Transcript
- 0:00What causes us to feel resentment?
- 0:03So I just went in there and I was questioning myself, what causes me to feel resentment?
- 0:09Maybe you might relate.
- 0:11When we feel out of control, or maybe we haven't actually said the thing or done the thing or followed through, so we'd let it kind of slip.
- 0:21And then it's gotten worse, so it's further and further away from what we want.
- 0:28and if I'm not saying it, then I'm harboring it.
- 0:30So therefore, this resentment tends to build, right?
- 0:35And it sounds like the conversation was happening
- 0:38and you're feeling that maybe it's not new.
- 0:42Maybe it was already there building up.
- 0:43So suddenly it's like you're feeling it even more,
- 0:46the resentment.
- 0:50Over the years, this is just me personally
- 0:53and I'm not saying you need to follow what I'm saying or do,
- 0:56I've you know I've learned and learning and learns this so I practice it if I'm feeling
- 1:03a big emotion like you know emotional reaction you know coming as in like I'm feeling the emotion
- 1:08and I want to react whether it's with words obviously I don't believe in violence so I'm
- 1:15not you know going to get violent but like unless I'm protecting someone I love that's different
- 1:23you know so normally it's like in words right like I say action but normally the action still
- 1:28comes out in words I've learned to not respond when I'm feeling a big emotion
- 1:38because a lot of times like that emotion
- 1:43needs some space needs some time and space for me to feel it fully so while I'm in the
- 1:50is not a good time for me to give a response.
- 1:55Because one, I can't think straight
- 1:57because I'm feeling emotions, you know,
- 1:59resentment or anger, whatever I'm feeling.
- 2:03So I practice generally not speaking in that time
- 2:11and listening, you know,
- 2:14and letting the other person or people
- 2:18express what they need to express.
- 2:22really listen, like do my very best even though I'm feeling stuff
- 2:26to really listen and not to
- 2:30take on everything but to hear them
- 2:34and then consider like what am I going to do with the information
- 2:37that they're sharing and again like
- 2:41because I'm going through emotion, right, you know, that moment
- 2:45that time might not have the clarity of thought or thinking at that
- 2:51maybe I'd step away after that.
- 2:55And go and sit with what is it.
- 2:59Sit with the emotions, give it space and let it move through,
- 3:03not push it down, not swallow it or numb it,
- 3:09but actually to feel it.
- 3:11And then to sit with the perspective,
- 3:14like to zoom out and to have some perspective on the thing.
- 3:17And how much truth is there in what they're saying?
- 3:21am I not seeing?
- 3:23You know, because the tendency of mine
- 3:25is to always point the finger first
- 3:26and say like, yeah, that's their fault.
- 3:28You know, it's not me, it's them.
- 3:30So to go, and if I turn the tables around,
- 3:33like if I put myself in their shoes,
- 3:36what am I not seeing about this?
- 3:38What am I missing?
- 3:45And, you know, therefore, from that perspective,
- 3:48is there anything I need to change?
- 3:50Is there anything I need to take responsibility for?
- 3:53Is there anything I need to apologize for?
- 3:55Is there anything I need to make right, like go and fix?
- 3:59Because maybe unknowingly, most of the time, that's what happens with us.
- 4:03We're not intentionally trying to harm or hurt or destroy something.
- 4:09But because you are in your pattern, we tend to kind of act in certain ways
- 4:14because we're not aware of it.
- 4:16So when there is some room for the emotion to be processed,
- 4:20And then there's some therefore, because of that, there's space for clarity of mind and thinking.
- 4:27Therefore, then I can zoom out and get some perspective on it.
- 4:31Not just listen to other people's perspective, which can be useful.
- 4:35But even if I listen to perspective, I'm always coming back to like, what's my thoughts on this?
- 4:41What's my take on this?
- 4:42What's my values?
- 4:43What's my decision on this?
- 4:46Because I own my decision.
- 4:49you know and it doesn't mean oh I always make the right decision I've made
- 4:52the wrong decisions many times but then if I do then going back and
- 4:56making it right like fixing it owning you know
- 5:00taking responsibility apologizing correcting behavior and fixing it not
- 5:04just saying sorry and then going back to the behavior
- 5:09so that's just me but like sometimes
- 5:13there is my part and then there is their part
- 5:17and there might be certain things that
- 5:19I don't know the situation that you're talking about here
- 5:22so I'm just trying to give different scenarios
- 5:25you know if I'm resentful
- 5:26is it because I haven't said certain things
- 5:28like I haven't expressed
- 5:32certain views, perspective
- 5:35you know and
- 5:37can I bring that into a conversation
- 5:39and sit and have a conversation with them
- 5:41there are times when
- 5:43I choose not to have those conversations
- 5:45because maybe I just don't feel like there is any room, right?
- 5:50Like, or they would want to have that conversation at all.
- 5:53Or I try to, and then it's like, there's no space for it.
- 5:56It's like, okay, so that's fine.
- 5:58You know, they can choose not to.
- 6:00But if there's room for it and they're willing to hear my sides,
- 6:03you know, obviously, generally, I'll start with wanting to hear their side first
- 6:06and then offer my part and see if we can actually,
- 6:10most of the time, it's because I have my map of the world.
- 6:15of the world and we think we all see things the same but we don't.
- 6:21You see your world the way you see it.
- 6:24I see the world the way I see it. But we all
- 6:27think everyone sees it the same way. So therefore we have all of this conflict
- 6:32in life. And it's kind of
- 6:35unnecessary and a lot of times sad because
- 6:39sometimes you're the third person and you can see these two different perspectives and they're going
- 6:46and it's sad because like it's destroying a relationship
- 6:49and it's just because two people have two different perspectives
- 6:51and if they would just talk it would be resolved
- 6:54so you know a lot of times it could be that
- 6:56that just kind of heals it, that resolves it
- 7:05resentment normally is like just a build up
- 7:07because we haven't said the thing
- 7:11you know and the best time to say it
- 7:12so this is like another, I've said it in a very long way
- 7:15a different way. You know, the best time to express the thing we want to express is not when
- 7:22we're emotional, whether it's resentment or any other emotion. The best time is when you feel
- 7:28clear and you can express clearly without being emotive about the thing that you're expressing.
- 7:35Because you take information and you put emotion to it, it comes out in a different way.
- 7:41if you, I'm not saying remove the emotion and be cold,
- 7:44but remove the reactivity from the emotion.
- 7:49So therefore you can respond in a way, you can speak,
- 7:52that can be a conversation.
- 7:54And a conversation is two ways.
- 7:55You express, you hear, you listen,
- 7:58you respond to the thing,
- 8:00they get to respond to the thing,
- 8:01and there's a listening and a hearing.
- 8:03Doesn't mean you have to agree with everything.
- 8:05You can even agree like, okay, I don't agree with that,
- 8:07and you can say, I don't agree with that.
- 8:10you know, we don't agree with those parts.
- 8:11That's, you know,
- 8:12and we can have differing opinions
- 8:15and perspectives.
- 8:17And that's kind of,
- 8:19you know, it's like ambassadors,
- 8:21like being an ambassador, right?
- 8:22Like negotiation.
- 8:26And most of it, it comes down to that.
- 8:30So I have a map of the world
- 8:32and I see my world this way.
- 8:33You have a map of the world,
- 8:34you see your world that way.
- 8:35We both assume that we have the same map,
- 8:39but we don't.
- 8:41our maps are different, every single one of us.
- 8:45And that's a good thing.
- 8:48The universe made us unique.
- 8:50And without differences of views, opinions, experiences,
- 8:55knowledge, when we bring it together and when it can work together,
- 8:58we become stronger.
- 8:59But when we take our differences of views, experience, opinions, knowledge,
- 9:03and we fight each other, then we diminish each other even equally,
- 9:08as we would rise up together.
- 9:12So having the conversation is part of the growth.
- 9:17As we grow and we expand, there is capacity for us to hold
- 9:22what can seem like a difficult conversation before you have it,
- 9:25but then after you have it, you're glad that you had the so-called difficult conversation
- 9:29because those are the healing conversations if there is room for it.
- 9:35and it comes from you making room for it
- 9:39and then seeing if they would make room for it
- 9:41for the conversation,
- 9:43for the things that we're too scared to say,
- 9:46for it to be said,
- 9:47and for listening to happen,
- 9:49for it to be heard,
- 9:51for us to feel what we need to feel,
- 9:53express anything else,
- 9:56and then learn what we need to learn
- 9:58and move forward from there.
- 10:00So let me read the question again.
- 10:02in conversation I think
- 10:03and practice like breathing and listening
- 10:05and acknowledging the feelings I'm feeling
- 10:08but really being open and listening
- 10:10and then it's the afterwards
- 10:13that
- 10:15you know
- 10:16you all know this because you do the meditations
- 10:18and in our meditations we do healings
- 10:20whether you're doing the meditation or not
- 10:22you can close your eyes and a lot of times I would just see
- 10:24the person you know in a way can we do like Ho'oponopono
- 10:27see the person in front of me
- 10:28or people or person
- 10:31and saying like, you know,
- 10:33whether I think it's there right, I'm wrong,
- 10:35whatever it is, I'm right, they're wrong.
- 10:37I'll ask for forgiveness
- 10:40and, you know, see here, feel them giving me the forgiveness,
- 10:44right, soul to soul.
- 10:46And then I'll visualize them asking me for forgiveness
- 10:49and I'm giving it and them receiving it.
- 10:52So therefore a healing is happening.
- 10:53And then we forgive.
- 10:55Give.
- 10:56That means we finish.
- 10:59We give it up.
- 10:59We give up the fight
- 11:03because we're both hanging on to a certain view
- 11:06which doesn't match.
- 11:08So resentment is like, okay,
- 11:10when you sit in meditation,
- 11:12it's a really perfect time to do the healing.
- 11:14What's the healing?
- 11:15To feel the feeling.
- 11:17To give it the room that is needed.
- 11:20To do the processing.
- 11:22And for sometimes, you know,
- 11:24you come out of meditation,
- 11:25to journal, okay, do that. Get it out of your head. I had the conversation today and the more
- 11:31things she was saying were getting more annoying, but I didn't feel it was okay to respond to all
- 11:39of what she was saying. Yeah, I think me personally generally, like I tend not to just, you know,
- 11:45if I need time to go and sit with it and come back later, choosing my response. And the other
- 11:52things why not do that it's better to just do that then say the thing and then like well i didn't mean
- 11:59that why did i say that it's because i was emotional then if i if i feel more resentful
- 12:06as someone's talking to me in that moment i'm feeling big emotions but when i leave i'm going
- 12:12to sit with the difficult question of how much of that is true what that person was saying if i get
- 12:19really brutally honest with myself how much of that is true you know how much
- 12:25of that what part of that is for me to take accountability for and as difficult
- 12:33as it would be then taking the ownership and then going there having the
- 12:39conversation from a place of taking the accountability for my part not this and
- 12:47that's also part of the healing.
