Transcript
- 0:00Today's episode is brought to you by your new friend telling you that she loves
- 0:04you for the first time. It's very underrated.
- 0:07Now I find a perfect-looking specimen. Trump to J.D.
- 0:11Vance during a speech the other day about how J.D. Vance recently lost a lot of weight.
- 0:17Insert theme song here. This is the Daily Starcast. I give you the news,
- 0:21it may be a laugh. I'm Lindsay Vernick and it's April 7th, 2026.
- 0:25Just a heads up, I am now officially back to work and I am going to keep the podcast going.
- 0:31I work about anywhere from 10 to like 14 hour days, so the podcast may be a little short some days,
- 0:39but just know that I am still giving it my all and I am going to do my best
- 0:45to keep the Daily Starcast every weekday.
- 0:48Oh, and while I'm also talking about this, please make sure that you send this
- 0:51to a friend or a family member or somebody that you recently hooked up with, because, like, why not?
- 0:58In real news, Trump has given Iran a very specific deadline to reopen the Strait
- 1:03of Hormuz, which is basically one of the most important oil routes in the world,
- 1:07where he's threatening to wipe out their infrastructure. And not vaguely.
- 1:12He literally said Iran could be taken out in one night and sent back to the Stone Age. Nice.
- 1:18But also in the same breath, he's also saying Iran wants a deal and is actively
- 1:22participating in negotiations.
- 1:24Iran responded by saying if the U.S. attacks civilian infrastructure like bridges
- 1:29or power plants, they retaliate in a crushing way.
- 1:32That doesn't sound very cute, does it? At the same time, though,
- 1:36they sent over a 10-point peace proposal, which all very much which sounds like
- 1:40a very similar fight that my sister and I have frequently.
- 1:43The peace proposal includes ending the war permanently, guarantees they won't
- 1:48be attacked again, lifting all sanctions, and reopening the strait.
- 1:52And then, slight twist, they also want to co-manage the strait and charge tolls.
- 1:56So it's like, let's stop the war and also start a business together.
- 2:00Meanwhile, on the ground, things are not exactly calming down.
- 2:04Israel killed another top Iranian commander.
- 2:07Air strikes hit Tehran, including a major university, and missiles and drones
- 2:11are being fired across Israel and toward the UAE.
- 2:14And global fuel prices are rising because the strait is still disrupted.
- 2:19So while leaders are talking about peace, everyone else is still actively fighting.
- 2:23There's a real-life castaway moment happening right now, but with a cruise ship.
- 2:28A luxury cruise ship called the MV Fiji Princess ran on top of a reef near a
- 2:33tally island off Fiji, and it's the exact same island where Tom Hanks and castaway was stranded.
- 2:41Literally the same island. The ship was carrying 30 passengers and 31 crew members
- 2:46when it hit a reef, an uninhabited island in the Manuka Islands.
- 2:52The ship ended up getting stuck and taking on water and really got damaged,
- 2:56but unlike Tom Hanks, everyone got rescued pretty quickly.
- 3:00All 30 passengers were safely evacuated and brought back to the mainland along with most of the crew.
- 3:05So no one had to build a shelter out of driftwood or have emotional conversations
- 3:09with a volleyball, which is always a win.
- 3:12Now, here's the serious part about it. The ship was carrying about 20,000 liters
- 3:17of diesel fuel, and officials are working to remove it to prevent an environmental disaster.
- 3:22The concern is that if the fuel leaks, it could damage the surrounding coral
- 3:27reefs, which if you've ever seen them, are kind of the whole appeal of the place.
- 3:31The cruise company said the ship likely hit treble because of a sudden severe
- 3:35storm that pushed the anchor into the reef.
- 3:37And this whole area is actually a really big tourist hotspot.
- 3:41It's known for crystal clear water, marine life, and shipwreck diving.
- 3:45It's also been used for filming shows like Survivor and obviously Castaway,
- 3:49which has now achieved a full circle moment.
- 3:52The Trump administration just made
- 3:54a move that's already raising a lot of eyebrows. I mean, what else is new?
- 3:58They've started terminating multiple civil rights settlements that were designed
- 4:02to protect transgender students in schools.
- 4:04These weren't random policies. These were agreements made over years under both
- 4:09Democratic and Republican administrations to ensure schools weren't discriminating
- 4:13against students based on gender identity.
- 4:16And now this federal government is basically saying those agreements are over.
- 4:21The Education Department says that there's no precedent for this,
- 4:24meaning, like, there isn't something that's typically done here.
- 4:27Normally, once a civil rights settlement is reached, it just stays in place,
- 4:32because obviously, why wouldn't it?
- 4:34But now, schools are being told to choose.
- 4:37So, either follow the federal government's new interpretation of the law,
- 4:42or follow the state's laws, or potentially just get caught in the middle of both.
- 4:46This move is a part of a broader push from the administration to enforce an
- 4:50executive order that recognizes only biological sex assigned at birth and to
- 4:54roll back protections tied to gender identity.
- 4:57At least 40 civil rights investigations have been opened into schools providing
- 5:02protections for transgender students, and the administration has also sued multiple
- 5:07states over policies that allow transgender athletes to participate in school sports.
- 5:12This is obviously like five major steps backwards. The federal government has
- 5:17never gone back and canceled existing civil rights settlement like this. Again, go figure.
- 5:24Advocates for transgender students say it sends a chilling message,
- 5:28essentially signaling that these students are being targeted.
- 5:31No way. Again, go figure.
- 5:34On the other side, administration officials are framing it as enforcing the
- 5:39law and restoring what they call common sense.
- 5:42Maybe on tomorrow's episode, I'll talk about how we're actually now living in
- 5:46the upside-down world of stranger things.
- 5:49So some school districts are now stuck in the middle of all this.
- 5:52Some even say they haven't even been officially notified yet.
- 5:55And others are saying that they don't plan to change anything. They don't care.
- 5:59And a few are already being told to reverse policies or risk losing federal
- 6:03funding, which is obviously a really hard decision to make.
- 6:07In Lindsay life I had my first day of
- 6:10work yesterday I'm a producer on a new show
- 6:13I'm talent producing for the first time which
- 6:16means that I'm just a producer in charge of talent
- 6:19and only talent which I've never done before so I
- 6:23had to prepare the dressing rooms for the cast members to come in and I tried
- 6:27to put together a lot of those like hanging racks for your clothes and stuff
- 6:32from Target and by that I mean I tried to put a lot of wardrobes together but
- 6:38it was really hard and then I had to ask a lot of PAs to come in and help me.
- 6:42Lindsay Lessons, a lesson by Lins. Traveling 45 minutes in New York City is
- 6:48so much different than traveling 45 minutes in the car on the highway.
- 6:54Cooking tip of the day. Tofu dipped in baba ganoush is very yummy.
- 6:59Feedback, comments, questions, and ice Jewish by looking for a date,
