- 0:27This recording is not suitable for those with epilepsy or
- 0:30severe mental health issues, so get yourself comfortable and
- 0:34enjoy today's episode of The Hypnotist.
- 0:40Hi. It's Adam here and in this
- 0:42episode of The Hypnotist, you're going to be listening to a
- 0:45hypnosis session specifically to help a client that was dealing
- 0:50with long term symptoms of severe anxiety and depression.
- 0:57And this had happened over a long period of time.
- 1:00And, and the problem with when these short term symptoms of
- 1:07depression last for a long time, it then amplifies it because one
- 1:11of the key ways of coming to a diagnosis of depression is there
- 1:16is a lack of optimism, there is a lack of hope, and there is a
- 1:21psychological phenomenon known as learned helplessness.
- 1:23When people try things and they don't work, they make an
- 1:27evaluation that other things also aren't going to work.
- 1:30And that can actually amplify feelings of hopelessness, which
- 1:34then increase feelings of futility.
- 1:37And why bother? And the very biochemical
- 1:41reactions of depression, which is, you know, low levels of the
- 1:46happy hormones are things like serotonin and oxytocin.
- 1:51And it tends to create lots of feelings of stress or tiredness.
- 1:55And, and those kind of things which have their own things,
- 1:58they can lead to things like chronic fatigue and a lack of
- 2:02energy, which in turn reduces motivation to do the very things
- 2:06that would turn that situation around.
- 2:08And because of the self fulfilling nature of some of
- 2:12these things, it's really important to highlight that if
- 2:16there are genuine biological causes, then we can say, right,
- 2:23they can't immediately be changed just by thinking
- 2:26differently, but there will be certain things that can be
- 2:31changed. So let's say for example, you
- 2:34don't try anything because you think it's worthless.
- 2:37And you go from that, from trying something small and
- 2:39feeling like you've made a tiny bit of progress and that gives
- 2:42you a bit of dopamine. And then that makes you a bit
- 2:45more motivated to try something else.
- 2:48And because you try a few different things, get then gives
- 2:51you the confidence to do something you would never do.
- 2:54Maybe a long walk in nature. Or it might be, you know,
- 2:58something like meeting up with an old friend.
- 3:00And these little small things actually create big things over
- 3:05time. So the metaphor that you're
- 3:07going to hear in this hypnosis session uses this idea of a
- 3:12children's roundabout. Now, not every country uses the
- 3:15phrase roundabout. Here in the UK, it's this kind
- 3:18of circular thing that sits in a playground that you kind of sit
- 3:22on. You spin it round.
- 3:23And most people get the sense that when you use effort to spin
- 3:28a roundabout round, it takes less effort once the roundabout
- 3:32is moving because you've got the law of momentum.
- 3:36The analogy here for this client is that they'd had many, many
- 3:38years, are feeling anxious and depressed and and with low
- 3:42energy and hopelessness. So we can say the roundabout has
- 3:46momentum in a particular direction.
- 3:48Therefore, if we slow the roundabout and in even get it to
- 3:52stop, it creates an opportunity to steer it in a different
- 3:55direction. And that comes from subtle
- 3:59changes, consistently, little wins over time.
- 4:03And this is just to plant a seed of an idea of, well, let's look
- 4:08at what would slowing the roundabout mean?
- 4:11What would stopping the roundabout mean?
- 4:13And what would turning the roundabout in the different
- 4:15direction mean in relation to energy levels, optimism, hope
- 4:21and good feelings. And therefore that creates the
- 4:25possibility of a more optimistic future because if a tiny bit of
- 4:30progress is made, then you can have this kind of predictive
- 4:34element of thinking, well, if this continues, my life might be
- 4:37OK in a few years time. And that itself makes the game
- 4:40more winnable because it gives the very biological resources
- 4:46and and mental and psychological resources necessary to make that
- 4:49happen. I'm a big believer in self
- 4:51fulfilling prophecies. So if you have had, let's say,
- 4:56feelings of tiredness, fatigue, quite often people with severe
- 5:02depression and anxiety tend to have chronic disorders, you
- 5:08know, things like fibromyalgia, things like, you know, kind of
- 5:14chronic inflammation and, and pain and things like that.
- 5:18Because effectively the the body, the body is giving less of
- 5:22the very things that it would need to activate healing.
- 5:25When people are happy and in a good mood all the time, they
- 5:29have a stronger immune systems. All of these things are
- 5:31interconnected. So if you can relate to any of
- 5:34those kind of things, this analogy and thinking about a
- 5:38moment in the future, that would be compelling, but also perhaps
- 5:42a moment in the past. Now, this particular client
- 5:44could recall a specific time and I I could pick up on the
- 5:49language. They were very mindful in this
- 5:51moment where they were accessing a resource state.
- 5:54And a great belief system that I have is that any feeling you can
- 5:58have in a moment means you can access it again.
- 6:01And in that place they felt in a good space.
- 6:04So that gave them evidence that they could feel that way.
- 6:08Again. So things that I think could be
- 6:11useful if you feel that you might be in a hopeless or dark
- 6:14place, hopefully you'll get from this session.
- 6:17If you want something more bespoke, there will be a link in
- 6:19the show notes where you can schedule that free consultation
- 6:22call to explore working with me. But you might not need to.
- 6:25This session might help steer your life in in a different
- 6:28direction, might slow or even stop that roundabout so you can
- 6:32spin it in a different direction.
- 6:34So ideally to get the most from this session, find a quiet
- 6:38comfortable place, ideally where you won't be disturbed.
- 6:42Relax and enjoy the session. Take a deep breath in, and as
- 7:21you breathe in, breathe in a slow, calm, relaxing breath.
- 7:32And as you exhale, give permission to start releasing
- 7:40emotions you've been holding on to for far too long.
- 7:49Scan your body for any clues of where those emotions have been
- 7:52hiding and just decide as you breathe out, it's time to slowly
- 8:01but surely allow them to be released.
- 8:09So breathe in that wonderful feeling of calm and relaxation.
- 8:13And what if you were to let go some of that sadness you've been
- 8:21holding onto? Interestingly, different
- 8:28emotions tend to be held in different parts of the body.
- 8:34Sadness sometimes feels like it's around the throat, the
- 8:38heart, sometimes the temple. Anxiety sometimes feels like
- 8:46it's there in the gut, stress or anger maybe around the jaw.
- 8:55But I want you to breathe in and breathe out and scan your body
- 8:58for clues. Clues to emotions you're still
- 9:03holding onto, but also acknowledging that some of these
- 9:11emotions are no longer helping, they're hindering.
- 9:20I want you to get a sense that what if you've been holding on
- 9:26to heavy emotions for years now? What if it's time to let those
- 9:35emotions be released? So breathe in that resourceful
- 9:44feeling of calm and relaxation and just get a sense that those
- 9:50heavy emotions are starting slowly but surely to melt,
- 9:57dissolve, and just feel that slowly but surely, they're
- 10:04leaving your body in that outward breath.
- 10:19And I want you to focus on any kind of heaviness around your
- 10:24heart. Just get a sense then any
- 10:38feelings of grief, loss, sadness that can be released without it
- 10:46meaning that you hold any less love for that person.
- 10:54Breathing in that feeling of relaxation and just allowing
- 10:58your body to to let go. The
- 11:19deeper you breathe, the more relaxed you become and just feel
- 11:26how good it feels for your body to unwind, release tension, and
- 11:36relax. As you breathe in, fill your
- 11:41lungs with calmness and as you exhale, just allow yourself to
- 11:49let go of any tension in your shoulders, your chest, your arms
- 11:56and your legs. Feel your entire body just
- 12:01becoming heavier, limper and looser, more at ease, as though
- 12:08it's sinking into a state of comfort, safety, and relaxation.
- 12:22And as you continue to breathe slowly and steadily, you might
- 12:26notice a sense of calmness spreading through you, like a
- 12:34soft wave washing over your mind and body.
- 12:39With each breath out, allow yourself to sink deeper into
- 12:45this moment, deeper into relaxation, letting go of all
- 12:54that no longer serves you. And as you relax, deeper and
- 13:05deeper, allow your mind to drift to a place of imagination, a
- 13:12place where anything is possible.
- 13:20And in your mind's eye, just imagine standing in a quiet
- 13:27park, a children's park. And it's a peaceful, inviting
- 13:35space with lush green grass and a gentle breeze.
- 13:43Feel that breeze, a breeze that carries the scent of flowers.
- 13:51And right in the centre of this park is a roundabout.
- 13:57A children's roundabout. And as you step closer, notice
- 14:06something curious. The roundabout is spinning, but
- 14:12spinning without any children nearby.
- 14:18And I want you to see it spinning in what you decide is
- 14:22the wrong direction. And maybe that's anti clockwise,
- 14:29but whatever direction you perceive is an unhelpful
- 14:33direction, see it spinning that way.
- 14:39And as you watch it, you sense that this backward motion
- 14:46represents some of the challenges you've been feeling.
- 14:53What if it moving this way has been causing the fatigue,
- 14:58anxiety. Things feel like an uphill
- 15:04struggle. Everything feels like a drain.
- 15:13What if the roundabout moving that way is somehow linked to
- 15:16those feelings? And that's OK, because as you
- 15:24stand there looking at the roundabout, I want you to get a
- 15:32sense then. Just because the roundabout has
- 15:36been going in a particular direction for so long doesn't
- 15:42mean it has to continue in that direction.
- 15:52I want you to recall a moment. A moment of optimism, a feeling
- 16:01of contentment, a feeling of freedom, a feeling of
- 16:10possibility. Allow your mind to take you back
- 16:16to a moment of blue skies and a breeze and just allow yourself
- 16:24to re experience that feeling, a feeling of possibility, of
- 16:32mindfulness. And when you feel that feeling
- 16:37again, let me know about nodding your head.
- 16:45And as you return to the roundabout, notice the
- 16:47roundabout. It's slowing down.
- 16:53And then recall a moment early in your career when you felt
- 17:00successful, accomplished, needed, respected.
- 17:09Imagine stepping into that memory, feeling all of those
- 17:12feelings. And when you feel those
- 17:13feelings, let me know by nodding your head, and then see that the
- 17:20roundabout is now even slower, perhaps almost grinding to a
- 17:28halt. I want you to take a moment now,
- 17:37to place your hands gently on this roundabout that is almost
- 17:41stationary. Notice it's texture, and maybe
- 17:48it's made of metal or wood or plastic, and maybe it feels cool
- 17:54or smooth beneath your fingertips.
- 17:59And as you place your hands there, I want you to ask
- 18:04yourself a question in the most positive, optimistic tone.
- 18:13What's next? And as you say it in that
- 18:18tonality, feel hope and optimism and notice the roundabout starts
- 18:28turning in a different direction, begins to move in
- 18:37that new direction, and we can call this direction progress.
- 18:46The moment you notice that progress, feel joy, feel
- 18:52yourself smiling, feel hope returning.
- 18:59And just think of one thing right now that you can feel
- 19:05supremely grateful for. And when you can recall that
- 19:11thing to feel grateful for, let me know by nodding your head and
- 19:18then see the roundabout picking up speed in that new direction.
- 19:30As you see the roundabout moving in that new direction, notice
- 19:38feelings of fatigue seem to become less noticeable and scan
- 19:45your body for a feeling of energy.
- 19:50I want you to imagine that if you had a surge of motivation,
- 19:55where would you feel it In your body?
- 20:04Maybe you can already feel a glimmer of that motivation, like
- 20:09a phoenix from the flames rekindling.
- 20:15What if you act as if things will improve?
- 20:23And in doing so, the roundabout continues in that new positive
- 20:29direction. And the more it spins, the more
- 20:34there is to notice progress. And the more progress you
- 20:39notice, the more joy you feel. And the more joy you feel, the
- 20:44more motivation is unlocked. And maybe you can give this
- 20:57roundabout a nudge. Just imagine pushing it in that
- 21:00direction, enabling it to pick up speed.
- 21:07Every tiny step of doing something slightly different
- 21:13that represents a vote of confidence and belief in
- 21:18yourself feels like it's moving that roundabout in that new
- 21:23positive direction. And notice, the more that it
- 21:29spins that way, the easier it is to keep it spinning that way.
- 21:37As you get the sense that this roundabout is creating momentum.
- 21:43Momentum for joy, for possibility, for hope.
- 21:48And as it spins, the question of what's next seems to change to
- 21:58what's next. The same words with the
- 22:01different tonality no longer feels heavy or uncertain.
- 22:07Instead, it feels like it's triggering a spark of curiosity,
- 22:13an invitation to explore, to grow, and to discover.
- 22:26As the roundabout picks up speed, feel a deep sense of
- 22:31gratitude for where you are. Maybe look at the blue skies,
- 22:37feel a breeze and just feel a sense of hope for the future, a
- 22:47sense of excitement for where you could be heading.
- 22:53A glimmer of optimism expands, fills your heart.
- 23:02What if an intention creates the motivation, and the motivation
- 23:08unlocks the energy? Every time you make an
- 23:14evaluation of your value, you unlock more of the resources
- 23:24needed to make you more valuable.
- 23:28Each step forward, no matter how small, is a step worth
- 23:34celebrating. And whether you think of this
- 23:40roundabout or any roundabout or anything that rotates a merry go
- 23:48round a wheel, you will remember this moment, the power you have
- 23:58to slow things down, to reflect, to set an intention and make
- 24:08tiny progress, to turn the tide. What if it starts with one
- 24:18intention, one thing to be grateful for, one heavy emotion
- 24:25to be released, and as the tide is turned, it unlocks more of
- 24:33the resources needed to keep it moving in that new, wonderful
- 24:39direction. A direction that feels positive
- 24:43and aligned with who you are. And I want you to think about
- 24:53what progress would look like for you.
- 24:57Progress in the next few days, progress in the next few weeks,
- 25:05and progress in the next few months.
- 25:11And when you get a sense, a sense of what's next, let me
- 25:20know about nodding your head. It's time to leave this
- 25:26roundabout of your imagination, but taking back all of those
- 25:31wonderful feelings with you. And the only thing to leave is
- 25:35those heavy emotions that no longer serve you.
- 25:42So leave them there. Bring back the resources, bring
- 25:47back the optimism. And as you leave, notice that
- 25:50roundabout is still moving in that new direction.
- 25:55So take a deep breath in through your nose and out through your
- 25:59nose. Wiggle your fingers and wiggle
- 26:02your toes. Connect fully into the here and
- 26:04now as I now count from 1:00 to 10:00 to awaken you.
