- 0:05Welcome to The Hypnotist, the show that gives you inside
- 0:09access to cutting edge hypnosis with real clients facing
- 0:12genuine. Issues.
- 0:13Brought to you by The Hypnotherapist, demanded by
- 0:16celebrities, CEOs and even royalty, Adam Cox.
- 0:20These recordings took place live from Adam's clinic in London's
- 0:24world famous Harley Street. So get yourself comfortable and
- 0:31enjoy today's episode of The Hypnotist.
- 0:39Have you found yourself getting into the habit of drinking most
- 0:43days, weekdays, perhaps after work?
- 0:46It's Adam here, and this hypnosis session is designed to
- 0:49help you break that habit of habitual drinking.
- 0:54And habitual drinking is very, very different from intentional
- 0:57drinking. It's not a problem to drink
- 1:00alcohol on special occasions or if you're deciding that that's
- 1:03what you want to do. But a lot of people are
- 1:05mindlessly drinking. And I think COVID had a big
- 1:08impact on that. The pandemic kind of taught
- 1:11everyone to get a load of alcohol and keep it in their
- 1:14homes and then have it whenever they wanted it.
- 1:17And quite often before that, a lot of people had boundaries.
- 1:21They wouldn't have so much alcohol in their home and they
- 1:23would go to a bar or a restaurant when they drunk
- 1:26rather than having it there almost on demand.
- 1:31And this client was like that. They had a habit of not drinking
- 1:34during the weekday before the pandemic, but then after that,
- 1:37they fell into that trap of habitually drinking,
- 1:40particularly when preparing meals in the evenings.
- 1:44What this does is it taps into the ethos of destroying the
- 1:48narrative that alcohol helps them to relax because the memory
- 1:53that this client had of them feeling most relaxed was lying
- 1:56on a sun lounger on a holiday with no drink insight.
- 1:59And that's irrefutable evidence that they can relax without
- 2:03needing alcohol. Their past of not drinking on a
- 2:06weekday was irrefutable evidence that they don't need to drink on
- 2:11a weekday to de stress and unwind from work.
- 2:15And then it has a lot of disassociated future pacing,
- 2:19seeing different futures, different habits, different
- 2:22standards, and seeing what would be the consequence of that.
- 2:26This utilizes something called the Pareto Principle, also known
- 2:30as the 8020 rule, and that is that this client didn't want to
- 2:34eliminate all drinking, they just wanted to keep most of the
- 2:38drinking that would actually give them genuine joy and
- 2:42genuine connection. And this tended to be social
- 2:44drinking. So drinking on a weekend, maybe
- 2:47a Friday or Saturday evening with other people outside of
- 2:50their home would ensure they get the majority of the fun and joy
- 2:55from drinking, but without all of the downsides.
- 2:58It wouldn't affect their next day at work because if they go
- 3:01out on a Friday or a Saturday, they're not then working the day
- 3:04after. So this is really about having
- 3:08your cake and eating it. It's about keeping alcohol in
- 3:11your life if you choose to do that, but without having that
- 3:14element of the downsides. And this particular client felt
- 3:18through their own experience that if they had a bottle of
- 3:21wine on a weekday, they would feel a bit dull.
- 3:24They would lose a bit of their sharpness and their focus the
- 3:27following day. So I introduced an analogy of a
- 3:31sore chopping down tree that gets more and more blunt with
- 3:34every glass of wine so that they intuitively get a sense that
- 3:38this is what's happening to them at work, that as they drink the
- 3:41wine, it is blunting their effective capacity and
- 3:47capabilities in the workplace. That's really important because
- 3:51for them, that was an important thing that they wanted to get
- 3:54good at and feel better AT. And in the past, when they
- 3:57weren't drinking on the weekdays, they did feel that
- 4:00they had that ability to be more sharp and more focused.
- 4:04There's a lot going on here, but at its core, it is simply
- 4:08increasing A boundary as to when it's OK to drink and when it
- 4:12isn't. Not by saying that they can't
- 4:15drink, but by saying that surely they don't want to unless it
- 4:19meets certain criteria. And that criteria is it's on a
- 4:22weekend and it's social or it's a special occasion.
- 4:24And if it does that, then fine, why not?
- 4:27But if it doesn't, then it isn't worth it.
- 4:30And that element of it's not worth it.
- 4:33Everyone has a price. There will be certain things
- 4:35that you buy at a certain price, but if the person selling them
- 4:39to you quadrupled the price, you would stop buying it.
- 4:42And the way to think about alcohol is not to think of it in
- 4:46terms of financial cost, but in terms of other costs.
- 4:50If it makes you less focused, if it messes up your sleep, if it
- 4:53causes arguments in your relationship, if it's giving you
- 4:56excess body fat, that's the real cost of alcohol, not how much
- 5:00you pay for that particular drink.
- 5:02So there's a bit going on here. Obviously it was created for an
- 5:05individual and therefore some of the suggestions are incredibly
- 5:10tailored to the client that I was working with.
- 5:13Ignore any suggestions that aren't right for you, hone into
- 5:15the ones that are. And if you like the idea of a
- 5:18bespoke session and you want to work with me directly, there
- 5:21will be a link in the show notes, the description where you
- 5:24can book a completely free consultation call to explore
- 5:27working with me. I'll explain my process, the
- 5:29costs, everything else and who knows, we may end up working
- 5:32together. For now though, find a quiet,
- 5:35comfortable place where you won't be disturbed.
- 5:38Relax and enjoy the session. Take a deep breath in, and as
- 6:05you breathe in, breathe in that slow, long, relaxing breath.
- 6:11And as you exhale, release all the tension in your eyelids with
- 6:18your eyes closed. Focus just on the sound of my
- 6:24voice, breathing in relaxation, exhaling tension, each breath
- 6:35taking you deeper and deeper. Relaxed.
- 6:44The deeper you breathe, the more relaxed you feel, and the more
- 6:48relaxed you feel, the deeper you breathe.
- 6:52And as your body relaxes, your imagination awakens.
- 7:01And I wonder if you could imagine an island there in the
- 7:07Caribbean, and somewhere in that island there's a pool that
- 7:17overlooks a Cove. And just allow your imagination
- 7:23to take you on the side of that pool.
- 7:28Maybe you can imagine a lounger, the sunshine perhaps sounds,
- 7:36maybe the pool, maybe the waves, maybe the breeze on your skin.
- 7:47And as you connect to that place, I want you to feel, feel
- 7:55connected to a truth that you can enjoy yourself, you can
- 8:01relax, you can feel at peace, you can unwind and not need any
- 8:10alcohol to do so. This moment is irrefutable
- 8:18evidence that there was a time that you used to think that you
- 8:25needed alcohol to relax. And yet here, in this moment,
- 8:34you simply know that it was never true.
- 8:39It was never true then, and it isn't true now.
- 8:44So breathe in and breathe out there on that lounger.
- 8:49Feel connected to that feeling of peace, relaxation,
- 8:54tranquility. Very soon I will count down from
- 8:595:00 to 1:00. I don't want you to imagine
- 9:03drifting off into a dreamlike sleep because you can do
- 9:08anything in your dreams. You can go back to the past and
- 9:13think of the future that's in five Eyelids getting heavier and
- 9:20heavier, jaw loosening, 4. Any tension around your neck or
- 9:26your shoulders just melting away.
- 9:30Three, arms feeling limp, loose and heavy.
- 9:36And then two, all of your internal organs all the way down
- 9:40to your gut releasing, relaxing now and then.
- 9:46One, just feel your legs limp, loose and heavy, so your arms
- 9:50and legs feel like the limbs of a puppet with no strings.
- 9:56And connect with that feeling as you drift deeper and deeper
- 10:05inwards to that place where new ideas form new beliefs and new
- 10:14beliefs create new boundaries, new standards, new ways of
- 10:19living. That's it.
- 10:28I want you to get a sense as you step inside to a place.
- 10:38A place that seems like your own private cinema.
- 10:44But this is a three-dimensional cinema.
- 10:47Instead of seeing a 2 dimensional screen, see a
- 10:49hologram. And I want you to see a hologram
- 10:55of your life when you already had a boundary that made sense
- 11:03when it came to drinking. A time in your life when you
- 11:07didn't drink on a Monday through to Thursday.
- 11:15I wonder if you could observe that version of you.
- 11:23Work still finished, You still found a way to relax, unwind,
- 11:30destress, and yet you didn't need a beer or a glass of wine
- 11:35to do it. So imagine being comfy in that
- 11:41soft seat in the cinema, seeing that three-dimensional movie of
- 11:46your past. Just extract all of the wisdom
- 11:54evidence that you don't need alcohol to relax when you finish
- 12:00working. There was a time you told
- 12:05yourself that I needed to relax, I needed to unwind.
- 12:11I've had a stressful day. But as you look at this memory,
- 12:17that was also true. Then you had stressful days,
- 12:23difficult times, and yet by not drinking alcohol during the
- 12:29week, you were able to keep yourself sharp, focused, you
- 12:39were sleeping better, and you were able to get more done more
- 12:46efficiently. Like your brain was operating at
- 12:52a higher processor speed. You were able to activate more
- 12:57resources, and I want you to contrast that time in your life
- 13:05with now as you reveal a hologram of your recent past.
- 13:14These times where you felt you needed a glass of wine, that
- 13:20beer to help you unwind. And you felt like that was true,
- 13:28that it was helping you with the stress.
- 13:32But by lowering and limiting your cognitive processing power,
- 13:41all you were doing is creating more stress and requiring more
- 13:48effort for the very next day. I want you to imagine there you
- 13:59are in a forest with a saw, and I want you to imagine that saw
- 14:10is sharp. And as you imagine cutting the
- 14:15tree without sharp saw, feel that whatever effort you invest
- 14:23leads directly to progress and results.
- 14:29But just imagine, next to that tree there's a bottle of wine.
- 14:36Imagine pouring that glass, drinking it, and as you look at
- 14:42the blade of the saw, see it becoming dull and blunted.
- 14:51And now when you try and continue soaring the tree, it
- 14:56requires even more effort to make even less progress.
- 15:03And you might be stressed at all of that work that you're doing
- 15:07to chop down this tree. So you pour yourself another
- 15:11glass of wine and then look at the teeth of that saw getting
- 15:19blunter. Someone could chop down a tree
- 15:26with an axe, but not with a spoon.
- 15:31The less sharp you become, the more effort is required.
- 15:37And if your unconscious understands that alcohol hasn't
- 15:42been helping, it's been hindering, It's been the very
- 15:50impediment to make things worse, let me know by nodding your head
- 16:00to extract all of the wisdom from the past and imagine a
- 16:06hologram now in that same cinema where you see yourself with a
- 16:12new relationship with alcohol, a boundary.
- 16:19You already have boundaries. Drink in the morning.
- 16:27You don't drink while you're working.
- 16:29I want you to imagine this hologram of your future is just
- 16:37expanding boundaries that are already there.
- 16:43Imagine that future version of you where your unconscious
- 16:48boundary is that you don't drink during the week unless it's a
- 16:57holiday, a flight, or a very special occasion.
- 17:02You don't do it not because you can't, but because that future
- 17:08version of you is choosing not to.
- 17:13Not by using willpower and discipline, but by using
- 17:18discernment. That future version of you just
- 17:24doesn't want it. And if you could imagine that
- 17:29future, returning home from work, maybe after a run or a
- 17:36cycle ride, seeing yourself preparing a meal, but seeing
- 17:43yourself perhaps pouring a glass of water with a slice of lemon
- 17:50instead of that Chardonnay or that glass of beer.
- 17:56I want you to see the version of you that is keeping yourself
- 18:01sharp and focused and yet still enjoying your evening.
- 18:08In fact, that version of you ends up having a better quality
- 18:13of life because that version of you gets to make new plans
- 18:22really intentionally enjoy your evenings, rather than falling
- 18:28into the habit of sinking in front of the TV and watching
- 18:34whatever's there or doom scrolling on your phone.
- 18:40A version of you that is replaced wine with refreshing
- 18:45water can drink. They're just choosing not to.
- 18:53And if you can see that version of you with the perfect boundary
- 19:00during the week that even if there is alcohol there in the
- 19:07fridge or in the apartment, you just don't want it.
- 19:14In fact, that version of you starts to believe that every
- 19:19time you turn it down, you are voting on what version of you
- 19:26you want to be sharp and focused or sluggish and blunt.
- 19:38You vote with your choices. And once you've seen which
- 19:44version of you you'd prefer, let me know by nodding your head.
- 19:50Step into that hologram. Feel how it would feel perhaps
- 19:56tomorrow or an upcoming day, bearing that meal and enjoying
- 20:04pouring yourself a refreshing glass of water, slice of lemon
- 20:10or lime. Feeling hydrated, refreshed,
- 20:15feeling proud. Feeling aligned, feeling sharp
- 20:21and yet still completely relaxed, drift back to that
- 20:30chair in the cinema, observing this future hologram.
- 20:35And then imagine seeing yourself on a weekend.
- 20:40Maybe a Friday night, a Saturday night, even a Sunday lunchtime.
- 20:47See yourself drinking in moderation, but only if it's
- 20:52outside of the house or inside the house, but only if you have
- 20:57guests, only if it's a special occasion.
- 21:01And I want you to get a sense, get the sense that this keeps
- 21:11that small part of alcohol that gives you the right level of
- 21:19enjoyment, but without blunting your edge.
- 21:29There's no downside, in fact, if your last drink is at lunchtime
- 21:35on a Sunday, just in the same way that you wouldn't drink
- 21:40caffeine late at night. Imagine not drinking alcohol the
- 21:46night before you have work the following day.
- 21:53If your unconscious feel that. This is a wonderful compromise,
- 21:59A boundary that reduces mindless drinking and enables you to
- 22:08enhance intentional social drinking.
- 22:13Let me know about nodding your head, drift into the hologram
- 22:19and then imagine being tested some Friday night, Saturday
- 22:25night, and maybe, maybe it's your partner, maybe it's your
- 22:30own in the dialogue that says why not, it's the weekend.
- 22:36I don't want you to feel how you would handle that, to respect
- 22:40your own boundary, because a boundary isn't where you set it,
- 22:47a boundary is where you enforce it.
- 22:51I want you to get a sand, then the boundary is what you do, not
- 22:58what you say. And if you feel that you can
- 23:03manoeuvre and establish that boundary where you only drink on
- 23:11a weekend in your own home, if you have guests or it's an
- 23:16occasion and that feels like a boundary that you can stick to,
- 23:24let me know by nodding your head.
- 23:30And then imagine you're out and about, maybe a restaurant, a bar
- 23:34somewhere else, dinner party. And if it's Friday or a Saturday
- 23:40evening, I want you to feel that you have the option, but without
- 23:46the obligation. And every now and then, imagine
- 23:51still having that glass of water, even on a Friday or a
- 23:55Saturday, just to prove to yourself that you are the one in
- 24:01control. You decide when you drink, what
- 24:06you drink. And how much you drink.
- 24:09And when it's intentional, it becomes more enjoyable.
- 24:15But if it becomes habitual, your unconscious will give you an
- 24:22emotional clue, like regret or shame or tiredness or fatigue.
- 24:31And your job is to pay attention to how you feel.
- 24:36Make us a nice glass of wine on a Friday or Saturday evening,
- 24:40shared with others. We'll also give you clues.
- 24:46You will enjoy the moment and feel no regret the following
- 24:49day. When you are aligned with your
- 24:53values, your boundaries, with your standards, there is no
- 25:00emotional penalty. But if you do feel that regret,
- 25:05that shame, that guilt, it doesn't mean you failed.
- 25:12It's just feedback, like a line of code which creates a bug.
- 25:19You don't wipe everything, you just amend that line of code.
- 25:26You tweak it, refine it, and then it all works fine.
- 25:33If your unconscious agrees, let me know by nodding your head.
- 25:39I don't need to imagine one final hologram.
- 25:45There in that cinema. Imagine on the left is you if
- 25:52you continue on the path that you're on.
- 25:56Blunt, sluggish if it means you've got to work harder, carry
- 26:01more stress. But imagine that happening over
- 26:04five years and then imagine that version of you with that ideal
- 26:11relationship with alcohol five years from now.
- 26:15Sharp on the ball, sleeping well, healthy, vibrant.
- 26:22Because when you make one positive change, rarely does it
- 26:27stop there. You've had the experience of
- 26:32maybe decorating one room of the house, and when that room looks
- 26:38great, you feel inspired, not obligated to improve the other
- 26:43rooms. And once this new relationship
- 26:48with alcohol becomes the new habit, don't be surprised if
- 26:54you're inspired to make refinements to other areas of
- 27:00your life too. Not because you have to, but
- 27:05because you choose to. And then contrast two different
- 27:10versions of you 5 years from now, The blunt, tired, stressed
- 27:17version compared to the sharp, focused, intentional version,
- 27:25and allow your body to float into whichever version of you
- 27:31that you want to wake up tomorrow.
- 27:33And when you've done that, let me know by nodding your head.
- 27:43And this is your identity now. You will act like someone that
- 27:53is kind of bored with alcohol. Kind of feels like that's what
- 27:59you did in your late teens and 20s.
- 28:04But if you never did that in your teens and 20s, would you
- 28:09really start now? If the answer's no, then it
- 28:15means all alcohol is just a choice, take it or leave it.
- 28:27But when you decide to take it only on your terms, on a Friday,
- 28:33Saturday night, on a special occasion, or on a weekday
- 28:40evening while you're on vacation, that's not because you
- 28:45have to. It's because you're choosing to.
- 28:49And if at any point in the future that loses its appeal,
- 28:54you reserve the right to expand your boundaries even more.
- 29:02Allow your unconscious to consider only drinking only on
- 29:07special occasions, and maybe that becomes a more desirable
- 29:11place to get to. But that's something for your
- 29:15unconscious to consider. For now, consider the new
- 29:21boundary of choosing not to drink on a weekday.
- 29:26It feels inspiring, feels like a challenge.
- 29:31It feels like something all parts can get behind because
- 29:37there's no downside. You keep the drinking that gives
- 29:42you pleasure or joy and just end that mindless drinking that was
- 29:49just habit anyway, before parts of your unconscious degree let
- 29:56me know by nodding your head. Now it's time to float back.
- 30:03Find yourself no longer in the cinema, but there on that
- 30:05lounger by the pool, looking over a Cove.
- 30:09And then imagine floating all the way back to your present,
- 30:13but taking all of these new ideas, boundaries, standards and
- 30:16changes with you. And when you wake up tomorrow,
- 30:22it's this version of you that will awaken.
- 30:25And when you return from work on a weekday, you will have no
- 30:33desire to drink because you don't need it, don't want it,
- 30:39and feel better when you don't have it.
- 30:42So take a deep breath in through your nose and out through your
- 30:47nose. Wiggle your fingers, wiggle your
- 30:50toes, connect and calibrate into the here and the now as I now
- 30:55count from 1:00 to 10:00 to awaken you.
- 31:00Starting to count on 2/3 waking up 456 more alert 7-8.
- 31:07Open your eyes, open your eyes, 910.
- 31:10Wide awake, wide awake, wide awake.
