- 0:00Doing Marriage Well for October 7th, 2026 Hyper-Focus and Half-Listeners How
- 0:06to Actually Reach Your Spouse I told it myself yesterday, so today it's Lori's turn.
- 0:11My wife gets hyper-focused on whatever she's doing. That's nice when I'm involved
- 0:16in what she's doing, but it can result in her missing things I need her to hear.
- 0:20What makes it worse is she says, uh-huh, when she is focused on something else.
- 0:25Once, when I knew she was not hearing me, I confessed to an affair with the
- 0:29elderly lady across the street.
- 0:31It wasn't until I lost it laughing that she stopped and said, what did I agree to?
- 0:35Here's the thing. I know she does this. I think that puts it on me to make sure
- 0:40she is really hearing me when I say something important.
- 0:43She's been this way for 42 years, and there is no reason to think she will change.
- 0:47So I choose to be responsible for making sure she hears me.
- 0:51The issue is not blame. It's making it work. How could you make it easier for
- 0:55your spouse to focus when you need to tell them something.
- 0:58Pick your time wisely, not when they're busy or stressed.
- 1:02Ask if it's a good time to talk. Politely ask them to put down what they're
- 1:06doing. Get to the point quickly.
- 1:09Make the main concern known early in the conversation. If you're asking for
- 1:13something, ask for it clearly.
- 1:16How can you prove your focus on your spouse? The same list applies,
- 1:20but you may have to work to get some of them.
- 1:22Perhaps you need to discuss focus traps over coffee sometime.
- 1:26This is Paul, and focus can be a double-edged sword.
