Transcript
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: What's up, guys?
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to another week of Health Unscripted with Dr.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: D.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: My name is Dr.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: Ashley Dwyer.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: This week is going to be a short, kind of candid podcast all on the topic of being committed versus being interested, what the difference is, what it means for your goals, and how to shift from interested into committed.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: So if you haven't already picked up on it by now, committed is where we want to be.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: And that literally applies to any goal, anything we're looking to achieve in our life.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Yes, we're interested in a lot of things, especially if you're like myself and you got ADD and your brain bounces from idea to idea to idea to idea.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: We are super interested in a random plethora of things, right?
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: But just because we're interested in something doesn't mean it's going to come to fruition.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: It doesn't mean we're going to excel at it.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: It doesn't mean it's going to happen or we're going to see the results, right?
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Like if you follow TikTok manifestation gurus or Instagram manifestation gurus, they tell you, like, just imagine it, put it out into the universe and let it go and it'll happen to you.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: Listen, I'm a little woo-woo myself.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: I make this joke all the time that like white girl with a nose ring, astrology, woo-y, wooiness.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: I love it.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: Like I'm here for it.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: I am not putting those powers down.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: But if you really want to achieve certain goals, you're going to have to work your ass off for it.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: It doesn't just like magically show up on your door.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: In our case, with health goals, whether it be I want a six-pack, I want to get stronger, I want to build a big old booty.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: I want to heal my relationship with food.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: I want food freedom.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: I want to stop tracking or start tracking.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: None of that stuff is just going to show up.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: I wish I could just wake up in the morning and have a big ass butt, a big ass.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: I wish you could just wake up the next morning and have a six-pack of abs and be able to eat whatever you want.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Unfortunately, manifestation and being interested in those things are not going to get us there.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: So we actually have to be committed to the steps to get those goals.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: And that is what we're going to talk about in this podcast is going over all the steps, all the things, what the difference is and why it's so important to differentiate between whether you are actually interested or whether you are actually committed.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: So, what do these things mean?
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: So when we get on client calls with potential clients, something I used to ask a lot and something I do ask my clients now when we're going towards goals is first off, what is your goal?
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: We need to, we need to pinpoint a goal.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: A lot of the time it's like, I want energy to play with my kids.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: I want to be healthier.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: I want to lose like, you know, such and such, anywhere from 10 to 50 plus pounds.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: I want to lower the size, like being a smaller pant size.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: Whatever the goal is, we we nail down the goal, right?
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: And then I will ask, how important is it for you to reach that goal?
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: And sometimes we'll get like, eh, you know, it's cool.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: I would like to do this, but it's not like something that's really pressing on me right now.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: Or it's like literally, I like I want it yesterday.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: I am in it.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: I need this goal to happen now.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: And I like to differentiate between those things because that is how we decide if we're just interested in something or if we're committed to something.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: Because the difference is if we're interested in a goal, like if I was just interested in bulking right now and putting on size, I would not be consistent.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: I would likely not be growing at all because I'm just interested.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: I would be working out when it's convenient for me.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: Um, I would be going about my day-to-day just like, eh, if it happens, that's cool.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: If it doesn't, that's also cool.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: It's not really gonna affect my life.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: No, interested means we do things when it's convenient and it won't change our life if the goal happens or not.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: When you're committed to a goal and when you're like, this is exactly what I freaking want, and I'm gonna do whatever it takes to get it, that is committed.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: So there are no obstacles in your way.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: You find a solution, you find a way around that obstacle, you make the goal happen.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: So if I'm committed to bulking, I am hitting my calories every single day and hitting my macros every day.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: I am working out all of the days that I am programmed to work out so that I know that I'm putting on sufficient muscle mass.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: I am getting enough sleep every night, no if, ands, or buts.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: I'm getting six to seven hours, or excuse me, seven to eight hours.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: Who gets six hours?
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: Not me.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: Sorry, adjusting my headphones.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: Um, not me.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: So getting the required sleep, taking the rest days, eating what I'm supposed to.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: Honestly, keeping alcohol sometimes to a minimum, even though we're in a bulking phase.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: Alcohol really disrupts the way our body works and our metabolism.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: So, same thing goes if you're interested in losing weight, right?
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: You will kind of stick to your diet.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: You'll eat clean, but then on the weekends you'll like go crazy with your friends.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: We'll do bottomless branch, we'll drink here and there, we will order, you know, foods that maybe we know aren't the best for us.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: We'll work out when we can, but it's not like in our schedule.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: It's just if we have time, we'll go.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: Meanwhile, if we are committed to losing those 10 pounds or losing weight, we will go to the gym every day we're supposed to.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: We will stick to our goals and order something healthy at restaurants because we want to feel good and lose the weight.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: We will keep drinking to a minimum.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: Okay, so we do things when they're not committed, or excuse me, we do things when they're not convenient when we are committed.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: In fact, it's probably super inconvenient sometimes and the amount of sacrifice we have to make when we are committed to a goal.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: But that is what is needed.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: I did a whole story on Instagram yesterday about, oh, hold on.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: My headphones just there we go, went out.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: What is happening?
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: Techno, yo, you guys, white girl, speaking of white girl with a nose ring, Mercury's in retrograde until May 14th.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: And I swear all technology has been like against.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: I'm not gonna sit here and say against me, because it's probably been against everybody, but like Instagram's not really working.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: This tech, this microphone and headphones that I've never had problems with is not really working right now.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: Like, hopefully, this podcast gets posted tomorrow.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: Like, what is going on?
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: Uh anyway, lost my train of thought, which we do when we have the AD, the ADDs.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: When you are committed, you will do things that are inconvenient and the sacrifice that you have to make to do it.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: So yesterday I was saying I created a story on my Instagram about how, you know, if you want goals, like you got to stop comparing yourself to other people, you got to stop tearing other people down to make yourself look better.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: You need to put your head down and your blinders on and focus on you and what's in front of you.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: That is also what is needed when you are committed to a goal, not just interested, is just that dedication that I'm gonna show up every day.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: I really, really want this, and this is what I'm gonna do to make it happen.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: So the reason I feel like this is so important and why ask prospective clients and why even remind current clients about this is because A, if your goal is not big enough or your why is not big enough, you're just gonna be interested in it and you're not gonna care if you get it or not, which is going to essentially, you know, let's say you do sign up for a plan, you're gonna have acid, you're not really gonna give it your all, you're not really gonna be coachable, you're not gonna show up week to week and really put in the effort of what is necessary for the lifestyle change for the results that you want.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: Whereas if you're committed, you'll be like, I'm in it, let's go, tell me what to do.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna follow this stuff.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: Or yeah, I had a bad week, but it's cool.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: What can we do to fix this for the next week?
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: I'm totally in.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: Like you still show up.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: Do you see the difference there?
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: You have like the half-assers versus the full assers.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: Always use your full ass.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: Is that what I'm gonna name this podcast?
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: Never use, never half-ass anything.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: Always use your full ass.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: I saw that on a meme one time and loved it.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: So that is what I think is truly important.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: And so if your goal and your why isn't big enough, we need to choose one that is.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: And usually how that happens is we choose something that invokes emotion.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: So, for example, for me and my health goals back in the day, like going through the thyroid issues that I did and feeling like absolute trash.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: I was hiring so many doctors and functional medicine doctors and health coaches.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: I went through the gamut to find out what would work.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: I was committed to a process to find out what was going on with me and how to fix it.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: It was extremely expensive.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: It was extremely zero fun.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: Like I had to stop working out for a while.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: I had to eat foods I didn't want.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: I had so many supplements I was on at one point, um, that it was just so defeating.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: But I was committed to making the change and I did.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: So that was what I needed.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: My why was to just feel like a normal human being again, like not feel like trash, not have my hair shedding like crazy.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: Like I wanted the answers and I was committed to finding those answers.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: Now I am committed to my bulk because I'm not just interested in the bulk.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: I have been interested in a bulk in the past, but I was always afraid of eating.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: I was like, eh, if I put on more muscle, cool, I'd love to put on more muscle, but like I wasn't committed to the process.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: And now, after going through a bulk for several months, I will genuinely sit here and say that fat loss is easy.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: I'm sorry, y'all.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: Fat loss is easy.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: Putting on muscle mass is the hardest thing I have ever done.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: And that's because it takes so much commitment and so much patience and so much consistency that, like, if I underat for a day, the scale goes down like a pound or two.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: And I am so annoyed the next morning.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: And it's like, well, it's your own fault, bro.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: Like, you didn't eat, you didn't hit your macros.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: And I know these are like problems that some of you don't have, but the moral of the story is just like, if I didn't stay committed to the goal, the scale would have never budged.
- 9:47SPEAKER_00: I would never be up 12 pounds right now.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: And it might sound easy if you're in the position of like just eat more.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: And it's like, yeah, I get it.
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: I get it.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: But when you're almost eating 30,000 calories a day, it's a lot.
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: And when you can't eat dairy and when you stay away from gluten and you don't want to feel like trash because you don't want a dirty bulk, it's a lot.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: Food becomes your whole life.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: And, you know, it's mentally wearing just like a cut is.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: But I'm committed to the process.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: So what I am looking for you guys to do is determine your why and figure out why it's super important for you.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: Why is it so important for you to heal your relationship with food?
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: Why is it so important for you to be healthy and be around for your children long term?
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: Why is it so important for you to work out and not be out of breath, right?
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: Like create that emotional component behind your ultimate goal and then decide how important is this goal to me?
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: Am I interested in it or am I committed to it?
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: And then we want to get you from interested into committed.
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: We want to get you into that category.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: And what that takes is just like it sounds so complicated.
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: Like, what are the steps?
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: What do I need to do?
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: All it takes is the decision to flip from interested to committed.
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: All you have to do is ask yourself, what would, I'm gonna use myself, Ashley 2.0, what does Ashley 2.0 look like?
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: What does the version of you look like that has that ultimate physique you want, the energy levels you want, the health you want?
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: What does that person look like?
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: How does that person act?
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: How does that person show up in their day-to-day?
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: And then you need to do all the things that Ashley 2.0 would do.
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: Would Ashley 2.0 sleep in and skip her workout?
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: No.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: That bitch would get up and she would go.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: She would eat her banana and her pre-workout breakfast and chug, chug some coffee and she would go to the gym.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: So that is what you 2.0, that's what you 1.0 is going to do to become you 2.0.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: Would you 2.0, you know, forget your goals and just like slam a whole pizza at night, knowing that like you want to lose 10 pounds in four weeks?
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: No.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: U 2.0 would not do that.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: U2.0 would maybe have a slice and be like, thank you.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: I had what I wanted.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: I got the taste down.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: I'm going to move on because I have goals that I'm trying to hit.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: Committed means not sacrificing what you want in the short term for the long-term goal.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: So we have to weigh every decision as if we are already that person in the future with those goals.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: And that is what commitment is.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: There is nothing that can get in my way.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: There is nothing that can stop me from achieving this goal.
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: So a little, I wish I had like a was able to attach like an exercise to this.
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: But if you take a piece of paper, write your goal at the top, just write your goal at the top.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: Next line, I want you to put your why.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: Why do I want to achieve this goal?
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: Just real simple.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: It doesn't have to be the emotional component yet, just a real simple what it means for you to achieve this goal.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: The next line, I want you to put the emotion behind why you want to achieve this goal.
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: I want to achieve this goal.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: And you know what?
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: Sometimes, guys, it's like for me, I wanted to bulk because I felt so thin and didn't like my body, right?
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: So there's an emotional component to it.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: Um I didn't want to.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: I wanted to put on more muscle.
- 13:00SPEAKER_00: I didn't want to be thin and look weak and, you know, not have a booty.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: Like to be honest, this is this is what it is.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: So I was committed to doing the things to not be that way.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: So there was an emotional component on it.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: Now on the next line, I want you to put what, you know, your name 2.0 looks like.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: Like, what does that person look like?
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: How does that person act?
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: What are the decisions that person does?
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: And then under that, I want you to put all the things that you 1.0 need to start doing to become the 2.0 version of you.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: And then commit yourself to those things.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: And I guarantee you, you will be like unrecognizable even in 30 days of following this and being committed.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: You will be the mindset will change, the discipline will come, the willpower will come.
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: Put your blinders on, put your head down, concentrate, be committed.
- 13:53SPEAKER_00: And I promise you, you'll start to see the results you've wanted without just the little like, eh, if it happens, it happens.
- 13:59SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: We want to shift out of interest.
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: You know, like, for example, this podcast, right?
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: I started it because I was interested in starting a podcast.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: The fact that I go in and out of posting weekly shows that I'm not committed to my podcast.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: So it's just something I do when it's convenient, when I remember, and when my schedule allows.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: If I was truly committed to this podcast and growing this podcast, it would be in my calendar no matter what.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: I would be advertising it.
- 14:30SPEAKER_00: I would be hiring people to do my podcast.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: But I'm interested in it right now.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: Maybe one day I will shift into being committed.
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: And I do plan on having guests on and making it bigger, but right now it's not my priority.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: So if your goal is actually not your priority right now, that's fine too.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: But just know that if you're signing up for a coaching plan or if you really, really want results to happen, we need to be committed to it.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: We can't just half-ass it and see the results that we want.
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: So that is my short little episode for you guys today.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: I hope that, you know, it was super helpful.
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: Oh my goodness, guys, I'm gonna, you're gonna laugh at me right now, but my Chrome on my I'm gonna have like, I'm gonna start crying on this podcast.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: My Chrome on my Apple on my Mac right now just closed and I opened it back up and all of my tabs are gone.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: I have to figure out how to restore them because there's no button that says restore, like usual.
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: And if I told you how many tabs I have, Mercury.
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: Title of this podcast, How many technological fails can I have in one short podcast episode?
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: Actually, let me not, because this episode's not gonna get posted.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: All right, guys, I will catch you in the next one to two weeks um with our next episode.
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: We're actually gonna start interviewing our team BDN coaches and have them on so that you guys can meet them.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: I'm super excited about that because I want you guys to meet and hear how awesome all the coaches are on Team BDN.
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: And I will check you guys out soon.
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: Have a good weekend.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: Bye.
