitate that change is. And
- 6:49Speaker 3: we will get there. But yeah, the next question is
- 6:53Speaker 3: what do you do for work and how much do
- 6:55Speaker 3: you currently earn.
- 6:58Speaker 5: Well, now, I still am in the be the industry.
- 7:01Speaker 5: I work as a cosmetic tutoist, lash and brow artist,
- 7:07Speaker 5: and combined with my freelance and photography, which are both casual,
- 7:11Speaker 5: I probably make I just under like sixty five before tax.
- 7:16Speaker 3: Yeah, that's not too bad, especially in your freelance. And
- 7:20Speaker 3: I'm pretty sure our friend Covid has had.
- 7:24Speaker 5: A little bit of an impact people in.
- 7:26Speaker 3: The last twelve months. But that's just me, you know.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Especially the two particular industries you're in, beauty and no photography.
- 7:34Speaker 4: You know, nobody.
- 7:35Speaker 2: We weren't allowed to touch anybody for a whole year.
- 7:39Speaker 5: It was so bad. But I was so lucky when
- 7:41Speaker 5: I lived in Adelaide. I casually worked one day a
- 7:44Speaker 5: week at a p dietary clinic just to in front
- 7:47Speaker 5: of house and like nails and Joel removal, and they
- 7:50Speaker 5: put me on job keeper. But because I had been
- 7:52Speaker 5: there for however long it was and got job keeper
- 7:55Speaker 5: from them, I actually wasn't allowed to claim anything through
- 7:58Speaker 5: my business. Yeah yeah, yeah, And I didn't know that.
- 8:03Speaker 5: So when the opportunity came for me to jump on
- 8:05Speaker 5: the job keeper with the pediatric clinic, I was like, yep,
- 8:08Speaker 5: and then I can still get what i've Yeah, So
- 8:13Speaker 5: I was lucky in that sense. I was able to
- 8:16Speaker 5: go on job keeper and keep me afloat throughout that time.
- 8:19Speaker 3: All right, what is your big money goal right now?
- 8:25Speaker 5: I just want to get on top of my debts.
- 8:30Speaker 5: I just want to pay all them off, as I've
- 8:32Speaker 5: heard on your podcast many a time, and you don't
- 8:35Speaker 5: have savings if you've got debt. So currently I don't
- 8:37Speaker 5: have any savings goals. I'm just trying to work hard,
- 8:41Speaker 5: pay off my debts and just stay ahead. I really
- 8:43Speaker 5: want to have that freedom to like not wake up
- 8:46Speaker 5: with this big cloud of tax sp.
- 8:49Speaker 3: Yeah, and that's actually really challenging because I do absolutely
- 8:52Speaker 3: subscribe to the belief that if you are in debt,
- 8:55Speaker 3: you don't have savings. Yeah, but I so believe very
- 8:59Speaker 3: passionately that even if you are in debt, you need
- 9:01Speaker 3: an emergency account because I don't call those savings savings
- 9:04Speaker 3: are things that we are going to use for the future.
- 9:07Speaker 3: An emergency account is sitting to the side so that
- 9:10Speaker 3: if something else should pop up, we don't end up
- 9:12Speaker 3: having to go into more Dell, not a cash cash,
- 9:17Speaker 3: so like if something happened to your dog, you can
- 9:20Speaker 3: actually pay for that out right. And I think that
- 9:23Speaker 3: a lot of.
- 9:23Speaker 2: People confuse what that actually is for.
- 9:28Speaker 3: Yeah, they confuse what that's for, and they will refer
- 9:30Speaker 3: to their emergency get account as savings that they have
- 9:33Speaker 3: that are disposable. You're like, no, no, no, that actually
- 9:36Speaker 3: needs to sit there because that's kind of your you know,
- 9:39Speaker 3: that's your buffer. That's the thing that you're going to
- 9:40Speaker 3: rely on when we don't have cash coming in and
- 9:43Speaker 3: if something happens, we can dip into that. And I
- 9:46Speaker 3: think too many times people forget to prioritize themselves and
- 9:51Speaker 3: they know that while you're in debt, having an emergency
- 9:53Speaker 3: account would actually afford you some level of financial freedom
- 9:56Speaker 3: because you'd feel a lot more comfortable. So I think
- 9:59Speaker 3: that something that even if you are in debt, I
- 10:02Speaker 3: would always prioritize, even if it's like one hundred dollars
- 10:06Speaker 3: sitting to the side, even if it's like, you know,
- 10:09Speaker 3: five hundred dollars, like whatever you can afford to put
- 10:11Speaker 3: a side in cash and going nope, I'm just gonna
- 10:14Speaker 3: save that for a rainy day. I'm going to save
- 10:16Speaker 3: that in my emergency fund. It will always make you
- 10:19Speaker 3: feel a little bit more comfortable.
- 10:21Speaker 4: And prioritize that over debt reduction.
- 10:23Speaker 3: Yes, absolutely, because reduction can take years. Debt reduction can
- 10:27Speaker 3: take a really long time and feel really overwhelming. But
- 10:30Speaker 3: what we can do to make that period of time
- 10:33Speaker 3: while we're paying debt off less overwhelming is making sure
- 10:36Speaker 3: we have something on the side to look after ourselves.
- 10:38Speaker 3: We're not saying go save for a holiday, because that's
- 10:41Speaker 3: not what we mean. What we mean is go and
- 10:44Speaker 3: put some money to the side. So if the proverbial
- 10:47Speaker 3: hits the fan again, we're not going into more debt.
- 10:50Speaker 3: We're not relying on other sources of debt to service that,
- 10:54Speaker 3: because it then becomes a spiral and it spirals out
- 10:57Speaker 3: of control.
- 10:58Speaker 4: But that's why we're here.
- 11:00Speaker 3: Yeah, that's why we talk about money.
- 11:02Speaker 4: All the time.
- 11:02Speaker 5: Literally, I love the podcast. And you know what, You're
- 11:05Speaker 5: so right because the other day I have another dog.
- 11:08Speaker 5: I took it as a dog puck and she got bit
- 11:10Speaker 5: and like I had to go, yeah, she's okay. I
- 11:13Speaker 5: had to take it to the bet And I was
- 11:14Speaker 5: texting to my boyfriend. I'm like, babe, like, all I've
- 11:16Speaker 5: got is my current pay, Like that'll just that means
- 11:19Speaker 5: I won't be able to pay rent. And like he
- 11:21Speaker 5: is honestly such an angel, like he he paid for it.
- 11:24Speaker 5: He also paid my tax debt so that I didn't
- 11:28Speaker 5: have to pay interest and now I pay him back.
- 11:30Speaker 3: Oh that is so sweet.
- 11:32Speaker 4: I'm so cleary.
- 11:34Speaker 5: Oh oh my god. He is the total opposite of me,
- 11:37Speaker 5: and like he Yeah, he's been a really great influence
- 11:43Speaker 5: I guess in me wanting to get better as well
- 11:46Speaker 5: and with Yeah, so like when you say that, like
- 11:49Speaker 5: I got paid and then that happened, and I'm like, shit,
- 11:51Speaker 5: I've got nothing aside for this anymore. So yeah, but.
- 11:57Speaker 3: I do say opposites are tract so that makes sense
- 12:00Speaker 3: to me.
- 12:01Speaker 5: Well, that's when he third, He's like ying young baby,
- 12:04Speaker 5: and I'm like, I love him. Yeah, he is so
- 12:09Speaker 5: Spapy's best.
- 12:10Speaker 3: All right, next question is do you currently have any investments.
- 12:15Speaker 5: I don't know, and I've always been so interested. I
- 12:19Speaker 5: went and actually saw a financial advisor because this is
- 12:22Speaker 5: like I think last year when I when COVID happened,
- 12:26Speaker 5: and I was like, oh my god, I just need
- 12:27Speaker 5: to speak to somebody. And I thought I thought financial
- 12:29Speaker 5: advisors so funny. I thought that they would just say
- 12:32Speaker 5: to kind of like talk to you about your money,
- 12:33Speaker 5: which you guys are help you. And I just I
- 12:37Speaker 5: honestly was looking for somebody to get me out of
- 12:40Speaker 5: the trouble that I was in by like telling me
- 12:43Speaker 5: what I need to do or like consolidating them all
- 12:46Speaker 5: and hooking me up like with a really good that
- 12:49Speaker 5: payment plan. And he was he was good at explaining,
- 12:53Speaker 5: you know, what I need to pay off first, but
- 12:56Speaker 5: then also just jumped straight into wanting to do super investments.
- 13:01Speaker 3: Well you're like, this is too much, too soon, this
- 13:04Speaker 3: is not what for.
- 13:06Speaker 5: Yeah, So I just wanted to talk to somebody because
- 13:09Speaker 5: I was so scared about how to get out of
- 13:12Speaker 5: this pickle. And you know, I have my family. My
- 13:15Speaker 5: brother he invests and his friends invest and they make
- 13:18Speaker 5: money off investing. You know, this is something that we
- 13:20Speaker 5: need to do. But I need to kind of get
- 13:22Speaker 5: out of the debt that I'm.
- 13:23Speaker 3: In, absolutely, and I wish, I wish I could see
- 13:26Speaker 3: everybody in that situation down and say, hey, you don't
- 13:30Speaker 3: actually need a financial advisor. You actually need to allow
- 13:33Speaker 3: friends at the National Debt Helpline and you need to
- 13:35Speaker 3: be connected with a free financial counselor so that they
- 13:38Speaker 3: can tell you all, right, debt reduction strategy, this is
- 13:41Speaker 3: what it is, and get you in contact with the
- 13:43Speaker 3: people that could help you. I will take that debt
- 13:45Speaker 3: or you know, talk to those debts that you have
- 13:48Speaker 3: to negotiate them down. And it just one of those calls.
- 13:53Speaker 2: That you like can't make because you're scared and you're
- 13:55Speaker 2: really vulnerable, and they'll make it easier.
- 13:58Speaker 3: And like, don't get me wrong, I've done exactly the
- 14:00Speaker 3: same thing for clients, and like it's something that you know,
- 14:02Speaker 3: if someone came to me and said, hey, I really
- 14:05Speaker 3: need your help with this, of course I would and
- 14:08Speaker 3: I do know what I'm doing. But these guys literally
- 14:10Speaker 3: do it day in day out and it's free, and
- 14:13Speaker 3: then you're not going to have that added pressure of
- 14:14Speaker 3: them going okay, but how can I commercialize this? How
- 14:17Speaker 3: can I, you know, make money from this interaction?
- 14:19Speaker 5: I didn't know that.
- 14:21Speaker 3: Yeah, it would.
- 14:21Speaker 2: Free, so money tourist will show you the way we're
- 14:26Speaker 2: on it.
- 14:27Speaker 3: Anyway, let's move on with the questions. Next question. I
- 14:31Speaker 3: feel like we've already addressed it, but it is do
- 14:33Speaker 3: you have any debts? And if so, how much debt
- 14:36Speaker 3: are you in?
- 14:38Speaker 5: I do so. I am eighteen thousand dollars?
- 14:44Speaker 3: Is that right?
- 14:46Speaker 5: Three zero?
- 14:47Speaker 3: Yeah? Eighteen thousand, yep.
- 14:49Speaker 5: Ye.
- 14:49Speaker 3: Imagine if it was four zeros and it was one
- 14:51Speaker 3: hundred and eighty thousand, that would be so sick.
- 14:53Speaker 5: And oh yeah, yeah, I've been paying off my tax
- 15:00Speaker 5: debt to my boyfriend currently. I pay him twenty dollars
- 15:06Speaker 5: a week because he's the best. And then I've got
- 15:09Speaker 5: that lovely Lombard account that we all have, m won,
- 15:15Speaker 5: all of us. But you know when you go to
- 15:16Speaker 5: go on a holiday and they're like, oh, well, you
- 15:18Speaker 5: can just put it on a ten thousand dollars credit card.
- 15:20Speaker 5: H hey, yeah, so I've got fifteen hundred on that.
- 15:24Speaker 5: And then I've got a gem visa with two thousand
- 15:28Speaker 5: and seven hundred on there, slowly chipping away them.
- 15:33Speaker 3: But yeah, that's.
- 15:34Speaker 4: That's my debt.
- 15:35Speaker 5: I don't have a car debt. I don't have any
- 15:38Speaker 5: student debt.
- 15:40Speaker 3: Just tax, just tax in a little bit of personal debt.
- 15:45Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, but it sounds like you're on the right track.
- 15:49Speaker 5: Yeah, totally like I for years. It's like, for years,
- 15:52Speaker 5: I just ignored it because I didn't want to face it.
- 15:55Speaker 5: And I actually didn't realize how accommodating companies are if
- 15:58Speaker 5: you just call them and tell them your situation.
- 16:00Speaker 2: That is so true, rather than just keeping getting dishonored payments.
- 16:04Speaker 2: Say it actually prefer if you call them and go, hey,
- 16:07Speaker 2: I'm actually in a bit of a people, do you mind?
- 16:09Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 16:10Speaker 5: I had yeah, yeah, And when one of them I've
- 16:14Speaker 5: had since I was twenty one, and I remember when
- 16:16Speaker 5: I called. I spoke to this really great guy and
- 16:19Speaker 5: he was like, look, we don't want to put you
- 16:20Speaker 5: in any more debt, so we'll give you yeah, I know,
- 16:24Speaker 5: and like that was the best. I actually like their
- 16:26Speaker 5: feedback with that comedy because I was so I was crying.
- 16:29Speaker 5: I was like so stressed because I was ignoring it,
- 16:31Speaker 5: ignoring it, ignoring it, and then yeah, if you just
- 16:35Speaker 5: like even with electricity bills, like if I'm ever going
- 16:38Speaker 5: to be late, I just called them that, hey, can
- 16:40Speaker 5: we please extend? It's like, yeah, no worries, Like they
- 16:43Speaker 5: literally don't care.
- 16:45Speaker 4: They actually want.
- 16:46Speaker 3: You to communicate with them. They actually want you to
- 16:49Speaker 3: just be honest about it, because at the end of
- 16:51Speaker 3: the day, if you communicate, they're going to get paid,
- 16:54Speaker 3: whereas if it's payments, they're like, well, are we ever
- 16:57Speaker 3: going to get paid? Like what's the deal?
- 16:58Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 16:59Speaker 3: So I think that's actually a really important point to
- 17:02Speaker 3: point out, and that's stop bearing if you're in debt,
- 17:06Speaker 3: stop bearing your head in the sand, and start just going,
- 17:09Speaker 3: you know what, these people probably care about me as well,
- 17:12Speaker 3: because I guarantee you they do. Give them a call.
- 17:15Speaker 3: Is it a bank loan, is it a car loan?
- 17:17Speaker 3: Is it a credit card? Give them a call and say, hey, guys,
- 17:20Speaker 3: I'm in a bit of a pickle. What can we do?
- 17:22Speaker 3: And more often than not, they're going to be willing
- 17:24Speaker 3: to work with you because they want to eventually get paid,
- 17:28Speaker 3: and if that means they agree on a lower term
- 17:30Speaker 3: so that you can pay it off over a longer
- 17:32Speaker 3: period of time, they're more likely to agree to that,
- 17:35Speaker 3: to say, you know what, You're right, we don't want
- 17:37Speaker 3: you in more debt, and ultimately we just want this
- 17:39Speaker 3: paid back. But if we put you in so much
- 17:41Speaker 3: financial stress that you can't, there's every option that you'll
- 17:45Speaker 3: default and just not pay it back at all.
- 17:47Speaker 5: Yeah. I had no idea. So that was something that
- 17:50Speaker 5: I just wish I did earlier on because I definitely
- 17:52Speaker 5: would be in the situation that I'm in.
- 17:55Speaker 3: Now and it would have taken a fair bit of
- 17:56Speaker 3: stress off as well, just knowing, oh, that's actually, you know,
- 17:59Speaker 3: not as overwhelming as I thought it was going to be.
- 18:02Speaker 5: Yeah, And I called them and it's done.
- 18:04Speaker 3: And that leads into another question that is one of
- 18:06Speaker 3: my favorite questions to ask, and that is what is
- 18:09Speaker 3: your best money habit?
- 18:12Speaker 5: Oh my god, do you know what? I don't think
- 18:16Speaker 5: I have one? Like no, no, no, no.
- 18:19Speaker 3: I could not only reframe this, my friend, it is
- 18:21Speaker 3: facing your debts. Your best money habit is recently weren't
- 18:26Speaker 3: and it is opening up to the fact that you
- 18:28Speaker 3: have debt and you want to get it done, and
- 18:29Speaker 3: you want to get it paid down and you're willing
- 18:32Speaker 3: to put your hand up and go, no, this is overwhelming.
- 18:35Speaker 3: I can't deal with that. And you're calling people like
- 18:37Speaker 3: just before you said you have the confidence to call
- 18:39Speaker 3: the electricity company if you can't make the debt, Like, yeah,
- 18:43Speaker 3: I don't even know if I could do that, because
- 18:45Speaker 3: picking up the phone can feel really overwhelming.
- 18:48Speaker 5: Yeah, and having the shame of just being like you know,
- 18:50Speaker 5: because they kind of sometimes make you feel a little
- 18:52Speaker 5: bit like, oh, what so you can't pay that stay
- 18:54Speaker 5: and I'm literally like, no, I can't. I'm so sorry.
- 18:58Speaker 3: But that's okay, because what we need to remember is
- 19:00Speaker 3: the people on the phone are usually just like us,
- 19:02Speaker 3: Like you're calling them and they're at their job. They
- 19:06Speaker 3: know what a credit card is, like some of them
- 19:08Speaker 3: are probably going to be in debt themselves, like.
- 19:10Speaker 2: They don't own a gl they don't have any ulterior motives.
- 19:13Speaker 3: Nah, you know, you're not calling the CEO, Like you're
- 19:16Speaker 3: not like, hey, CEO, you earn like hundreds of millions
- 19:19Speaker 3: of dollars, just wondering it's actually you're calling someone who's
- 19:24Speaker 3: probably in the same situation as you, earns a very
- 19:27Speaker 3: similar amount and potentially has either grappled with this themselves
- 19:31Speaker 3: or has friends and family who have grappled with this.
- 19:34Speaker 3: And if we start to contextualize what these things look
- 19:38Speaker 3: like and humanize it, you go, you know what, it's
- 19:40Speaker 3: not actually that weird to pick up the phone and
- 19:42Speaker 3: just chat with somebody, because you know, inherently people are
- 19:45Speaker 3: kind and inherently people and want the best figure And
- 19:49Speaker 3: I think that you're learning this and it's something that
- 19:51Speaker 3: I want you to hire community to learn. And that's
- 19:54Speaker 3: the if you just put your hand up, I guarantee
- 19:57Speaker 3: you there are more people around who want to help
- 19:59Speaker 3: you than not.
- 20:00Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah, And like that was really why I decided
- 20:04Speaker 5: to submit my money diary, because when I decided to
- 20:07Speaker 5: close my business, like I didn't have to be like
- 20:10Speaker 5: I was so busy, but I just couldn't grow and
- 20:15Speaker 5: get ahead, if you know what I mean. Like it
- 20:17Speaker 5: was like the money was coming in, but then it
- 20:19Speaker 5: was going straight back out. But I was still booked
- 20:21Speaker 5: and busy every day. Sometimes people's lives aren't always what
- 20:26Speaker 5: it think. Yeah, And if anybody I guess, you know,
- 20:31Speaker 5: thinking about starting a business or they owning a business,
- 20:34Speaker 5: and they say, like not doing the things that I
- 20:38Speaker 5: was doing, Like you know, not taking out any super
- 20:40Speaker 5: or any tax, Like it's, yeah, I just really hoped
- 20:43Speaker 5: this could help somebody, or because I felt so alone,
- 20:46Speaker 5: and I still do feel really alone, Like being with
- 20:48Speaker 5: a partner who spoke great at money and it's always
- 20:51Speaker 5: been so great with money, you just feel really upset.
- 20:54Speaker 5: I guess in a little bit not worthless, but you
- 20:56Speaker 5: just don't understand. Well, I don't know. It's just always
- 20:59Speaker 5: hard to kind of know, like how did I get
- 21:01Speaker 5: here and how can I get out? I just wanted
- 21:03Speaker 5: somebody not alone.
- 21:06Speaker 4: But there's some people are so kind.
- 21:08Speaker 2: There's a Victoria Divine special quote which I'm going to
- 21:10Speaker 2: rattle off you.
- 21:11Speaker 3: What is it?
- 21:12Speaker 2: And it's you don't know what you don't know, so
- 21:16Speaker 2: you can't look back on yourself and judge yourself for
- 21:20Speaker 2: not paying tax or taking super or whatever, because you
- 21:24Speaker 2: didn't know that you had to do that. I know,
- 21:26Speaker 2: how Billy, No, you didn't know. You didn't know.
- 21:31Speaker 3: But I'm so excited for your future because like as
- 21:33Speaker 3: much as you're in debt right now, like, think about
- 21:36Speaker 3: all the knowledge you have now if you go you
- 21:38Speaker 3: know what business was for me, But this time I'm
- 21:40Speaker 3: going to do it right. I guarantee you you would
- 21:43Speaker 3: go to your accountant first and set up your banking
- 21:46Speaker 3: structures to make sure that that never happens again. And
- 21:49Speaker 3: so often you see successful people, they're not actually the
- 21:53Speaker 3: ones that just got up in the morning and we're like,
- 21:55Speaker 3: you know what, I'm going to create a business.
- 21:57Speaker 5: They're the ones that.
- 21:57Speaker 3: Got up when they were pushed down. They were in debt,
- 22:00Speaker 3: and they had businesses failing, and then they tried again.
- 22:03Speaker 3: And I think you start looking into people who have
- 22:07Speaker 3: genuinely been successful. Their key differentiating factor. From my perspective,
- 22:13Speaker 3: I've obviously got this like just idea that I know
- 22:15Speaker 3: what I'm talking about. It's actually their grit. And grit
- 22:20Speaker 3: is something that you know, I see in other people,
- 22:23Speaker 3: and it's probably the one trait that I genuinely look
- 22:26Speaker 3: out and I go, oh my gosh, like I want
- 22:28Speaker 3: to be more like them. What is it? I can't
- 22:30Speaker 3: put my finger on it. It's their grit.
- 22:32Speaker 4: But you get back up every time.
- 22:33Speaker 3: They get back up every time, like they're never down
- 22:35Speaker 3: about what people are saying about them. They you know,
- 22:38Speaker 3: take every every opportunity that comes in their stride as
- 22:41Speaker 3: a learning opportunity, and you just go Wow, Like I
- 22:43Speaker 3: wish I was more like that. It's not somebody who
- 22:47Speaker 3: was an overnight success because you go, well, that that
- 22:49Speaker 3: kind of comes down to luck, Like you know, they
- 22:52Speaker 3: were just lucky that they had the right advice and
- 22:54Speaker 3: they were lucky that then you know what, you don't
- 22:56Speaker 3: want to put it down to luck. But I think
- 22:58Speaker 3: that we just really don't ward the people that we
- 23:01Speaker 3: see who are successful after getting up so many times
- 23:04Speaker 3: as much as we should, because that's really impressive. And
- 23:07Speaker 3: from the sound of it, you sound like that person.
- 23:09Speaker 3: You're just halfway through that journey.
- 23:12Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, just deciding to shut it into close and
- 23:16Speaker 5: to move back to Queensland where my family was. I
- 23:18Speaker 5: guess I wasn't scared because I can see the end goal,
- 23:21Speaker 5: Like I can see how good things will be and everything,
- 23:24Speaker 5: like it's already all in the stars. Like I'm just
- 23:27Speaker 5: going with it because I know that the whole journey's
- 23:30Speaker 5: already literally planned out. I just have to do what
- 23:33Speaker 5: I'm currently doing and just know that, Yeah, I guess
- 23:36Speaker 5: everything will be okay.
- 23:40Speaker 3: Yeah, even at the.
- 23:41Speaker 2: Bottom of your email, you said better things are coming,
- 23:43Speaker 2: Like I'm positive.
- 23:44Speaker 4: There's not a lot of people, yeah that have.
- 23:46Speaker 2: Been through what you've been through, and at where you're
- 23:48Speaker 2: at now that have that outlook, you know, and it
- 23:51Speaker 2: definitely makes me think that your best money habit is
- 23:54Speaker 2: that you feel comfortable talking about it even though it's
- 23:58Speaker 2: not great at the moment, and you're on a way
- 24:00Speaker 2: to making it better.
- 24:02Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Oh, if I'm so poetic, you are.
- 24:05Speaker 3: You are a poet and you didn't even know it.
- 24:10Speaker 4: Oh my god. A career in comedies on the past.
- 24:14Speaker 3: For both of us, for you, Tony, not for you.
- 24:17Speaker 3: I'm going to ask the last question before we jump
- 24:19Speaker 3: to a quick break. I'm not going to ask you
- 24:22Speaker 3: what your worst money habit is because I just don't
- 24:24Speaker 3: want to bring the vibe of this conversation down. So
- 24:27Speaker 3: what grade would you give yourself? If I forced you
- 24:30Speaker 3: to give yourself.
- 24:30Speaker 5: A money grade, I would probably give myself a C.
- 24:38Speaker 3: I like that. That's fair. That's a fair.
- 24:41Speaker 5: I don't run anymore, and I prioritize what my money
- 24:45Speaker 5: goes to.
- 24:46Speaker 4: I like that.
- 24:48Speaker 2: And I know that we've definitely got enough track through
- 24:50Speaker 2: the structured well I say structured in quotation marked. But
- 24:54Speaker 2: we're going to take a really really quick break right
- 24:56Speaker 2: now and then keep asking some perfey questions, So do
- 24:58Speaker 2: not go anywhere.
- 25:00Speaker 3: There's so many have your questions. So jumping straight back
- 25:13Speaker 3: into it, obviously all of this is a lot to
- 25:17Speaker 3: take in for you as well as for us. But
- 25:20Speaker 3: I also I'm just I'm so excited about this story.
- 25:23Speaker 3: But you said before making the decision to close your
- 25:26Speaker 3: business and move home was something that was hard to do,
- 25:29Speaker 3: but it wasn't because your business was a failure. So
- 25:33Speaker 3: can you talk us through that decision making process? And
- 25:35Speaker 3: I guess what led you to go? You know what,
- 25:37Speaker 3: I'm done with this. I'm going to move home.
- 25:39Speaker 4: You know, I need to get my affairs in order.
- 25:41Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, what was I guess the straw that broke
- 25:44Speaker 3: the camel's back there.
- 25:48Speaker 5: It's going to sound so cheesy too, but it was
- 25:50Speaker 5: becoming an auntie as well.
- 25:53Speaker 3: Oh cute, Yes, she likes babies. She is my people told.
- 25:59Speaker 5: You, Yeah, we are my older sister. It's the first child,
- 26:04Speaker 5: like out of our four kids.
- 26:06Speaker 4: That's very special.
- 26:08Speaker 5: Yeah, that happened. I guess, like with having the business,
- 26:14Speaker 5: I was from home in the beginning and then I
- 26:17Speaker 5: moved commercial because I did tattooing and you can't well
- 26:21Speaker 5: you can, but I didn't want to be that person
- 26:23Speaker 5: that operated illegally. Yeah. Yeah, I don't pay my taxes,
- 26:29Speaker 5: but I would.
- 26:30Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't play my taxes, but I am absolutely
- 26:33Speaker 3: not going to be doing a shop.
- 26:36Speaker 5: Yeah, it's all the front I yeah. So I was
- 26:51Speaker 5: paying obviously, Yeah, renting commercially, constantly, just buying, just staying
- 26:57Speaker 5: afloat with the business. And it was a client that
- 27:01Speaker 5: broke the straw on the camel's back. My client asked
- 27:04Speaker 5: me how I was, and I was. She was a
- 27:07Speaker 5: cosmetic tato in client as well, so like, she's going
- 27:09Speaker 5: to need me for the next year, every single year
- 27:12Speaker 5: for her brows to stay alive. But she said to me,
- 27:14Speaker 5: she was like, I think that it's really important as
- 27:17Speaker 5: people that we constantly re evaluate what we're doing, because
- 27:21Speaker 5: what serves you five years ago might not serve me now.
- 27:25Speaker 3: She's Gandhi.
- 27:26Speaker 5: Yeah, and five years ago, I was single and I
- 27:33Speaker 5: would just work. I would grind, just work, work, work.
- 27:36Speaker 5: I was so work. And then I met my partner
- 27:39Speaker 5: and he's from the UK and he's just breezy and
- 27:43Speaker 5: chill and slow, and I really needed that and he
- 27:49Speaker 5: slowed me down a lot, and it kind of got
- 27:52Speaker 5: me thinking that having like I had this goal to
- 27:54Speaker 5: have this really big salon and to do everything and
- 27:57Speaker 5: be that one place that does everything perfectly. And I
- 28:00Speaker 5: knew that it was going to be really hard to
- 28:02Speaker 5: get there, and I was willing to put somebody on
- 28:04Speaker 5: the following year, and I was going to get myself
- 28:07Speaker 5: out of the rut that I was in. But then
- 28:10Speaker 5: I couldn't slow down. So we would go away, we'd
- 28:12Speaker 5: go camping, and I'd have no reception and I'd be
- 28:14Speaker 5: having panic attacks with them, like oh, somebody's going to
- 28:16Speaker 5: have some weird reaction, or oh my god, if a
- 28:18Speaker 5: client needs to talk to me, I'm unavailable. And I
- 28:22Speaker 5: kind of just changed, Yeah, the direction that I wanted
- 28:26Speaker 5: my life to go in. I realized that I kind
- 28:28Speaker 5: of didn't want to.
- 28:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 28:33Speaker 5: I wanted to be able to turn off and just
- 28:36Speaker 5: slow down. And another one of my photography clients, he's
- 28:40Speaker 5: a jeweler, he said to me, he's like, you can't
- 28:43Speaker 5: have both. He's like, you can't go and travel for
- 28:45Speaker 5: a whole year and then come back to a business
- 28:49Speaker 5: for what I do because I'm so service based. And
- 28:53Speaker 5: I kind of thought for a long time, or do
- 28:55Speaker 5: I want this business, or do I want to travel?
- 28:58Speaker 5: Like what do I want? And when I thought about
- 29:03Speaker 5: closing and moving back home just to take some time
- 29:07Speaker 5: and to not do anything, that just felt really good
- 29:09Speaker 5: to me and I am less stressed, Like I'm not
- 29:14Speaker 5: worried anymore about having rent paid on time, And if
- 29:18Speaker 5: a whole day canceled, it was so tragic to me
- 29:21Speaker 5: because it would just affect everything. I wasn't in a position,
- 29:25Speaker 5: I guess, to be able to grow without having to
- 29:28Speaker 5: really be at the bottom of the barrel. And like
- 29:29Speaker 5: I've done it before, and I don't. I'm like that
- 29:32Speaker 5: weirdo that kind of really thrives when things are rough,
- 29:35Speaker 5: Like give me a hard situation, and I find it horny,
- 29:37Speaker 5: Like I love eating two minute noodles and sleeping out
- 29:41Speaker 5: of my car, Like I love the feeling that this
- 29:44Speaker 5: is really bad but it's for the best, you.
- 29:47Speaker 4: Know what I mean.
- 29:47Speaker 5: Like, so I guess I just didn't want to struggle
- 29:51Speaker 5: anymore as well.
- 29:52Speaker 3: And I love that because that's a hard decision to make.
- 29:55Speaker 3: But it sounds like you were making it for yourself
- 29:57Speaker 3: and your mental health and the power that you want
- 29:59Speaker 3: to to create, not necessarily the future that you know
- 30:03Speaker 3: you were working towards five years ago. That's such an
- 30:06Speaker 3: important point because five years ago, had you said to Tony,
- 30:09Speaker 3: do you think this is where you're going to be sitting,
- 30:11Speaker 3: I'm sure she would say.
- 30:12Speaker 4: Absolutely not came with me.
- 30:14Speaker 3: And too many times we stick to the plans that
- 30:17Speaker 3: we made for ourselves when we didn't have a view
- 30:20Speaker 3: of what the future looks like.
- 30:22Speaker 2: And being your head against the wall trying to make
- 30:24Speaker 2: it work, when actually we're humans, we can be more dynamic.
- 30:27Speaker 2: We can look at this and go, actually, this is
- 30:29Speaker 2: what I really wanted. But right now it's just not
- 30:32Speaker 2: for me. But me, it doesn't mean that in a year,
- 30:34Speaker 2: five years, twenty years you couldn't open another salon. Doesn't
- 30:38Speaker 2: mean you couldn't do that again. But just for right now,
- 30:40Speaker 2: it's like, you know what, I need a break.
- 30:42Speaker 4: I want to enjoy my.
- 30:43Speaker 2: Family, and that's really special. Not a lot of people
- 30:46Speaker 2: have the foresight to be able to go like this
- 30:47Speaker 2: can happen again.
- 30:48Speaker 4: It's just not for me right now.
- 30:50Speaker 3: And I think Yea said just too stubborn. We go, no,
- 30:53Speaker 3: I've been working for this like for the last five years,
- 30:57Speaker 3: and you go, yeah, that it might not be so
- 31:00Speaker 3: you anymore, whether that is that create a relationship, a business,
- 31:04Speaker 3: a friendship, you know, a job, like you don't just
- 31:07Speaker 3: have to stay because of tenure. You don't have to
- 31:10Speaker 3: just stay because well I've been here for five years,
- 31:12Speaker 3: Like that'll be a waste.
- 31:14Speaker 4: But it's not a waste.
- 31:15Speaker 2: It's not because you learn so much and are put
- 31:17Speaker 2: into situations that you can't plan. You can't orchestrate the
- 31:21Speaker 2: things that you're going to learn in those situations. But
- 31:23Speaker 2: you can go all right, you know what. I know
- 31:25Speaker 2: that I've been studying to be an equestrian nurse for
- 31:28Speaker 2: twenty years, but like now I don't want to do
- 31:30Speaker 2: That doesn't mean that you forget everything you new about horses,
- 31:33Speaker 2: very random example, I don't think. But it doesn't mean
- 31:38Speaker 2: that you forget what a horse looks like just because
- 31:40Speaker 2: you decide that you want to open an ice cream shop.
- 31:43Speaker 3: Like that would be a career pivot and a half,
- 31:45Speaker 3: wouldn't it, Tony?
- 31:46Speaker 2: Where does that come from?
- 31:47Speaker 3: I really like it, But I think it's I think
- 31:49Speaker 3: it's the same. And I feel like this transcends, you know,
- 31:52Speaker 3: not just money, but also into relationships. And you know,
- 31:55Speaker 3: we've all got that friend that you know you're kind
- 31:58Speaker 3: of going you probably should break up with your partner
- 31:59Speaker 3: because they're not that positive for you, or they're a
- 32:01Speaker 3: bit toxic or you know, you're not your best version
- 32:04Speaker 3: of you with them, and they say, oh, yeah, but I've.
- 32:06Speaker 2: Been them forever.
- 32:07Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, exactly, And it is one of those things
- 32:10Speaker 3: that you just go but like it's not a waste.
- 32:13Speaker 3: You've learnt so much about you and they've got yeah
- 32:16Speaker 3: thirty and I'd have to go find a boyfriend.
- 32:20Speaker 5: All the dunk cost fallacy.
- 32:22Speaker 3: Oh what is that?
- 32:24Speaker 5: It's like where you stay with something because you feel
- 32:27Speaker 5: like you owe it from the time that you've put
- 32:29Speaker 5: into it.
- 32:30Speaker 4: Like, yeah, in positions like that, we definitely.
- 32:36Speaker 3: But like it doesn't matter who you are or how
- 32:38Speaker 3: old you are or you know what stage you're in.
- 32:41Speaker 4: You don't owe anyone anything.
- 32:42Speaker 3: No cut it.
- 32:43Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, live your best life.
- 32:46Speaker 3: Oh look, yeahs.
- 32:52Speaker 2: Do you think you'll ever open another business?
- 32:56Speaker 5: I do. I definitely do doing what though I'm I'm
- 33:00Speaker 5: not entirely sure. Like with my photography, I've got like
- 33:03Speaker 5: four weddings books and I've only ever done one.
- 33:07Speaker 4: That's amazing. That is so and we all know that
- 33:10Speaker 4: weddings are.
- 33:10Speaker 2: Expensive so hopefully, hopefully you're getting a nice little payday
- 33:13Speaker 2: out of all.
- 33:15Speaker 5: Yes and and DSc.
- 33:19Speaker 4: Done.
- 33:20Speaker 5: Yes, Yeah, I definitely think so, like probably in photography
- 33:25Speaker 5: though I love beauty, but I remember, I just I
- 33:28Speaker 5: feel like we don't just have to do one thing,
- 33:31Speaker 5: oh now, absolutely our life. And I don't believe on
- 33:35Speaker 5: falling back like I don't think I want at least
- 33:37Speaker 5: I can just fall back on beauty because I'm going
- 33:39Speaker 5: to do something, it's going to still be like going forward.
- 33:42Speaker 5: So if I were to fall forward, I guess it
- 33:45Speaker 5: would be in something to do with beauty and the
- 33:48Speaker 5: skills that I've learned, but might not necessarily be like
- 33:51Speaker 5: I don't know on the tools or anything. But I
- 33:55Speaker 5: definitely do like the idea of having a business, and
- 33:58Speaker 5: if I were to do it again, it would be
- 33:59Speaker 5: done really well and I would so not be anxious,
- 34:03Speaker 5: and I would take.
- 34:05Speaker 2: All those things that you learn and be able to
- 34:07Speaker 2: implement that which is so powerful.
- 34:09Speaker 4: And again it shows that the.
- 34:11Speaker 2: Things that we go through are learned and we don't
- 34:13Speaker 2: forget what we've what we've been through.
- 34:15Speaker 4: To grow through as we grow through. Oh my gosh,
- 34:24Speaker 4: they just.
- 34:25Speaker 3: Call me over guys.
- 34:26Speaker 2: I feel like you can go and do anything right now.
- 34:29Speaker 3: I really love this, And there was something that you
- 34:32Speaker 3: just said that really resonated with me, Like I don't
- 34:35Speaker 3: want to fall back on something, I want to fall forward.
- 34:38Speaker 3: Why have I not thought of that before? How am
- 34:41Speaker 3: I going to fall forward into the next thing that
- 34:43Speaker 3: I'm going to do? And how am I going to
- 34:44Speaker 3: lean into that? And I really like that. I really
- 34:48Speaker 3: like this conversation and it just is for me a
- 34:51Speaker 3: really great mindset shift around being in debt and knowing
- 34:54Speaker 3: that you don't have to be ruled by your debt.
- 34:57Speaker 3: You can still have a life and you can still
- 35:00Speaker 3: enjoy things and dream about what the future looks like
- 35:03Speaker 3: and create. And I just think that so many people
- 35:06Speaker 3: think that their debt defines them. Have you ever felt
- 35:10Speaker 3: like your debt has defined you?
- 35:12Speaker 5: Absolutely? It's definitely like controlled my entire twenties, and it
- 35:18Speaker 5: like it made me feel like I was a person
- 35:21Speaker 5: that had constantly lived outside my means, which I was,
- 35:24Speaker 5: and I guess I tried to see where that stemmed from.
- 35:27Speaker 5: And it was definitely like growing up, we weren't like
- 35:30Speaker 5: a super wealthy family, but we kind of got everything
- 35:33Speaker 5: without question, Like there was four of us kids, and
- 35:35Speaker 5: whenever we needed something, you know, we got it. And
- 35:39Speaker 5: we always you know, got everything that we wanted for Christmas,
- 35:42Speaker 5: and we always worked and money was never a topic
- 35:45Speaker 5: at home. And when a brand car would come, never
- 35:48Speaker 5: know how we kind of got it, like it was.
- 35:50Speaker 4: But it I just kicked along somehow.
- 35:52Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 35:54Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 35:54Speaker 5: And then come when my parents broke up and I
- 35:57Speaker 5: was in with my dad and there was all this
- 35:58Speaker 5: debt and was all this drama. I was like, oh
- 35:59Speaker 5: my god. And you know, like he in saying that, though,
- 36:04Speaker 5: like I probably wouldn't have been able to still be
- 36:08Speaker 5: in debt and travel the country and run a business
- 36:10Speaker 5: if I didn't have my dad, Like say, Dad would
- 36:13Speaker 5: pay for my website. You know, Dad bought me a car,
- 36:15Speaker 5: Dad saved me, saved my house so many times throughout
- 36:19Speaker 5: my entire twenties. If I didn't have that, I probably
- 36:24Speaker 5: would be even more in debt. But at the same time,
- 36:26Speaker 5: it was kind of like, oh, here's the money, six
- 36:28Speaker 5: year problem, not okay, well, how can we stop you
- 36:31Speaker 5: from getting here again. It was kind of like there
- 36:33Speaker 5: was no putting. Yeah, it was just a band aid.
- 36:36Speaker 5: Here's some cash, pay for your website or here's some money.
- 36:40Speaker 4: Do this the poster which I guess kind of whim.
- 36:44Speaker 3: I guess some people could see that and go, wow,
- 36:46Speaker 3: that's entitled, But I don't know as like I just
- 36:50Speaker 3: you know, our parents often, you know, unfortunately this isn't
- 36:54Speaker 3: the case for everybody, but our parents often want the
- 36:56Speaker 3: best for us, and they often have absolutely, you know,
- 37:00Speaker 3: to just gift you things and fix things and give
- 37:02Speaker 3: a band aid to you, when in reality, like you know,
- 37:05Speaker 3: paying it off could have been very helpful in that moment,
- 37:08Speaker 3: or paying for a new website obviously really helped. But
- 37:11Speaker 3: also saying to you, all right, you know what money
- 37:14Speaker 3: diarist I was about to use the name, which I'm
- 37:17Speaker 3: not allowed to. We're going to not only pay this
- 37:20Speaker 3: off and get you out of it, but we're going
- 37:22Speaker 3: to stop you from doing it again. And I guess
- 37:24Speaker 3: that's why she's on the money exists. It's that conversation
- 37:28Speaker 3: around how do we stop you from doing it again?
- 37:30Speaker 3: Because you're not in trouble for doing it, like you're
- 37:32Speaker 3: not a bad person, we're not judging you for getting
- 37:35Speaker 3: into this situation. In fact, we put ourselves in your shoes.
- 37:39Speaker 3: We could probably see exactly how that came to be
- 37:43Speaker 3: yes with your experiences and the knowledge that you had. Like,
- 37:46Speaker 3: we're all just doing the best we can.
- 37:48Speaker 4: And trying to figure it out.
- 37:49Speaker 3: Yeah, we're just trying to figure it out. And like
- 37:51Speaker 3: some of us still haven't figured it out. Like I
- 37:54Speaker 3: think everybody puts me personally on a bit of a
- 37:56Speaker 3: pedestal and says, well, she must have it figured out.
- 37:59Speaker 3: I'm like no, Like, sometimes I have to take my
- 38:01Speaker 3: own advice and friends, it is hard. I don't want
- 38:05Speaker 3: to listen to Victoria's just crazy.
- 38:08Speaker 4: It's easy to give it.
- 38:10Speaker 3: Yeah, do as we say, not as we do, but
- 38:13Speaker 3: like that's just it, right, Like sometimes we just need
- 38:16Speaker 3: to step back and realize that it's not the situation
- 38:19Speaker 3: controlling us, it's us, and we can actually reframe that
- 38:23Speaker 3: situation into anything. And it sounds like you, my friend,
- 38:26Speaker 3: have done a really beautiful job of kind of reframing
- 38:29Speaker 3: it so that you're in a position of power as
- 38:31Speaker 3: opposed to and being the power that controls you.
- 38:35Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 38:36Speaker 4: Yeah, I love that.
- 38:38Speaker 3: I love that. We don't have heaps of time, But
- 38:41Speaker 3: I have a question, and I think that you know,
- 38:44Speaker 3: it might be a good place to leave it. A
- 38:47Speaker 3: lot of other people in our community are currently in
- 38:50Speaker 3: this position of struggle. They're in debt and things feel
- 38:53Speaker 3: like there's no light at the end of the tunnel.
- 38:55Speaker 3: What is your best piece of advice that you could
- 38:58Speaker 3: leave them with that is not going to make people
- 39:01Speaker 3: feel like we are on our own.
- 39:05Speaker 5: I think I've got two, and these are two that
- 39:08Speaker 5: really helped to ground me and make me feel like
- 39:12Speaker 5: I had it together even when I didn't. But the
- 39:15Speaker 5: first one is just to take each moment at a
- 39:18Speaker 5: time with your debt, not necessarily each day or each debt,
- 39:21Speaker 5: but literally each moment getting you to where you need
- 39:25Speaker 5: to be, and I guess facing them, and then your
- 39:29Speaker 5: gut is always right as well, like with anything, like
- 39:33Speaker 5: if I was feeling like funny, I guess about like
- 39:36Speaker 5: a situation that involves the money, and I knew I
- 39:39Speaker 5: didn't have the money, but I'd commit to it anyway,
- 39:41Speaker 5: Like I knew I shouldn't have done that, So I
- 39:43Speaker 5: guess just really listening, you know, to your gut. And yeah,
- 39:47Speaker 5: just taking each moment at a time and seeing an accountant,
- 39:51Speaker 5: finding a really really good accountant, and before you even
- 39:55Speaker 5: think about opening a business, just ask what you need
- 39:57Speaker 5: to do beforehand.
- 39:59Speaker 4: Because that was good stage.
- 40:01Speaker 5: Yes, yeah, it's just what you need to do beforehand,
- 40:04Speaker 5: I guess, and listen to Shoes on the Money because right, guys,
- 40:11Speaker 5: I'm so woke fun now. Just yeah, making sure that
- 40:16Speaker 5: you see on accountant first. Absolutely, I wish I did
- 40:20Speaker 5: that after.
- 40:22Speaker 2: I hope that people will listen to this and feel
- 40:24Speaker 2: really empowered because I definitely do mean too. Yeah, like
- 40:28Speaker 2: leaving this here and feeling that that way that you know,
- 40:31Speaker 2: it doesn't matter where you're at, tomorrow can always be better. Absolutely, No,
- 40:38Speaker 2: there's just always better things coming. And I love your
- 40:40Speaker 2: attitude and it sounds like you've been through a really
- 40:44Speaker 2: crazy journey up until now. But like you said, you're
- 40:47Speaker 2: twenty seven. Better things are coming and you've got a girlfriend.
- 40:51Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 40:52Speaker 3: I love that. I'm so sad. That's all we have
- 40:55Speaker 3: time for that. Oh you're amazing, Thank you.
- 40:59Speaker 5: Thank you for having me lady.
- 41:01Speaker 3: No, of course, But just before we head off, we'd
- 41:04Speaker 3: like to acknowledge and pay respect to Australia's Aboriginal and
- 41:07Speaker 3: Torrestory Islander people's the traditional custodians at the lands, the
- 41:11Speaker 3: waterways and the skies all across Australia. We thank you
- 41:15Speaker 3: for sharing and for caring for the land on which
- 41:17Speaker 3: we are able to learn. We pay respects to elders
- 41:19Speaker 3: past and present, and we share our friendship and our kindness.
- 41:23Speaker 2: The advice shared on She's on the Money is general
- 41:25Speaker 2: in nature and does not consider your individual circumstances.
- 41:29Speaker 4: She's on the Money exists.
- 41:30Speaker 2: Purely for educational purposes and should not be relied upon
- 41:33Speaker 2: to make an investment or financial decision, and we promise.

- 41:51Speaker 3: you're allegended.
- 41:52Speaker 2: I've got nothing else on, so I might as well.
- 41:54Speaker 3: John to man, it's so kind of you. Yeah, that's fine,
