Transparency and Trust - Episode 12 · Profit and Principle

• 0:00
SPEAKER_00: Think about the business relationships in your life that you would describe as genuinely trustworthy.
• 0:09
SPEAKER_00: The vendor you don't have to double check.
• 0:11
SPEAKER_00: The partner whose word is as good as a contract.
• 0:16
SPEAKER_00: The client who refers you without being asked because they are completely confident in what you will deliver.
• 0:23
SPEAKER_00: Now think about what it took to build those relationships.
• 0:27
  SPEAKER_00: It wasn't one conversation.
• 0:29
  SPEAKER_00: It wasn't a well-worded proposal or a strong first impression.
• 0:34
SPEAKER_00: It was a pattern, a consistent record of behavior over time that answered again and again the question every business relationship is quietly asking.
• 0:45
SPEAKER_00: Can I count on this person to tell me the truth?
• 0:49
SPEAKER_00: Trust is the most valuable asset in any business, and it is built almost entirely through one thing: transparency.
• 0:59
SPEAKER_00: Not openness for its own sake, not radical honesty that ignores wisdom or timing, but the consistent practice of letting people see what they need to see to make good decisions in a relationship with you.
• 1:14
SPEAKER_00: And here's what makes it strategically significant.
• 1:18
SPEAKER_00: It's one of the only competitive advantages your competitors genuinely cannot replicate.
• 1:25
SPEAKER_00: They can match your price, they can improve their product, they can poach your talent, but they cannot manufacture a reputation for transparent dealing that you've spent years building.
• 1:38
  SPEAKER_00: Hi, I'm Dr.
• 1:39
SPEAKER_00: Daryl Stein, and this is Profit and Principle.
• 1:43
SPEAKER_00: Today we're looking at what Scripture says about transparency and the trust it builds.
• 1:50
SPEAKER_00: And I want to show you one passage in particular from 2 Corinthians that demonstrates a level of proactive financial transparency that would put most modern businesses to shame.
• 2:02
SPEAKER_00: Here's what you'll walk away with: a framework for understanding trust is a strategic asset, not just a moral value, and two specific moves to increase the transparency quotient in your most important business relationships this week.
• 2:19
SPEAKER_00: So why does this matter in business?
• 2:22
SPEAKER_00: Let me be direct about something that doesn't get said enough in business conversations.
• 2:28
SPEAKER_00: Most leaders dramatically underestimate how much opacity is costing them.
• 2:34
  SPEAKER_00: Not dishonesty, but opacity.
• 2:37
SPEAKER_00: Keeping information closer than necessary, giving answers that are technically accurate, but strategically incomplete.
• 2:47
SPEAKER_00: Operating in a way that leaves people in your orbit with less information than they need to fully trust what you're telling them.
• 2:54
SPEAKER_00: It's not lying, it's just not being as forthcoming as you could be.
• 2:59
SPEAKER_00: And in most business cultures, that's not only accepted, it's considered sophisticated, competitive, and smart.
• 3:08
SPEAKER_00: But here's what it actually produces: a low-grade trust deficit that pervades every relationship you have.
• 3:17
SPEAKER_00: People who work with you learn over time that they need to read between the lines, that there's probably more to the story, that they should factor in some uncertainty when they act on what you've told them.
• 3:30
SPEAKER_00: They're not accusing you of dishonesty, they just know from experience that the picture they're getting isn't the whole picture, and they adjust accordingly.
• 3:41
SPEAKER_00: That adjustment shows up in concrete ways.
• 3:44
SPEAKER_00: Clients who build in margin for your optimistic estimates, employees who don't fully commit because they're waiting for the real plan to emerge.
• 3:54
SPEAKER_00: Partners who hedge in negotiations because they've learned that your first position is never your final one.
• 4:01
SPEAKER_00: Investors who discount your projections because they don't believe you're giving them the unfiltered view.
• 4:07
SPEAKER_00: None of those people are being unreasonable.
• 4:10
SPEAKER_00: They're responding rationally to the information environment you've created.
• 4:15
  SPEAKER_00: Now let's flip this.
• 4:17
SPEAKER_00: The leader who has built a genuine reputation for transparency, who is known for disclosing problems early, communicating decisions with full context, sharing the reasoning behind choices even when it's uncomfortable, that leader gets something different.
• 4:33
SPEAKER_00: They get relationships where people lean in rather than hedge, where employees execute with conviction rather than wait for the other shoe to drop.
• 4:44
SPEAKER_00: Where clients give the benefit of the doubt in difficult moments because the relationship has a track record of straight dealing.
• 4:52
  SPEAKER_00: That's not a soft benefit.
• 4:54
SPEAKER_00: It translates directly into speed, efficiency, lower transaction costs, and the kind of referral network that no marketing budget can buy.
• 5:05
SPEAKER_00: Let's take a look at what Scripture says.
• 5:07
SPEAKER_00: And we're going to begin in Proverbs chapter 12, verse 22.
• 5:12
SPEAKER_00: And it says this lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who act faithfully are his delight.
• 5:21
SPEAKER_00: You see the word abomination.
• 5:23
SPEAKER_00: And in this series that we're currently in, this is going to be the second time that we see this.
• 5:30
SPEAKER_00: Once it was applied to the dishonest scale in Proverbs chapter 11, verse 1.
• 5:36
SPEAKER_00: And now, here, applied to lying lips.
• 5:39
SPEAKER_00: This is not accidental repetition.
• 5:42
SPEAKER_00: The Proverbs are making a consistent point.
• 5:45
SPEAKER_00: God's response to dishonesty in human relationships is not mild disapproval.
• 5:51
SPEAKER_00: It's the same category of response he has to idolatry.
• 5:56
SPEAKER_00: Lying is treated as a fundamental disorder, a distortion of the way God designed human community to function.
• 6:05
SPEAKER_00: The contrast is equally important.
• 6:07
SPEAKER_00: It mentions those who act faithfully.
• 6:10
SPEAKER_00: Literally, this means those who do faithfulness, who produced trustworthiness through action.
• 6:17
SPEAKER_00: Note that faithfulness here is not a feeling or an intention, it's an activity.
• 6:23
SPEAKER_00: It's something you do consistently over time in ways that are observable.
• 6:29
SPEAKER_00: You don't have a reputation for trustworthiness because you think of yourself as trustworthy.
• 6:34
SPEAKER_00: You have it because people have watched you act faithfully in situation after situation and have drawn a conclusion.
• 6:41
SPEAKER_00: For the business leader, this is both a warning and an invitation.
• 6:46
  SPEAKER_00: The warning is clear.
• 6:54
SPEAKER_00: The invitation is equally clear.
• 6:57
SPEAKER_00: Faithfulness, expressed in consistent and transparent action, is something that brings God pleasure, and it builds something in the human community around you that is genuinely irreplaceable.
• 7:11
  SPEAKER_00: Next, let's take a look at 2 Corinthians 8, verse 21.
• 7:15
SPEAKER_00: And Paul writes this for we aim at what is honorable not only in the Lord's sight, but also in the sight of man.
• 7:24
SPEAKER_00: This is the passage I want to spend the most time on because it comes from a context that is remarkably practical and specifically financial.
• 7:32
  SPEAKER_00: So here's the background.
• 7:34
SPEAKER_00: Paul is overseeing a major fundraising effort, a collection from Gentile churches to support the impoverished church in Jerusalem.
• 7:43
SPEAKER_00: This is a significant operation involving real money flowing across multiple communities and regions.
• 7:50
SPEAKER_00: And Paul is acutely aware that money moving through any organization, even a church, creates the potential for accusation, suspicion, and scandal.
• 8:00
SPEAKER_00: So he does something deliberate and strategic.
• 8:04
SPEAKER_00: He arranges for the collection to be handled not just by himself, but by a team, a brother who is famous among all the churches for his preaching, appointed by the churches themselves, not by Paul.
• 8:18
SPEAKER_00: And then in verse 20, he explains why.
• 8:21
SPEAKER_00: We take this course so that no one should blame us about this generous gift that is being administered by us.
• 8:28
SPEAKER_00: And then in verse 21, we aim at what is honorable, not only in the Lord's sight, but also in the sight of man.
• 8:38
SPEAKER_00: Paul is doing something here that goes beyond personal integrity.
• 8:42
SPEAKER_00: He is proactively structuring his financial operations to be transparent and above reproach.
• 8:48
SPEAKER_00: Not because he's afraid of being caught doing something wrong, but because he understands that the perception of trustworthiness is as important as the reality of it.
• 9:00
SPEAKER_00: He's building in accountability structures, external oversight, and visibility, not reluctantly as a compliance requirement, but deliberately as a reputation strategy.
• 9:13
SPEAKER_00: The Greek word translated aim here means to think ahead or to plan for.
• 9:19
SPEAKER_00: Paul is planning in advance for how his financial dealings will appear to others.
• 9:25
SPEAKER_00: He's building transparent structures before anyone asks for them.
• 9:30
SPEAKER_00: This is one of the most practically sophisticated passages in the New Testament for the business leader who cares about financial integrity.
• 9:38
SPEAKER_00: The lesson isn't just be honest, it's build structures that make your honesty visible and verifiable.
• 9:47
SPEAKER_00: Now finally, let's turn our attention to Luke chapter 8, verse 17.
• 9:52
SPEAKER_00: And Luke writes this for nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest, nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to light.
• 10:03
SPEAKER_00: Jesus is speaking here in the context of teaching his disciples about how they receive and handle the Word of God.
• 10:10
SPEAKER_00: But the principle he articulates applies with full force to business life.
• 10:16
SPEAKER_00: Hidden things come to light, secret things become known.
• 10:30
SPEAKER_00: And there the application was to concealed wrongdoing.
• 10:35
SPEAKER_00: Here the application is the converse.
• 10:38
SPEAKER_00: If hidden things come to light, then the leader who has nothing to hide has a fundamentally different posture before that inevitability than the leader who does.
• 10:48
SPEAKER_00: Transparency is not just a moral practice, it's a strategic alignment with the direction history moves.
• 10:57
SPEAKER_00: The things that are hidden eventually surface.
• 11:00
SPEAKER_00: The organizations and leaders who build their operations on what can be seen, verified, and confirmed are positioned well for that moment.
• 11:09
SPEAKER_00: The ones who depend on what stays hidden are not.
• 11:13
SPEAKER_00: The business leader who operates transparently, who discloses early, communicates fully, invites scrutiny is not being naive.
• 11:23
  SPEAKER_00: They're being wise.
• 11:25
SPEAKER_00: They're building something that will look the same in the light as it does in private.
• 11:29
SPEAKER_00: And that, over time, is the most durable competitive position there is.
• 11:36
SPEAKER_00: Let me give you a picture of what proactive transparency looks like in practice and what it builds.
• 11:42
SPEAKER_00: A financial services firm I'm aware of, and I'll call the founder Patricia, that firm made a decision early in the company's history that felt unnecessary at the time.
• 11:54
SPEAKER_00: Every quarter, Patricia sent her key clients a report that included not just performance numbers, but the reasoning behind major allocation decisions, including the ones that hadn't worked out the way she'd expected.
• 12:09
SPEAKER_00: Not just here are your returns, but here's what we thought, here's what happened, here's what we learned, and here's how that's changing our approach.
• 12:20
SPEAKER_00: This was uncomfortable the first time she sent it.
• 12:23
SPEAKER_00: It meant owning decisions that had underperformed.
• 12:26
SPEAKER_00: It meant explaining her thinking in ways that invited second guessing.
• 12:31
SPEAKER_00: Several colleagues told her she was creating unnecessary liability.
• 12:36
SPEAKER_00: What it actually created was the most loyal client base in her region.
• 12:41
SPEAKER_00: Not because her returns were always the best, but because her clients trusted what she had told them was the complete picture.
• 12:49
SPEAKER_00: When a difficult quarter came, and let's face it, they always do, her clients didn't panic and pull funds because they already knew the reasoning.
• 12:57
SPEAKER_00: They had already been part of the process.
• 13:00
SPEAKER_00: They had already understood that Patricia's communication in hard times was as straight as it was in good times.
• 13:08
SPEAKER_00: She didn't lose a single major client in a seven-year period that included two significant market downturns.
• 13:16
SPEAKER_00: She gained referrals consistently from clients who specifically told their colleagues, she tells you everything, not just what you want to hear.
• 13:24
SPEAKER_00: That is 2 Corinthians 8.21 with the business card.
• 13:29
SPEAKER_00: Honorable in the Lord's sight and in the sight of man, by design, not by accident.
• 13:37
SPEAKER_00: So what can we do?
• 13:38
SPEAKER_00: Well, I have two things.
• 13:40
SPEAKER_00: One is internal and one is external.
• 13:43
SPEAKER_00: So first, identify one relationship where you're operating with more opacity than necessary and close the gap.
• 13:52
SPEAKER_00: This week, pick one relationship, a key employee, a business partner, a significant client, and ask yourself honestly, is this person operating with full information about the things that affect them?
• 14:06
SPEAKER_00: Not confidential information they don't need, not strategic data that would be competitively sensitive, but the information that they would want to have if they knew it existed.
• 14:18
SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's a challenge you're facing that affects your timeline.
• 14:22
SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's a decision you've already made that they're going to feel downstream.
• 14:27
SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's context about a situation they're navigating that would change how they're navigating it.
• 14:33
SPEAKER_00: And here's the question: Am I keeping this from them because they genuinely don't need it?
• 14:38
SPEAKER_00: Or because sharing it would be uncomfortable for me?
• 14:42
SPEAKER_00: If it's the latter, that's opacity in service of your comfort, not their interest.
• 14:48
SPEAKER_00: And that's a transparency gap worth closing this week.
• 14:52
  SPEAKER_00: Here's the second step.
• 14:54
SPEAKER_00: Build one accountability structure that makes your financial or operational decisions verifiable.
• 15:01
SPEAKER_00: Paul didn't just intend to handle the collection honestly.
• 15:06
SPEAKER_00: He built a structure that made honesty visible.
• 15:10
SPEAKER_00: This week, identify one area of your business where your financial or operational decisions are currently made in a way that depends entirely on your own integrity with no external verification.
• 15:23
SPEAKER_00: It might be your expense reporting.
• 15:25
SPEAKER_00: It might be how project costs are tracked and communicated to clients.
• 15:30
SPEAKER_00: It might be partner distributions.
• 15:32
SPEAKER_00: It might be how your team's time is logged.
• 15:35
SPEAKER_00: Pick one of those areas and introduce a simple accountability mechanism, a second set of eyes, a reporting format that shows your work, or a review process that makes your reasoning visible.
• 15:48
SPEAKER_00: Not because you're doing anything wrong, but because the leader who proactively builds structures that invite scrutiny is the one Paul describes in 2 Corinthians 8, taking forethought for what is honorable, not just before God, but before everyone watching.
• 16:07
SPEAKER_00: There's something worth saying plainly before we close.
• 16:11
  SPEAKER_00: Transparency takes courage.
• 16:14
SPEAKER_00: Not the dramatic courage of a public stand, the quieter, more persistent courage of consistently giving people more information than you have to, of sharing the reasoning behind hard decisions when you could just announce them.
• 16:29
SPEAKER_00: Of owning the underperformance clearly instead of burying it in favorable comparisons.
• 16:36
SPEAKER_00: That kind of transparency is uncomfortable every single time, and it requires choosing, again and again, the discomfort of openness over the ease of keeping things close.
• 16:49
SPEAKER_00: But here's what you'll build on the other side of that discomfort.
• 16:54
SPEAKER_00: Relationships that can withstand the hard seasons.
• 16:57
SPEAKER_00: Clients who don't leave when things get difficult because they've been inside the process.
• 17:03
SPEAKER_00: Employees who execute with full commitment because they know the full picture.
• 17:08
SPEAKER_00: And partners who extend trust when things were uncertain because you've earned it when things were clear.
• 17:15
SPEAKER_00: The currency of business is trust.
• 17:18
SPEAKER_00: Transparency is how you mint it.
• 17:21
SPEAKER_00: And God, who is Himself the God of light in whom there is no darkness at all, takes delight in the leader who operates the same way.
• 17:31
SPEAKER_00: Let me pray for you.
• 17:33
SPEAKER_00: Father, I pray for every leader listening right now who is trying to build something real, something that will last longer than a good quarter, that will survive a hard season, that will be standing when things get complicated.
• 17:48
SPEAKER_00: Give them the courage to be transparent when opacity would be easier.
• 17:52
SPEAKER_00: Give them the wisdom to build structures that make their integrity visible, not just real.
• 17:58
SPEAKER_00: And help them to trust that the relationships built on full, honest dealings are the ones worth having, that the clients, partners, and employees who stay through full disclosure are the ones who will be with them for the long run.
• 18:14
SPEAKER_00: Let them be leaders in whose dealings there is nothing hidden that will embarrass them when it comes to light.
• 18:21
  SPEAKER_00: In Jesus' name, amen.
