Transcript
- 0:00Today is January 1st and we're going to talk about your goals.
- 0:05And the reason I'm doing this is because every January the same
- 0:10thing happens. We set goals with the best
- 0:13intentions. We're fired up, we're energized,
- 0:16we're motivated. We promised ourselves that this
- 0:19year it's going to be different. But then real life shows up,
- 0:26work gets crazy, schedules get messy, your kids, you, a parent
- 0:32get sick, your energy drops, and somehow the goals fade into the
- 0:39background once again. And here's the part that people
- 0:43tend to miss. Goals don't fail because of
- 0:46laziness or a lack of discipline or knowledge.
- 0:49They fail because they aren't supported by the right systems
- 0:54that are going to help you. Plan for the deviations.
- 0:57Plan for the disruptions. So we're going to walk through
- 1:01this ten step process for creating an unshakable goal.
- 1:06Most of us around this time of year, we think about all the
- 1:09things we want to do and then we try to do them all at once and
- 1:13we burn out by February or March if you're lucky.
- 1:17And so we're going to do is get clarity on what's actually
- 1:19important, focus on those things and specifically the goal that's
- 1:24going to make everything else easier.
- 1:26All you need for this is a notebook and a pen or a pencil.
- 1:29And I'm going to take you through this process step by
- 1:32step. I encourage you to stop
- 1:34throughout various periods of this because I'm going to jump
- 1:36through it quickly. But the rules for this are
- 1:39simple. Allocate 30 to 60 minutes at
- 1:42least to do this. You are not allowed to have your
- 1:45phone nearby you. No distractions.
- 1:47Find a quiet place in your house or go to the library to get this
- 1:50done and then just grab a beverage of your choice because
- 1:54we're going to get to work. So step one is you're going to
- 1:57reflect and ask yourself, if I wasn't held back by anything
- 2:01whatsoever, what would I want to accomplish?
- 2:05And then you were just going to spew out everything that comes
- 2:08to mind. Don't worry about specifics or
- 2:10filtering or how it's written out yet.
- 2:13Just write down everything that you may want to accomplish.
- 2:17Let your brain do the work and just have your hand follow.
- 2:21After that, we're going to do a prioritization and a filtering
- 2:25process. Eliminate any goals that truly
- 2:28aren't priorities to you right now.
- 2:30You're going to also eliminate and cross out any of the ones
- 2:33that don't fit this SMART criteria.
- 2:36So they need to be specific, measurable, attainable,
- 2:39relevant, and time bound. For example, say you want to
- 2:43lose some weight. So if you have lose weight
- 2:46written down, we have to make it much more specific and
- 2:49measurable so we can say is I want to lose 20 lbs or encourage
- 2:54you to frame it positively and say I want to weigh this much
- 3:00has to be attainable. So you have to understand that
- 3:02losing 1% of your body weight each week is probably the most
- 3:06you can do without compromising muscle mass or losing your
- 3:09energy. You make it time bound and then
- 3:12it needs to be relevant to you. So it really needs to be
- 3:15important and we'll do more on that in the next step.
- 3:18Now Step 3, you're going to evoke your why.
- 3:22So for each of those remaining goals, you are going to write
- 3:25down why it's important to you. You want to take it deeper, as
- 3:29deep as you can, get into your own emotions and ask yourself
- 3:32what is the real root of this? So again, if it's to lose
- 3:37weight, for example, and ask yourself, well, why?
- 3:40Is it because you want to be more confident in that that
- 3:44business outfit? Is it you want to lose that
- 3:46weight so that you can be more active with your kids or
- 3:49grandkids? Is it you want to lose weight so
- 3:51that you look better naked? Whatever it is, I want you to go
- 3:55deeper into those goals and evoke the why.
- 3:59A great way to do this is to imagine accomplishing these
- 4:02goals and ask yourself how will accomplishing this change how I
- 4:06feel day-to-day? What impact is accomplishing
- 4:10this goal going to have on my life and how I feel over the
- 4:12next 1510 or more years? Ask what freedoms will it
- 4:18provide or what will it unlock for you?
- 4:21Maybe it's going to let you take that trip to Italy and go on
- 4:24that two day hike excursion you saw.
- 4:26Whatever it is, write those things down.
- 4:28Lastly, while we want this to be centered around ourselves, you
- 4:32can also ask who else in my inner circle is going to benefit
- 4:36from me accomplishing this goal? Will efficiency at work go up?
- 4:39Will your spouse benefit from this?
- 4:42Will your kids benefit from this?
- 4:44Those important things to ask, I want you to repeat this process
- 4:47until you've narrowed that list down to three things at most.
- 4:52So you're going to continue filtering until you've narrowed
- 4:55it down. Three things.
- 4:57You have to focus on one to three and do those really well.
- 5:02And if you can do that, I promise it's going to make
- 5:04everything else easier, which takes us to step four.
- 5:09Step 4 is to identify your Keystone goal.
- 5:13What's the one goal that makes everything else easier?
- 5:16Which of these things would be so life changing to accomplish
- 5:20that you couldn't be permanently proud of yourself after
- 5:23achieving it? What's going to give me the
- 5:25highest return on the energy invested into pursuing this
- 5:29goal? What's the one that stands out
- 5:31the most? That is your Keystone goal, and
- 5:35that's the thing that you're going to focus on with the next
- 5:373-6 or 12 months. Now, once we've established that
- 5:41keystone goal, we're going to Step 5, which is to break that
- 5:46keystone goal down into short, mid, and long term targets to
- 5:50help manage expectations. Identifying if that keystone
- 5:53goal is short, mid or long term target.
- 5:56Short, just two to 12 weeks, midterm 3 to 12 months, long
- 6:01term, 12 or more months. So say for example, your
- 6:06keystone goal is to lose 50 lbs this coming year.
- 6:10What you then want to do is turn that 12 month goal and break it
- 6:13down into a short and midterm target as well so you have
- 6:16something to connect the dots. So say you want to lose that 50
- 6:20lbs in 12 months. Then maybe in the first three
- 6:23you say I'm going to lose 20 and then by the six month mark
- 6:26you'll have a lot of 40 so you can see how on or off target you
- 6:29are and to adjust accordingly. Step 6.
- 6:34And this is where most goals will fail.
- 6:36We are going to pre identify the biggest potential obstacles that
- 6:40are going to come up over the next year.
- 6:42What's held you back in the past?
- 6:44Are your circumstances the same now or are they different?
- 6:48What's the one thing that gets in the way of your progress more
- 6:52than anything else? If I just didn't have blank, I'd
- 6:56be successful. So you're going to write those
- 6:59barriers down for that short, mid and long term target.
- 7:04Take your time in this step because this is the one thing
- 7:07that people fail to put into their plan.
- 7:10Goals do not fail because of willpower, discipline.
- 7:14They fail because they don't plan for the deviations, the
- 7:17distractions, the disruptions that are going to happen.
- 7:21It's not a matter of if they happen in a matter of when.
- 7:24Now, after you've written those things down, we're on the step
- 7:267, which is to strategize and plan.
- 7:30So for each of those barriers, you're going to write down what
- 7:33you need to overcome them. The skills, the knowledge, the
- 7:37resources, the support. What has helped you stay
- 7:40consistent and successful in the past to work around these
- 7:44things? What do you need to confidently
- 7:46overcome those challenges when they present themselves?
- 7:49What are you able and willing to give up in order to be
- 7:54successful? You can prep yourself for these
- 7:56things in advance. You will not be shocked when
- 7:59they arrive. You plan for them.
- 8:02You know what to do. It's part of the process.
- 8:04It's almost like you're eager for them to present themselves
- 8:08so that you can implement this system and work around them to
- 8:11stay consistent. Now, step 8, we're going to
- 8:14rally support. So we're going to identify the
- 8:17people who are going to provide unconditional support and
- 8:20accountability. That's a writer downer.
- 8:24I'll say that again. Unconditional support and
- 8:28accountability. This might not be your spouse.
- 8:31This might not be your BFF who has your best interests in mind
- 8:36over their own, who can give you the tough love when you need it.
- 8:41If you're OK telling this person no, and sometimes that is your
- 8:45spouse, that might not be the right person to rally in a
- 8:48support team. Who can you count on to provide
- 8:52the unwavering support when those things get tough?
- 8:55And here's the pro tip. You're going to call or text
- 8:58them immediately after this exercise to tell them what
- 9:00you're doing, to tell them why it's important to you and ask
- 9:04for their help. Ask for their support and get a
- 9:07commitment from them to be that person for you.
- 9:10If you pick the right people, they'll do it without a doubt.
- 9:14Now, step 9 is we're going to write our power statement.
- 9:20This is a single powerful statement that defines your goal
- 9:23and encapsulates every part of this exercise.
- 9:26Your keystone goal, why it's important to you, how you'll
- 9:29benefit from accomplishing it, what you're willing to do to
- 9:33accomplish it, a realistic timeline, how you'll overcome
- 9:37those specific challenges, and who's going to help support you
- 9:40to keep it consistent. This is the thing you're going
- 9:43to refer back to when you need the motivation when things get
- 9:47tough because we can't rely on that motivation all the time.
- 9:50It is fleeting. It is not reliable.
- 9:53We need something better. Here is how to write your power
- 9:57statements. All you have to do is fill in
- 9:59the blanks from the previous exercises into the statement and
- 10:02you've got it done. It goes like this.
- 10:05By accomplishing this goal, I will take these actions so that
- 10:11I can achieve these benefits. This is important to me because
- 10:17here's your why. Biggest barriers can't stop me
- 10:21because I'll handle it by using these strategies and I'll have
- 10:27name of my supporters supporting me through this process.
- 10:31That is your power statement and you are going to write it down,
- 10:34make it real and make it as visible as possible.
- 10:37You can make a note in your phone and create a widget on
- 10:39your home screen. You can put it in your car, put
- 10:42it on the mirror in the bathroom, put it at work, at
- 10:45your desk, wherever you need to see it, to make it as visible
- 10:49and easy to remember as possible.
- 10:51Life is too busy to try to store this up in our head all the
- 10:54time. We have to put it out there and
- 10:57use it as a visual reminder of why we started doing this to
- 11:01begin with. And step 10 is we are going to
- 11:04review and adjust. The last thing that you and I
- 11:08want to happen is to go through this exercise, take the time,
- 11:11pour our motion and do it, and then have it fade into the
- 11:14background until next January again.
- 11:17So we're going to set a quarterly check in process where
- 11:21you're going to have it on your Google Calendar.
- 11:23You're going to block off 30 minutes and you're going to ask
- 11:26yourself these things, what's working, what feels heavy, what
- 11:32needs adjusting and what should I stop pretending we'll get to?
- 11:38This should have some sort of metric attached, should have
- 11:40something that you can come back to and assess.
- 11:42Am I on or off target? And what do I need to adjust so
- 11:46I can keep moving forward? So you've made it through Step
- 11:5010. You have it all set up.
- 11:52Here's some bonus tips to make it stick.
- 11:54One set weekly reminders every Sunday, get your head back into
- 11:58the game. Maybe set yourself a weekly
- 12:00reminder, your phone to go off. It says hey, remember this, we
- 12:03set this goal. Next is to pre schedule those
- 12:06key actions. So in order to be successful,
- 12:09you must treat your workouts, your sleep, your nutrition like
- 12:13meetings. These are the meetings with
- 12:15yourself for you. It's the most important meeting
- 12:19on your calendar. So make sure you treat it just
- 12:22like you would other important meetings in your life. 3 is to
- 12:25rally the support people that you wrote down previously
- 12:28because accountability will beat motivation 100% of the time.
- 12:33Next is to use habit stacking. So anchor some of these new
- 12:36behaviors that are necessary to something you're already doing.
- 12:39So an example of habit stacking is getting your workout gear put
- 12:43together as part of your bedtime routine.
- 12:45You get your bag ready to make it that much easier to get out
- 12:47of the front door. Next, to keep it visible, you're
- 12:50going to put that power statement everywhere you need it
- 12:53to so that you're constantly reminded of what we did here
- 12:56today. Your goals, your dreams, and
- 12:59this power statement should not live in a drawer.
- 13:02And lastly, celebrate every win, big or small, When you hit those
- 13:07weekly marks, those quarterly marks, celebrate those.
- 13:11The brain loves rewards. Reward yourself with a new set
- 13:16of workout gear, a new pair of running shoes.
- 13:18Make sure we reward our brain for it because that's going to
- 13:21help create those reward systems in your head.
- 13:23They're going to make this so much easier over the next three
- 13:27to 12 months. Now that's it team.
- 13:30You've got everything you need. So now do it.
- 13:34I can give you all the information in the world on how
- 13:37to do this properly, but the thing most people lack is
- 13:40implementation. So if you want to take this
- 13:42seriously, mark on your calendar a time this week to go through
- 13:46this process. Follow the rules, make sure
- 13:48there's no distractions, there's no phones.
- 13:51Really dive into this. Treat this as seriously as it
- 13:55should be treated, because you were important.
- 13:58What you want to achieve is important.
- 14:00We're here to help you out, but you've got to advocate for
- 14:03yourself and to the absolute best way to do it.
- 14:06Reach out if you need help, because your coaches and I are
- 14:09all here to help you do this and we've got your back.
- 14:13Now the only thing left to do. Get to work.
- 14:17Happy January and we'll see you guys on the next one.
