- 0:00Hey guys, welcome back to the Becoming Anchor podcast.
- 0:03So glad that you're here with us today.
- 0:06Uh, just to reintroduce ourselves, I'm Lauren Jackson and this is Laura Denine.
- 0:10We're two therapists in the Britwood area, um, just south of Nashville.
- 0:15We, um.
- 0:17Work in a group private practice, uh, with eight other therapists.
- 0:21We adore what we do.
- 0:23Um, we see all kinds of different presentations all through the
- 0:26lifespan and, um, we really are just so glad to be here and kind of
- 0:31expanding our reach a little bit.
- 0:33So, welcome and, um, hope you enjoyed today's episode.
- 0:37Yeah, thanks Lauren.
- 0:39So today we are gonna be talking about practicing authenticity
- 0:43in our everyday lives.
- 0:45Um, this is actually one of my values that really guides the decisions that I
- 0:50make and how I choose to spend my time and who I choose to spend my time with.
- 0:54So I love the idea of.
- 0:57Practicing authenticity.
- 0:59Um, here on the podcast, we're all about first and foremost
- 1:02being real with you guys.
- 1:04Um, we are humans before we are therapists, and so we really
- 1:08are just here to share our real life stories and experiences.
- 1:11Of course.
- 1:12We can also offer that therapeutic lens of some of the wisdom that we've
- 1:17gleaned over the years in practice.
- 1:19Um, but yeah, we're here to just do this life with y'all and to share,
- 1:24um, from an honest, authentic place.
- 1:26So that's really the purpose of the Becoming Anchored podcast.
- 1:29If you're here for the first time, um, Lauren and I'll both be sharing
- 1:32about our experiences and then at the end of every episode, we.
- 1:36Are going to be giving y'all an affirmation along with further homework
- 1:40that you can be working on just to further your own, um, kind of experience and
- 1:45introspection, um, and hopefully a chance for each of you to practice authenticity.
- 1:50Yeah, thanks Laura.
- 1:51A quick disclaimer, so we say this at every episode, um, but this is really
- 1:56meant for informational purposes only.
- 1:58This isn't meant to, um, be therapy in any way or replace your therapy.
- 2:03Um, so if as you're listening you find that you would benefit from
- 2:07your own personal therapy journey.
- 2:10Either reach out to us, we'd love to work with you, or, um, if you're not
- 2:14local, find somebody local near you.
- 2:32Gosh, I remember the first, one of the first sessions I had with.
- 2:38My therapist who treated me actually for my eating disorder, gosh, I wanna say
- 2:4212 or 13 years ago now, I'll always hold such a special place in my heart for her.
- 2:49Um, and I remember she looked at me and she was like, what are your values?
- 2:53And I remember thinking, what is a value?
- 2:56Um, and then we did some values work.
- 2:59It's actually a wonderful part of acceptance, commitment therapy.
- 3:02And I didn't know that then, but that's what we were doing.
- 3:04And, um.
- 3:05I really honed in on this value of authenticity as being
- 3:09one of my top five values.
- 3:13Um, and I can't remember all the ins and outs of what led me to choose that
- 3:18as one of my top five values, but I do remember that process and that was so
- 3:24formative for my therapeutic journey.
- 3:28Um, I know that what I was trying to achieve through my body or.
- 3:32Through the eating disorder did not feel authentic.
- 3:36And so I know that part of my recovery process was practicing authenticity
- 3:41and showing up well, both for myself and other people in a way that was like
- 3:44honest and true to my authentic self.
- 3:47Um, so yeah, when I, when I thought about doing this episode, I was like, oh gosh, I
- 3:51have to share that story just because that was such a formative time in my life when
- 3:56I identified the value of authenticity.
- 3:59Um.
- 4:00So I love the topic of authenticity.
- 4:02There's so many things that I could say about authenticity that I think you guys
- 4:08would probably resonate with as listeners.
- 4:09So Lauren, I don't know if you have any story like that or if something
- 4:12comes to mind for you when you think about the word authenticity, um,
- 4:16and what it actually means for you.
- 4:18I'd love to hear your working definition of it.
- 4:22The most basic thing that comes to mind that perhaps
- 4:26some of us would feel is like.
- 4:28A bit cliché is being yourself, right?
- 4:32And, and then that kind of begs the question, well what does that mean?
- 4:36And how do we know who we are?
- 4:39And, um, I think one of the things that feels significant, um, to
- 4:47myself as a therapist and just my therapeutic style, if you will, is um.
- 4:55That being pretty foundational in the work that I'm doing with my clients,
- 4:59whatever the, whatever they're presenting with and whatever the goals
- 5:03are and the work is that we're doing.
- 5:05Really ultimately, my, my goal and kind of hope for my clients is, is
- 5:12to help them come back to themselves.
- 5:14So when I think of authenticity, that's, I, I think of coming back to self.
- 5:19Uh, and then again, that begs the question, what does that mean?
- 5:23Right?
- 5:23And that that means a lot of different things for a lot of different people.
- 5:28And, um, so, so other words that come to mind are core self, um, you know,
- 5:39uh, uh, I don't know, inner self.
- 5:43Um, the part of us that is unchanging.
- 5:49Um, and all of those things are, um, particularly as adults.
- 5:56And if you're not an adult and you're listening, that's okay.
- 5:59And if you are great, um, part of our adulthood I think means probably
- 6:06for most of us to some extent.
- 6:09I don't wanna over generalize too much, but that probably means being, um.
- 6:17Uh, kind of a little bit far away from maybe core self, inner self, authentic
- 6:24self because life, like, because of the things that we experience in life
- 6:30that are painful and that hurt us and that maybe traumatize us, um, because
- 6:38we're human, because we walk through life and things happen that hurt us.
- 6:44That tends to grow distance between authentic core self and
- 6:52the ways that we kind of show up and operate in our day-to-day life.
- 6:56So learning to live authentically as an adult can be really, really hard.
- 7:03Um, so that was all kind of this a big thing that I just said.
- 7:07I know your question was, what does, what does authenticity mean to you?
- 7:11So.
- 7:12Long story short, I feel like it means coming back to self, coming
- 7:17back to core self and, and with a caveat of that can be really,
- 7:23really hard to do as an adult still.
- 7:25Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 7:28There's a therapy that I know that you are really, really used frequently.
- 7:32I, I definitely use some of it as well, but it's called Internal Family
- 7:36Systems, and as you were talking, what stood out to me was this idea of these.
- 7:42What we call protector parts.
- 7:44So these parts of ourselves that develop really from a young age and.
- 7:49They're protectors because we think falsely right?
- 7:53We falsely think that they will protect us from experiencing pain or shame or
- 7:58hurt or fear or whatever it might be.
- 8:01And so, uh, when, when you said that that came to that therapeutic style came to me
- 8:06or that, that therapeutic modality just in all of these parts that we develop to.
- 8:12Kind of hide our true selves, if that makes sense to y'all.
- 8:16Um, and I know that you can speak a little bit more to internal family systems as you
- 8:20practice it quite frequently with clients.
- 8:23Um, but when I think about my own parts that prevent me from being
- 8:27authentic or that have prevented me in the past from being authentic,
- 8:31a couple things are coming to mind.
- 8:33So one is image management.
- 8:35So what I mean by that is it's the part of me that thinks that
- 8:38I need to appear a certain way.
- 8:41So for those of y'all that are.
- 8:43You know, Enneagram gurus, I'm a three on the Enneagram, so threes can
- 8:47also struggle with this, but this, how are other people perceiving me?
- 8:51And so when I'm in a place of unhealth, caring more about that versus what my
- 8:56values are or what I actually believe, and knowing why I believe those things
- 9:00can be become more important to me.
- 9:01And that can actually prevent me from living from a place of authenticity.
- 9:05Um, so the image management really sticks out to me.
- 9:09In terms of something that gets in the way of me practicing authenticity.
- 9:14The good news though, is I've done quite a bit of therapy at this point, and I'm
- 9:17by no means perfect at it, but when it's happening, I know that it's happening
- 9:21and I know, okay, how can I catch it?
- 9:24What do I need to do to get to kind of quiet this part?
- 9:28What does this part need?
- 9:29Does it need comfort?
- 9:30Does it need, um, does it, do I just need to name that it's there and that I'm
- 9:34trying to image manage myself right now?
- 9:37Um.
- 9:38And can I risk putting my true self out there, even if that means I'm
- 9:42not accepted, even if that means that not everyone loves me, even if that
- 9:46means that it feels really vulnerable.
- 9:49Um, so yeah, that therapy, if you guys haven't heard of it, look into it.
- 9:54It's a wonderful modality, internal family systems.
- 9:57Um, but I think of these protector parts, so to speak, in air
- 10:00quotations that get in the way of.
- 10:03Us practicing authenticity.
- 10:05And for me, image management, you could also call it like perfectionism.
- 10:10Um, get in the way of practicing authenticity.
- 10:13Yeah.
- 10:14I, oh my gosh.
- 10:15I can say, uh, so many things are like coming up and popping
- 10:18in my head as you're talking.
- 10:20Sure.
- 10:20Um, I, so when it comes to, you know, living authentically, living
- 10:28an authentic life, showing up authentically in relationships.
- 10:32Um, two, two kind of models of therapy come up for me when I'm
- 10:44thinking about like working with a client as we're like strengthening
- 10:47their ability to do this or whatever.
- 10:50Um, and those are IFS and act.
- 10:52So internal family systems like Laura was mentioning, and then act
- 10:56acceptance and commitment therapy.
- 10:58So I, I, I feel like, you know, when it comes to finding our authentic self,
- 11:04connecting with our authentic self, there's some, like, there are several
- 11:09different, perhaps, I don't know, steps is the right word, or ingredients or
- 11:14skills or whatnot that kind of are really important to put into place to help make.
- 11:22The movement back to self the most, I don't know, like effective or
- 11:32insert whatever word you want there.
- 11:34Um, so some of those things being first just having awareness, just, you know, in
- 11:41internal awareness, insight into like your internal process of feelings and emotions
- 11:48and thoughts and physical sensations.
- 11:51And then yeah, having awareness of your values.
- 11:54Right.
- 11:54And just kind of circling back around to the values work piece of things.
- 11:58I was actually with a client once and we were doing some act work.
- 12:04We were just talking about values and she, I, I bet this can resonate with,
- 12:10with some, a lot of you guys listening.
- 12:12I know it came for me.
- 12:14She was struggling with knowing what she valued and she felt a lot of shame.
- 12:19For that.
- 12:21Um, she, she felt like she should know what she values as an adult,
- 12:28as an, as an almost thirty-year-old.
- 12:29She felt like she hadn't put in the work to, to really have awareness of that.
- 12:37And so, um, we kind of back backed up a little bit and first really just validated
- 12:45A, That makes a lot of sense because.
- 12:48I don't know if we, you know, are spending a lot of time every day
- 12:53making lists of our values and thinking about that in a really, you
- 12:57know, in-depth, introspective way.
- 12:59I don't do that every day and B, the word value and, and knowing what we
- 13:08value or having values seems like this.
- 13:12Kind of obvious thing.
- 13:14And it's really, really, really hard work to know what you got.
- 13:18Like, it's, it's hard.
- 13:19It can be really hard, deep, uncomfortable work to do.
- 13:25And so those two things felt really important in that moment to, um,
- 13:31name and highlight for her and, and.
- 13:35I, because I resonated with it even when and when she was going
- 13:39through that process in the session.
- 13:41And I can imagine that that would perhaps be an experience that
- 13:45some people have listening here.
- 13:46So, so yeah, identifying, um, or first having awareness and then, and
- 13:53then doing some values work around identifying what your values are.
- 13:56And then, like Laura said, um, figuring out maybe what is getting in the way of.
- 14:03You living in those values that you do have.
- 14:08Um, and if we're looking at that from kind of the IFS lens or that
- 14:16model, then typically what does get in the way are these parts of us.
- 14:21Like Laura said, that are trying really hard to protect us from feeling
- 14:25pain and from hurting and from really anything that we have experienced in
- 14:31life up until now that has caused some kind of rupture or some kind of harm.
- 14:36Um, so it's really quite a clever thing that our bodies do to try and help us.
- 14:44Feel okay and feel safe.
- 14:46And then what we find as adults is that, um, they, these, these parts of us,
- 14:53um, actually kind of get in the way a little bit more than they are helpful.
- 14:57Um, I.
- 14:59And so within IFS internal family system, so we call this parts
- 15:04language and, um, these parts of us that protect, they're either our
- 15:10firefighter parts or our manager parts.
- 15:13And these two different parts, we, we don't have to get into all the
- 15:17nitty-gritty of it, but essentially, yeah, they, they are kind of these
- 15:20overdeveloped is what we call it, dysfunctional parts that, that wanna
- 15:24protect us and swoop in and save the day.
- 15:27And, um.
- 15:28For a while.
- 15:29They work for a while.
- 15:32It does.
- 15:32They do help until, until we start seeing how they don't, until we start
- 15:38realizing, oh, I'm, I'm showing up in all of these places in my life so
- 15:42far from being like true to myself.
- 15:45I'm, I'm just such this people pleaser and I bend over backwards for everyone and I
- 15:50just find at the end of every day I am.
- 15:52So just, um.
- 15:56Just exhausted and I'm so wiped and I have no energy and I'm completely
- 16:00drained because I've just been doing everything everybody else wants me to
- 16:03do and I've completely ignored myself.
- 16:06We kind of come to these, this kind of crossroads of, um, okay,
- 16:11now something's gotta change.
- 16:12And that's usually what we see people come in our office.
- 16:14Um, and then we started this kind of work with them.
- 16:17And so, um, so, so yeah, just identifying what is getting in the way of.
- 16:25Of being authentic, living in those values.
- 16:29So then within the ACT world, the Acceptance and commitment therapy
- 16:33world, we identify those values.
- 16:36Um, and again, we, we are figuring out what is getting in the way of
- 16:42us living in those values and that we're, we're, we're establishing, um.
- 16:50Uh, really practical, like action steps that we can take daily to
- 16:54live within that value system.
- 16:57Um, and that can look like anything from, um, you know, reaching out
- 17:06to, you know, a, a friend once a week to, um, I don't know.
- 17:16Practicing more mindfulness throughout the day.
- 17:21Right.
- 17:22Um, so I'm curious, Laura, I know that you said that your therapist really
- 17:31helped you identify what your values are.
- 17:34What, what else, what else helps you know, what you value?
- 17:38Like how do you know what, what, what you value in life?
- 17:43I.
- 17:44Yeah, I mean, I think another way of thinking about values is asking
- 17:48myself what's important to me.
- 17:50Um, and so my family and friends obviously, um, you know, so these
- 17:57things guide how I spend my time and energy, um, transparency, and that
- 18:02can be really interchangeable with.
- 18:04Authenticity as well.
- 18:05But you know, that that really helps me kind of hone in on what my values
- 18:12are, is asking myself what is important to me and being honest with myself.
- 18:16So that's another piece about authenticity.
- 18:19Me being authentic and my true self, maybe different than someone else's
- 18:24version of authenticity, because we may believe different things.
- 18:28It's not so much about what we believe it's are we showing up?
- 18:32In our truest self.
- 18:34So do we have the courage to show up in an authentic way and not shame
- 18:39ourselves, not criticize ourselves.
- 18:42Um, but yeah, I mean, really asking myself what's important to me, um, has been so
- 18:48huge just in terms of me figuring out how I spend my time, what I value, and then,
- 18:53you know, of course how those behaviors.
- 18:56Inform what I, what I choose to do.
- 18:59Um, but yeah.
- 19:00It's interesting as we're talking through this concept of authenticity, one piece of
- 19:06kind of, I just keep circling back to this one thing of I know that as I have healed
- 19:11and gone through recovery and had therapy and gone to my own therapy over the years,
- 19:16and as I sit with clients when they heal.
- 19:20When we become more authentic, we are naturally drawn to people
- 19:23that are authentic as well.
- 19:25So it's interesting because at when we're, when we're living out of, of a
- 19:29place of inauthenticity or when we're not living, you know, in a way that is
- 19:34connected to our true selves, then we might be drawn to those type of people.
- 19:39But as we become more congruent, so what I mean by that is our insides
- 19:42matching our outside behaviors.
- 19:45We're naturally drawn to people that are that way as well.
- 19:49Right.
- 19:49And that's not to say that we have to be friends with people who
- 19:52only think like us or who share the same values, but authenticity
- 19:57is like drawn to authenticity.
- 19:59So what I mean by that is people in my life that I cherish are
- 20:03also able to be authentic, right?
- 20:06And that's not that, that's not me saying that they're perfect,
- 20:08but they practice authenticity.
- 20:11Like Lauren was saying.
- 20:12It's that daily kind of practice and daily choice.
- 20:15Um, so that's an interesting note that I just wanted to validate that if.
- 20:19If y'all have had relationship shift over time, I wonder if some of it might
- 20:23be as you're doing the healing work that therapy requires, if, if you're naturally
- 20:28drawn to people that are more authentic.
- 20:30Um, you know, um, I certainly am not trying to criticize people that are
- 20:35inauthentic, but I know it can kind of put a bad taste in my mouth when I am
- 20:38around someone that maybe I, I know is kind of in, in their protective part.
- 20:46Um.
- 20:47It can kind of just put a bad taste in my mouth and that might
- 20:51be a judgment on my own behalf.
- 20:54Um, but it's just interesting because I know as I've gotten healthier,
- 20:59I'm naturally drawn to people that are able to be authentic, able to be
- 21:02vulnerable, able, able to be honest, not only with themselves, but with me.
- 21:07Um, so that's just something interesting that I wanted to.
- 21:10Just came up as you were talking.
- 21:11Lauren.
- 21:15Lauren has some homework for y'all.
- 21:16Lauren, if you wanna go ahead and get the homework.
- 21:19Yeah.
- 21:19Yep, yep.
- 21:20So, a lot of things that we've already talked about today.
- 21:22I wanna challenge you all to pay attention to where you notice
- 21:28you are your most authentic self.
- 21:29Who, who do you feel the safest to be your.
- 21:33Most true self with why?
- 21:37Why does it feel that way?
- 21:38And then where in your life, what spaces and people maybe does it feel the hardest
- 21:43to show up, the most authentically, the most vulnerably, if you will.
- 21:49And then, and then a step from that would be what, what is
- 21:55getting in the way perhaps?
- 21:56What are some of those like protective parts showing up for you?
- 22:00Um, and.
- 22:03What can you do to move towards more authenticity in those?
- 22:07In those settings.
- 22:09So as we wrap, we hope this has been helpful for y'all.
- 22:13Um, we wanted to close with an affirmation or really kind of a
- 22:17quote from the amazing Brene Brown.
- 22:20So some of you probably know her if you don't, definitely look her up.
- 22:24She is.
- 22:25Just lovely.
- 22:27Um, she talks about authenticity, so something kind of along the lines of
- 22:32what Lauren was talking about, but she says that authenticity is not
- 22:35something that we have or don't have.
- 22:36It's a practice, a conscious choice of how we want to live.
- 22:40Authenticity is a collection of choices that we have to make every day.
- 22:44It's about the choice.
- 22:44To show up and be real.
- 22:46The choice to be honest, the choice to let our true selves be seen.
