Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello.
- 0:01Speaker 2: My name's Sanatasha Nabananga Bamblet. I'm a proud yr the Order,
- 0:05Speaker 2: Kernie Whoalbury and a waddery woman. And before we get
- 0:08Speaker 2: started on She's on the Money podcast, I would like
- 0:11Speaker 2: to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land of which
- 0:14Speaker 2: this podcast is recorded on a wondery country, acknowledging the elders,
- 0:19Speaker 2: the ancestors and the next generation coming through as this
- 0:23Speaker 2: podcast is about connecting, empowering, knowledge sharing and the storytelling
- 0:28Speaker 2: of you to make a difference for today and lasting
- 0:31Speaker 2: impact for tomorrow.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Let's get into it.
- 0:34Speaker 3: She's on the Money, She's on the Money.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to George. Last episode of Friday Drinks.
- 1:04Speaker 4: If we're going to screw up the start, it's gonna
- 1:06Speaker 4: be for something good.
- 1:08Speaker 1: And this is it. I mean it's not good, but
- 1:09Speaker 1: we're sad. It's crazy.
- 1:12Speaker 5: We're happy for you, yeah, sending you off with support
- 1:15Speaker 5: and love, but very sad to see you go.
- 1:16Speaker 4: Let me do the proper intro them well, yeah, God,
- 1:19Speaker 4: Hello and welcomes On the Money the podcast Millennials who
- 1:23Speaker 4: want financial freedom. You guys already know because it's Friday
- 1:26Speaker 4: and we're in your ears that it is time to
- 1:28Speaker 4: sit back with Jess, George and I for the last
- 1:31Speaker 4: time to do a Friday Drinks episode. It has been
- 1:34Speaker 4: an absolute joy. We're not going anywhere, just nice daying,
- 1:37Speaker 4: but we're just sad to lose our power, you know,
- 1:39Speaker 4: like we'll still hang out at brunch, but she's just
- 1:41Speaker 4: not going to come to recording. But on this episode,
- 1:44Speaker 4: we get to unpack our favorite moments of the week,
- 1:46Speaker 4: and we also get to celebrate our community, which is
- 1:48Speaker 4: our favorite thing in the entire world. We're going to
- 1:51Speaker 4: share our favorite money wins or George for the very
- 1:53Speaker 4: last time, is going to share her roundup of the
- 1:56Speaker 4: money wins and confessions from the community. We're going to
- 1:58Speaker 4: discuss what's making news in the fun world, and I
- 2:00Speaker 4: believe it involves chatting about Balley, which I think is
- 2:03Speaker 4: just genuinely George's idea of gloating about a holiday she
- 2:06Speaker 4: recently went on. And we're going to be answering a
- 2:08Speaker 4: juicy money question about loans and debt.
- 2:10Speaker 1: But before we jump into all.
- 2:12Speaker 4: Of that, let's recap the week that was Miss Jess Gricci.
- 2:15Speaker 4: What happened on our Monday show.
- 2:17Speaker 5: This week's Diarist was an interesting one. We were talking
- 2:20Speaker 5: all about her experience with IVS, which is something we
- 2:23Speaker 5: get asked about actually quite a bit on the podcast,
- 2:26Speaker 5: so it was really cool to see a little bit
- 2:29Speaker 5: more into her journey. She spent over a hundred thousand
- 2:32Speaker 5: dollars on IVF and she has three beautiful children now,
- 2:35Speaker 5: which is just incredible. She said that she grew up
- 2:38Speaker 5: not talking about money a whole lot, so it was
- 2:41Speaker 5: really interesting to hear about how that journey kind of impacted,
- 2:45Speaker 5: how she managed to get one hundred thousand dollars to
- 2:48Speaker 5: spend and how she's then managing that as a parent
- 2:50Speaker 5: of three, which is definitely not a cheap experience to
- 2:53Speaker 5: be having.
- 2:54Speaker 1: And Georgia King what happened on our Wednesday show.
- 2:57Speaker 6: On Wednesday, we spoke all about about tenants rightsphae D,
- 3:02Speaker 6: which was super juicy because the majority of people in
- 3:05Speaker 6: the Shees on the Money community are renters. Based on
- 3:08Speaker 6: the data, we know that to be true. We thought
- 3:11Speaker 6: it was time and we've also had a lot of
- 3:12Speaker 6: messages asking for it to do an episode on what
- 3:15Speaker 6: our rights actually are as tenants, and it was so interesting.
- 3:20Speaker 6: I've had a few chats with Jess this year, who
- 3:23Speaker 6: previously worked in property, and she had so many insights
- 3:26Speaker 6: for me as to how mistreated I was being as
- 3:30Speaker 6: a little tenant.
- 3:31Speaker 4: Yeah, you've both had a rough go of it this year,
- 3:34Speaker 4: but I least so everyone. Yes, I think that I
- 3:37Speaker 4: own a property. We moved out while we renovated.
- 3:41Speaker 5: Not grace.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Interesting.
- 3:44Speaker 4: Interesting, I'm honest to god, I probably should be asking
- 3:47Speaker 4: for a refund for most of that rent, but I
- 3:48Speaker 4: haven't done that.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Ye.
- 3:49Speaker 6: So Yeah, if you are someone who rents, it's a
- 3:53Speaker 6: really good episode because we go through everything from like
- 3:56Speaker 6: bond returns to how often and how much your landlord
- 4:00Speaker 6: can increase your rent by. There was just so so
- 4:03Speaker 6: much detail in there, so I'd really recommend it if
- 4:05Speaker 6: you are someone who rents, if you know someone who rents,
- 4:08Speaker 6: really good episode for that.
- 4:09Speaker 5: And while there is definitely some national rules, which is
- 4:11Speaker 5: what you guys covered, it also varies a lot state
- 4:13Speaker 5: by state, so we cannot recommend it enough. If you
- 4:17Speaker 5: feel like you're being taken advantage of, or even if
- 4:19Speaker 5: you just feel like something's a little bit not kosher,
- 4:22Speaker 5: a little bit off, jump on your state government website,
- 4:24Speaker 5: because I can guarantee you that there will be a
- 4:26Speaker 5: tenant or a rental or some kind of governing body
- 4:29Speaker 5: that will have all of the laws that are applicable
- 4:31Speaker 5: to your state. Jump on there, know what's right and
- 4:34Speaker 5: wrong because if something is wrong, you can do something
- 4:36Speaker 5: about it.
- 4:37Speaker 4: Yeah, and I know that this is not like the
- 4:39Speaker 4: most linear recommendation. It totally is linear, but I think
- 4:42Speaker 4: not the most kosher recommendation because you can't take anything
- 4:45Speaker 4: that you get in a Facebook group as gospel. But
- 4:47Speaker 4: pop on over to the Property Playbook group and you
- 4:50Speaker 4: can post your question in there if you're just not sure,
- 4:52Speaker 4: because those.
- 4:53Speaker 1: People are passionate about property.
- 4:55Speaker 4: And I have seen so many people jump in and
- 4:56Speaker 4: be like, all right, Georgia, sit down, So these are
- 4:58Speaker 4: your rights. This is the research done before I had
- 5:00Speaker 4: this exact issue, and they can kind of point you
- 5:02Speaker 4: in the right direction.
- 5:04Speaker 1: And I feel like they're really supportive.
- 5:05Speaker 4: So if you are a bit worried, like one, search
- 5:08Speaker 4: that group first, because I guarantee a question similar has
- 5:11Speaker 4: probably been asked already. But two definitely popperty and if
- 5:14Speaker 4: it hasn't, so head on over there. All right, Georgia King,
- 5:17Speaker 4: It's time for our budget direct money wins and Confessions
- 5:19Speaker 4: of the week.
- 5:19Speaker 1: What have you got for us?
- 5:20Speaker 6: So the first one it comes from Ashley Money Win,
- 5:24Speaker 6: a construction company. It's spilt cement dust all over my car.
- 5:28Speaker 6: That doesn't sound like a win and I got to.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Pay out worth more than the vehicle itself. Oh my gosh.
- 5:33Speaker 5: Yes, that's actually really funny because a friend of mine
- 5:36Speaker 5: works in construction and he worked on a site in
- 5:39Speaker 5: the CBD and he was telling me that it's a
- 5:42Speaker 5: big building.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Through your friend did it.
- 5:45Speaker 5: There's heaps of crews working at once, and he said
- 5:47Speaker 5: he saw the concretes, like just somehow lose control of
- 5:51Speaker 5: this big funnel thing that's spraying concrete and all over
- 5:54Speaker 5: the road. I wonder if that's the same people.
- 5:57Speaker 1: It could have been the same incident in your friend.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Our community's next money win.
- 6:02Speaker 6: The next win it comes from Kimberly Small money Win.
- 6:05Speaker 6: I finally got my Canva account canceled and the fees
- 6:10Speaker 6: refunded for the last few months. Try and say Canva
- 6:13Speaker 6: account canceled fast? Yeah, I didn't know you had to
- 6:16Speaker 6: pay for Canva?
- 6:17Speaker 1: Is that for like a like a pro subscription?
- 6:20Speaker 4: We have one because we make a lot of our
- 6:22Speaker 4: convat but why did we want to refund it? Was
- 6:27Speaker 4: there any more information or she'd just been working towards
- 6:29Speaker 4: this goal and actually canceled it because she wasn't using it.
- 6:32Speaker 6: I think that's that's all all right. That's a that's
- 6:34Speaker 6: a good tip on your Kimberly. The next weein, it
- 6:36Speaker 6: comes from Kira money Win. KitchenAid mixes went on clearance
- 6:41Speaker 6: at the Good Guys Clearance and I managed to pick
- 6:43Speaker 6: up my dream mixer for two hundred and twenty five dollars.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Less than usual.
- 6:48Speaker 7: Yeah, what you were doing?
- 6:52Speaker 6: When I read it, I was like two twenty five
- 6:53Speaker 6: dollars but still good.
- 6:55Speaker 4: Got it for free with Yeah, that's very true. Why
- 6:58Speaker 4: don't you trump one of our comm member?
- 7:01Speaker 1: That was a great win, Kira. I'm sorry to do
- 7:03Speaker 1: that to you. Well done before it was nasty.
- 7:07Speaker 6: The next week and it comes from Lauren money Win
- 7:09Speaker 6: free beer. I went to a beer festival and as
- 7:13Speaker 6: it turns out, my ex was working at one of
- 7:15Speaker 6: the breweries. We set our hellos and then his boss goes,
- 7:19Speaker 6: feel free to give your friends some drinks, and suddenly
- 7:22Speaker 6: I went to see my ex several times that day.
- 7:28Speaker 4: Hear of your exes give you free beers because I
- 7:30Speaker 4: don't know if that's how.
- 7:31Speaker 1: My relationship maybe, well, maybe i'd give you.
- 7:35Speaker 6: A free beer because we're about to be exes.
- 7:43Speaker 1: We were staying.
- 7:44Speaker 6: Friends the next wee and it comes from Jody. My
- 7:47Speaker 6: health insurance gave me fifty six dollars back worth of
- 7:51Speaker 6: premiums as a thank you for sticking with them throughout COVID. Nice, small,
- 7:55Speaker 6: but fabulous win. We love little bonuses like that, don't we?
- 7:58Speaker 4: We do.
- 7:58Speaker 6: The final money win of the week is from Kate.
- 8:02Speaker 6: I was looking at buying some linen sheets and quilt
- 8:05Speaker 6: sets are around four hundred dollars all up, But then
- 8:08Speaker 6: I just checked the Elder Special Buyers and they have
- 8:11Speaker 6: linen sheets slash quilt sets for two hundred dollars ish
- 8:14Speaker 6: all up.
- 8:15Speaker 1: This week, riddle me something ELDI can't do. Oh please.
- 8:19Speaker 1: A few weeks ago I bought what did I buy?
- 8:22Speaker 1: A coffee machine? They have very good vegan ice cream
- 8:26Speaker 1: that middle.
- 8:27Speaker 5: They have a really they do waffle fries from Curly Fries,
- 8:31Speaker 5: which are.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Very hard to find. In case anyone's ever tried, I.
- 8:34Speaker 4: Can imagine you being a fan of both of those things.
- 8:37Speaker 4: I also bought my ski undergarments from there, so my anmals. Yeah,
- 8:41Speaker 4: every year obviously not this time a few it's a
- 8:43Speaker 4: bit warm at the moment, become I think June or
- 8:46Speaker 4: I think it's June. They do like their ski sale
- 8:48Speaker 4: and their stuff is so good and so cheap like
- 8:51Speaker 4: thermals like thirty bucks money win like, Yeah, Eldie got
- 8:54Speaker 4: a lot on Patagonia except for the environmental stuff.
- 8:58Speaker 1: That is it for the week. That's all you've got.
- 9:01Speaker 5: You did a good.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Round up though.
- 9:03Speaker 4: I'm very proud of you, all right, gee, as always,
- 9:05Speaker 4: it has been fantastic celebrating some of your budget direct
- 9:08Speaker 4: money wins. Budget Direct winner of Kanstar's Insurer of the
- 9:11Speaker 4: Year Award twenty twenty two. Budget Direct Insurance solved. All right,
- 9:15Speaker 4: let's go to a really quick break, and after the break,
- 9:17Speaker 4: we're going to answer a question from our friend Brittany,
- 9:19Speaker 4: who has a question around loans and debts, and we
- 9:22Speaker 4: are also going to talk.
- 9:23Speaker 1: About Bali, not just Georgia King's holiday. Don't go anywhere,
- 9:32Speaker 1: all right, guys.
- 9:33Speaker 5: So, as we've heard, George spent a beautiful couple of
- 9:37Speaker 5: weeks on the crisp golden sands of Bali. Did to
- 9:40Speaker 5: have a good time golden but all right, I haven't
- 9:43Speaker 5: been so unfortunately.
- 9:45Speaker 1: No, it's gorgeous. It's so nice over there whereabouts in Bali?
- 9:48Speaker 6: Did you go testing me? We went to Changu, Semenyak
- 9:52Speaker 6: and Uberod. Changu is the new coutera guys Chang.
- 9:57Speaker 1: Everyone talks about it.
- 9:58Speaker 4: I have been to Semenyak, Adore, Seminiac, so many good restaurants.
- 10:02Speaker 4: But also last time I went to Bali, I went
- 10:04Speaker 4: to Ubud and basically became a yogi.
- 10:06Speaker 1: That is exactly what I did as well.
- 10:08Speaker 4: I love it so many Asai balls, But that's not
- 10:10Speaker 4: what we're here to talk about.
- 10:12Speaker 5: You might be interested to know. Actually, then George is
- 10:14Speaker 5: just going to become a full time circling it around
- 10:17Speaker 5: because Bali have recently implemented a tax free visa for
- 10:21Speaker 5: Ossie tourists, which is pretty cool. So a little bit
- 10:24Speaker 5: more info for you in case you're interested. They've got
- 10:27Speaker 5: the new B two one one, a digital nomad visa
- 10:30Speaker 5: which allows.
- 10:31Speaker 1: Australia makes a lot of sense to me.
- 10:32Speaker 5: Yeah, which different to the B six Yeah, which is
- 10:36Speaker 5: just an It will allow Australians to live and work
- 10:40Speaker 5: in Bali for six months tax free, and apparently there's
- 10:44Speaker 5: a five year version in the works as well. Bali
- 10:47Speaker 5: previously was kind of home to a lot of digital nomad's,
- 10:50Speaker 5: people who run their own businesses or do online courses
- 10:53Speaker 5: or Yogi retreats or all those kinds of things, because
- 10:55Speaker 5: it is a beautiful country that's very close to us here.
- 10:58Speaker 5: The cost of living is obviously significantly lower than the
- 11:01Speaker 5: cost of living here. But as we've spoken about on
- 11:03Speaker 5: the pot before, if you're traveling internationally, if your business
- 11:06Speaker 5: is registered here, you're paying money to tax right here. However,
- 11:11Speaker 5: you know, if you register your business over there, it's
- 11:14Speaker 5: tax free for six months, maybe five years, if they
- 11:16Speaker 5: get that across the line and get to live in Bali,
- 11:18Speaker 5: which sounds like absolute drink to me.
- 11:20Speaker 6: And to me, my girl, I can anyone think of
- 11:23Speaker 6: a business idea for me to take over there?
- 11:25Speaker 1: Oh? My right, copies of the money. She's on the money, girl.
- 11:29Speaker 1: Didn't you do a workshop over there or something?
- 11:31Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 11:32Speaker 4: I've done some No, no, no, I mean it technically was
- 11:34Speaker 4: me taking work over seas.
- 11:35Speaker 1: I've had to pay tax on that income. What a joke. Yeah,
- 11:38Speaker 1: I ran some workshops in Bali a long time. Ago.
- 11:40Speaker 1: I'm impressed that you remembered. That stuck out to me.
- 11:43Speaker 1: It was way back when.
- 11:44Speaker 4: I think it was like twenty eighteen or so, back
- 11:46Speaker 4: when She's on the Money wasn't even properly born yet.
- 11:49Speaker 4: I was doing Shees on the Money workshops and was
- 11:51Speaker 4: invited over there to run workshops for a leadership forum,
- 11:54Speaker 4: and it was a lot of fun. The only thing
- 11:56Speaker 4: I will say, as someone who prides themselves on having
- 11:59Speaker 4: nice the humidity does not agree with me. Is not
- 12:03Speaker 4: great and my skin goes terrible. But you know, if
- 12:06Speaker 4: I'm not paying tax, maybe that's the price you pay.
- 12:09Speaker 6: If I went over there and was like, I'm creating
- 12:11Speaker 6: my own podcast all about money after that hostly not
- 12:14Speaker 6: if called George's on the Money, It's.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Called George's on the Money, watch out for it. Is
- 12:17Speaker 1: why she's leaving us. I can't tell you much, but
- 12:19Speaker 1: come along.
- 12:20Speaker 6: If I had sponsors back from Australia, I wouldn't have
- 12:23Speaker 6: to pay tax on that is right.
- 12:24Speaker 2: See.
- 12:25Speaker 4: The problem with that is obviously you would have to
- 12:27Speaker 4: register yourself in Indonesia as someone who is living there
- 12:31Speaker 4: and paying tax there. Australia would no longer be the
- 12:34Speaker 4: place that you're paying tax or generating an income. So obviously,
- 12:37Speaker 4: if you're in Australia and you work for a company
- 12:38Speaker 4: that enables you to work, you know, from wherever you want.
- 12:41Speaker 4: You can't just go to Bali and then earn income
- 12:44Speaker 4: tax free.
- 12:45Speaker 1: That's not going to work.
- 12:46Speaker 4: It will probably either have to be negotiated or you'll
- 12:48Speaker 4: have to have an employment contract in Bali to make
- 12:51Speaker 4: that work. So there's lots of semantics and you can
- 12:53Speaker 4: jump online and find them out. However, I just like
- 12:56Speaker 4: the idea that they're trying to promote more tourism coming back.
- 13:00Speaker 4: Obviously COVID hit them pretty hard. Tourism was their biggest
- 13:04Speaker 4: income generator, and now they're trying to get people from
- 13:06Speaker 4: around the globe to come and you know, set up
- 13:08Speaker 4: shop and bring it back because Balie's a gorgeous place.
- 13:11Speaker 1: It's a gorgeous place.
- 13:12Speaker 5: They estimate that it will create four point four million
- 13:15Speaker 5: jobs without taking any away from local residents, which I
- 13:17Speaker 5: think is a huge Yes, very exciting bit of a
- 13:21Speaker 5: short one, but a fun one this week, irrelevant for you, George.
- 13:24Speaker 4: That's why we picked it. Yes week's all about Georgia
- 13:26Speaker 4: and it's George's last episode. But before we get to
- 13:28Speaker 4: answering the question from our listener, Gee, how are you
- 13:31Speaker 4: feeling a little bit weird?
- 13:34Speaker 6: I mean, yeah, it's emotional, but it's exciting. It's just
- 13:38Speaker 6: it's a bit of a strange feeling. I feel like
- 13:40Speaker 6: tomorrow when I wake up, it'll be it'll be really
- 13:43Speaker 6: Dobby's a free free olm, Dobby is a free elf.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Well, he didn't know what to do with himself either. No,
- 13:52Speaker 1: but he died.
- 13:53Speaker 2: Let's not.
- 13:56Speaker 1: Wat not a great you are like a beautiful bushy fly.
- 14:03Speaker 1: You have to leave that in that. I'm really sorry, Georgia. No,
- 14:07Speaker 1: I'll see you around. You're still around. You'll see me around.
- 14:10Speaker 1: And if you want to keep up with you, where
- 14:11Speaker 1: can they find you?
- 14:12Speaker 6: Great question at my extremely active social media page, I
- 14:16Speaker 6: meant cheeking on tour?
- 14:18Speaker 1: Okays, anyone ever wondered where that nickname came from?
- 14:20Speaker 4: It was actually Instagram, which I believe came because my
- 14:24Speaker 4: sister made it for you when you were literally on
- 14:26Speaker 4: a Europe, when we were.
- 14:29Speaker 1: On a Europe. It's a good story. Tell it's a
- 14:32Speaker 1: good story.
- 14:32Speaker 6: So I, surprise, surprise, was very late to Instagram. I
- 14:37Speaker 6: didn't really get it. Still don't really, but we were
- 14:40Speaker 6: just kind of taking the mickey, and you know, there's
- 14:42Speaker 6: photos of me with like a beret next to the
- 14:45Speaker 6: Eiffel Tower, holding like a small Eiffel tower, being like.
- 14:49Speaker 1: Being a dickhead. So it kind of went from.
- 14:51Speaker 6: There, and then it really didn't pro cross anywhere because
- 14:54Speaker 6: I don't use social media, but maybe I'll try harder
- 14:57Speaker 6: so that I can stay connected with you guys, and yes,
- 15:00Speaker 6: stay connected with you the glorious shoes on the money community.
- 15:03Speaker 6: As I mentioned when we announced that I was departing
- 15:06Speaker 6: a few weeks ago. Now, it has been a great
- 15:09Speaker 6: privilege and a great honor. I've loved doing it. It's
- 15:12Speaker 6: been so special. I've learned a lot about money along
- 15:15Speaker 6: the way as well. And yeah, just I guess a
- 15:18Speaker 6: big thank you to everyone for listening and for giving
- 15:21Speaker 6: me the privilege of.
- 15:23Speaker 1: Being in your ears.
- 15:26Speaker 4: Broke our DMS. When we announced it, people were unhappy.
- 15:30Speaker 4: We were thinking maybe we'd have to go the right bodies.
- 15:34Speaker 1: They were like, we don't want to be left with
- 15:35Speaker 1: these guys.
- 15:36Speaker 4: What are you doing geeking on tour but no keeping
- 15:39Speaker 4: contact Obviously you're not going that far, just leaving the pod,
- 15:42Speaker 4: which is really far away. But no, we are so
- 15:44Speaker 4: grateful that you have been on the journey. I've said
- 15:46Speaker 4: it all to you before. I don't want to cry.
- 15:47Speaker 4: I will get really upset because I get really, really
- 15:49Speaker 4: emotional about stuff like this. But it has been an
- 15:51Speaker 4: absolute privilege sharing the last three years on the pod
- 15:54Speaker 4: with you.
- 15:55Speaker 1: I was checking up and yes, thanks to Victoria.
- 15:59Speaker 2: Corner.
- 16:00Speaker 1: It's not sad you're still I know.
- 16:03Speaker 5: I'm very excited for you, but obviously we'll miss you
- 16:05Speaker 5: so so so much.
- 16:08Speaker 6: And yeah, thank you to Victoria and Jess for making
- 16:10Speaker 6: it such a brilliant experience. And I love you both,
- 16:13Speaker 6: and stay in touch.
- 16:15Speaker 1: Don't forget me. We're not gonna forget you.
- 16:18Speaker 4: But you think that your social media is where we're
- 16:20Speaker 4: going to keep in contact. Like anybody who knows Georgia,
- 16:23Speaker 4: you just don't bother now.
- 16:24Speaker 5: Alex told me you were meant to change your name
- 16:26Speaker 5: to jeeking at home, and you just never did.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Any jeeking on at home.
- 16:34Speaker 4: It's actually the best thing ever because I'll be like, oh, yeah,
- 16:36Speaker 4: that thing we did on Instagram, and George will be like, yes,
- 16:39Speaker 4: that thing you did on the Instagram.
- 16:42Speaker 1: I don't like my nine year old Grandma, it's my favorite. Alright, alright,
- 16:47Speaker 1: let's get back into the show that people want. A
- 16:49Speaker 1: listener question, what have we got?

- 17:09Speaker 6: on the show. Now, let's take a listen to today's
- 17:12Speaker 6: money dilemma.
- 17:14Speaker 8: Hi, I'm a twenty three year old who has just
- 17:16Speaker 8: finished UNI. I'm finally working my dream job making some
- 17:21Speaker 8: quite good money considering. However, when I was at UNI,
- 17:24Speaker 8: I tried to live it but my means quite significantly
- 17:27Speaker 8: and got out. Zip pays Zip money after paying nimbles
- 17:31Speaker 8: anything to try to pay my bills and pay my
- 17:33Speaker 8: car loan and my rent. So now that I'm making
- 17:36Speaker 8: this amazing money as a new grad, I'm still left
- 17:39Speaker 8: with next to nothing trying to repay all of these
- 17:42Speaker 8: silly little loans. So please help me dig myself out
- 17:45Speaker 8: of this hole. How do I have more financial freedom
- 17:49Speaker 8: and have more control over my money and so I
- 17:52Speaker 8: don't ever do that again.
- 17:53Speaker 2: Help.
- 17:54Speaker 4: This is so common and I was talking to you
- 17:57Speaker 4: about this the other day, actually, Jess, where you go
- 18:00Speaker 4: from being a rich UNI student to a broke professional.
- 18:04Speaker 4: And it's an interesting juxtaposition because I think that when
- 18:07Speaker 4: we UNI students be like Yolo, it doesn't matter. I
- 18:09Speaker 4: don't need to save or I don't need to do this,
- 18:11Speaker 4: so I'll just do it when I have a career,
- 18:13Speaker 4: or do it when I.
- 18:14Speaker 1: Have a full time income.
- 18:15Speaker 4: Then you get your full time income and you're like
- 18:17Speaker 4: paying the debts for the decisions you made during university.
- 18:21Speaker 1: And I say that because that's what I did.
- 18:24Speaker 4: Yeah, slippery slope, I totally understand it. But I think
- 18:28Speaker 4: now is the time to really just take hold of
- 18:30Speaker 4: your budget and your cash flow.
- 18:31Speaker 1: I can't emphasize it more.
- 18:33Speaker 4: I need you to sit down, every single person and
- 18:35Speaker 4: understand how much money is coming in, how much money
- 18:38Speaker 4: is going out, what do your debts look like. I
- 18:40Speaker 4: have no idea of you know, the cumulative debt that
- 18:43Speaker 4: you're in or where they're all sitting. But if you've
- 18:45Speaker 4: got a number of different buy now, pay later companies,
- 18:47Speaker 4: having a look at which ones have you know, the
- 18:49Speaker 4: highest fees or the highest amount of exit fees and
- 18:52Speaker 4: paying the big ones off first. But we also did
- 18:55Speaker 4: an episode talking about debt reduction where we discuss the
- 18:58Speaker 4: differences between.
- 18:59Speaker 1: The snowball method and the avalanche method.
- 19:01Speaker 4: I would absolutely go back and listen to that and
- 19:04Speaker 4: decide what strategy works for you. I also would recommend
- 19:07Speaker 4: keeping track of it, like get a chart, write a
- 19:10Speaker 4: list of where you're going to be at, make goals
- 19:13Speaker 4: so that you know, all right, well, I know that
- 19:15Speaker 4: I can contribute fifty dollars a week to this. If
- 19:17Speaker 4: I do that, by December, I'm going to be out
- 19:19Speaker 4: of debt, or by you know, January, I'm going to
- 19:21Speaker 4: be out. It's one of those things where create a
- 19:24Speaker 4: goal because then you feel like you're working towards something
- 19:26Speaker 4: and actually track it because you feel like you're.
- 19:29Speaker 1: On the way.
- 19:30Speaker 4: Jess, you've been in debt before. How did you feel
- 19:33Speaker 4: getting out of it?
- 19:33Speaker 2: Ah?
- 19:34Speaker 5: I think I said before. It was a huge weight
- 19:36Speaker 5: off of my shoulders. It was simultaneously the best feeling
- 19:40Speaker 5: ever and the most underwhelming experience of my life. Like
- 19:42Speaker 5: the finally going into the bank and closing the card
- 19:45Speaker 5: and being like it's done, it's gone.
- 19:47Speaker 1: Where's my parade? Don't they have like confetti cannons? I
- 19:51Speaker 1: kind of expect.
- 19:52Speaker 5: Them to going to be like a sticker or something
- 19:53Speaker 5: at the very least, but like a yeah, nothing for
- 19:57Speaker 5: poor little Jess.
- 19:58Speaker 1: You literally get more when you vaccinated. It's true, what
- 20:01Speaker 1: the hell? Or when you vote?
- 20:03Speaker 5: I got stickers when I got vaccinated. Yeah, but it's
- 20:06Speaker 5: such a good feeling. I think just plugging away, particularly
- 20:10Speaker 5: if you've just come out of UNI and you're like,
- 20:11Speaker 5: oh my god, how did this happen? We've all been there.
- 20:14Speaker 5: But I think just chipping away regularly, setting it up
- 20:17Speaker 5: so that you get used to that amount of money
- 20:20Speaker 5: disappearing as you pay it off, pushing yourself forward to
- 20:23Speaker 5: pay it off, and then when you do, being like okay, great,
- 20:25Speaker 5: like I'm going to take that same amount of money
- 20:28Speaker 5: and put it towards something else is what really worked
- 20:30Speaker 5: for me, because nothing really changed in terms of lifestyle.
- 20:33Speaker 5: I was already seeing that money disappear. It was just
- 20:35Speaker 5: now it was going towards saving for a goal rather
- 20:38Speaker 5: than paying down a debt.
- 20:39Speaker 4: Yeah, and it's exciting because if you do that, well,
- 20:42Speaker 4: you're automatically going to have a really good savings habit
- 20:45Speaker 4: because you're so used to putting that money aside.
- 20:48Speaker 1: Don't change it. Continue to put that money aside. When
- 20:51Speaker 1: one debt's gone, just retransfer it to a savings account,
- 20:54Speaker 1: and you've set yourself up for success. I think it's genius. Yeah,
- 20:57Speaker 1: that's smart.
- 20:58Speaker 6: The other thing that I've I've learned about on this
- 21:01Speaker 6: very podcast, Ladies, that Brittany might find helpful is knowing
- 21:06Speaker 6: about the trap of lifestyle creep.
- 21:08Speaker 1: So that is, when you.
- 21:10Speaker 6: Gain a better income, you can become very tempted to
- 21:14Speaker 6: spend that income on nice, pretty little things. And whilst
- 21:17Speaker 6: it seems harmless at the start, I'll just grab, you know,
- 21:21Speaker 6: a latte day, then all of a sudden you're grabbing
- 21:24Speaker 6: a croissant with your latte.
- 21:25Speaker 1: I don't know if this is the best example, but.
- 21:27Speaker 4: It's your example because I know what you do every day,
- 21:30Speaker 4: have a college be aware I do it anyway.
- 21:33Speaker 6: These little things can creep into your lifestyle that you
- 21:36Speaker 6: don't really notice, and then all of a sudden you're
- 21:38Speaker 6: spending hundreds of dollars a week on non essential spends just.
- 21:42Speaker 1: Because you can afford it.
- 21:43Speaker 6: But that is jeopardizing your largest saving if I retrospectively.
- 21:47Speaker 4: At my journey from university into full time working, I
- 21:52Speaker 4: guess my best example of that is my makeup.
- 21:54Speaker 1: And I've said this before. I think I actually wrote
- 21:56Speaker 1: about it.
- 21:56Speaker 4: In my first book, where you know, when I was
- 21:59Speaker 4: at high school and I didn't really have any income
- 22:01Speaker 4: and my mum was buying me makeup for the first time.
- 22:04Speaker 1: It was just from the supermarket. Whatever was like handy
- 22:06Speaker 1: we would get.
- 22:07Speaker 4: And then I got my first job and I started
- 22:09Speaker 4: paying for my own makeup, and so i'd still buy
- 22:11Speaker 4: it at the supermarket, but maybe i'd go to like
- 22:13Speaker 4: price line, and then things got a little bit more
- 22:16Speaker 4: bougie and expensive. When I was at union, I was like,
- 22:18Speaker 4: all right, now it's price line. I'd get some stuff
- 22:20Speaker 4: from Maya. I'd also get some stuff from the chemist.
- 22:23Speaker 4: Like things got progressively more expensive, and then my full
- 22:26Speaker 4: time job, I'm like, okay, sit down adoor, Beauty and Mecca,
- 22:29Speaker 4: like we're gonna have to talk. I'm a level three
- 22:32Speaker 4: beauty looper. Like it actually just spiraled and you just
- 22:36Speaker 4: don't realize it because like to me, I go, oh,
- 22:38Speaker 4: but that's the foundation I use. I can't cut back
- 22:41Speaker 4: on that, and then you look back ten years ago
- 22:42Speaker 4: and I'm like, well, I was really happy with Mayberlen,
- 22:45Speaker 4: Like where did that slope slip? And why have I
- 22:48Speaker 4: decided that in line with my income, I deserve better
- 22:51Speaker 4: quality products, Like I get it, maybe that's one of
- 22:54Speaker 4: your core values. But when it came back down to it,
- 22:56Speaker 4: I was like, hold up, I don't need this, and
- 22:58Speaker 4: that's why so many of my cosmetics nowadays are so cheap.
- 23:02Speaker 1: And I lost my Level three Beauty Loops status. It's
- 23:05Speaker 1: not the worst thing in the world.
- 23:07Speaker 4: I mean, it means I'm spending less, but it's also
- 23:09Speaker 4: kind of like going back to what your true values
- 23:12Speaker 4: are because it kind of just became second nature to me,
- 23:15Speaker 4: especially as someone who was working in the CBD. It's
- 23:17Speaker 4: not as prevalent to just like walk into chemist warehouse
- 23:20Speaker 4: and get some stuff. I was like, oh, Mecca's down there,
- 23:22Speaker 4: Maybe I'll pop down there on my lunch break, Like
- 23:24Speaker 4: it's an experience. I love it, Like there's nothing more
- 23:27Speaker 4: that I love in this world than a good mecha store.
- 23:29Speaker 1: They smell so good.
- 23:30Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 23:31Speaker 4: The only place that smells better than a mecha store
- 23:33Speaker 4: is a Peter Alexander store.
- 23:34Speaker 1: Yeah, delicious, Yeah, not wrong.
- 23:36Speaker 4: So for me, it was about reflecting on my values
- 23:39Speaker 4: and going well, Actually, am I getting enough value from
- 23:41Speaker 4: this or not? And I mean there are still some
- 23:43Speaker 4: bougie things I love to use, but I think it's
- 23:45Speaker 4: really about reflecting and going well, is this in line
- 23:48Speaker 4: with my values?
- 23:48Speaker 1: And Georgia King, if your coffee and croissant is.
- 23:51Speaker 4: Your values, I'm not gonna argue with you over that.
- 23:53Speaker 4: And I think that that's one of the learnings that
- 23:55Speaker 4: I wish i'd kind of bit in the bottom as
- 23:57Speaker 4: I was coming out of union into full time world,
- 24:00Speaker 4: because you just don't need to fit in by spending
- 24:02Speaker 4: an exorbitant amount of money on stuff.
- 24:05Speaker 1: All right, with that.
- 24:09Speaker 4: Hard Georgia King, many of you, thank you? Any final
- 24:14Speaker 4: words before we boot you.
- 24:16Speaker 1: Out nap, just not being bladed.
- 24:18Speaker 4: Thanks you're leaving, Just so you know you're leaving voluntarily
- 24:21Speaker 4: like this, This was your choice?
- 24:23Speaker 1: Yes, yes, yes, no. Just a big thank you to all.
- 24:26Speaker 6: The listeners, to my two girls sitting here with me today,
- 24:29Speaker 6: to Anna Lisa, our beautiful producer, just to everyone who's
- 24:32Speaker 6: been involved. It's been such a special experience, one that
- 24:35Speaker 6: I'm not going to forget anytime. Soon and yeah, I'm
- 24:39Speaker 6: not going anywhere. I kind of am, but I love
- 24:41Speaker 6: you all.
- 24:42Speaker 1: Is that a good way of bending?
- 24:43Speaker 4: We do, See your brunch tomorrow, Georgia King, Bye, Guy Bye.
