- 0:00Sometimes the smartest thing I do for my Parkinson's is the
- 0:03exact opposite of what I'm told to do.
- 0:06You ever have those days where you just think, you know what?
- 0:10Not today. Parkinson's.
- 0:12I feel like breaking the rules. You know what?
- 0:15Maybe you skip physio. Maybe you eat the doughnut.
- 0:18Maybe you sit on the couch instead of walking circles
- 0:20around it. Yeah, that type of rebellion.
- 0:25Well, here's the truth. Sometimes breaking the rules is
- 0:29the only thing that keeps us human.
- 0:31So today we're talking about the Parkinson's Rebellion.
- 0:35Why it's OK, sometimes necessary to bend the rules, skip the
- 0:39perfection and give yourself permission to live again.
- 0:43And I promise by the end you're going to see that a little
- 0:46rebellion might actually be the most therapeutic thing that you
- 0:51can do. Welcome to Living with
- 0:53Parkinson's the good the. Bad and the reality.
- 0:57Real talk, real life, real community with Bryce Perry.
- 1:02Let's begin. Everyone, welcome back to Living
- 1:06with Parkinson's, the good, the bad and the reality.
- 1:09If you're new here, I'm Bryce and around here we we talk about
- 1:13the real stuff. We don't sugarcoat Parkinson's
- 1:16and we don't pretend everyday is motivational poster material.
- 1:20If you like honest talk, a little laughter and the and the
- 1:24kind of hope that actually holds up in real life, then hit that
- 1:27subscribe button. It's free.
- 1:29It helps the channel grow. It tells YouTube that
- 1:31Parkinson's stories matter. OK, it's a little rebel time.
- 1:38If you feel like being a rebel today, say hashtag rebel.
- 1:42Hashtag rebel in the comments and we'll get going here.
- 1:46You know, living with Parkinson's comes with a lot of
- 1:49rules. Take your meds exactly on time,
- 1:52exercise every day, eat clean, avoid stress, sleep well, stay
- 1:57positive. You know that's 6 rules before
- 2:00breakfast. And sure, they're all important.
- 2:04But here's the problem. When life becomes one big
- 2:06checklist, you stop living and you start managing yourself.
- 2:11You know, I used to think discipline would save me until
- 2:15it actually started to exhaust me.
- 2:18Because when every choice feels like an obligation, you lose
- 2:21that little spark that makes life worth doing.
- 2:25And there's actual science behind this.
- 2:27You know your brain needs novelty.
- 2:30Dopamine isn't just a movement chemical, it's also the
- 2:33curiosity chemical. When every day looks the same,
- 2:37dopamine production actually drops further.
- 2:40So a little rebellion, something unexpected can jump start
- 2:44motivation. Wow, drop a comment.
- 2:48If you've ever felt like doing you ever felt like doing
- 2:51everything right actually made you feel worse.
- 2:54You're not lazy, you're human. Love to hear that in the
- 2:56comments. Love to hear that in the
- 2:59comments. And if you've been there, done
- 3:00it, just put hashtag. Doing it right is like doing it
- 3:04wrong. OK, now there is a good kind of
- 3:09rule breaking. There's actually two kinds of
- 3:12rebellion, the kind that hurts you and the kind that heals you.
- 3:16The bad rebellion is when you ignore meds, push your limits,
- 3:20or pretend symptoms don't exist. The good rebellion is when you
- 3:24break the mental rules that keep you trapped.
- 3:27It's like deciding today I'm not tracking steps, but I'm going to
- 3:32track smiles. Or I'm skipping therapy but I'm
- 3:36going to watch a comedy instead. Or I'm not cleaning the kitchen,
- 3:40that's a good one to break, but I'm actually going to dance in
- 3:43my kitchen because sometimes joy is the treatment.
- 3:49And guess what? There's science behind that too.
- 3:52Did you know that positive emotions release endorphins that
- 3:56help regulate pain, mood, and even motor function?
- 3:59So rebellion isn't neglect, it's neurological self-care.
- 4:04OK, in the comments, what's 1 good rebellion you've pulled off
- 4:08lately? Share it.
- 4:10And guess what? You get to share it guilt free.
- 4:13OK, let's get personal. Let me tell you about one of my
- 4:17rebellions lately that backfired and what it taught me, which is
- 4:21way more important than what it actually what actually happened.
- 4:24But you know, a few weeks ago I was at an event, I was
- 4:26exhausted, jet lagged and I was running on fumes.
- 4:30Every voice in my head said, go to bed early, hydrate, follow
- 4:34the routine. And another voice, the
- 4:37rebellious 1, you know that one said, Nah, you've earned it.
- 4:42You've earned some coffee and some late night hockey
- 4:45highlights. So I stayed up.
- 4:49Now Fast forward a few hours and that led to the the hotel
- 4:54incident. And if you're a regular viewer,
- 4:57you've heard the story. You've heard it last week, I
- 4:59think I told you. 2 guys shaking me awake.
- 5:02Carmen on speakerphone, alarms blaring.
- 5:06Lesson learned. Oh, yeah.
- 5:08Oh, yeah. But also, I learned that
- 5:10rebellion comes with responsibility.
- 5:14See, breaking rules doesn't mean throwing them away.
- 5:17It means knowing which ones serve you and which ones will
- 5:20suffocate you. How about you?
- 5:24What's one rule that you realize that you were following just
- 5:28because you felt you had to, not because it helped?
- 5:32Put that in the comments. That will help somebody, I
- 5:34promise you. Now there's a thing called that
- 5:39I call actually the power of intentional rebellion.
- 5:44OK, Intentional rebellion means choosing joy on purpose.
- 5:48It's saying I'm skipping the workout because I need rest, or
- 5:53I'm eating dessert because I've been good all week, or I'm
- 5:57ignoring my To Do List because life's short.
- 6:00That little spark of permission resets your brain's chemistry.
- 6:04It tells your nervous system, hey, we're still in charge here.
- 6:10And you'll never believe it, but there's science behind that too.
- 6:14And if you, if you're surprised by that, give a, give this thing
- 6:16a thumbs up right here. All right, Well, this what, this
- 6:19is what it says. Studies show that perceived
- 6:22control lowers cortisol and improves motor performance in
- 6:26Parkinson's patients. English translation.
- 6:31A sense of autonomy literally makes your body move better.
- 6:36That one. That blows me away.
- 6:38So give yourself permission right now.
- 6:41Right now, what are you going to rebel against this week?
- 6:44Just pick something. One thing, put it in the
- 6:46comments. And Speaking of rebellion, care
- 6:50partners have their own version of it.
- 6:52And that leads us right into Carmen's care partner Corner.
- 6:56And let's hear and let's head into and hear what Carmen has to
- 7:00say about this topic. Here's the thing.
- 7:03Their partners get rule overload too.
- 7:06We're told how to support, how to monitor, what to encourage,
- 7:11what to say, what not to say. And it gets exhausting.
- 7:16Sometimes my rebellion is just saying I'm not fixing it.
- 7:19Today I let Bryce handle something his way, even if it
- 7:23takes 10 times longer. No OK.
- 7:27Other days my rebellion is sneaking out for coffee or
- 7:30turning my phone off for an hour.
- 7:33Because if if I don't rebel once in a while, I start to resent
- 7:37the routine care partners. Give yourself permission to be
- 7:42imperfect. Give yourself permission to
- 7:45rebel once in a while. Your loved 1 doesn't need a
- 7:48superhero. They need a human.
- 7:51And sometimes the best way to love someone with Parkinson's is
- 7:55to stop managing every moment. I almost, I almost wanted to
- 8:01say, can I get that in writing or on video?
- 8:03But I guess I do. I'm just teasing.
- 8:06You see, rebellion's contagious. And in this case, that's a good
- 8:11thing because the more human we act, the more human this disease
- 8:16will let us feel. All right, let's end with five
- 8:21rebellions worth trying this week, and maybe pick one.
- 8:25Maybe pick 2 if you feel like a big rebel, real rebel, pick all
- 8:285. But if you can't think of them,
- 8:31think of these ones. Number one, rest without guilt.
- 8:35If your body says stop, then you listen.
- 8:38Resting isn't quitting, it's recalibrating #2 laugh when it's
- 8:44inappropriate. You spill your drink, you freeze
- 8:46in a doorway or you drop the phone.
- 8:48Laugh anyway. It confuses the disease and it
- 8:52resets your brain. Here's a really good one.
- 8:55I like this one. Number three, say no to should
- 8:59any sentence that starts with I should drop that and replace it
- 9:05with I choose two. All right, I should replace that
- 9:10with I choose two. OK #4 celebrate something small.
- 9:17Got dressed faster. Remembered your meds.
- 9:20You know what that's worth a victory lap.
- 9:22And you need to do that this week and #5 ask for help before
- 9:27you desperately need it. Rebellion isn't isolation, it's
- 9:31knowing when to surrender with style.
- 9:35OK, which one of those five were you going to claim this week?
- 9:39Or maybe all five? Comment below.
- 9:41Let's start a rebellion in the comments.
- 9:45All right, I got the prices are coming right up, but I just want
- 9:47to say something really quick. The Parkinson boot camp, OK, it
- 9:54sold out. We I'd sold it out.
- 9:56It sold out right away. And we have people going now
- 9:58into their second week taking the Parkinson's like I've got
- 10:02Parkinson's. What now boot camp now it's not
- 10:05just for newly diagnosed it's for anybody that wants to go
- 10:09deeper into this. I start right from the from
- 10:12diagnosis mindset going taking you through mindset to meds to
- 10:17actually teaching you my exact exact way that I look for trends
- 10:24the way I take my meds what I take how I take them anyway,
- 10:27it's six weeks it's and you know I just have to say this.
- 10:30It's going so well and if like if you're, if you're taking it,
- 10:34I hope you're enjoying it. If you are, let us know in the
- 10:36comments, let others know. But if you thought about it and
- 10:39you didn't sign up or you're thinking about it or you're
- 10:41looking now you want to, you want to go, something goes
- 10:44deeper. I'm going to open up around
- 10:462:00. I'm going to open it up today.
- 10:49OK. The link is in the description
- 10:50below. Again, there'll be limited
- 10:52capacity because I'm going to do it with you.
- 10:56It's six weeks with me. It's recorded videos that you do
- 10:59at your own pace during the week, right at the very
- 11:02beginning, at the halfway mark, and at the end.
- 11:04Every two weeks I come live with you.
- 11:06We do a live call, just you and our group.
- 11:10I go through questions, I talk through it, I walk you through
- 11:14it. It's something I wish I would
- 11:16had in the first six years of my diagnosis.
- 11:20Anyway, I just, I just, I'm so excited by it because it's so
- 11:23good and I took a lot of time to do this and I want you to come
- 11:26with me. So come to boot camp Round 2
- 11:29starting in January. But you have to reserve your
- 11:32seat now because once they're full, they're full, OK?
- 11:35There's only so many of me. I can't do giant groups.
- 11:37I try to keep everything small so it's intimate so that we can
- 11:40do this together. So you're not alone.
- 11:42Anyway, that's just me to you. It's open.
- 11:45It's open now. Reserve your seat.
- 11:47You can just put a deposit down if you want, just to hold it.
- 11:50And we get going in January. OK.
- 11:54All right, You made it to the Brycism, so thank you for
- 11:56sticking with me through that. So here's the Brycism for today.
- 12:00All right? Sometimes the bravest thing you
- 12:04can do with Parkinson's is to break the rules that everybody
- 12:09else swears by. All right, there you go.
- 12:13But here's your challenge this week.
- 12:14Break one rule. Do it intentionally.
- 12:17Eat the dessert, skip the checklist, Nap instead of
- 12:20hustle. And then tell me how it felt.
- 12:23Because rebellion, when done right, isn't defiance, It's self
- 12:27respect. All right, what's your favorite
- 12:31Parkinson rebellion? The funnier the stranger, the
- 12:33better. Let me know because I might just
- 12:35feature it in an upcoming episode.
- 12:37And if you want to go deeper, you want to go harder, you want
- 12:39to go stronger, you want to get involved, you want to get going,
- 12:43join the inner circle. It's growing and it's growing
- 12:45fast. But you know what?
- 12:47There's there's solo, the solo journey, those that are doing
- 12:50Parkinson's alone, without care partners.
- 12:52There's a group in there now that are just talking about
- 12:54things, discussing these podcasts after we air, there's a
- 12:58care partners group. You name it, we got it.
- 13:02It's growing. Come join us.
- 13:04And if you're wondering about it and you just don't, you're not
- 13:06sure. You're not sure, but I know
- 13:08you're going to love it. Free trial on right now.
- 13:11Link is in the description. Come join us.
- 13:13And actually, I should have told you this before, but you join
- 13:15the boot camp. You hit six months in the inner
- 13:17circle, and you can start the inner circle even though boot
- 13:19camp starts in January. If you reserve your seat now
- 13:22you're in the inner circle. Second, you reserve your seat.
- 13:25OK, All right, I drop new episodes every Tuesday, every
- 13:30Thursday, and every Saturday at 9:00 AM Eastern.
- 13:33Am I crazy? No, I like showing up and
- 13:37laughing through. So you see, for me, showing up
- 13:41and laughing through it is part of the rebellion.
- 13:44It's my rebellion. So join me every Tuesday,
- 13:47Thursday, Saturday. Follow the channel, subscribe to
- 13:49the channel, give me a thumbs up, do whatever it is.
- 13:52But I love you guys. I love you so much.
- 13:54This community is growing and I love this community.
- 13:57And until next time, keep showing up, you keep laughing,
- 14:02keep rebelling, and keep doing life today.
