- 1:21Speaker 2: Yes, you're hearing right.
- 1:22Speaker 3: It is Jess Ricky taking over today because poor Victoria
- 1:25Speaker 3: is under the weather. I'm still going to be sharing
- 1:28Speaker 3: all of our favorite money wins and confessions, and Beck
- 1:30Speaker 3: of course will be sharing her best broke tips. We're
- 1:32Speaker 3: going to be helping to answer a money to Lemma,
- 1:34Speaker 3: which is all about the relatable feeling of working hard
- 1:38Speaker 3: but not being able to get ahead, and something that
- 1:40Speaker 3: you slip into our DMS about how to handle feeling
- 1:43Speaker 3: anxious about Christmas consumerism. Okay, I get it, I get it?
- 1:48Speaker 2: And are they with you?
- 1:49Speaker 3: It's just us again today God isn't so gay. It
- 1:52Speaker 3: feels like we just get to go rogue. I know, sorry,
- 1:55Speaker 3: no offense TVD. She's listening to this. I don't know
- 1:58Speaker 3: why either, because it's not as if she the one
- 2:00Speaker 3: that keeps us in line.
- 2:01Speaker 2: I mean when she's not here. I'm like, yeah, totally
- 2:05Speaker 2: that they're off I know. Seriously, we do, we do
- 2:08Speaker 2: or say whatever we want. We can do a hole
- 2:10Speaker 2: epsode and tailswift if you want, don't tempt me really
- 2:12Speaker 2: good time.
- 2:14Speaker 3: Instead of a tailor's full blown breakdown, because we would
- 2:17Speaker 3: be here for days.
- 2:18Speaker 2: We would.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Should we do a five star review?
- 2:20Speaker 2: Please?
- 2:20Speaker 3: Alrighty, This one is actually from Google and I wanted
- 2:23Speaker 3: to remind you If you're not using Apple podcasts.
- 2:25Speaker 2: That's totally fine.
- 2:26Speaker 3: We'll take your five star reviews wherever we can get them,
- 2:28Speaker 3: that includes on Google. This one came from Stephanie, who said,
- 2:32Speaker 3: if you're not already listening to She's on the Money,
- 2:34Speaker 3: what are you even doing with your life? Victoria should
- 2:38Speaker 3: one hundred percent be our next prime minister. Imagine the
- 2:41Speaker 3: budget actually making sense and being sastly explained to us
- 2:45Speaker 3: with snacks. Beck is the voice in my head every
- 2:47Speaker 3: time I think about impulse buying another plant.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Do you really need it?
- 2:51Speaker 4: Though?
- 2:51Speaker 2: And Jess, Jess is.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Your sunshine in podcast form. I feel karma just hearing
- 2:56Speaker 3: her speak. This podcast is like sitting down with your cleverest,
- 3:00Speaker 3: kindest friends who actually get the money stuff, no judgment,
- 3:04Speaker 3: just real talk, smart strategies and the occasional laugh so
- 3:08Speaker 3: hard you snort moment. I've learned more from these women
- 3:11Speaker 3: than I did in any education facility. Bless their budgeting souls.
- 3:15Speaker 3: Oh my, so sweet, thank you so much.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Oh I feel all warm and fuzzy that you do
- 3:24Speaker 2: have a very calming so much. Oh that's really really fine,
- 3:30Speaker 2: So I thank you so much. Sephanie. God, I love
- 3:32Speaker 2: that bit that's really fun. I will have to take
- 3:35Speaker 2: over that forever.
- 3:35Speaker 4: Now.
- 3:36Speaker 3: Yes, I'm gonna have to ask you every week, I think,
- 3:41Speaker 3: because oh.
- 3:41Speaker 2: It's just so lovely.
- 3:43Speaker 3: People say thank you, thank you. I will say though
- 3:46Speaker 3: this next but is also very fun. I'm really enjoying
- 3:49Speaker 3: sitting in the driver. I don't get too comfortable.
- 3:52Speaker 2: It's very natural on you. Thank you so much.
- 3:55Speaker 3: But I've been loving doing the question because we have
- 3:58Speaker 3: to do something a little, a little off topic.
- 4:00Speaker 2: That's my finance love it.
- 4:01Speaker 3: So this week we have one from Rebecca who said,
- 4:04Speaker 3: what is your favorite thing to do at Christmas time
- 4:07Speaker 3: that doesn't cost anything?
- 4:08Speaker 5: Oh?
- 4:10Speaker 2: I don't know if it's like because it probably does
- 4:13Speaker 2: indirectly cost something in like petrol and stuff like that.
- 4:16Speaker 2: But something I do every single Christmas, yes, and I
- 4:18Speaker 2: force my family to do it is drive around or
- 4:21Speaker 2: you can walk around and look at Christmas lights and
- 4:23Speaker 2: I make a mass I look at all like Google
- 4:26Speaker 2: the best places you can find on TikTok the best
- 4:28Speaker 2: places to visit no matter where you are in Australia,
- 4:30Speaker 2: no matter where you are in the world. Yeah, go
- 4:32Speaker 2: on TikTok. Find the best places in your area in
- 4:35Speaker 2: your city, and either walk, public transport drive if you
- 4:39Speaker 2: have the means to. If you are driving, what I
- 4:41Speaker 2: love to do is start fromhere I am, and then
- 4:43Speaker 2: on maps I'll find where every place is that I
- 4:46Speaker 2: want to visit and then do like a loop. And
- 4:48Speaker 2: then also part of this tradition is getting a soft
- 4:52Speaker 2: serve or getting an ice cream from servo. And so
- 4:55Speaker 2: it's very very It doesn't cost too much, but it
- 4:58Speaker 2: also doesn't have to cost anything. Ye finding ways to
- 5:01Speaker 2: like you know, you can reastack from home exactly, doesn't
- 5:04Speaker 2: that cost anything at all. I love that I do
- 5:06Speaker 2: that every Christmas, and it is a necessity.
- 5:10Speaker 3: One of the things I'm so excited about is next
- 5:12Speaker 3: Christmas because my house will be built by them. I'll
- 5:15Speaker 3: be able to decorate my house with lights. I aspire
- 5:17Speaker 3: to be. When I think of Christmas lights where I live,
- 5:20Speaker 3: there are some known houses, it is like a full
- 5:23Speaker 3: scale production.
- 5:24Speaker 2: I aspire to be one of those houses.
- 5:27Speaker 4: One of them.
- 5:27Speaker 3: They even will come out and they will they have
- 5:29Speaker 3: like a popcorn machine and they'll sell like hold for
- 5:32Speaker 3: a dollar or something to like fundraise I think, to
- 5:34Speaker 3: cover like the cost of electricity. I don't know, but
- 5:37Speaker 3: it's like a whole thing, which is so good.
- 5:39Speaker 4: I love that.
- 5:40Speaker 2: That's so cool. You know when a mister Whoopy is there,
- 5:43Speaker 2: you know you've got it, You're in the right pot.
- 5:48Speaker 2: That sounds great. That's a great one I really love.
- 5:51Speaker 3: Also kind of my cost you in ingredients, but generally
- 5:55Speaker 3: you have all of them in your pantry. A gingerbread
- 5:57Speaker 3: house or gingerbread cookies one of my favorite traditions making them,
- 6:02Speaker 3: or you can pre make them and have everyone come
- 6:04Speaker 3: over and decorate them together. I'm partial to a gingerbread
- 6:08Speaker 3: cookie with a royal icing on top, so not just
- 6:11Speaker 3: like drawing the face, but like flooding the whole thing
- 6:14Speaker 3: and making a fun design if you're the one who
- 6:16Speaker 3: likes to partake in a little baking moment that it
- 6:18Speaker 3: tastes delicious. But otherwise just doing your like your fun
- 6:21Speaker 3: little outline designs like you traditionally would is also really exciting.
- 6:25Speaker 3: And then I feel like the best bit is like
- 6:26Speaker 3: the reward is at the end of you to eat
- 6:28Speaker 3: the cookies or the ginger of course. Oh actually on
- 6:31Speaker 3: the gingerbread house. Note, so we do a Christmas trip
- 6:33Speaker 3: with our big group of friends every year, and we'll
- 6:36Speaker 3: buy this one you could bake them though, so that
- 6:38Speaker 3: it's free. But we'll do a gingerbread house making competition.
- 6:41Speaker 3: Good or usually cumbles or partners. Everyone does it, so
- 6:44Speaker 3: you do that. But then obviously not everybody is creatively inclined,
- 6:48Speaker 3: and that's okay. So we then also do a structural
- 6:51Speaker 3: integrity test of course at the end. So once they're
- 6:54Speaker 3: all built, you know, you judge, you pick the winn
- 6:55Speaker 3: or whatever, and then everyone like bangs on the table like, yes,
- 6:59Speaker 3: you see which one holds up the longest. Oh my god,
- 7:02Speaker 3: that's everyone's.
- 7:03Speaker 2: Got a chance to win. Yeah. Great, So one most
- 7:06Speaker 2: beautiful and one the most structurally integral. Yes, great, idea,
- 7:11Speaker 2: very very love. That's a great question.
- 7:13Speaker 3: I'd love to hear what everybody else's favorite free Christmas
- 7:15Speaker 3: trutions are leaving in the comments front.
- 7:17Speaker 2: I'd love to have a look at them. If Victoria
- 7:19Speaker 2: could also leave hers in the comments. I wonder what
- 7:21Speaker 2: she would have answered, great, I don't know, maybe her
- 7:24Speaker 2: handmade homemade? Yeah true, too true Chris Kringle. Yes, that's
- 7:30Speaker 2: a really good one. Yeah, so true. I don't know. Gorgeous.
- 7:33Speaker 3: We'll send her a text after. But with that being said,
- 7:36Speaker 3: I actually have lots of very fun money wins to share.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Great if I may please.
- 7:40Speaker 3: Alrighty, So the first one that I have this week
- 7:43Speaker 3: comes from Sarah, who said she's found out her GP
- 7:46Speaker 3: can now describe her daughter's eighthd medication, so she no
- 7:50Speaker 3: longer has to pay two hundred and havy dollars every
- 7:52Speaker 3: six months to get the script when she can just
- 7:54Speaker 3: have it bulk build instead.
- 7:56Speaker 2: Oh my god, that's so good.
- 7:57Speaker 3: I feel like that's a game changer, because if there
- 7:59Speaker 3: is such a big tax people to ADHD or all
- 8:02Speaker 3: of our neurodiverse friends who have varying things that you
- 8:05Speaker 3: need perhaps medications for, it feels really unsane to me
- 8:08Speaker 3: that you have to I know that we need it
- 8:10Speaker 3: to be regulated and safe, and that's very important, but
- 8:13Speaker 3: I also think it's not ideal that you have to
- 8:15Speaker 3: pay to have access to the thing that you need
- 8:17Speaker 3: to be able to function more effectively.
- 8:20Speaker 2: I agree. It's like, God, can we catch a break.
- 8:21Speaker 2: We've got this thing, your neurodiverse already, the world's not
- 8:24Speaker 2: made for you, and now you've got to spend so
- 8:26Speaker 2: much money for the rest of your life. Yeah, God, God,
- 8:29Speaker 2: can we have a little break.
- 8:31Speaker 3: Just a little piece of something totally.
- 8:33Speaker 2: I love it.
- 8:33Speaker 3: Next, I've got a money win from Bianca, who said
- 8:35Speaker 3: she stayed home all weekend again for the fourth weekend
- 8:38Speaker 3: in a row. She did go to the gyms day
- 8:40Speaker 3: and then afterwards bought three items at the supermarket, but
- 8:42Speaker 3: staying away from the shops is working wonders for her
- 8:45Speaker 3: bank account. Great, I bet at this time of year
- 8:47Speaker 3: that's making a huge difference. Well done, Bianca. Next, I've
- 8:51Speaker 3: got a money win from Cerese, who said I recently
- 8:53Speaker 3: lost a bit of weight and a lot of my
- 8:55Speaker 3: clothes don't fit me anymore. But my sister just gave
- 8:58Speaker 3: me three huge bin bags her old clothes that she
- 9:01Speaker 3: no longer wants, and she has really good taste.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Oh my god, sick.
- 9:05Speaker 3: There's nothing more fun than when someone you know goes
- 9:07Speaker 3: Oh I've done a wardrobe clean out.
- 9:08Speaker 2: Do you want to dig through? Totally? Absolutely? I do
- 9:13Speaker 2: such a good feel this.
- 9:15Speaker 3: Next, I've got a money loss from Anita, who said
- 9:19Speaker 3: I bought an older model Dice an air app, but
- 9:22Speaker 3: money win. It was retailing at eight hundred and ninety
- 9:24Speaker 3: nine dollars and I got it for six hundred and
- 9:26Speaker 3: seventy one. I also think it's a money win because
- 9:29Speaker 3: I have been and will continue to use it a
- 9:31Speaker 3: couple of times a week. Good reminder when new tech
- 9:33Speaker 3: comes out, check the old tech. You know your iPhone
- 9:35Speaker 3: means old iPhones on sale, all that sort of thing.
- 9:38Speaker 3: New tony box, old tony box.
- 9:40Speaker 2: That is so true.
- 9:41Speaker 3: The old ones just as good. Like just because it
- 9:43Speaker 3: doesn't have the newest, fanciest thing, it doesn't mean it's
- 9:45Speaker 3: going to do the job. Especially a Christmas when we're
- 9:47Speaker 3: shopping for gifts and stuff, exactly, a slightly older model
- 9:50Speaker 3: is a great option. Next, I've got a money win
- 9:53Speaker 3: from Charlotte who said she did a click and collect
- 9:55Speaker 3: from Coals for the first time in a long time
- 9:57Speaker 3: and actually got twenty dollars off of her shop. She
- 9:59Speaker 3: says she doesn't really know what it.
- 10:01Speaker 2: Was from, but it was a good win for the week. Beautiful.
- 10:03Speaker 3: And then I've also got one from Louisa who said
- 10:05Speaker 3: we needed to do some electrical work on our rental
- 10:07Speaker 3: house and we were dreading the bill, but I realized
- 10:10Speaker 3: I had a bucket for this, and I'm now no
- 10:12Speaker 3: longer completely dreading it. Hates to be prepared absolutely. And
- 10:15Speaker 3: then lastly this week I've got a money win from Jackie,
- 10:18Speaker 3: who said I got an Apple Watch series eleven with
- 10:21Speaker 3: points via my private health insurance. I've had enough points
- 10:25Speaker 3: three months ago, but I was hopeful to get a
- 10:27Speaker 3: brand new one for the same amount of points.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Oh my god, that's great. Great. I didn't even know
- 10:31Speaker 2: there was the thing. I know.
- 10:32Speaker 3: I would love to know which private health insurance that is. Yes,
- 10:35Speaker 3: maybe Switch, he sounds like it, But that's it for
- 10:38Speaker 3: me this week.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Amazing. They also have great Okay, so I've got a
- 10:41Speaker 2: few broke tips. If you're ready and willing, Oh please,
- 10:45Speaker 2: I've never been more ready and willing. So this rest
- 10:48Speaker 2: comes from Jets, who says, my local Hey, your first
- 10:52Speaker 2: money win came from Beck. That's so weird. True, everything's
- 10:59Speaker 2: lining up today.
- 11:00Speaker 3: I love a little coincidence exact.
- 11:02Speaker 2: So this special comes with Jess, who says, my local
- 11:04Speaker 2: church op shop does fill a bag for two dollars
- 11:07Speaker 2: from their baby and kids' clothes. Oh my god, it's
- 11:10Speaker 2: so good. That is so good. I've been going weekly
- 11:13Speaker 2: and it's such a dope being rush. Plus the kids
- 11:15Speaker 2: are clothed on a budget. Once they've outgrown, I'll donate back.
- 11:19Speaker 2: So it's basically a rental service, especially for my two
- 11:21Speaker 2: month old who is growing it rapidly.
- 11:23Speaker 3: Oh, that's a really sweet way to approach it, tutor,
- 11:26Speaker 3: donate it back totally.
- 11:27Speaker 2: I really really like that. That's genius. And I love
- 11:29Speaker 2: that things aren't going to ways and you're not taking
- 11:32Speaker 2: in fast fashion, which sometimes we gotta and that's okay.
- 11:34Speaker 3: I wish there were more places I see this in
- 11:37Speaker 3: on TikTok of people in the US, where you can
- 11:39Speaker 3: go to like a good Will or one of their
- 11:41Speaker 3: thrift stores and it'll be the same. It's like pay
- 11:42Speaker 3: by weight, like, yeah, fill a bag for X amount
- 11:45Speaker 3: of dollars per Totally. I want that here. I know
- 11:49Speaker 3: if I feel like op shops are getting extremely pricey,
- 11:51Speaker 3: especially for stuff like a lot of it's polyester and
- 11:54Speaker 3: not great quality exactly.
- 11:56Speaker 2: And guys, op shop means opportunity shops for people who cannot.
- 11:59Speaker 3: Afford, you know, so it's like we stop overpricing, stop overpricing.
- 12:04Speaker 2: The sexon one comes from Stephanie who says, frozen spinach
- 12:06Speaker 2: it's one dollar a pack. It makes a cheap meal
- 12:09Speaker 2: look more healthy by adding a bit of green, which
- 12:12Speaker 2: I totally agree with. Example, Chuck some in a pack
- 12:15Speaker 2: of mac and cheese I bought half price. That's so clever.
- 12:19Speaker 2: I mean, doesn't sound very advertising, but I think like
- 12:24Speaker 2: spinach is actually kind of delicious.
- 12:27Speaker 3: Spinach disappears or whatever you put it into, especially if
- 12:30Speaker 3: you're blending it or if it's hot and it shrivels
- 12:33Speaker 3: total wait to go, like a whole bag of spinach.
- 12:35Speaker 3: It's literally like a tablespoon by the time it's done.
- 12:37Speaker 2: Really, and it's not like a super strong flavor, like yeah,
- 12:41Speaker 2: you could really get away with just like adding so
- 12:43Speaker 2: much more nutrition to your meal. That's one of my
- 12:46Speaker 2: preferred greens. Absolutely. Okay, so my one this week is
- 12:50Speaker 2: one that I loved from a Christmas idea thread from
- 12:53Speaker 2: last year. But it's such a creative, fun and cheap
- 12:55Speaker 2: group gift activity Graces. You can get some great books
- 12:59Speaker 2: looking knee new from the op shop for two to
- 13:01Speaker 2: four dollars. You wrap them in brown paper and write
- 13:04Speaker 2: a vague description on the back, and each person chooses
- 13:07Speaker 2: description they like the most. You can even do it
- 13:09Speaker 2: for dirty sander or stealing sander or bout sand or
- 13:12Speaker 2: whatever you call it to make it even more fun
- 13:14Speaker 2: as well. So I think that's it's great, and it's festive.
- 13:17Speaker 2: And if you're trying to not spend too much this year,
- 13:19Speaker 2: or if you just don't have the money to spend,
- 13:21Speaker 2: it's so funny the distinction between the two people be like,
- 13:23Speaker 2: I'm trying not to spend and I'm like over here
- 13:25Speaker 2: thinking I am not trying not to spend because they
- 13:29Speaker 2: don't have to spend. So if you're like me, you
- 13:31Speaker 2: don't have the money, then this is actually a really
- 13:33Speaker 2: good idea and you can just get a book from
- 13:35Speaker 2: your own house.
- 13:36Speaker 3: I love that it's a blind date with the book,
- 13:37Speaker 3: like it's a surprise exactly exactly fun I think it's
- 13:40Speaker 3: so clever. So that's me for this week. Beautiful, really
- 13:43Speaker 3: good wrap up. Very I love that you got a
- 13:45Speaker 3: festive one in there. I really appreciate you. Oh I
- 13:47Speaker 3: did try to thank you so much. Well, let's go
- 13:49Speaker 3: to a really quick break though, and when we come back,
- 13:51Speaker 3: we're going to be helping to answer a money j
- 13:52Speaker 3: lemma all about the relatable feeling of working hard but
- 13:55Speaker 3: not being able to get ahead, and also chatting through
- 13:58Speaker 3: the DM that you sent us this week, which was
- 14:00Speaker 3: asking how to handle feeling anxious around Christmas. Consumerism don't
- 14:04Speaker 3: go anywhere.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Welcome back everyone. Here's this week's money dilemma.
- 14:13Speaker 5: Hi, there, have you got a money dilemma you just
- 14:16Speaker 5: can't solve that. She's on the Money team is here
- 14:18Speaker 5: to help. Every week we tackle your dilemmas, both big
- 14:22Speaker 5: and small, to answer your most burning money, career and
- 14:24Speaker 5: life questions. To get involved, simply head to our website
- 14:28Speaker 5: and leave us a short voice recording and you might
- 14:30Speaker 5: just find yourself on the show. Now, let's take a
- 14:32Speaker 5: listen to this week's money dilemma.
- 14:37Speaker 4: Hi, She's on the Money. My money dilemma is I'm
- 14:39Speaker 4: twenty one and only about six months ago gained any
- 14:43Speaker 4: consciousness of financial literacy. I thought I was fairly good
- 14:46Speaker 4: with money, pretty frugal, good at saving, But it turns
- 14:50Speaker 4: out I've been saving like a child. I only have
- 14:52Speaker 4: a savings and a spending account. My savings isn't very
- 14:55Speaker 4: high interest, and I'm so struggling right now. I'm at
- 15:00Speaker 4: you need to do a full load. I'm working eighteen
- 15:01Speaker 4: hours a week paid, nine hours a week unpaid. I'm
- 15:04Speaker 4: commuting nine hours a week, so the majority of my
- 15:06Speaker 4: money is gone onwards petrol. I want to move out
- 15:09Speaker 4: within the next year or so. Me and my partner
- 15:11Speaker 4: are talking about moving overseas within the next couple of years.
- 15:14Speaker 4: I just really need a new car. And I've just
- 15:17Speaker 4: been sitting at about six grand for the last six months,
- 15:21Speaker 4: six grande in total, and i just feel like I'm drowning.
- 15:24Speaker 4: Even though I'm so very privileged and I have my
- 15:26Speaker 4: family support and I live at home. I feel like
- 15:28Speaker 4: I'm working so hard and I'm just not gaining anything.
- 15:32Speaker 4: I'm just like barely staying afloat with no free days off.
- 15:35Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 15:36Speaker 4: I'm so lost.
- 15:38Speaker 2: Yeah, thank you so much for listening. Firstly, twenty one,
- 15:42Speaker 2: you ain't going to worry about anything. But also I
- 15:44Speaker 2: don't think, oh gosh, I have so many thoughts. Unpaid work.
- 15:48Speaker 2: I understand like placement and stuff like that, and I
- 15:51Speaker 2: understand like some companies can't afford to hire an extra person.
- 15:56Speaker 2: I'm just like this should be like government. I don't know,
- 16:00Speaker 2: the unpaid stuff. I don't love it because some people
- 16:02Speaker 2: do have the luxury of living at home and some
- 16:04Speaker 2: people don't, and some people are living like paycheck to
- 16:06Speaker 2: paycheck and to get by or to make it like
- 16:11Speaker 2: through UNI to kind of get ahead, to do more
- 16:14Speaker 2: with your life. You're gonna have to, Like some people
- 16:17Speaker 2: can just live at home and make it work, and
- 16:18Speaker 2: some people have to support themselves. And I'm like, it's
- 16:21Speaker 2: not very accessible to everyone.
- 16:23Speaker 1: You know.
- 16:23Speaker 2: It's just like I don't really like the unpaid thing,
- 16:25Speaker 2: but I'm sure there are reasons why, but I don't
- 16:27Speaker 2: like anyway. So I respect and I appreciate that you
- 16:30Speaker 2: are in a situation where you are being seriously overworked.
- 16:35Speaker 2: But I would say you have money and savings. That's
- 16:38Speaker 2: an incredible start. I understand like the urgency. You're probably
- 16:43Speaker 2: feeling like, oh, I've wasted time or how do I
- 16:47Speaker 2: get ahead if I'm literally just making it every single week. Also,
- 16:53Speaker 2: all of my time is spent working, either paid or unpaid,
- 16:56Speaker 2: and you probably pretty burnt out right now. You probably
- 17:00Speaker 2: hear this a lot from people who are older than you.
- 17:03Speaker 2: Is that like when I was your age, I had
- 17:07Speaker 2: all these plans that just like didn't happen or whatever,
- 17:10Speaker 2: and it's probably like, Okay, that's not very helpful. Right Now,
- 17:13Speaker 2: you have this goal, which is to maybe move overseas,
- 17:17Speaker 2: maybe with your partner, and let's just say for argument's sake,
- 17:20Speaker 2: that's going to happen. But as someone who is thirty
- 17:22Speaker 2: three and who has been your age before and who
- 17:27Speaker 2: has had many goals and kind of like not achieved
- 17:31Speaker 2: many of them or just things took a different turn,
- 17:34Speaker 2: I would say, don't be hard on yourself if things
- 17:38Speaker 2: don't go to plan, or if things go to plan
- 17:39Speaker 2: later on, just don't be so hard and stuff. You're
- 17:42Speaker 2: very very young, you're trying to make it through yours
- 17:44Speaker 2: sounds like you're doing everything right. I'd say, maybe, like
- 17:47Speaker 2: try and look into a high interest savings account right now.
- 17:51Speaker 2: But the urgency in the panic and the worry I
- 17:54Speaker 2: can undersand where it comes from. But you're very very
- 17:55Speaker 2: young and dorty to worry about that. Just try And
- 17:59Speaker 2: I don't know, six thousand dollars sounds like incredible to me.
- 18:01Speaker 2: I'm like, that's but I understand when you're like, god,
- 18:04Speaker 2: I could have been doing so much more or whatever,
- 18:06Speaker 2: or like I thought I was doing great, but you
- 18:08Speaker 2: need X amount and your seat you're super to be
- 18:10Speaker 2: on track, and you know, I get so I can
- 18:12Speaker 2: understand that. But six thousand dollars sounds incredible. I'd be like,
- 18:15Speaker 2: I've made it. Yeah, I'll truly made it.
- 18:18Speaker 3: You know, my sweet baby angel, you are so far
- 18:21Speaker 3: ahead of where I was at twenty one. Totally not
- 18:24Speaker 3: to infantilize you, but you are very young. At twenty one,
- 18:27Speaker 3: I was coming back from Greece that if mis trip
- 18:29Speaker 3: where I had like twenty seven cents in my bangage daring, I.
- 18:31Speaker 2: Couldn't allow at the thing like you are.
- 18:34Speaker 3: Having the financial literacy is such a huge, wonderful first step,
- 18:39Speaker 3: and you have the benefit of time on your side.
- 18:42Speaker 3: I know at that age you really probably are finding
- 18:45Speaker 3: your independence. That's what I was doing anyway. I was
- 18:48Speaker 3: moving out of home, I was doing all those sorts
- 18:49Speaker 3: of things, and it is a bit of a shock
- 18:51Speaker 3: to the system really when you get out into the
- 18:53Speaker 3: real world and you're like, whoa, it costs money to
- 18:55Speaker 3: breathe totally. But I would say exactly is what you
- 18:59Speaker 3: were saying back. Don't push yourself to do something before
- 19:03Speaker 3: you're ready financially. If you have the privilege of being
- 19:06Speaker 3: at home, which it sounds like you do, use that
- 19:09Speaker 3: to your advantage. Would be my advice, live and budget
- 19:13Speaker 3: as if you would living out of home, and just
- 19:16Speaker 3: enjoy the fact that you have that luxury without the
- 19:19Speaker 3: actual pressure you know, if you do need to replace
- 19:22Speaker 3: your car, if you do need to do something, you've
- 19:24Speaker 3: got that safety net of being at home, I suppose,
- 19:28Speaker 3: But I would really focus on using this time to
- 19:31Speaker 3: build up your emergency fund, build up your fund to
- 19:34Speaker 3: save for a new car if you really need it,
- 19:36Speaker 3: all those sorts of things, and also at the same time,
- 19:39Speaker 3: give yourself some grace because I think it sounds like
- 19:42Speaker 3: when you're at UNI doing what I'm assuming is a
- 19:44Speaker 3: placement or an internship. You know, my partner did this,
- 19:47Speaker 3: and it is really taxing on you working or you know,
- 19:51Speaker 3: studying full time, working your paid hours, working your unpaid hours,
- 19:55Speaker 3: commuting long distances.
- 19:58Speaker 2: It is a lot to take on.
- 19:59Speaker 3: And yes, throughout your adult life there will be periods
- 20:01Speaker 3: where you commit to so many things at once, Like
- 20:04Speaker 3: I'm in a phase of life where it's kind of
- 20:06Speaker 3: like that for me right now. But I think that
- 20:09Speaker 3: take advantage of what you've got and just understand that
- 20:12Speaker 3: you don't have to do everything right now. You don't
- 20:15Speaker 3: have to move out of home next year, you don't
- 20:17Speaker 3: have to move overseas next year. It is so great
- 20:19Speaker 3: to have the luxury of time to plan and to
- 20:22Speaker 3: be able to do things at a pace that doesn't
- 20:24Speaker 3: have to give you anxiety. That means that you can
- 20:27Speaker 3: hopefully put yourself in a really solid position by getting
- 20:30Speaker 3: your foundational sorted out and then pursuing those things that
- 20:33Speaker 3: you want to totally.
- 20:35Speaker 2: And if it sounds like you're burnt out, have a
- 20:37Speaker 2: little break, don't behind yourself. Life is so long for
- 20:41Speaker 2: those who are of us, who are lucky enough to
- 20:43Speaker 2: experience all of it something. I know it's not long
- 20:45Speaker 2: for everyone, but I think you're doing great job. You're
- 20:47Speaker 2: on the right track, and just like, go easy, have
- 20:50Speaker 2: a rest.
- 20:51Speaker 3: I completely agree. Should we jump into something a little
- 20:55Speaker 3: more controversial, Yes?
- 20:56Speaker 4: Please?
- 20:57Speaker 2: Alrighty.
- 20:58Speaker 3: I've got a DM from the community this week and
- 21:00Speaker 3: it goes a little something like this, Hey, she's on
- 21:03Speaker 3: the money. I hate feeling like this, but I really
- 21:05Speaker 3: struggle with Christmas. It just makes me so anxious. The consumerism,
- 21:10Speaker 3: the waste, the pressure to keep up. It doesn't align
- 21:13Speaker 3: with my values at all. I've tried to do Christmas
- 21:15Speaker 3: with less, but it kind of backfired. The grandparents went
- 21:18Speaker 3: way overboard, and I ended up crying on Boxing Day
- 21:21Speaker 3: because they'd bought more for the kids than I did.
- 21:23Speaker 3: I felt like I'd failed as a mum. I've tried
- 21:26Speaker 3: bringing it up but always caused tension. And when I
- 21:28Speaker 3: zoom out, I get it. They want to spoil their
- 21:31Speaker 3: grandkids because it makes them happy. My partner loves Christmas,
- 21:35Speaker 3: and every time I try to rein it in, he
- 21:36Speaker 3: reminds me how upset I was that year. I hate
- 21:39Speaker 3: feeling like the Grinch and I'm so jealous of people
- 21:41Speaker 3: who can just enjoy Christmas. I'd love the community's advice
- 21:44Speaker 3: on how to handle it this year. Ah, that's a
- 21:47Speaker 3: tough spot to be in.
- 21:48Speaker 2: It really is, and it is so much more than
- 21:51Speaker 2: just like because I understand, like the anxiety can come
- 21:54Speaker 2: from a lack of funds and other things like that sometimes,
- 21:57Speaker 2: or like maybe a lack of like even community or
- 22:00Speaker 2: connection around you. That's those things are all completely valid,
- 22:03Speaker 2: but this is very like this is like an existential
- 22:07Speaker 2: based yeah, And I completely get that because I think
- 22:12Speaker 2: when you really think about like where these toys come from,
- 22:16Speaker 2: like is everything ethically sourced or like it's just it
- 22:20Speaker 2: does seem like a big waste. I think that if
- 22:23Speaker 2: you can't avoid it, there are two things I think
- 22:26Speaker 2: if you can try and explain to your family that
- 22:28Speaker 2: you would like. If they're going to go overboard, try
- 22:32Speaker 2: and find toys that are locally made, ethically sourced, ethically
- 22:39Speaker 2: everything like, try and find things that are like you know,
- 22:43Speaker 2: you can kind of feel a little bit better about
- 22:45Speaker 2: how it's made and how the impact on the environment
- 22:49Speaker 2: and the impact on the world, I guess, and if
- 22:51Speaker 2: you can kind of find peace there, great the are
- 22:55Speaker 2: the end. And I guess you can do this in
- 22:57Speaker 2: both situations. If they're just going to go overboard and
- 23:00Speaker 2: you're not super comfortable with where these things are coming from,
- 23:04Speaker 2: what they're buying, whether it's ethically sourced or ethically made.
- 23:08Speaker 2: The other alternative is to be very greatful for everything
- 23:12Speaker 2: and all that kind of thing, and then when the
- 23:13Speaker 2: time is right, donating all of those things to people
- 23:16Speaker 2: who are way less advantage. Like, you know, some people
- 23:20Speaker 2: are disadvantaged and they don't have the funds to buy
- 23:23Speaker 2: these kind of toys for their own children, and they
- 23:25Speaker 2: don't have they don't have access to all this kind
- 23:27Speaker 2: of stuff. So I think, one hand, it does feel
- 23:30Speaker 2: very wasteful, It feels very uncomfortable to see this all
- 23:34Speaker 2: this plastic in the world. But if you can use
- 23:36Speaker 2: that to someone else's advantage and you can give that
- 23:41Speaker 2: to the less fortunate, and I don't. I don't know why.
- 23:44Speaker 2: I have always kind of hated saying it like that
- 23:47Speaker 2: the less fortunate, but like.
- 23:49Speaker 3: It's creating a divide, yeah, or even just like like
- 23:52Speaker 3: oh poor you, you know, and like some people do
- 23:55Speaker 3: feel that way.
- 23:56Speaker 2: But some people are like, hey, I just don't have
- 23:58Speaker 2: as much money as you do, you know whatever, And
- 24:00Speaker 2: so you know, people that can't afford those kind of
- 24:04Speaker 2: gifts or those toys for their own children or those
- 24:07Speaker 2: toys for the adults. I love toys, so you know,
- 24:09Speaker 2: it could be for anyone. But yeah, I think you
- 24:11Speaker 2: can't avoid it. Then making use of that and kind
- 24:14Speaker 2: of like spreading that joy in other places would be
- 24:17Speaker 2: another option.
- 24:18Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, I totally agree. I think that it
- 24:21Speaker 3: is probably about communicating. You know, I understand why the grandparents.
- 24:25Speaker 3: I mean, if I got told that my nephews were
- 24:27Speaker 3: having a low by Christmas, I'd probably be like.
- 24:28Speaker 2: Oh, well, buy the more toys.
- 24:30Speaker 3: You know, so I understand the quick like oh I
- 24:33Speaker 3: want to spoil, I want to love, I want to nurture.
- 24:35Speaker 3: But raising with your family, why you're taking this perspective
- 24:39Speaker 3: like what your concerns with it are exactly as you said,
- 24:42Speaker 3: might be a really great way to find a middle
- 24:43Speaker 3: ground in terms of finding things that are produced or
- 24:46Speaker 3: doing Victoria's favorite handmade, homemade secondhand totally like type of vibe.
- 24:51Speaker 3: The other thing I would say is Christmas, there are
- 24:54Speaker 3: a lot of opportunities to volunteer to give back, and
- 24:58Speaker 3: I feel like that is a really fantastic way to
- 25:01Speaker 3: still enjoy the spirit of Christmas. Depending on the age
- 25:04Speaker 3: of your children, it also can be a really positive
- 25:06Speaker 3: exercise in you know, there is a lot of disparity
- 25:10Speaker 3: in the world, and you know, not everybody is in
- 25:12Speaker 3: the same position. So whether it's regifting additional things that
- 25:15Speaker 3: you receive like you said, or whether it's volunteering time.
- 25:18Speaker 3: There's a lot of meal services that operate during that period.
- 25:21Speaker 3: You can volunteer, wrapping gifts, There's lots that you can do.
- 25:24Speaker 3: I think it is a really positive time to Obviously,
- 25:28Speaker 3: when you can doing it year round is really important,
- 25:30Speaker 3: but there are a lot of opportunities available for you
- 25:32Speaker 3: to participate during the holiday season, and I think that's
- 25:35Speaker 3: a really powerful message to teach your children. It can
- 25:38Speaker 3: be a family activity. You can all go together to
- 25:40Speaker 3: participate and do something to help out in your local community.
- 25:44Speaker 3: And that also, I think I'm not saying you should
- 25:46Speaker 3: volunteer to override feelings of guilt, but I think it
- 25:50Speaker 3: sounds like a lot of your guilt is coming from
- 25:53Speaker 3: feeling as though it's a wasteful period. And so maybe
- 25:57Speaker 3: we can turn that wastefulness exactly as you were saying
- 25:59Speaker 3: back into something positive and impactful and also a learning
- 26:03Speaker 3: opportunity as well, which it might feel really good. It
- 26:06Speaker 3: might open the door for you to do more of
- 26:07Speaker 3: that throughout the year, which is also a fantastic thing.
- 26:10Speaker 3: But also it is a middle ground, I suppose. And
- 26:13Speaker 3: while you want to consume in a certain way, it's
- 26:15Speaker 3: out you. You said your partner really loves Christmas, they
- 26:18Speaker 3: might have a different take on what they want that
- 26:20Speaker 3: to look like. So you might need to compromise a
- 26:23Speaker 3: little bit to find a spot that works for everybody.
- 26:26Speaker 2: But yeah, there's lots of options.
- 26:27Speaker 3: There's lots of I think we've done a thread in
- 26:29Speaker 3: the Facebook group before around ethical even like you're gift trapping.
- 26:32Speaker 3: You know, you can gift in tea towels or wrap
- 26:35Speaker 3: in newspapers, or you know things you've already got. There
- 26:38Speaker 3: are lots of ways to reduce the physical waste. You
- 26:41Speaker 3: don't need all the trims, and you can repurpose decorations
- 26:44Speaker 3: shop them secondhand. So there are also lots of ways
- 26:47Speaker 3: to do those traditional holiday things without having that hugely
- 26:51Speaker 3: wasteful impact on the environment too, which I would encourage you.
- 26:54Speaker 2: To look into.
- 26:54Speaker 3: Yes, absolutely, but we did obviously put it to the
- 26:57Speaker 3: community to see what everybody else thought.
- 26:58Speaker 4: Yes.
- 26:59Speaker 3: First of all, we said what would you do if
- 27:02Speaker 3: you were our community member. Thirteen percent of people said,
- 27:04Speaker 3: just lean into Christmas, sixty seven percent said I would
- 27:08Speaker 3: accept that we all do Christmas differently, and twenty percent
- 27:11Speaker 3: said I would set firm boundaries with the grandparents. Next,
- 27:15Speaker 3: we said what's your biggest stressor at Christmas? Thirty four
- 27:18Speaker 3: percent of people said financial pressure very close, thirty two
- 27:22Speaker 3: percent of people said family dynamics, thirteen percent said gift guilt,
- 27:27Speaker 3: and twenty two percent of people said waste and excess.
- 27:30Speaker 3: So it sounds like our community members definitely not alone
- 27:33Speaker 3: in their concerns. After that, we obviously said what is
- 27:36Speaker 3: your two cents, and as always, we got lots of answers.
- 27:40Speaker 3: Somebody said the mental load is just next level. During
- 27:44Speaker 3: the end of the year, speak up and look after yourself.
- 27:47Speaker 2: Yes, very true.
- 27:48Speaker 3: Someone else said Christmas is a time of year people
- 27:50Speaker 3: seem to be the most wasteful. Look at doing gifts
- 27:53Speaker 3: during the year instead.
- 27:55Speaker 2: That's a good idea. Yes, so wasteful. It's almost like
- 27:57Speaker 2: a buffer between you and your spending. But like, make
- 27:59Speaker 2: a Christmas totally totally.
- 28:02Speaker 3: Someone else said, the gift of self compassion can go
- 28:06Speaker 3: a long way. I have a note on my mirror
- 28:08Speaker 3: to remind myself my love is not defined by what
- 28:11Speaker 3: I can afford, and at Christmas, I have to repeat
- 28:13Speaker 3: this often to myself, which I think is true.
- 28:16Speaker 2: Beautiful. I love that.
- 28:18Speaker 3: Yeah, literally, so true. My love is not defined by
- 28:20Speaker 3: what I can afford. Say it again, put it in
- 28:22Speaker 3: your mirror.
- 28:22Speaker 2: I really like that. That's beautiful.
- 28:25Speaker 3: Somebody else said, at a time of year when a
- 28:26Speaker 3: lot of us don't get to be with our loved ones,
- 28:28Speaker 3: just enjoy it while it's there.
- 28:30Speaker 2: Yeah, that's fair. It's a good point which I can't understand.
- 28:33Speaker 2: But that doesn't mean that you have to give in
- 28:35Speaker 2: on everything.
- 28:36Speaker 3: Yes, we had someone else say, kids don't care about
- 28:38Speaker 3: the amount or have words around it, but they'll sense
- 28:41Speaker 3: your feelings.
- 28:42Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true. They don't know how much things cost. True.
- 28:46Speaker 3: I think it is like you really remember, like when
- 28:48Speaker 3: I think about Christmas, I think about joy and happiness
- 28:51Speaker 3: and love, and you can do that with or without
- 28:54Speaker 3: any of the extra stuff.
- 28:55Speaker 2: Really conclutely.
- 28:56Speaker 3: Absolutely, somebody else said, respectfully, grandparents need to see it
- 28:59Speaker 3: from your point of view and compromise. We had someone
- 29:02Speaker 3: else say conversations are hard, the classic we hardly have
- 29:05Speaker 3: room for anything. Else often works, wonders, little loophole.
- 29:09Speaker 2: That's a good idea.
- 29:10Speaker 3: Someone else says in their home Santa does something you want,
- 29:13Speaker 3: something you need, something to wear, something to share, and
- 29:16Speaker 3: something to read.
- 29:17Speaker 2: Cute.
- 29:18Speaker 4: I love that.
- 29:19Speaker 3: Take a couple of boxes. Yeah, and then give one
- 29:22Speaker 3: big gift. And then I'm going to end on this
- 29:24Speaker 3: one because I think it just really sums everything up.
- 29:26Speaker 3: And they said sometimes joy can be your priority gorgeous,
- 29:31Speaker 3: which I think is really true. And yeah, as I said, Christmas,
- 29:34Speaker 3: there's a lot of pressure on people, I think, but
- 29:37Speaker 3: ultimately it is it is just another day in the year. Yeah,
- 29:40Speaker 3: And if you want to participate in everything, that's wonderful,
- 29:43Speaker 3: But there's no benchmark.
- 29:45Speaker 2: There's no right way to do Christmas.
- 29:47Speaker 3: And you know, if you and somebody else wants to
- 29:49Speaker 3: celebrate it differently, that's okay, but you might just dare
- 29:52Speaker 3: I say, need to communicate a little bit.
- 29:55Speaker 2: Just find a middle ground. That's crazy, it's a crazy take.
- 29:58Speaker 2: Communication is key. I fear people are going to start
- 30:02Speaker 2: listening to this.
- 30:02Speaker 3: I know we're aaza, yeah, but please stay with us,
- 30:06Speaker 3: Please don't leave us. Enjoy the holiday season.
- 30:09Speaker 2: For those who celebrate Christmas. Merry Christmas to you and
- 30:11Speaker 2: very happy holidays. And we'll see you guys bright and
- 30:14Speaker 2: early on Monday morning. See you guys. Bye.
