- 0:08It's the King Consultant podcast where we're turning up the heat
- 0:11on all things kink and dating, relationships and pop culture.
- 0:14So close the door, plug in your headphones, and let's get down
- 0:17to it. Hey everyone, welcome to this
- 0:24week's episode of the Kink Consultant podcast.
- 0:27I am doing a solo episode because I have been getting a
- 0:30ton of questions lately about how do I Dom?
- 0:33How do I switch? How do I play the dominant role?
- 0:36People seem to have a lot of anxiety around being a Dom and I
- 0:40wanted to address some of the concerns here.
- 0:43So think of this as like quick tips and tricks into how to be a
- 0:48Dom. As you all know in my stories on
- 0:50Instagram every Monday I host Monday anything and this is the
- 0:54question I get the most. My partner wants me to Dom and
- 0:58I'm willing to do it I just have no idea how.
- 1:01This one is super common because usually when I get this question
- 1:04the person asking me is used to playing the submissive role and
- 1:07their partner wants to be in the submissive role sometimes too.
- 1:10Number one thing right here is I need you to let go of trying to
- 1:14be the Dom your Dom is to you. That's not the type of Dom you
- 1:19have to be. I say this all the time as a
- 1:21switch. The sub I am is not the type of
- 1:24sub I would want if I were a Dom.
- 1:26My dominant energy, the type of dominant I play, is a caretaker
- 1:31role. I can be strict and
- 1:32authoritarian. What I need from my Dom is a
- 1:35little bit harsher. And that's the thing when people
- 1:38think, oh, I have to be a Dom, how do I get into my Dom energy?
- 1:42They're thinking, how do I act like I'm in charge and they have
- 1:45to do what I say, which is funny because that's the joke we all
- 1:48say not to do as Subs. We don't want our Doms acting
- 1:52like they're in charge and they know what's best and that's
- 1:55that. We want them to pay attention to
- 1:57us. So Dom energy isn't about being
- 2:00that in control, authoritarian type all the time, although it
- 2:04can be fun to play with that. Dom energy is about presence.
- 2:07That's like the beginning and end.
- 2:09You are there and you are creating a space.
- 2:12Think of it like a bubble of energy that you are pulling your
- 2:16submissive or the person who's going to play your submissive
- 2:19into. OK, Once you have that frame of
- 2:23reference, you realize this is a world you've created there in
- 2:27it, and you get to call the shots.
- 2:29Do you see how you're still in control?
- 2:31But the idea is they're in your bubble and you have to protect
- 2:34them in this bubble too. You don't want to make this a
- 2:36prison experience unless it is a prison role play.
- 2:39What you want to do is you want to decide that you are creating
- 2:44a space for you and you're submissive to enjoy a scene, a
- 2:49dynamic. And it might just be for a short
- 2:51time. It might be for a long time, but
- 2:53the point is, while you are the Dom, you do call the shots, but
- 2:57you are constantly looking at your sub, You are there with
- 3:00them, you are connected within the same bubble and your job is
- 3:04both to guide them, lead them and take care of them.
- 3:07So that requires a lot of presence and paying attention to
- 3:10who they are and what they want. But you do not have to do this
- 3:13blindly. What I mean by that is you get
- 3:16to ask questions. You don't just invite them into
- 3:18your bubble without saying, what are you looking for?
- 3:21What would make you feel good? Get to know them.
- 3:23I originally started teaching Dom energy because I, as a
- 3:29switch, have struggled to lean into both my Dom energy and my
- 3:34sub energy at times. So what I did for myself was I
- 3:37sat back, carved a path for myself to easily step into my
- 3:42Dom energy or my sub energy. And that's something that worked
- 3:45for me. And I realized a lot of people
- 3:48are struggling with this because they're not even thinking about
- 3:51it from a point of, oh, I can step into this energy.
- 3:55I can be in my dominant space and really owning it
- 4:00authentically. Same for the submissive space.
- 4:02So I decided I want to teach other people my method of how
- 4:06I've done this in the past and what's worked for me to give
- 4:09them options. Because I'm a firm believer that
- 4:12you just need to create the right neural pathways to be
- 4:15living a life you want to live. And that applies to Dom energy
- 4:18as well. I have a lot of clients come to
- 4:21me where 1 partner is submissive and they want their partner to
- 4:24be dominant. Their partner loves them very
- 4:26much, they want to try it, but they are lacking both the
- 4:29confidence, skill, knowledge, understanding and belief in
- 4:33themselves to be able to do it. That last part, belief in
- 4:37themselves is what made me realize this is a very common
- 4:40issue that has a semi easy solve.
- 4:43So without that belief in themselves, they weren't able to
- 4:47reflect inwards and think, OK, how do I want this to play out?
- 4:51They were so focused on living up to the other person's
- 4:54expectations. They didn't take time out to
- 4:56think, what do I want out of this?
- 4:58How do I want this to look? Which by the way is a large part
- 5:01of how I work with couples because oftentimes people are
- 5:04there to make their partner happy.
- 5:06And then I ask them, well, what do you want?
- 5:08And I'm telling you, there are usually 2 minutes of silence
- 5:11because they weren't prepared for that question.
- 5:13So I asked people in my Dom energy class to do the same
- 5:16thing. Tell me what you want from this
- 5:18and there can be a range answers.
- 5:20A really common one that I don't want to scare anyone off is I
- 5:23don't want to do this at all. You have to remember when things
- 5:25are unfamiliar, they're super scary and it seems like
- 5:28something you don't want to do. But until you try it and give it
- 5:31like the old college try, you're not sure whether it's truly
- 5:34something you don't want to do. If you have a boundary and being
- 5:37a dominant is that that's your boundary, I totally respect
- 5:40that. But if you're feeling like I
- 5:41don't want to do this, it seems like a lot of work, I don't
- 5:44think I'm going to enjoy it. I would encourage you to give it
- 5:46a try. So when I'd ask what it is it
- 5:49that you people would say, well, I just want to give them what
- 5:52they want. And while I really appreciate
- 5:54that answer because it comes from a place of love, I try and
- 5:57tease out, OK, these are the types of dominance there are.
- 6:00And I think if you've been following along, you may know,
- 6:02but maybe you don't know. There's the caretaker type of
- 6:04Dom. That might be the mommy daddy
- 6:06type of Dom. There's the strict master type
- 6:10of Dom. And they have a slave usually
- 6:13who does everything they say. Pause here because I want you to
- 6:15understand all of these rules still require you to care deeply
- 6:19about this and care about their needs as well.
- 6:21There's no version of this where you don't give a crap about your
- 6:24sub. There's the financial Dom, and I
- 6:26know a lot of people have stories about how they became a
- 6:29fin Dom and someone bought them a house, but it really requires
- 6:32expert knowledge and how to be a Dom.
- 6:34There's the pleasure Dom, someone who's very focused on
- 6:37using pleasure as a tool in their domination.
- 6:40And then there's the stereotypical, I guess we'd just
- 6:42call them Dom, and that might be the more authoritarian type who
- 6:46has a firm guiding hand as opposed to the partaker Dom who
- 6:50has sort of like a more gently guiding hand.
- 6:52I ask people which one of those sounds most like you or the
- 6:56version of you you'd like to be as a Dom.
- 6:59Once we start to look at that question, we can get to the
- 7:02authentic version of who that person is as a Dom.
- 7:05That was such a common question that I created a free guide for
- 7:08people called Speak Your Desires with Confidence.
- 7:11That's a free download you can get in the show notes today
- 7:14where I teach people how to talk to their partner about their
- 7:19kink and discover their communication style.
- 7:22It's a worksheet for both you and your partner to fill out
- 7:24independently and then come together to walk through.
- 7:27All the directions are inside to make it a really fun, enjoyable
- 7:32workbook for you and your partner as opposed to feeling
- 7:34like homework. So obviously I used to be a
- 7:37professional dominatrix. I have played dominant to people
- 7:41in really quick succession, like 5 or 6 sessions a night.
- 7:44I would meet someone sometimes for the first time, figure out
- 7:46what they wanted, and then Dom them in a session.
- 7:49That gave me a really great understanding of being able to
- 7:52ask people what they're looking for and being able to play the
- 7:56Dom they wanted me to be. Something that I didn't fully
- 7:59appreciate about that experience was how good I got at asking
- 8:02people what they were looking for and really listening,
- 8:05pulling the themes that they wanted from their session.
- 8:08And I think that's something I didn't give enough credit to
- 8:10that ability to do it because I trained on it.
- 8:13But it wasn't like a sit down lesson where I learned how to do
- 8:16it. I learned on the job.
- 8:17Literally. It wasn't until I got into a
- 8:2024/7 dynamic myself and watched my Dom do that for me that I
- 8:24remembered, wow, this is a skill.
- 8:27He is really good at it and I'm good at it too.
- 8:30But for him, he has been a full time Dom to people for longer
- 8:35periods of time, whereas I was doing it session by session or
- 8:39in short relationships. It gave me a new perspective on
- 8:42what it means to really communicate with your sub and
- 8:45take the time to understand them better.
- 8:47And I think that's something that's missing.
- 8:49So I originally had a very popular class.
- 8:52It's still one of my top selling courses, How to Tap Into Your
- 8:55Dom Energy. And while I stand by that class
- 8:59and I still think it's extremely valuable, I decided to launch
- 9:02Dom Energy 2.0 to include more of that authentic communication
- 9:07style and how to truly create a scene that is right for you and
- 9:11your partner. I go through actually
- 9:13communicating with your submissive and asking what
- 9:16they're looking for, learning to understand the themes and pull
- 9:19out the threads that make this their desire so you can play
- 9:22with those in your scene with them.
- 9:24By doing Dom Energy 2.0, I'm really going to help people step
- 9:28into their Dom energy by helping them learn how to command a room
- 9:32in an authentic and convincing way.
- 9:34I'm showing people how to quickly study their partner to
- 9:37create the scene they both desire.
- 9:40One thing I think almost every Dom, no matter how experienced,
- 9:44could change today that would give their sub a different
- 9:48experience. Show up with your real feelings.
- 9:51Do not pretend to be feeling stronger than you are, happier
- 9:55than you are, calmer than you are.
- 9:57Show up with your real feelings. If that is not the right energy
- 10:00to bring to a scene where you're doming, like if you're very
- 10:03anxious, I would say don't go into a scene, OK, but say you
- 10:07are tired. Say you are really happy.
- 10:11Do not change who you are just to do a scene as a Dom.
- 10:14So show up with presents. Be true to who you are and how
- 10:18you're authentically feeling. If you're tired, don't go into a
- 10:21very dramatic scene with maybe a lot of intricate work.
- 10:24Go at the pace you needed to be at and communicate that with
- 10:27your submissive. You don't have to say I'm tired
- 10:29today, so we're just going to do some ground road work.
- 10:31No, what you're going to say is this is going to be a slow
- 10:35session today. I'm going to be taking it easy
- 10:38and you're going to follow my lead.
- 10:40You're setting their expectations and being true to
- 10:43yourself. Because if you have to pretend
- 10:46to be happy, to pretend to be more energetic than you are,
- 10:49there's going to be an imbalance in how that scene plays out.
- 10:52You're pulling a lot of the weight.
- 10:53And although people think oh, doms are in charge and Subs just
- 10:56follow, I truly believe power exchange is a full on balancing
- 11:00act. And if either one of the people
- 11:03playing in this role are overextending themselves just to
- 11:07be in the scene, it's not going to be authentically fun or a
- 11:11fair exchange at the end of it. If anything I've talked about
- 11:14today resonates If you are a switch who wants to just become
- 11:18more empowered as a Dom. If you're a sub who wants to
- 11:20understand how to be a Dom, either to better yourself as a
- 11:25submissive or play with the Dom role at some point now or in the
- 11:28future, I cannot recommend tapping into your Dom energy 2.0
- 11:34enough. The link to sign up is in the
- 11:35show notes. It's going to happen on April
- 11:3723rd at 8:00 PM Eastern Time. A recording will be available
- 11:42afterwards. So I highly encourage you to
- 11:44sign up. I will be answering questions
- 11:46live. Check it out.
- 11:47I think this is going to be fitting for anyone who is an
- 11:50experienced Dom or someone who's just even curious about what it
- 11:54could possibly like to be a Dom or who just wants to understand
- 11:57better what their Dom has to work through and how their Dom
- 11:59operates to have more appreciation as a sub.
- 12:02So this course really is for everyone.
- 12:03Check it out. I know every time someone comes
- 12:06to one of my classes, even the most experienced Dom, most
- 12:09experienced sub, they tell me they have learned from it.
- 12:12So if you're even curious, check it out.
- 12:15Let me know if you have any questions in advance.
- 12:17Happy to answer those two. If you enjoyed this episode,
