- Intro: WCCO Radio 1924 Launch: The High-Risk Airwave Gamble Late September 1924 brings a quiet, uneasy stillness across the Twin Cities. Inside rural farm parlors and city living rooms, primitive home crystal radio sets hiss with empty static. Wireless radiotelephony remains an unproven, high-risk technical frontier. Commercial broadcasting possesses no established revenue model, making early radio stations speculative money pits. At Saint Anthony Falls, corporate executives at the Washburn-Crosby Milling Company face a high-stakes dilemma. They can allow the local airwaves to remain dark and silent. Or they can take a massive gamble on an unproven electromagnetic frequency, funded directly by Saint Anthony Falls flour milling. It is a high-stakes bet that invisible radio waves can transform isolated Midwest agricultural communities into a unified, fiercely loyal regional lifeline. Act I: The Silence of the Aether: WLAG's Collapse and the Birth of WCCO The crash comes without warning on July 31, 1924. Inside the Oak Grove Hotel near Loring Park, pioneer radio station WLAG completes a routine weather report. Then, the signal cuts out completely. The station has run out of operating cash. Its 500-watt transmitter falls dead silent. That sudden silence creates immediate panic across the Midwest. Isolated farmers in Minnesota and the Dakotas depend on daily wireless market reports and crop bulletins to sell their grain. Trade association records indicate that city residents and rural families alike are suddenly cut off from vital daily news. Promoter, Harry Wilbern steps into the emergency. The Northwest Radio Trade Association tasks him with finding a commercial savior for the dead station. Wilbern knocks on corporate doors across Minneapolis and Saint Paul. He meets repeatedly with skeptical business leaders who view radio as an expensive, money-losing gimmick. He finally finds a vision inside the offices of the Washburn-Crosby Milling Company. Executives Donald D. Davis and James Ford Bell see an unprecedented opportunity. They realize that controlling a powerful radio signal will allow them to promote Gold Medal Flour directly into consumer homes. Washburn-Crosby moves with aggressive speed. Company records document that they purchase WLAG’s bankrupt physical assets for $7,500. They pledge an initial $100,000 in capital, plus $50,000 annually for three years to build state-of-the-art facilities. Federal regulators quickly grant new call letters to mark the takeover: WCCO, standing directly for Washburn-Crosby Company. Engine room crews uncrate heavy Western Electric equipment at the Oak Grove Hotel to restore temporary broadcasts. A dead frequency is officially reclaimed to launch the greatest commercial broadcasting experiment in Midwest history. Act II: October 2, 1924: WCCO Launches the Dual Airwave Experiment On October 2, 1924, technical ambition meets corporate risk in downtown Minneapolis. WCCO officially signs on from its new studio suite on the 12th and 13th floors of the Nicollet Hotel. Control room engineers flip heavy brass switches behind glass panels. Outside, listeners across the Upper Midwest strain to tune their primitive crystal sets past the crackling static. Inaugural addresses ring out across the airwaves. World Fliers Commander Lieutenant Lowell Smith speaks to the region after completing his historic global circumnavigation. But the day’s most radical experiment happens during the daylight hours. Home economist Blanche Ingersoll steps up to the carbon microphone. She launches the Betty Crocker Home Service Program, daytime radio's very first cooking show. Washburn-Crosby is betting that an invented persona can build genuine listener loyalty. Listeners tune in, take detailed notes, and mail back recipe reports for formal grading. The dual experiment of high-power radio and interactive content immediately catches fire. Out in Anoka Township near Highway 10, heavy construction begins. Work crews pour massive concrete footings in the Coon Rapids farmland. They erect two 200-foot steel aerial towers and install a 5,000-watt Western Electric transmitter. Dedicated, conditioned telephone circuits carry pristine audio directly from the Nicollet Hotel control board out to the rural towers. By late 1925, WCCO’s bold gamble reshapes the entire broadcasting landscape. Station records confirm the program expands to 13 regional markets. Local women in distant cities read identical scripts written at the Minneapolis home office. A local flour mill’s risk has officially turned raw wireless technology into an indispensable regional utility. Act III: WCCO 50,000-Watt Clear Channel: The Wheaties Jingle & 654-Foot Tower On Christmas Eve in 1926, commercial history changes forever inside WCCO's Nicollet Hotel studio. Four local workingmen, a municipal court bailiff, a grain clerk, a printer, and an undertaker, step up to the microphone as a singing quartet. They sing a catchy, fifteen-minute musical commercial for a struggling new cereal made from whole-wheat flakes. That broadcast marks the world's very first singing radio commercial: the famous "Wheaties Jingle." The immediate flood of grocery store purchases saves Wheaties from being pulled from production, proving that sponsored radio entertainment drives retail sales. WCCO continues pushing the physical limits of broadcasting technology. On November 11, 1928, the Federal Radio Commission issues General Order 40. Federal records indicate that WCCO earns exclusive clear-channel status, granting it sole rights to broadcast on its assigned frequency, 830 AM. Power upgrades follow rapidly. By September 1932, WCCO expands its Coon Rapids facility to broadcast at 50,000 watts, the maximum power licensed in the United States. Massive water-cooled vacuum tubes hum day and night. In 1939, construction crews erect a giant 654-foot vertical radiator antenna tower in Coon Rapids, standing 200 feet taller than the famous Foshay Tower in Minneapolis. That 50,000-watt signal bounces off the ionosphere, spanning entire continents. Station archives record that listeners routinely pick up 830 AM across twenty-eight states and central Canada. According to military service logs, legendary station personality Howard Viken even picked up WCCO's clear-channel signal while deployed at Guadalcanal in the South Pacific during World War II. By April 1945, Fortune magazine ranks on-air personality Betty Crocker as the second best-known woman in America, trailing only First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. The high-risk airwave experiment has officially created a cultural colossus. Act IV: The Lifeline in the Storm: WCCO Radio’s Emergency Weather Supremacy As AM radio dominance expands, technical reach turns into urgent civic responsibility. WCCO evolves from a commercial experiment into the primary emergency lifeline for millions across the Upper Midwest. Isolated farm families and urban neighborhoods look to 830 AM when destructive weather threatens life and property. Engineers and on-air staff carry a heavy burden. They maintain continuous, round-the-clock broadcasts through paralyzing blizzards, historic river floods, and sudden summer severe weather outbreaks. To signal immediate danger, station technicians engineer a distinct acoustic warning. They place a heavy glass ashtray directly on top of a bulk magnetic tape degaussing machine. The resulting vibration creates WCCO’s infamous, jarring "klaxon" alert tone. When that harsh sound pierces the airwaves, listeners across Minnesota instantly drop everything to take shelter. The ultimate test arrives on May 6, 1965. A catastrophic severe weather outbreak slams the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Station records document that six tornadoes touch down across the Twin Cities region and nearby counties, while radar operators track twenty-four separate hook echoes. WCCO announcers stay on air live for hours, tracking vortex sightings directly from phone calls submitted by terrified eyewitnesses. Public service records show that WCCO’s continuous coverage during the 1965 St. Patrick's Day blizzard, April river floods, and May tornadoes earns the station prestigious Peabody, DuPont, and Sigma Delta Chi awards. Beloved regional personalities like Cedric Adams, Halsey Hall, Charlie Boone, and Roger Erickson permanently solidify WCCO's reputation as the undisputed "Good Neighbor to the Northwest." Conclusion: The Voice That Bound the Midwest: WCCO's 100-Year Legacy On October 2, 1924, a group of Minneapolis flour millers took a massive corporate gamble on an unproven wireless technology. They spent over thirteen times the liquidated purchase price of a dead hotel station to construct a high-power utility that transformed how information moved across the American continent. What began as a 500-watt hotel experiment grew into a 50,000-watt clear-channel powerhouse. That single station defined Midwest regional identity, saved lives during catastrophic severe weather, and brought millions of isolated families into a shared human experience. The story of WCCO proves that cutting-edge technology only finds its true purpose when it serves the human community. That single station remains a living monument to the moment Minnesota pioneers tamed the invisible airwaves and gave an entire region its enduring voice.
