- 0:00Doing Marriage Well for October 26, 2026 The Tear System Figure out what deserves
- 0:06your time and energy Lori is slowly recovering from surgery.
- 0:10She's been down about three months total, and caring for her has significantly altered what I do.
- 0:15All this has caused us to think about what really matters. What is important?
- 0:19What is nice, but second or third tier?
- 0:22As we move forward, we are not looking to get back to normal.
- 0:25We want to find a new normal.
- 0:27This will involve discussion and prayer and probably some trial and error It's
- 0:31a good thing and it's one of the ways we see God bringing good out of bad,
- 0:36It's human nature to stick with what we know and what we usually do Inertia
- 0:40is a powerful thing and we usually bow to it without even being aware we have done so,
- 0:45If life has not recently done something to disrupt your everyday routine It
- 0:48would be a good idea to think through what you do and don't do.
- 0:52Are you doing all the first and second tier things?
- 0:55Are you doing some third and fourth tier things when that time and energy should be used elsewhere?
- 1:00First, you have to decide what really matters. And that's not always as easy as it sounds.
- 1:05I like tiers rather than highest to lowest lists, as it saves a lot of unnecessary work.
- 1:10Some of what's in tier one is mundane. The last three months,
- 1:14I had to pay the bills, buy food, do dishes and laundry, as well as basic housework.
- 1:19Additionally, we didn't really
- 1:20expect it to be fed. But there were ways to make some of that easier.
- 1:24I bought some paper plates, something we don't normally do. That cut down on dishes nicely.
- 1:30My son took over feeding the pigs because my mornings had become difficult.
- 1:34I kept doing the chickens and turkeys as they could be done in the afternoon.
- 1:37Lori and I continued to talk, and about more than just her situation.
- 1:41We continued to be intimate, with effort. Where do you hurt now?
- 1:45Can I hug you this way? What parts of your body can I massage?
- 1:48Because touch is a first-tier thing for both of us, we made it work.
- 1:52Taking the grandkids on Sunday night is normally very important to us,
- 1:55but was not reasonable in this season, so it was temporarily suspended.
- 1:59It remains a second-tier thing, and we will get back to it when we can.
- 2:03At first, it may be for a shorter time or every other week.
- 2:06Thinking all or nothing is a trap to be avoided. When you can't do something
- 2:10as you would like, find a way to do it at least some.
- 2:13Contact with friends has continued, mostly by text. A few times when Lori fell
- 2:18up to being alone, she encouraged me to go to church, a small group, or coffee.
- 2:22And she made a couple of very short appearances at her Tuesday and Friday coffee groups.
- 2:27Some things are all or nothing, but often we can find a way to do something partway.
- 2:31Ignoring friends for three months would have left us with a lot of relationship
- 2:34repair When did you last work through what really matters to you?
- 2:38If it's been a while, there will be things that are now less important than
- 2:41they once were because of life changes Other things are, or should be, more important now,
- 2:47And there may be things that you still do out of habit that really don't matter
- 2:50anymore This is Paul, and putting your spouse in Tier 1 is doing marriage well.
