- 0:11Hello and welcome back to another episode of the Mindsets
- 0:14podcast. Charles, how we doing?
- 0:16What a way to start the week. That's true.
- 0:19They don't know that. What a way to start the middle
- 0:21of your week. Yeah, you guys.
- 0:22But for us, I always forget that Freshest Monday.
- 0:25Yeah, Episode 78 we did the quarter, the 3/4 of century what
- 0:32feels like yesterday. I know yeah, yeah.
- 0:33And now, with three episodes down, the.
- 0:34Line. I know we're flying through them
- 0:35this. Weekly episode thing is a great
- 0:37way to be productive. It is, yeah, for sure.
- 0:39We're going to kick off this episode same way we kick off
- 0:42every episode. 2 minute news. And because of the amount of
- 0:45sporting events going on, which we did foresee at the beginning
- 0:47of the year, we've got a lot to get through.
- 0:50Shall I start us off Do? You want me to set the time up?
- 0:52Yeah. All right.
- 0:53OK, I can do it really fast, 3 21 I'll be good.
- 0:57Winter Olympics so far, we have managed to retrieve three medals
- 1:01as Team GB, all of them being gold.
- 1:03And so the first medal that we got with is Matt Weston in the
- 1:07men's skeleton. He broke the track record the
- 1:10first run and then he did it again on the second run and
- 1:13secured and then secured himself the gold medal there.
- 1:16And we then also had a reappearance of Matt running
- 1:20with the girl that I've been putting forward, which is gosh,
- 1:24Gabby Stoker. They actually had gold in the
- 1:27mixed combined event did really well.
- 1:29That's another one. And then we also got mixed
- 1:32snowball cross, first snowboard gold medal we've ever had and
- 1:36that was fantastic. That was really good one to
- 1:38watch. We put it back in the last turn.
- 1:40So that is the news from Team GB in the Winter Olympics.
- 1:43The next thing that's come out today is the Canada double
- 1:46touching rule breaking. If you haven't seen it, Canada
- 1:50have been accused of touching the stone with their fingers,
- 1:53which is double touching, which you're allowed to do before it
- 1:54crosses the line. This is in curling, by the way.
- 1:56I hadn't said sorry, but they're actually not allowed to touch
- 2:00the physical part of the stone. You're allowed to touch the
- 2:02handle as much as you want before the line.
- 2:04But they've been touching the stone and they've been swearing
- 2:07matches between teams saying I don't FN do this like and
- 2:11they're like, I'm going to show you a video after me.
- 2:12You've been doing it your whole career.
- 2:14Why would you try and when there's so many cameras that
- 2:16anyway it's too too many disease carry on.
- 2:18So is that all of you you've? Got all of me from the winter.
- 2:21Olympics. So the biggest one for me, I'd
- 2:23like to report on is Keely Hodgkinson.
- 2:25Over the weekend she ran UK Indoor Championships in
- 2:28Birmingham. She smashed her own national
- 2:31record by nearly a second. I think she ran 156 three, which
- 2:36puts her like third all time quickest 800 meters.
- 2:38So at some point she's going to break the world record, which is
- 2:40unbelievable. Then we've had the start of the
- 2:42Six Nations. There's probably like 2 weeks to
- 2:44catch up on now, so big results. Italy beat Scotland in weak wine
- 2:48time, France beat Ireland pretty convincingly.
- 2:52England really beat Wales pretty badly.
- 2:55And then last weekend just gone, Scotland managed to beat England
- 2:59at the Calcutta Cup in Murrayfield, which was awesome
- 3:01for Scotland. Wales suffered again, a pretty
- 3:05sad loss to France and that's basically all I have to catch
- 3:08you up on. I think this year Italy could be
- 3:11a bogey team. They could do some messing
- 3:12around with what's been going on, yeah, but.
- 3:15Italy have been building for a while.
- 3:16Like I no longer look at Italy and go that's a rubbish rugby
- 3:20team I. Think it was a few episodes ago
- 3:21I said that Italy are really good in the Six Nations for just
- 3:23winning the wooden spoon every year.
- 3:24Yeah yeah, yeah, not anymore, not anymore.
- 3:26Wales are yeah yeah in favour. I wish you in a few rest years
- 3:28yeah. OK, so that's kind of the two
- 3:31main news. How?
- 3:32Close were we to go like these six, Yeah.
- 3:34Solid. Well, we're going to continue
- 3:36that theme of not being within the two minutes because there's
- 3:38actually loads of stuff going on at the moment and I want to dive
- 3:41into it a little bit more. I think you guys would
- 3:42appreciate some of this. So one of the first things is
- 3:46we've been mentioning how GB have been doing in the Olympics.
- 3:48Kirsty Muir has been a standout performer for us.
- 3:52She's very young. I think she's like early 20s
- 3:56snowboarder. She's been doing the slopestar,
- 3:57she's been doing the big air and gutting, absolutely gutting.
- 4:02I was mentioning to you before the podcast, but the slopestar's
- 4:05been really interesting because the sun's been having a massive
- 4:07effect on the speed that riders are able to get into the jumps.
- 4:11So in her competition, there was pretty much like a lockout top
- 4:14five. Like you knew you were going to
- 4:15come to top five you used to know where, and she wasn't in
- 4:18that. But a lot of them weren't
- 4:20adjusting their runs to the speed they were going to be able
- 4:22to generate off the jumps, which meant that when she came into
- 4:24her final run, she had a real chance.
- 4:26But like sticking something. So Kirsty landed a great run,
- 4:30arguably unfairly judged to be a little bit lower than she'd
- 4:34liked. She missed out on bronze by half
- 4:37a point, which is gutting. But I mean, for her first
- 4:41Olympics, incredible. And really interestingly, and
- 4:44this is a fun fact for you, Kirsty and the podcast were
- 4:47talking on TikTok about getting her on a couple of years ago
- 4:50because she had a pretty severe injury that she's been fighting
- 4:53back from. So first of all, well done to
- 4:54Kirsty for getting back to the Olympics and having that level
- 4:56of performance with the severity of her knee injury.
- 4:59And hopefully we might be able to get her down to London
- 5:03because she is. Got it.
- 5:05Get her down to London rather than Aberdeen and see if we can
- 5:08get her to explain how she trained for that.
- 5:10Yeah. So that's one thing.
- 5:12The next thing, let's look back at last episode.
- 5:16Big man Scotty James. Oh, yeah, we were.
- 5:19I was really hoping. Rooting for him.
- 5:20We were gonna. We were.
- 5:21Gonna see that gold in his hands.
- 5:23What happened while I was in between these episodes was I
- 5:27noticed that he ran a 98.75 point out of 100 by the way.
- 5:30So like basically perfect. And I was like, Oh my gosh, has
- 5:33he done that in the Olympics? But no, it was the world
- 5:36champion LAX last week where he basically put down this perfect
- 5:39run, which is exactly what you would want a week before your
- 5:42Olympics. And unfortunately, I guess in
- 5:46many ways he got silver, which is still crazy, but he Olympic.
- 5:51Curse. Yeah, he he ran a in his second.
- 5:55Sorry. In his first of the two runs he
- 5:56got 93.5 points. Still ridiculous, but he was
- 6:03bettered unfortunately by Yuto Tatsuka, who got 95.
- 6:09And then third place was Rosai Yamada, 92.
- 6:12And Yamada has always been, he's young, but he's been back and
- 6:15forth with Scotty quite a lot. So those three and also top five
- 6:19there was Scotty in second and then the other four in the top
- 6:23five, all from Japan really. That snowboarding was amazing,
- 6:26incredible and awesome. One of the gutting things for
- 6:29Scotty in that was the he did a much better run on his second
- 6:34run and on the very, very last landing lost his heel edge.
- 6:37And that was the difference between him and and
- 6:41realistically, that's probably his last Winter Olympics, which
- 6:45is gutting. And then the final thing I want
- 6:48to talk about from the Winter Olympics and as a nice move on
- 6:51from final Winter Olympics, Lindsey Vonn.
- 6:54Now, Lindsey Vonn has been causing a lot of drama in terms
- 6:58of discussion points and comment sections about what she did.
- 7:03So as a recap, and I'm sure, you know, this is like how we've
- 7:05discussed it. She was having a ridiculously
- 7:08good world champ season coming into this year.
- 7:10And bear in mind, she's in her 40s, you know, and we're seeing
- 7:13some rare athletes that are legends managing to keep their
- 7:15career going at that point. But she's had many, many
- 7:18injuries throughout her career, and she was finally on form for
- 7:21this Winter Olympics. Everyone's saying it's probably
- 7:23going to be her last because she's 42.
- 7:25Like when you're 46 doing the Winter Olympics, probably not
- 7:28going to be that great. But she came into this and the
- 7:31week before, she absolutely tore her ACL off the boat.
- 7:36It wasn't like a partial tear. It was a rupture.
- 7:38It was gone and her being her, she said.
- 7:43I don't care. I'm going to race and you're
- 7:44going to do it, Yeah. That's mental.
- 7:46Which is. Mental and a lot of people are
- 7:48like, oh, you shouldn't do that. But I understand it's her last
- 7:50Winter Olympics. Then what happened for a lot of
- 7:53people that switched off from her until the Winter Olympics
- 7:55was they switched on and saw her in the I think the second corner
- 7:59or the second turn, second gate of her downhill race.
- 8:03She hit a bump. She went over and broke her leg
- 8:06and it was on the same side as her knee and everyone's comments
- 8:09were well it looks like you do need an ACL to go skiing and she
- 8:13shouldn't have done it. She's a bad example to younger
- 8:16generations. I want to know what your
- 8:18thoughts are on that situation. I.
- 8:20Think just like in terms of her as an athlete, just in general,
- 8:23she's incredible. Like to be at her age, still
- 8:26competing at the highest level. And you say like going into the
- 8:30Winter Olympics at 46, there's probably sports in the winter
- 8:34and Olympics and the Summer Olympics that you can still
- 8:36compete at that age, you know, things that aren't as high
- 8:39impact. So that but downhill skiing, No,
- 8:42no, no, like even even at 42, it's like it is incredible that
- 8:45she's had the resilience and like longevity to then be able
- 8:49to put her in a position where she's had a good World Cup
- 8:51season and she's still going to go and compete at the the Winter
- 8:55Olympics. It's incredible.
- 8:56I think it's like, would the lack of ACL and the instability
- 9:01that that's causes in the knee have some sort of implication
- 9:05towards her not having the stability or the strength in
- 9:08that second corner which may have caused her to therefore not
- 9:11break her leg? Maybe, but it's hindsight isn't
- 9:14it? And also like people don't
- 9:16realize how much of the identity skiing is for her.
- 9:20That is her. She was going to compete I think
- 9:23either way unless she like literally couldn't walk herself
- 9:26to the start gate. So I would never, I would never
- 9:32encourage someone to compete with a torn ACL.
- 9:36But. Like you can't.
- 9:38Stop them if like if I was in that position and it was like my
- 9:41Winter Olympics, of course I'm going to go and try it.
- 9:43She knew that was probably a risk, but even if she had a
- 9:45healthy ACL, there's a risk that you break your leg anyway.
- 9:49So I think people are too quick to judge.
- 9:51And also it's like, why do you care?
- 9:53I'm. Completely.
- 9:55I'm not even remotely on the fence.
- 9:56I'm entirely on her side. Yeah.
- 9:58And not even like, yeah, from the standpoint of the fact that
- 10:01she is 42 competing and then 46, that's tough.
- 10:06If. I was given one shot at the
- 10:07Olympics the end of the week before.
- 10:09I'm doing like, there's no way you're taking the opportunity
- 10:12away from me. The other interesting parts that
- 10:15happened between her injury and the actual event was firstly she
- 10:20recognized from previous injuries with her Acls.
- 10:24Skiing isn't actually an ACL dominant sport, unlike something
- 10:28like basketball, American football.
- 10:29There's a lot of change of direction, like you are changing
- 10:32direction, but it's not like so sudden.
- 10:34There's a lot of load suddenly that you have to deal with
- 10:37through the joint, but it's not like a twisting motion so much.
- 10:40In an ideal world, obviously she then ruptured it.
- 10:44She then continued training and in the Winter Olympics, you
- 10:48don't just rock up on the day. You can actually run the course.
- 10:51You can do some of the testing, test parts of the course out.
- 10:54She was one of the quicker athletes in the lead up to that.
- 10:57She wasn't just like, oh, she's able to get down.
- 11:00No, she was everyone was like, I think she's still going to win.
- 11:03She's still favorite. The other thing is the actual
- 11:05course itself, that second gate, everyone was having trouble.
- 11:10A lot of people were crashing out there.
- 11:11It wasn't like, oh, her ACL was the reason.
- 11:14If you actually see them going around it, I don't know why it
- 11:16was put in because it is like it's so steep.
- 11:20It was so rutted and icy and everyone's just like just
- 11:24slipping down it unable to. And if you hit it wrong and I
- 11:27think she was an inch off, it was her hand clipped the gate
- 11:31and if she was an inch to the left of it, she'd have been
- 11:34fine. It's always, you know, it
- 11:35wasn't. Just.
- 11:35Her knee that put her in the position, it's just maybe her
- 11:38knee didn't give her the stability, but even that like
- 11:40she she could have not broken her leg and got up and gone
- 11:43again. Now there's so many ifs and buts
- 11:44where I absolutely I commend her for doing it.
- 11:48And I think that actually she's more of a, she is a good example
- 11:53to put in place that like competition.
- 11:54If you're going to compete and you want to be the best in the
- 11:56world at something, you've got to.
- 11:58You've got to. Put down like such a dominant
- 12:00female athlete, like she's she has had an incredible career.
- 12:02She's like sad. That's probably the way it ends
- 12:05for her. But no, no one likes to see
- 12:09success story, do they? It's like they love it when
- 12:11someone fails and like, yeah, she's like perverse in itself.
- 12:14But yeah, I think it's it is a real shame.
- 12:17But watching the downhill skiing is like when they have the
- 12:20speedometer in the top right hand corner.
- 12:22You're like, you're a psycho, Yeah.
- 12:24You are absolutely like, yeah, yeah, I've, I've had AGPS on
- 12:29when I was skiing before. I want to see how fast I could
- 12:31go. I hit just over 100 KS, which is
- 12:35really quick Yeah from my skis, which aren't designed, which
- 12:38weren't designed for that. They were flapping and vibrating
- 12:40and I was like 1 bump dump. Yeah yeah, yeah.
- 12:44But like really dumb. They're doing like in in places
- 12:47they're doing like 130 yeah, which is insane yeah And they're
- 12:50doing that and they just shoot off the edge and like they don't
- 12:53even look high off the ground and the thing will come up
- 12:55showing you all the time. It's like they were in the air
- 12:57for four seconds. 4 seconds is such a long time and like.
- 13:00There's no perception, is there, when you're watching TV or how
- 13:03steep the slopes know. I always, I always when you see
- 13:06like big mountain skiing and you're like, come on.
- 13:09Yeah, yeah. And it's like it's actually
- 13:11vertical. Do you always can't see it, I
- 13:13find. Really.
- 13:14Interesting. I don't know if if people listen
- 13:15to this would have been to like the Alps or some mountains in
- 13:18summer. But if you go to a ski resort,
- 13:20you ski that and you go in summer and you see it without
- 13:22snow, you realise how it's like you can't walk.
- 13:24Up it. Yeah, yeah.
- 13:25Yeah, it is. Yeah, it is, Mallard.
- 13:27Yeah. Anyway, we're going to go into
- 13:29Grind My Gears because Lindsay ground a lot of people's gears
- 13:32apparently. So I guess it's a bit of a life
- 13:36update. I managed to go to America for
- 13:37the first time last week, which meant I was exposed to a lot of
- 13:40things that pissed me off just with the Americans alone, but
- 13:43I'll hold back. I'll start off by saying that
- 13:46Americans just say the wildest things randomly.
- 13:49And I thought growing up playing Grand Theft Auto or other games
- 13:51where like, you know, where there's the PC that should
- 13:54playing a character, a non playable character will just say
- 13:56something really randomly in the middle of nowhere to no one is
- 14:00like a random statement that happens.
- 14:02And I can't believe it happened. I was I was filling a drink up
- 14:06in a restaurant and someone behind me with no one else
- 14:09around them also didn't look like they were talking to me,
- 14:11which they just went, you know, that's what I don't get about
- 14:15bank robbers. Just let them have the money.
- 14:18You can print more and then just carries on with their day and
- 14:21I'm like, what the hell is going on in this place?
- 14:23This place is a simulation and they just don't start.
- 14:27They're so friendly. One guy found someone's chewing
- 14:29gum packet on the floor outside the plane.
- 14:32If this happened in the UK, that stays there.
- 14:35That's where that lives now until someone puts it in the
- 14:37bin. This guy picked it up, walked
- 14:39down the entire plane, checking with everybody in their
- 14:41individual seats. Is this your gum packet?
- 14:43Have you lost some gum? Did he work for the airline?
- 14:46No. No.
- 14:47That's weird and. So he delayed everyone leaving
- 14:50on the plane because he wanted to get the chewing gum to
- 14:52whoever it was. If it was me at this point and I
- 14:55was in like the 20th row, I'm saying no.
- 14:57It's. Not mine.
- 14:58I can't. I can't be the person that has
- 15:00caused this. Yeah, Yeah.
- 15:02Yeah. Yeah.
- 15:03No Americans. He's most.
- 15:04That's yeah. I mean, that's mental.
- 15:06Yeah. I mean, you can't really believe
- 15:08it until you see it. Wild.
- 15:10My 1 is more close to home. OK, I don't know whether I
- 15:16respect it or I hate it. I'm kind of like caught between
- 15:19two minds. So I was cycling home.
- 15:22It must have been Tuesday night, Monday night last week.
- 15:27Like bearing in mind I'm I'm finishing closing up the gym,
- 15:30whatever. It's probably like close to
- 15:319:00. The weather we've had in the UK,
- 15:34it was raining and it was dark and it was cold and I was
- 15:37cycling her and I was like, this isn't particularly nice.
- 15:40I'm going over Tower Bridge, my route down South, over over the
- 15:43over the river. Someone's running across the
- 15:46bridge going for their run chest strap on.
- 15:49I can see the fact he's got a chest strap on because he's
- 15:51running topless topless at this. Time of year.
- 15:55So I was like. OK, it's raining.
- 15:58Maybe it's like, maybe it's not that cold.
- 16:01I looked, it was 3°, it was 3°. It was raining.
- 16:04He had his top off with his shirt tucked into his shorts,
- 16:07wearing gloves. That's the main character
- 16:12syndrome, yeah. I was just like, I don't know if
- 16:16I've actually seen that. I had to double take, but yeah,
- 16:18definitely running topless across Tower Bridge.
- 16:20That's not. OK.
- 16:21Yeah, that's. Not OK, isn't it?
- 16:22I'm I'm also like even running topless in summer around
- 16:25Batchette. Snowmark is a little bit like
- 16:26running across tower. Bridge, the tourism that goes on
- 16:29there, like you just wouldn't go there unless you want to be seen
- 16:32well. Exactly.
- 16:33I guess you could. I always avoid it like no matter
- 16:36what time of day it is. But like in the evening it is
- 16:38quieter and it was raining so it was quieter.
- 16:40But why is that on your run route?
- 16:42So London. You're telling me that London
- 16:43has been played each end of London from Battersea to Tower
- 16:47Bridge? There's bozos.
- 16:48Oh yeah, there's a running. There's a load of bozos
- 16:50everywhere. Next one I've got is I I feel
- 16:54like we mentioned this almost a year ago but I have seen more
- 16:57people strength training in carbon plated choose and like
- 17:01the the amount of wobbling is. Epidemic.
- 17:03Crazy. What were they doing?
- 17:06Some standing shoulder press dumbbells and some planks and
- 17:12then some some like dumbbell press on the on the bench.
- 17:15All right. It's not a very good, it's like
- 17:17them. On a dumbbell press that is
- 17:18fine, but. It's not as terrible as they
- 17:20were like going for squatting or Oh yeah it.
- 17:21Was my yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh my God.
- 17:24Clean and jerky. I'm I'm sure I've seen that.
- 17:28Another another wild one. Have you got any any more?
- 17:30I've got one more that I'll mention.
- 17:33I'm. Leaving.
- 17:33I'm leaving my mine as it is. Is it good?
- 17:36Enough for me, I need to mention this one and I I'm going to show
- 17:40you a video which will I will overlay here.
- 17:42So if you're if you're watching this on YouTube, you can enjoy
- 17:45whatever I'm trying to explain here.
- 17:48I'm annoyed that any sport can be a sport now in the like.
- 17:53You can just make something up and it's a sport.
- 17:56I thought it was great when I was seeing, like, the annual
- 17:59world champs of the American football that gets thrown onto a
- 18:03roof with the number of bounces and gets caught and gets
- 18:05televised every year. I think that's a funny joke.
- 18:07I think the beer miles Great. Yeah.
- 18:08OK. What the people on YouTube will
- 18:11be watching right now is wrestling meet basketball and I
- 18:19genuinely do not understand. I haven't bothered to go and
- 18:22look at the rules because I'm I'm going to continue watching
- 18:24reels until I understand what's going on and I can be an expert.
- 18:27But all I'm seeing is a basketball court with the hoot
- 18:30lowered so anyone can dunk. The court itself is foam.
- 18:37Yeah, and like like UFC style Octagon.
- 18:40Flooring, but there's no, there's no like it's not
- 18:42enclosed at all. OK, But like people are playing
- 18:45basketball, they're not bouncing the ball very much.
- 18:47So I think travelling's just like accepted.
- 18:49And then all of a sudden someone takes the T-shirt off and just
- 18:52like throws someone else over their shoulder and it, there's
- 18:55just like no consistency to it. Other times and when everyone's
- 18:59got their T-shirt on, people will like try and engage in a
- 19:00bit of wrestling and then the person would all just shrug them
- 19:02off and go and dunk. And I can't work it out.
- 19:05Seems of how many? I think it's it's normal
- 19:08basketball teams. Yeah, it's it's like it's not
- 19:10normal basketball teams playing, but.
- 19:12Yeah, I was going to say. It's not like Ron James.
- 19:14Yeah, yeah, yeah. I can't even remember what it's
- 19:17called. I've written wrestle.
- 19:18Dunk league, I mean. It sounds cool.
- 19:20Yeah, it is in my head, but it's annoying that like that can just
- 19:24exist to that scan as well when. There's have you seen when
- 19:28people like meet up around like April time and they'll play
- 19:32their own version of the Masters and they'll go like crazy and
- 19:35they'll they'll have a green jacket.
- 19:37It's just like to the whole thing.
- 19:38Also so for that whole backyard. Cricket have you seen that
- 19:41incredible. So yeah, yeah, yeah, the level
- 19:43to that is and the broadcast and the the yeah, these unbelievable
- 19:47if. The ability to like live stream
- 19:49and stuff like that was so easy on phones back when I was a kid.
- 19:52We'd 100% have done it because I remember having a cricket strip
- 19:55in the back of one of my friend's gardens and we rolled
- 19:57every day with a wheelie bin and like, we played on that.
- 20:00So, yeah, yeah. Yeah, it was.
- 20:01Sick. Yeah, yeah.
- 20:03Anyway, have you got any more I? Think that's that's sparked
- 20:06something in me. I just remembered on on ITV now
- 20:09new this year. Obviously you've always had
- 20:12adverts on ITV watching sport before it started.
- 20:15Whatever they've now got in game advertisement where they split
- 20:19screen at like one time per half.
- 20:22I don't know if you saw it, but the rugby, when it's like a A
- 20:24scrum and they're resetting the scrum and it's a bit slower, it
- 20:28like half the screen comes off, they start so.
- 20:31American. It's so.
- 20:32American, isn't it? Yeah, I just like bring back
- 20:34BBCI. Know BBCBC just ads breaks in?
- 20:38Do they sometimes with their own shows?
- 20:40I don't. Oh yeah, fuck yeah.
- 20:41I'm watching the show we're going to watch.
- 20:43I care about that one. Yeah, well, we're going to,
- 20:46we're going to stick on to a similar theme to last episode.
- 20:48And with what's going on in the world at the moment, I think
- 20:51with the success that we're having in the Winter Olympics,
- 20:54we should continue talking about the training because a lot of
- 20:57Winter Olympians, specifically in the UK, don't start that
- 21:01sport young. They discover the sport.
- 21:04And in the example of our our new hero within skeleton, Matt
- 21:10wasn't always in skeleton. He was, he went through like a
- 21:15pathway, like a discovery thing. So then he did some training
- 21:18with the military and all that, but then he got into skeleton.
- 21:20He's been doing it for a very long time.
- 21:22He's won world championship, World World Cups, that kind of
- 21:25thing. But yeah, he's obviously in
- 21:27great form this year, breaking the track record every time.
- 21:29And I forgot to mention when he did the the mixed track and it
- 21:33was his turn after Gabby had gone, he broke the track record,
- 21:37his own track record again. So he just like that track is
- 21:40his home. He owns it.
- 21:42But what we were going to talk through is how you train to be a
- 21:46skeleton athlete and then also versus another sport that we're
- 21:51actually pretty good at, which is curling, which I don't think
- 21:54gets enough credit. And do you know what?
- 21:56You can sit down and watch curling and be like, this is the
- 22:00deadest sport, yeah, 5 minutes later or you can get really into
- 22:04it. Yeah.
- 22:04Yeah. So I thought we talked about it
- 22:06a little bit. Now, in terms of breaking down
- 22:08skeleton for people that don't understand, a lot of people will
- 22:11understand it. As you run, you throw yourself
- 22:12on this tray and then you bump your way down to the end.
- 22:14Yeah. It's actually not far off, man.
- 22:16Yeah, yeah, yeah. But the first thing that's
- 22:17really, really important is that there is a 30 meter Sprint
- 22:20distance where you are just hell for leather, sprinting as fast
- 22:24as you can with one hand on the tray.
- 22:25And then, yeah, you're now running as fast as you can and
- 22:28you have to load yourself from sprinting to horizontally,
- 22:31landing perfectly on this thing which has been shaped your body.
- 22:34Yeah. Then from that point onwards,
- 22:36you're generating speed purely by gravity helping you down, and
- 22:40you're trying not to hit the sides that slow you down, and
- 22:42you're doing it by slight adjustments in your shoulder
- 22:44positioning. Slight adjustments.
- 22:46And you. Yeah, yeah.
- 22:47But what I. Didn't realize was the G forces
- 22:49are so high you're talking about 5 GS It's.
- 22:51Like pulling your face onto the eyes.
- 22:53Right, your face. Is actually on the eyes for most
- 22:55of them. I saw an.
- 22:56Interview with Matt and he was saying that there's you often
- 22:59hear a noise over the microphone and he's like, yeah, that's my
- 23:02face on the ice. Oh, really?
- 23:05That's like a like a scraping sound when they run the
- 23:08microphones on the chords. So I.
- 23:10Don't know. And this would be a really
- 23:12interesting thing to ask is like if their face is in the ice, can
- 23:16they actually like see up very well?
- 23:18Because you see a lot of the athletes in a lot of sports
- 23:22where there's some sort of track or thing that they're following.
- 23:23Would you like pre visualization their eyes?
- 23:26Yeah, they do that. Like just know that this turn is
- 23:29coming. So I I need to turn this much or
- 23:31can they like I'm? Sure, that's like.
- 23:33Gravity use their eyes to like see just a bit their eyes.
- 23:35Are being pulled closed. Yeah.
- 23:37I, I mean, it's, it's fascinating.
- 23:38I'm sure there's like, we'll discuss it a little bit more,
- 23:41but like it's just like. A.
- 23:44Crazy mixture of I think you obviously have to be like
- 23:50physically very strong and powerful and you have to have
- 23:52good speed to get this train moving.
- 23:55But then it's just like how tapped.
- 23:57To you like how? How?
- 23:59But but then again, like you have there's no choice because
- 24:03there's no break. No, that was something else.
- 24:05There's no break. No, because I think it was the
- 24:08same interview. They're like, well, how'd you
- 24:10stop? And that you basically just like
- 24:11cobra position on the. On the tray to.
- 24:14Create more certain in your feet in which is like.
- 24:18And you're obviously not going to do that on a turn, no.
- 24:21So it's like. Once you're going, you're going
- 24:23'cause you're doing. I think the number that I've got
- 24:26is that they're they're doing up to 100 and 140 yeah, kmh when
- 24:31we. Were talking about the skiers
- 24:32doing like 1/21/30 or you going over 100 kilons an hour on sheet
- 24:37ice where you're that close? Yeah, and.
- 24:39Remember, remember how fast everything feels when you are
- 24:40low down as well. So like when you're in a sports
- 24:42guy, you'd be doing the same speed as what you're doing in a
- 24:44form you're. Like hold on on on size.
- 24:46Yeah. So yeah, it's incredible.
- 24:48I from. Understanding their training,
- 24:51their training is actually very different to what we were saying
- 24:54with Scotty because there's a lot of stuff that we discussed
- 24:58with his rotation, like being able to put explosive power out.
- 25:02They do have an explosive power part of their training because
- 25:05they have to train more like sprinters because as we've said,
- 25:08most of the time benefit they get is in that first 30 meters.
- 25:12The 0.05 second difference is huge because that change in
- 25:18speed just across the whole run, if they can keep a theme, just
- 25:22continues to grow the gap, which is one of the reasons that
- 25:25Matt's so good is his off the line speed is incredible.
- 25:29So if we then start looking at like Sprint periodization, which
- 25:33is included in their training and then like strength side of
- 25:35things in the off season particularly, that's what
- 25:37they're going to be doing more of because we're fortunate that
- 25:40we have good travel around the world.
- 25:42And we said this last episode where you can travel to cold
- 25:45areas, but depending on your sliding time, sliding, as it's
- 25:50called crazy expensive. So like spending a day there
- 25:56versus doing loads of training and like just sort of practicing
- 25:58in another way possible for the skills is way more beneficial to
- 26:02your pocket when you're not a very well funded sport,
- 26:05especially in the UK to do more stuff and more work in the gym.
- 26:08So in terms of what a week might look like, again, have put
- 26:12together like a loose plan, but it's still going to be training
- 26:16twice a day. If you're a pro athlete, it's
- 26:18probably pretty normal. First thing, though, is going to
- 26:21be more of your like acceleration work.
- 26:23So some short Sprint stuff kind of going through the mobility.
- 26:26The A skips, the B skips, C skips everything going through
- 26:30the whole alphabet. But like doing your body
- 26:32control, which again, in sprinting, being able to control
- 26:36your lower limbs very precisely when you're doing like a really
- 26:40short burst of acceleration is like super important.
- 26:43The other thing that's interesting is in their
- 26:46training, you're not necessarily sprinting in a normal position
- 26:49because unlike a normal sprinter where you rise, you're obviously
- 26:52having to stay low. So what I found was on a
- 26:56Norwegian website. Here we go.
- 26:57If you're interested in getting in skeleton, they've given you a
- 27:00good strength and mobility program to swallow.
- 27:03So for this to begin with, they've got 3 levels.
- 27:06The first level I'll read these out back extension on a like a
- 27:10this. Is just like bog standards. 3
- 27:13bog standards. So squat forward lunges, jumping
- 27:17lunges, rotational strength are like a pal.
- 27:18Off press, short speed skating, jumps from side to side, side
- 27:22plank, sideline, groin strength like Copenhagen kind of thing.
- 27:25And Nordic hamstring curls I think.
- 27:27Honestly, based off the work we did with was a Scotty and the
- 27:34the I could be a a Winter Olympic sports specific S&C
- 27:38check coach I. Think you should?
- 27:40I think I would love that if you were.
- 27:42Then you go up a level to these next 8 exercises.
- 27:45You got the wiper where you're lying on the floor with your
- 27:47legs going side to side. You got single leg squats.
- 27:51You then got 4 lunges again, more power press Copenhagen
- 27:54adductors, single leg body tilts which.
- 27:58Looks like an aeroplane it looks.
- 27:59Like a single leg RDL? Yeah, in a way long speed
- 28:02skating jump. Not entirely sure if I'm
- 28:04directly honest with you. What the differences between
- 28:06short and long as a as an exercise and then nor do they go
- 28:10out on a. Guess and say 1's further than
- 28:12the other. Maybe that's a fair guess.
- 28:15That's why you would be a great SSE coach.
- 28:17Just jump a bit further the next one.
- 28:20We've got more balance being brought in.
- 28:22So for for Level 3, which is the top level is where they've got
- 28:25like your favorite thing, the Bosu ball flipped upside down.
- 28:28So you've got, see? That's where it's applicable
- 28:31specific, but they don't. Why do they have that pure gym
- 28:34down the road for all of the for Matt, obviously sorry and great.
- 28:38How about you? Yeah, everyone who's now going
- 28:39to get exactly skeleton. Single leg squats, squat
- 28:43challenge. I was very about his ring
- 28:45coordination in. So you've got like tennis balls
- 28:46and you're on the bat, you're on the both who ball balance.
- 28:49Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Single leg squats, Copenhagen's
- 28:52the Diver, which looks crazy. It's like an Rd. elbow with your
- 28:57hands out in front on a single leg and then more hands and
- 28:59girls. And apparently once you've got
- 29:00to a level of being able to do these exercises, you're a good
- 29:03level to start considering actually transferring some of
- 29:06your skills and your speed work into on a trying on a tea tray,
- 29:10which is really cool. Ready.
- 29:12Yeah, I feel. Like we do enough of that.
- 29:14Yeah, maybe we do not really. I'm genuinely very keen to have
- 29:17a go at this guy, yeah. I'm also like, I'm terrified,
- 29:19but I'm, I'm really fascinated like on with the training, but
- 29:23my like, my point of like vision is coming from it.
- 29:28I don't know why, but it became really popular.
- 29:30Maybe 3-4, maybe it was the last winter Olympic cycle.
- 29:35Lots of CrossFit athletes in their offseason started getting
- 29:39into bobsleigh. If it was a similar thing where
- 29:43I think they were all Australians, it was James
- 29:44Newberry and Tier 2 when they were both like fully in on
- 29:48CrossFit before they started doing high rocks.
- 29:51I don't know whether that was like an Australian talent
- 29:53pathway similar to what I'm assuming Matt did, where they
- 29:56were like, these are really powerful athletes and they're
- 29:59really athletic and they've got good strong core.
- 30:01They don't necessarily understand the ways in which the
- 30:05bobsleigh works. They don't have to steer.
- 30:07Yeah, but they're just going to create good force down the track
- 30:11and then jump in. Exactly.
- 30:13So like, their training obviously for, for CrossFit is
- 30:17much more broad in terms of all of the different exercises.
- 30:21And they're doing lots of gymnastics and Olympic weight
- 30:23lifting, but it's like, it's the transfer from Olympic
- 30:26weightlifting. I think Tia and James maybe both
- 30:28have backgrounds in sprinting anyway.
- 30:30So it's just like when you're looking to select someone for
- 30:33skeleton, no one goes to school when they're a kid and goes, oh,
- 30:37I want to do skeleton. They might do now because they
- 30:39hand like your models to the cartoon, but especially when I
- 30:42was at school, it's like kids want to be footballers.
- 30:44They want to be a rugby, they want to do X-Men.
- 30:45No one really thinks of a niche sport.
- 30:47So talent scouts have to go and say, OK, well, who's the really
- 30:51fast explosive kid? Maybe we can like coerce them
- 30:54into doing sled or skeleton or something like that.
- 30:56And it's, I had a conversation similar to this with someone
- 31:00about 10 meter platform diving. How do you get into that?
- 31:04Well, they go to the gymnastics gym and they find kids who are
- 31:07really good at gymnastics. Maybe they're not going to be
- 31:09the best gymnasts, but they want to jump off something really
- 31:12high and go Splash I. I don't know if I've mentioned
- 31:14this to you, a lot of mogul skiers formerly from a
- 31:17gymnastics background because you get heavy point scoring on
- 31:20the the technicalities of the tricks that you do between the
- 31:23moguls and then the rest of it's just a race.
- 31:25Interestingly on that as well, don't know if you've seen this
- 31:27highlight, one of the guys who I think end up getting the silver
- 31:30medal won his heat race in the moguls after he hit one mogul so
- 31:35wrong. He came off the jump, that was
- 31:36straight after sideways, went round, did hit pull district
- 31:41anyway, landed kind of sideways, hit another bump which meant
- 31:45they had caught him, stood him up backwards and he went through
- 31:47the last mogul field backwards in one race.
- 31:49Really unreal, unbelievable, crazy.
- 31:52But yeah, so as you were saying, there's a lot of transferable
- 31:55skills from like fast moving power, Olympic lifting and goes
- 31:59into a sport like this because again, you are generating a like
- 32:02accelerated Sprint. So it's like I would just look
- 32:05at probably the same as like when the affected like 100 meter
- 32:11runners, they're running offsea offseason, when they're starting
- 32:14to get into season, they do all of their stuff indoors, hence
- 32:17why Keely was running indoors earlier this this week and
- 32:20they're doing 60 meters because there's not 100 meter tracking
- 32:23doors. So it's like their training for
- 32:2660 meters sprinting is probably very, very similar to this.
- 32:29You just don't have like the skill acquisition of having to
- 32:32be accurate and jumping onto the train to the right position.
- 32:35And that's just like the sport of repetition a bit like
- 32:37practicing long jump or triple jump or high jump.
- 32:39It's like take off where my feet need to be, where my hands need
- 32:42to be. It's like, it's really
- 32:43fascinating. Well, then the next thing is
- 32:46really interesting is you look at like any sprinters that
- 32:48usually generally pretty well built and that, that there is
- 32:52grounds for that as well in the upper body.
- 32:54However, a lot of the large train, a lot of the training
- 32:57they have is they well, they need to be slight enough that
- 33:00aerodynamic is not having a massive impact, which when
- 33:02they're in those suits and like with how bulky you can get, it's
- 33:05not going to make a huge impact. But the big thing is the
- 33:09protection element of it because you are going to hit the side
- 33:13and if you dislocate your shoulder as you slam into it and
- 33:15then you can't actually steer very well when you're out of the
- 33:17competition. Not great.
- 33:18But the main thing is also just general mass because the
- 33:22momentum that you want to conserve.
- 33:24So as much as it's the the general understanding from the
- 33:27research that I have is there is a positive linear trend in upper
- 33:32body training as well as lower body training and strength.
- 33:35As long as the accelerative speed doesn't change as soon as
- 33:41you cross the line, you need to start losing weight again.
- 33:43Yeah. Because you basically just need
- 33:45all that you should care about is acceleration.
- 33:47And if you build more body, upper body mass, and you've got
- 33:49to hold it, yeah, then your momentum into the.
- 33:52Into the run become means that you end up going quicker and you
- 33:54lose less speed if you do make impact in turn.
- 33:56I mean, it makes a lot of sense. I think there's I don't know
- 33:59where he's based, if he is based in the UK, because I think it's
- 34:02Bath University that have a big winter sports centre and they do
- 34:06a lot of the indoor training there.
- 34:08And they'll have like a, it looks like a bobsleigh, but it's
- 34:11just like a a metal cage with the hair outside and it's like
- 34:14you can load it full of weight and they'll just like run up and
- 34:17down. I'm sure there's probably
- 34:18something similar. I know this is going to mean
- 34:20from Surrey, but that absolutely mean nothing in terms of where
- 34:23you could put it. Maybe my my knowledge on that is
- 34:25like outdated and there's probably more places around the
- 34:27UK where you can train but. I would actually still be
- 34:30surprised to be on this. Bath is they have some amazing
- 34:32facilities there for winter sport.
- 34:34Well, there you go. If you've been inspired to do
- 34:36Skeleton Off this year, go to Bath University.
- 34:37If you haven't gone, do. You know what, I hope it does
- 34:40because like we, we don't necessarily have the best
- 34:42pedigree in, in GB for winter sports, but off the back of
- 34:46this, we've got 3 gold medals. Yeah.
- 34:48And like, they're in niche sports, but whatever.
- 34:50Like hopefully it sparks more people to get into it.
- 34:54And like, what should the snowboarder remind me?
- 34:57Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like she's, what, 20 years old?
- 35:00So it's like she's got a great career ahead of her.
- 35:02She hopefully inspires lots of other.
- 35:04Girls to get into snowboarding or something similar in term if
- 35:07we round off that, that sort of training programming, what it
- 35:10might look like and you know, we've mentioned the importance
- 35:12of up body, but also plyometrics with anything where you're doing
- 35:14running is always useful. So that's what Tuesday would
- 35:16look like. Not necessarily a double session
- 35:18unless you split the plyometrics and the upper body out.
- 35:21Wednesday again, a bit more sprinting work, a bit more sort
- 35:26of deliberate movement strength work around sprinting to kind of
- 35:29build the strength and the muscles that are needed.
- 35:31Specifically again Wednesday as you're getting close to the
- 35:35season, you'd probably try and do 2 sliding sessions a week I'm
- 35:39told. And so you might do one of them
- 35:41midweek and then one of them towards the weekend.
- 35:43Again, a lot of these athletes do have full time jobs as well,
- 35:46yeah, because they're in E sports.
- 35:47So they have to try and prioritize that on a raise the
- 35:50amount of money. And so you might have a rest day
- 35:53after one of those days on where you've been on the track because
- 35:55you might have had a few bumps. It might have been a pretty
- 35:58intensive day. You might have also had a lot of
- 36:00travel because then there there aren't just a few in London make
- 36:04you all over. So you've probably flown are.
- 36:06There dry slopes. Is that a thing?
- 36:09There are. Drives basically like a slide,
- 36:11yeah. But then you you're not getting
- 36:13the same technical challenges because.
- 36:16Yeah, because you can't. Yeah, you won't.
- 36:19You way I get suddenly hit it. So, yeah, finding places.
- 36:22And that's why offseason training might look very
- 36:23different. Yeah.
- 36:24And then again, we're going into still a large dependence on leg
- 36:28training through like into a weekend with explosivity.
- 36:32Kind of it's not plyometrics if you're adding loads of weight
- 36:35necessarily, but then kind of looking at those movements as
- 36:37like a trap or deadlift with a jump and then catching yourself,
- 36:41that kind of thing. Again, topping up with force
- 36:44absorption. The main thing, as we've said
- 36:46through this whole thing is like how fast can you get in 30
- 36:49meters? And how accurately can you then
- 36:52jump on the board and on the skeleton, sorry, on the on the
- 36:55tray. And then how accurately can you
- 36:58steal yourself down with minimal body movements.
- 37:00And that element of it is more experienced than anything and
- 37:03feel, yeah. I've I've got so many questions
- 37:06I've I'd love to know how much the tray costs.
- 37:10Oh that's a great question cause I know the diameter the the
- 37:12sizing of it. Tell me the.
- 37:13Diameter so in for something so small, I reckon it's
- 37:16embarrassingly exclusive. The sled.
- 37:18Weight 43 kilos for men wow it's actually quite heavy yeah yeah,
- 37:22which is good it means it doesn't slip around to your
- 37:24rails 35 kilograms for women and then they also.
- 37:28It's set weight. Yeah, yeah.
- 37:29And then 30, sorry, 80 to 120 centimetres in the length, but
- 37:33that's also massively dependent on the body.
- 37:35So there are things that you'll see, the handles, the handles
- 37:38aren't straight lines. They might have been one day,
- 37:41but they're now like shaped to the body.
- 37:43So like you sit in it, which kind of cradles you a bit more.
- 37:46But yeah, the, the a lot of the trays are also largely made out
- 37:48of carbon Piber where they can be.
- 37:50And then a lot of the weight goes at the bottom in the actual
- 37:52run. We should do some.
- 37:52Research for the next pod to see how expensive it is.
- 37:55OK, I'm also like. I wonder what the similarity
- 37:58would be a game. Guess the price of something
- 38:00that is like, yeah, yeah. That's a good idea.
- 38:02The also then the similarities between neck training that F1
- 38:06drivers do and neck training that skeleton.
- 38:09Yeah, yeah, riders do, yeah, that skeletons riders, skeleton
- 38:12riders, because I'm sure there's lots of similarities there as
- 38:15well. You'd imagine, anyway.
- 38:17But then we're going to go into this opposing sport, let's go,
- 38:20which GB has also been really good at.
- 38:21Unfortunately we've actually not had any medals so far this
- 38:24tournament, but we are. There's still so much curling to
- 38:26go. So curling, there's quite a a
- 38:30bit more of the skill element to this, but again, I've been
- 38:32watching in the lead up to this BBC have got gone and got some
- 38:35average people and got them to do it.
- 38:37And it, it, there's things that you don't even think about this
- 38:40slide when they're going to push it and then push themselves off.
- 38:44The balance that's required for that is insane.
- 38:46Yeah. Because how long the eyes?
- 38:48Yeah, you're on normal shoes. They've got a metal bit on them
- 38:50or like a slidy bit. And then you're actually leaning
- 38:53on that brush to balance yourself and then deliver it
- 38:56perfectly with the spin and everything.
- 38:58Oh no, it's like. It's one of those ones where.
- 39:00If you are very good at it, you make it look so easy.
- 39:03And I think, I think the distance from the release point
- 39:06to the centre of the target they're aiming at is some, it's
- 39:08something like it's either 40 yards or 40 meters, but either
- 39:11way, long. That is long, yeah.
- 39:13Yeah. And you don't see that until
- 39:14they are. Yeah, yeah.
- 39:14Because the camera is just like above the target and then
- 39:17watching them release. Yeah, so there, there's actually
- 39:19a lot more to this. The next thing in terms of we've
- 39:22said balance, we've said power that you're going to need for
- 39:25like releasing the stone, which doesn't look crazy, means a lot
- 39:28of the power comes from the push off in the 1st place.
- 39:31Power for the brush usage. Oh yeah.
- 39:34Have you seen the video of the brush?
- 39:35The snap? I was going to say this and how
- 39:37hard his hand hit. I don't know if he hit the stone
- 39:40or the ice, but I was like, he was in some serious pain.
- 39:43Yeah, they put. Some they put serious, serious
- 39:45load through that. And again, if you think about
- 39:47how I don't know if you've like brushed the the floor before, if
- 39:50you're if you're just brushing it, you know, around the gym and
- 39:53you just your heart rate actually does get up.
- 39:55But if you're trying to do it as much as you can, you're like
- 39:57pushing as hard as you can with your whole body weight and if
- 39:59you actually watch them. There's not a lot of their feet
- 40:02are on the floor. They're doing a really good job
- 40:04of like just being on their tip toes sliding along and all their
- 40:06way through it. Like they they do get heart rate
- 40:08spikes and they do need to do aerobicry.
- 40:10Accuracy around not hitting the stone and whatever.
- 40:12That'd be another one to guess because I'd like to know how
- 40:14expensive a brush is. I'd like to know how expensive a
- 40:17stone is because the stone it has got a metal handle and the
- 40:21light is green. If they let go of it before the
- 40:23the line. Oh, it's got a sense.
- 40:25Yeah, yeah, yeah. Wow.
- 40:26Yeah, there's lots we we need to learn.
- 40:28It is fascinating. But yeah, so.
- 40:31In yeah, their training is a lot more about accuracy and skill
- 40:36set and balance and that sort of thing.
- 40:37But there is still the requirement to do the S&C side
- 40:41of it for the power to push off and to be able to be
- 40:45consistently accurate and having good motor control.
- 40:48This. Is going to be really ignorant.
- 40:49There's always one stone pusher. That's their job, no?
- 40:54They. All have to do it.
- 40:55They all. Take it in turns.
- 40:56OK, so. That that then changes because
- 40:58it's like so you've. Got different formats in in
- 41:00curling, you don't have a solos. OK, So you're always out here.
- 41:04Yeah. So you've got men's double S,
- 41:06women's double S you've got mixed double S You've then got
- 41:08the team event where you can have mixed team.
- 41:11So 2 girls, 2 boys and then the same you have for for men, for
- 41:16women. Yeah, yeah.
- 41:18But in they've covered all bases.
- 41:20Yeah, in in the, in the way that it's done you you, you take it
- 41:24in turns on ends to throw stones.
- 41:27I don't think, however, based on what I've watched, unless I'm
- 41:30wrong, that you necessarily have to take it in turns 1 by 1.
- 41:34I I'm pretty sure I've seen the guy throw 2 stones and the guy
- 41:38throw 2 stones. And you do tend to have a better
- 41:41stone thrower, obviously in a, in a mixed double S, generally
- 41:45from strength perspective, the men have a better output on the
- 41:47brush. So you do end up taking that on.
- 41:49So a lot of the time what you have, and This is why it might
- 41:52seem somewhat confusing, is that sometimes the the women will be
- 41:55down lining the guy up as he's aiming and like give him an aim
- 41:59point to start off with and then he'll throw it and then he'll
- 42:03get up and start brushing himself because he's going to do
- 42:05a better job of that. And it's her job to just guide
- 42:07it in and then maybe help at the end.
- 42:10And and then whereas when a woman throws in a mixed double
- 42:13team, quite often the man immediately starts doing the
- 42:15brushing and then she again just helps out if she needs to at the
- 42:17end. That's not like 100% true.
- 42:20Like if if the guy's been brushing, brushing 3 stones in a
- 42:23row, then he might need a rest. Yeah, Yeah.
- 42:26But it also depends on the shot. Like sometimes there is no
- 42:28intention to do a nice curl. It's just like, and it's just
- 42:31like smashed this one out of the way.
- 42:33But yeah, it gets it gets hugely technical.
- 42:35And when you think about. So it's an end is like 1 mini
- 42:39game you need to you need to win the majority of NS across 10
- 42:44need to yeah, across a game of 10 NS.
- 42:47But in their training to play practice games, they're not
- 42:51often doing 10 NS because that's a long time each N takes about
- 42:5415 minutes. So just in sheer training
- 42:58volume, it's actually quite a lot of time spent out there.
- 42:59Again, we said the same thing about skeleton, but time on the
- 43:02ice is expensive yeah, but so they are sometimes doing double
- 43:06days in terms of the skill of trying to hit a shot over and
- 43:08over again. But they might do a six end game
- 43:11in a scenario where they're like 5 down.
- 43:14So how do they have to take that?
- 43:15Because there's there's rules with incoming as well.
- 43:17You might see that most games, especially in the mix format.
- 43:20And this is something I learnt this this year was there's
- 43:24always a stone or 2 stones put out before the game starts and
- 43:28that's depending on who's got the hammer, which is the last
- 43:30throw. You can put your stone somewhere
- 43:34as like a shield. So quite often it's always in
- 43:36the same place. It's like slightly ahead of the
- 43:38target so you have to curl round it.
- 43:40Sometimes people just put one dead in the middle and they've
- 43:42got their own tactic for that, and then they do all that
- 43:44scenario stuff. But they might be playing only
- 43:4730 ends a week, which doesn't seem like a lot.
- 43:49But then when you convert that into multiplied by four, that's
- 43:53120 minutes. Is that right?
- 43:57That is multiplied by 4, But I don't think that's what I was
- 43:59trying to do. It should be 30 times.
- 44:02Oh yeah, it's 100 and wow, struggling with this one.
- 44:05I think that's 12 hours of curling if you do.
- 44:07Five hours is hard, yeah. Yeah, you do 30 NS, I think
- 44:10that's 12 hours of curling, like actually playing the game.
- 44:12So then there's all the other elements.
- 44:14Like we said, you do need to do strength condition.
- 44:16You don't necessarily need to do any like Ugg threshold stuff,
- 44:19but you do need to be active out there, probably still running
- 44:22that kind of thing, keeping the body in a position where like it
- 44:24can deal with sudden increase in heart rate I think.
- 44:27Also like it's. It doesn't seem particularly
- 44:31like challenging in terms of like physical, but it's also a
- 44:36lot of concentration. So the fits you are, the easier
- 44:38it is for you to be able to concentrate over long periods of
- 44:41time when you are actually active and moving around.
- 44:43So I think that plays a part. I'm sure like flexibility, like
- 44:47some of the positions you get in when you're lunging and like
- 44:49you're bending over with the stick when you're brushing the
- 44:51ice as well. It's like, I'm sure like essence
- 44:54is a very small part of what they're doing because it is like
- 44:58it's just skill and repetition based one of the.
- 45:01Things with their sport as well is that they get to, they'll do
- 45:04training in these tournaments. So just because they're
- 45:07competing doesn't mean they won't train during this because
- 45:09they'll be working on weaknesses or shots they got wrong.
- 45:12But that often means and they were doing an interview, they
- 45:15got up, they were on the ice practicing at 6:00 AM.
- 45:18They then played their first game at 9:00 AM.
- 45:20They got off the ice at 12 midday.
- 45:23They then had their second game starting at 4:00 PM.
- 45:25And then they had practice again at 10:00 PM that night and they
- 45:28were back on at six the next morning.
- 45:29It's actually quite intense for a sport of seemingly low in a
- 45:32lot of. Volume.
- 45:33Yeah, that's a long day and. So they're spending a lot of
- 45:36time, they're absolutely shattered when it comes to
- 45:37tournament. And that's the other thing is
- 45:39like their endurance of being able to continuously do that
- 45:42output because the reason that they're also playing so much
- 45:45isn't, I mean, we've said there's multiple formats.
- 45:47She might have a mixed double s in the morning, you might have a
- 45:49mixed double s in the afternoon. But then they actually overlap
- 45:51with the women's team. And then all of a sudden, yeah,
- 45:53you're doing that as well. I'd I'd love to know like again,
- 45:56like the pathway how you've got into curling, especially in a
- 45:59country that's that I mean, there's so it's.
- 46:01Actually, quite. It is quite big in Scotland.
- 46:03I've heard that, yeah. Yeah.
- 46:04And I do think that it's a thing.
- 46:05It's a bit like lawn bowls. Like I actually know a few young
- 46:07people that have played lawn bowls when they were younger.
- 46:09And I wonder if it's just that sort of like you have a family
- 46:11member that does it or maybe again, off the back of the
- 46:13Olympics because I can't remember you.
- 46:15Watch this and you go, well, I want to try it, Yeah.
- 46:17I think there was an Olympics early on in the 2000s where team
- 46:21we won a gold medal and it was one of the best.
- 46:23I remember watching. In the last couple of years
- 46:25we've been quite good at it, yeah.
- 46:27And people are like GB have got really into it, don't get me
- 46:29wrong. If there was a place where I
- 46:30could do it locally, I would definitely go down and do it.
- 46:32You'd. Definitely go and try.
- 46:33But then is there like an equivalent that you can do
- 46:36without the ice that's bowlings, Yeah, I guess.
- 46:39But you're not, you're not sliding.
- 46:40Around wee bowling, Yeah. Yeah, exactly.
- 46:42Wee curling, yeah. Yeah, I'm sure.
- 46:44That exists. It does.
- 46:45Exist. I've got it over there.
- 46:48Sorted. Yeah, no, just very different
- 46:50sports, very different ways of training, both relatively
- 46:53intense. Oh yeah, In actual fact, from
- 46:55what I said of the curling training versus skeleton, I'd
- 46:57rather do the skeleton training. Yeah, I don't want to behave,
- 47:00no. I'd rather do he skips stuff in
- 47:02the morning and do a bit of squatting, spend that down a
- 47:07slide. Anyway, that that kind of brings
- 47:09us to the end of the topic. If you guys find that
- 47:10interesting, we'd love to continue doing that with the
- 47:13sports this year, however, we're going to take a break from the
- 47:16podcast a little bit. We've got to do something for
- 47:18the first time. I know.
- 47:19Awesome. So we're going to do a quick
- 47:21sponsor break this week. We're talking to those of you
- 47:25that have probably come along because you're into hybrid
- 47:26racing. If you're listening to this
- 47:27podcast, I'm assuming that you have some level of interest in
- 47:30High Rocks or other similar sports like that.
- 47:33We this time have been given a package and we're being
- 47:37sponsored by High Socks and Podium Chaser.
- 47:40So we've actually got some items that they've sent us, so I'm
- 47:45here holding some of their grip socks.
- 47:48We've got them in all different colours.
- 47:49I've actually given a go to some of the bright pink ones.
- 47:52Very good, good choice, but they have grip on the bottom.
- 47:56For those of you who are watching, you'll be able to see
- 47:57this. Essentially what that means is
- 48:00you're going to have slightly more grip in your shoes.
- 48:02A lot of people will use lace lock when they're doing their
- 48:04races. A lot of people complain about
- 48:06their their feet coming out of their shoes when they're doing
- 48:09sled Bush. I think if you can't do lace
- 48:11lock, if you like running in A5 threes, you can't do lace lock
- 48:14on those. So your shoes might come out,
- 48:16your feet might come out of your shoes.
- 48:18Using something with a bit of extra grip on the bottom can
- 48:20prevent that from happening. But also when you're going
- 48:22around some of the turns, because some of these higher
- 48:24courses have crazy sharp turns, helps with that foot movement,
- 48:27gives you a little bit more support.
- 48:28And then we're also being given cool things like the podium
- 48:31chaser hat. If you are chasing podiums this
- 48:33season, do it in style. And so if you are looking to add
- 48:37some of those items to your bag or your checkout, then make sure
- 48:41you put Mindset 15 caps into the checkout.
- 48:44That helps us out, that helps you guys out with 15% off.
- 48:47And then you can tag us when you guys get your orders.
- 48:49We'd love to share them, show us what they look like in the race
- 48:52and give us your feedback. We'll be testing a few of the
- 48:54products out ourselves and giving you more feedback on
- 48:57those. So yeah, please go ahead and do
- 49:00so. Now back to the podcast.
- 49:03We're into the game section. I'm excited.
- 49:05It's my turn. I've been really enjoying
- 49:07putting together the guest. The they've been good.
- 49:10So we've done Guess the Athlete twice.
- 49:13We're not doing that this time. Oh no, this time we're doing
- 49:17Guess the Sport. Cool.
- 49:19So I'm going to give you clues on sports one at a time, and
- 49:22you're going to tell me what you think the sport is.
- 49:24OK, for those of you listening, play along at home wherever you
- 49:27are listening. See if you can get the sport
- 49:30before Charles gets it. As soon as you get it, shout it
- 49:32out. OK.
- 49:33This time you're not going against Roscoe.
- 49:34I know, but the pressure gets not good for me.
- 49:37Yeah, you lose. OK, cool.
- 49:38Perfect. So.
- 49:39Don't guess unless you're confident.
- 49:40OK, OK, size, Go round one. The longest ever match. 11
- 49:47hours, 5 minutes, tennis. Do you not want any of the
- 49:52other? Clues.
- 49:53Are you sure? Yeah, OK.
- 49:54That's spot on correct. As I say, most players at a time
- 49:58is 4 uses a ball. The current all time leader is
- 50:02no, no bad job. Yeah, yeah, I I didn't need it.
- 50:05I wasn't going to. Give you his name.
- 50:06I was going to say the current. Leader for all time winning
- 50:08prize money is $160 million. Oh, you should have said of the.
- 50:12Most ultimate athlete ever, right?
- 50:14So next one, that was very good, OK.
- 50:16The highest ever number of goals scored, 21, has 12 players on a
- 50:23surface at a time. Game is not played with a ball.
- 50:30Great Britain has won Olympic gold in this sport.
- 50:35Canada has won Olympic gold 9. Times and that's your final
- 50:40clue. 6 on 6 and you're. Scoring and it's not played with
- 50:46a ball. It's not played with a ball.
- 50:51Oh, No 6 on, 6/6 on. 6 Not played with the ball.
- 50:54England's won. An Olympic gold in this sport
- 50:57Once Canada's won Olympic gold 9 times.
- 51:03And it's on a field, a surface. Is what I said.
- 51:06It's on a. Surface.
- 51:07Yeah, and it's not. Played with a ball, it's not
- 51:10played with a ball. It must be played with
- 51:11something. It's round.
- 51:13It's not a ball. Is that like a there's a
- 51:16there's? A terminology for.
- 51:17Them it's it's actually a ball, but it's not called the ball.
- 51:19It's not a ball. But it's round.
- 51:24Yeah, I can hear the people. At home screaming and screaming
- 51:27at you and Calendar are good at it.
- 51:28Canada are really good at it. Is there a net there isn't it?
- 51:32It's volleyball. It's not volleyball.
- 51:35I was. I was banking on volleyball
- 51:37being named something different. Unfortunately, it is.
- 51:39Ice hockey? No, I was going to, I was going
- 51:43to say. Ice hockey.
- 51:43But I was like, surely we haven't won an Olympic gold in
- 51:46there 1936 that no get out. That's a great bat.
- 51:49That's. Huge.
- 51:50That's a good. That's a great I.
- 51:51Even had hockey in my head is what's so.
- 51:53Annoying. OK, next 1 then.
- 51:56Clue number one, we've got Olympic matches consist of three
- 52:00minute periods. OK, competitors wear conductive
- 52:06clothing. There are three.
- 52:09Distinct disciplines within this.
- 52:11Sport A target area changes depending on the discipline
- 52:19points are scored. By making.
- 52:21Contact with the tip or edge. It's an Olympic sport.
- 52:31It's an Olympic sport and you wear conductive clothing.
- 52:34You do wear conductive clothing. Summer Olympics could be.
- 52:42That's. Tough for me.
- 52:46The tip or edge. I would also.
- 52:49Say that this is. One of the oldest.
- 52:51Sports in history. So this pre dates the UMB games.
- 53:00Conduct so it's I reckon. It's something like.
- 53:02Wrestling. But why would you wear conductor
- 53:05clothing? So it's touch contact.
- 53:07It's like judo or score points for the tip or edge.
- 53:11It's a big. Oh sword.
- 53:12Oh, fencing spawn. Yeah, yeah, yeah, very good.
- 53:16You're better than that. OK, the last one.
- 53:21There is evidence. That this sport is 20. 5000
- 53:24years old as a sport clue #2. A fan.
- 53:29Is called a toxophilite. OK, a fan of the.
- 53:34Sport not like a. Physical fan A perfect score
- 53:38score A perfect score in qualification of the Olympic
- 53:41Games is 1440 points. Wind is.
- 53:47Arguably the largest challenge in the outdoor variant of this
- 53:50sport, outdoor variants it. Is an Olympic sport.
- 53:55And events are contested. At distances ranging from 30 to
- 53:5890 meters. Old it is, old is old are.
- 54:09They all the clues I'm getting. They are all the clues, I think.
- 54:11It's something like. I can give.
- 54:13You a clue that isn't necessarily.
- 54:15Strictly factual because I'm remembering a fact.
- 54:18OK that isn't I want to take it. I believe the world record for
- 54:22the 30m distance is 5 seconds. That's not helped even a little
- 54:31bit for me. If I tell you that it's.
- 54:34Not just an Olympic sport, but. It debuted as an Olympic sport
- 54:37in the Paras Olympics. OK, but it's very.
- 54:41Old did it. Do you?
- 54:43It might have been. The one before, do we have an?
- 54:44Olympics in 2020? No, London.
- 54:47No, that's no fault. You're old.
- 54:50Yeah, yeah, yeah. So it's funny it debuted in a.
- 54:52Recent Olympics, basically. I'm struggling 30.
- 54:56To 90 meters. Yeah.
- 54:59Is it really stupid I should get it?
- 55:01I don't think so. I think when you've got the
- 55:03broad variety. Of every sport that exists, it's
- 55:05quite hard to narrow down. It's it's, it's not obvious.
- 55:08It's obvious when you know what's the fan called.
- 55:10Again, top a toxophilite, which I'm going to tell you right now.
- 55:14Does not help. Oh.
- 55:16Perfect. Then I I don't know, climbing.
- 55:20Speed climbing 30 meters. In five seconds.
- 55:23Pretty crazy. That is mental.
- 55:25Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 55:26I don't think I can crawl flat. You definitely know what I
- 55:29can't. That is mental.
- 55:31Yeah. Is you running up a vertical
- 55:32slope? Top like topography talks offer
- 55:36like Oh yeah. When I read it.
- 55:39Feels like that has to be a clue because it's, you know, I think
- 55:41it was the, IT was the Olympics before Paris.
- 55:43It was Yeah, yeah, yeah. The climate.
- 55:45Is fun to watch actually. Actually got that.
- 55:47Really good that was. Is that the last one?
- 55:48That was the last one. That was not a good.
- 55:50Round it wasn't it wasn't the best but like I was just trying
- 55:52new format I. Think I'll stick to athletes for
- 55:53you. Maybe I'll bring new team.
- 55:55I was going to do guess the team.
- 55:56I was going to do guess the team.
- 55:58But maybe we'll do that next time.
- 56:00Yeah. Yeah.
- 56:01What was the other? What?
- 56:01Was the other game that we said. We should do.
- 56:03Oh, guess the price. Guess the price.
- 56:04I love that. Yeah, that'll be good.
- 56:06What? What?
- 56:06What's the game show called that does?
- 56:08That there's a whole thing. This is guess the price.
- 56:13There's like a big wheel and it's an American show and family
- 56:18fortunes. No, no.
- 56:20Family Feud No. Seal or no deal?
- 56:22No, it's like the price is right.
- 56:25Oh yeah, we'll do the price is right.
- 56:26OK If you want to see the price is right, we will do that as a
- 56:29game in one of the upcoming episodes.
- 56:31Other than that though, I think that wraps up this episode.
