- 1:27Speaker 4: liberated one from someone else. We're going to be helping
- 1:30Speaker 4: to answer a juicy money dilemma which This week is
- 1:32Speaker 4: all about taxes and investing, and we're also going to
- 1:35Speaker 4: unpack something you slid into our dams about. This week,
- 1:37Speaker 4: we're chatting about navigating in laws that are overstepping.
- 1:40Speaker 5: When it comes to presents for your kids. I don't
- 1:44Speaker 5: know how I feel about that one.
- 1:45Speaker 2: I'm excited. I don't know if I am hard always
- 1:50Speaker 2: what did you say?
- 1:51Speaker 6: Just in law stuff? Anything you ever hear, it's always
- 1:55Speaker 6: in laws.
- 1:55Speaker 5: See.
- 1:56Speaker 4: I always feel like all of the Reddit threads are like,
- 1:58Speaker 4: oh my mother in law x Y said. I feel
- 2:00Speaker 4: like I did one thing good and one thing bad
- 2:03Speaker 4: when I got married. I married into a family that had.
- 2:05Speaker 5: A brilliant mother in law. But I also married into
- 2:08Speaker 5: a family that runs.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Yeah, well you can't like it. You can't have it all.
- 2:13Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, you can't have it all.
- 2:15Speaker 4: But like, what do you mean you're still doing marathons ondays?
- 2:20Speaker 4: They go for mornings. Yeah, I just meet them at
- 2:23Speaker 4: the cafe.
- 2:24Speaker 5: Yes. Yeah. And now we have a baby, you guys
- 2:27Speaker 5: go on and run. I'll look after the babies at home.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Is that why you have the baby. I would have
- 2:31Speaker 2: a baby just so I could be like, I can't run.
- 2:34Speaker 2: You guys say.
- 2:35Speaker 4: Week and I was pregnant, like there was just yeah
- 2:38Speaker 4: exactly or anyway, how have your weeks been, miss Beck
- 2:42Speaker 4: say ed, what have you been up to?
- 2:43Speaker 2: It's been a really nice week. My family came to
- 2:45Speaker 2: Melbourne for like the well my mom came once, but
- 2:48Speaker 2: my younger brothers hadn't like come to visits o c.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Seven years ago. It was really really nice. They met
- 2:54Speaker 2: all my friends and like, it's so weeks. I have
- 2:56Speaker 2: the whole world here, a whole like family here and
- 3:00Speaker 2: obviously my family in Sydney as well, but the two
- 3:04Speaker 2: haven't really integrated. Yeah, like not meshs in they haven't
- 3:07Speaker 2: got they literally haven't. And so it was really nice
- 3:11Speaker 2: for my two worlds to come together and be like, oh,
- 3:14Speaker 2: there's this, like there's a.
- 3:16Speaker 5: Whole shit isn't making up having your girlfriend?
- 3:19Speaker 2: Everyone's real, everyone exists and everyone gets along so well.
- 3:22Speaker 2: And it was just like it was a perfect weekend.
- 3:24Speaker 2: It was really really nice.
- 3:26Speaker 5: Love that. Yeah.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Other than that, nothing really Heckedy, it's been going on,
- 3:31Speaker 2: just good living life, live love, laugh, live love laugh.
- 3:34Speaker 6: What about you, Jess, I I mean a fight with
- 3:37Speaker 6: my property managers? Juicy juicy, Yes again, I fear I
- 3:42Speaker 6: am being petty. I don't I know I'm being petty.
- 3:45Speaker 4: Okay, okay, okay, is this like one of those I am?
- 3:48Speaker 4: I the ass whole moment?
- 3:50Speaker 5: All right? Tell us the story.
- 3:52Speaker 6: So our rent, I think our least or like our
- 3:56Speaker 6: month starts on like the fifteenth or something. But in
- 3:58Speaker 6: our lease it says your rent will be ebbitted on
- 4:00Speaker 6: the twelfth, which is totally fine. We find the least.
- 4:02Speaker 6: We knew that we agreed to that.
- 4:03Speaker 5: That's really annoying because you get paid on the fifteenth.
- 4:05Speaker 6: It's fine. I have it all set up so it
- 4:07Speaker 6: like cash.
- 4:08Speaker 5: I was like, yeah, but that would be so frustrated.
- 4:11Speaker 6: A little irritating, but it's fine. We work around it.
- 4:12Speaker 6: We knew that when we signed it. So this month
- 4:15Speaker 6: they took our money out on the tenth or they
- 4:19Speaker 6: attempt it's an autod debit. They attempted to auto debbit
- 4:21Speaker 6: and it bounced because the money wasn't in there because,
- 4:23Speaker 6: as I said, auto transfers.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Yes.
- 4:25Speaker 6: Now, when we signed our least, a little bit of context,
- 4:28Speaker 6: it said that all of the payment methods incurred a fee.
- 4:33Speaker 6: And I said to them, because I used to work
- 4:35Speaker 6: in property, I was like, you actually in Victoria are
- 4:38Speaker 6: legally required to provide me at least one payment method
- 4:40Speaker 6: option that does not incur a fee, like that's the loss.
- 4:43Speaker 6: And they were like, oh, yes, okay.
- 4:44Speaker 5: I would not want to mess with Jess.
- 4:47Speaker 6: I read the t's and c's people anyway, so they
- 4:50Speaker 6: at the time they're like, okay, you can direct debit it.
- 4:52Speaker 6: That is the method that doesn't incur the feet. So
- 4:55Speaker 6: when this auto transfer didn't go through on the tenth,
- 4:58Speaker 6: I got a text from our property manager saying, hey, like,
- 5:00Speaker 6: you need to manually process it because the direct debit
- 5:02Speaker 6: didn't work. There's gonna be like a ninety cent fee
- 5:05Speaker 6: for it. And I said, why am I paying a
- 5:08Speaker 6: ninety cent fee and she said, well, it's only you know,
- 5:11Speaker 6: the method that you're using to pay in cursor fee
- 5:13Speaker 6: to release the money. And I said, okay, but I
- 5:16Speaker 6: like the money didn't come out because you tried to
- 5:18Speaker 6: take it out early, Like if you've taken it out
- 5:20Speaker 6: on the day that we legally agree to in this
- 5:23Speaker 6: binding document, the money was available. And she basically tried
- 5:26Speaker 6: to say, oh no, well, the you know that, it's
- 5:29Speaker 6: just the system, Like, so the system's work, you have
- 5:30Speaker 6: to do. It's the only thing is available.
- 5:32Speaker 5: That's really weird. But you're in breach of your contract. Correct.
- 5:35Speaker 6: So I paid her like straight away. I transferred the
- 5:37Speaker 6: money minus the ninety cent fee, and so and so
- 5:42Speaker 6: I got a text last night from my proberty manager saying, hey,
- 5:44Speaker 6: like you're we need ninety cents to release it to
- 5:47Speaker 6: the like owners. And I said, that's a business expense.
- 5:50Speaker 6: I'm not paying the ninety cent fee. And they said, well,
- 5:53Speaker 6: you should have the money available in your account four
- 5:55Speaker 6: days before the money is due.
- 5:57Speaker 2: To literally we're alle her.
- 6:00Speaker 6: And my exact words were, can you please show me
- 6:02Speaker 6: where in my lease it says the money will be
- 6:04Speaker 6: debitted on the tenth of the month. And I got
- 6:06Speaker 6: no response, and.
- 6:07Speaker 5: I forgot no respond thing since.
- 6:09Speaker 6: And I feel I know that I'm kind of being
- 6:11Speaker 6: as because can I pay the ninety cents obviously, but
- 6:13Speaker 6: the principle of the matter, I get that don't want
- 6:16Speaker 6: to pay it because I'm not in the wrong.
- 6:20Speaker 5: I was like, ould check pay the ninety cents.
- 6:23Speaker 6: I feel like, I'm sure there's property managers listening to
- 6:26Speaker 6: this right now, being like you are why I hate
- 6:28Speaker 6: my job, but we are good tenants, like we've never
- 6:30Speaker 6: ever missed our brant. It's always come out on time.
- 6:33Speaker 6: We look after the house like.
- 6:34Speaker 4: I've got no doubt, and like it's so frustrating because
- 6:37Speaker 4: like that property manager is probably going to be like,
- 6:40Speaker 4: screw it, I'll just pay the ninety cents to her
- 6:42Speaker 4: out of my own pocket because it's the system, not them.
- 6:45Speaker 4: But at the same time, but at the same time,
- 6:48Speaker 4: it's not your problem. And as the property manager, they
- 6:50Speaker 4: should be making sure that the systems work for both
- 6:53Speaker 4: the landlords.
- 6:54Speaker 5: And the tenants.
- 6:55Speaker 4: Because if I owned an investment property and I found
- 6:58Speaker 4: out that the people I was paying to manage my
- 7:01Speaker 4: property were trying to take money off my tenants early,
- 7:05Speaker 4: I'd be.
- 7:06Speaker 5: Pretty pissed off totally. I'd be like, I'm sorry, that's.
- 7:08Speaker 4: Not how we do business here. That's not how that works.
- 7:12Speaker 4: Like you might also like, let's dive a little bit
- 7:15Speaker 4: deeper into this, because I am, if not anything crazy.
- 7:19Speaker 4: What if you had that money invested, that's two days
- 7:22Speaker 4: of interest that you're missing out on because they tried
- 7:24Speaker 4: to take your money early.
- 7:25Speaker 6: Well, that's why I have it like it moves over
- 7:28Speaker 6: a day before, so it's like no matter what time
- 7:30Speaker 6: they try to take it out on the twelfth. It's
- 7:32Speaker 6: always we move it over on the eleventh. But I
- 7:35Speaker 6: wanted to sitting in my account as long as possible.
- 7:36Speaker 6: So I'm like, well, that's interest that I'm that's literally
- 7:40Speaker 6: why I do it that.
- 7:41Speaker 4: Yeah, okay, so it's literally that Isn't that insane to
- 7:44Speaker 4: think that? I don't know, I just feel like that's
- 7:47Speaker 4: so sneaky of them to take it early.
- 7:49Speaker 2: It's such just do that was like it was a Friday.
- 7:51Speaker 5: Well, I don't know.
- 7:52Speaker 6: They like, if it's an automatic system, it should just
- 7:54Speaker 6: auto debit on whatever debt during any I don't know.
- 7:58Speaker 6: Part of me is like, just suck it up and
- 8:00Speaker 6: it's fine, But then part of me is like, no,
- 8:02Speaker 6: stick it to the man.
- 8:03Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I agree with You're in the right.
- 8:05Speaker 6: And this is how like people get taken advantage of
- 8:07Speaker 6: exactly the little things go and then all of a sudden,
- 8:11Speaker 6: your rent's being jacked up six hundred percent I don't know.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Exactly, and before you know it, they'll be like, oh,
- 8:15Speaker 2: you just have to pay a small fee of like
- 8:17Speaker 2: fourteen dollars, and then it's like you just you know,
- 8:19Speaker 2: you just want to you want to stop it right there.
- 8:21Speaker 2: And be like, hey, I know the rules and I
- 8:23Speaker 2: know that this is not allowed. So whether it's ninety
- 8:25Speaker 2: cents or ninety dollars, you do.
- 8:27Speaker 4: I feel like this is e learning though for everybody
- 8:29Speaker 4: in the community. One, you legally are entitled to a
- 8:34Speaker 4: payment method that doesn't incur fee in that'srea of the state,
- 8:38Speaker 4: but like worth looking into for other states really, because
- 8:41Speaker 4: those little things do add up. Also direct debit. I
- 8:45Speaker 4: love a direct abbit. I love not thinking about it.
- 8:47Speaker 4: My phone villain stuff is on direct ebbit and I
- 8:49Speaker 4: always get a text saying, oh, on this date, we're
- 8:52Speaker 4: going to be taking it out of your thing, and
- 8:53Speaker 4: I'm like, great, I'm an adhd girly. If you send
- 8:56Speaker 4: me an invoice and say hey, v this is oh wing,
- 9:00Speaker 4: I'll be like fantastic, of course I'll pay you. And
- 9:02Speaker 4: then I shut my phone and I've forgotten that I
- 9:04Speaker 4: had to do anything, and I'm like, do you want
- 9:05Speaker 4: to go to maccuz Like I am a goldfish. So
- 9:10Speaker 4: the idea that you can direct debit things and set
- 9:12Speaker 4: things up is perfect, but now they're just causing you
- 9:15Speaker 4: even more.
- 9:16Speaker 5: Admin Jess so.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Am I the asshole.
- 9:21Speaker 6: It's probably probably managing like yes you are. I'm sorry.
- 9:24Speaker 5: It's just I'm making your job hard.
- 9:26Speaker 4: But I'm also just asking to be treated with respect
- 9:31Speaker 4: and taking my money early is not respectful.
- 9:34Speaker 2: Four days arbitrary, like you had to have the money
- 9:38Speaker 2: in there four days before processing? Where did that come
- 9:40Speaker 2: from all of a sudden?
- 9:41Speaker 6: And that's what I four days. Yeah, that's what they
- 9:43Speaker 6: tried to say to me.
- 9:44Speaker 4: They were like, what if I don't have the money
- 9:45Speaker 4: four days book exactly, just tell her you get paid
- 9:48Speaker 4: on the eleventh, be like sorry, And if they ask
- 9:52Speaker 4: for an employment contract, call me and it'd be like,
- 9:54Speaker 4: I will make an employment contract to make point, be like,
- 9:57Speaker 4: just didn't have the money because she doesn't get paid
- 9:58Speaker 4: till the day before. And that's why I feel so
- 10:00Speaker 4: comfortable with the twelve being her payment date.
- 10:03Speaker 6: I was thinking about this and I was like, what's
- 10:04Speaker 6: the outcome here? Like either ibend or dybend. And my
- 10:07Speaker 6: partner was like, what happens?
- 10:09Speaker 4: What does your partner say? Because I feel like he's
- 10:11Speaker 4: a little bit more passive like you are. You are
- 10:14Speaker 4: a lot like no, I'm going to stick it to
- 10:16Speaker 4: the man, and your partner is gonna be like, es
- 10:18Speaker 4: pay the ninety cents.
- 10:19Speaker 6: I stormed into his study through the door open last
- 10:22Speaker 6: night when I was texting him and I was like,
- 10:24Speaker 6: I'm not paying.
- 10:25Speaker 5: And you were like paying, what give me some content?
- 10:28Speaker 6: Like I've no idea what you're talking about. And he's like, okay,
- 10:30Speaker 6: that's cool, and he said what, like what happens, Like
- 10:33Speaker 6: if you don't pay and they go you have to
- 10:34Speaker 6: pay and you don't like what happens? And I was like, well, theoretically,
- 10:37Speaker 6: worst case scenario, it goes into a reason, it goes
- 10:40Speaker 6: to VCA. And he's like, would you go to VCA
- 10:43Speaker 6: over ninety cents? And I was like, I reckon. I would, Yes,
- 10:46Speaker 6: I reckon the people.
- 10:48Speaker 4: You know what this is telling me about me? Yes,
- 10:50Speaker 4: this is telling me she doesn't have enough work.
- 10:52Speaker 2: You're yeah, you have done nothing wrong. Technically, would all
- 10:57Speaker 2: be on your side? They would be on your side.
- 11:00Speaker 5: I will pay your ninety cents?
- 11:01Speaker 6: Is giving ninety suing the dude for a dollar?
- 11:04Speaker 5: Yeah, that was pretty iconic, though.
- 11:05Speaker 2: I don't know what happened there, but I don't know
- 11:07Speaker 2: if that's on.
- 11:07Speaker 5: The same page anyway, moving on, it's just agreed.
- 11:12Speaker 4: You've been in the Facebook group this week, so I
- 11:14Speaker 4: have been replying to a few of the money wins
- 11:16Speaker 4: because I've been like, hey, that slip. What have you
- 11:18Speaker 4: pulled out of the group to share with the community
- 11:20Speaker 4: this week?
- 11:21Speaker 6: All right, starting off with a little bit of a
- 11:22Speaker 6: self serving one, but it just brought me a lot
- 11:24Speaker 6: of joy from Maddie, who said, after months of binging
- 11:27Speaker 6: the podcast, she's officially listened to every single episode.
- 11:31Speaker 4: Wow, we have one hundreds, we have more than six
- 11:34Speaker 4: hundred episodes.
- 11:35Speaker 6: Yes, wow, that's impressive, simply a matter of months. Well done, Maddie.
- 11:39Speaker 6: It is really exciting to me that, like we can
- 11:41Speaker 6: obviously see on the back end people listening, like what
- 11:43Speaker 6: episodes people listen to? Yeah, yeah, crazy that people still
- 11:46Speaker 6: listen to episode number one, and like quite a lot
- 11:48Speaker 6: of people.
- 11:49Speaker 4: Really embarrassing too, So yeah, maybe don't do that. But
- 11:53Speaker 4: if you've done that, thank you. I really appreciate it.
- 11:56Speaker 4: But oh I can't do it.
- 11:59Speaker 5: I don't know if you.
- 12:00Speaker 4: Know about this editing process, but I don't listen to
- 12:03Speaker 4: any of our podcasts back. That's why I'm so grateful
- 12:05Speaker 4: to have our producer, Emma, and we've got an audio engineer.
- 12:08Speaker 4: They do all of it. Because if you ask me
- 12:10Speaker 4: to listen to my own voice. I basically just.
- 12:13Speaker 5: I throw it. I can't, I can't do it.
- 12:15Speaker 4: It gives me the heavy GBA, which is hilarious because
- 12:19Speaker 4: my entire career is currently.
- 12:21Speaker 5: Built on my voice. But I won't have a bar
- 12:23Speaker 5: of it. I'm like ew David.
- 12:25Speaker 6: Ooh, well done, Maddie and anyone else who's listening. Can't
- 12:29Speaker 6: wait for you to catch up here. Next, I've got
- 12:31Speaker 6: a money in from Candace who said she went to
- 12:33Speaker 6: Savers and got her toddler an entire twenty five piece
- 12:36Speaker 6: summer wardrobe, squirts, t shirts, shorts, skirts, cardies, the whole shebang.
- 12:42Speaker 6: Some of it was brand new with tags and it
- 12:44Speaker 6: was under seventy dollars for the lot.
- 12:46Speaker 2: Wow.
- 12:47Speaker 6: I just wanted to say, there's heaps of kids stuff
- 12:48Speaker 6: at the up shop, Like I have a friend who
- 12:50Speaker 6: also loves to thrift and sometimes if I find something
- 12:52Speaker 6: really cute for her kids, off to buy it, like
- 12:54Speaker 6: you wash it. I don't think that's weird.
- 12:55Speaker 4: I bought literally my mum and I were walking down
- 12:57Speaker 4: the main street on the weekend and we walked past
- 13:00Speaker 4: the oup shop and we can't not go in an
- 13:02Speaker 4: up shop like I always have to look, and I
- 13:04Speaker 4: bought a new bonds onesie, like it's just bonds, but
- 13:07Speaker 4: I had a brand new tag on it and it
- 13:09Speaker 4: was three dollarsgain exactly and it was real cute. And
- 13:12Speaker 4: I was like, that's Harve size and you always need
- 13:14Speaker 4: more onesies.
- 13:14Speaker 6: So money win, well done. Next, I've got a money
- 13:18Speaker 6: win from at Tinneil, who said she finally took the
- 13:20Speaker 6: leap to invest the ten dollars that she had gotten
- 13:23Speaker 6: from Cheers EA's when she signed up with the SotM code.
- 13:27Speaker 6: She looked at it the other day and it's gone
- 13:29Speaker 6: up by five cents.
- 13:31Speaker 4: Your money that you didn't make making money for you
- 13:35Speaker 4: and you're going to get.
- 13:35Speaker 5: Rich, small fish.
- 13:37Speaker 6: But I didn't spend a cent and I already have
- 13:38Speaker 6: a return.
- 13:39Speaker 5: Have you invested anymore?
- 13:42Speaker 2: How's that going extra?
- 13:43Speaker 4: You don't have to put extra in? Have you been
- 13:45Speaker 4: like shuffling things around? I know that you hadn't invested
- 13:48Speaker 4: the full amount yet.
- 13:49Speaker 2: I am, well, actually currently it's all in one. I
- 13:52Speaker 2: believe it's an e F T the ETF. Thank you. Yes,
- 13:57Speaker 2: it's an inn in the ETF.
- 14:00Speaker 6: This.
- 14:00Speaker 2: I love this ffos, isn't it? Yeah? Meaning I spent
- 14:06Speaker 2: it we're getting there.
- 14:08Speaker 6: And next I've got a money in from Renee, who
- 14:11Speaker 6: said she's another person slowly making away through the podcast
- 14:14Speaker 6: from the beginning, but she listened to a specific episode.
- 14:17Speaker 6: It was the money Diary called is It Worth It?
- 14:19Speaker 6: Let Me Work It from twenty twenty, and that Diaris
- 14:22Speaker 6: mentioned that whenever she decides not to make an impulsive purchase,
- 14:26Speaker 6: she transfers the amount of money that she would have
- 14:27Speaker 6: spent straight into her savings. So Renee listened to the
- 14:30Speaker 6: episode started to implement that, and she said she's saved
- 14:33Speaker 6: an extra one hundred and forty bucks in a week.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Howry is that crazy?
- 14:37Speaker 4: I also really love that people are one listening to
- 14:39Speaker 4: our old episodes. But there's always like really tiny tips
- 14:43Speaker 4: and tricks throughout all of our episodes that might resonate
- 14:46Speaker 4: with you or might not Like that might not have
- 14:48Speaker 4: worked for somebody else, but she's like, oh my gosh,
- 14:51Speaker 4: this really works for me. I love that you're picking
- 14:53Speaker 4: up so many things from old content. Also, can we
- 14:57Speaker 4: just like appreciate how good I used to be at
- 14:59Speaker 4: NAM Yeah?
- 15:00Speaker 5: I used to try so hard.
- 15:04Speaker 6: Yeah, And I'm sure that director is really excited to
- 15:06Speaker 6: know that her little tip helped someone else too. And
- 15:09Speaker 6: then lastly this week, I have money in from Madeleine
- 15:12Speaker 6: who said she sold some stuff on Facebook marketplace over
- 15:14Speaker 6: the weekend. She made an extra seven hundred dollars, putting
- 15:17Speaker 6: it towards her daughter's Christmas present.
- 15:19Speaker 5: Seven hundred bucks.
- 15:21Speaker 6: Said it last week or the week before, I don't remember.
- 15:23Speaker 6: It's spring cleaning season. People sell it, sell it when
- 15:27Speaker 6: you clean it out because you'd be amazed at what
- 15:28Speaker 6: people will buy.
- 15:29Speaker 4: So I did this last season, and I mean, let's
- 15:33Speaker 4: be honest, I was also pregnant, so I didn't fit
- 15:35Speaker 4: in a lot of my outfits, so it felt productive
- 15:38Speaker 4: during that period of time. But I turned all of
- 15:40Speaker 4: my coat hangers around the opposite way in my wardrobe
- 15:44Speaker 4: so that I could start tracking what I was actually
- 15:46Speaker 4: reaching for and what I hadn't touched. And that was
- 15:49Speaker 4: like a year ago. And I just went through my
- 15:51Speaker 4: wardrobe over the weekend and pulled out so many things
- 15:54Speaker 4: that I thought were cute that I actually don't wear
- 15:57Speaker 4: because it's been more than twelve months since I've even
- 16:00Speaker 4: reached for them, because the code hang is still around
- 16:02Speaker 4: the wrong way.
- 16:03Speaker 5: So that's a tip that you could definitely implement.
- 16:06Speaker 4: If you're someone like me who I struggled to separate
- 16:08Speaker 4: from items. Sometimes I'm like, oh, but I might wear it, Victoria,
- 16:12Speaker 4: it's been in your wardrobe for two years, untouched, Like,
- 16:14Speaker 4: you don't need that.
- 16:15Speaker 6: Once you sell a few things, it's like a high
- 16:17Speaker 6: You're like, what else can?
- 16:18Speaker 1: You? Are?
- 16:19Speaker 4: A deep pop queen though, like and you also like
- 16:22Speaker 4: style your items to a tea.
- 16:24Speaker 5: It was so funny.
- 16:25Speaker 4: Actually, I was looking up Scanlan Theodore on Deep Hop
- 16:28Speaker 4: because those dresses are my favorite, but they are so expensive,
- 16:32Speaker 4: and I was like, that.
- 16:33Speaker 5: Looks familiar and it was I was like, not what
- 16:37Speaker 5: I'm looking for, but pop off. Just I clicked it
- 16:43Speaker 5: and I was like, oh, that looks really cute. That
- 16:44Speaker 5: looks like Jess. It's Jess.
- 16:47Speaker 6: That is hilarious.
- 16:48Speaker 2: I know exactly.
- 16:49Speaker 6: The rest hasn't sold yet. Once it's going cheap money,
- 16:53Speaker 6: amaze it. That's all the money winds I've got this week.
- 16:55Speaker 2: I love it, great, great, great winds.
- 16:57Speaker 5: Alright, what broke tips have you got to bring to
- 16:59Speaker 5: the tape?
- 17:00Speaker 2: Okay, so did you say the word lubrated before?
- 17:03Speaker 5: Did I get that right?
- 17:03Speaker 6: No?
- 17:04Speaker 5: That lubrated?
- 17:05Speaker 2: I liberated, liberated, liberated.
- 17:08Speaker 5: Sorry, uberrated, liberated.
- 17:09Speaker 6: Might be something else.
- 17:10Speaker 5: I feel like that's something very different. Liberated.
- 17:13Speaker 2: Well, I was gonna say, great that you've mentioned lubrated,
- 17:17Speaker 2: because this is my tip for the week, but I
- 17:20Speaker 2: will actually cut that one out. So anyway, let's go
- 17:23Speaker 2: straight into the two from the community. The first one
- 17:26Speaker 2: comes from of our listeners who sent me a photo
- 17:27Speaker 2: of an advert from her library. So it's called library Things.
- 17:32Speaker 2: I think this is Queensland, this is Townsville. But I'm
- 17:35Speaker 2: sure how did you say Queensland Queensland?
- 17:37Speaker 6: She said Queensland, Queensland.
- 17:45Speaker 5: Maybe they say lubrated in queens.
- 17:48Speaker 2: That's where we got it from. Yes, so Queensland, in
- 17:52Speaker 2: Townsville in particular, but I'm sure there are other places
- 17:54Speaker 2: around Australia. So this place you can, you know, obviously,
- 17:58Speaker 2: not only borrow books. You can get board games, science equipment,
- 18:02Speaker 2: musical instruments, sewing equipment, which I.
- 18:04Speaker 5: Think board games.
- 18:05Speaker 4: That's it.
- 18:05Speaker 2: It's so cool, Like we have mentioned things like sewing
- 18:07Speaker 2: equipment and stuff like that before, but like science equipment.
- 18:10Speaker 2: I didn't know there was a thing in board games.
- 18:11Speaker 5: I think it's incredible. Like if you have questions, what
- 18:13Speaker 5: are you doing with science equipment at home, Like.
- 18:15Speaker 2: Why do you think borrow mainly for you know, because
- 18:18Speaker 2: right now it's it's holidays, school holidays everywhere? Or is
- 18:22Speaker 2: it just in Victoria.
- 18:23Speaker 5: I wouldn't even know where to start.
- 18:25Speaker 4: The only science thing that I know of is mixing
- 18:28Speaker 4: by cub with vinegar and creating a volcano.
- 18:31Speaker 2: I mean, is timeless in school? Maybe like the stars
- 18:38Speaker 2: or something. There was a form today a telescope, yes, exactly,
- 18:43Speaker 2: I could. And the other reason because there's a kid
- 18:45Speaker 2: in this photo with a telescope.
- 18:46Speaker 5: That's perfect.
- 18:47Speaker 2: Board games if you just want to entertain your kids,
- 18:49Speaker 2: love a board game, love for board game. Oh my goodness,
- 18:52Speaker 2: don't get me start on the board games. Okay, I
- 18:56Speaker 2: love Katan.
- 18:56Speaker 4: We have mentioned this, but we're having a night soon,
- 19:00Speaker 4: so you'll have to Yeah, yeah.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Yeah, goodness. I'm really, really, genuinely really excited for that.
- 19:05Speaker 5: Okay, all right, it's on.
- 19:06Speaker 1: It's on. Yes.
- 19:08Speaker 2: The sex one comes from Michelle, who suggests waiting till
- 19:11Speaker 2: February to buy your yearly diary or calendar because they
- 19:15Speaker 2: have to die socally.
- 19:16Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 19:16Speaker 2: I think it's great because January and if you want
- 19:19Speaker 2: to even just write it on like a notepad and
- 19:21Speaker 2: wait until you get your diary or calendar and then
- 19:25Speaker 2: enter all the things.
- 19:26Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 19:26Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 19:27Speaker 2: I don't really use diaries calendar.
- 19:28Speaker 6: Sometimes they're like ninety percent off, like they go yeah.
- 19:30Speaker 6: I think they get to a point where businesses are
- 19:33Speaker 6: just like get them out of here, no one's going
- 19:34Speaker 6: to buy them now.
- 19:35Speaker 4: If I'm being honest, I am the person that will
- 19:37Speaker 4: wait till February to buy my calendar. Yeah, and then
- 19:41Speaker 4: I use it for a month and then forget it exists. Yes,
- 19:44Speaker 4: me too, so motivated to use it, and they'll go
- 19:47Speaker 4: down to Kiki k and buy a really esthetic one
- 19:49Speaker 4: and it'll be like this is my year, yes, and
- 19:53Speaker 4: then it's not my year, and so I make the
- 19:55Speaker 4: resolution to make it my year the next year. Totally
- 19:58Speaker 4: do that on repeat, and I have di for the
- 20:00Speaker 4: last thirty three years.
- 20:01Speaker 2: Absolutely so really like that day when you go out
- 20:04Speaker 2: and you buy a calendar, that or a diary or
- 20:06Speaker 2: a journal, that's when you spring.
- 20:08Speaker 5: It just feels good.
- 20:09Speaker 2: It feels really good, but only the strongest of us
- 20:14Speaker 2: and we stare it.
- 20:17Speaker 4: Follow up, I just have to use my phone calendar,
- 20:20Speaker 4: like at the end of the day, having outlook it
- 20:24Speaker 4: just it beats it. I'm just not a paper diary girlie.
- 20:27Speaker 2: No, I mean the thoughts there, and I think that's
- 20:30Speaker 2: all that matters, isn't it. Okay, this next one comes
- 20:32Speaker 2: from me aka producer, our producer. You liberated it from Emma.
- 20:37Speaker 4: I liberated it, not liberted it, liberated it from Memo.
- 20:42Speaker 2: Not yet. So this one is for all of my
- 20:46Speaker 2: Meredith girlies and boys and they them's. It's for if
- 20:50Speaker 2: you're like me and you don't want to be spending like,
- 20:52Speaker 2: what is it like four hundred and fifty dollars now
- 20:54Speaker 2: on a crazy ticket to Meredith.
- 20:56Speaker 4: You are not getting me to spend four hundred and
- 20:58Speaker 4: fifty dollars to wear gum boots. Absolutely not, absolutely not.
- 21:01Speaker 5: You want me definitely. No, we're not gramping, like why glamp?
- 21:05Speaker 5: Just go to a hotel. Just go to a hotel.
- 21:08Speaker 4: And that sounds so entitled, but even the money aside,
- 21:12Speaker 4: I'm going to just stay.
- 21:13Speaker 2: Home, Yeah, that's true. Can't afford it.
- 21:15Speaker 4: No, it's not even about affording it glamping. Why did
- 21:18Speaker 4: you pack your entire life up?
- 21:21Speaker 2: I do agree.
- 21:22Speaker 4: You have all of those creature comforts, which I totally get.
- 21:25Speaker 5: I could have just.
- 21:26Speaker 4: Stayed at home. I could have just stayed home and
- 21:29Speaker 4: not packed.
- 21:30Speaker 2: It is the worst part of Meredith is knowing that
- 21:33Speaker 2: you all you want to do at the end of
- 21:35Speaker 2: the night or the end of the early early morning
- 21:38Speaker 2: is go home to your bed, but you have to
- 21:40Speaker 2: lay in the.
- 21:41Speaker 6: Dirty from everything. Is that way everyone camps?
- 21:45Speaker 2: Like is it here nowhere?
- 21:46Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 21:46Speaker 2: It is quite fat and also like you want to
- 21:48Speaker 2: be driving around at that time, you know, to go
- 21:50Speaker 2: back to your hotel.
- 21:51Speaker 4: I do feel like I should preface this as well,
- 21:53Speaker 4: because I think if you've not met me properly, you
- 21:56Speaker 4: might go, oh, Victoria hasn't tried camping. She doesn't get it. Guys,
- 22:00Speaker 4: was a scout. Not only was I a scout, I
- 22:02Speaker 4: was a venturer. I was a very cool teenager. I
- 22:05Speaker 4: did jamboree, I did cubbery. I did all of those things.
- 22:09Speaker 4: Like I did all of the camping things, all of
- 22:12Speaker 4: the hiking things.
- 22:13Speaker 5: I have the experience to say, stay.
- 22:15Speaker 2: At home, scream cool.
- 22:18Speaker 5: I was actually there.
- 22:19Speaker 4: Called thank you, I I'll say, the captain of the
- 22:21Speaker 4: debating team. So so she didn't see that coming.
- 22:23Speaker 2: Oh that's very I did not see that coming. So
- 22:27Speaker 2: I usually use. I'm sure like those who go to
- 22:29Speaker 2: Meredith probably are in the Meredith ticket by swap cell
- 22:33Speaker 2: groups and things like that, but I did not know
- 22:35Speaker 2: about this. It's called Auntie's Unofficial ticket Swap, and I
- 22:39Speaker 2: did this a few years ago, but it was very,
- 22:42Speaker 2: very very by chance. It was a complete fluke. I
- 22:44Speaker 2: got really cheap tickets at the last minute, and I've
- 22:46Speaker 2: been trying to do that every year since end up
- 22:49Speaker 2: not going. But if you go to Auntie's an official
- 22:51Speaker 2: ticket swap, you wait till the last minute, maybe a
- 22:53Speaker 2: couple days in advance. People start getting stressed, like I
- 22:56Speaker 2: can't go anymore. I need to sell this ticket, and
- 22:58Speaker 2: they tend to give them away very cheap.
- 23:01Speaker 4: That's a good money win, because you don't want to
- 23:03Speaker 4: be stuck with a five hundred dollars ticket that you
- 23:05Speaker 4: can't use, knowing that somebody else really wanted to use it.
- 23:08Speaker 2: Got some cash exactly exactly, So keep an eye out
- 23:13Speaker 2: and don't be like me. The last couple of years
- 23:15Speaker 2: I couldn't go just because I was waiting. I would
- 23:18Speaker 2: wait until the Saturday of Meredith. You're in sa nighttime
- 23:21Speaker 2: and the Sunday morning be like, hey, guys, I'm still
- 23:24Speaker 2: I still will take a ticket. Have you got four hours?
- 23:28Speaker 2: Not yet, because I am going to wait to get
- 23:32Speaker 2: So should we.
- 23:32Speaker 4: Do a little call out right now and say, if
- 23:34Speaker 4: you're planning on selling your ticket, peck might like them.
- 23:37Speaker 2: I might like them. I'll pay reasonable price. That is
- 23:41Speaker 2: my book to week.
- 23:42Speaker 5: I love that.
- 23:44Speaker 4: I feel like this has been very well rounded, very lubricated.
- 23:50Speaker 4: Let's go to a really quick break on the flip side.
- 23:52Speaker 4: We're going to have a chat that probably only I'm
- 23:54Speaker 4: interested in, and that's about taxes and investing. Then we're
- 23:57Speaker 4: going to unpack something that you're slead into our DMS
- 23:59Speaker 4: about This week, we talked about navigating in laws who
- 24:01Speaker 4: overstep when it comes to purchasing kids' presence.
- 24:04Speaker 5: So don't go anywhere.
- 24:10Speaker 6: Welcome back, everybody. Let's take a listen to this week's
- 24:12Speaker 6: money dilemma.
- 24:15Speaker 4: Hi, there, have you got a money dilemma you just
- 24:18Speaker 4: can't solve? The She's on the Money team is here

- 24:24Speaker 4: and small, to answer your most burning money, career and
- 24:26Speaker 4: life questions. To get involved, simply head to our website
- 24:30Speaker 4: and leave us a short voice recording and you might
- 24:32Speaker 4: just find yourself on the show. Now, let's take a
- 24:34Speaker 4: listen to this week's money Dilemma.
- 24:39Speaker 7: Hi, ve Beck and Jess. I just want to say
- 24:42Speaker 7: I'm a huge fan of the podcast, and I have
- 24:45Speaker 7: a money dilemma and it's about micro investing. So I
- 24:49Speaker 7: currently have two microinvesting platforms set up, but I'd like
- 24:54Speaker 7: to move approximately two thousand dollars from one platform to
- 24:59Speaker 7: the other. And I just wanted to find out what
- 25:02Speaker 7: the tax implications were of this or anything else that
- 25:05Speaker 7: I would need to keep in mind. Thank you so much. Bye.
- 25:08Speaker 4: I feel like this is a really good question because
- 25:10Speaker 4: so many people go from micro investing platforms and then
- 25:13Speaker 4: graduate to a bigger platform, or they just want to
- 25:15Speaker 4: switch and change. And like, Jess, I know you and
- 25:18Speaker 4: I have been on spaceship and we've both had rais
- 25:20Speaker 4: and like we kind of like mess around with lots
- 25:22Speaker 4: when we're finding our feet.
- 25:23Speaker 5: In investing land.
- 25:25Speaker 4: So the unfortunate thing is, while you said you want
- 25:28Speaker 4: to move two thousand dollars, I don't know how much
- 25:30Speaker 4: of that is profit. So it's quite challenging to give
- 25:32Speaker 4: advice on that. Let's pretend for a hot second, though,
- 25:35Speaker 4: that it's just two grands straight, There's going to be
- 25:37Speaker 4: a few things to take into consideration. So the first
- 25:40Speaker 4: thing is has that money been invested for more than
- 25:43Speaker 4: twelve months.
- 25:44Speaker 5: If so, you're in a good.
- 25:46Speaker 4: Position because yes, while you'll still have to pay capital
- 25:49Speaker 4: gains tax on that, the profit will be taxed at
- 25:51Speaker 4: fifty percent your marginal tax rate. If you own an
- 25:55Speaker 4: asset for less than twelve months, make a profit and
- 25:58Speaker 4: then sell, the profit will be tax at your marginal
- 26:01Speaker 4: tax rate. And we pay tax on money that we earn.
- 26:04Speaker 4: In saying that, if it's two thousand dollars that has
- 26:07Speaker 4: been I guess roundups, So maybe you've rounded up every
- 26:11Speaker 4: single purchase and it's been over the last twelve months,
- 26:13Speaker 4: and yeah, you haven't been invested for that long. But
- 26:16Speaker 4: like most of that two thousand dollars is actually your
- 26:18Speaker 4: own cash that you've put in. There's not going to
- 26:21Speaker 4: be any tax payable on that because it's not profit.
- 26:23Speaker 4: It's just your cash that's been put to the side.
- 26:26Speaker 4: You actually already paid tax on that when it came
- 26:28Speaker 4: into your bank account.
- 26:30Speaker 5: But we are.
- 26:30Speaker 4: Only paying tax on money that we earned. I think
- 26:33Speaker 4: so many times people are really stressed because they go,
- 26:36Speaker 4: oh my god, jesz, Like I've got two grand invested.
- 26:39Speaker 4: What am I going to be taxed? Or is that
- 26:41Speaker 4: two thousand dollars profit? Or is that two thousand dollars
- 26:43Speaker 4: that like you chipped away and built out, But it
- 26:45Speaker 4: hasn't been invested for long enough to have been able
- 26:48Speaker 4: to compound yet, So therefore you're not in that tricky
- 26:51Speaker 4: of a situation. Unfortunately, when you're selling and moving from
- 26:55Speaker 4: a micro investing platform because of the way that you
- 26:58Speaker 4: own that asset, that asset is owned in the same
- 27:02Speaker 4: way that an ETF is, and that's under a trust,
- 27:05Speaker 4: which means you can't just transfer it to another platform
- 27:08Speaker 4: without triggering a CGT event. So when you trigger a
- 27:12Speaker 4: CDT event, it means you have to pay some tax. Sometimes,
- 27:15Speaker 4: like let's pretend you owned and I always use a
- 27:17Speaker 4: nab share. I don't know why, but let's say you
- 27:19Speaker 4: own a nab share direct through like comseec jess, and
- 27:22Speaker 4: you wanted to move it to another platform. If you
- 27:25Speaker 4: transferred it, you would do this is probably getting a
- 27:28Speaker 4: little bit technical, but like we like to know, you
- 27:31Speaker 4: would do what's called an interspecies transfer. And when you
- 27:34Speaker 4: do that, you're just moving from one platform to another,
- 27:36Speaker 4: but you're never selling anything. But when you're selling down
- 27:40Speaker 4: from a micro investing platform, you can't do that. You
- 27:43Speaker 4: actually have to sell down that entire asset and then
- 27:46Speaker 4: buy something on another platform. Therefore, you are going to
- 27:49Speaker 4: trigger a tax event. And in this situation, you are
- 27:53Speaker 4: triggering a capital gains tax event, which means that you
- 27:56Speaker 4: need to pay tax on your profit.
- 27:58Speaker 5: Does that make sense?
- 28:00Speaker 6: It what happens if you sell it at a loss.
- 28:02Speaker 4: If you sell it at a loss, you get a
- 28:04Speaker 4: little certificate in your tax, meaning that in the coming
- 28:07Speaker 4: years you can offset the profit that you make, which
- 28:10Speaker 4: is really cool. And let's say that you have a
- 28:12Speaker 4: couple because you said that you had two different platforms.
- 28:15Speaker 4: Let's say the one that you're selling you're making a loss,
- 28:17Speaker 4: but the other one you've made a profit in that
- 28:19Speaker 4: same year. You can claim both on your tax and
- 28:22Speaker 4: they'll offset one another.
- 28:24Speaker 6: Oh money in It's actually pretty easy. I sold down
- 28:27Speaker 6: my spaceship actually this year. I moved it because I
- 28:29Speaker 6: haven't use it anymore. No, and I exactly that I
- 28:33Speaker 6: was waiting because it was at a pretty significant loss.
- 28:35Speaker 6: I was just waiting for it to bounce back. Up
- 28:37Speaker 6: and yeah, got close enough. I still sold it at
- 28:38Speaker 6: a loss, but it got close enough too, but you
- 28:40Speaker 6: can claim that on your tax. Well that's exactly right.
- 28:42Speaker 6: I was like, it'll offset what I got through my chares,
- 28:44Speaker 6: used tends, whatever. But it's really simple. When you close
- 28:46Speaker 6: your account, they'll generally give you like some kind of
- 28:48Speaker 6: certificate or form that says you sold x amount, this
- 28:52Speaker 6: is your profit slash loss and that's what you used
- 28:54Speaker 6: to input at tax time.
- 28:55Speaker 5: Yeah, and hold of that.
- 28:56Speaker 4: And when you sell down, you're not losing your account,
- 29:00Speaker 4: so you can still log in and get all your
- 29:02Speaker 4: tax reporting. So it's not like deleting your account. I mean,
- 29:05Speaker 4: you can do that in the future, but what I
- 29:07Speaker 4: would do is trigger the sale, and then after you've
- 29:10Speaker 4: triggered the sale, you can go and download all of
- 29:12Speaker 4: your tax reports, including you know, what you sold it for,
- 29:15Speaker 4: so was it a profit or a loss? Save that
- 29:17Speaker 4: for later, and then if you want to close your
- 29:19Speaker 4: account then you can, but I'd wait to make sure
- 29:21Speaker 4: that I have all the reporting so it doesn't get
- 29:23Speaker 4: messy in saying that. If you have closed it, you
- 29:25Speaker 4: can just email the company and they'll be able to
- 29:27Speaker 4: generate it for you.
- 29:28Speaker 5: And that shouldn't be in issues, just another step of admin.
- 29:31Speaker 5: And Jess doesn't pay ninety cents for admin.
- 29:33Speaker 1: No.
- 29:33Speaker 4: I I feel like that was a good but very
- 29:38Speaker 4: technical question.
- 29:39Speaker 5: So there's not a lot of like, Jess, what would
- 29:41Speaker 5: you do?
- 29:41Speaker 4: But I don't want you giving that advice this time, Jess,
- 29:43Speaker 4: because let's be honest.
- 29:45Speaker 5: I know I'm right.
- 29:45Speaker 4: But that is also why we've just added a bonus
- 29:48Speaker 4: module to my Investing masterclass as well, all about taxes,
- 29:51Speaker 4: because we get a lot of questions and while throughout
- 29:54Speaker 4: the course we do cover taxes, I wanted to have
- 29:57Speaker 4: a really specific module so that there's like old clarity.
- 30:00Speaker 4: I was just like, all right, let's make sure that
- 30:03Speaker 4: this exists and that there's bonus modules. And that's actually
- 30:06Speaker 4: something that I'm getting really excited about. We keep adding
- 30:10Speaker 4: all of these bonus modules. Hasn't even come out yet,
- 30:12Speaker 4: just like people aren't even in the course yet officially,
- 30:15Speaker 4: and I keep being like, what about a bonus module
- 30:17Speaker 4: on this? What about a bonus module on that? And
- 30:20Speaker 4: the cool thing is if you are part of the
- 30:21Speaker 4: Investing Masterclass, you have lifetime access and any bonus content
- 30:25Speaker 4: I create in the future will appear on your course
- 30:28Speaker 4: as well, even if you you know, started right now.
- 30:30Speaker 4: It's not for like other people. It's not to sell
- 30:33Speaker 4: even more of it. It's literally to add more value
- 30:36Speaker 4: to the people that are already in the course because
- 30:38Speaker 4: we've all got questions and it's my job to answer them.
- 30:41Speaker 6: Amazing. There's I think one week left to sign up,
- 30:44Speaker 6: so there is, and.
- 30:45Speaker 4: Will put a little cheeky discount code in the show
- 30:48Speaker 4: notes as well, So if you've been thinking about signing
- 30:50Speaker 4: up now as a time my friend exciting. Do you
- 30:53Speaker 4: want to get into a little sneaky DM that we
- 30:55Speaker 4: got this week?
- 30:56Speaker 5: Guys? Yes, absolutely, Becky's drawing an Apple Core. Are you
- 31:02Speaker 5: awa that boring?
- 31:04Speaker 2: Do you want me to draw on for you?
- 31:07Speaker 5: Nope, I don't want it at all.
- 31:08Speaker 4: All right, here is our DM of the week. Hey,
- 31:12Speaker 4: she's on the money. I'm a parent with a bit
- 31:14Speaker 4: of a dilemma. Money's always been tight since having my kids,
- 31:17Speaker 4: and I can't afford to go all.
- 31:19Speaker 5: Out for their birthday's lack. I'd want to.
- 31:21Speaker 4: It's tough, but I've been doing my best to make
- 31:23Speaker 4: it special with thoughtful gifts and quality time. The problem
- 31:27Speaker 4: is my in laws always swoop in and outshine me
- 31:30Speaker 4: with big, expensive presents. Don't get me wrong, I really
- 31:33Speaker 4: appreciate their generosity, but it's starting to make me feel
- 31:36Speaker 4: really inadequate. I'm the parent, and I want to be
- 31:39Speaker 4: the one who creates the happiest memories for my child.
- 31:42Speaker 4: I don't want to seem ungrateful, but it's really getting
- 31:44Speaker 4: to me. How can I make sure my child remembers
- 31:47Speaker 4: the love not the price tag?
- 31:49Speaker 2: I think, honestly, like kids don't know. It's really like,
- 31:52Speaker 2: you know, it could be different for every scenario. I
- 31:54Speaker 2: don't know what they're buying, but kids don't know how
- 31:57Speaker 2: much things are worth. They have no concept of money.
- 32:00Speaker 4: Are we talking like twelve year olds who yeah, starting
- 32:02Speaker 4: to ask for things from Mecca? Are are we talking
- 32:05Speaker 4: like two and three? And like they're just like the
- 32:07Speaker 4: cardboard box, you.
- 32:07Speaker 2: Know, totally totally. And also like I feel like we
- 32:09Speaker 2: all have those relatives. I mean that's really privileged to say.
- 32:13Speaker 2: I feel like some of us have those relatives that like,
- 32:15Speaker 2: you know, when you'd go visit your grandparents, like they're
- 32:17Speaker 2: going to give you twenty dollars secretly, Like you just
- 32:19Speaker 2: know that there are certain people in your world that
- 32:21Speaker 2: give you certain things, and it's really exciting. Like I remember,
- 32:24Speaker 2: like I still associate my dad's side of the family
- 32:28Speaker 2: with biscuits, and I still associate my mommar with twenty
- 32:32Speaker 2: dollars every now and then, you know, So we all
- 32:34Speaker 2: like kind of get little things from from every kind
- 32:36Speaker 2: of part of our life. And it's not all about
- 32:38Speaker 2: like monetary value whatsoever. I can totally understand that you
- 32:43Speaker 2: having full understanding, like full idea, the full picture of
- 32:46Speaker 2: like what money means and how how important it is
- 32:50Speaker 2: to you and all that kind of stuff I understand
- 32:52Speaker 2: for you, you can totally see that that would well,
- 32:55Speaker 2: that like does make you feel inadequate, like I can't
- 32:58Speaker 2: spend this amount of money or likes and therefore I
- 33:01Speaker 2: feel like I'm not doing enough what they're doing more
- 33:05Speaker 2: or whatever. But honestly, with the kids, like they're not
- 33:07Speaker 2: gonna they don't have that kind that's.
- 33:10Speaker 5: I don't remember. Honestly, I don't remember it at all. Jess.
- 33:13Speaker 5: What he do remember from growing up and getting gifts
- 33:16Speaker 5: is literally.
- 33:17Speaker 6: Like thinking back, like I can't can barely remember any
- 33:20Speaker 6: of the gifts I ever got, and the things that
- 33:22Speaker 6: I do remember will experience things that I did my parents,
- 33:25Speaker 6: like I remember one, Yeah, we went to Disney on Ice,
- 33:28Speaker 6: and I don't remember a single.
- 33:29Speaker 4: Bit that I was so jealous of all the kids
- 33:31Speaker 4: that got to go to that I never went, but
- 33:33Speaker 4: that would have.
- 33:34Speaker 6: Been so sure we went once because it was very
- 33:36Speaker 6: far out of our realm of a form of affordability.
- 33:40Speaker 6: But I don't remember single thing about the show. I
- 33:41Speaker 6: don't remember anything, like I'm probably didn't buy anything the
- 33:44Speaker 6: because we probab couldn't have thord. Just what I remember
- 33:46Speaker 6: is like the way that my parents told me is
- 33:48Speaker 6: that it had like rained that day and there was
- 33:50Speaker 6: a rainbow and they're like, oh, like, let's follow the rainbow,
- 33:52Speaker 6: and somehow they've done, Oh I think the rainbow's going
- 33:55Speaker 6: left when you know whatever, They're like, we're going to
- 34:00Speaker 6: and it was like that's what I remember totally. Other
- 34:03Speaker 6: little experiences that I remember through my childhood were things
- 34:06Speaker 6: like that that were thought like that particular part of
- 34:09Speaker 6: my memory cost them no money, do you know what
- 34:11Speaker 6: I mean? Of course, the fact that Disney on Ice
- 34:13Speaker 6: is charch To, and I know that that's really expensive,
- 34:15Speaker 6: but that is not what I remember.
- 34:17Speaker 5: With you remember how they made that experience magic.
- 34:19Speaker 6: Completely, and I think there's lots of little ways that
- 34:22Speaker 6: you can do that that don't cost you anything. And
- 34:24Speaker 6: I wouldn't undervalue that because like, the way that someone
- 34:27Speaker 6: makes you feel is so much more important than the
- 34:30Speaker 6: monetary value of something. And to flip the narrative, I
- 34:33Speaker 6: think that if you can change your mindset, I think
- 34:36Speaker 6: it would be really helpful because as someone who kind
- 34:39Speaker 6: of is that relative, like for myself and my partner,
- 34:42Speaker 6: for our nieces and nephews, we don't have a house,
- 34:45Speaker 6: we don't have kids, we have no significant financial responsibilities.
- 34:48Speaker 6: I'm say, I'm fine, Auntie, I buy you dumb expensive
- 34:52Speaker 6: things like you something stupid and expensive, Yeah, I'll buy it,
- 34:56Speaker 6: Like Mum and Dad can't justify spending a heap, I
- 34:58Speaker 6: don't think.
- 34:59Speaker 4: I don't think just has ever come to my house,
- 35:01Speaker 4: not with a present for Harvey and I'm like, what
- 35:03Speaker 4: is this? And she's like it was just so cute?
- 35:07Speaker 5: Do you know what I mean?
- 35:07Speaker 6: It's and I think from my perspective, it's coming from
- 35:10Speaker 6: a place of lum it's coming from a place of oh,
- 35:12Speaker 6: well I can do these things, let me do them
- 35:16Speaker 6: so you don't have to. And it would like if
- 35:19Speaker 6: I thought that I was making my brother and sister
- 35:21Speaker 6: in law feel bad. It would break my heart. That's
- 35:23Speaker 6: not the intention at all. So I think I totally
- 35:26Speaker 6: want to validate how you're feeling, because if you want
- 35:29Speaker 6: to be buying those things and you can't afford them,
- 35:32Speaker 6: I get that that sucks. But I think if we
- 35:34Speaker 6: can try and reframe the mindset to be like, how
- 35:36Speaker 6: good that you know my mother in law wants to
- 35:39Speaker 6: buy these things for my kids and can buy these
- 35:41Speaker 6: things for my kids, how can I Like, if you
- 35:44Speaker 6: play with them, Let's say they buy them one of
- 35:46Speaker 6: those really expensive ride on car things. Like that's the
- 35:48Speaker 6: first thing I thought of when I don't know why,
- 35:50Speaker 6: when I heard.
- 35:51Speaker 4: The story Bentley that drives if you ever see Harvey
- 35:55Speaker 4: in one of them, wasn't me?
- 35:56Speaker 5: It's not yeah, not happening, That's what I picched it.
- 35:59Speaker 6: But like, let's say they do that, Like you get
- 36:01Speaker 6: the memories of playing with them, build a racetrack from
- 36:04Speaker 6: cardboard in the backyard and drive them around, and you
- 36:07Speaker 6: can still be a part of that memory even.
- 36:09Speaker 2: If you're so true by it, and like, arguably probably
- 36:12Speaker 2: the most memorable part of that memory is like you
- 36:16Speaker 2: enjoying that with them and not the actual who bought
- 36:18Speaker 2: it for me. You have no You probably like look
- 36:21Speaker 2: back and have no idea where a lot of these
- 36:23Speaker 2: things came from. You just remember the memories, as you
- 36:25Speaker 2: were saying, of experiencing that fun and that playfulness and
- 36:29Speaker 2: that magic with the people that you experienced. Either could
- 36:32Speaker 2: be the parents, could be anyone. Yeah, but the memories
- 36:35Speaker 2: of what really really matter.
- 36:37Speaker 5: Yeah, No, I totally agree with that. And what do
- 36:38Speaker 5: you think?
- 36:39Speaker 4: I guess I'm in this really weird position where this
- 36:42Speaker 4: is like triggered a heap of memories about my childhood
- 36:44Speaker 4: and my birthdays. And when I asked you, like, what
- 36:47Speaker 4: do you remember? I was like, what do I remember?
- 36:50Speaker 4: And I remember that on our birthdays, Mum would still
- 36:53Speaker 4: make us go to school if it was a school day,
- 36:55Speaker 4: but we got to pick what we had for dinner.
- 36:57Speaker 4: So we never went out for dinner, but we got
- 37:00Speaker 4: to pick. And I always remember telling my mum that
- 37:02Speaker 4: I wanted corn beef for dinner because it was my favorite,
- 37:06Speaker 4: but it wasn't. It was my dad's favorite, and I
- 37:08Speaker 4: knew that that's what he would really want. And then
- 37:11Speaker 4: I remember we would always make a cake so and
- 37:14Speaker 4: we got to be in complete control of that cake.
- 37:16Speaker 4: And my sister and I went through this massive phase
- 37:18Speaker 4: of always wanting to make a Mars Bar cheese cake,
- 37:21Speaker 4: and so we would do that, and when we were younger,
- 37:23Speaker 4: Mum would help, and as we got older, we'd like
- 37:25Speaker 4: make it for each other. And that's something that as
- 37:28Speaker 4: I've become a parent, I'm not thinking about the things
- 37:32Speaker 4: that I can buy hervey. In fact, we're really privileged
- 37:35Speaker 4: that we can afford nice gifts. But I really don't
- 37:39Speaker 4: want him to become entitled. I want him to be
- 37:41Speaker 4: grateful for these things. But I hope he grows up
- 37:44Speaker 4: with the same like magic memories, Like I hope that
- 37:47Speaker 4: you know, I can chase a rainbow for him, and
- 37:49Speaker 4: I hope that he gets as excited about going through
- 37:51Speaker 4: the Woman's Weekly Cookbook and picking his birthday cake and
- 37:55Speaker 4: like remembers that that's the effort we put in for him.
- 37:58Speaker 4: Because now I'm an adult, I went out and I
- 38:00Speaker 4: bought the Women's Weekly Cookbook so that he can have
- 38:03Speaker 4: that tradition. So I think it's been as a new parent.
- 38:06Speaker 4: There's been a lot of conversation with my husband around
- 38:09Speaker 4: like how do we make these things special, Like how
- 38:12Speaker 4: now that we're parents, are we celebrating my husband's birthday
- 38:15Speaker 4: because I want Harvey to be part of that, but
- 38:18Speaker 4: I don't want it to be. Okay, Well, on dad's birthday,
- 38:21Speaker 4: we get him a gift and that's it.
- 38:23Speaker 5: So we're implementing the.
- 38:24Speaker 4: Cake thing for everybody. And I think that that's really cute.
- 38:28Speaker 4: But yeah, for me, it's about maybe stepping back and
- 38:31Speaker 4: going Is it because I feel inadequate because I know
- 38:34Speaker 4: I really want to give my kid this thing and
- 38:36Speaker 4: I can't, Or is it because they're taking the limelight?
- 38:40Speaker 5: What's that?
- 38:41Speaker 4: And also what does that limelight look like? Does it
- 38:43Speaker 4: look like they're getting the expensive present on the day
- 38:46Speaker 4: of their birthday and you're feeling a little bit like, oh,
- 38:50Speaker 4: but you've forgotten the week after who gave it to them?
- 38:53Speaker 4: Because they got so many different birthday presents and books
- 38:56Speaker 4: and cars and toys and whatnot. And then next week
- 38:59Speaker 4: they're playing with it. You're enjoying that experience. Maybe we
- 39:01Speaker 4: need to step and do the investing mindset of when
- 39:04Speaker 4: in daubt zoomunt, like what's the bigger picture? What story
- 39:08Speaker 4: and what narrative are we teaching our kids about this,
- 39:11Speaker 4: because if Jess comes over with a present for my
- 39:12Speaker 4: kid and he's not six months old, he's a bit older.
- 39:15Speaker 4: The thing I would want Harvey to get out of
- 39:18Speaker 4: that is gratitude, Like, wow, isn't that so generous of Jess.
- 39:21Speaker 4: Isn't it so nice that she took the time to
- 39:23Speaker 4: go to the shops and think of you and pick
- 39:26Speaker 4: out a present that she thought you would love. And
- 39:30Speaker 4: I just hope that that's what he takes from it,
- 39:32Speaker 4: not like sick I got a car like I just
- 39:35Speaker 4: I wouldn't ever want him to be expectant of those presents.
- 39:39Speaker 5: So just like, wow, that's extra generous of Jess. Jess
- 39:42Speaker 5: must really love you, Like yeah, I.
- 39:44Speaker 4: Hope that that's what he gets from it. But that's me,
- 39:48Speaker 4: you know, wistfully thinking with a six month old, and
- 39:51Speaker 4: maybe when you've got a little five year old who's like, a.
- 39:53Speaker 5: Ha, Jess is the best. You're so silly, mom, Like
- 39:56Speaker 5: I'll have a different opinion, you know, did everyone else
- 39:59Speaker 5: say so?
- 40:00Speaker 4: We asked the community, would it bother you if your
- 40:03Speaker 4: in laws overshadowed your gifts? Forty four percent of you
- 40:06Speaker 4: said yep. I'm a parent, I get that fifty six
- 40:08Speaker 4: percent of you said nut wouldn't bother me. Then we asked,
- 40:12Speaker 4: if this was a problem, would you say something. Fifty
- 40:15Speaker 4: three percent of you said, yep, boundaries are really important.
- 40:17Speaker 4: Forty seven percent of you said, we're avoiding the drama.
- 40:21Speaker 4: We also then said all right, what's your two cents?
- 40:23Speaker 4: And we had a lot of different opinions, which is
- 40:25Speaker 4: not surprising. So the first comment I've pulled out is
- 40:28Speaker 4: I text both families for birthdays and Christmases, and I
- 40:31Speaker 4: just tell them what to buy.
- 40:32Speaker 6: Families probably appreciate that too, Like if someone told me
- 40:35Speaker 6: this is what the kid wants or the kid needs,
- 40:36Speaker 6: I'd be like, great less brain power for me?
- 40:39Speaker 4: Why I always ask So, like I went to I
- 40:42Speaker 4: want to say my nephew's second birthday, but it's my
- 40:45Speaker 4: best friend's son's second birthday on the weekend. I actually
- 40:48Speaker 4: had a really busy weekend, and I text her and said,
- 40:51Speaker 4: what does he need? Like I'd much prefer to buy
- 40:55Speaker 4: something that's constructive, and she was like, oh, your presence
- 40:58Speaker 4: is our present getting the pin Like I want to
- 41:00Speaker 4: this kid something. So I found something that I thought
- 41:03Speaker 4: was going to be constructive. But I'm always asking, And
- 41:05Speaker 4: I think if you're the aunt, like can you just ask, yeah,
- 41:09Speaker 4: what do you need? Like time's are tough, money is tired.
- 41:11Speaker 4: If there's a fifty dollars item that you're willing to buy,
- 41:15Speaker 4: can we make it really constructive? Like they might need
- 41:17Speaker 4: a new backpack for daycare. Oh that would be a
- 41:20Speaker 4: weight off mum and dad's shoulders. And the kid's going
- 41:22Speaker 4: to be stoked that they've got a new backpack, you know, Like, yeah,
- 41:25Speaker 4: make it constructive. The next comment we got was not
- 41:28Speaker 4: all kids value expensive gifts. Get to know your child's
- 41:31Speaker 4: love language. I feel like that's a really good thing
- 41:35Speaker 4: to remember. And again I'm having these conversations with my husband.
- 41:38Speaker 4: I'm like, Harve, you's a legit human, Like, isn't it weird?
- 41:42Speaker 4: Like he's only six months. You can't talk to us yet,
- 41:44Speaker 4: but like he's got thoughts and feelings and he likes
- 41:48Speaker 4: some things and he doesn't like other things, and like
- 41:50Speaker 4: he's not us. So like, what is your kid's love language?
- 41:53Speaker 4: Because some kids would be like, oh my god, how
- 41:56Speaker 4: great is this item? And others would be like I
- 41:59Speaker 4: really wanted to go to the park with you today and.
- 42:01Speaker 5: You just copped out. And got me a bike.
- 42:05Speaker 4: Two other comments, we've got the other end of the spectrum.
- 42:07Speaker 4: My partner's dad doesn't usually buy anything for our kids.
- 42:11Speaker 4: And someone said, take the kids camping, so when you're back,
- 42:14Speaker 4: the birthday is over and.
- 42:15Speaker 5: It's not relevant anymore. All right, take the kids to Meredith.
- 42:22Speaker 5: Someone else said this is me.
- 42:24Speaker 4: I'm the aunt who spoils the kids, and I am
- 42:26Speaker 4: not sorry about it.
- 42:27Speaker 6: Nah, fair enough. It's competition people the best art.
- 42:34Speaker 5: I'm not going to train rival you.
- 42:37Speaker 4: Someone else said presence don't last, but mum's love does, really,
- 42:41Speaker 4: and then there were a couple more so. Someone said,
- 42:43Speaker 4: I believe you can make it super special for kids
- 42:45Speaker 4: without any fancy, expensive gifts. And then the last comment
- 42:48Speaker 4: I'll share is stop comparing yourself. It's not about the
- 42:52Speaker 4: money that your in law is spent. It's actually the
- 42:54Speaker 4: thought that matters, and you can teach your kid that.
- 42:57Speaker 4: So I think that's just coming from a place of love.
- 43:00Speaker 4: And I guess that's where you know. I'm really grateful
- 43:03Speaker 4: that people buy presents for Harvey, but I just I
- 43:06Speaker 4: worry so much about bringing up an entitled kid. I
- 43:10Speaker 4: don't want that, and I just I think it's really
- 43:13Speaker 4: about the values that you instill in your kids. I'm like,
- 43:15Speaker 4: kids aren't going to get it, Like, you know, they're
- 43:18Speaker 4: tiny human beings and they're yeah, okay, cool, but just
- 43:20Speaker 4: gave me hot wheels. Like, but it's that consistent messaging,
- 43:24Speaker 4: and it's the underlying tone of like, Okay, well, let's
- 43:28Speaker 4: thank Jess for that because that was very kind of
- 43:30Speaker 4: Jess and all of those things that you can teach
- 43:32Speaker 4: your kid, because yeah, it's not about the money. No,
- 43:35Speaker 4: I don't remember any of the presents I got as
- 43:37Speaker 4: a kid.
- 43:38Speaker 6: You're entitled to set boundaries if you need to, but
- 43:40Speaker 6: I think that, yeah, reframing the way you look at it,
- 43:42Speaker 6: in my mind, is probably the way to do it. Yeah.
- 43:45Speaker 4: And also like, does it get complicated if you block
- 43:48Speaker 4: them from doing that and then it creates this drama?
- 43:50Speaker 2: Yeah, I be like, oh, I'm anxious now. I don't
- 43:52Speaker 2: know how much. I don't know what what to bring.
- 43:54Speaker 2: I don't know how to even give the child the gifts.
- 43:57Speaker 2: Act really not that excited or act what do I like?
- 44:01Speaker 2: You just analyze yourself so much. If someone's like, hey,
- 44:03Speaker 2: I don't like what you're doing here, it becomes a
- 44:05Speaker 2: it's a whole thing, like I don't know what to
- 44:07Speaker 2: do with my body right now, you know.
- 44:09Speaker 4: Yeah, And they also maybe step into their shoes. Why
- 44:13Speaker 4: are they doing that? Are they the jests of the
- 44:14Speaker 4: family and they want to be the favorite aunt or
- 44:17Speaker 4: are they just.
- 44:18Speaker 5: Like, oh my gosh, Harvey's gonna love.
- 44:21Speaker 4: This, and they just get so excited to do it,
- 44:23Speaker 4: and then it's kind of taking the shine off. I
- 44:25Speaker 4: don't know. I feel like both sides of the spectrum
- 44:28Speaker 4: are valid, but I would step back when in doubt.
- 44:30Speaker 5: Zoom out exactly, good one.
- 44:31Speaker 4: Love it well, guys, it has been a beautiful conversation today.
- 44:35Speaker 4: Thank you for joining me for another Friday drinks. I've
