- 0:00Doing Marriage Well for April 1st, 2026 How Your Self-Image Shapes Your Marriage
- 0:05How you think, what you feel, and how you interact with others are strongly
- 0:10shaped by how you perceive yourself.
- 0:12Your life and your marriage will always rise to, or fall to, match your self-image.
- 0:18Your self-image has a powerful impact on your life, and your childhood shaped
- 0:22your self-image a great deal.
- 0:23As an adult, have you thought about, or even better challenged, your self-image?
- 0:28Have you considered how your self-image affects, helps, or hurts your relationship
- 0:32with your spouse? Early on, our self-image is formed by our caregivers.
- 0:36Parents are a big part of that, but if you spend a lot of time with grandparents
- 0:39or in daycare, those people had a significant impact.
- 0:43As we get older, our social network shapes how we see ourselves.
- 0:46But we tend to look for people who agree with how we see ourselves because that feels comfortable.
- 0:51Even if it's negative, it feels familiar and safe.
- 0:54Here's the thing. All those people who shaped your self-image were imperfect.
- 0:59At best, they tried and fell short. Some were wounded and broken,
- 1:03and some got something out of making you feel bad about yourself.
- 1:06When you got married, you probably married a man or woman who largely agreed
- 1:10with your self-perception.
- 1:11Perhaps they saw you in a better light than you did and that attracted you.
- 1:15Sometimes that helps a person see themselves differently, but it can also create tension in a marriage.
- 1:20One common marriage problem related to a twisted self-image is the ability to receive compliments.
- 1:25If your spouse says something you don't think is true, why would you accept
- 1:29it? You might also worry they are trying to manipulate you with flattery.
- 1:33I've had husbands tell me that they are hurt their wife fights them when they
- 1:36say something nice about her. I suspect some wives have the same experience.
- 1:41Given how central your self-image is to your life, it would seem wise to spend
- 1:45more than a little time considering it.
- 1:47Why do you feel as you do about yourself? Can you trace what you feel back to
- 1:51what others said or did when you were young?
- 1:53Do you remember classmates at school labeling you as a nerd or strange and accepting their judgments?
- 1:58If you want to challenge your self-image and change it as needed,
- 2:02it will take some intentional effort.
- 2:04Start by writing down how you perceive yourself. Then list things to support those feelings.
- 2:09If you can't support something with current examples, there's a good chance
- 2:12that perception is not valid The next level is asking people you trust to tell
- 2:17you how they see you Hopefully your spouse is on this list Again,
- 2:21ask for supporting evidence And last, but certainly not least,
- 2:25ask God who he says you are Some of that may not be who you are now,
- 2:30but rather who he wants you to become With all that information gathered,
- 2:34think and pray Who are you, really? And who do you want to become?
- 2:39Then act like the person you want to be. Give yourself grace when you fail.
- 2:43The more you behave as the person you want to be, the more you will become that person.
- 2:47Do be aware that most folks don't like change, even when it's good change.
- 2:52So expect pushback. Give people time to adjust.
- 2:55If some friends keep trying to push you back to who you were,
- 2:58let them know that is not who you are.
- 3:00If they don't back down, you may have to limit your time with them.
- 3:04This is Paul, and your self-image affects how you do marriage.
