- 0:00Doing Marriage Well for June 25, 2026 The Science of Wedded Bliss What the Data Says About Generosity,
- 0:08Would proof that generosity is good for your marriage encourage you to be more
- 0:11generous? If so, this podcast is for you.
- 0:14The survey of marital generosity talked to 1,365 couples.
- 0:19They found that generosity was positively associated with marital satisfaction
- 0:23and negatively associated with marital conflict and a perceived likelihood of divorce.
- 0:27The study defined generosity as small acts of kindness, displays of respect
- 0:31and affection, and a willingness to forgive one's spouse his or her faults.
- 0:35The study, When Baby Makes Three, the 2011 State of Our Unions,
- 0:39a report from the National Marriage Project, went further.
- 0:42The author of the study said, Generosity is an important and sometimes overlooked
- 0:46dimension of marriage and family life.
- 0:48Generosity was defined as the virtue of giving good things freely and abundantly,
- 0:53and was played out in four specific ways.
- 0:56Small acts of service, the expression of affection, displays of respect,
- 1:00and a willingness to forgive mistakes and failings.
- 1:03The study listed generosity as the third most important predictor in its top
- 1:07five predictors of marital happiness.
- 1:09In marriages where generosity was below average, only 14% of husbands and wives
- 1:14said they were very happy in their marriage.
- 1:16In marriages where generosity was above average, 46% of husbands and 50% of
- 1:21wives said they were very happy in their marriage.
- 1:23Yet another study found that religiosity is positively associated with marital
- 1:27generosity. So those who follow Jesus have a leg up on this.
- 1:31The same study determined that the most potent predictor of generosity was spouses
- 1:35personally dedicated to their partner and to continuing the relationship.
- 1:39These reports suggest to me that a solid path to wedded bliss may be found by
- 1:42embracing an ethic of generosity that encompasses a spirit of service,
- 1:46frequent displays of affection, and a willingness to forgive the faults and
- 1:49failings of one's spouse.
- 1:51To get started, pick one of the study's four pillars, an act of service,
- 1:55an expression of affection, a display of respect, or letting a minor mistake
- 1:58go, and do it before the sun goes down.
- 2:01This is Paul, and the data shows generosity is at the heart of doing marriage well.
