- 0:00Oh, God. Oh, my God.
- 0:12What are you drinking?
- 0:14Camden Hell's Lager.
- 0:16I guess I guess it doesn't translate over to the US.
- 0:20Oh, we have lagers here.
- 0:22Bloody light, light bears, you pussies.
- 0:25Everything's fucking light, you fucking nancy pantsy fairies.
- 0:31Can't help it.
- 0:32Our country was founded by a bunch of fucking Quakers.
- 0:34They're afraid to dance. That's true.
- 0:36If it's more than three point five, we don't want to know.
- 0:40That's why. That's why.
- 0:42All right. It's working now.
- 0:44I'm going to go turn off the heat in my house and then then we're good to go.
- 0:47Yeah, this podcast is hot enough as it is, whoo,
- 0:50especially once we get this shit up on Pornhub.
- 0:56What? Yeah, that's the thing.
- 0:58That's the thing we're doing.
- 0:59Oh, yeah, I'm I'm going to be uploading all of our episodes onto Pornhub,
- 1:04similar to like YouTube, but amazing.
- 1:08I started the account and I've already got like five subscribers
- 1:11before even putting anything up.
- 1:13That is the weirdest thing, seen as we have no subscribers on YouTube. Yeah.
- 1:16Yeah, I think they just want me to resubscribe back to them.
- 1:19I don't know, which I totally will.
- 1:22I think I think Cage match would follow anybody willing to have 13 YouTube
- 1:27subscribers. Oh, shit. Look at that. All right.
- 1:30You got to try these things.
- 1:31We keep we keep tempting fight on getting to for you that we guess
- 1:35we keep saying to people, we'll get set up and only fans.
- 1:38I don't know what it would be, but.
- 1:41It doesn't need to be much, you know, they know what they're getting.
- 1:44Yeah, shirtless episodes.
- 1:46Just just the video of us, us, our tops off.
- 1:49Or you do what we do, just do bottomless episodes, but record it.
- 1:52But, you know, you have a table. Yeah.
- 1:55I'm bottomless right now.
- 1:56Fantastic. We knew you fit in.
- 2:00You guys feel in a strong way about either of these.
- 2:02I told them, Petrus, that you said that you're a stolen apologist
- 2:06and that you have a video essay about Red Rock West.
- 2:09So it's a perfect fit.
- 2:11Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:12I'm a I am a I'm a star.
- 2:14Look, I watched it.
- 2:16I was like, you know, still still like it despite it being shit.
- 2:19It's still good. It's a solid little film.
- 2:22And then, yeah, Red Rock West, I think is, yeah, is great.
- 2:25Yeah. Yeah.
- 2:27I think it would be on the U.S.
- 2:29release that's coming out next year because it's like quite hard to get on
- 2:32Blu Ray out there. Is that very hard?
- 2:34We're just talking about that.
- 2:35Yeah. It's a gaping hole in my collection right now
- 2:38because the people who put out the UK Blu Ray who commissioned me to do the
- 2:43video essay like said that like someone from the U.S.
- 2:47is looking to license it, like license the special features as well.
- 2:50So like I think that is because just had a release in Australia as well.
- 2:55So there's hope at least.
- 2:57Who knows? Maybe it'll be a shout or something.
- 2:59They're always doing speak of Australians.
- 3:02I was trying to remember it in a stolen like there was one guy who was like,
- 3:06oh, God, that's the worst stereotype ever.
- 3:09Weirdly, it was the Australian guy.
- 3:10It was the Australian. Oh, the she was a.
- 3:12Oh, yeah. She's pregnant.
- 3:14Hey, yeah, not the best.
- 3:16Look, he just wanted to get his knob wet or whatever he said.
- 3:21We know the lingo.
- 3:22Yeah, that pregnant puss. Yeah.
- 3:27That that that's it.
- 3:29That scene he like says on the phone like, oh, I need to get off the phone,
- 3:35mate, because this cab drivers about to fly a wobbly and then persists to like
- 3:39talk to him. I got to tell you about the Sheila from last night, the Pregas one.
- 3:43It's like, what are you doing?
- 3:45You're fucking maniac.
- 3:46I got a good question.
- 3:47What does he mean there?
- 3:49What's firing a warbly or whatever that these are?
- 3:53These are things that don't translate like even more so than like beer with alcohol
- 3:58content. So that that is throwing a wobbly is like just fucking losing your shit.
- 4:04Basically, but in like a polite way to.
- 4:06Yeah, I mean, for a wobbly like he just got pissed off.
- 4:11Oh, yeah. So he read the situation incredibly accurately because Vince did
- 4:17fire a wobbly.
- 4:18He sure she fucking does.
- 4:20Yeah, he wobbles the shit out of that, dude.
- 4:22You think they could have maybe had some connection there because Vince goes on
- 4:25this whole rant about how just prisoners were sent here.
- 4:28It's like, are you guys going to talk about that?
- 4:30Yeah, that is true.
- 4:31That is true. That is true. The five pound five pound bombs.
- 4:35Yeah, yeah. He did have a lot like on his mind.
- 4:38He had some pressing shit going on.
- 4:40I can understand like maybe a rain check, but you know, he could have got him a
- 4:43Foster's that would have I would have smoothed the whole thing over.
- 4:47It is Australian for beer brewed in Germany, baby.
- 4:52In the dumbest big cans ever.
- 4:55I remember the first time I was a kid and I saw one of those and I tried to pick it
- 4:58up and I was like, this cans enormous.
- 5:02It's just a lot of garbage beer.
- 5:05Speaking of maximize.
- 5:06Speaking of ruining the illusion, welcome back to cage match.
- 5:09We're calling around about meeting Nicholas Gage.
- 5:12That's us. We're a podcast.
- 5:15Yep. I'm your host, Sean.
- 5:17Here with my co-host Nick and our producer, Nick Peter.
- 5:22Hello. And we are having we are we are professionals at this.
- 5:26We do this a lot and we're good at it.
- 5:28Right. And we're joined by one of the originators of cage match or a cage match
- 5:33of Nick cage podcasts Petros of the caged in Coppola connections and new project
- 5:40getting to foe you.
- 5:42Yeah, that's me.
- 5:43That's me. I'm I'm mentally insane as if Nicholas cage of his 105 credits wasn't
- 5:48enough. I now do a podcast all about William Defoe.
- 5:51That's like 147 credits.
- 5:53Yes, please.
- 5:56I had no clue. He was in that many flicks.
- 5:59That's intense. When we started the podcast.
- 6:02There was enough film.
- 6:03So we do it like season by season basis 10 films and there were enough films in his
- 6:09life up and coming to fill a whole season and it was just like what the fuck are we
- 6:14doing? Like I think this man this man's in his I don't know.
- 6:17He's like in his 60s, but I don't think he's got any signs of stopping like him and
- 6:21Nick cage of the two guys. It's like, oh, any given week is like they're in a new
- 6:27project or like, you know, they're like kind of they've signed on to 10 films, even
- 6:32though that might change with cage.
- 6:34He says we only got like three or four left and he's got a television.
- 6:38Yeah, I am skeptical on the entire thing.
- 6:40You figure someone rolls out another five million bucks or so.
- 6:43It's like hard to turn that shit down.
- 6:45I have a theory about the about the prestige TV like projects he wants to do.
- 6:49I think he's been trying to do that for a while.
- 6:51I think things like Primal are like they're meant to be pilots, hence the very low CG
- 6:56budget primal is perfect.
- 6:59I don't know why you chose that one.
- 7:00Even stolen has like some like this.
- 7:04This could have been like a serialized thing.
- 7:07Yeah, maybe speaking of which this week we were talking about stolen and Red Rock West.
- 7:13And what do we do on this podcast?
- 7:15John, we watched two Nicolas Cage films and we decide which one's the Cajest in a
- 7:19bracket style situation where eventually we'll all go insane.
- 7:24I thought we just argued over dick jokes.
- 7:26We do that as well.
- 7:27Okay, but we will decide what cages ultimate cagey film is based on our opinions,
- 7:34which change episode by episode.
- 7:37So you don't need to go back and listen to the older episodes if you don't want to.
- 7:40But you should because they're funny.
- 7:42So Petrus, how long have you been talking about Nicolas Cage at this point?
- 7:47So I've been talking about Nicolas Cage since 2017 and I did something that was
- 7:52totally insane when I first started off.
- 7:54I did like my first 10 or 15 episodes solo.
- 7:58So not even I can even I can even rope in friends to come talk about movies.
- 8:02I just like fuck it.
- 8:03I want to do this.
- 8:04I want to start a podcast.
- 8:06I'm just going to be a mad man on a microphone laying on my living room floor talking
- 8:11about Nicolas Cage and yeah, X amount of years later.
- 8:14Here I am.
- 8:16Not any wiser probably a lot dumber, but still having fun, baby.
- 8:21Yeah, I mean to 2017 that would have been around that time where he was in that really.
- 8:26Everyone thought he was terrible.
- 8:29You forget all the good work.
- 8:30He's done.
- 8:31He didn't really have his comeback and is self-effacing like joke persona.
- 8:38Yeah, he was thick in the slump.
- 8:40Yeah, thick in the slump is a good phrase.
- 8:43It's pre Mandy.
- 8:45I think Mandy's the kind of film that like people go like, oh, OK.
- 8:49There's still some like gas left in the tank.
- 8:51Yeah.
- 8:52Yeah. Before then, Mandy to Pig was like the kind of like long arrival of Nicholas Cage
- 8:59again, like where people was second Renaissance.
- 9:01Yeah. Yeah.
- 9:02Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 9:02And the connoisseurs.
- 9:03That's cool.
- 9:04For me, the movie that really made me take notice was a color out of space like, oh,
- 9:12this guy, this guy knows what he's doing.
- 9:14He at least knows how to line up a project.
- 9:16Yeah.
- 9:17Yeah. There's like a weird trilogy that I think do it is Mandy color out of space and
- 9:23Pig, which are like what I've dubbed the man of the woods trilogy because all of them is
- 9:28kind of like living out in like a secluded area.
- 9:31And weirdly, they're all edited by Brett Buckman as well, which seems to be a weird connection
- 9:38about those films.
- 9:39And maybe he is personally responsible for Nick Cage's rise to prominence once again.
- 9:44Well, thanks, Buckman.
- 9:46Yeah.
- 9:47Good fucking work.
- 9:48Yeah.
- 9:48It'll be something to look for to look out for when we're doing Mandy and color out of space
- 9:53again.
- 9:53What?
- 9:54What the editing?
- 9:55Yeah.
- 9:55Don't those go up against each other?
- 9:57No.
- 9:58Okay.
- 9:58I was going to say that's brutal.
- 9:59Brutal head to head.
- 10:00Oh, no, we got color out of space versus vampires kiss.
- 10:03Oh, that's right.
- 10:03That's that's a brutal head to head to that one.
- 10:05That one's rough.
- 10:06Yeah.
- 10:06He's doing the same voice in those movies as well.
- 10:09He brings back the Peter Lowe voice when he kind of gets colored out of space and that
- 10:14movie when he when the colors go.
- 10:17I mean, he's kind of like when he's taken by magenta.
- 10:20When he gets that big T-Mobile money.
- 10:24Speaking of cell phones, I have opinions on cell phones and stolen.
- 10:29Should we just?
- 10:29This is the perfect place to start talking about cell phones.
- 10:32Yeah.
- 10:32Stolen was a 2012 flick Simon West was the director.
- 10:37Yeah, you want to Petros you want to give us a little breakdown of what this movie is about?
- 10:41Yeah, it is about a famous bank robber who has a penchant for Creedence Clearwater Revival
- 10:49does one job that goes wrong when MC Ganey fucks him over and he goes to prison for eight
- 10:57years and then when he gets out his daughter is kidnapped and he is trying to get her back
- 11:05in a race against the clock.
- 11:07I forgot how this movie really does kind of like hit the ground running though.
- 11:11Like I mean, there's a little bit of you.
- 11:12He went away for eight years, but then it it's pretty non-stop movement for the entire
- 11:18thing.
- 11:19So the thing that always takes me out of this film, which I forgot until I rewatched it
- 11:23eight years in prison.
- 11:24Everyone else has lived their years for lives for eight years.
- 11:27No one's gotten a haircut.
- 11:28Everyone's got the exact same hair.
- 11:30Listen, when you figure out good hairstyles you stick with a man.
- 11:33It's kind of a white people thing.
- 11:34It's like this is what sets me apart from that other person over there.
- 11:38It's like this is how everybody else knows who I am that and if you go and see the same
- 11:43barber they will just cut you'll say something different.
- 11:46They'll just go.
- 11:47Uh-huh.
- 11:47Yeah, I'm giving you the same haircut.
- 11:49I've given you for the last 10 years buddy.
- 11:50Like we're not changing this up and it's weird that obviously Nick Cage.
- 11:54His hair doesn't change soon as this is like a re team up with Simon West and the last
- 11:59time Nick Cage's character went to prison.
- 12:02He came out with luscious long locks in Conair.
- 12:05Yeah, much better.
- 12:07Yeah, he's just got the same boring boring old man haircut that he had at the beginning.
- 12:13Well, anytime I go down to my barber who they questionably speak English, but they Tina.
- 12:21Yeah.
- 12:21Oh yeah, nice.
- 12:23Every time they cut my hair like the lady I'm sure she doesn't recognize me, but she's
- 12:27just like same as last time and I was like, I'm sure I don't think you were the same person
- 12:32as last time, but that might be a fault of my own.
- 12:35I mean as you established you all look the same.
- 12:37Yeah, and you know what she gives me the same cut and I'll tell her like yeah, same as last
- 12:42time just not quite so short on top of boom like short on top and it's like, ah, whatever.
- 12:48It's yeah, it's a $15 hair.
- 12:50You did say short on top.
- 12:51No, I said not so short on top.
- 12:53You did say the word short on top.
- 12:55Yeah, yeah, that's all she's hearing.
- 12:57It's like there's nothing more kind of embarrassing for a human being than that moment when a
- 13:03barber uses that mirror to show you the back of it and you're like you just go yeah, yeah,
- 13:08okay.
- 13:09Yeah, yeah, yeah, I agree.
- 13:11Yeah, yeah, I'm sure you've done something like it's just we're so polite to just be
- 13:15like you can't go.
- 13:16I know.
- 13:16Can you put some back on now, please?
- 13:19Yeah, right.
- 13:19Fuck this up.
- 13:20Like yeah, there's nothing you can do at that point.
- 13:22I always hit him with the yep.
- 13:23That's the back of my head.
- 13:25Yeah, like what do you want me to do about it?
- 13:27It's like well, I'm never going to see this again.
- 13:29We all wear glasses too.
- 13:30They always show me when I can't see shit and I'm like, mm hmm.
- 13:33Yeah, feels like a haircut.
- 13:34Oh, I make them wait.
- 13:35I pull the glasses back out and I put them back on and I'm like, yeah, okay.
- 13:40Underneath the couch.
- 13:41It's too short.
- 13:42Exactly.
- 13:43So it really looks like I'm doing something dodgy down there.
- 13:45But no, I'm just getting my glasses back out slowly.
- 13:49It's the same question is like, did you find everything all right?
- 13:52You always say yes, because what are they going to do?
- 13:55One time I was like, no, actually.
- 13:56And the person was like, well, that sucks.
- 13:57And we moved on.
- 14:01So all the cell phones in this movie.
- 14:03Yeah, let's get back to your cell phone problem.
- 14:05Our blackberries.
- 14:07Yeah. And I love when the daughter's in the trunk of the cab and she like
- 14:12cuts a hole through the upholstery and she's dialing nine one one on that.
- 14:15Yeah, the blackberry blackberry keyboard.
- 14:17Yeah, the keyboard.
- 14:18But you can't see anything.
- 14:19It's just the finger.
- 14:20Like, how do you know what button you're pushing?
- 14:22Oh, man, I used to be able to text like unseen in my pocket.
- 14:26Yeah, I got really good at that.
- 14:28It also made it look really inappropriate that I was doing some shit in my pocket.
- 14:31But yeah, but when you can crank out like multiple questions on a T9
- 14:35like keyboard and like send him well, oh, you felt like a god.
- 14:40I love texting.
- 14:42I think there is there is one knock here in the movie and Nick Cage
- 14:46managed to set it up in like lightning speed because there is that scene
- 14:49where he's going from like the shop inside of like the train station.
- 14:56Yeah. To like set it up.
- 14:58We're literally in like 30 seconds.
- 15:00He's got it set up and he's got it redirecting the calls to his other phone.
- 15:04It's like, wow, this guy's done eight years in prison,
- 15:07but he knows how to work a phone.
- 15:09Yeah. Well, if it had been an iPhone, he would have been completely lost.
- 15:13That's true. Flummoxed. Yeah.
- 15:14Well, fortunately, criminals aren't allowed to use iPhones.
- 15:17So that's a good point. Thanks, Apple.
- 15:20Yeah. Also, I'm pretty sure he got like a keistered Blackberry in prison
- 15:24at some point, so he practiced.
- 15:26So it works.
- 15:28Just really kind of makes me think differently about texting from your pocket.
- 15:34When he'll prison wallet. Yeah.
- 15:37You know, those using those anus muscles to text.
- 15:41Yeah, that's that's the final form right there.
- 15:44Just kegaling his way into like a Domino's pizza delivery.
- 15:50Sending a text message to his daughter.
- 15:53I still love you.
- 15:55I mean, you want the dominance because you need to get that phone out somehow.
- 16:02Changing the subject ever so slightly, I just got a text about my new
- 16:05my new dog I'm getting that I am naming Benjamin Franklin Gates.
- 16:10Yeah. Good dog name.
- 16:12It's a very good dog name.
- 16:13He does have a Benjamin Franklin Gates face.
- 16:15Yeah. One of my bosses suggested I name the dog Nick Cage.
- 16:20I'm like, no, but I'll name it after Nick Cage character.
- 16:21My other boss just threw out Benjamin Franklin Gates.
- 16:23I'm like, that's too funny not to use.
- 16:27First name, Benjamin Franklin Gates.
- 16:29Last name. Yeah.
- 16:31I like how it's just one three names, one word.
- 16:33Benjamin Franklin Gates.
- 16:35It's like how you want to have your nephew be named.
- 16:38Well, I've I've recommended that every child be named after me.
- 16:42Nicholas Michael, you can bleep all that out.
- 16:45I'll crack some of that.
- 16:46You're also going to crack out.
- 16:47I know Tennessee is the middle name
- 16:51because they're the only 10 I see.
- 16:53If I'm getting doxed, you're getting doxed.
- 16:56We're doxing everyone. Petros, you want to get doxed?
- 16:58What's your address?
- 16:59My name's Petros.
- 17:00Joe, I know. Yeah, that's true.
- 17:02I'm searchable, baby.
- 17:03They're my name's strong.
- 17:08There's a much more famous person with my name out there.
- 17:10Sam, all right.
- 17:11Hmm. Yeah, I'm like I've always thought it's a blessing and a curse.
- 17:15People I want to remember me, remember me.
- 17:17People I don't want to remember me, remember me.
- 17:19So having a name like Petros, like, fuck.
- 17:22So this was our second watch through on this.
- 17:24I don't know if you went back to stolen at any point during your
- 17:28illustrious cage time.
- 17:30How did you find it this time?
- 17:33Um, well, I think I was a lot hotter on it the first time
- 17:37because it was the height of lockdown.
- 17:41And I think I was drinking far more than I am these days.
- 17:44So it's just like just so excited to be watching movies and not working
- 17:49and like just talking to people online about them.
- 17:52And that was the first time I ever watched it.
- 17:54And then like on this rewatch, I was like, oh, there are glaring
- 17:58things that are wrong with this movie.
- 18:00But I still came out the other side going,
- 18:03you know what? I think I like it.
- 18:04I was like, look on a letterbox.
- 18:06So there's like people I know going one star movie.
- 18:08I was like, this is a solid freestyle, baby.
- 18:11This is freestyle across the board for me.
- 18:14I'd give it three stars.
- 18:15Yeah, there's some continuity issues and a few like
- 18:18questionable moments and Vince's writing.
- 18:22I didn't I didn't care for the way his shit was written.
- 18:25But otherwise, you know, fucking solid movie.
- 18:28I absolutely love the chase sequence where like he jumps from roof to roof
- 18:32and his leg goes through the roof.
- 18:34Oh, yeah. He's like going to hop a banister and that just falls apart.
- 18:38That's, you know, very good.
- 18:40Like true post Katrina.
- 18:43New Orleans, like the place is falling apart.
- 18:45Beautiful city falling apart.
- 18:47This is like one of many films that Cage does in New Orleans.
- 18:50Right. And it just felt like, you know, at the time he's like, I live nearby.
- 18:54Like he's shooting shooting locally.
- 18:56Yeah, let's do it, baby.
- 18:58There's really no reason for it to be in New Orleans.
- 19:01Like, yeah, I mean, the conceit of it being Mardi Gras, I guess, because that
- 19:05helps the cabs be around.
- 19:07Yeah, but you could have like a parade in any town for sure.
- 19:10So like I was in a parade once.
- 19:13It was great. Nice.
- 19:15Well, because I have the whole thing about it being Mardi Gras,
- 19:17but then they changed the fact that the cabs don't have
- 19:22the like New York style thing on the roof.
- 19:25Like the kind of down there.
- 19:27Yeah, yeah.
- 19:28They don't have the like number on the roof, which obviously is a big
- 19:30plot point in this show, get the whole sequence of him like
- 19:34seeing the number.
- 19:35So obviously, like they've gone, oh, it's New Orleans, but we're going to
- 19:39we're going to make the cabs factually inaccurate
- 19:41just because this scene doesn't work without it.
- 19:44Yeah. We want to like noodle in on weird continuity stuff.
- 19:48The fact that
- 19:50what's noodle, what's his name?
- 19:52The guy from Human Target.
- 19:53I don't even know what that is.
- 19:55We talk about the villain, Vincent, or you're talking about striker.
- 19:58Striker. What's human?
- 20:00So the Fed?
- 20:01Not the main one, not the one with the hat, but his buddy.
- 20:03Oh, the fucking bad one who's like, I hope you got raped every day.
- 20:06Yeah, that guy. Yeah.
- 20:08Who I know from Boston Legal and he was in Human Target, which is a TV show.
- 20:12But over the course of the film, Nick Cage
- 20:16kicks his ass, handcuffs him, handcuffs him in an elevator and leaves him there.
- 20:20And at the end of the film, Nick Cage has murdered a man,
- 20:24escaped, like stolen some gold, escaped the authorities.
- 20:28And they, you know, strikers like, no, we're going to let him go.
- 20:31And at the end, there's a little gold left.
- 20:33He's like, if he doesn't throw it away, you know, you can book him.
- 20:36You can also book him on, you know, assault of you, several people murder.
- 20:41Yeah, but he did it in like good faith.
- 20:44It was it was a solid, you know, overall.
- 20:47Yeah, but that's for sure.
- 20:48But the other guy who wants to book him can still get him for all that.
- 20:51Right. Yeah. Mark Valley is the Mark Valley.
- 20:53That's yeah.
- 20:54So yeah, like I just love that little thing at the end where it's like,
- 20:58you know, don't throw it, throw it, don't throw it, throw it.
- 21:00It's like a million other things you could get them on breaking into a bank.
- 21:05Also, why didn't they investigate if he threw the fucking gold in the water?
- 21:08Couldn't you get the gold?
- 21:10Oh, it's sinking the mud.
- 21:11And you never find it that New Orleans mud is deep.
- 21:15Gold's heavy, as far as I know.
- 21:17Twenty seven pounds per brick.
- 21:19Mm hmm. What about slagged bricks?
- 21:22How many how many pounds was that nugget?
- 21:24I think they said it was 10 pounds of gold that he was throwing.
- 21:27So like less than half a brick.
- 21:30Even though it looked bigger.
- 21:31That'd be able to tell on like how how easy it was for him to throw.
- 21:35That'd be like that.
- 21:36They're like gold to me.
- 21:38I look like a like a pine cone.
- 21:40To be fair, pine cones float also.
- 21:42So it was if they really looked at it, they'd see the pine cone resurface.
- 21:46And when it's when it's sinking, it doesn't look like a real pine cone.
- 21:49Yeah, maybe it was a decorative pine cone.
- 21:52I don't know. That was just sitting on that outside table.
- 21:54How many people just have concrete pine cones like this is my decorative.
- 22:00I pull this out for nice occasions.
- 22:02I do appreciate the fake outwear because when the cops show up
- 22:05then he'd been shot and, you know, he passes out in the helicopter.
- 22:08The next scene is the daughter and the female character's name.
- 22:12I can't remember driving Riley, Riley driving, driving past a cemetery.
- 22:18And then it is go right past it to his RV where he's fine.
- 22:21Yeah. The most suspenseful moment of the movie.
- 22:24Yeah, right there.
- 22:26Well, that daughter just looks sad all the time.
- 22:28So you never know.
- 22:30Maybe daughter should have thrown her in the water.
- 22:34How many movies start with Nick Cage going to meet
- 22:39his daughter that he hasn't seen in years
- 22:41because he's been in jail with a stuffed animal?
- 22:43Well, at least at least two.
- 22:45I think there's more.
- 22:46I think we've had three stuffed animals.
- 22:49There was another stuffed animal, but I don't remember if it was a prison
- 22:51related stuffed animal instance.
- 22:54I think it was still an out of touch dad moment, though, where the kids like
- 22:58stuffed animal. I don't even I'm like 15, dad.
- 23:01Well, was it primal?
- 23:03Was he just trying to bring a great white jag?
- 23:06Yeah, great white jag for the kid.
- 23:08Kids love these things.
- 23:11We'll get it mounted. We'll get it stuffed.
- 23:13They'll be great.
- 23:14Now, you keep that thing alive.
- 23:16What I don't get is he's had eight years in prison
- 23:19and all he can muster up when he speaks to his daughter
- 23:22is that like kind of half arse note that just looks like he wrote it
- 23:27in the cab on the way over to me like he probably can't even get it out.
- 23:31It's like to do some English class.
- 23:34You should have done some English classes while you're in the big house, buddy.
- 23:37Maybe he got early release and he wasn't quite prepared.
- 23:40He's like, I'll get to this later.
- 23:42Like I got nothing but time so long as I'm here in the big house.
- 23:46But he had plenty of time on how to steal all that gold
- 23:48that hasn't moved in eight years. Gold's heavy.
- 23:51Yeah. Well, that was just an imagination thing.
- 23:52Yeah. He just really pictured it.
- 23:54He was bored. Yes.
- 23:57So what about Vincent's wig?
- 23:59That shit is fucking bad.
- 24:00Everything about Vincent was so gross, like,
- 24:04he's got missing fingers.
- 24:06No, thanks. One leg abomination
- 24:10gets set on fire, then run over.
- 24:13Oh, well, I mean, setting him on fire was fine.
- 24:16I was OK with that.
- 24:17We do have two movies this week that have sort of like an unkillable killer, though.
- 24:22Both die by impalement.
- 24:25No, actually shot. Second one was shot.
- 24:27Oh, that's true. He gets very shot, but impaled first.
- 24:30So like Vince as well looks like Peter Stromae playing
- 24:35the like villain from last action here.
- 24:38He looks like a mixture between Peter Stromae and the villain from last action here.
- 24:42You know, is it Tom Noonan plays like the? Yeah, exactly.
- 24:46Yeah, yeah, yeah. He looks like that.
- 24:48It's like, what the fuck was going on here?
- 24:50Like when you get that reveal of him, it's like Josh Lucas is a handsome guy.
- 24:55Do you know what I mean? It's like a kind of time store
- 24:58Matthew McConaughey.
- 24:59And then he's like, what the fuck have they done to this guy?
- 25:02What happened? That's what I bet.
- 25:04Like, I know he says all they keep telling is like,
- 25:07oh, you got him of a bad crowd.
- 25:08It's like, how bad is this crowd?
- 25:12You know, not like craps behind the the gas station.
- 25:16Bad. But I think a step below that.
- 25:20Well, yeah, I mean, I played craps behind a gas station.
- 25:22Those are usually pretty stand up guys.
- 25:24Yeah, I usually squat down when I'm playing craps.
- 25:28That's how you shoot, right? Yeah.
- 25:30Oh, we're talking about when I shoot.
- 25:31That's for Pornhub.
- 25:37You're going to have to add that to the outro now.
- 25:40No, we need to tell people where they can find us.
- 25:45Yeah. Nick will insert that no matter what.
- 25:48I will. I'm always inserting.
- 25:53I know we all I want to do is talk about stolen.
- 25:56But you keep distracting me with pornography.
- 25:59I so we talked about the terrible Australian character.
- 26:04Now let's talk about all the terrible acting from everyone else.
- 26:09I have a weird insults like calling the cage tapioca.
- 26:12Oh, man. That that was a good cab driver.
- 26:15Yeah, I'm going to start calling you tapioca.
- 26:18That's weird. It is weird.
- 26:20I don't even know what tapioca is.
- 26:22Oh, it's like pudding with like little like kind of jelly balls and balls.
- 26:28Yeah. Goo balls sort of like you guys have like Boba like bubble tea.
- 26:34Oh, yeah. Yes. It's like calling bubble tea.
- 26:36Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But like, like, so you're like a weird eggnog
- 26:40flavored pudding and very white, like tiny little like Boba balls in it.
- 26:46Yeah. You reckon the character is supposed to say that was originally supposed to be not white.
- 26:53Wasn't it the black cab driver?
- 26:55It was a black cab driver.
- 26:56Oh, that makes sense.
- 26:57Then yeah, I'm with him. I'm with him.
- 26:59Yeah. Call him tapioca.
- 27:00Yeah, it's it's apt.
- 27:02It's just a you've earned that right.
- 27:05And you know what?
- 27:06Getting called cracker eventually loses its meaning.
- 27:10So you got to come up with new new white things. Yeah.
- 27:14I don't know where he's going with that.
- 27:16Yeah. So there's a lot of great supporting characters,
- 27:19like especially in the cab world.
- 27:21I think the cabbies are all the best supporting characters.
- 27:25There's the guy who gets mugged in the beginning.
- 27:28He was a cabbie, right? Mm hmm.
- 27:30Or just like a alley person.
- 27:32He was just like, I was just putting a cardboard.
- 27:34It is like recycling. Yeah.
- 27:36But when Hoyt takes off, he's like, hey, your ride's leaving you like, oh, that sucks.
- 27:41Well, the thing also, thank you for pointing out the obvious.
- 27:44You get Bertrum or whatever his name was calling him tapioca.
- 27:49And then you get the the guy that works back at the dispatch guy.
- 27:54He's cool. Oh, yeah.
- 27:55The MVP of the movie right there.
- 27:58Love your single best.
- 28:00Lord. Yeah.
- 28:01Also a killer name. Yeah.
- 28:03I love anyone named Lafleur.
- 28:05Oh, and cabbie white guy cabbie, who's obviously the worst cabbie
- 28:11who got paid to just drive around that GPS location with a medallion.
- 28:14Oh, right. The reveal went there. Yeah.
- 28:17That's not my number.
- 28:18I thought you meant Vincent. I'm like, yeah, he's pretty bad.
- 28:20Oh, well, yeah.
- 28:22But he's at least important to the story.
- 28:25I love the reveal when Lafleur is like
- 28:28saying about like, oh, he really put the Williams up my up my children.
- 28:32And they're like, oh, they're in their 20s.
- 28:35It's like, yeah.
- 28:37Yes. He's a crime.
- 28:39Putting Willis and children.
- 28:41He's not my children. It's a specific.
- 28:44That's a term.
- 28:47Petrus, you're going to finally get us canceled.
- 28:50That's what I'm here to do.
- 28:52Infiltrate and all the other cage podcast just get canceled
- 28:55and skirk off into the night.
- 28:57That's right.
- 28:58That's what we were going to be only one.
- 29:00That was our plan.
- 29:04I know we're doing a pretty good job of collecting all the cage podcasts at this point.
- 29:09Yeah, we're going to harness everybody's power.
- 29:11Yes.
- 29:12What did also if you want to come for our finale sometime next year,
- 29:15we're going to watch the two head to head movies that are going to decide
- 29:19the best one in a in a movie theater somewhere in Seattle.
- 29:22So come on by. Yeah.
- 29:23Yeah. All you have to do is use your own money to get here.
- 29:25Yes, that's it.
- 29:26Put yourself up.
- 29:29But you can hang out with Darryl. Yeah.
- 29:32I know Darryl is not for this.
- 29:35I fucked Darryl that.
- 29:37What did Darryl call us fucking cowards for?
- 29:40I don't remember. I think we didn't put something in our butts.
- 29:44Something but related.
- 29:45It was definitely but related. Yeah.
- 29:47Yeah, I agree. That'll get you called cowards.
- 29:50Yeah, you cowards.
- 29:52Five fingers or nothing, boys.
- 29:54Oh, OK.
- 29:56I'm going up your ass.
- 29:57But that block of gold up your ass.
- 29:59Otherwise, you're nobody's to me.
- 30:02When you put the pine cone in your ass, do you do it the hard way first
- 30:06or like the hard way out?
- 30:08You do it. You do it.
- 30:10So the so the the crinkly bits are going in first.
- 30:14So it's going to be harder to pull out.
- 30:15Yeah. So it's real suffering.
- 30:18Yeah, you're doing real suffering. Yeah.
- 30:20It's a pain and pleasure kind of combo.
- 30:22You know, you got to have both. Yeah. Balance.
- 30:26It's like putting an umbrella in and then opening it and trying to pull it out.
- 30:29That's that's what we want.
- 30:30That's what we want. Full maximum pain.
- 30:32And that's when you really get the humorous visual of an umbrella going inverted.
- 30:36So I imagine you just like let out like one big rip of a fart
- 30:41and it like turns it inside out similar to like a high wind.
- 30:45And then you get out Scott free. That's smart. Yeah.
- 30:48That's the truth.
- 30:50But then you have to have a whole curvy handle part go in first.
- 30:55It's like a it's like the parachute on the back of a NASCAR.
- 30:58Yeah, exactly.
- 30:59Or not an NASCAR, but a dragster.
- 31:02What? I don't know cars.
- 31:03I don't either. Yeah.
- 31:05The Batmobile. The Batmobile.
- 31:06It's like the parachute on the back of the Batmobile.
- 31:08Just pop that umbrella. You're all good.
- 31:10Yeah. Use those kegels.
- 31:13Cage knows what he's doing. He's he's he's texting.
- 31:15He's texting from his office prison wallet.
- 31:17So he's got to pop those kegels and that umbrella pops out.
- 31:21There you go.
- 31:22So as you write down, go, go, gadget, but umbrella,
- 31:25then you just pop into your way out of jail.
- 31:27There you go. Just hanging down.
- 31:32I think I downloaded the wrong inspector gadget.
- 31:37I think the only relevant note that I have from watching this
- 31:39the first time that I immediately had the same thought was cops are dumb
- 31:42and they suck. Yeah.
- 31:44They really are the worst.
- 31:45Like from the beginning, it's like, oh, he's going to rob the diamond place.
- 31:48Don't follow them into the toy store
- 31:51where they broke into whatever their goal is.
- 31:56Just only look for them at their end location,
- 31:59which can not be anything other than the diamond place,
- 32:02even though you should know that there is a bank on the other side of the same block.
- 32:08I like how the bank vault when they're breaking into it,
- 32:12it actually only has two tumblers.
- 32:14You just need to do it's all.
- 32:16And then it's not like they're storing
- 32:19thousands of pounds of gold in there or something.
- 32:23Oh, is it like 10 million dollars?
- 32:24That's it, right? The 10 million dollars.
- 32:26Because it's cash.
- 32:27Yeah, it was 10 million in cash that they took,
- 32:30which was conveniently like a vacuum sealed for them.
- 32:34And then billions of dollars in gold, which is dumb. Yeah.
- 32:39How would you fence gold, especially in bar form?
- 32:43How would you fence it in giant burned ass nugget form?
- 32:48I mean, you re smelted into knives and then you just sell gold knives. Smart.
- 32:55I think you just make golden pine cones.
- 32:58Yeah, yeah. Right.
- 33:00Yeah. And then you'd stick them up your butt and get them out the hard way.
- 33:05Chinatown, that's where you like get rid of anything sketchy.
- 33:07Yeah, makes sense.
- 33:09You want to go to Chinatown later? Sure. OK.
- 33:12But nuggets.
- 33:14Also, he's very slow at running.
- 33:16Like he looks like he's trying really hard in this movie,
- 33:18and he is the slowest motherfucker.
- 33:20Do they just kind of speed it up a little bit like old man car chases?
- 33:25I don't think they sped anything up.
- 33:26It looks like he's really running hard and it's like, hmm,
- 33:29that is a jog at best.
- 33:32Like you're trying to run away from a bunch of cops with a lot of guns.
- 33:35Well, you probably don't. Happy cops.
- 33:37Like he is running away.
- 33:39I don't think you're just allowed to shoot someone.
- 33:40You're not supposed to just shoot someone in the back if they're fleeing.
- 33:43I mean, these are police we're talking. Yeah, I know.
- 33:46That's why I caught myself and said, you're not supposed to.
- 33:49Yeah, I'm sure he was not going to finish that sense.
- 33:52I'm sure he didn't get a lot of yard time to like work on his cardio.
- 33:58So that that is the flaw.
- 34:00That's actually probably a feature of prison is like,
- 34:04yeah, we're not going to give you cardio because if you try to escape,
- 34:07we want to catch you real fast.
- 34:09It's true. They should just give like lots of snacks.
- 34:11Yeah, ice cream.
- 34:14Just turkey based ice cream to keep you docile and fat.
- 34:18Yeah, I think that that probably would work.
- 34:20Probably wouldn't. I'll try it.
- 34:22I'll get an ice cream maker and I'll puree a turkey. Nice.
- 34:26Beaks and all.
- 34:29Yeah, I mean, do you guys have more stuff that you really want to say about still?
- 34:32I do want to talk about the awesome car chases like the very practical car chases.
- 34:37Oh, yeah. Like when they're in that parking garage.
- 34:41Yeah. Oh, right at the beginning. Yeah. Yeah, that's cool.
- 34:43Yeah. And then he jumps out like behind the car.
- 34:47Oh, man. And he's when he's got the stolen cab and he's like
- 34:52jumping stuff. Pretty good. Yeah, dude.
- 34:54That's all. I love a good car chase.
- 34:57I like a good practical car chase.
- 34:58Yeah, there's that moment as well when he like breaks his own farm
- 35:02to get out of the handcuffs, knocks out the two cops.
- 35:05And I'm pretty sure the the the like car flips over
- 35:09and like dark side grinds across a rail.
- 35:12Jimmy is like fucking gnarly.
- 35:13He's like, yeah, come on.
- 35:15He's like, give me flashbacks playing Tony Hawk Pro Skater three.
- 35:18Baby. Yeah.
- 35:19The action in this movie is pretty pretty solid for 2012.
- 35:24Yeah. Yeah. For a 2012 Nicolas Cage movie.
- 35:26It's pretty fun. Yeah.
- 35:28It keeps the story moving really well and never feels like it really lags.
- 35:33It's a steady pair of hands like Simon West, right?
- 35:36Because obviously some of his films aren't the best.
- 35:38Like it's the guy who directed Con Air.
- 35:40He knows how to direct action.
- 35:42So even if everything else falls down, like the action's
- 35:46really fucking solid in this movie.
- 35:48Yeah. Just a few complaints about some writing. Yeah.
- 35:51But otherwise, I think it's a solid movie. Same.
- 35:55Worthy of a second round. Yeah.
- 35:57Yeah. Petrus in the Venn diagram of good cage, good movie, bad cage, bad movie,
- 36:02good, bad, bad, good.
- 36:03Where would you slot this guy?
- 36:06Oh, this is a hard one, because it's like my like
- 36:11my head says bad movie, but my heart says good movie
- 36:18and my heart says good cage.
- 36:22Yeah, I think it's good cage, bad movie.
- 36:25Is that right?
- 36:26I don't know. I'm second guessing myself now.
- 36:28Was it bad cage, good movie?
- 36:30I don't know. This is a curveball right now, fellas.
- 36:35Because I unashamedly love this movie despite it being shit.
- 36:38I like forgive the fact that the cage is pretty ropey in it as well.
- 36:41I was going to I was going to put it in the bad cage. Good movie.
- 36:44It's a fine like movie. It's a solid.
- 36:46It's you know, it moves quick.
- 36:49It's got a decent story writing to me and cage isn't the most cagey about it.
- 36:54Like this movie isn't served by Nicolas Cage being in.
- 36:57It probably could have been a number of other actors
- 37:01and been just as good.
- 37:03Yeah, we wouldn't have been watching it, but true.
- 37:06We don't watch anything without Nicolas Cage at this point. No.
- 37:10I think it's a. Bad cage, bad movie that I love.
- 37:16Yeah, I think that's a good caveat to it,
- 37:19because like it is a bad movie, but it is also fun
- 37:22and I did not have a bad time. Right.
- 37:25Yeah. Cinematically, it offers nothing to the world, but it's enjoyable
- 37:30and it's only 90 minutes long.
- 37:32So that's pretty good.
- 37:33All I want at this point.
- 37:36It begs the question as well, would this have been any better
- 37:39with the two people they went with before Cage, which was Clive Owen
- 37:44and Jason Statham? Yes.
- 37:47Statham, I could see this being pretty fun.
- 37:49And it makes sense that he would be so shitty at talking to his daughter.
- 37:53I could barely talk.
- 37:55Exactly. Yeah.
- 37:56Like a neanderthal. Yeah.
- 38:00I think it's a terrific, terrific film.
- 38:02Excellent way to spend a Sunday morning.
- 38:07Yeah, I know. I watched it this morning as well, and it was
- 38:09it was a fine way to start my morning with my with a cup of coffee,
- 38:13dog, cat and stolen.
- 38:16Any final thoughts on this film before we move on?
- 38:20The only thing I have to say on this film is I love the reference to Conn
- 38:25when the code name MC Ganey uses his diamond dog.
- 38:29I was kind of like there is like a cage devotee being like,
- 38:33oh, they're referencing that and the like bunny thing.
- 38:36It's like, oh, he's got that fucking bunny.
- 38:39Like put that bunny back in the box, baby.
- 38:41I really enjoyed Vince's line about being broker than a dead dick dog,
- 38:48which for me is just a reference back to Army of One
- 38:52where Nicolas Cage makes some comment about a broke dick dog.
- 38:56Well, wouldn't it Army of One be a reference to this?
- 38:59Maybe. I don't know.
- 39:00But I saw Army of One before I saw this.
- 39:03So that time works.
- 39:05That and on second watch as well, when Vince like
- 39:09he re kidnaps Mia, like puts her in the puts her in the trunk.
- 39:14Yeah, it's a little kid who sees him.
- 39:15What I didn't notice the first time is he like he flips him flips in the bag.
- 39:19Like secretly like, fuck you, you creepy old fucking weirdo.
- 39:25Yeah. Well, Vince is just putting the willies in all the children.
- 39:29Yeah, of course.
- 39:30Red Rock, Red Rock West, Red Rock West.
- 39:34I love this movie. I still love this movie.
- 39:37It's solid from the beginning.
- 39:39The the score, the opening shots of him getting out of the car
- 39:43and like one arm push ups.
- 39:45Yeah. Doing his sick ass one arm push ups, proving that he's a badass
- 39:50is busted up knee.
- 39:51Yeah, it's his stern and bush.
- 39:53Got to have stern and bush.
- 39:55This movie, it gets me every time.
- 39:57I love the the story, the pacing.
- 40:00Laura Flynn Boyle, as terrible as she is.
- 40:05Like she offers nothing.
- 40:07She's dead behind the eyes.
- 40:10President Cooper himself. Yeah.
- 40:12Yeah. And it's like weirdly, all three of them are like
- 40:17and Dennis Hopper are like, yeah, David Lynch alum as well.
- 40:21Is it kind of feels like a kind of like this
- 40:24weirdly could be a David Lynch film.
- 40:27It would be hella a lot weirder.
- 40:29But like it's kind of in that world that he likes to play in, like
- 40:33kind of, I don't know.
- 40:35Yeah, I love these kind of neo Western noirs.
- 40:38Yeah, we recently covered White Sands on getting to fo you,
- 40:43which is like a very similar film to this.
- 40:45Well, like to fo pretends to be a guy and then things go wrong,
- 40:52which is basically the the the the premise of this film as well.
- 40:56And I kind of I love that this this film is so tight and such a great
- 41:01like thriller that like even Lara Flynn Boyle, you can you can forgive,
- 41:07even though she could have been she could have been replaced with
- 41:10Mary Elizabeth, Masha and Tony or I don't know.
- 41:13Yeah. Any any other kind of cardboard stand?
- 41:17Yeah. Just real quick for our listeners.
- 41:20The whole premise of this film is Nick Cage down on his luck trying to get a job
- 41:24in oil fields of Wyoming has a bumleg so doesn't get it.
- 41:28Rolls into the town of Red Rock and is offered a job
- 41:32only to find out that it's to kill the bar owner, Wayne's wife and hilarity then ensues.
- 41:39Yeah. So he mistaken he's mistaken for somebody else because of his license plate.
- 41:43License plate gets gets roped into this whole assassination attempt
- 41:49and that Lara Flynn Boyle will turn on its head, try to get him to kill Wayne.
- 41:56And he just takes the down payment on both assassinations and skips town only to like you should.
- 42:01Yeah, which is the correct move. Yeah.
- 42:04And a pre Internet era. Yeah.
- 42:06This movie, like every part of this movie could have just been solved with a cell phone.
- 42:10What kind of cell phone? A Blackberry?
- 42:13Because because that didn't get what's her face out of the back of that cab.
- 42:17Sorry, Mia.
- 42:18Lyle shows up a week late.
- 42:20Got to call them.
- 42:22Hit the guy on the side of the road.
- 42:24Could have just called 911.
- 42:26I mean, pre Internet era, it wouldn't make sense,
- 42:29but it's just looking at things through time and going back to things like this movie couldn't exist now.
- 42:35Yeah. Cinema was a lot better before cell phones.
- 42:37Yeah. Well, yeah, that's why you get like loads of great filmmakers making period films, right?
- 42:43Soon as you have the invention of the phone, it's like it just ruins everything.
- 42:48Like you say, with this film, it is not just that it feels like it's just a movie.
- 42:53It feels like obviously it wouldn't work in a modern setting.
- 42:57It is very much the archetype of when people say they don't make them like they used to.
- 43:04It's like this kind of trashy mid budget thriller for adults isn't really made these days,
- 43:11especially not for like cinematic release.
- 43:14This is like the kind of thing.
- 43:16If you're lucky goes the streaming and like I don't think it would be near as good as like a film like Red Rock West is.
- 43:23No, because they put like Ryan Reynolds or something in it.
- 43:26You wouldn't just put a guy who looks like a guy because this is peak Nick Cage.
- 43:30Just looking like a normal dude era.
- 43:33Yeah. Yeah.
- 43:35You did get me thinking that I'd love to see a thriller set in the height of the pager era.
- 43:41Like things are getting really tense and like he's like, oh, hold on.
- 43:45I got to I got to find a pay phone and I just wander off and like call somebody back.
- 43:50I go there in the cab and the cab's gone.
- 43:54We kind of got that with Blade Runner.
- 43:56Oh, yeah. I do love how science like all this great science fiction we've had for decades.
- 44:02And the one thing no one could ever imagine was a cell phone except Star Trek.
- 44:07Star Trek got that one. Yeah, they had that pretty much cracked forever ago.
- 44:11Speaking of cracking. Watching.
- 44:15I watched Red Rock West last night, stolen this morning, then went over to Nixon, watched Red Rock West again
- 44:20and watching stolen Red Rock West back to back like this could be the same guy.
- 44:25Yeah, it's easy to think that he runs off with that money, learns to steal banks because he makes a reference to stealing banks.
- 44:32One of his early lines in the film is like, maybe I'll maybe I'll rob a bank.
- 44:36I think this film does really good work in portraying that like he is a good guy.
- 44:43Like he's a kind of white hat character because he has the opportunity to steal that money in the gas station and doesn't do it.
- 44:50And like every kind of opportunity, like there are, I guess the one thing that this film falls down on,
- 44:55and I guess it's like a big part of it is like what pussy will do to a motherfucker?
- 45:00Because soon as like Lara Flynn Boyle is like, let's run away to Mexico.
- 45:04He's like kind of like pussy struck and is like, OK, let's do this.
- 45:08And he's like, if he had just kind of like stayed with Dwight Yoakam in that like truck.
- 45:13Fuck yeah. Just get north. Stay with Dwight Yoakam, baby. Get out of there.
- 45:17Neither Lara Flynn Boyle or Wayne, whatever is JT Walsh.
- 45:22JT Walsh. Neither of them play stand up people like morally upright individuals.
- 45:29They both paid him to knock off the other one.
- 45:33It wouldn't hurt my feelings if he just like noped the fuck out of Wyoming.
- 45:36No, not at all. Especially with Dwight Yoakam, that dude, his character fucking rules.
- 45:40Everything about him was so good. How's that tickle you?
- 45:43Yeah. Do I look scared to you? Kind of badass.
- 45:47I forgot I was texting Peter Wall.
- 45:50This was while I was watching it last night and I completely forgot that Wayne is the sheriff.
- 45:55Oh, yeah. So that little reveal of like he didn't do the murder.
- 46:00And then like he has to wait for the sheriff to show up at the hospital
- 46:02and Wayne walks in with his cowboy hat on like, ah, you done fucked up.
- 46:07There's just this whole thing is just like a crisscross, double cross, uncross cross,
- 46:12kind of a situation.
- 46:14Yeah, everything's so circular, even like leaving and returning to Red Rock.
- 46:20Yeah, that's a great little motif, right?
- 46:21Every time it's like I'm getting out. No, I'm coming back.
- 46:25Like every night when she says we got to go back to get the money.
- 46:28So no, you kind of go there.
- 46:31It is one of those movies where like you are every time he makes a decision.
- 46:35You like even though I've watched this countless amounts of time, I'm like, just don't do it.
- 46:39You always are willing to do to to do the opposite each time.
- 46:44If like the guy he hits with the car, if that guy would have just died right then.
- 46:50He'd have been home free. He wouldn't.
- 46:51He could be. Yeah.
- 46:54I got another fuck two bullets in your stomach and you get hit by a car
- 46:57and you have the audacity to stay alive and make things hard for the main character.
- 47:02God damn rude.
- 47:05But surely if that is the case, he could say, no, it wasn't.
- 47:07It was it was a woman who shot me.
- 47:10Well, that's a good point, right?
- 47:11Like, unfortunately, he was in the coma, but yeah, fucking comas.
- 47:15Well, our convenient.
- 47:17Even the deputy is just like, you want to put it on this guy,
- 47:20the guy who brought him into the hospital.
- 47:23Yeah. The way they speak to him, though, when they're like when he's like,
- 47:27they're like, oh, where's your car and stuff like that?
- 47:29And he's like, oh, just going to go move it.
- 47:31Like, I'm not going anywhere.
- 47:32He's like, well, these two bullets say otherwise, buddy.
- 47:35Like, you got to stay here.
- 47:36It's like, you know, the deputies come in strong.
- 47:39I consider it like when it gets to like the latter stages of it, they're kind of like
- 47:44see, well, they get they learn about Wayne's fucking.
- 47:47Was it Kevin? His real name?
- 47:48Like, yeah, Kevin. Yeah.
- 47:50I want a list and stuff like that.
- 47:51It's like then they're like real, real nice guys.
- 47:54But to begin with, they're coming in real fucking thick and hard on cage.
- 47:58It's probably the most action those guys have ever seen.
- 48:01So they're a little nervous.
- 48:02They're like, OK, we we're going to do it.
- 48:03We're going to get in there.
- 48:04We're going to get this guy.
- 48:06Let me see your butt.
- 48:08Oh, shit. I mean, look at these bullets.
- 48:11What?
- 48:13Yeah, it came out before I got the sentence right.
- 48:17I don't know, man.
- 48:18Every interaction with cops I've ever had ends with let me see your butt.
- 48:21Yeah. This movie also has the ending where the cops just let him get away
- 48:26because he's on the train.
- 48:28He's pushed Laura Flynn Boyle out of the train with the money.
- 48:31Great. They're like, I love.
- 48:32And the cops are right behind them.
- 48:33They stopped to get Laura Flynn Boyle and they just let the train keep going.
- 48:36Like they don't keep following him.
- 48:38I mean, they got the money for the most part.
- 48:40And at least one person who was complicit.
- 48:44Yeah. Yeah.
- 48:45That seems like a good day on the force.
- 48:47Back in the 90s, tracking drifters was a lot harder
- 48:52because they didn't have cell phones.
- 48:53Now, they just have cell phones.
- 48:54Yeah. All drifters have cell phones.
- 48:58They keep them in their bindle.
- 48:59Have you ever had a call your butthole?
- 49:02Have you ever had a homeless guy ask you for money and then like prefer
- 49:05or like pull out like a square?
- 49:09So you could like pay with your phone.
- 49:11Like you have a bank account, sir.
- 49:13Yeah. I mean, I've seen it and it's like, oh, no, I'm definitely not tapping on that.
- 49:19That was turned down like free food.
- 49:21I don't really like tuna.
- 49:23It's got a free buddy.
- 49:25Scrape it off. Have some soggy bread.
- 49:27I don't know. Yeah. Yeah.
- 49:29Of the Mayo.
- 49:30I had a good one once, though, where I was by Dick's Burgers.
- 49:34And I was like, do you want a burger?
- 49:35And he was like, you know what, man?
- 49:36Like, could you get me a salad from somewhere?
- 49:39And I was like, yes, I can do that. Yeah.
- 49:42I think I asked this on the first time we went around this movie.
- 49:45But why the fuck do they try and jump the train?
- 49:49Because it's cool.
- 49:50And well, because there's a dead cop like a block away.
- 49:53And they just drove away from the scene.
- 49:55I don't know. I feel like you could have not gone to all that trouble.
- 49:59Like they basically almost die.
- 50:01Well, did you watch the recent John Oliver on freight trains? I did not.
- 50:06Freight trains can be incredibly long. Yeah. Like miles long. OK.
- 50:10Well, this makes more sense.
- 50:11So you don't want to get stuck behind it.
- 50:12And if anything happens, you know, especially if you just killed a cop.
- 50:15Yeah. It'll shut down an intersection for a long time.
- 50:17Why try and outrun the train when you could drive the other direction
- 50:21and the train will end quicker?
- 50:22Allegedly, it could be miles long, but it's going at a certain speed.
- 50:26That way, you're going a certain speed.
- 50:27I feel like there's a math problem here that we can solve.
- 50:30Follow you that way.
- 50:31If you get in front of the train and crossover now, their host.
- 50:36I guess they go the other way.
- 50:38Well, then they would definitely lose you because you'd have time to escape.
- 50:41I mean, to be fair, there are only two other cops.
- 50:44There was three.
- 50:45Yeah, that's that poor woman who's doing like the dispatch.
- 50:49I was just.
- 50:50Yeah, the body in the background while she's on the dispatch
- 50:54is my favorite part of that.
- 50:56There is a hospital there.
- 50:57Don't touch anything.
- 50:59It's all evidence, including the corpse that we're propping up behind you.
- 51:04I think the gnarliest move is that Hopper shoots that guy.
- 51:07And then the next scene you see him, he's just eaten that sandwich.
- 51:09And he's like, I love turkey.
- 51:12Yeah, turkey sandwich. My favorite.
- 51:14Like Hopper, like loses it as this movie goes on.
- 51:17Like he shoots out his own car's
- 51:21driver's side window to prove a point,
- 51:24a point that nobody can make afterwards because nobody can hear
- 51:27the point being made.
- 51:29He's a good villain in this.
- 51:30Like he he seems monstrous, right?
- 51:33Like he continues, especially the way that he becomes hard to kill
- 51:36until getting shot 11 times or whatever it is. Nine.
- 51:40He seems like a good fucking monster.
- 51:44Yeah. Yeah.
- 51:45I do love how the movie that immediately followed this was Super Mario Brothers
- 51:50and Hopper's IMDB.
- 51:51Those both came out in 93.
- 51:53When did he die? Did he die after that?
- 51:552010. OK.
- 51:57So I mean, he did technically die after that.
- 51:59But yeah, just, you know, he still got upcoming projects.
- 52:04He's got he's got rereleases of like early voice narration work he's done.
- 52:09But when I IMDB him today, it was like three upcoming projects.
- 52:12I'm like, what?
- 52:14Hardest working man in Hollywood right there, baby.
- 52:16I love that like cage as well as kind of like done his Lyle
- 52:20from Texas in Sympathy for the Devil,
- 52:24which is essentially like an hour and a half of that scene
- 52:28where they're like in the car and he's like going by gunpoint
- 52:31telling him to drive.
- 52:32It's just like him and Joe Kinnaman.
- 52:34And yeah, I love that movie.
- 52:36That's got good tension.
- 52:37Oh, yeah. No, that's a good.
- 52:38That's a good little connection there.
- 52:41Nick Cage had better hair and a better jacket.
- 52:43Yeah, the red hair was terrific. Yeah.
- 52:47Yeah, but like Lyle from Texas is like, it's great.
- 52:49Like with the kind of like Western shirt.
- 52:52I love his kind of like get up and it's kind of introduction as well.
- 52:55It's like almost like
- 52:57it's almost like a scene out of Raising Arizona,
- 52:59the way that like Cage is like up against the bumper.
- 53:03Like that kind of shot is amazing.
- 53:04And he's like, if I didn't get my brakes fixed, boy, you'd be
- 53:08I'd be picking you out of my radio.
- 53:11My radiator. Yeah, it's amazing.
- 53:13Like that kind of like what half hour into the movie.
- 53:16You get the introduction of it's just so great.
- 53:18It's just like the tension and release in this film
- 53:21and like the little scenes like when he's climbing on the roof
- 53:25and getting onto Dwight Yocum's truck, it's just like
- 53:28it's just pure visual crack of like, yes, come on.
- 53:31I love that shit.
- 53:32Everything shot really well to be like,
- 53:35these are the actions that I wanted them to take the most.
- 53:38Like, yeah, get on top of the the bar.
- 53:41Perfect way to escape.
- 53:43Somehow there's a bunch of construction materials. OK.
- 53:45They were working on high quality, high quality American wood.
- 53:48That is good.
- 53:49You know, they don't make like two by fours like they used to.
- 53:52I had to I had to tell people this this morning.
- 53:55It's they're just not the same.
- 53:57They they use younger trees now.
- 53:59The the ring's structure and the fibers aren't as tight.
- 54:02I do. Your house is burned down too fast now. Right.
- 54:05I do love the scene, though, where he's like tight rope
- 54:08walking on the two by four over the truck.
- 54:10And you just got this scene of Wayne just like looking around.
- 54:14And you just see him. It's it's like a cartoon.
- 54:16It's the Spider-Man rule.
- 54:17Villains never look up.
- 54:20Yeah, it's a great like it's almost like a split dioptic shot, isn't it?
- 54:24But you've got them both in focus, like that's great.
- 54:27Like all of the kind of like setups in this
- 54:30like is just these kind of small little scenes that kind of all play into it,
- 54:34which is like one bad decision after another.
- 54:37Oh, like when Lyle is up in the bathroom and they shut off the tub water
- 54:42and he turns around just in time for Cage to throw that statue at his head.
- 54:47The equestrian statue. Yeah.
- 54:48Such a good one.
- 54:50He just like pops out. Doink.
- 54:54And then just like cold coxum after that.
- 54:55Yeah. It's Hopper's line as well when he
- 54:59eventually talks to JT Walsh's character and he's like, he's like, did they get away?
- 55:03So I've been I've been staring at my eyelids for the past hour.
- 55:06Wayner, I don't know what the fuck's going on.
- 55:10I love Wayner.
- 55:11Wayner is such a good nickname for that fucking guy.
- 55:14It just sounds like wiener every time.
- 55:16But like if somebody from Texas was just just calling you a wiener.
- 55:20All right, Wayner.
- 55:22Reach for the sky.
- 55:26I'd like I'd I'd be interested to know how much of this is Dennis Hopper
- 55:30just like spitballing.
- 55:31Jimmy, I'm just like like that delivery.
- 55:35Like when he yeah, when he says about like the turkey sandwich, like turkey.
- 55:38My favorite is like, I just feel like that's Dennis Hopper.
- 55:42It's like they actually had a turkey sandwich on set.
- 55:45And he's like, can I just eat that?
- 55:46Yeah, 93. He's got the most star power out of anybody in the movie.
- 55:50So he definitely got the most leniency in this.
- 55:54I would love to have Dennis Hopper just ad lib at my wedding, funeral,
- 56:00something like that. Yeah, you're too late.
- 56:03No, not for either of those, right?
- 56:06Well, because he's dead. Right.
- 56:08Yeah, I'm neither dead nor married.
- 56:10So yeah, but he can't do it when you do die or get married.
- 56:13He's got upcoming projects. Yeah.
- 56:16Well, I have we did.
- 56:18We broke we briefly touched on this before we got started.
- 56:20And Nick and I both kind of have looked at each other when we were watching this.
- 56:24The sex scene where his silhouetted belt buckle
- 56:28definitely looks like an erect penis. Yeah, 100 percent.
- 56:31I don't know. I don't know if that was an accident.
- 56:32And they were like, oh, that's a happy accident.
- 56:34That looks like a dick for sure.
- 56:36Or if they engineered that either way.
- 56:40Yeah, it was well shot. I was a big fan.
- 56:44It's definitely like that would have been the place in the VHS
- 56:48that would have been worn out where you put it on pause.
- 56:50Do you mean a rewound in a bunch?
- 56:52Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 56:54That whole bit just goes fuzzy.
- 56:55I was definitely there.
- 56:57That's why you can't find VHS is this movie anymore. No.
- 57:00I'm pretty sure that that was
- 57:04engineered into the movie.
- 57:05They're like, OK, well, interest may be waning.
- 57:08Like we've put them in this hotel room.
- 57:11Let's let's make people think that they see cages dork
- 57:14and we'll we'll just move with that.
- 57:17Those early days, he might not have had the star power to say no.
- 57:19Probably could have gotten away with it.
- 57:21We might have seen it.
- 57:22Yeah, this is this is pre Oscar wins.
- 57:25So I reckon he could have been game for it as well.
- 57:27You know, my hog on show. Let's go, baby.
- 57:30You want to be a star, don't you?
- 57:33I mean, Harvey Weinstein's just in the background like, yes.
- 57:40Oh, well, anything revealed from watching this another time?
- 57:44I mean, at this point, you've seen it a dozen times or so or whatever.
- 57:49But any any fresh insights?
- 57:51It's a banger. I still love it.
- 57:52This is still my favorite discovery of this whole project,
- 57:56because most of these other movies I've heard about and the ones
- 57:58I haven't heard about, there's reasons I didn't hear about them.
- 58:01But this 93 classic, which has got a pretty high score on Rotten Tomato, is awesome.
- 58:07It's one of Cage's like highest rated movies on Rotten Tomatoes
- 58:11and just feels like criminally underseen.
- 58:14Like it's one of those ones that you mention to people
- 58:16and they kind of like look at you glassy eyed and it's like, no,
- 58:21it's really fucking great.
- 58:22Like, like I think it's because nobody can pronounce the title.
- 58:26I mean, Red Rock West, Rock West really have to enunciate it like a madman.
- 58:31So like, I'm not going to remember that.
- 58:35Nick, was it you met someone recently who was like, Oh, well, I mean, it's not met.
- 58:40But I know somebody like I was they were just discovering that I had this podcast
- 58:45and they're like, Well, have you talked about Red Rock West yet?
- 58:47And I was like, yes. But also, awesome.
- 58:49I'm so glad that that's the movie that your mind goes to.
- 58:52Yeah. Future future guest, Seth, his mom for Halloween last year,
- 58:57she heard about the podcast and she was like, Red Rock West,
- 58:59have you watched that one yet? I was like, we did it recently.
- 59:01And she's like, good movie.
- 59:03I feel like this is a similar to like in unbearable
- 59:07weight, how everybody just associates Nicolas Cage with another movie like,
- 59:11oh, that Moonstruck motherfucker. Yeah.
- 59:13Yeah. It's the Moonstruck guy from Croods or whatever.
- 59:16Like everybody's everybody's got their Nicolas Cage movie
- 59:19that doesn't have to be part of the Trinity.
- 59:23It's I recommend this movie to everybody.
- 59:27I can't. Well, now. Yeah.
- 59:29This and now that I would consistently tell people to watch.
- 59:32Well, because this this is one of the ones as well.
- 59:34It's like Cage doesn't he's not really dining out on what makes him cage.
- 59:40He has a couple of moments like when he like says to Lara Flynn Boyle,
- 59:44it's like that.
- 59:45Freddie Oz, he's dead.
- 59:47And all like, you know, she's like, What about Mexico?
- 59:50It's like, Fuck Mexico.
- 59:51Like all of those all of those moments like it's like,
- 59:55oh, that's that's like the cage we pay to go see.
- 59:58But like everything feels like I have a thing on my podcast.
- 1:00:02So it's like and cage freak outs and everything in this is like,
- 1:00:06well, I'm sure if you were put in this pressure cooker situation,
- 1:00:10you would probably would be reacting the way he is.
- 1:00:13So like, yeah, I think I think this is this is up.
- 1:00:16There's like one of the best cage films for me.
- 1:00:19That's a very fair assessment.
- 1:00:21There for me. Yeah.
- 1:00:23Well, we're not shy about how much we love this movie here.
- 1:00:27So yeah, absolutely.
- 1:00:29It's fair to assume that it's a walk off winner anytime we watch it.
- 1:00:36Which brings us to.
- 1:00:38Well, good cage bad movie.
- 1:00:39Well, I don't even think we have to worry about that at this.
- 1:00:41As good cage, good movie.
- 1:00:43Good cage, good movie.
- 1:00:44You cage. Good movie.
- 1:00:46Between these two films, Petros, which one would you put forward in the bracket?
- 1:00:51With the caveat, your opinion does not matter whatsoever to what actually goes ahead.
- 1:00:56Oh, it's obviously stolen, isn't it?
- 1:00:58Yeah, good choice.
- 1:01:00It's Red Rock West. Red Rock West has got my heart.
- 1:01:03As I mentioned, maybe off air like, yeah,
- 1:01:07I had the good fortune of doing a video essay about Nick Cage's performance in this film.
- 1:01:12And I did that for free because I love this film so much.
- 1:01:18That and they didn't offer me any money.
- 1:01:22Exposure, baby.
- 1:01:25But yeah, I just think it's Red Rock West is, as I said, one of the best
- 1:01:30Nick Cage movies, and it's always a joy because it is underseen.
- 1:01:35It feels like you're in like a kind of, I don't know, like a secret club
- 1:01:40of like people who have seen it and like like like you're saying,
- 1:01:43like when people mention it and you kind of have that knowing like,
- 1:01:47oh, yeah, we've both seen this.
- 1:01:49Isn't that great?
- 1:01:50And like, I just hope to share the film with like more people.
- 1:01:56And like maybe years to come, it will be like the cult classic that it is.
- 1:02:02I know it's like, yeah, U.S.
- 1:02:04It's really hard to get a hold of unless like you buy an old DVD of it.
- 1:02:08Maybe if it gets a 4K, eventually we'll know the truth.
- 1:02:12Was it his dick or was it a bellbuckle, baby?
- 1:02:16We'll have to compare it to a lot of Zonda Lee.
- 1:02:18Yeah, I'm a Dick Truther.
- 1:02:20Dick Truther.
- 1:02:22I subscribe to the flat dick theory
- 1:02:25that wasn't his dick.
- 1:02:26He's got flat dick.
- 1:02:29So you guys, what do you think?
- 1:02:31I ask knowing already, I can't follow that with a joke.
- 1:02:34So I guess.
- 1:02:36Oh, 100 percent Red Rock West.
- 1:02:38It's a great movie. Sorry, stolen.
- 1:02:41Also a fine movie, but it's not a great movie.
- 1:02:44I will definitely go back and rewatch Red Rock West.
- 1:02:46If I never see stolen again, I'm not going to be upset about it.
- 1:02:48I mean, I'll probably watch stolen again.
- 1:02:50I'll probably actually remember which one it is because I keep getting it
- 1:02:54mistaken with like Rage, which is a far so like inferior, inferior movie.
- 1:03:00But it's you know, that's the whole like premise of like the the daughter
- 1:03:06and what happened and whatnot and figuring it out.
- 1:03:09And he's got crime jackets and a criminal past.
- 1:03:12It's crime song.
- 1:03:14He's got crime music in this one.
- 1:03:15Dada da da da da da. No, but he's got his CCR.
- 1:03:19He's got his rich.
- 1:03:20He's got a CCR ritual in this and then he's got the lowrider ritual in.
- 1:03:23Yeah, I'm 60. Yeah, true.
- 1:03:27It's easily confused with that whole spate of like 2010s
- 1:03:30movies where it was just like a single word.
- 1:03:33Do you mean justice stolen?
- 1:03:36Take it. Just like, yeah.
- 1:03:39Well, what is going on?
- 1:03:41Yeah. Give me a title that reminds me what I'm watching
- 1:03:44a year later when I rewatch it.
- 1:03:46Yeah. Red Rock West. Exactly.
- 1:03:48I always know Red Rock West.
- 1:03:51It's just hard to pronounce. Yeah.
- 1:03:53Which is fine.
- 1:03:55Makes it more memorable.
- 1:03:57Flat Dick Theory.
- 1:03:58Mm hmm. All right, Pedros.
- 1:04:00Where can we we've talked about already, but for a good outro clip,
- 1:04:04where could we find you on the Internet?
- 1:04:05Where could people follow you?
- 1:04:07So you can follow Caged in Caged in Pod on Twitter, Instagram and Tiktok.
- 1:04:14And you can find Getting Defoe You on all the same places,
- 1:04:18which is Defoe You Pod.
- 1:04:20Both podcasts are super fun.
- 1:04:23Caged in.
- 1:04:24Not only have I covered every single Nicholas Cage film,
- 1:04:26I've managed to interview tons of people who have worked on the films
- 1:04:30or work with Nicholas Cage down the line.
- 1:04:32So we've mentioned Pig quite a couple of times.
- 1:04:35Yeah. A few times in this.
- 1:04:37I did a series called The Pig Cast where I interviewed the writer,
- 1:04:41the director, the composers of the score and even the chef
- 1:04:47who Caged shadowed to look like a chef in the movie.
- 1:04:51And then, yeah, Getting Defoe You is a seasonal based look at Willem Defoe's career,
- 1:04:57which is tons of fun.
- 1:04:59I hosted it with Darrell Edge, who's also been on this podcast way back when.
- 1:05:03And yeah, that is really fun.
- 1:05:06I get to be the great I get to be the second man on that podcast.
- 1:05:09Darrell does the heavy lifting.
- 1:05:11So I just get to derail us and talk about Willem Defoe's cock
- 1:05:16any given opportunity. So I'm doing us.
- 1:05:19That's a that's a sweet way to describe it.
- 1:05:22It's a good gig.
- 1:05:23I understand. I feel that gig a lot.
- 1:05:26That is my my bread and butter. Just wiener talk.
- 1:05:30Yeah. The grenade man just throw that grenade in and watch everyone else go.
- 1:05:35Oh, I guess we're going to deal with this now.
- 1:05:37Now, why do we have to hear about Nick's past again?
- 1:05:40We've we've known each other.
- 1:05:41We've all known each other a while. We're used to it.
- 1:05:43Plus, you know, it'll get fixed in post.
- 1:05:47Yeah, I do like to add chores to Peter.
- 1:05:49It really makes his editing time like hell much longer.
- 1:05:53Thank you.
- 1:05:54Nobody's ever said that about me before, but thank you.
- 1:05:57Long and flat. God damn it, Peter.
- 1:06:00Like a platypus tail.
- 1:06:02No beaver tail.
- 1:06:03I don't know. They got tails.
- 1:06:06Yeah. So thank you to our sparkle buddies, Josh, Sean, Josie, Rico, Matt
- 1:06:10and Adam and our cage dancers, Ira, John Freeman and Lance.
- 1:06:14And that's all I got. Red Rock West fucking rules.
- 1:06:17Hey, Nick, where can you find us on the Internet?
- 1:06:19You can totally find us on Pornhub now.
- 1:06:22I've made an account.
- 1:06:23Just start searching for cage match colon around about way of meeting Nicolas Cage

- 1:06:31I think either of those will find you something.

- 1:06:53Yeah, bye bye. Bye bye.
- 1:07:07I don't know.
- 1:07:09Speaking of apologies, I'm a Clive Owen apology.
- 1:07:11I love Clive Owen.
- 1:07:13I got no beef.
- 1:07:13Shoot him up is so much. Oh, that's a hell of a fun movie.
- 1:07:17I love it when he starts pulling the trigger with a carrot. Yeah.
- 1:07:20Yeah, I like when he shoots him up. Yeah, it's good.
- 1:07:24I like the pot with the guns.
- 1:07:27Apology, a modest. What else do you want?
- 1:07:29Peter Stormare. I don't know.
- 1:07:31MC Ganey. Oh, yeah.
- 1:07:33Always more MC Ganey. Yeah.
- 1:07:38I'm just trying to think how many times do you go to flip someone off,
- 1:07:41realizing you have to like.
- 1:07:43Oh, the phantom. Yeah.
- 1:07:45I mean, it would gross me out more.
- 1:07:47Just see somebody give me three stumps.
- 1:07:48Mm hmm. Yeah. Stumps.
- 1:07:53Vicks. What was it? Thicken the stuff.
- 1:07:55What did you say earlier?
- 1:07:57Fuck, I don't know.
- 1:07:59It was gross. Whatever it was.
- 1:08:03Words just come out.
- 1:08:04I don't remember anything I say here. Fantastic.
- 1:08:07That's why we record it for posterity.
- 1:08:09Yeah, right. And people's exhibit.
- 1:08:12Hey, yeah.
