Latest / Cage Match: A Roundabout Way of Meeting Nicolas Cage / Willy's Wonderland vs Wild at Heart
Transcript
- 0:00Hey everybody, it's producer Peter.
- 0:02The recording with our friend Lunchbox, Nick Cage, artist and tattoo artist got a little
- 0:07funky with the audio.
- 0:09We ended up having to use sort of our scratch track from discord to make sure everything
- 0:14was as audible as possible.
- 0:17And it's not perfect at all times.
- 0:19So I apologize for that.
- 0:20But I think you can still get the gist and have a good time with us.
- 0:23So thanks for listening.
- 0:38Yeah I love the fact that we had to have a conversation about your government name and
- 0:42your actual name.
- 0:43I probably forgot your government name, but I do thoroughly respect the application of
- 0:51the term.
- 0:52How did you end up as Lunchbox?
- 0:55Well my name I was born with was a little too common down in California where I was
- 0:59going to college.
- 1:00There's like five of us in the circles.
- 1:04We all ended up getting nicknames.
- 1:06It originally came from dogma.
- 1:08The sound Bob was called Lunchbox once.
- 1:11And between that just my eating habits back then kind of stuck.
- 1:15And then I kept it professionally because like my names were way too common.
- 1:19Matthew and Chris are names people forget all the time.
- 1:22Yeah that makes a ton of sense.
- 1:25It's surprising how often people forget their artists name.
- 1:28They just go into a tattoo shop.
- 1:29They're like I don't know.
- 1:30It's like out of the ages and tattoos.
- 1:34It's like that's not a good clue man.
- 1:36He's like mid height.
- 1:38He had short hair.
- 1:39So yeah no people remember this much more.
- 1:41I get a lot more comments on my name than they used to.
- 1:44I have a very generic appearance so I blend into a lot of.
- 1:50It's fucking true.
- 1:51Every time I go out I see someone who I think is you but it's not you.
- 1:54Because I don't go out.
- 1:55Just one of those faces.
- 1:57That's part of it.
- 1:58Yeah.
- 1:59That was your first clue.
- 2:00It's beyond just face.
- 2:01It's like a walk in a body too.
- 2:03You're just like an everyman.
- 2:05Just a confidence.
- 2:06Yeah.
- 2:07It's the confidence.
- 2:08Yeah that's really what gets it.
- 2:09It's a confidence man.
- 2:11That's it.
- 2:12Yeah exactly.
- 2:13You get it.
- 2:14Now that I think about it I don't ever see you out.
- 2:16I see you in my house and I see you at the bar.
- 2:18Yeah.
- 2:19But never in between.
- 2:20I've got a tunnel.
- 2:21It takes me between the two.
- 2:24So are you just the silver four door car of people?
- 2:30Because like that's what I drive.
- 2:31I get it lost in a parking lot all the time.
- 2:34Like I constantly forget where I park because it has no distinguishing features.
- 2:38I actually tried to go the opposite way when I bought my last car and I bought just a bright
- 2:43orange Subaru.
- 2:44I always can find that.
- 2:45Yeah it was good for like a couple months and then all of a sudden it's like there's
- 2:53three bright orange Subarus on my block.
- 2:56Every time I see one I'm like oh it's Nick.
- 2:58It's not.
- 2:59They're foreign this neighborhood alone.
- 3:00Not including when you come to visit.
- 3:01It's the burden of being a trendsetter.
- 3:02I guess.
- 3:03Everybody kind of looked at me in that thing and it's like oh yeah you know that kind of
- 3:11looks like it was me driving it like you get a gauge of like how good you would look whenever
- 3:16I sit in a vehicle and you're like yeah.
- 3:20OK that could work.
- 3:21See I don't see that.
- 3:22I don't look anything like you.
- 3:25No I mean maybe if I sat in a front of a taco truck.
- 3:31Whoa alright.
- 3:33What?
- 3:34Sean likes to eat.
- 3:35I do.
- 3:36And I do like tacos.
- 3:38Tacos are good.
- 3:39Undeniably.
- 3:40They look at you like you're a little bit weird.
- 3:41They don't know what I look like Peter.
- 3:42That's true.
- 3:43Yeah they do.
- 3:44They look at your face all the time on the art.
- 3:47That's fair.
- 3:48They don't know which one is which.
- 3:51You're the one that looks like everybody.
- 3:53What was the last drawing I had posted?
- 3:57And can I post pictures in this channel?
- 4:00What number did I get to?
- 4:01The answer in general is X-Men 97 is so good.
- 4:04It is.
- 4:05It's great.
- 4:06Is it?
- 4:07I've been hearing that.
- 4:08It's amazing.
- 4:09I got a Cyclops tattoo because I got so into X-Men 97.
- 4:14That's pretty hardcore.
- 4:16It's right next to my Magneto tattoo that I've had for 10 years now.
- 4:19Oh god it's Brent Ryan versus Bill Furpo.
- 4:23Fucking Bill Furpo.
- 4:26I hate that that is a name that I just always remember.
- 4:30What's that from?
- 4:31Trapped in Paradise.
- 4:32Oh.
- 4:33No full disclosure I have not watched all of these.
- 4:37You haven't watched all of them?
- 4:39Not all of them.
- 4:40I've watched a lot of them.
- 4:41What's your body count at this point?
- 4:43I don't know what my body count is.
- 4:45I've seen most of the Nick Cage movies or at least the relevant ones I feel.
- 4:49I thought I had seen a lot of the relevant ones before too but it turns out I had only
- 4:53watched like seven Nicolas Cage movies.
- 4:55Now you've watched like 70.
- 4:57Yeah.
- 4:58I think it's over at 74.
- 5:0174?
- 5:02Yeah.
- 5:03I haven't started, because we were gonna watch Unbearable Weight of Massive Town.
- 5:07My brother got this idea for us to watch everything that was even vaguely mentioned in that movie.
- 5:13Okay.
- 5:14So you've seen The Crudes?
- 5:15Yes.
- 5:16I watched The Crudes too.
- 5:17I had a friend, we had a friend of ours who watched it with us just describe The Crudes
- 5:21one.
- 5:22Hey, we figured that'd be good enough.
- 5:25And it was.
- 5:27I lost at all.
- 5:28Yeah.
- 5:29I feel like you've probably got the gist pretty easily on that one.
- 5:32Yeah.
- 5:33that you watched that you regretted watching.
- 5:36I think there were some stinkers in there.
- 5:38There's got to be.
- 5:39Was it guarding tests?
- 5:41Candy Corelli's mandolin wasn't as boring as I expected it to be.
- 5:45Oh, that was like shockingly not terrible.
- 5:48It's so mediocre.
- 5:50It's so it's just fine.
- 5:52Yeah, I would.
- 5:53I would also describe it as shockingly not terrible.
- 5:56Like, how about that?
- 5:57Yeah, perfect.
- 5:59That's also what we came to last episode.
- 6:01Yeah, again.
- 6:03Again, like I'm sure like the first time we watched it, we're like,
- 6:06I don't know, it's fine.
- 6:08Yeah, but it's not that other movie.
- 6:10So it was better than whatever it was that other time.
- 6:13Yeah, yeah, like I know there are worse engagement for sure.
- 6:17Well, I'm just going to jump right in here.
- 6:19Otherwise, we're never going to get to it.
- 6:20Welcome to Kate. Welcome back to cage match.
- 6:22Colon around about way of meeting Nicholas Gage.
- 6:24I'm your host, Sean, here with my co-host colon Nick.
- 6:28So you came in real hard on that colon and I got excited.
- 6:31I wanted to colon.
- 6:33And our son colon with acid yellow.
- 6:36Sorry. Oh, boy.
- 6:40Yeah. So what do we do here, Sean?
- 6:41We here we take 64 Nicholas Cage movies as decided by us
- 6:46in bracket style March Madness down to the two
- 6:51catious films as decided by Nick and myself and sometimes Peter.
- 6:54Yeah, but never our guests.
- 6:56No, sorry, lunchbox.
- 6:58It's fine. Also, who are you?
- 7:02Who are you and why are you in our discord?
- 7:04I was invited.
- 7:08I started a year and some odd time ago.
- 7:14Started the challenge of drawing every Nick Cage.
- 7:17And now here I am.
- 7:19It's a beautiful endeavor.
- 7:21It is like there's certain sin to it.
- 7:24I started to worry like maybe like a dozen in the end,
- 7:27but like really after you've drawn him like 20 something times,
- 7:30you kind of get like a Stockholm syndrome for it.
- 7:32I feel. Yeah, we feel that we get it.
- 7:36Yeah, like you see his face in your dreams and stuff.
- 7:40We've been doing this for nearly what two years?
- 7:42Yeah. Two years in July.
- 7:44Yeah. Two years.
- 7:46Yeah, it's a long time.
- 7:47I've been doing this for at least a year.
- 7:49Been drawing for longer.
- 7:51But drug Nick Cage for a year or so.
- 7:53It would be amazing if that was the way you started getting into drawing.
- 7:57Kind of like the guy who was drawing in diesel every day.
- 8:01I just have to draw this man.
- 8:03And like this is going to look like my fashion in drawing.
- 8:06He's my muse.
- 8:08I must paint you.
- 8:09There was a guy who is drawing Mike Trout every day until like something happened.
- 8:16I was like, that's weird.
- 8:18Like I didn't really follow it.
- 8:20So I don't know if they improved or not or if they even stuck with it.
- 8:23I saw like five Mike Trout drawings and I was like, that's a really weird thing.
- 8:27Also, what a great name.
- 8:29Thanks. Yeah, thanks for a lot of this.
- 8:32I mean, we wouldn't have found each other if not for Reddit.
- 8:34So there you go.
- 8:36So, you know, there's something it did.
- 8:40Star-crossed lovers.
- 8:42Do you have a favorite Nicolas Cage you've drawn so far?
- 8:46Oh, man, there has been some.
- 8:48I think it's a draw him with the helmet on.
- 8:50I enjoyed that.
- 8:52That was a good one.
- 8:53I liked drawing red just because I like red.
- 8:56Big fan of Mandy.
- 8:58I actually wore my cheddar goblin shirt for like, you know, sick.
- 9:01Oh, yeah.
- 9:02Nice representation.
- 9:04I think I didn't want to seem like I came in biased, but I I'm wearing my wild at heart shirt today.
- 9:10So I'm all nice.
- 9:12I mean, I tried to go.
- 9:14I do want a Willie's Wonderland shirt.
- 9:16You wore a Willie Wonderland shirt.
- 9:18I want one.
- 9:20You're not on camera.
- 9:21You could just say you're wearing a Willie's Wonderland shirt.
- 9:23Say it now.
- 9:24Take a fresh take.
- 9:25Now I've already admitted I haven't.
- 9:27I refuse to lie.
- 9:28Good.
- 9:29The sin would be just vocal.
- 9:31We'd hear it.
- 9:32We could tell why I wasn't your choice.
- 9:34I'm integrity.
- 9:36Yeah, you're integrity.
- 9:37Said no one hosting a Nicholas Cage podcast.
- 9:40Definitely not this podcast.
- 9:43You know, it was fun was drawing the animated cages because it was kind of like this little island in the middle of all of his face is I get to draw something actually different.
- 9:51Wait, did you draw G Force?
- 9:53Yeah, yeah, I drew them all from G Force not long ago.
- 9:56Yeah.
- 9:58Speckles.
- 10:00But I know what his character look like and I know its name, because that's what I said all the time.
- 10:05Unfortunately, I remember all of the hamster names from that.
- 10:09I was like, why is that stuck in my brain?
- 10:13Okay, so there's Darwin, Juarez, Blaster and Hurley.
- 10:20Yeah, what about Steve Buscemi?
- 10:22I can't remember what the mice were named.
- 10:23He was a hamster.
- 10:24Hamster whatever fucking same thing.
- 10:27God damn it.
- 10:28Respect the film.
- 10:30Respect the craft.
- 10:31I don't know.
- 10:32His name was probably like nibbles.
- 10:34That sounds pretty good.
- 10:37I believe that I'm not going to check.
- 10:39Good enough for us.
- 10:41We're a serious podcast.
- 10:43Well, speaking of animated cages, I think we do have to discuss briefly the Spider-Man noir is happening.
- 10:49Yeah.
- 10:50Live action.
- 10:51Spider-Man.
- 10:52Yeah, this week in cage.
- 10:54Yeah, seems like that's going to be a real deal.
- 10:57You know, we might be living at the end of days, but fuck if it isn't a ride.
- 11:02Yeah, I think it's a ride.
- 11:07I think it's a ride.
- 11:08Yeah.
- 11:09So the surfer got a six minute standing Oh, at Cannes.
- 11:14I know.
- 11:15They say it's like a real return to like a Mandy ask kind of performance.
- 11:19Pretty excited for the surfer.
- 11:21And we also have long legs.
- 11:23Which continues to show us like nothing.
- 11:26Yeah.
- 11:27I think the cage is a current trajectory and like more horror and creepy shit.
- 11:35Yeah.
- 11:36Creepy shit films.
- 11:37I think, you know, he's moved past action.
- 11:39He's too old for that.
- 11:40Well, and definitely romantic comedy is out the window at this point.
- 11:43I beg to differ.
- 11:45We could have a return to figure.
- 11:47I mean, it could be like an about Schmidt situation.
- 11:49Mandy's a love story.
- 11:51He's old at this point.
- 11:52Mandy is a love story though, like I will agree with that.
- 11:57It's a lost love story.
- 11:58Sorry, spoilers.
- 12:00I mean, like unforgivens kind of a love story, right?
- 12:03That's not a big age movie.
- 12:05There are movies that other people read.
- 12:07It was a Clint Eastwood movie.
- 12:08We don't watch those.
- 12:09We don't have time.
- 12:11I don't have time.
- 12:13I'm about to have a baby.
- 12:14I mean, not me, but.
- 12:16Oh, geez.
- 12:17It's fine. It's fine.
- 12:18You're a man. You can say it.
- 12:19That's true.
- 12:20Don't limit yourself.
- 12:21You're a man.
- 12:22The world's your oyster.
- 12:23Give birth.
- 12:24You're a white man.
- 12:25True.
- 12:26So as I was saying on this podcast, we take two Nicholas Cage movies and decide which is the best cage film as decided by Nick and myself.
- 12:35And this week we are discussing David Lynch's Wild at Heart and some other guys.
- 12:40Willie's Wonderland.
- 12:41Some other guys.
- 12:42Willie's Wonderland.
- 12:45Nailed it.
- 12:46I want to talk about Willie's Wonderland.
- 12:47Mostly I want to talk about the character of Tex.
- 12:51McAdoo.
- 12:52Tex McAdoo.
- 12:53And why does he have a fake mustache on?
- 12:55Well, because he's from Texas, so he needs a mustache.
- 12:58But I'm sure they found the actor like a week beforehand.
- 13:02I just love his shitty and grin is like, and now you're an employee.
- 13:07Yeah, it just seems like such an odd thing.
- 13:11OK, so you confirmed that the mustache was fake.
- 13:13Oh, it's hella fake.
- 13:14It looks like it's a piece of paper with like nine hairs across.
- 13:17At least it wasn't CGI.
- 13:19Take that, Joss Whedon's Justice League.
- 13:22You had a relevant hot take.
- 13:24Well, that was a removal removal of a mustache.
- 13:27Right. Yeah, that's fair.
- 13:28Yeah, this is the inversion.
- 13:29OK, you got me there.
- 13:31I would love to see a fake like CG added mustache that like kind of slides in the frame and like animation doesn't snap.
- 13:40That filter.
- 13:41Yeah, every once in a while it kind of disappears and you have dog ears, a big tongue that just licks the audience.
- 13:49You got it. It's a terrible movie.
- 13:51So Lunchbox, had you seen Willy's Wonderland at this point?
- 13:55No, no, this is the first time.
- 13:56This is the first time I've seen Willy's Wonderland.
- 13:59It was OK.
- 14:00How do you feel about our namesake here not having a single line of dialogue?
- 14:08That I liked.
- 14:09Actually, one big criticism I'd have, I think the movie could have done better with less dialogue, even with a silent protagonist.
- 14:16I feel like there was too much talking in the movie.
- 14:19Yeah, those kids do talk a lot.
- 14:22It's mostly exposition.
- 14:24Yeah. Oh, yeah.
- 14:25Like I think in my notes I wrote, I wrote where there was two separate exposition dogs that just tell you a story.
- 14:32I mean, you could have cut dialogue in the super happy fun room or whatever when the kids are getting down.
- 14:40You just need like sex, sex, sex.
- 14:43Oh, quick look over.
- 14:45Sex, sex, sex.
- 14:46And then like the alligator is doing like nothing now.
- 14:49So also I think it would have been great if the gator popped up out of the ball pit.
- 14:54I was going to say that's my biggest beef with this movie is no kid dies in the ball pit by the alligator.
- 14:59Yeah, why was there no monster in the ball pit?
- 15:01I watched this with my wife and she said it was like, oh crap, a ball pit.
- 15:04You know, there's snakes in that thing.
- 15:06Like I don't like ball pit.
- 15:08So it's a good there's just be in a ball pit.
- 15:11Relax.
- 15:12Crocodile just sits up like the undertaker.
- 15:16This is kind of like wasted opportunity.
- 15:18The movie like a couple more good decisions and they would have had a pretty solid like B or like if Sam Raimi had made this, it would have been great.
- 15:28Fuck. Yeah.
- 15:29If it was like puppets instead of like an excess of CG and if like they didn't talk so much because I feel like it definitely took me out of it every time they talked and then got all CG.
- 15:39They cut around for them.
- 15:41Our puppets like the ostrich was a puppet.
- 15:46Yeah, I want you to tell him.
- 15:47Ostrich is pretty solid.
- 15:48They had the goods like Sub Zero spine.
- 15:50Like that one was good.
- 15:52That was a big fan of that one.
- 15:53The ostrich and the gorilla are the two best fight scenes.
- 15:57I feel I really enjoyed the nighty night fight again.
- 16:03Enormous thick foam sword and like just suspending disbelief and being like that could totally cut a person in half.
- 16:12It's like four inches of foam, but it could.
- 16:16Yeah, it's got it's got Satan's edge to some sort of lacquer on it.
- 16:21How long do you think he's taking those breaks?
- 16:24I mean, he's taking a full 15, maybe just a 10.
- 16:29Yeah, it seems like a 10.
- 16:30How often did he take a break?
- 16:32Because he's taking him like he's taking like six in that one evening.
- 16:35One night, I guess, Tex never said how many breaks to take and he never takes a lunch.
- 16:39So he doesn't take a lunch.
- 16:40That's true.
- 16:41Just punch pop.
- 16:42He also renovates her business in a night, which seems a little much.
- 16:48Where did the teen bodies go?
- 16:50Yeah.
- 16:51That was my I didn't think about this my first viewing and I thought about it today.
- 16:55A bunch of teens died, but he finished cleaning that place up.
- 16:59So are they just like in the dumpster?
- 17:01Yeah, like they held up their end of the deal.
- 17:04He agreed to this.
- 17:05I think the animatronics eat them.
- 17:08He did spend extra involved.
- 17:11And that was all great.
- 17:13Everything was a pinball machine, including his improvised disco dance.
- 17:17That was my favorite scene for sure.
- 17:19It just like power move at the end.
- 17:22Yeah.
- 17:23Yeah, I like the kind of frosted lens, like kind of soft colors, like beaming through as he's just.
- 17:32Oh, he's fucking feeling that.
- 17:34Yeah, he's tripping out on whatever drink he's drinking.
- 17:37He's gotten in the zone.
- 17:38It's the pinball.
- 17:40The first one is that they spent a lot of time on the pinball machine.
- 17:43They do spend a lot of time with the pinball machine.
- 17:46And I like that.
- 17:47It's a nice break from the ridiculousness of the premise of the movie.
- 17:52Is this a sequel to Tommy, the pinball wizard?
- 17:56Yeah, the pinball pinball barbarian.
- 18:00Where are we going to go with that?
- 18:03Now, for headcanon, it makes me enjoy the movie to believe that this is just red on his way back from somewhere.
- 18:09This is just like a noteworthy experience for him.
- 18:12My headcanon is he's a high level like fighter or something that just happens to be in a low level dungeon.
- 18:22He just has to clear it like it's less work for him to just do the quest than to go around and get his car fixed elsewise.
- 18:32So he just shows up and it's like, fine, I'll kill your little monsters, but you're not going to get a word out of me for it.
- 18:39I think he was a form in a former life. He was a costume mascot somewhere.
- 18:44No, you think he's a water baby with water, baby.
- 18:48What does that mean?
- 18:50What does that mean, Nick?
- 18:52I'm assuming it means he has water for brains.
- 18:54Oh, I got you.
- 18:57OK. Ostrich comes to life, tries to kill you.
- 19:01Maybe that's a one off. You go back to clean when the gorilla like
- 19:05surprises new say bots into the into the bathroom and gorilla greetings you.
- 19:11All right. Maybe just preemptively take out a couple more animatronics.
- 19:15Yeah, like he has some weird moral code against killing them when they're not trying to kill him.
- 19:20Like beat the shit out of those fucking things.
- 19:23To be fair, the like constraints of the quest were not killed the animatronics. It was clean up.
- 19:29Clean up. Yeah. Yeah. If we're talking about quests, you're right.
- 19:32That's actually wasting time destroying the robots.
- 19:35It just takes away from the amount of cleaning.
- 19:38It's vandalizing the property you're restoring anyway.
- 19:41At some point, he was going to have to buff Willie's tough.
- 19:46I do like how him and Willie, when they have their fight, Willie kicks his ass, throws him in the ball pit, then just like goes for a pee.
- 19:54Yeah. Just walk wanders off so he can get up and go like load up his burlap sack with punch pop and
- 20:01like tape a broom handle together instead of, you know, going and picking up that shotgun.
- 20:05Yeah. I don't know how the sack of soda was the most effective way.
- 20:09Well, when Willie stepped on the shotgun, he broke it.
- 20:12So the shotgun was out of commission.
- 20:14Here's something I noticed on this viewing when the sheriff gets like smacked in half, when it cuts back to so cool,
- 20:22when it cuts back to Willie, the top half of the torso is just in the side of the camera.
- 20:28I'm assuming it's just hanging from like a gurney or something.
- 20:32So it's just like hanging there. There's just a fist hanging there.
- 20:35There are some could be embedded in the wall, but probably not.
- 20:40Yeah. So speaking of the burlap sack of punch pop, I love that he has that nice car.
- 20:49And like by all accounts, like does not look to be a vagrant, carries all of his shit in a burlap sack.
- 20:57Like one used potato sack. Show me a better sack.
- 21:01Bindle. I don't I'm not. Yeah.
- 21:03All right. I take it back.
- 21:05Thank God this isn't a visual medium for everyone else yet.
- 21:09Yeah. Find us on YouTube.
- 21:12I was on a porn club account going. We stopped on that idea.
- 21:15Yeah. Well, I just haven't had time to pursue it again.
- 21:19So you keep getting distracted. Yeah. Every time I log in, like something else comes up.
- 21:24It's sort of like edging for us being on that.
- 21:28I think this is a very fun movie. I think it's a very low commitment film.
- 21:34Like you don't need to ask much of yourself and you shouldn't ask much of this movie or your wife.
- 21:41The thing about wife, my wife, until 13 minutes into this movie, thought we were watching a Willy Wonka movie.
- 21:49Oh yeah. OK. Different.
- 21:51Like when does Gene Wilder come out? It was often a very strange start.
- 21:58Nick Cage is a mute Willy Wonka. Yeah.
- 22:01She was rolling with it for 13 whole minutes. So I found myself.
- 22:04I mean, I was watching on Hulu, which I think everyone probably was.
- 22:08And you can skip like 10 second increments on Hulu like really rapidly.
- 22:14And I found myself only jumping to the fight scenes because I just didn't give a shit about anything else.
- 22:21They don't really build the tension between those terrible and like building any sort of tension.
- 22:26It was just stuff happened. Yeah.
- 22:28And like the the cuck dude, like who fucking cares?
- 22:31Like you're pining after Liv and then the weird like chameleon is going to try and fuck you or whatever.
- 22:38And you deserve to die.
- 22:40Yeah, like the terrible, the terrible teenagers were just regular terrible, not like satire, terrible like the Tucker and Dale kids or something like that.
- 22:49Yeah, I love that movie.
- 22:52See, Doug or Dale's great because it's a good comedy and a good horror.
- 22:55This was not good at either one of those.
- 22:57Like I think somebody made your mom and dad episode that it was not a good horror movie.
- 23:02It's not a good comedy movie.
- 23:04It's not like something like the Evil Dead show where they do a good job both.
- 23:10That's terrific because that's my opinion of mom and dad.
- 23:14I have the exact opposite opinion here where it's like it's not like a great comedy.
- 23:19It's not a great horror, but I don't know.
- 23:22I feel like it's at least there's more commitment to I don't know.
- 23:26Maybe I just like the character of the janitor more.
- 23:29I do like the character of the janitor more than Brent.
- 23:32There's something charming about this movie that I'll watch it.
- 23:36I don't think I would say no if somebody was like, want to watch it.
- 23:40I was like, sure. Why not?
- 23:42But it's a little commitment for me. It's like it is 90 minutes.
- 23:45You can just kind of go in and out of I do love I do love all the songs.
- 23:50It's weird that it ends on Free Bird.
- 23:53Yeah. Our second was so strange.
- 23:56Like had they just because I mean, they made up new fucking songs for this movie.
- 24:00Had they just made up a free bird esk tune.
- 24:03Nobody would have thought twice about it.
- 24:05That would have been fucking funny.
- 24:06Also, for the license and right to play free bird, you could have like
- 24:10made the Willy fight actually look good.
- 24:13Don't call it the Willy fight.
- 24:16It was. I mean, when Nick Cage pulls out his tummy sticks and
- 24:22I do want the Willy's Wonderland theme to have it for reasons that are not going to go into.
- 24:29So creepy.
- 24:31It's a.
- 24:32I respect it.
- 24:33And we want you to have fun.
- 24:35Hey, shoulders, knees and toes and toes.
- 24:39This is still the only time that I ever hear anything beyond that part of that song ever.
- 24:45And then I have to remember that it's like, oh, yeah, it's like shins and hips and tummies.
- 24:51And no, that's years.
- 24:53That's the weird horny version that they made. It is not that.
- 24:56Those hips don't lie.
- 24:58That's the Shakira version.
- 24:59I disagree.
- 25:00That's the if you sing it to a child, you do not do the tummies and hips.
- 25:04I disagree.
- 25:05I don't remember a second part of the song or second verse.
- 25:08Like I remember that there is a second verse and it it does talk about other body parts.
- 25:14Eyes, ears, mouth and nose, head, shoulders, knees and toes.
- 25:18OK, but where do the tummies and the hips come in?
- 25:22For killing teens. Nice.
- 25:25Get us out of this one.
- 25:29Some teens die in a wild at heart, so wild at heart.
- 25:31Now we got to talk about the matrix.
- 25:36You get segue now.
- 25:38Take it back.
- 25:39That was really grasping to
- 25:43you don't need to get us out of there.
- 25:44What teens died in that.
- 25:46The car crash.
- 25:47Oh, I mean, the people who are who are teens.
- 25:51I mean, to be fair, if this were the 90s, we could be plain teens.
- 25:54That's correct.
- 25:55The other half of the Twin Peaks cast when they die.
- 26:00Right. All right.
- 26:00Yeah. Also, one of the two is Audrey Horn.
- 26:04So there was that one of like six Twin Peaks people in this.
- 26:08I forget how many. Yes.
- 26:09Now we'll get yeah, we'll get into that in a minute.
- 26:11You got to still talk about one more thing on Willie's Wonderland.
- 26:14And the Willie's Wonderland, the matrix of Willie's Wonderland,
- 26:16whether it's a good movie, a bad movie, a good Nicholas Cage performance,
- 26:20a bad Nicholas Cage performance or somewhere in the middle.
- 26:22Where where do you rank this film in this cage?
- 26:26They're not great movie, but the cage performance was solid.
- 26:29I think the janitor was the strong point of the whole movie.
- 26:31That's how he overcame all those obstacles through strength.
- 26:34Yeah, that's true.
- 26:36The sheer tyranny of will.
- 26:39Disgumption is too far.
- 26:41Yeah, I'm with that assessment.
- 26:43It is not a good movie like on paper.
- 26:46This doesn't fly.
- 26:47It's a great Nicholas Cage performance.
- 26:49It's magnetic.
- 26:51I'll use that magnetic is a good word for it.
- 26:53Yeah, I am not not a good film, but a very entertaining performance
- 26:58by Nicholas Cage.
- 26:59I forgot when he is going to fight the fairy and the chameleon.
- 27:06And he's got like is the menage a tour, a tour.
- 27:08And you know, he it just like when he even profiled and he just starts
- 27:12shaking when he kills a siren, Sarah.
- 27:16Yeah, Sarah, siren or siren, Sarah,
- 27:19by like snapping her neck.
- 27:22Oh, with his legs, with his legs.
- 27:24So he's just sitting on her face.
- 27:26And I'm like, oh, you can't can't show this in England.
- 27:29Did they face sitting in porn?
- 27:33What? Oh, this would have been like a decade and a half.
- 27:36We got to talk to Darryl.
- 27:37Oh, I mean, that's Darryl right now.
- 27:39Darryl. Yeah, Darryl.
- 27:40Darryl, can you watch me sitting porn?
- 27:42Can you sit on a face?
- 27:44Sit aloud.
- 27:45Now, the funniest part of the movie probably I found probably was
- 27:48when he took his break in the middle of a fight and just handed the girl the blade.
- 27:52That was one of my favorite parts.
- 27:55That's what I wanted to know.
- 27:56How long his breaks were, because like, how long was she fighting that chameleon?
- 28:00Yeah, like how long was she just alone trying to stab that thing?
- 28:04At least 10 minutes.
- 28:05BBC article. Why are people face sitting outside of Parliament?
- 28:09Why are people face sitting outside of Parliament?
- 28:12So it was only a decade ago now.
- 28:14That's still relevant.
- 28:15Yeah, they banned a bunch of different sex acts in porn in British,
- 28:21including face sitting.
- 28:22Do they return them to the people?
- 28:24Put them right back on the faces.
- 28:26I'll do my research tonight.
- 28:27Prohibition all over again.
- 28:29Yeah.
- 28:30So with face sitting instead of
- 28:33a face sitting, where do you put this movie on the grid?
- 28:38Bad, good, bad entertaining.
- 28:39Yeah, I'm with you.
- 28:41I had a good time.
- 28:42I skipped most of a 90 minute movie by fast forwarding.
- 28:45Yeah, I was going to say, it hardly qualifies as watching the movie.
- 28:49That's like how most people watch porn.
- 28:52You're just fast jumping through to the parts that are like,
- 28:56until the face, it gets gooey.
- 28:57That's good. Yeah. Until the face sitting.
- 28:59Yeah. And then you're like, OK, I've seen enough.
- 29:01I'm curious.
- 29:02What was your favorite animatronic death in this?
- 29:05Favorite animatronic death?
- 29:07Not Willie's. He just kind of smashed him.
- 29:10I liked the collie sticks he made out of like a mop.
- 29:14And then the spine rip might have been my favorite because that was pretty good.
- 29:17I remember the face sitting one.
- 29:19The gorilla gorilla gets a curb stomped into a urinal like.
- 29:23It's not necessarily the killing, but I'm still really a big fan of Tito
- 29:27getting hit in the balls with the shotgun. Yeah.
- 29:31Why did we have that?
- 29:32Why did we make this curse? How does it feel?
- 29:34Things feel pain. Bad idea.
- 29:37Yeah.
- 29:37You know, it was a brutal curb.
- 29:39Stomp is when he killed that guy at the beginning of all the dark.
- 29:41Oh, man.
- 29:44OK, yeah, that's our transition.
- 29:46Wild at heart. Yeah, that's not a bad segue.
- 29:49Sorry, did step on your toes.
- 29:51No, it's fine.
- 29:52I'm not good at them, apparently.
- 29:55I don't know why you're sour about this now.
- 29:57You've had two years to learn how to segue that movie.
- 30:02It starts fucking right right in there.
- 30:05Yeah, starts out hot.
- 30:07Credits over fire is our introduced to this movie is just.
- 30:12This is so David Lynch and I
- 30:16forgot how wildly David Lynch this movie is.
- 30:21He is just the third main character.
- 30:25Yeah, I love it.
- 30:27I mean, you've got the weird high voice guy for no reason.
- 30:29You've got the weird like murder of the mom's boyfriend.
- 30:34Like, fuck, it's so David Lynch.
- 30:36And the guy who quacked at the bar and spoke to me.
- 30:41What do you tell me?
- 30:42We weren't the pigeons spread diseases. Yeah.
- 30:46Which is not the only enigmatic character he beats, because you also have Pete
- 30:52from Twin Peaks. I forget what his character was.
- 30:54Double off something.
- 30:56He goes on about his dog and how his dog bites sometimes.
- 31:01And you probably picture his dog.
- 31:03Well, that was the guy that was that was a racer head to write.
- 31:07Yes, he's the racer head guy. Absolutely.
- 31:09This this movie is fucking wild.
- 31:11So Peter and I watched this one to get.
- 31:14Yeah. And weird on top.
- 31:18Peter and I watched this one together in about 10 minutes into the film.
- 31:22Peter looks at me and goes, is David Lynch a good director?
- 31:28And I didn't have an answer.
- 31:30Have you watched David Lynch make quinoa?
- 31:32I have not, but I'm going to.
- 31:34I have. I've been waiting.
- 31:36Wait, is that on Pornhub or?
- 31:38No, you can find it on YouTube or whatever.
- 31:40It's cowards.
- 31:42So he did like a series of things at one point.
- 31:45I don't know. He was just posting videos like he would post the weather report
- 31:48every day. But he would read the weather.
- 31:54I'm aware of.
- 31:55I want to pull the numbers out of a jar.
- 31:57For this quinoa one, it's like a black and white video that he shoots at night.
- 32:01And he's making quinoa.
- 32:04He's telling you his quinoa recipe and he's just smoking over this pot
- 32:09of water while it boils.
- 32:11And then he goes outside to have a cigarette.
- 32:13He just like rambles at you for like 20 minutes while the quinoa sets.
- 32:19And then he goes back in and makes himself a plate of like barely visible quinoa.
- 32:25Because it's nighttime and he's got like two lights on and it's in black and white.
- 32:29And he just eats quinoa and probably smokes another cigarette while he does it.
- 32:33OK, so he is a good director.
- 32:35He's insane. I don't know.
- 32:37I'm pretty sure I told this story when we first did Wild at Heart.
- 32:41But I used to work at a Barnes and Noble and the person who like got guests to come
- 32:45talk there, got David Lynch to come talk about a book he'd written.
- 32:49But David Lynch won't do a public appearance if he can't smoke quinoa.
- 32:52But David Lynch won't do a public appearance if he can't smoke inside.
- 32:55So most places have to like get special dispensation from like the city to have
- 33:00like indoor smoking just so he'll come and talk.
- 33:04That is a power play.
- 33:06David Lynch and David Chappelle like they're going to smoke.
- 33:11So this movie is crazy.
- 33:14I love it and hate it.
- 33:17Like, I think it sucks and it's amazing.
- 33:20It kind of describes David Lynch for me in general.
- 33:23Like, it's a whole thing of he wants you to feel things.
- 33:27And that's not always a good feeling he wants you to have.
- 33:32No, he definitely keeps you like from being comfortable.
- 33:37No, I feel disconcerted and very uncomfortable at certain parts of a lot of his movies,
- 33:42especially anytime Bobby is on screen.
- 33:44I just like feel slime on me.
- 33:47So Bobby Peru, Willem Dafoe's character, he has such a profound impact on me
- 33:54when I think about this movie that I forget that he's only in the last like 30 minutes.
- 33:59And his head gets blown off.
- 34:01Yeah. With the spine still attached.
- 34:03Yeah, that's gross.
- 34:06Not as gross as his teeth.
- 34:07What's really impressive in this movie is I think this is the creepiest
- 34:11Willem Dafoe I've seen and he can really play creepy.
- 34:13Like this is creepier than poor things Willem Dafoe.
- 34:18Yep. No, wait.
- 34:20I don't know what's worse, his mustache or his teeth or his like persona.
- 34:25Yeah, his personality.
- 34:27Every single thing about his character is gross.
- 34:30Oh, man. I will tell you, the thing that lives rent free in my brain
- 34:33from this movie is Mr. Big Round Balls.
- 34:36Oh, yeah. What a weird like is that a compliment or an insult?
- 34:40It's like I had a friend of mine who in college would just his insult was
- 34:44your big dick bitch.
- 34:46And it's like, thank you.
- 34:52So I got a question for all of you.
- 34:55Fuck Mary Kill Bobby Peru's mustache,
- 34:58Bobby Peru's teeth and Bobby Peru's personality.
- 35:01Oh, boy. The mustache.
- 35:03You know, OK.
- 35:05No, no, no, no, no, no.
- 35:07Mary, the mustache, the mustache.
- 35:09Kill the teeth.
- 35:10Fuck his personality.
- 35:12And there's no good options here.
- 35:15They're all terrible.
- 35:17God damn it, Nick.
- 35:19You know what?
- 35:19I think I'm going to fuck the teeth because they're small
- 35:22and I don't think they'll get in the way.
- 35:24They seem pretty gross and jagged.
- 35:26Yeah, they're not going to offer up a lot of resistance.
- 35:29This podcast is over.
- 35:31I'm turning this podcast around.
- 35:33Mary, the mustache and definitely kill his personality.
- 35:37All right. Lunchbox, your take.
- 35:39Oh, I don't know if I'll play this game.
- 35:42Go ahead. Get canceled with me.
- 35:44Mustache is maybe the most appealing.
- 35:46So maybe very bad. Kill his teeth.
- 35:49Oh, what does that leave?
- 35:50Oh, that leaves me.
- 35:51I'm talking about personality.
- 35:53Also, I mean, the guys in this room seen my attempts at relationships.
- 35:57I like an abusive relationship.
- 35:59Oh, I don't like myself that much.
- 36:01Don't don't be in a Bobby Peru.
- 36:04If there's one thing everyone should take away from Wild at Heart
- 36:08and this podcast, don't be Bobby Peru.
- 36:11Don't talk about yourself in third person.
- 36:13It don't take a leak in for the Lord Lord earn against your will.
- 36:19Apparently, he actually did.
- 36:21He accidentally non-functioning toilet.
- 36:24But why did they why did they use fake audio for that?
- 36:27It's so bad.
- 36:29It's just like somebody dumping a bucket of water.
- 36:32Well, they probably just looped it in.
- 36:34So just to make it, you know.
- 36:37I'm going to put my own version of that audio in right now.
- 36:41I'm going to go dump a bucket of water in the yard.
- 36:57The thing that sticks out that will not leave my brain
- 36:59is the close up of Bobby Peru smiling with the stocking over his head.
- 37:05Oh, yeah.
- 37:05Also, why why stocking like how is that a convincing.
- 37:09Because it's a classic.
- 37:11Yeah, but it it is a class.
- 37:13It's a fucking classic.
- 37:14I mean, look at raising Arizona.
- 37:16Look, they're just holding up a seed bank.
- 37:18Is it supposed to be like a dark stocking?
- 37:20Is that going to like because like they just look like them,
- 37:23but their noses are slightly smashed and you can't tell their hair.
- 37:26And I don't know, maybe from a distance.
- 37:28Let's go get some stockings.
- 37:30All right. I have some.
- 37:31Some. Well, I don't want to wear your stockings.
- 37:34And I don't want your giant head to stretch them out.
- 37:36I would stretch the crotch part out really hard.
- 37:40Then I'd put it on my head.
- 37:41All right. So lunchbox, give us a give us a like top level
- 37:45review of this movie.
- 37:46Like what happens? Give us the overall story.
- 37:50The overall story.
- 37:51Geez, that's a way too many notes on all that hard.
- 37:55So that could be problematic.
- 37:57But what general stories you would have the love story between sailor and Lulu.
- 38:02It starts off with fire and the curb stomping
- 38:07at the very beginning of it.
- 38:08Well, technically banister stomping.
- 38:10But it's a pretty normal scene where they're just like at some gala
- 38:13or something, take fear.
- 38:16And this guy just casually talks to him.
- 38:18And it's like, hey, I got hired to kill you.
- 38:20And it just whips out a knife, tries to kill him.
- 38:22It's head smashed.
- 38:24Do do do.
- 38:29Oh, I didn't get any metal.
- 38:31But I looked it up.
- 38:32It was Slaughterhouse by Power Man is that heavy metal song
- 38:36that constantly plays.
- 38:37Oh, that makes sense because they were all excited about Power Man playing.
- 38:41Yeah, it's the band they go to see.
- 38:43Yeah.
- 38:45I know where this.
- 38:46Yeah, Power Man knows Elvis.
- 38:47They're classic.
- 38:49They're classically trained.
- 38:51I forgot how long that scene goes on for.
- 38:53He sings the whole song.
- 38:55Yeah, it is.
- 38:56Yeah, like the whole song.
- 38:57This is like what?
- 38:58At the beginning, after he gets out of jail and they go to the concert
- 39:01and then the dude starts dancing with Lula,
- 39:03Saylor gets all caught up in his dancing.
- 39:06And then Saylor fights, stops the entire concert
- 39:10to confront the dude and smash his face into a cigarette.
- 39:13But the crowd and then he sees the concert with
- 39:17he just gets the toss of a mic and just crew insert.
- 39:20And then they go back to the room.
- 39:22I love how he's just like,
- 39:24you guys seem like real solid fellows and you got real big energy.
- 39:28And like he calls Elvis big.
- 39:31He's like, you guys, you know, this one hit it.
- 39:35So he's been like, what, 20 minutes just driving
- 39:37and banging in hotel rooms, smoking a lot of cigarettes.
- 39:42I tried to count in the movie.
- 39:43There's like 30 cigarettes smoking.
- 39:45So this way.
- 39:47Oh, so he does double dip a couple of times.
- 39:50Yeah, this would be like the David Lynch equivalent of a
- 39:55a drinking game, just a smoking game, just smoke
- 39:58when they smoke and see if you can. God.
- 40:00Put down a pack and a half of cigarettes in two hours.
- 40:03Oh, I love the first time I saw the movie,
- 40:06but she told him she was pregnant.
- 40:07He lit two cigarettes.
- 40:09I thought he was going to give her one.
- 40:11I'm like, OK, we're going to have to start smoking with two cigarettes.
- 40:16Yeah, he does that in prison again, too.
- 40:18Later on, it's so good.
- 40:20It's like this is how he deals.
- 40:23Well, right into his son, he's never seen her daughter.
- 40:26Peter and I were trying to figure this out.
- 40:28How many films does Nick Cage miss like large swaths of his children's lives
- 40:33because he's in jail?
- 40:34Because there's a lot of crossover with Connery, except it's his kids.
- 40:38Stolen.
- 40:39Mm hmm. And he again gets a stuffed animal for the kid.
- 40:43He has sailor has trouble getting the stuffed animal.
- 40:46This kid for the record.
- 40:48Yeah, no, he walks up and hands it to him.
- 40:50Well, like so easy.
- 40:52How hard, how difficult was that?
- 40:54But then he does have an anxiety attack and bolts moments later.
- 40:58I shouldn't be a daddy.
- 41:00We're skipping right to the end, but he has an anxiety attack.
- 41:03Oh, it's the break speed off of us gangsters
- 41:07and then Laura Palmer and gives him some advice.
- 41:10What does she tell him?
- 41:11Like it's with your wild at heart.
- 41:13Don't give up on love.
- 41:14So he's like, all right.
- 41:16I wrote down the specific line he told her.
- 41:19But just saying,
- 41:20uh, I'm a manslaughterer and a robber and I didn't have parental guidance.
- 41:27I just love how they keep saying manslaughterer.
- 41:30That's how is that the preferred nomenclature?
- 41:34Yeah, manslaughter.
- 41:35Well, he calls himself a murderer and like a larder and calls him out for it.
- 41:38Yeah. Yeah.
- 41:39She's like, you're exaggerating.
- 41:41Just a manslaughterer.
- 41:43I love the scene where at one point they jam out with the gas station
- 41:48and it's like tapping along and like slaves them off.
- 41:51And she smokes in the car in front of like three no smoking signs with the gas pump.
- 41:55And then they're driving down the road like sailors sleeping.
- 41:59And Lou was trying to like find some music.
- 42:01And like literally every station she turns to is like rape, murder, slaughter,
- 42:06a bunch of dead turtles, like probably a bunch of dead animals.
- 42:10A bunch of dead turtles, like probably using the corpses of the river.
- 42:15And she just has a panic attack and pulls over on the side of the road.
- 42:19So they have to find some metal thrashing out.
- 42:23Did he really flip out of that fucking car?
- 42:25I hope he did.
- 42:26It looks like it didn't look like it was cut.
- 42:29Based on everything I've seen interview wise from him in that time period.
- 42:36Yeah, I'd say he did.
- 42:37He probably did do that back flip out of the car and then like, oh, wow.
- 42:41Didn't you go on a talk show and do like a flip?
- 42:44It was like super.
- 42:46Yeah. Yeah, he was hyped.
- 42:49Yeah, he was hyped for that maybe.
- 42:51He understands how to make a movie Texas style.
- 42:56I didn't see any cowboy hats, but yeah, they didn't make that porno Texas style.
- 43:00And I wonder what do they mean by that?
- 43:02And then they show you what they mean by that.
- 43:05Everything's bigger in Texas.
- 43:06Everything's bigger in Texas.
- 43:08And don't forget the silent cowboy and I'm assuming more than a producer
- 43:12who just stared down.
- 43:15It was just the cowboy and the business
- 43:17to stare down sailor as he was gone.
- 43:19He's right.
- 43:20We're so far out of gas, I think.
- 43:24This movie's so fucking wild.
- 43:26Yeah. At heart.
- 43:28I don't know.
- 43:28I just feel like so much of it is like these weird vignettes and like
- 43:32none of it really matters.
- 43:34It's just sort of adventures of sailor and Lula.
- 43:37Well, it's based off of a series of shorter pulp novels. Right.
- 43:41So which I mean, it makes perfect sense that that would be
- 43:45how this shook out, but it is pretty weird to watch as a sequence.
- 43:49Yeah. Yeah.
- 43:51I mean, it's tied together about as well as it could be, I think. Yeah.
- 43:55A little more coherent than most of David Lynch's other stuff, though,
- 43:58because he's not always the biggest fan of like
- 44:01a literal logic, a kind of dream logic.
- 44:04And time is fluid.
- 44:07So like it's a lot more structured than it's difficult work, I'd say at least.
- 44:10But it does have like the big grand of vignettes on the road,
- 44:13kind of like the straight story did.
- 44:16I did enjoy how no villains in this movie
- 44:20got their comeuppance except for Bobby Purdue.
- 44:23Peru Peru.
- 44:25Yeah, Bobby Peru got his head.
- 44:27Yeah, the mom never got her way.
- 44:30In fact, her photo melted when it got wet.
- 44:34They did the wicked witch thing.
- 44:36She was the wicked witch.
- 44:38For the water on the picture.
- 44:40She didn't have a mental break.
- 44:41So she kind of hurt.
- 44:43Yeah, she got broken mentally.
- 44:45And that was great.
- 44:46But Santos didn't have anything bad happen to him.
- 44:49No. Other than I guess he didn't get that pussy. No.
- 44:54And what's her face? Isabella Rossellini just books it.
- 44:58She's just gone in the wind with her bad hair.
- 45:01Yeah, weird wigs.
- 45:03So many weird bad wigs in this movie, but like clearly bad wigs.
- 45:08I think Lynch just doesn't give a shit about that kind of stuff.
- 45:11Yeah, I think he's got an aesthetic that kind of borders on like
- 45:16more mental fuckery than visual
- 45:22cohesion.
- 45:23That's a necessity.
- 45:25Yeah, I think that's a good assessment.
- 45:27Yeah, I love it, though.
- 45:30I really do enjoy it.
- 45:33Josie and I were watching this and we're like, man,
- 45:36it's probably about time to watch Mulholland Drive again.
- 45:39Again, probably.
- 45:42I so backed up wild at heart.
- 45:44I loved the like, oh, man.
- 45:46So I'm I really enjoy it.
- 45:49I get into the the weird and wildness of a David Lynch aesthetic for the movie.
- 45:54And I'll only talk about this one like for this moment.
- 45:58But everything from like the cuts to fire
- 46:02and like the the memories, like the way he shows memories, the
- 46:07a really saturated filters on the lenses and everything.
- 46:12It's such a he's a better Wes Anderson.
- 46:16Like he has his own clear style that nobody else can do.
- 46:21I'm so mad that I actually really agree with you.
- 46:23Like this is fucking spot on.
- 46:25Yeah, like nobody makes a David Lynch movie, but David Lynch.
- 46:29Like nobody makes a Wes Anderson movie like Wes Anderson, but you could.
- 46:34And you just need to know
- 46:38130 like famous people to fill out the cast.
- 46:43One Bill Murray.
- 46:45Yeah. But I don't know.
- 46:47I don't know something about David Lynch's style is so
- 46:52just unbelievable to me.
- 46:54And like, I just never know what's going to happen.
- 46:57And so when I watch one of his movies, I'm like, oh, fuck.
- 47:00Why is it this now?
- 47:01Oh, OK. Like, oh, this room's all made out of giant red curtains.
- 47:06Cool.
- 47:07Well, oh, this is 30 minutes now.
- 47:09OK, we're doing that.
- 47:10Well, when Peter when Peter asked me, is David Lynch a good director?
- 47:12My only thing was, I think he's a good director for David Lynch films.
- 47:16Yeah. Yeah.
- 47:18He's quite good at those. Yeah.
- 47:21Not for the typical film, although he did almost make a star
- 47:24which would have been bizarre.
- 47:26I cannot imagine.
- 47:29David Lynch is a rebel moon. Yeah.
- 47:32Well, OK, just he made Dune.
- 47:35So let's think about David Lynch's Dune.
- 47:38Yeah, I try not to on a regular basis in a Star Wars setting.
- 47:43So he's had Toto do a soundtrack.
- 47:45Would Star Wars just be all yes?
- 47:49Maybe. Yeah.
- 47:51I want I want backward talking Darth Vader.
- 47:54Yeah, that would be such a movie.
- 47:56If only we could live in that reality one day one day.
- 48:00But it would be it would be very unique to be the most unique Star Wars movie
- 48:04they made.
- 48:04It could just be a one off single episode of The Mandalorian and I'd be happy.
- 48:10Yeah, if only we could get that 45 minutes of just like David Lynch
- 48:14Star Wars story, that'd be pretty great.
- 48:16It would just be the Christmas special backwards.
- 48:19Oh, I like that.
- 48:21You mean Tobor, it's robots spelled backwards.
- 48:24Tobor, it's robots.
- 48:27So on the grid of good movie, good cage, bad movie, bad cage, good, bad, bad, good.
- 48:33Where do we put Wild at Heart?
- 48:35I think it is a good movie that is weird and I hate and love.
- 48:40And it is a great cage performance. Now.
- 48:43OK, I'll answer this.
- 48:45But I also want to say like of the matchup, I think it's just awesome
- 48:49that we had these two movies that have different approaches to the language
- 48:54with Nicolas Cage saying nothing in one film and the almost romanticized
- 49:00approach to language that you get in this movie because it like
- 49:05they don't talk like people.
- 49:06Like they're talking almost like it's a period piece.
- 49:10But the period could really be, I mean, anytime pre cell phone.
- 49:14Yeah. Just I don't know.
- 49:16I love the way they said things like when they get in the car
- 49:20to when Saylor and Lula get in the car to take off and it's like stab it and steer.
- 49:25It's like that's a fucking great way to say just punch it, Chewie.
- 49:30Yeah. Even mentions how she has a strange way of saying things.
- 49:35Yeah. And it's the whole cast like everybody just talks kind of strangely.
- 49:40But there's just a love affair for talking
- 49:44and like the way you can say things in this film.
- 49:48Well, you mentioned how like David Lynch has his signature.
- 49:51Like if you know what to look for, you can tell some things to David Lynch thing.
- 49:54And like odd dialogue is definitely one of them.
- 49:57Like you have some pretty natural dialogue in Twin Peaks.
- 50:00It was really just David Lynch doing David Lynch.
- 50:02It's weirdly timed dialogue.
- 50:05People almost seem out of sync.
- 50:06Yeah. Like there's almost a meter to like how he writes things out
- 50:11or has people say it that just kind of like throws it.
- 50:15Yeah. Like working in a odd way, not like not the kind you usually see.
- 50:20It's a very unique kind.
- 50:22Yeah. It gets your attention for sure.
- 50:24And it made me pay attention.
- 50:27I could pull up any scene in this movie and be like, oh, man, I fucking love this.
- 50:31I love this line right here just because of delivery or oddness.
- 50:37I took note so many lines they they said because they were just great one liners.
- 50:42I forget what the last thing you think.
- 50:44Give me your top quote.
- 50:46I do like the last one he told his what was the last advice he gave his son was
- 50:52they win before you end up dancing at the end of a rope with no music.
- 50:57The last advice he wanted to give his son before leaving his life forever.
- 51:01Yeah, he's something he met like 10 minutes ago. Yeah.
- 51:05Yeah, he's somebody just that the car is like, you know what?
- 51:08You guys would be better off without me.
- 51:10Peace. And Pace just gives him his cool look.
- 51:13His cool guy face like, oh, I'm intimidated by this new daddy.
- 51:20New daddy.
- 51:22That envy the line.
- 51:24My favorite line is probably the the line with the good witch.
- 51:27The I'm a manslaughter and a robber and I didn't have parental guidance,
- 51:32which he brings up at the beginning of the movie by telling her about
- 51:36when he's describing how he started smoking at four years old, I think.
- 51:41And he's like, my mom died of cancer.
- 51:43My dad died of cancer drinking.
- 51:45Pretty much everybody in my family died of that.
- 51:48But I didn't really have much parental guidance.
- 51:49At least that's what the public defendant kept telling me.
- 51:53Yeah. And I like I was like, he was a good man.
- 51:55He's stuck by me.
- 51:57That's the closest to a father figure he ever had was his public defender.
- 52:01Yeah, so that's the only guy he's had in his life.
- 52:06It's like this.
- 52:08This is a great, great film and such an interesting performance from that cage.
- 52:14And one I don't think we've seen a performance like this.
- 52:17We haven't seen from him really since.
- 52:19It is pretty unique amongst the.
- 52:21That's might be the lynchiness of it.
- 52:23This film definitely came out in 1990 and it's a
- 52:28before his big action movie turn
- 52:32and kind of after some of his more adventurous early films,
- 52:38Vampire's Kiss and stuff like that.
- 52:41I don't know. It seems like it's such a first wave cage kind of film.
- 52:46It was definitely a good peanut butter jelly of weirdness.
- 52:49I think even read he got him out of method acting
- 52:52because David Lynch was kind of looser with the script and rewrites
- 52:55and wanted him to like play with the character more.
- 52:57So I think it ended up influencing him a lot from what I read at least.
- 53:01But it is a good blend. It's not his typical weirdness.
- 53:05Yeah, I mean, you get a little bit of just David Lynch leaking in.
- 53:10And it's really nice.
- 53:13But there's the important thing of that was his actual jacket
- 53:16that he gave Laura Dern afterwards.
- 53:18So that's insane that it was just out of his closet.
- 53:21It wouldn't be the first time he's brought his own personal properties
- 53:25because like, well, maybe it was the first.
- 53:27It might have been the first. Yeah.
- 53:29But the car that he drives in Sorcerer's Apprentice was his car.
- 53:34And that's pretty cool, too.
- 53:36Well, and one thing I don't think I've heard anybody mention
- 53:38is that that jacket is in a video game series.
- 53:41Like there is a primary character in the Yakuza game series that wears that.
- 53:46Majima wears that exact. And he's my favorite character in the whole series.
- 53:53And it also represents individual freedom.
- 53:57And whatever the line was.
- 54:00Yeah, I've been trying to find like a good quality snake skin jacket
- 54:06for the last two years now.
- 54:07And I got to say, it's not something I'm going to find online.
- 54:12I'm going to have to start going to like snake dealers.
- 54:14Snakeman. Yeah, snakeman.
- 54:16And start talking to.
- 54:18This is how we actually meet Nicolas Cage.
- 54:20You just in like talking to a snake dealer. Yeah.
- 54:23Oh, I'm also Nick Cage's snake guy.
- 54:26It would be beautiful.
- 54:27Can we get that guy on the podcast? Probably.
- 54:31I'll throw back in to where we were and say that I fucking love this movie.
- 54:35It's a great movie and a great Nicolas Cage.
- 54:39I'm high on this horse.
- 54:42So I shouldn't be smoking horse.
- 54:44Don't smoke horse.
- 54:46That's when you get that weird high voice and talk about pigeons
- 54:49or whatever the fuck. High on a horse.
- 54:51That could be sniffing glue.
- 54:53Oh, yeah. Get that hoof.
- 54:56I'm a hoof man myself.
- 54:58Huffing mouth disease.
- 55:00You don't eat it.
- 55:01All right. So what movie goes forward?
- 55:04And we'll pitch it to lunchbox first.
- 55:06Yeah. Which movie do you think should go forward?
- 55:08Did I need to do the good cage?
- 55:11Well, I mean, I went into this bias.
- 55:13I think it's great cage. Great movie.
- 55:15Even one of the lower David Lynch movies is better than most other movies.
- 55:19In my opinion.
- 55:20Yeah, they just offer so much.
- 55:24They're rich in world setting and for nothing else.
- 55:27And click. Oh, God.
- 55:29Don't even. OK, we're going back.
- 55:32We're talking about Dell.
- 55:33Yeah, I love Dell.
- 55:35I'm making a sandwich.
- 55:37I love Crispin Glover and I love Crispin Glover.
- 55:40I'm so glad you said that.
- 55:41I had a whole like page on Dell.
- 55:43He's one of my favorite bits of the movie.
- 55:45It's the same thing for something that's like two minutes long.
- 55:48Yeah, it's our second Crispin Glover
- 55:51like cameo in a Nicolas Cage movie.
- 55:54And it's just insane.
- 55:57It doesn't leave an impression.
- 55:59The guy obsessed with.
- 56:00Who has cockroaches in his underwear.
- 56:02He was putting a cockroach on his butthole.
- 56:05On his anus.
- 56:06Yeah, right on his anus.
- 56:08Also like middle of the night in the dark.
- 56:10Isla sandwiches.
- 56:12What are you doing, honey?
- 56:14I'm making my.
- 56:17He's just destroying the sandwiches like he makes sandwiches
- 56:20and then dices them up like with his face.
- 56:24Oh, yes.
- 56:25I just can't get over his weird like weird butthole dance with the roaches.
- 56:29He's like, rising around.
- 56:32He doesn't look sad, though.
- 56:35I mean, would you with roaches on your butt?
- 56:38Check back next week.
- 56:41Let me see if that was on the something.
- 56:43Yeah.
- 56:44OK.
- 56:45What are you going to rock paper scissors?
- 56:47Well, I was going to finish this up real quick
- 56:49so that I can get distracted again.
- 56:52Get high on that horse.
- 56:53Yeah. Lunchbox.
- 56:54Your opinion. Yes.
- 56:55My pain was wild at heart.
- 56:57Well, yeah. Not to lead the witness.
- 56:59Yes.
- 57:00All right, Nick.
- 57:01I'm a wild at heart guy.
- 57:03This is definitely my movie.
- 57:04You're wearing the shirt.
- 57:05I was going to say Primal, but I guess I guess I'm outvoted here.
- 57:09I'll go wild at her.
- 57:10Hmm. If primal's on the table,
- 57:13I'd have to go wild at heart.
- 57:15Yeah. But I mean, I'm not going to say anything.
- 57:17This is a great movie.
- 57:18It's fucking weird and I am uncomfortable, but I really like it.
- 57:23And Willy's Wonderland is fun and people should watch it.
- 57:25It's 90 minutes.
- 57:26Fucking crush it. Yeah.
- 57:27But it's only 20 if you skip all of it like Peter did.
- 57:30Yeah, man. It rules just like kind of get all to the action.
- 57:34You know, that might be a better way to watch that movie.
- 57:36You can skip all the teenagers doing dumb shit
- 57:39and you can just get like him fighting robots and playing pinball and dancing.
- 57:43It rules. Yeah.
- 57:45I think it would have been way better if it was just no dialogue
- 57:48and fighting monsters.
- 57:50There's like a couple lines of dialogue from the sheriff.
- 57:52Look at guy who owned the place at the beginning and end of the movie.
- 57:55That's all you need. Yep.
- 57:58You know, it just came to me now,
- 57:59but I do really like that he doesn't talk much like Link never talks.
- 58:04So he's just your silent protagonist.
- 58:07I did have a thought of he very much seemed like a video game protagonist.
- 58:11He was literally just walking around quietly dealing with problems,
- 58:14taking quests as presented to him and doing the quest.
- 58:18Yeah, he would engage in conversations.
- 58:20Now, if only the D and D players would do that.
- 58:23Oh, well, shit.
- 58:26Thanks for being here. Lunchbox.
- 58:27Do you have anything that you want to pitch and promote?
- 58:30Yeah. Where can people find you? Yeah.
- 58:32I'm always terrible at this.
- 58:34You can find me on Instagram is the main place I post my art at lunchbox underscore
- 58:38ink with the K because I think I'm clever.
- 58:41That's where I post all my drawings and my tattoo stuff, which is my day job.
- 58:44I manager over a tattoo shop over by UNCC over here in Charlotte. Cool.
- 58:50And then I do digital illustration and such on the side when I'm not busy drawing.
- 58:54Mo
- 59:24I'm going to remember again if I do.
- 59:25That's awesome.
- 59:26I hope it's exactly the same.
- 59:28He has 118 films and he's five upcoming on according to be including another
- 59:36Lords of War, which is now the Carpenter's Son.
- 59:40Oh, yeah. The horror Jesus movie.
- 59:42Yeah. Horror Jesus.
- 59:43The Gunslingers, Long Legs and Noir TV series.
- 59:48I'm assuming that's Spider-Man.
- 59:50Yeah. But it only says two episodes.
- 59:52Interesting. We'll find out.
- 59:54So one hundred and twenty something cages on the horizon.
- 59:58One hundred and twenty three.
- 59:59Yeah, you got it.
- 1:00:00Yeah, I can do this. It's like 50 something more.
- 1:00:03It's great.
- 1:00:05I feel like I hope they've gotten better as I've thought.
- 1:00:08Do you have a favorite Nicholas Cage hairstyle or hairline to draw?
- 1:00:13Oh, that's a really good question.
- 1:00:15I appreciate that question.
- 1:00:17Raising Arizona hair is fun.
- 1:00:19Oh, like those fights. Good hair.
- 1:00:21I've got to do a lot of long hair cages, a lot of facial hair cages.
- 1:00:26I like drawing the facial hair cages.
- 1:00:27You know, you get some more distinct.
- 1:00:29You know, you get to have some fun in the chin area instead of having to get it
- 1:00:32just right.
- 1:00:33I will say I do not care for his beard in Willy's Wonderland.
- 1:00:38I think it needs to come back along the under jaw portion more.
- 1:00:43Agreed. Like he cuts it too far away from the Adam's apple.
- 1:00:47Not his strongest beard he's had.
- 1:00:49It's not like red.
- 1:00:51It's not like drive angry or yeah. Yeah.
- 1:00:54Or Pete.
- 1:00:55He was solving. Yeah.
- 1:00:56Beard makes a good beard.
- 1:00:57Pigs a good beard.
- 1:00:59And he wears a union suit.
- 1:01:01I think it's at a list of like the Ray Ray Ray, his facial hair or body.
- 1:01:07We talk about Stern and Bush.
- 1:01:08I go by Stern and Bush a lot.
- 1:01:10Which Sean's ex wife apparently.
- 1:01:14Yeah. Meredith sent me a voice message last week being like,
- 1:01:18you're going to think I'm stupid for this, but
- 1:01:22I thought you were saying Stern man Bush for the longest time.
- 1:01:25Not Stern and Bush.
- 1:01:27Which is 100% what it's going to be from now on.
- 1:01:29It is a stern man Bush.
- 1:01:31Just a gruff pubic area.
- 1:01:34Yeah, you get it.
- 1:01:36Hmm. Stern man Bush.
- 1:01:37So you need to rate the Bush and the like facial hair her move,
- 1:01:43which while that art did have stern and Bush some, I believe.
- 1:01:46They did. He did.
- 1:01:48Also, how far back the hairline is.
- 1:01:50The that too.
- 1:01:51The chest hair in Wild at Heart always gets me because it looks like
- 1:01:55he had it shaved in like a capital I and then grew the pack hair back out
- 1:02:01like he had shaved it away previously.
- 1:02:03It's just thicker in the center and the underlining.
- 1:02:07Well, because Valley Girl would have been around before that.
- 1:02:11So he probably was shaved.
- 1:02:13Yeah. Is that the one review that's on the beach and had like a Y on it?
- 1:02:17It looked like it was in a permissible shape.
- 1:02:19Yeah. I remember Valley Girl.
- 1:02:22It looks very strangely intentional.
- 1:02:24Like God doesn't grow a facial just hair in this sort of shape.
- 1:02:30Our God does. Nicholas Cage.
- 1:02:33Last thoughts, anything?
- 1:02:35Both these movies are worth watching. Go watch them.
- 1:02:37Yeah. But definitely watch Wild at Heart when you're ready to pay attention.
- 1:02:41Oh, yeah.
- 1:02:42Willy's Wonderland. You can chill.
- 1:02:44Yeah, that's Willy's Wonderland while you make dinner. Yeah.

- 1:03:22Yeah. Sometime when I go visit my brother down in Orlando,
- 1:03:25I'll have to stop over
- 1:03:29North Carolina and maybe get get a Nicolas Cage tattoo from you.
- 1:03:32I have to tattoo Nick Cage at some point on somebody.
- 1:03:36I am amazed you haven't.
- 1:03:38Yeah, I don't know how I haven't.
- 1:03:40Like I'll do it on myself. I need to tattoo myself several times.
- 1:03:43I just started the project of tattooing my left arm, which has been fun.
- 1:03:47Yeah, I hope to be your first person.
- 1:03:51They're not non self non person.
- 1:03:53Your first non person to tattoo Nick. I'm Nick.
- 1:03:58You should get the pig from pig.
- 1:03:59Oh, you should.
- 1:04:02All right, man. Well, thank you so much for being here.
- 1:04:03Thank you very much. Thanks for having me again.
- 1:04:06You guys are. Bye bye.
- 1:04:10Thank you.
- 1:04:13Bye bye.
- 1:04:19Now, just in case we need it,
- 1:04:21I'm going to say we're going to talk to Darryl real quick about Bobby
- 1:04:25Peru and put it in right here.
- 1:04:29OK, we'll edit that out when we never get a hold of Darryl.
- 1:04:33Correct. Yeah, OK.
- 1:04:39I haven't seen that movie in such a long time.
- 1:04:41My my real solid only memory of it.
- 1:04:44Wait, there were tiny people in it at some point.
- 1:04:46And then I think there was the like trash man,
- 1:04:51like not trash person.
- 1:04:54Let me rephrase.
- 1:04:55There was the person by the dumpsters.
- 1:04:57That's like a jump scare with the classic David Lynch like bar.
- 1:05:03Just read trash bag out of nowhere.
- 1:05:06Yeah, trash man.
- 1:05:08That's all I remember.
- 1:05:09I think there's a dead person.
- 1:05:10Oh, no.
