Transcript
- 0:02Yeah, lace them up another way. Another easy double yeah, from
- 0:15the track to the rodeo we talk that talk splits on the watch,
- 0:18but we still take the Mick Dean and Per for the long run.
- 0:20Legs go and break the fire when the session gets thick.
- 0:23Ryan in the mix with the numbers and plans from Everson to medals
- 0:26yeah, we break it all down hard graft Monday left about a Sunday
- 0:29still chasing peeves while the world spins round.
- 0:31Miles in the bank. Heart rate low big dreams, but
- 0:34we take it slow. If you know, then you know the.
- 0:38Hello and welcome back to the Easy Double Podcast London
- 0:41Calling series. My name is Ryan and I am honored
- 0:44to be joined by three of the fastest men who'll be stood on
- 0:47the start line in London Marathon this year as Tim
- 0:51Vincent, the 209 guy, Jake Smith 211, and Jake Barraclough, 240.
- 0:57I was thinking before when I was kind of like putting some notes
- 1:00together for this. There must be, but is there
- 1:05three faster marathoners who've been on one podcast at one time
- 1:09before? We've got an average of 24, 211.
- 1:14That's a good question. It depends.
- 1:16If team has been on a podcast with two others.
- 1:20But it also depends on how many. Like you need a minimum average
- 1:24for as well because you could get 2 or and maybe.
- 1:27That'll do it. 3 plus. Three plus I reckon.
- 1:30This could be Rory, Rory Linklater and Jacob Thompson.
- 1:35They'd go, what, 208 or something.
- 1:37But then there's only two, I think.
- 1:38Yeah, you've got to be 3, three or more, surely.
- 1:44Because there was 1 back in the day, Phil Sussman done one with
- 1:46Mark Scott and I can't remember who hosted it, but Mark hadn't
- 1:50made his debut by then either. So it's a bit of a niche.
- 1:55We'll claim it. Yeah, we'll take it.
- 2:02Welcome to the show anyway, fellas, I was going to start
- 2:04with the accountability actions that we kind of discussed at the
- 2:08end of last week's, the other week's show.
- 2:11How have we been getting on? I might even jump in and see if
- 2:15I can. You guys can police me.
- 2:17Was mine my hip mobility? Yeah, yes.
- 2:21Wait, no, that's I've. I've been good at that.
- 2:23I probably dropped off a little bit but was gone three to four
- 2:26days a week and probably need a pickup since the weekend.
- 2:30You did say there was maybe another one, but you couldn't
- 2:33think at the time. It hasn't came back to you.
- 2:37It did get this, so it did the next day when I was out doing my
- 2:40marathon session and I can't think of it now.
- 2:46Why is it that when you're out running, just all these crazy
- 2:49thoughts come to you? Like you could solve the world's
- 2:51problems on a run, couldn't you? I call it, but it's like those
- 2:55share with thoughts that people have.
- 2:57That's how I refer to it. Like I planned my day and
- 3:00everything. I don't know if the Jakes are
- 3:01the same, but I when I don't run, I'd have no organization or
- 3:06anything in my life. Yeah, yeah, It all falls apart.
- 3:10Running's the glue, but I'm even, I'm like that way.
- 3:12I'll have to bring my, well, I have my phone usually for music,
- 3:15and then I'll pull it out to jot something down because I know
- 3:18otherwise by the time I get home I've forgotten it.
- 3:20That would be some video idea or something like that.
- 3:23It's like, you know, yeah, mid run you get the best thoughts.
- 3:26But then I'm like typing away as I'm jogging along.
- 3:28Like, yeah, this is a banger. I can't forget this.
- 3:33Yeah, well, me. Yeah.
- 3:34Do you do much when you run a bit like organizing and things
- 3:37I. Don't.
- 3:41I don't really know. I just think about what I'm
- 3:44going to get from the bakery afterwards.
- 3:49Valid. I don't really, I'm not like the
- 3:53smartest. I wouldn't say, well, I did OK
- 3:56at school and stuff so I don't really think about much.
- 4:00But then it's weird because then when I go for running, like if I
- 4:02meet you in London, I won't stop talking that that's it's so
- 4:06weird way to be random things. You can show us where all the
- 4:09good bakeries are. No, I don't know anything in
- 4:12London. It's a sweet day to drive.
- 4:16You know, unlike the meta glasses now where you get like
- 4:19the data visual on the screen, like heart rate, pace, distance
- 4:23or whatever. I'm just picturing that's like
- 4:25exactly what is in your mind, Jake, on any run.
- 4:29I thought, well, other Jake would get Would you ever get
- 4:33those glasses for your? Racing.
- 4:37Yeah. I was thinking about that
- 4:41because it's much easier than one of the little head Cam.
- 4:43Yeah, I feel like I'm in their life.
- 4:45But they do bounce a little. Whereas I think I saw the
- 4:48Clayton Young, he wore them in a race and yeah, I can't remember
- 4:53which race it was, but no, I'm tempted.
- 4:56They should hook me up. Little sponsorship.
- 4:58We could. We could make something happen.
- 5:02Still business. If not, you'll be able to
- 5:04expense them on the run to Japan business account anyway.
- 5:08That's my entire life. So actually I literally just
- 5:11filed taxes recently, a couple weeks ago.
- 5:14Literally everything. Basically it's food, the travel,
- 5:18the racing. I realise I do nothing outside
- 5:21of the sort of run to Japan like cover.
- 5:25It's great though, for yeah tax season.
- 5:29What about your twos accountability actions?
- 5:32Jake Smith? Yours was not too down the
- 5:35chocolate share packs every night.
- 5:37Yes, I've, I've hated it. I'm onto the Yoghurts and the
- 5:44stroopwafels yet from Netherlands, but three times a
- 5:49week I'm still having a pot of Haagen Dazs just because I'm
- 5:52not, I'm not stopping that. But yeah, like, like I said, you
- 5:57know about like I'm only weighing myself once every time
- 6:01I'm back home. And I'm trying to, because
- 6:03because of my history, I, I would lose weight too quickly.
- 6:07Whereas it's like some trying to do it.
- 6:08And I'm speaking to like my coach about it, the team about
- 6:11it. I've lost.
- 6:12It was like 0.8 kilos in 2 1/2 weeks, which I think is a very,
- 6:17very healthy amount. But the first week after taking
- 6:22out those short oranges, it wasn't very nice.
- 6:23It was a bit, it was a bit rubbish to be honest.
- 6:26And when you get first gets yogurts, you forget like how
- 6:29they're all right, but they're just, they're just not really
- 6:32dessert for myself anyway. But it's it's going all right.
- 6:37It's going all right. And lastly, Jake Barclough,
- 6:43yours was the sauna and yeah, I see you're not sat and you saw
- 6:46an attempt right now. I'm glad you put it out what it
- 6:50was, because the whole time I was trying to think what was my
- 6:53accountability action? I had no idea what I'd said.
- 6:58How's the sauna been? I feel like I've hit it a few
- 7:01times. Yeah, I've hit a few little
- 7:03sauna sessions. I'm actually, I feel like I'm
- 7:06starting to kind of enjoy it at the start.
- 7:08I hated it. I don't know if it's just it's
- 7:10so cold. It's been like minus something
- 7:12out here, it's actually quite a nice like get back from a run,
- 7:16bang the sauna straight on, jump in there, do a bit of yeah, like
- 7:21I'll eat in it. I watch watch them YouTube.
- 7:24It's great. So yeah, I feel like I've been,
- 7:27I've been on that. Is there any sort of like time
- 7:32cap that you're trying to do or just till you get bored?
- 7:36I usually go half an hour usually just because, because
- 7:40it's so cheap. It's like literally the most
- 7:43sort of budget. Literally.
- 7:44Yeah. Well, it's a tent, isn't it?
- 7:46It takes about half an hour to warm up, and the longest you can
- 7:50run it for is an hour. So pretty much by the time it's
- 7:54warmed up, I jump in. Gives me half an hour and that's
- 7:57enough to get a pretty good sweat on.
- 8:01Tim, you would have maybe been exposed to sauna and as like
- 8:04more of a scientific way of doing it in like Falls Creek, it
- 8:08seems like everyone hammers it whilst they're up there.
- 8:12You'd think that we just literally finish around and go
- 8:15and sit in there and I can't think of a better way to say it.
- 8:19Excuse me? Language chat shit.
- 8:20It is literally nothing more scientific than that, so maybe
- 8:24it should be. I think a lot of us just try and
- 8:28do 20 minutes if we can and if we feel too cooked we get out.
- 8:34And maybe for the listeners perspective who might be
- 8:38thinking why on earth elite athletes sitting in a sauna, is
- 8:41it like it's red blood cell production, isn't it?
- 8:43It just kind of helps with that, a bit of a top up.
- 8:46Some blood plasma I believe is more heat.
- 8:51Could be wrong and then usually it's something I'd probably do
- 8:55if I was going to a warmer climate than what I was training
- 8:59in. Two weeks.
- 9:01Well, we'll stay with Tim Vincent because this weekend
- 9:05he's just raced 1/2 marathon over in Belgium, I believe at
- 9:08Bashir's Run and ran a PB. I won't steal your Thunder.
- 9:13So yeah, I guess over to you, Tim, Kind of.
- 9:16Tell us how you trained up towards it.
- 9:19Did you tape her? Did you do any specific half
- 9:21sessions or was it just part of your full block?
- 9:24And the lads feel free to pick his brains because you're more
- 9:28accredited than I. The craziest thing I'd say to
- 9:33start with is like, I did nothing different.
- 9:36If anything, my preparation I'd say was probably better for
- 9:40marigami. And maybe in a sense, like part
- 9:43of my reflection so far is like, these things maybe happen on the
- 9:47day where you don't plan them or don't try as hard or put less
- 9:52pressure on. I could probably pick two or
- 9:55three times in the last year where I thought, you know, it
- 9:58might happen there and it didn't.
- 10:02So yeah, good learning curve. And I'm to be honest, I actually
- 10:05really don't care about the time.
- 10:06I'm more just happy to be going in the right direction again
- 10:08because I felt for a few months that it was weird, couldn't put
- 10:12my finger on it, but it just wasn't clicking.
- 10:14So yeah, kind of glad to just be out of that.
- 10:17It's, it's great that that because you were kind of
- 10:19speaking last week about maybe being a little bit unsure of
- 10:22where training was at and stuff, especially with the shorter
- 10:26stuff and like the kind of the top end of marathon pace and now
- 10:30running that run. I guess that leaves you sitting
- 10:32in a lot better place confidence wise to go and attack the rest
- 10:36of the block. Absolutely.
- 10:38It's I've had that thought myself and it's probably exactly
- 10:42what I needed. Like it's always nice to know
- 10:44the legs can move that quick. And now, for example, with the
- 10:49marathon, it's like, OK, can I, can I go the distance?
- 10:53And yeah, I've got plenty of work to do because I actually
- 10:56haven't done a whole lot of marathon stuff yet.
- 10:59But yeah, I'm much happier of I guess where I'm sitting or just
- 11:05having that result. It'll do my confidence of what a
- 11:08good. You were saying offline you kind
- 11:10of went into a little bit blind, like just went run to fail for a
- 11:13long way. That was the plan, always.
- 11:16Yeah, this is an interesting one.
- 11:18Like I'm big on running to fail and my last few races, like we'd
- 11:22been going to like I usually go fail and then what your
- 11:26trainings kind of indicating. And we'd gone more towards like
- 11:30probably where what should have been, if that makes sense, Like
- 11:33what indicated what I could run and just get in every race and
- 11:38it just folded pieces, but we couldn't put a finger on it.
- 11:42So this one we actually went the opposite way and said, you know,
- 11:46there's 61 pesos 6130 and there was nothing after that.
- 11:51And I would have probably liked a 6230 or even touched slower
- 11:56given my racing results. So just kind of like ran to
- 12:00feel. I knew 10 minutes in I could
- 12:04picture my coach because I was like look, I haven't got this
- 12:06wrong because I'm running to feel, but if I don't finish at
- 12:09this pace, I'm going to get abused because I've gone out and
- 12:12done everything I said I wouldn't do.
- 12:14And I knew the split to the 1st 10 minutes in particular, I knew
- 12:19it was pretty much that low two 50s were the same as Murugami
- 12:22and whatnot. So if it fell apart, I would
- 12:25have, yeah, I'm, I can laugh at it now.
- 12:29But yeah, it's just so weird how on some days, like we probably
- 12:33could have talked out there, like the sensation and rate of
- 12:36perceived exertion was so low that day, completely different
- 12:40day, just like already out of breath.
- 12:42So yeah, a lot of learning out of that.
- 12:49A lot of the time when people race in the marathon blocks,
- 12:52they use it as like a bit of a simulation in terms of like
- 12:56doing all the race care, doing like a bit of a mini car bloat
- 12:59and almost pretending like it's marathon day was.
- 13:02Did that form any part of it? I took the exact opposite
- 13:06approach, like I'm usually trying to be pretty regulated in
- 13:10that sense and this one is probably the smallest taper of
- 13:14done. I think we still ran 150K
- 13:17including the race. I think I had a kebab for lunch
- 13:21the day before, which I'd never do.
- 13:25Yeah, I was just like really relaxed and obviously cared and
- 13:28was going to run as hard as I could.
- 13:30But maybe those things like in reflection, like just allow me
- 13:35to be me and take a bit of the pressure off.
- 13:40You're going to do that before London now?
- 13:41A kebab the day before. I'd love to, Jake.
- 13:45Don't tell me. Maybe we go for a kebab after.
- 13:48But look if they assume maybe meals are at the hotel or
- 13:53whatnot. I don't actually.
- 13:54Know, but maybe I maybe I asked for a kebab.
- 14:02Well, yeah, 6117 was the result. So congratulations, put your
- 14:06number 13 on the Aussie all time list.
- 14:08Does that kind of change perspective or anything going
- 14:11into the rest of the block or you're just going to carry on
- 14:14doing what you were doing with a bit more confidence?
- 14:17I think I'll definitely take a lot of confidence out of it.
- 14:21I do see with the shoes and stuff we have access to now that
- 14:26I see the half and the marathon, there's pretty different events.
- 14:31Like I think the shoes actually do cushion the half in a sense.
- 14:36Like you can actually really get away in 1/2 I think with not as
- 14:39much conditioning as what we used to have to have.
- 14:43So that'll be a big focus for me now is like, cool, the leg
- 14:46speed's probably in a better spot than I thought it was on on
- 14:50my best day. And then just got to try and in
- 14:53order to, you know, bite off a bit more and have a good run,
- 14:57got to be able to go the distance.
- 14:59The new R6 kit is nice by the way as well, isn't?
- 15:03It I like the little tinge of green and we've been trying to
- 15:06work out whether it's clouds or cherry blossoms for Tokyo
- 15:09Marathon. There's a little pattern down
- 15:11the bottom, the colours are nice and there's a little, yeah, I
- 15:15guess intricate pattern that most of the photos won't pick
- 15:18up. And the arm sleeves are pretty
- 15:20nice too. And all the travel over there
- 15:24went smoothly. Did you fly just like an hour or
- 15:27so? Is it to Belgium?
- 15:29Yeah, the travel was pretty good.
- 15:30This is the other thing that might have helped me relax is it
- 15:32was all the day before. I'd typically get in maybe 2
- 15:37days earlier or for a marathon even possibly earlier.
- 15:41And then obviously if it's across the other side of the
- 15:44world, it'd be a week. So this was like day before.
- 15:46Got in there at, I want to say like 4:00 PM.
- 15:49Went and had a dinner with everyone straight to bed and it
- 15:53was almost like there was actual no downtime to do anything.
- 15:57You just kind of. It was just one big process.
- 16:01I've really enjoyed that as well.
- 16:03Yeah, nice. And I guess just to touch on
- 16:06your Countrymen teammate Liam was up, Liam Bootham was also
- 16:10there and also run very fast time 61 low is he was obviously
- 16:14buzzing with that too. He was pretty happy with his
- 16:18run. I won't speak too much on his
- 16:20behalf, but like we're both a little bit frustrated at the end
- 16:24of the brace. Like it was slightly long and we
- 16:27weren't able to kick. Just the way the course was set
- 16:29up. Like we actually didn't know
- 16:30we'd already finished and a few of the manual K markers were
- 16:35just out. So we were probably thinking we
- 16:38were already up to 800 metres. You get what I'm saying?
- 16:43Yeah, we were probably about 800 metres out in what we thought we
- 16:46were at. So both of us, like I'm done,
- 16:50very happy, big PB and whatnot, but we've probably both got a
- 16:53bit more time to go on a nicer course and obviously another
- 16:58barrier being 61 dead maybe on a different day that's probably
- 17:02lingering in both our minds. Yeah, that's frustrating, isn't
- 17:07it? How's that ended up happening?
- 17:08Is it like official measured course and what athletic
- 17:12certified and all this Well? Yeah, I think it's a new course
- 17:16this year. So the path usually follows this
- 17:19river. I'll use that term loosely.
- 17:21I actually, I don't know a different word for it.
- 17:24It's very, we'll call it a river, but there's a path, full
- 17:27path beside it. I think they said there's a new
- 17:30bridge going in or some work. So this year instead kind of had
- 17:34some cobble cobbles and just 90° turns about the same distance,
- 17:39but it just didn't go anywhere near this long straight path,
- 17:42which was a traditional course. They must have got the measuring
- 17:47wrong or didn't account for something.
- 17:49And it turned out that the finish was actually at the start
- 17:53of when we entered the track, not the full way round on the
- 17:56other side. So everyone's gearing up to go,
- 17:59but you've already finished. Does that mean when you finished
- 18:02the right, did you surely the time on the clock saying what 62
- 18:07or 63 did you realize? That it?
- 18:10Well, I was still happy. Yeah, it's funny, Jake, because
- 18:15I was like when I crossed it was 6149 and I've still got my watch
- 18:19on 7K splits. It's a weird thing I do, but
- 18:22that's what my watch splits on 7 KS.
- 18:25So I was getting them during the race and I saw 6149 at the end
- 18:30and I was like, boy, like my garments lied to me so bad this
- 18:33morning. I thought I was properly on.
- 18:36Like I just thought I'd lost. Yeah, a few 100 meters.
- 18:39Like I couldn't put it together, but once again, it still would
- 18:42have been a PB. So I was like, whatever.
- 18:44And then yeah, that kind of moved it back a bit.
- 18:47They had us. They actually had it like a mat
- 18:50and it was timed so they knew, but they just didn't tell us
- 18:54because I think they wanted the photos and all about it the
- 18:57other spot. Did you do any like kind of half
- 18:59specific sessions in the couple of weeks prior or is it all just
- 19:03been kind of like normal marathon training?
- 19:06I didn't, but I can talk you through it.
- 19:08You could almost argue in a sense that they're like relevant
- 19:12to the half, but probably not specific.
- 19:14So the last two weeks before on a Tuesday did 8 by Kay.
- 19:18First one would have been in Brisbane and it was the nicest
- 19:23one we did in ages because the weather was horrible and we had
- 19:25a marathon session Friday. So I think we sat at 250 fives
- 19:30most of the morning to 53, which was like a little bit not a cop
- 19:35out, but we really kind of took it quite nice.
- 19:38That's on a track too. Then Friday, so week out 6 by 3K
- 19:47with two-minute jog. I averaged I think 3 wells for
- 19:53the whole morning and I was running probably 3 O sevens for
- 19:56my 3 KS. Once again, a bit warmer in
- 20:00Brisbane but I ran to effort and that's kind of me and my coach
- 20:04thought that was probably. Marathon effort for Brisbane, if
- 20:08that makes sense. Like if we were to run this race
- 20:10in how many weeks time in those conditions in Brisbane, That's
- 20:13probably where I'm at. So over the next few weeks I've
- 20:16got to learn what that pace is in this climate.
- 20:20And then just 8 by K at Saint Mary's on nose track.
- 20:25I don't even know what we ran. 2250 twos probably the Tuesday
- 20:29before and then 10 minute tempo on Friday.
- 20:34Nice. When you talk about coach,
- 20:36you're referring to Nick, Nick Pedos.
- 20:39He's he's sat in all your training and stuff.
- 20:42I'm still coached by Jackson Elliott down at Gold Coast Run
- 20:45Co and just managed by Nick and Collis at Melbourne Track Club.
- 20:50OK. Will.
- 20:52Do you have much of an insight into how the rest of your block
- 20:56will differ compared to like a typical MTC type block?
- 21:01If you know it's kind of quite well known with the six by
- 21:04three, K4 by 5K, how they press that.
- 21:08Will yours be similar or not? I assume it'll be pretty similar
- 21:12because it'd be like Liam and I are very lucky to have each
- 21:15other in this setting in that sense, so may as well use each
- 21:18other for training. So we'll we'll probably end up
- 21:22doing the same workouts I guess. I actually don't even know what
- 21:25we're doing tomorrow, so I really keep it quite loosey
- 21:29goosey and I'll just go with the flow.
- 21:32But yeah, I actually think that'll probably be tomorrow
- 21:35will coming up something like 5 by 4K.
- 21:40You think you might have A5 by 4K tomorrow?
- 21:42That's classed as if it's just nothing.
- 21:45To be honest, I run them to effort though.
- 21:47Like I, it's, it's really interesting.
- 21:49You could talk all day about this stuff.
- 21:51Like I maybe I don't train my marathon sessions hard enough,
- 21:56but I kind of run each of them to how I'm feeling out at that
- 22:01point in time. If I had to run a marathon then
- 22:03and there, and usually that means it's a fair few seconds
- 22:07slower than actual race pace. Yeah, it was probably the smart
- 22:11way too. And this wasn't even pun
- 22:13intended. I just seen Jake's faces are
- 22:15saying the smart way to train. Yeah, I just found it probably
- 22:20better and yeah, it's anyway. So I always blow up if I just
- 22:26chase race pace or bit faster most of the time.
- 22:28So I just pull it back a bit. It's funny, yeah, you said that.
- 22:32I was thinking the exact same when like for example, when you
- 22:35ran your PB, that's what, like 3 O 4K?
- 22:39What in training then? So you never did like, you know,
- 22:43the classic sustained reps, I don't know, 3 by 8K3 by 10K,
- 22:47something like that. You wouldn't ever have actually
- 22:50hit that three O 4K during training.
- 22:53Not not for more than a few K at a time.
- 22:57I think the best session I did from memory before that, which
- 23:02was don't get me wrong, this they're not all like this like
- 23:04this was probably if anything overtraining.
- 23:06I think I did something like 4 by 3K but after the 3K went
- 23:11straight into 1K hard. So they're almost 4K reps and I
- 23:15think those were like 30 fives and then the 1K was like 254 and
- 23:19then AK float between that. Everything else would have been
- 23:22like three 10s for longer sustained durations.
- 23:27Impressive. Big No.
- 23:29Thank you. Yeah, huge.
- 23:33And I guess lastly, you've travelled across the world in
- 23:37between the last two episodes. So how?
- 23:39How did that all go? Oh yeah.
- 23:43I probably haven't even mentioned that.
- 23:44So we were the last Qatar Airways flight to London.
- 23:49We only had a one hour stop because we were late getting in
- 23:52there and we had that Starlink Wi-Fi.
- 23:54So we had our phones up and watching YouTube and whatever
- 23:57watching ran to Japan. And then, yeah, we see all the
- 24:02news pop up about the airspace closure closure.
- 24:05So we just got out and we got caught in there or didn't get
- 24:09through it all. So very lucky it's worked out
- 24:12for us. And then I pulled up all right
- 24:14on the other side. But yeah, might have to go home
- 24:18through Vancouver. We'll worry about that later.
- 24:23Yeah, that's very well timed then, isn't it?
- 24:25And the jet lag wasn't so bad. I find coming over really good.
- 24:29I pull up horribly when I go back, but I'm also less
- 24:33concerned about that. And I think I take not as good
- 24:36care of myself because I've usually just raced.
- 24:39I might have a beer or two and then I'm just like, I know I
- 24:43don't have to race, if that make makes any sense.
- 24:46So I think it's a combination of both of that.
- 24:50But yeah, I usually am worse on the way back.
- 24:54Yeah, all the marginal things are out the window on the way
- 24:56back. Absolutely.
- 24:58Yeah, all. Right Jake Barclough, Tokyo
- 25:01Marathon What, two weeks on Sunday ago?
- 25:05Was it one week on Sunday ago? Two weeks and Sunday was about
- 25:1010 days ago. Yeah, it was like a while back.
- 25:15Yeah, so I mean, I guess everyone largely would have
- 25:19followed your journey and seen you the light.
- 25:22You've done a live stream for anyone who doesn't know, like
- 25:25almost the day before live stream the day after.
- 25:28So unreal coverage like the content that goes out on YouTube
- 25:33is good enough as it is, let alone like literally following
- 25:36your life live during race weekend.
- 25:38And for anyone who has been living under a rock, yeah, he
- 25:44was teasing us whether he would make the start line or not.
- 25:46And we didn't push him for an answer.
- 25:49But yeah, give us give us a rundown of the weekend, Jake.
- 25:53Yeah, I feel like actually when we recorded, I think that was
- 25:56when I was on training camp, but hadn't ran a step since getting
- 26:01there. So I can't, I don't think I
- 26:03mentioned it in the podcast. There's a trouble with having to
- 26:06save things for the YouTube. It's like almost.
- 26:08I don't want to give away too much, just spoil whatever the
- 26:12video is coming up. Yeah, I was pretty much, I think
- 26:17almost when we were actually recording last time.
- 26:20I say I was like 99% sure I wasn't running because I hadn't
- 26:24ran a step. I was still in pain just walking
- 26:26about. And then, yeah, sort of my knee
- 26:30came good, like just before the race.
- 26:35I mean by good. It was like I could manage.
- 26:37I think I managed a 10K jog. So that was the longest I ran in
- 26:39two weeks before Tokyo, and it was like I wasn't in pain then.
- 26:45So I kind of thought I'll basically start the race.
- 26:48And yeah, I've gone into all the detail on these live streams.
- 26:50I won't go too much, but basically, yeah, I'll start the
- 26:53race, use it as effectively like a training stimulus.
- 26:58And to me, it's like, I think I've always thought this, that
- 27:02if I'm racing like a target race, a bit different, if it's
- 27:05like one of those local races, I'm using it as like a hard 40
- 27:09KFL FA, like 42 K effort. But for something like Tokyo, if
- 27:13I build it up, there's a big effort, whether I run, yeah,
- 27:172:15 or drop out or run three hours.
- 27:22Those to me are exactly the same.
- 27:24Like it's literally the identical same time.
- 27:28I know like some of you won't be able to understand that, but
- 27:30just the, my mindset is that I'm running for PB, I'm running to
- 27:35PB, whatever. So I'm going to go out at that
- 27:37pace until I physically can't. So it's like coming into this
- 27:40race, I had no expectation that I'd be at a finish.
- 27:44I was thinking maybe I'll get to like 10K, even 20K because I've
- 27:48done even just like a few reps like the day before, few days
- 27:52before, couple strides and I was like flat out striding at sort
- 27:56of 310 AK. It was genuinely flat out like
- 28:00100 metres. It's like, yeah, my body just
- 28:03doesn't do well with a sort of sudden two week down period.
- 28:07So then you end up just committing to it.
- 28:10And I actually felt a lot better than I expected.
- 28:13And yeah, went through halfway and I was, it was our quickest,
- 28:16yeah, half split ever in American.
- 28:18Like 65 low had been on like 208 pace for the 1st 10K.
- 28:24The classic Japanese style. Got anything done at that?
- 28:27And K split by the way when you see this.
- 28:31Almost out five Ki was thinking I'm not going to make the 10K.
- 28:36So when it came, I was more just surprised that I hadn't
- 28:40completely like completely obliterated by then.
- 28:44So it was it was more just I was like, OK, just get to the next
- 28:475K next 5K next. Like it was more like, yeah,
- 28:49just hang in this group I'm in for as long as possible.
- 28:52The pace you just meant to it like I kind of I go back and
- 28:57forward thinking. Oh, it's genius because like
- 29:00they just have like the biggest bulls.
- 29:03The Japanese guys, they do it every race.
- 29:05Like so many guys will just completely bomb out.
- 29:08But then it's like that one race that they nail, that's when they
- 29:12actually smash their PB and I kind of see it's like if you
- 29:15have your day, it's really like what Tim was saying where your
- 29:18fitness probably hasn't changed from Maragami to the recent
- 29:22half. It like it's so close together
- 29:24but you can run what, 2 minute difference over the same
- 29:28distance effectively you're the same shape.
- 29:31Just like when you have one of those days.
- 29:33I guess it's a bit like that with the marathon where you just
- 29:36they commit to it completely. I thought might as well go with
- 29:38this and just see what happens. Any point?
- 29:43Did you have like a fleeting thought?
- 29:45Like, shit, I actually could be on here.
- 29:48Or was it always like kind of slowly, the effort rising too
- 29:52quickly? I'd say at no point during that
- 29:57race did I think I was going to finish almost.
- 30:00That was, I think because less so like aerobically actually, it
- 30:07was that promising aerobically how good it felt.
- 30:10It was more just like mechanically I was so tight like
- 30:16yeah, because you when you go from just doing nothing to
- 30:19suddenly absolutely ripping. Like yeah, if it had been two
- 30:24weeks inside ran under 430 AK bar a couple strides pre race.
- 30:30And then it was more just every little everything else, like bar
- 30:35the knee. The knee was surprisingly good,
- 30:36but then every other part of my body was just killing me.
- 30:41I guess for us on the outside looking in, it's easier to look
- 30:45at it objectively with no emotion because you're you're
- 30:48the athlete, it's your train and it's your race.
- 30:50So you have all this emotion attached to it.
- 30:53So that may be why people can look at it and be like, well,
- 30:58it's no surprise you're still able to run quite fast for 30K
- 31:01because you had banked all this training prior.
- 31:04But obviously in your mind you've got like you ever shit,
- 31:07my knees been killing. I haven't been able to run.
- 31:10So that's kind of why you've taken the positive spin from it.
- 31:13Like it's actually a decent results and you're gonna well,
- 31:17you tell me how you feel. And now to for the rest of the
- 31:19bill. Yeah, this is 2 parts.
- 31:22It was like 1. I was thinking there's a very
- 31:26good chance I had to pull out early because my knee starts
- 31:28hurting because even I think 3 days or four days before, I was
- 31:32still getting pain on like a 5K jog.
- 31:35So that was the biggest thing in my head.
- 31:37I was like, there's a very good chance I get 2K into this and
- 31:41like I've not tested it at that pace at all and I'm going to
- 31:44have to pull the plug there. And that was obviously a danger,
- 31:47but I was like, yeah, if it hurts at all, I'm.
- 31:49I'm calling it. So that was like a big positive.
- 31:51But then also like, I don't know, there must be some genetic
- 31:57thing involved where I've always found if I take time off, I am
- 32:02just genuinely useless coming back.
- 32:04I know some people can sort of bounce back straight back in,
- 32:07but I've always been that way where my body just completely
- 32:11shuts down. Like yeah, I feel like I can put
- 32:15on about 5 KG in a week. Like I've done it before, like
- 32:18just from eating normally, but just when I stop running, it's
- 32:22like my body just yeah, it's like, right, we're done.
- 32:24So I think, yeah, for me it was like overall a very positive
- 32:28that like I gained a lot of confidence knowing that, yeah,
- 32:32it was hard, but it didn't feel impossible going at that through
- 32:36halfway at 210 phase, which is something I've never attempted
- 32:40before really. And like, yeah.
- 32:43So to me it's like, OK, it gives promise that in the future
- 32:47there's definitely something that is doable.
- 32:51And you're largely like run off, fail and RPE.
- 32:56But do you have any sort of inclination as to like if you've
- 32:59got, do you wear a heart rate monitor for one?
- 33:01And if you do, if you like glance at your watch and see X
- 33:05heart rate 180 or 185. But like that might be a red
- 33:09flag. Or do you not really relate to?
- 33:13No, it could say 200 and it wouldn't affect that.
- 33:17To be fair, I felt like before at the end of Tokyo or it was
- 33:21Gold Coast, maybe I was 200 for the last like 8K or something
- 33:27like it's sickeningly high. So I don't really pay attention
- 33:29because I'm not I don't wear arm the armband anyway, so I just
- 33:34I've got the wrist on and I'll check it post race because
- 33:37that's instinct. It's like you can kind of
- 33:39compare it after, but during it is purely just feel, instinct,
- 33:43that kind of thing. So the Dan Nash approach, does
- 33:48that grind your gears? Yeah, he's the complete polar
- 33:53opposite. No, but that's not, it's funny
- 33:55because it's like we could not be training more different.
- 33:58But I love his podcast still. OK, lastly, how how you feel and
- 34:03then now how did you pull off did the knees OK and stuff?
- 34:08Yeah, yeah, yeah. Knees been good since I took a
- 34:11bit of an easier week. I'm trying to just reset my back
- 34:15at the moment. I've had like this crazy
- 34:17imbalance for ages, sort of stiffness in my backs.
- 34:21Use it a little downtime to try and like less KS than that to
- 34:25try and sort of research. I think it's so hard when I'm
- 34:27actually hammering it to try and correct stuff like that, all the
- 34:31mechanics and things, because you're just actually pounding
- 34:33like the mileage every day. Whereas I kind of used, yeah,
- 34:37there was no pain, but just I was a little tired after
- 34:40obviously. So then took a bit of a chill
- 34:42week to sort of, yeah, reset hopefully smashing these
- 34:46exercises trying to, because the moment I've got this massive
- 34:49imbalance left and right side, I'm just trying to fix that.
- 34:52And yeah, at the moment I'm running it running a little
- 34:54wonky. I went and looked on you Strava
- 34:58before ahead of this and noticed it's gone dark for the past week
- 35:03or so. So I mean, I assume we're not
- 35:06going to find out the answer as to as to why on here and we'll
- 35:09have to wait for the weekend video.
- 35:12You got away for the weekend vid I'm afraid.
- 35:14I hate to do it, but it would be absolutely rookie marketing
- 35:19there to go and and spoil such a banger of a vid.
- 35:22When's this coming up, by the way?
- 35:2524 hours maybe? All right, there we go.
- 35:29Anyone listening, stay tuned. Sunday's video.
- 35:32It's a banger. It's a game changer.
- 35:36But yeah, the people are getting anxious in the comments.
- 35:39They think they're worried that you're injured, but you can
- 35:41confirm you're not injured. I know I've seen the the current
- 35:45start flooding it. It took about one day only.
- 35:48It was, I think it was one day no activity and I had maybe 3 or
- 35:524 ready being like what's happened?
- 35:54Where are you? What what you're doing?
- 35:56It's like you can't fly under the radar on there's people on
- 36:01it. One other thing, by the way,
- 36:05those live streams, they're wild like the class and I don't know
- 36:09how many people you're getting a couple of 1000 people in them,
- 36:11aren't you? Like, I don't know how you're
- 36:13managing it, but with the increase in visibility that you
- 36:18get, and I don't know if you can, you notice this, You seem
- 36:22to handle it very well anyway, but it seems to be as you grow,
- 36:26you start to get a few people who aren't cheering for you as
- 36:29well, which it probably happens in life in general.
- 36:32So how? How are you handling the haters?
- 36:37I've always wanted more. I was gutted before that.
- 36:40It was all just far too positive.
- 36:42Clearly I wasn't big time enough.
- 36:44Whereas I feel like now you start getting some haters, it
- 36:47feels like, yeah, really, I kind of quite enjoy it.
- 36:52I get a little bit of satisfaction out of it.
- 36:56Maybe. I guess it's lucky that because
- 36:58I'm so unbelievably stubborn with my approach that I'm going
- 37:02to do things whatever I think's best for me.
- 37:05So like, yeah, people can can trash however they want they
- 37:11can. Yeah, the whole shots disagree
- 37:13with the approach, all of that. That's actually fine.
- 37:16It's great entertainment for me and it's not going to change
- 37:19anything I do. So yeah, it's all good
- 37:21entertainment. The fact that you'll remain so
- 37:25Stonewall about it as well and like unfazed will only like
- 37:28rattle them more. I know, I know, I know.
- 37:31It's. It's quite easy to trigger some
- 37:34people. You know, if anyone who follows
- 37:37the F1, Max Verstappen has always been quite like mustard,
- 37:40hasn't he? Like hate him or love him?
- 37:42And then I remember seeing him last year get asked about his
- 37:45haters and he was like, I need some new haters because the old
- 37:48ones have all turned into fans. It's.
- 37:54Converting them, yeah. Oh well, good stuff.
- 37:59We'll we'll TuneIn on the weekend to see what Strava Dark
- 38:02is all about. Lovely stuff.
- 38:06There we go. Jake Smith has been sitting
- 38:11quietly, patiently, thinking about his race on the weekend,
- 38:15thinking about his heart rate from this morning, thinking
- 38:17about his lactate from last week.
- 38:19How's it going? But for you, Jake.
- 38:22Yeah, going very well. Very excited for this.
- 38:25It's like the British champs this weekend.
- 38:27Barf, I won it last year, but this year it's quite a bit
- 38:31stronger, but it's perfect weather.
- 38:35Well, I mean for myself, I think it's supposed to be like 35 mile
- 38:41per hour gusts in wind. So I that's like perfect for me.
- 38:46You always end up in the wind, don't you?
- 38:50It was all in last year I think. I think honestly, the best
- 38:53weather I had was London and that was quite warm because it
- 38:57was like great every time I stepped on the line.
- 38:59And then someone's already messaged me before Bath saying I
- 39:03shouldn't, I shouldn't have signed up because you're doing
- 39:06it because I knew the weather's going to be bad.
- 39:08But it's, yeah. So on average, it's like 20 mile
- 39:12per hour winds. It's going to be gusts of maybe
- 39:1460 Commons per hour. And I'm just buzzing.
- 39:17I I love that sort of stuff. It's going to be tough because I
- 39:23mean, there's Joe Wakefield of Manthor, Ben Connor, Phil
- 39:26Sessman, 2 of the guys already have the time for the world's.
- 39:31So I think they want it to be slow.
- 39:33I'm not going to let it be slow. Yeah, it it would be very, very
- 39:39tough to do it on that course because it's a very thing is
- 39:43they say that there's that like big hill at the very end, but
- 39:46you do get that downhill the first case.
- 39:48So like it does what's equal out.
- 39:52Almost like I know Phil was doing Berlin in two weeks and he
- 39:58wants a fast time. If two of the guys already have
- 40:01the time, like I mean Wakefield burn, he'll just chop it.
- 40:04He only wants to do is get to the top of the hill, 200 meters
- 40:07and outsprint us all. So I'm going, he's got the time
- 40:12as well. Does he?
- 40:13Yes. So those two at the time, I'm
- 40:15hoping Ben, Connor and I just lead it out and I'm just gonna,
- 40:19yeah, just throw everything at these guys.
- 40:23I'm not, I'm not, I'm not going in and being a wet wipe
- 40:26basically and letting it be slow.
- 40:27I'm not, I'm not. I'm won a hard effort, so like
- 40:33in this 62 range would be really good.
- 40:35Like just if I lead it out like anywhere in the 62 minute.
- 40:41But I'm yeah, it's going to be a tough one, but I'm quite excited
- 40:45to race them. Yes.
- 40:47So you, as you say, you won it last year in 60 to 20 and you
- 40:51know your numbers inside out. Do you think on paper,
- 40:54objectively, you're a bit fitter than last year?
- 40:57Oh, yeah. Because like just looking at
- 40:59like, the sessions I've been doing and it's like starting my
- 41:04half marathon in February, running 61, I'm already another
- 41:08step forward. That's why I'm quite happy.
- 41:12The wind is like quite bad because it's like it's one of
- 41:16those, you know, I know you can't compare every race because
- 41:20like for example, last year I had Darry Griffiths who took the
- 41:24first 5K out in 1417. So like, but then it was like
- 41:28the last 10 miles was just just got slower and slower because
- 41:32you went out so odd. A bit like the Japanese
- 41:35approach. So it actually worked.
- 41:37But but the I'm quite happy. Like the weather's like a bit
- 41:43rubbish because you can't really, and it's a proper race.
- 41:46So you can't really compare because I'm one to, I would turn
- 41:50up to a park run if it's Cardiff, if I did it six months
- 41:52later if it was. And I will compare no matter
- 41:55what the weather is, but I kind of because this is a proper
- 41:58race, I'm just hoping I just don't go full back inside and
- 42:01actually just go out and race it.
- 42:04And like you said, it's it's a tough one because when I did it
- 42:08last year, it was quite a big priority for me to try and win
- 42:11it. Whereas because I was, I knew
- 42:14for London there was I couldn't run like the world champs time
- 42:17or anything. Whereas this year my main focus
- 42:21now is London because I think I'm in a position where I could
- 42:24run that 2/09/30 time. So I like Tim was saying like it
- 42:30wasn't, he didn't do much of A taper into his last half.
- 42:34And mine's fairly similar because London is the bigger
- 42:37aim. Yeah, my where I'm going
- 42:42actually for a world record there, me and my sisters.
- 42:46So it's like the fastest mixed three siblings.
- 42:50So like if I run 62 minus is still run probably 71 and then
- 42:55the youngest one who's doing a first half should run 78.
- 42:59So we yeah, but the yeah. So we're going for a world
- 43:02record as a family. That's class.
- 43:05Do you know what time you have to be?
- 43:08It is terrible. It's one hour, 51 per person.
- 43:11It's like we should put two hours on it.
- 43:16There's no interest. You have to do like that.
- 43:19You have to like put, you know, you have to like go onto the
- 43:21website and put your name for it.
- 43:23But I have a feeling as soon as we do it, you know, you're going
- 43:26to get like Henrik, Jakob and the sister.
- 43:32And we're like, yeah, see you later.
- 43:35But you have to all be in it like the same race.
- 43:37And and it's one of those as well.
- 43:40It's, I'm don't want to sound sexist, but if you had two
- 43:43brothers and a sister, because males are quicker, like we're in
- 43:48a bit of a disadvantage, but we should be running around 3 1/2
- 43:53hour mark for three of us, which is it's not bad for a little
- 43:58family. Yeah, so your sister who is
- 44:02going to run like maybe 70 low, she's been running for a while
- 44:06and because that's bloody good going.
- 44:08Yeah, I paced her in 24. She ran a 231 marathon in
- 44:12Valencia and then just came third at National Cross.
- 44:15So I used to train her, but it got never train your sister,
- 44:19it's tough, never train her. But she's now with a brilliant
- 44:23coach and she's just been getting better and better.
- 44:26And then my youngest sisters just got into it and I don't
- 44:30know what it is with my family. We can just for some reason just
- 44:33take up running away a decent standard.
- 44:37But there is a bit of competition between those two
- 44:39and I can already see it. So yeah.
- 44:44And my youngest sister will probably, because I'm, I'm
- 44:46helping you out with coaching, will probably leave me after
- 44:48this race anyway because she doesn't listen.
- 44:51So it's good fun and I think it's quite nice going into Bath
- 44:58altogether. So it's like, whatever happens,
- 45:01if you have to, if you blow up, just walk to the finish.
- 45:03We'll get the record, but just walk like finish.
- 45:07It should be good fun. Are they big into the data as
- 45:11well? No, Molly, no, she doesn't work
- 45:14hard and monitor or anything. It's just me.
- 45:16I think because I talked to Dan Nash a lot, I think I've fallen
- 45:19into that trap. I do love my data.
- 45:23Like if you asked me to take my lactic after the race, I
- 45:25probably would. But I know like for Sunday, I
- 45:30know like just I'm just almost gonna because I think I'll have
- 45:34to front run it. I know I can almost hold like
- 45:37two 55258 OK, just don't go any quicker than that and just sit
- 45:43at the front and try and hurt wig wigging.
- 45:46But it's just I just don't know how to beat that guy.
- 45:49That's the problem. So it's going to be quite
- 45:53interesting. Well, it's class and it's
- 45:55exciting that you're so brave enough and to take it on and not
- 46:00be like, well, I'll just kind of sit in the park and like take a
- 46:05place. You got to get after it.
- 46:07Yeah, but then it just, I think the problem is it's like you
- 46:10bring the other the other guys in it and I think I was speaking
- 46:13to Hugo far after Barcelona and he'll probably be at the front
- 46:16for a bit anyway because he wants it hard.
- 46:19His camera time. Is it live streamed?
- 46:22Sorry, is it live streamed? I don't know, I'm hoping it is,
- 46:27but last year they had like a lead vehicle.
- 46:30But they might, they should bring a lead bike in because I
- 46:33think it will be quite interesting.
- 46:36Is even the women's failed class as well?
- 46:39The women's is, yeah, I think most of the women who are doing
- 46:42it on doing a marathon maybe just judge potentially.
- 46:47But Alex Bow I don't think is doing it.
- 46:51But like, Lily Partridge doesn't have the time.
- 46:53But then it's one of those as well.
- 46:54Like, again, I hope this doesn't make me get cancelled.
- 46:58But with the men, because we don't get paces, we are racing
- 47:03it. Whereas with the woman, I think
- 47:05they're on a bit of a lucky situation where all say for
- 47:09example, lady party was like, I want to bring in, I know Ben
- 47:11Connor's racing, but I want to bring in Ben and Ben just
- 47:14literally paces her. She they're going to have like
- 47:1730 guys and breaking 70 minutes for a guy is quite a big, you
- 47:22know, statement for a semi per like for those club runners.
- 47:25So they are going to have so many runners around them they
- 47:28can just work off. Whereas it's just going to be, I
- 47:31know for a factor like 10 miles if I'm leading, it's just going
- 47:34to be, it's probably the worst three people you want in British
- 47:37distance running behind you going into the last kilometre.
- 47:41Bassman, Wakefield man, Alfie Mann, Thorpe.
- 47:45But it's a hill at the end, so we'll have to see.
- 47:50Best hope the wind blows hard. Yeah, I hope so.
- 47:53I really hope so. I want like yellow warning of
- 47:55wind. I want like I want because yeah,
- 47:58it's a 2 like course. I want like the two hour runners
- 48:01getting in the way. I just want all everything to
- 48:03happen like a part, a proper park and race.
- 48:07It's like you can they can do it in Valencia on a sunny, cold
- 48:10Sunday morning, but in Bath? Now can they do it in Stoke on a
- 48:15Tuesday night? So I'll be good.
- 48:22What sort of shape is Ben Connor in?
- 48:24Because he's a guy who's been around for a while.
- 48:27Yeah, He ran 6113 Valencia in October.
- 48:34He's been out to Kenya, but he told me he had a bit about like
- 48:38injury and illness after Valencia Marathon because he ran
- 48:40210. He ran a very decent there and
- 48:45he ran A284510K last week and he's been out in Kenya.
- 48:50But I think he's building back. I think he has his eyes on he's,
- 48:58I think he's doing Berlin as well.
- 49:01But I know he probably wants the world's road running thing.
- 49:06But I'm quite I don't know if you guys have this, but I think
- 49:10if you have to turn up to the trials if you want to get the
- 49:13team. So they're sending 4 guys to
- 49:16world road running champs. And my point of view is if if I
- 49:21went to the trials and say came top 4 but don't get the don't
- 49:23have the time, but you have until September to get the time,
- 49:26then I get the time. Why should I know it's a bold
- 49:29statement, but why should like Alex?
- 49:31She get picked over me? I know it is Alex and they love
- 49:34Alex, but I'm very into you have to turn up to the trials.
- 49:38I don't know if you guys think the same, but if I think I would
- 49:41get a bit upset if say I came top four and someone else who
- 49:45didn't turn up to the trials got selected even though we both had
- 49:48the time. The only two, well the only
- 49:53person I would probably let is a meal.
- 49:55If a meal was like I want a place, I'll be OK, you can have
- 50:00it. You want my shoes as well?
- 50:02Yeah, yeah, I'll give you anything.
- 50:08Isn't he doing Malaga on the weekend?
- 50:10Yes, 2 1/2 marathon. Sunday as well.
- 50:13I think it might be, yeah. So I mean, he could probably,
- 50:17yeah, I've heard some discussing sessions he's been doing and
- 50:23yeah, I think he's in a very good place for Malaga.
- 50:25If he's run 60 or 1 he should be getting in the 50 nines.
- 50:29Really. And Moe's record is say only,
- 50:34but it's 5932 or something, so like.
- 50:37Yeah, he ran faster Great North, but doesn't count towards
- 50:43records because you know, it is naked.
- 50:46Obviously called downhill. But yeah, I mean, Emil was the
- 50:52only two people I know who could probably get around now a meal.
- 50:55And Paddy, they should really get it quite easily I think.
- 51:01What start list did I see Divas name on the other day?
- 51:06Is doing new? Yorker yes yeah that's this
- 51:10weekend as well. Wow, that's quite a lot on going
- 51:16back to your saying about your pace and strategy.
- 51:18You could hold like 2 fifties to 250 fives.
- 51:21Will that oh. No, not not two 50s if I'm only
- 51:24two 50s as a mixture, Not not. If you're running at 2:55 then
- 51:31is there a certain heart rate at like say 5K you're happy to go
- 51:35to or at 10K you can push it a few more beats?
- 51:39I'm a bit like we spoke about this last time.
- 51:41I'm very similar with Jake in terms of I think our heart rates
- 51:44are very similar. So like in Barcelona held like
- 51:48184185 average. So anything above the 180 mark I
- 51:53don't mind. Like it doesn't really bother
- 51:55me. And if we're over 190 at 5K,
- 51:59then it could be a long, a long last 16 kilometers.
- 52:03But the first 5K is rapid. Like it's, it is all downhill
- 52:09because you basically have to get down to the river.
- 52:12And then it's it's one of those courses where if you get like
- 52:16perfect weather, it's long straights and top guys doing it,
- 52:19you could absolutely fly. And so it's a very quick course.
- 52:24I think people just think it's a slow course because of the last
- 52:27hill, but they don't put into perspective you have that you
- 52:31start from up there, so you have that downhill to begin with
- 52:33anyway. But it's funny that the best fit
- 52:37is because it's two laps. So when you're coming into your
- 52:41second lap, when you're coming into the finish, you have to
- 52:44crossover all the running starting their second lap.
- 52:48And I ran into three or four people last week last year just
- 52:51screaming at them to move because they haven't got it
- 52:53sorted. So it's literally a fight for
- 52:55all. So maybe like maybe I do some
- 53:00have something in my mind, like if Wigfield, Mantleton, Cessman,
- 53:03they're going and they run into someone, that's when I attack.
- 53:06That's what I can go around, find a gap and just go.
- 53:10Grab the family world record. Just have your sisters placed
- 53:13strategically as like blockers. No, that was, that would be
- 53:20like, you know, asking like 6 foot 550K guy to just stand
- 53:27there and just just hold. But now that they'll be, they'll
- 53:32be a lot quicker than that. If I'm if I'm lapping them,
- 53:35they're having quite a bad day I must say.
- 53:39Here's a question for all of you then, because it's something
- 53:42you've all done in this build is like kind of race in the in the
- 53:46lead up to the main goal, the main race.
- 53:49Is that something which typically you do and you enjoy
- 53:52because it breaks the block off? Because often you can kind of
- 53:56marathon blocks can be so long you can just become obsessed
- 53:59with like what marathon pace is and how it feels.
- 54:02So yeah, what's your thoughts on that?
- 54:05Jump in. I don't mind it.
- 54:08I usually like it to break up just the training and monotony
- 54:13of it. And I also see the taper mini
- 54:16taper as like actually a refresher for me.
- 54:20It's like this is new territory. Previous half marathons, like I
- 54:26think I did Lisbon before Frankfurt, the October Lisbon 1
- 54:30though, that's like that was a rain coming sideways.
- 54:35I think I ran 105 there that day.
- 54:37That was. And to be honest, I thought I
- 54:39had quite a good run. Whereas like this is the other
- 54:42end of the spectrum. So yeah, I think it's good to
- 54:47break up the training. But yeah, I'm cautious.
- 54:51I actually like having a harder effort and maybe not something
- 54:56not so pretty on the clock as opposed to something that looks
- 54:58pretty on the clock. And then, yeah.
- 55:02Yeah, I agree with you with the little mini taper.
- 55:05It's a good way to, because I'd never schedule a down week in a
- 55:09marathon block. I'd never, I just wouldn't bring
- 55:11myself to do it. But if you put like 1/2 marathon
- 55:14in there that you're targeting, then it forces you to hit a
- 55:16little drop. This is a nice way to sort of
- 55:19freshen up. And then yeah, I'm the same with
- 55:22I just love racing. So like, I couldn't imagine
- 55:24doing a what, a 12 week marathon block with actually nothing in
- 55:28there. I love to pepper in.
- 55:30It's not like they all have to be target race.
- 55:32They don't have to be 100% effort almost.
- 55:35I think that's the best thing that you come in on tired legs,
- 55:37like no taper for some of them and use it.
- 55:40It's just yeah, good hard training.
- 55:43See, I love a good race. I'm doing some doing Berlin in
- 55:50two weeks. Part of me is thinking to you
- 55:54know, the victor of or it can never pronounce his last name.
- 55:57You, you met him, Jacob. Think Victor from Sweden.
- 56:00He's just Victor for me. This.
- 56:02This. Yeah, I'm not going to attempt
- 56:03the second name. I don't know how to pronounce
- 56:06last name because he wants to load for like sub 63 and I'm I'm
- 56:10thinking of like doing like a 63 minute may dip like try and
- 56:15progress in Berlin, because I'm the very similar with these.
- 56:22I couldn't do a long block. I mean, you've seen I do.
- 56:25I love a park run. I think the week before London,
- 56:28I'm going to find the most wild park run there is and just run
- 56:33hard. For some reason, I have a
- 56:36tendency to run 1443 no matter it could be all roads or it
- 56:39could be grasp with stairs. But I I've really got into it
- 56:46this block more about like it'll be my third half of this block,
- 56:53the Berlin 1, But I'm using that more as a training session.
- 56:57Like this weekend is going to really hurt.
- 56:58But then I'm using that more as a training stimulus.
- 57:01But it is really nice. It's like like Jake was just
- 57:04saying, it's like your mileage is all is brought down.
- 57:07So for example, the week before I did last week, it was like 224
- 57:12K, whereas this week could be like 120.
- 57:14So it's almost 50% and it almost helps you with not necessarily
- 57:19this week, but it more helps you for like the training in three,
- 57:22two to three weeks time where you feel a little bit fresher.
- 57:25So I do quite enjoy it. Yeah, I'm looking forward to the
- 57:30next two races anyway. You big alpha fly guy as well
- 57:34Over vapour flies or does it vary?
- 57:37I've worn my favorite ever night shoes, the, oh, you know, the
- 57:40first vapour fly that came out like in 20/17/20.
- 57:44I am. I remember in like 21 I asked my
- 57:47agent for like the last three pairs of them and I just kept
- 57:50wearing them. And I should never say this.
- 57:54The Alpha Flight 3 is it's a very, very, I'm very happy with
- 57:58it. But the fake flight just isn't
- 58:01the same anymore compared to what it used to be like.
- 58:04I feel like it's too aggressive almost and it does.
- 58:09I wore it for great self run last year and it was, it was
- 58:13very good. But it is you just, I don't feel
- 58:15like you get the bounce almost. Maybe that's because I wear the
- 58:18outfly more often. I do want to try the what's the
- 58:23other one called the the really quick St. fly because it has a
- 58:27common plate in it. But that just I put them on and
- 58:29I thought my feet were going to break just walking around
- 58:32because that's very aggressive. So yeah, if they could bring
- 58:36back, I've even asked if they could bring back like the OG
- 58:38Vapor Fly. I would wear that hands down in
- 58:41any race, but they just, they just don't sell them anymore.
- 58:45But you know what? I don't know if I can even talk
- 58:47about this because I'm obviously Brooks.
- 58:48But just before before I signed, I actually bought a pair of the
- 58:53OG vapours. I randomly I found them in Japan
- 58:57brand new. So I got them in what was it
- 59:002024? I guess 20?
- 59:03Wait, 2025, even 2025 brand new pair I'm worn Crazy.
- 59:08But you know how you're saying? Because I had the same
- 59:10nostalgia. They were the first ever super
- 59:12shoes I wore ever, like first and back in the day.
- 59:15And I was like, yeah, these are the greatest shoes ever.
- 59:17I then put them on. I was like, you know, actually
- 59:20these are a bit bang average. So I don't know if I had, yeah,
- 59:24I don't know if it was just the memory because it's like,
- 59:27because we went from obviously just normal flats and you
- 59:29suddenly put this carbon plate. I don't know if it was like, you
- 59:32feel like you're cheating. They're so good.
- 59:33But I had the same memory as you, and then trying them again,
- 59:37I was like, he's actually nowhere near what the new ones
- 59:40are. So yeah, I don't know, maybe is
- 59:42that just the nostalgia factor? Yeah.
- 59:47What about the alpha ones, Jake? Have you got any of them
- 59:49knocking around? Because I know.
- 59:52No, I'm. Just wearing the alpha threes
- 59:55now, I think who wore someone wore the alpha floor?
- 1:00:01I don't know. Oh.
- 1:00:02Was it Cam war war. In Lisbon wore the A4.
- 1:00:06I don't know what they look like yeah yeah it's we'll see I
- 1:00:12almost I did last year before barf.
- 1:00:15I actually searched up what's better the vapour 3 or the A3,
- 1:00:19even though I'm a Nike guy but I was asking bloody chat GTP and
- 1:00:23let's run but I think I'm a bit ahead of that now so yeah I'm a
- 1:00:28big fan of the alpha. I think I'm just getting used to
- 1:00:31it, but it's like it's so annoying because like every time
- 1:00:34a new shoe comes out, you think you're at a disadvantage because
- 1:00:38it's better. But even though I've always
- 1:00:42liked the A2, I wasn't a big fan of but the first, the first
- 1:00:47edition, the 3rd edition, I'm big, big fans of who knows what
- 1:00:52the four will be like? But I've that the annoying thing
- 1:00:56is like, you know, all the shoes now are very, very similar.
- 1:00:59OK, that might be like .1 difference, but they are very
- 1:01:02similar apparently. I've heard crazy things about
- 1:01:06the Puma ones. I thought what they're called,
- 1:01:10but the new Puma is that R is it R?
- 1:01:12Yeah, those ones apparently I've, well Dan Nash is testing
- 1:01:17with his results told me that the Fasas are in crazy
- 1:01:22apparently. I feel like because you you're
- 1:01:27all three, you come from three different brands.
- 1:01:29I have to balance it and allow Tim to speak about ASICS and
- 1:01:33Jacob Brooke. So how have you?
- 1:01:36Are the Super Blast threes as soft as they look?
- 1:01:40Yeah, there. I think I spoke about this last
- 1:01:43time. the Super joggers are just nuts.
- 1:01:45So I've brought the threes here with me and I've got a problem
- 1:01:49taking trying to get them off my feet.
- 1:01:52I'm even now like comparing them to a mega blast, like the megas
- 1:01:57obviously got a bit more of a rebound push back, so I'd like
- 1:02:02that to get moving a bit more. But the Super blast three, if
- 1:02:05you're just like wanting to cruise round like all banged up
- 1:02:08from a race. Besh Beshu.
- 1:02:11I didn't think the twos could get better and it's actually a
- 1:02:14big difference. I thought it'd just be a very
- 1:02:16small improvement. So they're great.
- 1:02:19And then on the weekend I wore the Raid 2, which isn't
- 1:02:25available for purchase yet, but it's like a second approved, I
- 1:02:31guess prototype if you like, but it's I think they wore it at
- 1:02:33Seville. And if anyone wants to check it
- 1:02:35out, I actually think Asic's posted on this Seville reel that
- 1:02:40was actually the Raid 2. So that's the clearest thing you
- 1:02:42can see off that shoe. Very light.
- 1:02:46I think it's still 120 grams. Even the photos I got of my foot
- 1:02:50when I was running, I was laughing.
- 1:02:51I'm literally like my toes are on the concrete, so it
- 1:02:56compresses that much. It's pretty soft, so I might
- 1:03:01even look for that over the edge for London, but I'm still
- 1:03:04working all that out. But yeah, I I can't say anything
- 1:03:08better about that shoe. I'm really happy with it.
- 1:03:12I do think ASICS almost do the best mileage shoe, the
- 1:03:17Novoclast. Oh, I actually.
- 1:03:20You know what? I.
- 1:03:21No, they're good, but there's so many.
- 1:03:23There's a little niche one called the Glide Ride Max 2 that
- 1:03:26Andy Buchanan, our national record holder, has put us all
- 1:03:29onto. So we kind of jug around in the
- 1:03:33Glide Ride, but it doesn't get a whole lot of marketing.
- 1:03:35Like most people doesn't know it exists, but most of the
- 1:03:38marathons are in that yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:41So there's a little niche 6 month for you.
- 1:03:46I'll be sold out now. We've had like 2 pairs and
- 1:03:49they'll just be gone. And Jake yourself.
- 1:03:55We're about the Was it the Hyperion 3 or 6?
- 1:04:02I guess they're not releases. Yeah, Prototype, I think they
- 1:04:06don't come out for another six months or something.
- 1:04:08But I've been loving them. I've been pepper in the number,
- 1:04:11all my videos and stuff. I've not had Brooks tell me off.
- 1:04:14So I guess I'm I'm good to promote it.
- 1:04:17But there there's nothing really I guess out there too much about
- 1:04:22them. They're quality guys.
- 1:04:23Yeah, I wore them. I've been wearing them.
- 1:04:26I saved a fresh pair for Tokyo. I guess it's a bit of a waste,
- 1:04:31but at least I'm getting another one in London because yeah,
- 1:04:34they're still it's like very limited.
- 1:04:36Luckily I'm yeah prototype sizing, so I've been rating them
- 1:04:41definitely an improvement from the the license, the fight,
- 1:04:44which I'd like already. Do you do any of your like daily
- 1:04:48stuff? And is it the like the glycerin
- 1:04:50Max where it looks like the stack is like that?
- 1:04:54Yeah, I what have I got? I'm terrible with the names.
- 1:04:58I feel like I've got so many shoes there that because there's
- 1:05:01what? Glycerin Max, Ghost Max and I've
- 1:05:03got the, yeah, one pair of Glycerin Max, but I'm actually
- 1:05:06not the biggest fan of the massive chunky shoes.
- 1:05:10I feel like I just want to feel the ground a bit more.
- 1:05:13So I, I like a, even just a classic like Brooks Ghost, I'd
- 1:05:18say that's most of my easy runs. And then the Hyperion 3, it's
- 1:05:22like the, so there's like the elite range that's like with the
- 1:05:27carbon plate. And then they've got a bit like
- 1:05:29a, you know, like an Adidas Evo SL, sort of one of those daily
- 1:05:34trainings, but you could pick up the pace kind of thing.
- 1:05:36It's like very lightweight. They've got a similar Hyperion
- 1:05:39freeze. I rate that as over easy running
- 1:05:42and be I too much I can wear anything.
- 1:05:45Like I'm not very picky in any way.
- 1:05:48Very good. Just to go back to Jake Smith,
- 1:05:51the do you wear the structures at all?
- 1:05:54You wear the zoom, that's training, don't you?
- 1:05:58So I wear the Zoom flight for like LT1 stuff and then my long
- 1:06:02runs, the Vimero premium into the massive like space boot
- 1:06:06thing and then all the other easy runs like the Marrows.
- 1:06:10I don't think I'll ever go off a shoe than the Marrow if I'm a
- 1:06:13Nike guy. I'm a massive, massive fan of
- 1:06:16the Barrow structures. I think they've just hurt my
- 1:06:20like Soleus and stuff, whereas I don't know what it is for the
- 1:06:23Romero, which I've just always been very comfortable with it.
- 1:06:28But the premiums are funny. No one thinks you can run fast
- 1:06:31in them, but I think they're actually very decent.
- 1:06:35They are the the only good thing about them.
- 1:06:37The best thing about American. It does make me like close to
- 1:06:415859 because they're so big and so it does make me a bit taller,
- 1:06:48but they're they're solid. Some shoe.
- 1:06:50I mean, I've been worn another shoe for since 2021.
- 1:06:58So it's quite weird, like listening to you guys talk about
- 1:07:01the other shoes because I used to wear those shoes back in the
- 1:07:05day. But it's it's good fun.
- 1:07:09Always associate those premiums as like just the kind of month
- 1:07:12shoe, no? No, but I'm not sure I can do
- 1:07:16what he does at the end of his long runs and just drop down
- 1:07:18tight for 20 milling in these bloody vomeros.
- 1:07:24Yeah, he's one guy I want to go train with.
- 1:07:26So I think I think I need to get a bit fit if I wanted to go
- 1:07:31train with him because I would be end up in a bin in a hole.
- 1:07:36It does. It wouldn't be waiting around
- 1:07:38Muddy. No, no, you stop for a peas like
- 1:07:41no, you can catch up. But then if he just stops,
- 1:07:45repeat. You have to stop.
- 1:07:46That's the rule. I guess to wrap it up fellas,
- 1:07:49we've got a few listener questions, so I'll just fly
- 1:07:52through a few of them. This one's for Tim, Tom.
- 1:07:55Ted says Tim's brutally honest opinion on Perth Running
- 1:07:58Festival. Because I know you came over in
- 1:08:01October, isn't it? Yeah, I actually left Perth
- 1:08:09telling everyone on the East Coast that, sorry to anyone in
- 1:08:12Sydney, but I was saying we need to swap Perth and Sydney around.
- 1:08:15I think Perth's actually the best city in Australia.
- 1:08:19It's so similar to Brisbane. So the actual city in the
- 1:08:21course, it's so undersold that race.
- 1:08:25Like we just, I don't know if it's the distance between the
- 1:08:28two that we don't hear much about it, but I really love the
- 1:08:31event. It what probably makes it tricky
- 1:08:35for the organizers is that they run all the events, including
- 1:08:38the marathon on one morning. So and I absolutely get that.
- 1:08:44So this you're always going to have a few logistical challenges
- 1:08:47and stuff in there. But no, I had a great time at
- 1:08:49the event and I'd I'd love to be back this year.
- 1:08:52I haven't thought about what I'm doing in October, but I had that
- 1:08:56much of a good time that I want to come back.
- 1:08:59It's so funny, often a tangent a little bit, but on the day of
- 1:09:03that race, I think I seen you in the morning but didn't realize
- 1:09:07it was you. Did you stay in the Pan Pacific?
- 1:09:09That's a weird question. I was, I should be able to.
- 1:09:15I don't know the name of the hotel, I was a while away.
- 1:09:17Actually this does bring up a funny story.
- 1:09:21Probably was me if you saw me walking to the start for 45
- 1:09:24minutes because I couldn't get an Uber and couldn't.
- 1:09:26And the city doesn't have bikes. Like you can't buy bikes.
- 1:09:31Was the hotel behind like a big massive piece of grass near the
- 1:09:34river on the other side from the start?
- 1:09:37Because I seen you, I didn't didn't know it was you.
- 1:09:40And you know, just when you like, Perth's a pretty small
- 1:09:44place. So anyone who's good at running
- 1:09:46largely you would know who they are.
- 1:09:48And then I was like, look, I seen you from behind.
- 1:09:51I was like, I don't know the look of that guy.
- 1:09:53And you had the pair of super, I think the green super blast,
- 1:09:56son. I was like, who's got a pair of
- 1:09:57decent shoes on senior legs and was like, yeah, definitely a
- 1:10:00good runner. And then you just started your
- 1:10:03run. I was like, I wonder who that
- 1:10:04was? And then a scene, your name like
- 1:10:07won the race. I was like, shit, Tim's an A6
- 1:10:09guy. Yeah, I remember doing that.
- 1:10:12You might have seen me if I was looking pretty stressed.
- 1:10:16That was actually really funny. I think I only got to the venue
- 1:10:1930 minutes before the race and the marathon was going round so
- 1:10:22I couldn't cross the bridge. Oh, it was actually pretty,
- 1:10:25Yeah. I was getting pretty stressed
- 1:10:27that I was going to fly six hours for this race and not be
- 1:10:30on the start line. Good job.
- 1:10:32Didn't say. Oh, hi Tim.
- 1:10:34How you going? You.
- 1:10:35Have ignored me. Hope not.
- 1:10:38Yeah. Second question comes from the
- 1:10:43Nuggets name wrong thing. Say a Dutch name Stein with top
- 1:10:46coning and he's asking, do you all listen to anything on your
- 1:10:52runs? And if you do music, podcasts,
- 1:10:54audio books, what's the go? That's easy.
- 1:10:58Double pod, obviously. Come on.
- 1:11:01So anyone I got you I'm yeah, I'm just podcasting like
- 1:11:11straight up running podcasts, MMA podcasts, Arsenal podcast,
- 1:11:18those sort of yeah classics on rotation I.
- 1:11:21Don't listen to anything. What about you, Jake?
- 1:11:25I'm really into the two parts. Well, of course we have to give
- 1:11:29that show up, but the other two big podcasts I love are Coffee
- 1:11:33Club and For The Kudos. Yeah, who's who's the other guy?
- 1:11:40Who does it? Not brat.
- 1:11:41Who's the other guy? Joel German.
- 1:11:43What? Joel Turner.
- 1:11:46Joel Turner? Joel Todan White.
- 1:11:50He is hilarious on it. Yeah, he's a funny guy.
- 1:11:53I should actually. I haven't really listened to as
- 1:11:56I don't really listen to podcasts, but yeah, I've heard
- 1:11:58good things. Well, the last one when he was
- 1:12:00like, yeah, I was supposed to go out for a run Saturday.
- 1:12:02He didn't. And he's like had five days
- 1:12:04completely off and he's just, he just loves it.
- 1:12:08But him and Brett, yeah, I'm really enjoying them.
- 1:12:11But then it's like music as well.
- 1:12:13I mean, I'm a Swifty. I like all that sorts.
- 1:12:17Trying to listen to more Michael Jackson now.
- 1:12:19I don't know. I'm just into different music I
- 1:12:22guess as well. Two things.
- 1:12:27Joel Turban White I think he ran like was it 62 dads Tim back in
- 1:12:30the day? I mean, I feel like we're at the
- 1:12:33same time like he ran and this is like pre super shoes that we
- 1:12:38might have had that Vapor fly one.
- 1:12:40I think he might have done 62 O 1 or 62 O3, very good run.
- 1:12:45And kind of like with the inflation of super shoes, you
- 1:12:48could say it's like, I know we obviously can't factor that in,
- 1:12:51but yeah, it was around 1/5, you know, right at the start of this
- 1:12:54kind of shoe surge. But then yeah, from how he
- 1:12:57speaks about training and now, you would never know.
- 1:13:01It's his laugh as well. His laugh is contagious, That
- 1:13:05laugh. And also a good time to plug
- 1:13:09Tim's actually runs his own podcasts with two guys as well.
- 1:13:12So if if, Jake, if you want to listen to some more training on
- 1:13:16your runs, then get onto the journey, man.
- 1:13:19Yeah, it's called the Journeyman Podcast.
- 1:13:22I I actually try not to talk too much about running.
- 1:13:25I'd probably talk more about general sport.
- 1:13:26But yeah, I did go through a bit of race stuff over there as
- 1:13:30well, so feel free to give it a listen.
- 1:13:33Stuart 2391 was asking about Bath half.
- 1:13:35I think we've covered that extensively.
- 1:13:38And Rachel McGinnis, we've perhaps covered this, but see if
- 1:13:42you want to add to what variables as in like data 1/2
- 1:13:48race in the build up or a predictor marathon session, do
- 1:13:51you use to kind of lock in what marathon pace is going to be or
- 1:13:56do you not? Oh, use all of that to give
- 1:13:59myself a range, not a not a specific number, but I'll try
- 1:14:03and have like a three to four second range would be nice.
- 1:14:07And then, like the other boys were saying earlier, I'll got it
- 1:14:10by feel on the day. I think for me it's it might be
- 1:14:18very similar to cheek. We just saw two and 9:30 where
- 1:14:21we're just like, screw it, whatever happens, we're going
- 1:14:24through it. Yeah.
- 1:14:27But for this, it's different to others.
- 1:14:29It's purely exactly go at that pace, doesn't matter whether
- 1:14:32you're in the shape or not. It's just commit to the pace as
- 1:14:36as opposed to as opposed to going for the sensible control.
- 1:14:40That's the goal. Yeah.
- 1:14:42There's not a lot of good thinking behind it.
- 1:14:47Doesn't matter whether you're in the shape or not.
- 1:14:49That is unbelievable. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:14:50Yeah. I've been in Japan for too long.
- 1:14:56Yeah, yeah, yeah, I've committed.
- 1:14:58Committed fully. Well, it's funny that 20930
- 1:15:01would be conservative after Tokyo Marathon going out at 208
- 1:15:05pace, but it's mad that yeah, that would be a nice controlled
- 1:15:09start by Japanese standards. I guess a follow on to your
- 1:15:15answer, Tim, at what point would you kind of lock that range in
- 1:15:20like 2 weeks out or earlier or? Usually two days before, like
- 1:15:25I'll try and not think about that stuff and like the actual
- 1:15:29race. So it'll probably be the last
- 1:15:31workout, which obviously I wouldn't change how you're going
- 1:15:35to attack the race, but just like, you know, that final point
- 1:15:39where the everything's done, you're putting your feet up.
- 1:15:41So two days out. But the things that my coach and
- 1:15:45I would use are your usually your previous race and factors
- 1:15:52that might have made that faster or slower and then your two
- 1:15:56biggest sessions. And pretty much it's still a
- 1:16:00guesstimate, but they're probably the three things that
- 1:16:02we use. Cool and lastly Owen, who's one
- 1:16:08of the other hosts on here says with London just under seven
- 1:16:12weeks away, is it easy for good sessions or results to alter
- 1:16:17your goals or do you try not to get carried away I.
- 1:16:23Mean, I guess as we said, it's a little different.
- 1:16:26I feel like London with that 2/09/30 is going to be a pace.
- 1:16:30There's going to be people going.
- 1:16:32I'd say it's very different to another race where, yeah, like
- 1:16:35for example, last year when I ran my Tokyo PB, I was aiming
- 1:16:40for something different at the start of the block.
- 1:16:41And then as I got a fitter and fitter, naturally the goals
- 1:16:45shift. So yeah, I think it's, you don't
- 1:16:49want to get too carried away, but definitely there's things in
- 1:16:53training that can indicate you're going a certain way.
- 1:16:55It's like, oh, you set the goal at 2:09, It's like you're
- 1:16:57getting nowhere near. Then I guess you've got to adapt
- 1:17:00it. I think for me it's say if
- 1:17:07Europeans was next year and I was a year fitter and say, for
- 1:17:11example, just say in a in a different world to and I thought
- 1:17:15it was quite an easier option. I think because because of my
- 1:17:20history and my injuries and stuff, I haven't had a British
- 1:17:22fest in quite a long time. So just getting that British
- 1:17:26fest for especially a home champs is a huge thing to say.
- 1:17:30Even if I was apparently in 2728 shape just like and I said in a
- 1:17:36different world, I would probably still go to the two
- 1:17:399:30 because I think it means more to my career now to get a
- 1:17:43British vest in the time. And so I don't think the only
- 1:17:48thing that would alter is if I get like an injury or something
- 1:17:51before it. Yeah, no matter what I think
- 1:17:55Jake and I are going to do be doing a lot of running that day
- 1:17:58together, hopefully 42.2 K hopefully.
- 1:18:04And Ryan, I'm pretty useless, he might have to prompt me again on
- 1:18:07the question I forgotten. Yeah, maybe it's most relevant
- 1:18:11to you as well, given the race on the weekend, but like, is it
- 1:18:14easy for good sessions or good results to alter your goals?
- 1:18:18Or do you try and not get carried away?
- 1:18:20Yeah, I hinted at this earlier. If anything, I'm a little bit
- 1:18:23worried, like worried it's not the right word.
- 1:18:26But yeah, cautious, I think a better word I use in my good
- 1:18:31marathons, I haven't had things going, let's say, well, you
- 1:18:35know, before them and it usually clicks on the day and it's very
- 1:18:39common to see people run a half well and being nowhere to be
- 1:18:43seen on race day and the full marathon.
- 1:18:45So kind of shifting my focus now on like we were talking about
- 1:18:50going up to Font, that's probably not going to happen
- 1:18:54now. Or I'm definitely an advocate to
- 1:18:55stay at sea level and try and work on as a sound conditioning
- 1:19:00and lengthening as opposed to sharpening even more and just
- 1:19:05making sure I execute and not have one of those builds where
- 1:19:08you do good and then go missing on race day.
- 1:19:11Stuff. Before I get into the wrap up,
- 1:19:15do you guys have any more things you want to talk about or any
- 1:19:17questions for each other? Brisbane rules plan tomorrow
- 1:19:20morning if you feel as need something to do.
- 1:19:26It's a big, big rugby weekend on Saturday.
- 1:19:29Who's playing? It's the final Six Nations
- 1:19:33games. Are Wales playing?
- 1:19:36Yeah, it's Wales, Wales, Italy, England, France, Scotland,
- 1:19:45Ireland, but it's like 4 different teams can win it.
- 1:19:48Oh. OK.
- 1:19:49So is it like a round Robin like?
- 1:19:51A yeah, So it's a final. It's a final one England got but
- 1:19:55beaten by Italy last week for the first time in 17 years or
- 1:19:58something. So yeah, so I might have to give
- 1:20:04the Brisbane Roy. But then there's a lot of
- 1:20:05there's a lot of I might Leon say betting going on in the
- 1:20:08Cheltenham Festival. So it turned out beat.
- 1:20:14That's a good watch. ITV or is it Channel 4?
- 1:20:17If you're bored today, stick that on.
- 1:20:20This is a. Chapman now.
- 1:20:22Yeah, Chapman's on that. That's horses, isn't?
- 1:20:24Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:20:27It's. Good fun.
- 1:20:28Yeah, it's good fun. But if you're bored, it's just
- 1:20:31like, true. If you're just chilling out for
- 1:20:33a run or something, you stick around.
- 1:20:34And I know we're not really supposed to say betting is good,
- 1:20:39but it is quite a lot. I'm not BET, but and like
- 1:20:43sometimes when we're doing the weekly podcast, we kind of like
- 1:20:46talk about who might be the favorites for race and stuff in
- 1:20:49in running terms. What odds would you give
- 1:20:52yourself for Saturday, Jake? 20 to 1. 20 to one, Yeah.
- 1:20:57Go outside. Huh, I'll check a turn around.
- 1:21:01Go with the outside, yeah. Yeah, put a turn around.
- 1:21:05I think. I think if the wind the wind
- 1:21:07gets worse, my odds get better. That's what athletics.
- 1:21:12If it's a perfect date, go downhill.
- 1:21:15We need more gambling. That's what makes other sports
- 1:21:18fun I feel like. Get the gambling on our flags.
- 1:21:22Well, they did that. They did that Podium Festival,
- 1:21:25the 5K back in like 21 they had. You could bet on athletes and
- 1:21:32that was quite good fun. That was quite good fun.
- 1:21:35You might be in the UK. No, maybe not.
- 1:21:37Maybe just I. Remember it?
- 1:21:39Yeah. Yeah, I might have been there.
- 1:21:42Yeah. Well ahead of London will open
- 1:21:46the Jake Barclough overall under 30 kilometers market.
- 1:21:52That is a God, medical tent or not.
- 1:21:57Surely that's got to be 5050. That's worth a pun.
- 1:22:06Unfortunately not Jake, I'm in to the Australia.
- 1:22:09I'll be back later in the year though, maybe get to commies.
- 1:22:13On us. Nice Tim, how are the RAW doing
- 1:22:19in general? We had the best result we could
- 1:22:22have last week, which was a buy, so we didn't get to play.
- 1:22:25And then we've got the bottom place team tomorrow, which is
- 1:22:31probably the only game I look out and go.
- 1:22:33And that like this team's probably like the state that W
- 1:22:36Sydney Wanderers probably relate them to a Spurs right now.
- 1:22:39They're just in absolute shambles.
- 1:22:43So yeah, like I I'll be out running so I won't get to watch
- 1:22:45it, but it's the only game of our last six that you look out
- 1:22:48and go. Surely we win.
- 1:22:52And if not, I'll probably just put the jersey back in the
- 1:22:54suitcase and come back in October for next year.
- 1:22:59It's so funny, right on that. Perth Glory for a period, they
- 1:23:02had Daniel Storage sign for them, didn't he?
- 1:23:05I assume you would remember that, Tim.
- 1:23:07Yeah. And he, he had a reputation
- 1:23:09whilst he was at Liverpool for being injury prone.
- 1:23:11And then when he came to Perth, I think he got injured in his
- 1:23:16first game and then just like got paid for a year and just sat
- 1:23:20on the beach, had like this fat house in City Beach.
- 1:23:23It just got seen though all the time.
- 1:23:26I think they ended up like they didn't see at his full deal in
- 1:23:31the end. I think they came to an
- 1:23:32agreement or whatever. But yeah, it didn't really work
- 1:23:34out the way that hoped. Like when Del Piero came out,
- 1:23:37that is probably like the best or even 1 matter that's gone
- 1:23:41really well. But yeah, Sturridge, yeah, it
- 1:23:44was a bit of a not a good move. I'm always surprised that like
- 1:23:50more, you know, the way the MLS attracts like the retirees.
- 1:23:53I don't know why more don't come over to Australia for the
- 1:23:55lifestyle. We've got a salary cap and it's
- 1:23:58not big, whereas I don't think the MLS would have a salary cap.
- 1:24:03You've also got a lot more probably TV rights and it's just
- 1:24:08a bigger league, like not even talking about quality of
- 1:24:11football. And I guess at that point in
- 1:24:13their career they're probably not worried about quality.
- 1:24:15It's, you know, just setting yourself up.
- 1:24:19So yeah, MLS is actually probably a better move in my
- 1:24:21opinion, which is sad to say, but yeah.
- 1:24:27OK, Then I'll bring this home with the race readiness score.
- 1:24:30We'll roll them forward from last week.
- 1:24:32So starting with remember we talked about like how a
- 1:24:35percentage, how confident you would be if the race was like
- 1:24:38next week. Dick Smith, you went with 87%
- 1:24:41and you're saying the way you would increase that is by more
- 1:24:46like long run confidence in gel practice.
- 1:24:49Which way is the needle moving? 90% now I did a 40K long run,
- 1:24:54took 4 gels and I did a marathon on Sunday.
- 1:24:59So I was just helping some friends and took another 4 gels.
- 1:25:02So that's and that's a very positive sign.
- 1:25:07You can tell maybe for Jake this is that's just normal.
- 1:25:10But the taper wasn't isn't too big into part.
- 1:25:14But yeah, it's really, I'm getting used to the gels.
- 1:25:18It doesn't feel long anymore. The matter like it doesn't
- 1:25:22really like when you get to 20 miles.
- 1:25:24I don't feel like that's a long way, which I think is a good
- 1:25:28thing. It's more for the mental side
- 1:25:29for me. And I knew I wanted to get a
- 1:25:33long one in last weekend because I have Bath and then I might see
- 1:25:37Tim the week after Bath, but then it's Berlin.
- 1:25:41And then by then it's like, yeah, maybe one more long run.
- 1:25:45So I've almost done all the long runs, which is a bit scary, but
- 1:25:51I would give myself a good 90%. I I would love to race it.
- 1:25:54I'm not gonna lie. I want to race soon.
- 1:25:56I just, I've already said I just want me to be basically just
- 1:25:59getting quite drunk. And I'm quite looking forward to
- 1:26:05that. That's what's good to hear, the
- 1:26:08confidence and the scores trending up.
- 1:26:10Tim, how about you? You were 78%.
- 1:26:14That was perhaps based on a bit of uncertainty regarding your
- 1:26:17confidence and your shorter speed.
- 1:26:21I actually thought about this answer.
- 1:26:24I reckon if let's say if the race was like 2 weeks, I'd
- 1:26:27probably get myself in the 80s. But just by the question, I'm
- 1:26:30going to move the needle backwards just purely because
- 1:26:33I'm still recovering this week. Things are still high, legs are
- 1:26:36a bit beat up, but I'm expecting to go from like let's say this
- 1:26:40week 74 to fingers crossed, mid 80s by the next time we speak.
- 1:26:45And I think that'd happened pretty quickly.
- 1:26:47Like my answer this time last week probably would have been
- 1:26:50low 80s. Yeah, I'm going to go in that
- 1:26:53position next. Next Thursday I'll be in that
- 1:26:56position. Yeah.
- 1:26:57I can't walk. I can't run.
- 1:26:59I'm still aching. Jake Barclough, you said when I
- 1:27:05first asked you 3% and then you reconfigured to I'm 64% because
- 1:27:13you said you felt like you're in PB shape over any of the shorter
- 1:27:17stuff. But obviously it was that the
- 1:27:18knee issue that you were very unsure of.
- 1:27:22Yeah, yeah, I guess that shows how, yeah, I was that
- 1:27:26unconfident. I'd make the start of Tokyo.
- 1:27:30What I give it now. I'd say post Tokyo, immediately
- 1:27:34after the race definitely was up.
- 1:27:36So like 70 something, 76, let's say, just because of how good it
- 1:27:44felt aerobically running that pace that I felt like with a few
- 1:27:47more long runs because I hadn't done yeah, single long run for
- 1:27:50ages, that then it's like I feel like my speed's there, which
- 1:27:54it's never been before. It's always been my weakness.
- 1:27:56I'm the opposite of Jake RA. You were kind of saying that you
- 1:28:00found like the marathon's a long way.
- 1:28:01For me, it's like the distance I'll run a marathon every week.
- 1:28:05I mean, every day nearly is a 40K of volume.
- 1:28:08Like during peaks dust. It's like that's not the issue.
- 1:28:11It's being a run at the pace for the distance.
- 1:28:14And that's where I'm feel like I'm getting more and more
- 1:28:16confident now. See, I say.
- 1:28:18It's gone up. Can we commit to a number?
- 1:28:22What did I say? I said 74.
- 1:28:31It's 10. Percent increase.
- 1:28:34All your fans on Strava probably think you're back down to 3%
- 1:28:37because you haven't uploaded. I got gotta keep the the roller
- 1:28:41coaster ride guy in gotta keep them the waiting.
- 1:28:45Just teasing the people all. Right, that's class, boys.
- 1:28:50Well, Jake Smith, best of luck for the weekend, do the fellas.
- 1:28:54Good luck with the continued trainer.
- 1:28:57Yeah. Thank you very much and good
- 1:28:58luck, Jake. Cheers.
- 1:29:00Thank you very much. I want to watch that.
- 1:29:03That's got to be on, surely? If you catch 1 Jason on your
- 1:29:08story. I can, I can tell you what's
- 1:29:09going to happen. It's going to be meaning for 20K
- 1:29:12and then three guys go past, that's what's going to happen.
- 1:29:14So you don't need a video of that.
- 1:29:19Why don't you get a pair of the meta glasses and you can stream
- 1:29:22it live from your head? Now turn them off at 20 K Throw
- 1:29:26them before the race was done. All right, cheers lads.
- 1:29:32Yeah, talk to you guys later. Thanks fellas.
- 1:29:35Good stuff about. A Sunday still chasing pee pees
- 1:29:38while the wheel spins round miles in the bank.
- 1:29:40Heart rate low. Big dreams but we take it slow.
