- 0:00Hey, hey, Yinning at Life Gang. It's Kimberly Roberts, your host
- 0:03here, and I'm so excited to deliver little bits of insight
- 0:11on living your best, most extraordinary life with, of
- 0:16course, yin yoga, traditional Chinese medicine, reflexology,
- 0:21and even mindset acts. So thank you so much for
- 0:27pressing play on today's episode.
- 0:30Let's do this. Well, hello there, and welcome
- 0:34to another episode of Beginning at Life podcast.
- 0:38I'm so stoked that you're here because today I want to talk
- 0:43about something actually one of my favourite topics to talk
- 0:47about. Sleep.
- 0:52Yeah, sleep. It's a big one because I'll tell
- 0:56you, nothing works in your life if you don't sleep.
- 1:02But I want to tie this into why does sleep get trickier after
- 1:0740? And actually the things that can
- 1:11help you to get a better night's sleep.
- 1:15Now I don't know about you, but once I hit my 40s my
- 1:19relationship with sleep totally changed.
- 1:23You know? Like what it used to be was so
- 1:27easy, delicious, 8 hours. I would literally like hit my
- 1:34head on the pillow and I'd be out like a light in a hot 2nd
- 1:38right? But then it started to get
- 1:43unpredictable. Some nights I'd fall asleep
- 1:47instantly and sleep all night long and then other nights my
- 1:55mind would do that 2:00 AM thing.
- 1:57We all know that, right? All of a sudden, and especially
- 2:01if you're a woman and you're in perimenopause or menopause and
- 2:05hormones start to fluctuate in the body, that 2:00 AM rude wake
- 2:10up call is coming from your liver, right?
- 2:14And so of course, at 2:00 AM, what are you doing?
- 2:18You're deciding that that's the perfect time to replay every
- 2:21single conversation you have had since God knows when.
- 2:25Can you relate? Sound familiar to you?
- 2:29So what I want to break down today is why does our sleep
- 2:33change after 40? What's actually going on in our
- 2:36body and our nervous system, which is so important, and how
- 2:40Yin yoga, meditation, and breath work before bed can completely
- 2:45transform your sleep hygiene and honestly your entire next day
- 2:50energy. Because I will tell you, when I
- 2:52was in my 20s, I could pull off the three hours of sleep a night
- 2:58and do that consecutively and have all the energy to burn the
- 3:02next day. Now, if I literally get one
- 3:06night of crap sleep, my entire next day, I got no energy, I got
- 3:11nothing in the tank, right? So let's talk about what's
- 3:15really going on here. So first, our hormones, they
- 3:20start to shift in our 40s. Even if you're not in full
- 3:25menopause yet, perimenopause can start to bring little dips and
- 3:30spikes and estrogen and progesterone levels, and those
- 3:35directly affect the quality of your sleep.
- 3:38Now, if you're not aware, progesterone especially is known
- 3:42as the calming hormone. When it drops, your body can
- 3:46have a harder time relaxing at night.
- 3:49And then you add to that, oh yay, stress screen time.
- 3:56Who's scrolling and scrolling at night or sitting and binging
- 3:59Netflix, Right? Just the screen time during the
- 4:04day alone is already overloading.
- 4:08We have the work thoughts, we've got kids, we've got life.
- 4:14And with all of that going on, you got a recipe for that wired
- 4:19but tired feeling. Can you relate to that?
- 4:23Do you know what I mean? Like you're literally exhausted,
- 4:26but then you go to bed and you're like, I can't sleep.
- 4:28Like I'm wired, right? Not a good, not a good
- 4:32combination at all. But here's the beautiful part.
- 4:36Your body wants to rest. It's actually designed for deep
- 4:40healing sleep. Because you see, the only time
- 4:43that we heal is either in deep sleep or when we shift our
- 4:49nervous system into a parasympathetic state.
- 4:54And your body needs the right conditions to find rhythm.
- 4:59Again, this is where yin yoga, breath work and meditation come
- 5:03in. And I will tell you, they have
- 5:05been literally game changing. Even a 10 or 15 minute practice
- 5:09before bed has like completely changed my sleep hygiene.
- 5:16So let's talk about the first one.
- 5:18Yin yoga. It's kind of like your body's
- 5:20lullaby, right? It's honestly one of the most
- 5:24underrated tools for sleep. But think about it Yin yoga.
- 5:29It's slow. It's still it works directly
- 5:35with the fascia and connective tissue that holds much of the
- 5:38tension and emotional residue from your day.
- 5:43And when you hold these gentle yin poses for a few minutes,
- 5:46your muscles soften, your breath deepens, connective tissue
- 5:51fascia layers start to relax, and your nervous system starts
- 5:55to shift from flight or fright to rest and repair or rest and
- 5:59digest your parasympathetic state.
- 6:04It's like you're literally telling your body, oh, hey
- 6:07there, it's safe to slow down now.
- 6:10Let's chill. But here's the thing that most
- 6:14people tend to forget about. The magic happens when you do it
- 6:19consistently. So sometimes people say, well,
- 6:22you know, I've got an hour once a week.
- 6:25That's actually not beneficial. It's consistent repetition.
- 6:31So even 10 or 15 minutes before bed every single night can start
- 6:36to retrain your nervous system to wind down naturally.
- 6:40Like honestly, most of us, let's be truthful, are either
- 6:46scrolling at night or binging Netflix.
- 6:49You can chop 15 minutes off of that and devote it to your yen
- 6:53practice. Yes, you can.
- 6:55I know you can. It just takes a little bit of
- 6:57discipline and a little bit of retraining, but you can do it.
- 7:01Now the next one I want to talk about is breath work and
- 7:04meditation. How they are really powerful
- 7:07tools to retrain your nervous system when you add breath work
- 7:14and meditation into the mix. OMG.
- 7:20When you pair slow, mindful breathing with a short guided
- 7:24meditation, you are essentially clearing the mental clutter and
- 7:30chatter of the day. You know, it's kind of like
- 7:33washing your mind before you wash your face, right?
- 7:36Or brushing your your mind before you brush your teeth.
- 7:40So tonight I'm going to challenge you to try something.
- 7:45I want you to lie down, close your eyes, and take slow, deep
- 7:49breaths. You're going to inhale for a
- 7:53count of four, and you're going to exhale for a count of 6.
- 7:57Now you can inhale through the nose and I encourage you to
- 8:00exhale through the mouth, maybe even make like a little bit of a
- 8:04sigh, right? Let each breath lengthen just a
- 8:17little bit more and I will tell you after about 5 minutes,
- 8:23you'll start to feel that drop, that gentle slide into
- 8:27stillness, that gentle shift out of the sympathetic and into the
- 8:34parasympathetic. And that's really what's
- 8:36happening. It's your parasympathetic
- 8:38nervous system kicking in. It's like your body is going,
- 8:42thank you. Like, I really needed this and I
- 8:46appreciate this. So creating a bedtime ritual,
- 8:53this is really, really important.
- 8:55OK, I cannot emphasize that enough.
- 8:57There are really small little things that you can do.
- 9:01This doesn't have to be fancy, but I'll tell you if you're over
- 9:0540 and you're struggling with sleep or even if you're just not
- 9:09waking up feeling rested. Like have you ever had that?
- 9:12Like you slept for 8 hours but you get up and you're like, I
- 9:15don't even feel like I slept. Well then that's where you
- 9:19really need a nighttime ritual because even if you're waking up
- 9:24and you're not feeling rested after 8 hours, you're not
- 9:28getting deep sleep. So here are just a few really
- 9:34simple things that you can do at night to help you.
- 9:38Have a cup of herbal tea. Chamomile is probably one of the
- 9:41best, or even lavender, or you can mix the two together.
- 9:45Try to stay away with like anything stimulating like
- 9:48peppermint. Try 10 to 15 minutes of yen
- 9:53yoga. Try maybe 5-10 minutes of slow
- 9:59breathing, a short guided meditation or calming playlist.
- 10:06Now I also encourage you as the sun goes down, start to dim the
- 10:12lights in your house because I will tell you, bright lights at
- 10:16night don't work well for stimulating melatonin, right?
- 10:21They keep your pineal gland wide awake.
- 10:25So if your house is lit up like a Christmas tree, turn that
- 10:28stuff down because I'll tell you a nice, you know, candlelit
- 10:34environment or even just dimming your lights is a game changer.
- 10:40If you're not someone who sleeps with an eye mask, I highly
- 10:44recommend that making sure that your bedroom is as dark as
- 10:48possible. If you can't get it super dark.
- 10:51And what I mean by super dark is if you put your hand up in front
- 10:56of you, you shouldn't be able to see it.
- 10:58It should be that dark. So if it's not one simple thing,
- 11:03use the eye mask because it'll block off light.
- 11:07Secondly, you can get blackout curtains.
- 11:12You can make blackout panels. So here's hilarious thing for
- 11:16you. So I have blackout curtains.
- 11:18I invested in some really good ones, but I wanted it even
- 11:22darker. So I made blackout curtains or
- 11:25panels. You know what I made them out of
- 11:28It literally cost me $10. I went to the dollar store and I
- 11:32got white Bristol board and I got black Bristol board and duct
- 11:38tape. So I cut out the white and the
- 11:43black Bristol boards to fit in my windows.
- 11:47And then I put the white facing out so that the white is, you
- 11:51know, like it's reflecting back the light so it's not so bright.
- 11:55And then I put the black on the inside and then I just secured
- 11:59around the edge of the windows with the duct tape.
- 12:03Now, you know what, does it look really fancy?
- 12:06Absolutely not. But I'm going to be honest with
- 12:08you, I never open up my curtains anyway during the day.
- 12:12So you can try that. If you want to invest in
- 12:18blackout panels that you can take them off during the day,
- 12:22then absolutely go ahead if that floats your boat, if you got
- 12:25more money. But this is a really simple way
- 12:28to do it. And I will tell you that
- 12:30blocking out the light to the point where you cannot even see
- 12:33your hands is really a game changer.
- 12:37Now for some reason if that doesn't feel safe for you,
- 12:41especially if you have concerns with balance and you have to get
- 12:44up in the middle of the night, then by all means maybe just try
- 12:48the eye mask, OK? Also if you are into essential
- 12:54oils, try diffusing something calming at night.
- 12:58Lavender is really good. It's a simple 1.
- 13:03You can put a few drops in the diffuser, turn that thing on,
- 13:06have it on a low dim light and let it diffuse your space.
- 13:12And then also the temperature in your bedroom.
- 13:16It should not be a furnace in there.
- 13:17It should be quite crisp. You don't sleep well if your
- 13:21body is overheated. If the room is really hot, then
- 13:26turn the temperature down. Even turn off your furnace at
- 13:29night if you can, or turn it to the absolute lowest where you
- 13:33know your pipes aren't going to freeze or something in the
- 13:35middle of the night. You can also open up your window
- 13:38just a tiny little bit to let in fresh air overnight.
- 13:42These are simple changes and literally are like game
- 13:47changers. And I want to tell you another
- 13:50thing, creating this bedtime routine and you know, improving
- 13:56your sleep hygiene, it's not about perfection, it's about
- 14:00permission. This is your permission to slow
- 14:04down. It's your permission to unplug.
- 14:08It's your permission to care for your energy the same way you
- 14:11care for everyone else all day long.
- 14:14It's a way for you to care for your body, your mind.
- 14:19And this is what I want to leave you with.
- 14:22Sleep isn't just rest, it's restoration.
- 14:26There's a big difference between rest and restoration.
- 14:31Restoration is where your body heals, your mind processes, and
- 14:35your spirit resets. And when you start to treat your
- 14:40bedtime as a sacred practice, right, a time to honour your
- 14:47energy instead of just crash and burn, which is what most people
- 14:52are doing, you'll notice that your mornings start to feel
- 14:55lighter, calmer, more aligned. You might even want to try yin
- 15:00yoga in the morning. I even have on my app.
- 15:03This is a big miscanomer. People think that yin is only
- 15:06for night time. While it is very conducive for
- 15:10night time, if the right kind of poses are done in the morning,
- 15:14it can actually bring you energy and set your tone, set your body
- 15:19and your mind for a great day. You release tension, you clear
- 15:24out your mind. It's just a matter of what
- 15:27poses. OK.
- 15:29And I've got a whole series on my app, on the soulful Yin app,
- 15:34the seven mornings of yin yoga. They are all under 15 minutes.
- 15:38They're like one or two poses plus some breath work, a little
- 15:41bit of meditation and literally your whole body and your whole
- 15:46mind resets before you even start your day.
- 15:50I will tell you game changer. So tonight, before you crawl
- 15:55into bed, I want you to take one really deep breath in through
- 16:00the nose and out through the mouth, feel your shoulders drop
- 16:08and just whisper to yourself. I deserve deep restoration
- 16:14because you know what? You absolutely do.
- 16:20So if you want more help starting your bedtime ritual,
- 16:23I've got a full library of yin yoga, breath work, and
- 16:26meditation classes on the Soulful Yin Yoga app, all
